Teeing Off One Sweet Weekend at PGA National Resort & Spa More than 1,000 people turned out to help build a 1,250-foot sundae at PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens August 18, 2013. The sundae, which set the new Guinness Book World Record for the Longest Ice Cream Sundae, was laid out in connected troughs that snaked through two ballrooms and spanned across the entire length of the resort’s 40,000 sq foot indoor meetings and conference center. The Ice Cream Festival was an entire weekend; jam packed with fun activities for the entire family, all with an ice cream theme. The cherry on this sundae was “Luke’s Sweet Sundae, Fun Day” where over 257 families and over 100 volunteers from Alliance for Kids and Home Depot, built a 1249.9 ft long sundae. The sundae consisted of over 1850 lbs of Luke’s Ice Cream, 1696 lbs of chocolate sauce, 462 lbs of sprinkles, 840 lbs of whipped cream and 1748 lbs of bananas. The toppings were generously donated by Sysco. A portion of the proceeds were donated to Alliance for Kids. Other highlights of the sweet festivities included; A Gourmet Pairing Ice Cream Dinner, a four course culinary feast presented by celebrated Executive Chef Donald Young and celebrity guest chefs Resort guests could not get enough of the Face Freeze Frenzy ice cream eating contest where winning celebrity contestant, Michael Lohan, (Lindsey Lohan’s dad) won a year supply of ice cream for charity by inhaling over 2lbs of chocolate ice cream with no hands, in just five minutes. Other local celebrities competing in this ice cream eating contest included CBS 12’s Morning Show Host, Suzanne Boyd, the Mayor of Palm Beach Gardens, Burt Premuroso and WFLX Hot Ticket TV Host, Rachel Leigh, amongst others. The Whole Foods Market Big Taste Ice Cream Social was a chance for guests to enjoy all natural, gourmet ice cream with a multitude of gourmet toppings to their hear t’s content. Then later that evening a Sock Hop Dinner Dance and Golf Kart Drive In Movie topped off the evening. The Ice Cream Festival was one sweet weekend to remember and an absolute blast for the entire family. is Toughest 2013 PGA Tour Venue (non-Major Series) PGA National Resort’s acclaimed Champion course, with it’s demanding Bear Trap provided the toughest tournament test of golf during the 2013 PGA TOUR season (non-major venues)* Originally designed by George and Tom Fazio, and redesigned by Jack Nicklaus, the mighty Champion played to an average of 1.318 over par during the first stop of this year’s “Florida Swing.” As published on Golf Digest.com, only five other regular TOUR stops had average scores over par. In addition to the popular Honda Classic, its storied history includes hosting the 1983 Ryder Cup, 1987 PGA Championship and nearly two decades of the Senior PGA Championship. Most notably, The Champion is home to the legendary “Bear Trap” (No. 15-17) which continues to live up to its reputation as one of the most challenging, three-hole stretches in the game. World No. 1 Tiger Woods – who lives in the area — says of the Bear Trap, “There are no bailouts. You have to commit and hit good shots.” “There’s a pretty good reason they call it the Bear Trap because if it doesn’t get you one way, it’s going to get you another,” says Rory Sabbatini, winner of the 2011 Honda Classic. When asked about the Bear Trap Jack Nicklaus says, “It’s not about length, it’s about precision. It’s about guts. It’s all about what do you have in your chest that you can finish those holes.” Just as The Champion challenges the best players in the game each year during the Honda Classic, visitors of our world-class resort are encouraged to have a go at the famous Bear Trap and one of the great 18s on the PGA TOUR. Will you tackle the Bear Trap? *As published by Golfdigest.com

The most storied of all the courses at PGA National, The Champion was the site of the the 1983 Ryder Cup, the 1987 PGA Championship, as well as the permanent home for the PGA Seniors' Championship from 1982-2000. The course underwent a $4 million redesign by Jack Nicklaus and the Nicklaus Design Team in 1990 followed by a renovation in 2002. From those changes the infamous "Bear Trap" was born with one of the toughest three hole stretches in golf. The Honda Classic, one of the premier stops on the PGA TOUR, is currently played here each spring. The Champion provides players with the finest playing surfaces available anywhere, and it leads PGA National’s line-up of award-winning courses.

PGA National Resort is proud to present the new Fazio course. The Fazio is a reinvention of The Haig, PGA National Resort & Spa's original 18-hole course that opened in 1980. While the original par-72 routing remains intact, the renovation improves the classic golf architecture with modern advances, including: A 70% increase in total green surface to 2.5 acres, grassed with TifEagle on the greens and Celebration Bermuda grass on tees and fairways Reconfigured tee boxes and bunkers Player-friendly tees allowing the course to be played at 5,100 yards in accordance with the popular “Tee it Forward initiative sponsored by the PGA and USGA

Named after the immortal Gene Sarazen, the first golfer ever to win the professional Grand Slam, "the thinking man's course" is the ultimate test of accuracy and precision. Designed by Tom Fazio, the Squire is the shortest and the most exacting of the courses at PGA National Resort & Spa. Accuracy with fairway woods and long irons is tested on many tees and the new smaller "emerald bermuda" greens demand precise approach shots. Several doglegs provide a risk reward opportunity for any longer hitter as well. The Squire is surrounded by natural environmental areas and teeming with native vegetation, which attracts an abundance of wildlife. The 5th hole even runs along part of the wilderness preserve, which borders the west side of the PGA National community.

Named after its designer, Arnold Palmer, this course is one of the more forgiving at PGA National from tee to fairway and known as a risk reward course. The open fairways and larger Champion Bermuda greens can be quite accommodating and invite players to take a chance if they dare as golfers are not overly penalized for missing the fairway or primary rough on most holes. There is a considerable amount of undulation through the fairway presenting the opportunity for uneven lies and creative shotmaking, and even a nod to its Scottish roots with a links style routing, and holes 8 and 12 sharing a common green. The Palmer has a great series of finishing holes, with the 18th being one of the most scenic and picturesque par 5s on the property.

Designed by Karl Litten,The Estates course has an enjoyable mix of challenging and docile holes. The course sets up for any level of player as it is one of the shorter courses at PGA National Resort & Spa. Where golfers are tested is in the formidable placement of fairway bunkers and water hazards. Generous fairways at this course will often make stray tee shots more manageable and the large, inviting greens help keep the course fun for the high handicapper. Forced carries to many of the greens over either hazards or bunkers create a test that makes each round more enjoyable than the last and with a very open feeling created by the property-wide housing set backs, the course seems almost like a core golf course. The Estates course is located 5 miles west of the main resort.

Rory McIlroy, 2012 Champion The Honda Classic

A Divot To Remember The Ryder Cup Matches Oct. 14-16, 1983 PGA National Golf Club (Champion Course) Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The 25th Ryder Cup Matches were anything but a repeat of past domination by the United States stable of talent. In fact, this edition staged at PGA National Golf Club’s Champion Course served as the transition to a new era of compelling drama in the sport. With both sides in an 8-8 deadlock following two days of competition, the remaining 12 singles matches were intense and featured some of the event’s most memorable shotmaking. Spain’s Seve Ballesteros secured a halve with Fuzzy Zoeller when he struck a 240-yard 3-wood from a bunker on the 18th hole. The ball landed on the fringe of the green from where he

chipped and saved par. Those who witnessed the shot have deemed it one of the greatest recovery performances in golf. Later, American Lanny Wadkins fell three down with seven to play against Spain’s Jose Maria Canizares. Wadkins trimmed the margin to one heading into the 18th hole, a par-5 dogleg left into the wind. Wadkins was encouraged when Canizares’ approach came up short of the green. Wadkins then hit a 60-yard pitching wedge approach to within a foot of the hole for a tap-in birdie to halve the match. So overcome with joy was U.S. Captain Jack Nicklaus that he marched to the spot where Wadkins hit his shot and bent down and kissed the ground. The U.S. then watched as Tom Watson bogeyed the 17th hole but closed out Bernard Gallacher, who missed a 41/2-foot bogey putt, in a 2 and 1 decision. Said European Captain Tony Jacklin, “I’m disappointed, but it could not have been any closer. Our boys put up a fantastic performance. I think the game of golf will benefit.”

Gary Player, one of only four players to win golf ’s modern Grand Slam, earned his second Senior PGA Championship and fourth major title in senior golf. 1989 - A Bigger Plum For Mowry PGA National Golf Club Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Larry Mowry of Atlanta, Ga., who was a “king” on the mini-tour circuit with 106 victories, snared one of senior golf ’s biggest prizes by winning the 50th Senior PGA Championship. The 52-year-old Mowry turned in a third-round 65, the lowest round of the tournament, and then struggled home with a 73 to hold off 1981 Senior PGA Champion Miller Barber and Al Geiberger by one stroke.

PGA National Golf Club Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Lee Trevino won his first Senor PGA Championship in dramatic fashion, making par-saving putts on the final two holes to finish at 10-under-par 278 and holding off Mike Hill by one stroke. Hill’s final-round 69 was the lowest round of the day. Trevino, 52, earned his 38th career victory and became the 10th player to have won the PGA Championship (1974, ‘84) and the PGA Seniors’ Championship.

1993 - A Championship To Cherish PGA National Golf Club Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Tom Wargo of Centralia, Ill., became the first PGA club professional since 1979 to win one of senior golf ’s major championships, and accomplished the feat in a memorable extra-hole duel. Wargo, who hadn’t taken up golf until age 25, was tied by Bruce Crampton after 72 holes at 13under-par 275. Wargo defeated Crampton in a two-hole playoff, highlighted by a spectacular save for par from a greenside bunker on the 16th hole at PGA National’s Champion Course. Crampton followed by sending his tee shot on the par-3 17th hole into the water. Wargo’s tee shot found the middle of the green from where he twoputted for victory. “This one is for all the club professionals and the fans,” said Wargo, hoisting the Alfred S. Bourne Trophy.

PGA National Golf Club Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Raymond Floyd, once revered as one of the game’s all-time top front-runners, squandered a four-stroke lead on the final nine holes at PGA National Golf Club’s Champion Course. Playing partner Lee Trevino cashed in on Floyd’s misadventure into the closing four-hole stretch nicknamed “The Bear Trap.” Floyd knocked two balls into the water and posted a quadruple bogey on the 164-yard 15th hole. Then, Floyd capped his frustrations by hitting a 7-iron into the pond and came out with a double bogey on the par-3 17th. Trevino walked away with his second Senior PGA Championship in three years.Trevino made an in-

significant bogey on the 72nd hole to finish with a 2-under-par 70 and a 9-under-par 279. He was a stroke better than Jim Colbert and two strokes ahead of Floyd (75) and Dave Stockton (72).

1996 - Hale Foils The ‘Bear Trap’ PGA National Golf Club Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Two weeks after he let a three-stroke lead evaporate in the desert in losing the Tradition, Hale Irwin found sweet redemption among the swaying palms at PGA National Golf Club by winning the 57th Senior PGA Championship. A three-time U.S. Open champion, Irwin withstood a shaky 74 in the second round, built his lead to four strokes heading into the “Bear Trap” final stretch of holes at the Champion Course and deflected the challenges of Japan’s Isao Aoki and Argentinean Vicente Fernandez. Perhaps Irwin’s defining moment of the Championship was a tee shot on the treacherous par-3 15th hole. His ball landed 35 feet from the flagstick but was dry. He cruised home for a 71, with meaningless bogeys on the final two holes not spoiling his first major championship as a senior player. Irwin’s 72-hole total of 8under-par 280 was two strokes better than Aoki, who notched his fourth top-5 finish with a 71-282. Fernandez, competing on a special invitation, finished 73-284.

and generally “was just pushing the envelope. I was just trying to do things that maybe I shouldn’t be trying.” Irwin arrived at PGA National Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., a year later on a mission. Winning wasn’t the only thought he had. He had designs on a greater year. Irwin posted a methodical 4-under-par 68 on his way to a 12-stroke victory and a second consecutive title in the 58th Senior PGA Championship presented by Advil. It was the largest victory margin for any Champions Tour professional and the second-highest margin in Senior PGA Championship history. Sam Snead won by 15 strokes in 1973, just three miles down the road at now-BallenIsles Country Club. The 51year-old Irwin became the first back-to-back winner in Championship history since Snead in 1972 and 1973, and the fifth player to win consecutive

Senior PGA Championship titles. Irwin is the 12th multiple champion in event history. His 14-underpar 274 total was his third victory of the year, a season in which he would go on to tie the Senior PGA Tour record with nine victories, become golf’s first $2 million season money-winner and be named Senior PGA Tour Player of the Year.

1998 - Another Hale Storm PGA National Golf Club Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. As if he had something to prove to his peers, Hale Irwin captured a third consecutive Senior PGA Championship by a seven-stroke margin at wind-blown PGA National Golf Club. Irwin became the first player since 1956 – when Peter Thomson won a third straight British Open – to win three consecutive major championships on any tour. Larry Nelson finished runner-up and Gil Morgan was eight strokes back after each had closing 72s. Irwin’s preparation was one reason he handled the changing wind conditions. He arrived six days early to PGA National’s Champion Course to practice. Said Nelson, "Hale just played great. He did what he had to do and didn’t leave any room for anybody to catch him."

Allen Doyle, who played college hockey in Vermont and didn’t declare himself a professional golfer until 1995, finished with a final-round record 8-underpar 64 to win the 60th Senior PGA Championship. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Doyle became the 18th player to win the Senior PGA Championship in his first attempt. He overpowered the Champion Course in the final round, a performance that included an eagle chip-in on the par-5 10th hole and a 186-yard 3-iron approach to the 16th that left him with a one-foot birdie putt. Doyle’s 14-under-par 274 total, two strokes better than Argentinian Vicente Fernandez. Doyle’s golf swing closely resembles that of a hockey player and the Champion was reminded of that. “I should have brought a hockey helmet and put it on coming down the 18th hole,” he said.“Then, I’d really be known for something.” But Doyle left his mark, helmet or not. He finished his first year as a senior professional with four victories.

Overcoming a 3 stroke deficit and a hard fought battle with The Bear Trap, Els' 3-under edged out 2006 champion Luke Donald by one shot and just two ahead of Nathan Green.

2009 Honda Classic Y.E. Yang stayed alone in the lead the whole way during the final round shooting a 2-under 68 to finish one shot ahead of John Rollins to pick up his first PGA TOUR victory. Rory McIlroy held strong to a final round lead, managing clutch pars down the stretch to secure a two-shot victory over Tiger Woods and Tom Gillis. With the win, Rory McIlroy ascended to #1 in the Official World Golf Rankings, the 2nd youngest player ever to reach the position. Playing The Honda Classic for the first time as a pro, Woods started the fourth round nine strokes back of McIlroy before electrifying tournament

2013 Honda Classic Michael Thompson won his first PGA TOUR event by closing with a one-under 69, one of only five sub-70 rounds recorded Sunday on PGA National's Champions course, to seal a two-stroke victory over Geoff Ogilvy (69). Thompson seized control with a 50-foot eagle putt on the third hole and superb par saves early on the back nine. He then made birdie from the bunker on the last hole to secure the victory. His previous best finish was a tie for second at the 2012 U.S. Open. Ogilvy birdied two of his last three holes including a chipin from off the 16th green for a 69 to finish alone in second.
