HOMI FASHION & JEWELS EXHIBITION HOMI Fashion&Jewels Exhibition is the only event in Italy completely dedicated to Fashion Accessories, Bijoux and Trendy Jewellery. In the capital of fashion, Milan, HOMI Fashion&Jewels Exhibition is a trendy event to present collections and accessories for the upcoming season twice a year, in February and September, with a special focus on ready-to-wear fashion.

PASHION meets up with Rachna Malkani, the Creative Director of Native Dubai, founded in 2007, to find out more about the brand which specializes in manufacturing luxury leather goods, including bags in camel leather in the United Arab Emirates.

Q: Are you planning to grow and encourage regional designers to use your expertise and quality production?

A: Yes we do, I’d like to use a quote I once read “Before you become a Leader success is about growing yourself, when you become a leader, success is about helping others grow”.

I’d like to believe we are those leaders of UAE’s Luxury leather industry. After having made our dreams into reality, we also want to keep rooting for others to do just the same.

Q: You faced many personal challenges. Do you believe that overcoming such difficulties is a vital stepping stone to grow and succeed in life and in business?

A: Indeed I do, the resilience that’s needed in today’s competitive, noisy world, doesn’t come from just being a good creative.

Living in a world of technology and social media, getting caught up in the game of instant gratification and validation, we have forgotten the art of perseverance, cultivation, nurturing, and patience before harvesting the fruits of our labor.

It takes much more than being talented in order to thrive on whatever Goal you set yourself up for in Life. Difficulties and setbacks are what make us learn the value and power of endurance, persistency and commitment to make it through.

My Life having been so unconventional and challenging, taught me the lessons that set me up for learning, to never settle for less than what I truly deserve. So yep I’d say welcome Life, what have you got now for me, because I’m always ready ;) Q: What was the biggest challenge you faced setting up your own brand “Native”?

A: The idea that a Brand being manufactured in UAE, would

not be able to hold much value in the eyes of consumers, as it didn’t carry the weight of traditional approach, being set as, the Best Luxury Leather is manufactured in Italy or France. Our challenge was not to give in to the typical approach and take chances with the believe and conviction, in what we had created and achieved against all odds.

Q: Your vision/mantra for Native includes defying “brandconsciousness”. How difficult is it to penetrate the luxury market in our region where consumers are driven by international luxury brands?

A: The idea of marketing strategies are ever evolving, keeping in mind the changing needs of the progressive thinking consumer.

Our approach was to drop the idea of assuming and take more of an experimental approach. If you don’t give someone a choice, you are assuming they are making a choice, when in reality they have been served the same platter, over and over again Truth starts unfolding when they have a choice, and that’s what exactly we saw, as Native became a brand for inspiring in regional women, setting a unique trend, in the way of expressing themselves, breaking away from the common and overseen style statements.

It’s not either or, we realized there is a room for established brands and unique style statement bags, in the same woman’s cupboard.

With changing time, as feminine power takes reins of defining her own individuality, Native fits right into that mindset and made its own space, in the hearts of these forward thinking, yet assumed, as traditional women.

Q: You use a variety of leathers including camel leather.

Do you see a potential growth in using camel leather and a possibility for export of camel leather for international brands?

A: Camel Leather is quite exclusive and definitely deserves more acknowledgement in the Leather fashion category.

However it hasn’t been able to take prime spot in our collections, due to certain challenges we face in supply and availability on a regular basis. But with what we have available, we continue to make the best of it, by having the range in our collections all the time, so the costumer always gets the choice to make that call.

For export of the leather I would leave it to the Tanneries, to make that as their project to take on, and decide if that’s what they are driven to achieve.

Q: What does it take to build and maintain your name in the market?

A: Self belief, talent, quality deliverables consistently, paying attention to your customer’s needs and likes. Never taking your consumer for granted and always listening to what they are saying. Above all always come from a place and intent of delivering with honesty and passion, to offer true lasting value through your products to your customers.

‫س‪ :‬ما هو التحدي األكبر الذي واجهته‬ ‫في إنشاء عالمتك التجارية الخاصة‬ ‫«‪»Native‬؟‬ ‫ج‪ :‬التحدي األكبر كان يكمن في‬ ‫فكرة أن العالمة التجارية التي يتم‬ ‫تصنيعها في اإلمارات العربية المتحدة‬ ‫لن تكون ذات قيمة كبيرة في عيون‬ ‫المستهلكين‪ ،‬وذلك ألنها ال تحمل ثقل النهج التقليدي‪،‬‬ ‫فالمتعارف عليه أن أفضل الجلود الفاخرة يتم تصنيعها‬ ‫في إيطاليا أو فرنسا‪ ،‬فكان التحدي الذي يواجهنا هو عدم‬ ‫االستسالم للنهج النمطي‪ ،‬واغتنام الفرص باإليمان والقناعة‪،‬‬ ‫فيما أسسناه‪ ،‬وحققناه‪ ،‬رغم كل الصعاب‪.‬‬

‫س‪ :‬رؤيتك حول مشاركة المشاهير‬ ‫لدعم عالمة تجارية؟‬ ‫ج‪ :‬أؤيدها فقط إذا كانت ذات صلة‬ ‫برسالة العالمة التجارية وهدفها‪،‬‬ ‫غرضا محدد بوضوح‪،‬‬ ‫إذا كان تخدم‬ ‫ً‬ ‫وستحصد نتائج مضمونة‪ ،‬في هذه‬ ‫الحالة أرحب باإلستثمار فيه‪ ،‬لكن ال‬ ‫تفعل ذلك ألن الجميع يقول لك أنه‬ ‫يجب عليك ذلك‪ ،‬أو أن الجميع يفعل‬ ‫ذلك‪ .‬ابحث عن الوضوح والنهج الواعي‪،‬‬ ‫وعن ما يناسبك كعالمة تجارية ‪ ،‬وما الذي تحاول إيصاله من‬ ‫خالل سعيك للحصول على دعم المشاهير للعالمة التجارية‪.‬‬ ‫س‪ :‬ما هي خططك بخصوص ‪ Native‬في المستقبل ؟‬ ‫ج‪ :‬أن نأخذ ‪ Native‬على خريطة العالم لماركات الجلود‬ ‫الفاخرة‪.‬‬

‫س‪ :‬تتضمن رؤيتك ‪ /‬شعارك التجاري ‪ « Native‬تحدي لمفهوم‬ ‫«الوعي بالعالمة التجارية»‪ ،‬ما مدى صعوبة اختراق سوق‬ ‫المنتجات الفاخرة في منطقتنا‪ ،‬حيث يسعى المستهلكون‬ ‫دوما خلف العالمات التجارية العالمية الفاخرة ؟‬

‫س‪ :‬نصيحتك لمصممي األزياء الناشئين حول بدء عمل‬ ‫تجاري في دبي والعالم العربي؟‬

‫ج‪ :‬إن فكرة استراتيجيات التسويق تتطور باستمرار‪ ،‬مع مراعاة‬ ‫االحتياجات المتغيرة للمستهلك المتحرر‪ ،‬كان نهجنا هو‬ ‫التخلي عن فكرة االفتراض واتخاذ نهج تجريبي أكثر‪ .‬إذا لم‬ ‫شخصا ما خيا ًرا‪ ،‬فأنت تفترض أنه يقرر بالفعل ما يختاره‪،‬‬ ‫تمنح‬ ‫ً‬ ‫بينما في الواقع‪ ،‬يتم تقديم نفس الطبق اليه مرا ًرا وتكرا ًرا‬ ‫للمستهلك‪ ،‬لكن تبدأ الحقيقة في الظهور عندما يكون‬ ‫لدى المستهلكين بالفعل خيار‪ ،‬وهذا ما رأيناه بالضبط‪ ،‬حين‬ ‫أصبحت ‪ Native‬عالمة تجارية إللهام النساء في المنطقة‪،‬‬ ‫وأوجدت اتجاه فريد في طريقة تعبيرهن عن أنفسهن‪،‬‬

PASHION meets up with Walter De Silva, the unique Italian designer whose long and illustrious journey in design takes him from cars to shoes. A career that kicked off at Italian automobile maker Fiat in 1972 and today sees him as the CEO of his namesake women premium footwear brand Walter De Silva. In an exclusive interview he talks about his obsession with design, facing challenges of the foot-wear market and the new spring/summer 2021 collection.

Q: Do you believe a creative person can design anything?

A: I think all passionate creatives can express and transmit emotions through drawing. Curiosity and continuous research into things that require formal concepts have always been my field of interest, I believe in answers with aesthetic to the product functionality.

My artistry in design across a wide range of products not only the cars but also for example, a chair for Poltrona Frau or a camera for Leica. Today I seek to integrate my skill-sets and methodology to my own footwear brand Walter De Silva. Hence as a multidisciplinary, 360° designer myself, I do believe a creative person can design anything.

Q: The shoe industry is a very competitive market. How do you set yourself apart from the competition?

A: Each pair is 100% created and handcrafted in Italy; all our materials, from the leather to the thread, are sourced from Italy which is a rare find in the fashion industry. Moreover, we strongly believe in ethically made, limited editions.

Therefore we concentrate on only one collection per year to comply with our ethical fashion philosophy as well as qualitative designs. We aim to differentiate ourselves from others by stepping back from the competition or big trends, but by respecting our heritage and following our core values of timelessness and high-quality shoes that are long lasting and as stylish as ever for women of all age.

Q: Tell us about the annual limitededition collection.

A: As said before, we are ethical and try to be the most sustainable possible. This is a way to confirm that, by fighting mass production and waste. It is also a way of being more exclusive and luxurious for our clients.

Q: What is the core difference from designing cars to shoes?

Q: Do you plan to create shoes for men?

A: I must say the biggest difference lies in the complexity. A car is a complicated object that must be designed simply for those who drive it. On the other hand the evening shoe is a simple object that is in the sophisticated game of elegance for those who wear it. I feel that I can express my creativity in many domains. The footwear and automotive industry are two different sectors, however my motto applies to both, it is the “form in motion”.

A: Not for now, maybe in the future.

Q: How do you describe your brand’s DNA? A: The main essence of Walter De Silva is in its timelessness.

Shoes as cars are beauty elements in movement and movement is the key to my designs. As a child, my grandparents worked as artisans running a small business in the women sector, producing footwear worn by the ladies of the Milanese bourgeoisie. I am today recreating a childhood dream: to succeed my grandparents’ business designing elegant and timeless women’ shoes as my first 72

A: Our very first capsule collection 2021 “Buongiorno!” is at the pinnacle of its timeless and eternally sophisticated panache adding exclusive value of easy-to-wear shoes to the brand’s existing collection.

We aim to expand our product range and create for the active generation a more casual heel to a more affordable price while remaining luxury and still being 100% made in Italy. The capsule collection will be presented in April 2021.

Q: Your Italian but your atelier is in Munich. Why? A: In 2004 the Volkswagen group asked me to work for them and I moved to Germany with my family. I really liked it here and we decided to stay.

Of course I travel normally a lot back to Italy where my heart belongs ( not now because covid ). We often go to Cinque Terre, where I feel like home too.

‫إلتقت ‪ PASHION‬مع والتر دي سيلفا المصمم اإليطالي‬ ‫الفريد‪ ،‬والذي أخذته رحلته الطويلة والرائعة في التصميم‪،‬‬ ‫من السيارات إلى األحذية‪ .‬بدأت حياته المهنية في شركة‬ ‫فيات اإليطالية لصناعة السيارات عام ‪ ،1972‬واليوم هو‬ ‫الرئيس التنفيذي لعالمة األحذية النسائية الفاخرة ‪Walter‬‬ ‫‪ ،De Silva‬والتي تحمل إسمه أيضا‪ .‬في مقابلة حصرية‪ ،‬تحدث‬ ‫عن هوسه بالتصميم‪ ،‬ومواجهة تحديات سوق األحذية‪ ،‬كما‬ ‫أخبرنا عن مجموعة ربيع ‪ /‬صيف ‪ 2021‬الجديدة‪.‬‬ ‫س‪ :‬هل تعتقد أن المبدع يمكنه أن يصمم أي شئ؟‬ ‫ج‪ :‬أعتقد أن كل المبدعين الشغوفين يمكنهم التعبير‬ ‫عن المشاعر ونقلها من خالل الرسم‪ .‬ولطالما كان الفضول‬ ‫والبحث المستمر في األشياء التي تتطلب مفاهيم رسمية‬ ‫مجال اهتمامي‪ ،‬وأنا أؤمن باإلجابات بالنواحي الجمالية على‬ ‫األداء الوظيفي للمنتج‪.‬‬ ‫إن براعتي الفنية في التصميم‬ ‫والتي تمتد عبر مجموعة كبيرة‬ ‫من المنتجات التي ال تقتصر‬ ‫على السيارات فحسب ولكنها‬ ‫أيضا على سبيل‬ ‫تمتد لتشمل ً‬ ‫المثال‪ ،‬كرسي لشركة ‪Poltrona‬‬ ‫‪ Frau‬أو كاميرا لشركة ‪ .Leica‬وأنا‬ ‫اليوم أسعى إلى تطبيق مهاراتي‬ ‫ومنهجياتي على ماركة األحذية‬ ‫الخاصة بي ‪.WALTER DE SILVA‬‬ ‫مصمما شامال‬ ‫ومن ثم‪ ،‬وبصفتي‬ ‫ً‬ ‫متعدد التخصصات‪ ،‬أعتقد أن‬ ‫الشخص المبدع يمكنه تصميم‬ ‫أي شيء‪.‬‬ ‫س‪ :‬ما هو الفرق الرئيسي بين‬ ‫تصميم السيارات وتصميم‬ ‫األحذية؟‬ ‫ج‪ :‬يمكنني القول بأن االختالف‬ ‫األكبر يكمن في التعقيد‪.‬‬ ‫فالسيارة شيء معقد للغاية يجب‬ ‫تصميمه ببساطة لمن يقودها‪،‬‬ ‫بينما نجد أن حذاء المساء مثال‬ ‫بالنسبة لمن يرتديه هو عنصر‬ ‫بسيط في لعبة األناقة المعقدة‪.‬‬ ‫أشعر أنه يمكنني التعبير عن‬ ‫إبداعي في العديد من المجاالت‪ .‬فال شك أن صناعة األحذية‬ ‫والسيارات قطاعان مختلفان تماما‪ ،‬ولكن شعاري ينطبق‬ ‫على كليهما‪ ،‬فكالهما «شكل جميل يتحرك»‪.‬‬ ‫س‪ :‬كيف تصف السمات األساسية لعالمتك التجارية؟‬ ‫ج‪ :‬يكمن جوهر ‪ WALTER DE SILVA‬في خلودها‪ .‬فاألحذية‬ ‫كالسيارات هي عناصر جمالية تتحرك والحركة هي مفتاح‬ ‫تصاميمي‪ .‬عندما كنت طف ً‬ ‫ال‪ ،‬كان أجدادي يعملون كحرفيين‬ ‫يديرون شركة صغيرة في قطاع المنتجات النسائية‪ ،‬وكانوا‬ ‫ينتجون أحذية ترتديها سيدات الطبقة البرجوازية بميالنو‪ .‬أنا‬ ‫اليوم أعيد صنع حلم الطفولة وهو أن أواصل عمل أجدادي‬ ‫في مجال تصميم األحذية النسائية األنيقة والخالدة فأول‬ ‫أهدافي هو التأكيد على أصالة ورقي هذه األحذية التي تم‬ ‫تصميمها وصنعها في إيطاليا‪.‬‬ ‫‪PASHION summer ‘21‬‬

A sparkling story of two Saudi female entrepreneurs.

Saudi artist Jalila Nayil founded House of Laith in 2018 with a desire to translate her love for minimal designs and simple living into her clothing and accessory lines. As an artist, her creative approach to digital images, canvas paintings and photography, earned her recgnition in the local design circles and at international exhibitions. Sarah Abudawood, Saudi jewelry designer and entrepreneur currently based in Dubai, founded Yataghan Jewellery in 2008. The gemologist (G.G.) with a degree from the International Gemological Institute (IGI) in Antwerp, Belgium and accredited Jewelry Professional (AJP) from GIA London and holder of a master’s degree in business administration takes inspiration from architecture, and strongly gravitates towards bold lines and geometric shapes. In conversation with Laurent Dordet, CEO, Hermès Horloger.

In the aftermath of last April’s Watches & Wonders event in Geneva, PASHION talks with Laurent Dordet, CEO of Hermès Horloger. Today a key player in the fine watch making industry, the famous French luxury house unveiled it’s latest creations, the Hermès H08, the Faubourg Polka, The Slim d’Hermès C’est la fête and the Arceau Pocket Aaaaargh! Withstanding time, Laurent Dordet shares his vision and strategy on the evolution of Hermès time pieces.

Q: What are your strategies to weather the challenges caused by financial crisis and pandemic?

A: As per the figures the group just disclosed Hermès did quite well as the first quarter of 2021 confirmed the acceleration in sales in the group’s stores, with a strong growth of +51% compared to 2020, and of +41% compared to the first quarter of 2019. In case of watch-making we even topped the 2020 numbers. Sales increased by 96% in the first quarter, reflecting the house’s technical watch- making expertise and creativity of the collections. In general the Hermès business model is extremely resilient, because it’s all about craftsmanship, know-how and creativity. When hard 86

times come, not only in 2020, but in the years before, in 2009, Hermès is resilient because it’s a brand that offers reassurance through its authentic values. It gives customers reassurance and grows loyalty and makes him/her quite eager to continue buying Hermès. But apart from this, our watch collection has developed in the past five years and we are really moving up market. More refined, more precious, more complex and offering more ready-to-wear models for men and women. So the products have been the cause of growth even though 2020 was very crazy.

And you will see that in one month, our figures of 2021 were even with better results.

It is also important to notice that Hermès has been very inventive in retail, especially to maintain and develop some new links between the store and the final customer, developing a lot of special services and special releases.

We invite customers to our factory, the boutiques inviting three to five customers under very safe conditions. Each country has its own developed agility and new practices of retail, which were accelerated in 2020, and definitely will benefit Hermès in the months to come in growing new customers, enriching customer’s experiences and enhancing

customer loyalty.

Q: How do you estimate the current e-commerce and virtual customer experience will develop post pandemic?

A: It will be a shift, an acceleration of a kind, acceleration of the use of these digital tools. Hermès was a pioneer of e-commerce, including watches. We entered back in 2002 which means 20 years before the big start of the e-commerce. We invested five years ago to have a worldwide presence. So before it was a jump between any channel the customer experienced, whether from physical to digital or from digital to physical. It still is, but it’s true that 2020 has accelerated the purchase concluded on e-commerce. I am absolutely convinced that this online channel experience will prevail for sure. I think the percentage of sales concluded through e-commerce will increase, but not that much. I see that the physical experience is the key, and that is what our customers are expecting from Hermès. But another key is also to have many channels, including the digital one.

Q: Is the customer of Hermès watches an extension of the customer of the ready-to-wear, handbags and leather goods?

A: I would say yes and no. The watch integration is only 10 years old which means that the legitimacy is a challenge in the industry (meaning with our own manufacture movement launched in 2011 but we are doing watches since 1978).

Today everyone can see we are doing a very serious job in terms of quality and technique. But to change the mindset of people and convince them that we are on the same level of quality of other highend watchmakers is always a challenge. Which explains why in the first period, our customers were mostly in love with Hermès watches for the style and for the authenticity. They were eager to buy the Hermes watch rather than another famous watch brands.

But what has changed over the last three years is that we have watches with complications. That raised our legitimacy as a watch maker. And now on top of our loyal customers and our fans, we have more and more watch collectors, men and women from all over the world, who would definitely visit Hermès especially for ladies time pieces where we are now really competing with serious watchmakers. It’s the reason why our sales have been booming over the last months.

Q: Is design the key in competing in the ladies watch segment ?

A: No, not only design. The common point between Hermès and other watch brands, is that we are a part of an original industry of Swiss designers and Swiss technology. I believe we all have the same feel of a watch and the same level of quality, the customers can recognize the technical work we do. We compete also in our creativity which is not only about style, but also about fantasy that we translate in our movements in and our complications.

Q: Are woman looking at Hermes watches as a fashion and style item rather than looking at the quality of the technical movement?

A: No, it’s changing. No one buys a watch nowadays to know what time it is, so the functional part of the watch has almost disappeared. Watches today for men are a piece of jewelry, a toy, a status symbol. Of course style is the key, but a lot of ladies and men for sure would not just go for style if they are not trusting the brands in terms of quality and legitimacy. So that’s why now step by step, our lady customers are expanding from only fashion oriented to a fashion oriented lady, totally aware and concerned about the technique.

Q: What is the entry price point and what are the prices of high jewelry watches?

A: We are probably one of the brands that is most vastly expanding from Euros 2000 to Euros 1 million for ladies watches, as well for men watches where prices range from Euros 3000 to Euros 500,000. An important part of the business model that we kept is to stay affordable for young people looking for quality products. The same applies to the Hermès bags. We are delighted that we still present affordable items. The past five years we have been adding additional products, that range from 3000 to 5000 , from 5000 to 10,000, from 10,000 to 20,000 and from 20,000 to 50,000. So it’s a very balanced business. According to the different markets, we have a different mix of different segments, but in the end, each segment is really booming.

Q: Can the hard-to-get brand positioning of an Hermès Birkin or Kelly be adapted to the watch segment?

A: For the leather goods and for the watch making, it is the same answer: we are not only an elitist brand. We conceive and manufacture many objects. Of course the price would differ depending to the material we use. We always use the finest materials but of course metal or silver is not the same as gold and platinum. We are extremely happy to seduce younger customers with affordable but still high qualitative products. We never compromise on quality, and of course if we can retain these customers, as they get older with more income, with more refined, complex items, technology and materials like gold , then we are happy.

Q: What is your e-commerce positioning strategy?

A: We have been doing our own e-commerce which is very important and selling watches is very significant for our business. But there are just a few external platforms that we partner with. Regarding watches we entered Net-a-Porter two years ago and entered a big watch lover platform in the USA very recently. Until now we are happy with being on Net-a-Porter, as it gives us a broad reach to a very qualified audience of fashion oriented ladies, which I believe is good for us, and is doing great business and it is a window.

Swiss watchmaker Montres Etoile launched it’s first complication, an automatic, tri-retrograde, Islamic Lunar and Gregorian Dual - calendar timepiece with moon face.

This complicated wristwatch is completed by a complication module made by Agenhor in Geneva and is housed in a steel watchcase.

To integrate the Islamic calendar that started in 622 AD, together with the conventional Gregorian calendar on a mechanical wristwatch is a unique feature worldwide. The Etoile dual-calendar wristwatch is housed in an octangular shaped watchcase measuring 42mm in diameters indicating hours and minutes with two large hands in the center of the dial.
