descendant of Egypt’s Ottoman ruler Mohamed Ali Pasha, Yaz Bukey launched her namesake brand in 2000. Her first collection of Plexiglas jewelry was entirely snapped up by Swedish singing sensation Bjork. The rest is history and her story.

A story that reads like a princess diary filled with beautiful homes and people, lavish lifestyle and travel, and a career that was a dream come true. The young lady eloquent in five languages grew up in many places including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Algeria and the Netherlands and eventually ended up in Paris where she enrolled at the prestigious Studio Bercot, and shortly after graduating in 1995 landed coveted internships with Martine Sitbon, Alexander McQueen at Givenchy, and Maison Martin Margiela before landing a job with Jeremy Scott as his first assistant for two seasons. In 1999 Yaz left Scott to launch her accessories line Yazbukey, originally conceived with her sister Emel, a textile designer at Christian Lacroix, to create a line of accessories to dress up a black dress, from shoes to bags and jewelry. Inspired by the Technicolor world of musicals and cinema, the collection was an instant hit.

Today the label has carved out a niche for itself as a playful intellectual brand that mines the world of pop culture to create tongue-in-cheek Plexiglas jewels and accessories. The Turkish designer continues to be inspired by a combination of musical tunes ranging from Vincent Minelli to Gershwin, literary tales of La Fontaine and Grimm as well as the movies of Hitchcock and Tim Burton.

Yaz also designed quirky runway accessories for the likes of Rue du Mail, Diane von Furstenberg and Zac Posen, as well as created iconic products for some of Paris’ most famous establishments such as Laduree, where she created a limited addition gift box of cherry macaroons inspired by her childhood memories.

‫‪“What attracted me to Plexiglas is its chameleon-like‬‬ ‫‪properties. I’m very much interested in trompe l’oeil,‬‬ ‫‪or blurring the lines between what is real and fake,‬‬ ‫‪and Plexiglas provides the perfect medium to explore‬‬ ‫‪those themes,” observed the designer, who combines her‬‬ ‫‪favorite material with everything from leather to metal‬‬ ‫‪and macramé. “I’ve spent a lot of time trying to refine‬‬ ‫‪the various techniques of working with Plexiglas. I’m‬‬ ‫‪intere I’m interested in finding new ways of rendering a‬‬ ‫‪very industrial material in luxuries ways, such as using a‬‬ ‫‪lot of hand-crafted techniques to make jewelry,” explained‬‬ ‫‪Yaz, who as a child would spend hours with her sister‬‬ ‫‪playing with machines in her uncle’s Plexiglas factory.‬‬

Qatar Qatari based Egyptian designer Yasmin Mansour’s first rtw collection for ss/15 reflects her personality. Drawing inspiration from nature Butterflies and flowers are transformed into sharp triangle shapes which indicate strength and courage.

The collection is built around capes, the signature of her brand. Dubai Madiyah Al Sharqi’s ss/15 collection debuted on Moda Operandi last January as the first Arab designer to be showcased on the online shopping site.

The daughter of the ruler of Fujeirah, opted for 70’s nostalgia with elegant off-shoulder pieces, ruffles and billowing sleeves, drawing inspiration from her muse Marie Antoinette. Moonage daydream: an alien journey through the past’s ideas of the future to reach the point of today.

In the Spring-Summer Haute Couture collection, Raf Simons, Artistic Director of Christian Dior, looks to the romance of a near past, when space-age and mind-expanding ideas of a future felt full of possibilities for society, pop culture and fashion. Embracing a hallucinogenic amalgamation in the imagination, periods of time are conflated, mixing the traditional with the experimental in materials and techniques. Testing the strengths and pushing the limits of the haute couture ateliers, there is stratification of history in richly layered guipure lace, thickly embroidered with paillettes, and covered in photo-printed plastic shifts, gilets and opera coats. Intricate, tour-de-force appliqued 54

pleating heightens this sense of the decorative becoming the architecturally structured in the collection while new fastening systems in lacquered leather also structure and decorate.

Embroidered navy rose ‘tattoo’ body suits and graphic knitted all-in-ones are worn as a second skin as are vinyl boots in acid bright colours. The typical Dior ‘femme fleur’ is subverted and liberated in the collection. Made unfamiliar, futuristic, graphic and decisive in her encrusted and dripping lace florals, tattoo body suits and hyper-real plastic blossom prints, she is at once exquisitely decorated and disruptive in her mirrored, octagonal terrain of the show venue.

“I was always thinking of the future for so many years and I was always anti-romanticising the past, but the past can be beautiful too.There is a sense of the romance of the fifties, with the experimentation of the sixties and the liberation of the seventies in the collection – both in its materialisation and attitude. But I really wanted to express something that felt relevant for today, learnt from then, from the point of view of now; something wilder, more sexual, strange and certainly more liberated for the haute couture and for women.�

A lesson in homegrown fashion.

W

e met up with Nisha Jagtiani in Dubai Mall at the flagship store of ICONIC for a walk through of this season’s biggest trends in store. I was truly impressed as she had a detailed description for every item I laid my hands on. The youngest and very recently appointed Director of the Landmark Group, Nisha previously held the position of Business Head of ICONIC, one of the biggest growing homegrown brands our region has to offer. What some might credit to the benefits of being born into a family business, many know that the 30-year old heiress always had the choice of opting to a pampered life off the family business premises. After completing her studies from London she joined the Landmark Group and started working closely with Raza Beig on the brand Splash. Her mentor and closest friend as she refers to him, is the CEO of Splash & ICONIC, the group’s largest high-street fashion retail chain. Raza has over the years been instrumental in guiding Nisha and both of them have worked closely to launch ICONIC, a fashion lifestyle destination which was the dream of Micky Jagtiani, Chairman, Landmark Group. The brand was positioned as a fashion high street brand with an aim to compete regionally.

The plan worked and five years down the road, ICONIC today operates 29 stores the UAE, KSA, Kuwait and Qatar and looking to open another 15 stores by the end of 2016 in current and new markets such as Egypt, Bahrain and Oman.Juggling many roles both at the Group level & still being actively involved with ICONIC, Nisha chooses to work closely with the design team of 25 in-house designers at ICONIC. She collectively works on the entire process of design & sign offs with the brand’s senior management on the four collections which ICONIC releases each year. The team works together on signing off initial mood boards with the overall color and fabric directions, followed by shapes, collection and catwalk story-boards and then sample presentations until sealer samples. “Although following the latest international trends I believe ICONIC’s edge over the competition also lies in being a regional brand. That allows us to be able to understand and adapt to our customers needs and have the ability to think for them and adapt to the subtleties of their mindset,”she adds. A fixture on both the social as well as the fashion industry scene in Dubai, she also recently made headlines when she got appointed as one of the 12 board members of the Dubai Fashion & Design Council launched in November 2014. Additionally, being a driving force behind the bi-annual FFWD, the regional fashion platform for emerging designers from our region, she is part of the Committee for Education and Fashion on the Council. With many tasks to juggle, the young lady has a bright future ahead, thatmight just include expanding Iconic internationally, one day. With Dubaibeing the shopping hub with the second largest number of brands in theworld after London, this local success story might just have what it takes to become a global player.

FFWD Season 5 fuels regional designers.

ast April saw the fifth edition of FFWD. The region’s definitive fashion platform presenting catwalk shows and presentations by 25 of the best couture and ready-to- wear designers from across the Arab world, offer visitors to discover and shop over 40 regional accessories designers in The Garden retail space and give local fashionistas to benefit from talks and panel discussions by international industry experts that included Diane Pernet’s presentation on the relationship between fashion and film. The last day offered an industry-only day held on site at Dubai Design District (d3) further cementing FFWD’s commitment to bolstering the regional industry in all aspects of the fashion business.

Buyers and press browsed the designers’ collections up close, attended focused workshops and two panel discussions addressing the topics of buying in the region and fashion critique. PASHION gives you the key looks from all the collections.

o one can deny that the past few years had witnessed the rise of Los Angeles as the new frontier of fashion on its way to Paris and New York status. It might not host a fashion week, yet, but the diversity and laid-back lifestyle of the City of Angels contributes to a unique environment known for its strong creative vibe. It might have started when Hedi Slimanes moved to LA to start advancing and pursuing his photography career after he resigned from the house of Dior back in 2007. He later shocked the global fashion world with his decision to headquarter the Parisian-based Saint Laurent offices in LA. Having rigorously explored the three-known fashion capitals, I have noticed that Southern California has something new to offer to the global fashion scene; it's sartorial mindset and cool crowd are tangibly readjusting the way they perceive fashion. When every city in the world sticks to a signature style, LA just happens to be sort of anti-style. Unlike the high-fashion design from the runway shows, LA's fashion scene is comfy and flawy and tends to focus on active-wear, personal edgy styles and modernity. With the rise of the sportswear trend and experimenting with design as well as the presence of big selections of world-class galleries and trendy stores, the fashion world is beginning to see how LA is in tune with modern-day style. We browsed through the neighborhoods from the famous streets of Melrose to the hidden gems of Los Feliz to bring you the most stylish and must-visit destinations.

A decade or so ago the area that was once an asylum and a paradise ghetto for so many artists despite it's crime-scene has become a hip strip thanks to the urban renaissance with the opening of the mom-and-pop retailers. However after the demographical change, an impact on the community's urbanlifestyle's authenticity that once had a quaint hometown feel was clear with the opening of flagships of pre-existing foreign brands.

Undeterred by the changes, the district that has always been an enclave for bohemians has managed to preserve its identity and adjust to the transition.

A few unique stores that are worth mentioning are Kendall Conrad, a high-end local brands that offers handcrafted artisanal, leather hand-bags that are both luxurious and timeless. General Store as the name states has a little bit of everything, incredible and whimsical collections of vintage and crafty clothing, jewelry and home accessories, anything from geodesic planters to dainty turquoise jewelry.

Alternatively, one can find stores such as Satine, which stocks international high-end designers such as Nina Ricci, Lanvin, Balenciaga, Isabel Marant and Azzedine Alaia as well as unique indie labels like Rue du Mail and Tsumori Chisato, where you can shop for relaxed luxury pieces.

Once described as the more polished younger sister to artsy Abbot Kinney and located in Santa Monica, is a genuine fashion check-point not to be neglected. More than sixty vibrant and upscale stores are dotted along the tree-lined charming ten block shopping district that stretched between 6th - 17th street. Everything from retail to decor, beauty boutiques and jewelry galleries as well as eateries are chic and relaxed and visit to this district will offers both retail and spa therapy to replenish your wardrobe and energy.

Neighboring the area, Brambila Salon is like no other, located right on Ocean Avenue, enjoy a unique hair experience and get pampered while enjoying the scenic ocean view. Start on La Cienega and head east towards Melrose Avenue where you will find RTH and RTH2, very cool native American brand with a twist, and Tenoversix, one of the most thriving multi-brand boutiques with a Cali-vibe.
