Medical and Wellness Committee! Mission Statement The Health & Wellness Committee strives to develop programs to encourage health and wellness awareness in the community of Wellington. Our Health and Wellness committee members plan, execute and host the Chamber’s Bi-annual Health and Wellness festivals; mentor students entering health related educational programs in Wellington and work on numerous heath care projects and special events. We support and strive to enhance the Medical Arts District. A component to each monthly meeting is a “Meet Your Professional” where local physicians and healthcare related companies visit and allow members to meet them, ask questions, and learn about their practice(s). Choosing a Doctor: Quick tips
When you choose a doctor for yourself or a loved one, make sure to choose a primary care doctor you can trust. A primary care doctor can: Help you make important decisions, like which screening tests and shots to get Treat many health problems Refer you to a specialist when you need more help with a specific health issue When you are choosing a doctor, look for someone who: Treats you with respect Listens to your opinions and concerns Encourages you to ask questions Explains things in ways you can understand When you and your doctor work together as a team, you’ll get better health care. Try the following tips to find a doctor who’s right for you. Ask for recommendations from people you know. Getting a reference from someone you know and trust is a great way to find a doctor. Ask friends, family members, neighbors, or coworkers if they have a doctor they like. If you are looking for a new doctor because yours is retiring or moving, ask your current doctor for a recommendation.
Check with your insurance company
If you have health insurance, you may need to choose a doctor in their network. Some plans may let you choose a doctor outside the network if you pay a bigger share of your health care costs. Call your insurance company and ask for a list of local doctors who take your insurance plan. See if your insurance company has a Web site you can use to search for a local doctor who accepts your plan.
If you don’t have health insurance, you’ll have to pay for health care out of pocket, which can be very expensive. For help finding insurance, visit https://www.healthcare.gov/.
Call your top choices.
Make a list of the doctors you have in mind. Call their offices to ask questions and learn more about them. The answers to the following questions may help you make a decision: Is the doctor taking new patients? How long will it take to get an appointment? How long do appointments usually last? Is the doctor part of a group practice? Who are the other doctors? Who will see you if the doctor isn’t available? Which hospital does the doctor use? Can you get lab work and x-rays done in the office? What is the office’s cancellation policy? If you have a medical condition, does the doctor have experience treating it? If you are more comfortable speaking to a doctor in a language besides English, is there a doctor or nurse who speaks that language? Does the doctor offer evening or weekend appointments? Ask yourself these questions after the first appointment.

Take Control
of Your Medical Records
Your medical records are yours, and you have the right to see them. If you are ready to take control of your medical records, here are some tips that can help you: Keep your own records: Make notes of your health care visits, and what was said. You can also make notes of your prescriptions. Keep your own records, and you will know what is happening. Get a full copy: Before you leave any appointment, ask for a copy. From blood tests to dental records, there is no reason why you cannot have a copy of your records. Be organized: Organize your records so that you know where they are. Have a system in place that allows you to find them quickly. Keep your records safe: Make sure your records are in a safe place. You want essential records safe from damage and from theft. Know your rights: You own the infor-mation in the medical records — even though the
health care professional owns the actual document. Realize that you have control over the information. Have mistakes corrected: By law, you can have misleading or incorrect information corrected. If there is a mistake in your medical records, you need to have it fixed. Be on the alert for identity fraud: If you discover that your identity has been stolen, make sure you check for unauthorized medical procedures in your name. Make sure records are updated: Try to make sure that copies of your records are updated with new information. Consider records for legibility: Charts can often be illegible. If something in your medical records appears sloppy or difficult to read, ask to have it clarified. Consider setting up an online profile: There are services like Google Health that can provide you with a way to manage your health records electronically.

School Immunizations
Requirements
Florida Certificate of Immunization, Form DH 680, is the only document that the schools are permitted to accept as proof of immunization. Shots may be obtained through your local physician or Palm Beach County Health Department Health Centers or Palm Beach Health Department Immunization Van located throughout the county.
Required
By the time a child starts school he/she should have already had a number of required immunizations. However, proof of updates, boosters, and series completion is required to enter Palm Beach County Schools for the first time and to advance to some grade levels. A physical is required for entrance to Pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and those entering 7th grade. Proof of the following is Required for New Students, Transfer Students And Entry To Some Grade Levels. Diphtheria/Tetanus/Pertussis (DTaP) 5 doses (4 if last dose given after 4th Birthday) (REQUIRED GRADES PRE- K -12) Polio Series 4 or 5 doses (last dose must be given on or after the 4th birthday and before kindergarten) (REQUIRED GRADES PRE- K -12) Measles/Mumps/Rubella (MMR) 2 doses MMR, (Mumps, Measles, Rubella) (first dose on or after 1st birthday, and the second dose after age 4. May also be given as 2 doses of MMRV (MMR and Varicella combined) (REQUIRED GRADES PRE-K -12) Hepatitis B (Hep B) 3 doses (REQUIRED FOR GRADES PRE-K-12) Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis Booster (Tdap) 1 dose Tdap

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTS
All Pre-K, Kindergarten and new students seeking entrance into a public school in Palm Beach County are required by Florida Statute §1003.22 and School Board Policy 5.06 to present, at the time of entry, a health examination documented on State of Florida School Health Entry Exam DH 3040 performed within one (1) year prior to enrollment. All Palm Beach County students - School Health Entry Exam on form **DH 3040 required for Pre-K, Kindergarten and Grade 7. Students who transfer within Palm Beach County and other counties within the State of Florida (including private schools) - Review of School Health Entry Exam on form DH 3040 (original or copy) for Pre-K, Kindergarten and Grade 7 documentation. Students who transfer from another state or country - School Health Entry Exam on form DH 3040 (original or copy) required for all grades. Physicals presented on forms from another state are acceptable if they include all components covered on DH Form 3040**. The Dos and Don’ts of Dietary Supplements By Remi Lederman Dietary supplements have a reputation of being exclusively for the elderly. This myth leads people to believe that they do not need take supplements if they aren’t senior citizens, but people of all ages can benefit from dietary supplements. Supplements can boost immune systems, act as an anti-aging aesthetic and delay or prevent conditions such as osteoporosis or heart disease. Supplements can even give you more energy by supplying your cells with the right nutrients. Get out your pillboxes people because it is time to start integrating supplements into your routine. But before you get started, you need to know how to take supplements safely. Here are some guidelines to follow when taking dietary supplements:
Dietary supplements are not a replacement for a healthy diet
For people who are vegan or lactose intolerant, calcium and other supplements can provide

the necessary amounts of vital nutrients. However, a variety of supplements will not replace a healthy diet. Food gives the body a combination of vitamins and minerals that work together to promote health. Supplements cannot replicate this relationship between the nutrients found in food. Supplements are only meant to fill in the gaps in your diet. It is important to maintain a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables even when taking dietary supplements.
Stick to the dosage
People think that since supplements are good for you, the more you take the better it is for your body. That idea is incorrect. Some supplements will have no greater effect if you take more than the recommended dose. In this case, taking more is a waste of money. Others have harmful effects. Keep in mind that “natural” or “organic” does not always mean “safe.” Always read the label to make sure you are only taking the recommended dose.

Be aware of the purpose and possible consequences of taking supplements
Never take supplements for no reason. Talk to your doctor about what supplements will make your diet well rounded before taking what you may think you need. Also be aware of the vitamin or mineral’s unintended effects. Calcium is a popular supplement taken to prevent osteoporosis. According to Harvard Medical School, recent research studies have found substantial evidence that calcium supplements increase the risk of heart disease. Although nothing is proven, people with heart problems would be wise to stay away from calcium supplements. It is important to know what the supplement is and what it does in order to safely consume it.
Be careful pairing supplements with medications
Some supplements can counteract medications, which can be dangerous for people with certain conditions. Vitamin K is known to interfere with blood thinners and calcium supplements are known to interfere with thyroid medication. Always ask a doctor before pairing a supplement with prescription medication.

Home Remedies By Remi Lederman Turning to your doctor for every scratch or headache can be tiring and expensive. Home remedies can be an unexpected fix to an ongoing condition. Some household products have alternate uses that are as surprising as their effectiveness. Here are some locally grown fixes to some common ailments.
Hiccups
Drinking water, holding your breath and even getting scared have been attributed as cures for hiccups. When those old tricks don’t work, try swallowing a teaspoon of dry sugar. Anxiety
When fighting off nerves, oranges are the secret weapon. Drinking orange juice with honey and nutmeg is known to slow heart rates. common complaint of Floridians. When feeling congested from allergies or the common cold, try adding honey and lemon to a cup of hot water or tea. The ingredients work together to soothe the throat and rid the airways of mucus. Beekeepers are abundant in Palm Beach County and offer a variety of different honeys that would be perfect for a congestion calming tea.
Sun Burns
Add sunburn soother to the long list of applications for milk. With so many uses, it’s no wonder that this all-purpose beverage is referred to as the fruit of life. The next time you get sunburned, try using a cold compress of milk and water. The fat and protein in the milk act as an anti-inflammatory while the cold temperature reduces swelling by causing blood vessels to constrict. Sea Lice Bites
Any Florida resident or past visitor can recognize the telltale signs of a sea lice attack. The agonizingly itchy red bumps can drive even the biggest beach bums away from the ocean. Don’t let those little sea creatures keep you away. The next time you get bitten by sea lice soak a sponge with a mixture of water and either vinegar or meat tenderizer. Buy Local Wellington BUY LOCAL WELLINGTON! In whatever community you live, this has long been the message from local business owners. I’m a bit biased, being the owner of My Community Pharmacy, but, like millions of Americans, I could have just as easily worked for Corporate America. My wife could have continued to work for CVS and we could have continued getting our medications filled at the huge conglomerate. Instead, we decided to take a risk and start a small pharmacy back in 2008. We went all-in with our family’s savings, got loans from the family that believed in our vision, and maxed out over $100K on our credit cards to start a locally owned independent pharmacy. That sounds crazy and very risky to some, but we aimed to serve the public and give them an option to the chains. With that said, I don’t understand why some people don’t support their local economy. Like many other business owners, about 75 cents of every dollar made is spent and recirculated here in our own community. On the other hand, CVS sends 75 cents of every dollar they make out of the state. Same is true for Wal-
greens. We (local business owners and employees) buy from our neighbors and support other local businesses which also keeps a greater percentage of our tax dollars here. Corporate profits usually get dispersed all over the world to share-holders and corporate management. Local business owners typically live in the communities in which they work and to some extent are active in their communities. We care about what is going on in our town. We sit on boards and foundations for charities in our community. Locally owned businesses also employ the citizens of the towns they serve, again, increasing spending in that very same community and tax revenue. Members of my staff, on average, make 20% more than they would at a CVS or a Walgreens. In addition, a big chain would not hesitate to close their doors in a neighborhood they don’t deem profitable whereas with independents we put the needs of our community first. I would never move my store to Palm Beach Island just to sell the same medication for three times the amount like the business model of the chains. Our goal is to bring back the essence of a GetWell

real pharmacy before the chains introduced the “fast-food” image of pharmacy. We don’t simply concentrate of prescription counts, albeit we are very efficient at filling medication for our patients,. We try to learn the history of each of our patients and counsel them on health and wellness. We offer natural alternatives sold over-the-counter that can be more beneficial than prescription drugs with terrible side effects. We take every insurance out there and never lost any of our contracts like Express Scripts as Walgreens did and sent patients into a panic. Many people assume our prescription prices are higher than the chains, but the insurance companies, not individual pharmacies, dictate how much you pay at the pharmacy. The pricing we do control on prescriptions is that of uninsured patients, referred to as cash patients. We save our cash patients hundreds of dollars a year with our aggressively low prices. We shop our competition and our prices have never been beaten! We do not have a corporate structure in Woonsocket, RI or Deerfield, IL that determines our cash price. We are nimble and can lower pricing when there is room to do so. For example we sell a 30 day supply of Plavix for $29.95, whereas, last checked, Walgreens was selling the same drug for $144 and CVS was selling it for $135! Some prefer the convenient hours and drivethru options of the chain drugstores. To make it more convenient for our patients, we are open 7 30

days a week and we offer Free Delivery of prescription medications from Miami to Vero Beach. Our motto is “If you can’t make it to us, then we’ll come to you.” We offer curbside service for pickup and drop off of prescriptions. It really surprises me to have very loyal customers and patients in Miami and Ft. Pierce that get their medication delivered from us monthly while we know people in Olympia that will go to Walgreens or CVS. It usually takes a bad service experience for them to switch over to us and once they do they never go back because they see the value we bring to the industry.
