In 2015 and right after finishing her interior design masters in Milan the architect Nourane Abdel-Latif has joined the design team of Living in Qatar. Studio Brynjar & Veronika present everyday blinds in crystal, bringing a meteorological phenomenon of reflection, refraction and dispersion of light into the home. 30 bespoke prismic slats have been tailor-made to create a fully functional blind which creates a rainbow effect when it is hit by light. ‘Reflections of water’ is a series of crystal tiles that transform light into water-like reflections on surrounding surfaces, bringing the outside in. Made using a 3D scan of water, the tiles look like liquid crystal and reflect light as only water can.The third element is a set of decorative crystal sticks in an assortment of colors, which illuminate the shadows and explore the transparency of crystal, with shafts of light translated into subtle projections of color.

London-based Japanese sound artist Yuri Suzuki explores crystal as an acoustic material Sharevari, a mechanical, interactive with crystallophone that consists of 16 brass mechanical structures or ‘notes’, each one featuring a handmade crystal form. When brass hammers hit the crystal, the vibrations are translated into beautiful, pure sound. Created in collaboration with a team of Swarovski’s engineersand original compositions by Suzuki, via a network of sensors, makes Sharevari a unique and immersive experience.

Araz Fazaeli is probably best known as the man behind The Teheran Times, the hugely popular Iranian street-style blog he founded in 2012. While Fazaeli’s blog aims are largely cultural and artistic—sharing Iranian street fashion with other, predominantly Western, audiences—Fazaeli also has larger motives of promoting cross-cultural understanding. In a September 2013 interview with The Atlantic Post, Fazaeli explains: “I have realized that people have a wrong understanding of us.

They believe what they see in the news and even though a lot of it is true there is much more to see ... That is the side that I am trying to show. I don’t think many have portrayed that about Iranian women before.”

In October 2015 he presented his first couture collection of Maison Araz Fazaeli at the Art District Gallery at The Royal Monceau Hotel Paris and now his current ss’16 collection is available exclusively at Paris’ Les Suites Boutique. His work has an international and cross-cultural flair, that is probably due to him having lived in Teheran, Vancouver, Geneva and now in Paris. Inspiration of his latest collection for fw ’16 called Craft Never Dies, comes from Iranian carpets and Iranian craftsmanship.

The Art Nouveau movement, a spiritual product of Europe’s Industrial Revolution spread the idea of art and design as part of everyday life.

Artists, designers and architects responded to technological progress embracing the aesthetic possibilities of using new materials in their art work such as cast iron. It was precisely in 1893, when Victor Horta introduced for the first time iron artworks that the public’s recognition and as well as enthusiastic response at the 1900 Exposition Universelle was won. highly decorative idiom employed elaborated curvilinear patterns of sinuous asymmetrical lines and floral and female forms. Consolidating sophistically a variety of materials, the style was applied in architecture, interior design, glassware, jewelry, poster art and illustration, as well as painting and sculpture. More a philosophy of life style promoting the beauty of everyday objects, the movement made art applicable on everything and available to everyone. Regarded today as an important bridge between the historicism of Neoclassicism and modernism, Art Nouveau was replaced in the 1920s by Art Deco.

CHINESE ART ALERT

Chinese art has arguably the oldest continuous tradition in the world. During the domination of the most significant dynasties of Han (206 BCE - 220 CE), Tang (618-906), Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911), Chinese art was bursting with vitality and optimism. Much of the finest work was produced by essentially unknown artists, in the various large Imperial workshops and was distributed internally and abroad on a huge scale to demonstrate the wealth and power of the emperors. The aesthetics characteristics of the Chinese art are quite distinguishable, full of symbolism and metaphysical references. Unlike Western artists, Chinese painters were not interested in creating a true-life depiction of the world.

Instead they focused on expressing the inner essence of the subject, using the interaction of the yin (female) and yang (male) life forces. Rocks and streams were seen as “live” things, visible manifestations of the invisible forces of the cosmos. Specific symbols such as bamboo represents a spirit which can be bent by circumstance but not broken; jade represents purity; a dragon often symbolizes the emperor; the crane, long life; a pair of ducks, fidelity in marriage. Plant symbols include the orchid, another symbol of purity and loyalty and the pine tree, which symbolizes endurance.The Chinese believed in an afterlife. Stylized elegant and polychrome terracotta figures, among which horses and dogs, dancers and concubines, guardians and earth-spirits manifested the Han and Tang vision of a happy and prosperous life.

the ART‫الفنى‬ SCENE ‫امل�شهد‬ Tuline El Chourbagui was born in Lebanon in 1987 and raised in Cairo, Egypt. She completed her BA in Art and Architecture at AUC in 2009, then went on to the Academia D’Arte in Florence, Italy, to develop her techniques in painting. Since 2007, Chourbagui has exhibited her work in several group and solo art exhibitions around Cairo.

She describes her paintings as a form of expression, a revelation. Chourbagui manages to capture raw and fleeting emotions and translates them into dynamic paintings. She understands that this ever-changing life is all too complex to elucidate otherwise, and painting becomes the perfect means to express our existence. “Art is independent of absolute duration”, explains Tuline. Snapshots of a certain state or a certain emotion are translated through energy with paint. The artist challenges the impermanent nature of life by capturing this state of mind and art becomes in fact a permanent depiction of impermanence.

French curators Stéphanie and Frédéric Chambre assembled the hotel’s art collection, which includes works from important movements over the 250 years since Baccarat’s founding. Commissioned original art and one-of-a-kind furniture complete the opulent interiors of one of New York’s most exclusive spots.

Entering the lobby, guests will be mesmerized by a 20-by-25-foot wall adorned with more than 2,000 of Baccarat’s most iconic glasses, the Harcourt. Each custom-sized glass has been laid horizontally, and lit by an LED light to create a -24hour light show.

The world was shocked when Iraqiborn, British architect Zaha Hadid died on March 31st in a Miami hospital where she was treated for Bronchitis, aged 65.

I feel privileged to have met that commanding woman, that in a field dominated by men had overcome numerous obstacles to make her eternal mark in the industry. Hadid’s buildings have been commissioned around the world; her designs and legacy include the London Aquatics Center for the 2012 Olympic Games, the Galaxy Soho in Beijing, the Rosenthal Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati and Rome’s Maxxi Museum. Her honors and awards seem endless, and maybe pinnacled when she was made a dame commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 2012.

Today it is my turn to pay tribute to a remarkable woman whose work is probably amongst the most recognizable ones and most imitated 64 living in

ones. She is also probably the most impressive woman I ever came across.

I first met Zaha in 2009 in London when we commissioned her company for the design of one of Cairo’s major residential and commercial projects, the Nile Tower. I was immediately struck and won over by her persona.

I got to know her much closer upon her several visits to Cairo while working on the project, that she herself presented to the local Government officials in 2010. No one will ever forget that meeting. She was in complete command with such an incredibly strong personality. That artistic genius inside her, her knowledge, enthusiam and her passion for her work, just seemed to pour out and spill over on everyone else.

The 2011 revolution has brought the Nile Tower project to a temporary hold, but we are optimistic that soon we will be able to turn one of Zaha’s last major designs into reality, as part of her legacy that will live on forever.

‫يف حياتي على الإطالق‪.‬‬ ‫كان �أول لقاء جمعنى بزها عام ‪ ٢٠٠٩‬يف‬ ‫لندن عندما قمنا بتكليف �رشكتها بت�صميم‬ ‫برج النيل والذي يعد �أحد �أكرب امل�شاريع‬ ‫ال�سكنية والتجارية يف القاهرة‪ .‬لقد �أ�رستني‬ ‫�شخ�صيتها وا�ستولت على قلبي يف التو‬ ‫واللحظة‪.‬‬ ‫وفيما بعد واتتني الفر�صة لكي �أتعرف عليها‬ ‫عن قرب خالل زياراتها املتعددة للقاهرة‬ ‫�أثناء عملها يف امل�رشوع الذي قدمته بنف�سها‬ ‫�إىل امل�سئولني يف احلكومة امل�رصية عام‬ ‫أبدا �أن ين�سى ذلك‬ ‫‪ .٢٠١٠‬ال �أحد ي�ستطيع � ً‬ ‫االجتماع‪ .‬فلقد كانت قاب�ضة ب�إحكام على‬ ‫زمام الأمور بتلك ال�شخ�صية القوية ب�صورة‬ ‫ال ُت�صدق‪ .‬فالعبقرية الفنية بداخلها‪،‬‬ ‫ومعرفتها الوا�سعة و�شغفها بعملها‪ ،‬كل ذلك‬ ‫بدا وك�أنه يتدفق منها ويفي�ض على كل من‬ ‫حولها‪.‬‬ ‫وبعد اندالع ثورة ‪ ،٢٠١١‬توقف العمل‬ ‫بامل�رشوع ب�صورة م�ؤقتة‪ ،‬لكننا يحدونا‬ ‫التفا�ؤل ب�أننا �سنتمكن يف وقت قريب من‬ ‫حتويل �آخر الت�صميمات العظيمة لزها‬ ‫العظيمة �إىل واقع ملمو�س‪ ،‬كجزء من‬ ‫تراثها الذي �سيبقى �إىل الأبد‪.‬‬
