Manhattan-based Plastic Surgeon Dr. Spero J. Theodorou Helps Kirby Smile Again Dr. Spero Theodorou assisted Dustin E. Kirby, an Iraq war veteran in choosing the right treatment for the damage done by a single bullet. Dr. Spero J. Theodorou, who runs Park Avenue Smart Lipo™, the only Smartlipo training facility in NYC, is specialized in diverse plastic surgery procedures. The surgeon recently helped Dustin Kirby, an Iraq war veteran get back to a pain-free life after nearly a decade of suffering and pain. Known commonly as Doc, Kirby was shot in the face on a Christmas Day in 2006, when he was 22. The bullet entered through his left cheek and exited his right. On its way out, it ripped out part of his tongue and seven teeth, and shattered the right side of his jaw. It also cracked part of his lower skull, near the roof of his mouth, and damaged his sinuses. Doc underwent over 30 operations in the ten years following the incident. The surgeons at the military hospital installed titanium plates to reinforce his hybrid mandible and give it shape. But Doc sensed that his government-funded facial reconstruction had crested and was failing. He also faced problems such as chronic pain, migraines, PTSD, and insomnia, which made the things worse. To manage pain and sleeplessness, and the loneliness, he even turned to drinking, When the condition became harder to manage, Doc considered the offer made by Dr. Theodorou, a year after the surgery. In 2007, just a year after the surgery, Dr. Theodorou and his brother met Doc during a benefit dinner honoring veterans at the Waldorf Astoria. They had assured Kirby that if he wanted care, they could help. After Doc’s mother contacted the person who conducted the event in 2007, Kirby got an email from the Manhattan plastic surgeon Dr. Spero J. Theodorou, confirming that a team of New York City surgeons with a program called Marine Assist will repair his badly-damaged mouth and jaw. Dr. Theodorou was instrumental in getting Doc connected with the right hospital and the right doctor Dr. David Hirsch, Director of Oral Oncology and Reconstruction, New York Head and Neck Institute at Lenox Hill Hospital. He is also part of the volunteer team with Marine Assist. The Marine Assist program will pay all of Kirby’s surgical costs. He and Lenox Hill Hospital offered Doc the operation.
