Welcome to spring at Park Avenue Synagogue. As the cold dissipates and New York begins to thaw, we look forward to celebrating holidays in the sanctuary, learning together in our classrooms, volunteering in the community, and getting to know each other better over challah and cookies.
Ahead of the spring holidays, prepare for Passover by bringing non-perishable foods to our Hametz Cleanout Drive in March, and join us for services in April. Assemble care packages for Holocaust survivors on March 19 before marking Yom HaShoah at our commemoration program on April 13.
As you prepare for the warmer months ahead, sign your child up for Camp Keshet's summer programming or register to participate in our trips to Poland, Israel, and more.

To commemorate being spared by God from the 10th plague, it is traditional for the adult firstborn of every family to fast on the day before Passover from sunrise to sunset. But because this is a custom rather than a commandment, one can get an exemption from fasting by attending a siyum, an educational event celebrating Torah study at which food is served.

Jews are commanded to remove all hametz from their homes during Passover. It is traditional to eat dairy products like cheesecake, blintzes, and bourekas on Shavuot, the holiday celebrating receiving the Torah on Mount Sinai. The Hebrew word for milk, halav, has a numerical value of 40 – the same number of days that Moses spent on Mount Sinai.

This program is an opportunity for high school students to explore their professional interests and curiosities. Students meet with professionals in our community, learn about their work, and engage with Jewish perspectives. From the arts and accounting to medicine, law, and business, our students get to try topics on for size before going to college – and learn a little bit of Jewish thought, too.

Our newest program, led by shaliah Daniel Ohayon, is designed to connect teens to Israel through different topics, including food, culture, politics, daily life, and the IDF. Through engaging sessions with guest speakers and hands-on workshops, students will try delicious food and make decisions from the points of view of Israeli politicians and IDF soldiers – and experience Israel like never before.

We draw on Jewish wisdom and socialemotional learning to explore conversations and topics connected to parenting adolescents. Rabbi Zuckerman brings his rabbinic wisdom and experience parenting teens, and Ariel Glueck brings her social work experience and expertise as a Jewish educator working with youth. TEEN/PARENT RIDE FOR THE LIVING: POLAND AND ISRAEL TRIPS

Join us for our first-ever Teen/Parent Ride For The Living trip. Ride For The Living is a fourday experience in Krakow that includes a visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau and a 60-mile bike ride from Auschwitz-Birkenau to JCC Krakow (there are also shorter rides and walking options). In addition to the ride, we are offering an Israel trip.
Families are welcome to come to Poland, Israel, or both.

Participants will rotate through engaging stations featuring Israeli dancing, food tasting, creative art projects, and letter writing to IDF soldiers. Julie Schwartz, Adult Engagement program manager: “I volunteered for Tomchei Shabbos – an organization that puts together boxes of food for Shabbat for families in need. I also donated money to JNF in honor of family members.”
Claire Davidson Bruder, rabbinic intern: “I taught dance at an afterschool program for underprivileged kids, and I loved it so much I ended up continuing to volunteer there until I graduated high school.”
Ariel Glueck, director of Teen and Youth Programming: “I interviewed a Holocaust survivor and created a video ‘documentary’ based on the interview.”
