Welcome!
Our young musicians have already been very busy this fall. Just a few weeks ago, three of our ensembles joined the La Cañada High School choirs and drumline for a stirring performance celebrating the music of award-winning Spanish composer, Oscar Navarro. This program was the culminating event in Oscar’s artist-in-residence with the La Cañada Sisters Cities Organization, and o ered our ensembles the rare opportunity to perform with choir (and drumline!), and to work with a living composer.
While our young musicians are thriving along their personal musical journeys, we know that many of our families continue to feel the lasting impacts and struggles from the fires. The outpouring of support from our community for our instrument drive helped us donate and repair more than 300 instruments to those in need and made a real impact on the lives of families a ected by the fires.
We are grateful to the many partners that continue to support our education programs, including Cathay Bank, Helen and Will Webster Foundation, Dwight Stewart Youth Fund, Green Foundation, Ann Peppers Foundation, Pasadena Community Foundation and many more.
Did you know that nearly 40% of our 700+ PYSO musicians receive some form of PYSO tuition assistance? We remain committed to o ering every child who wants to perform in PYSO a seat in an ensemble, regardless of financial ability, but we need your help. As we face unprecedented levels of decreased funding for the arts, we rely on passionate supporters to ensure that we can deliver our musical commitment to our students. This year, more than ever, please consider donating or making a stretch donation if you have already given, to help us sustain our commitment to providing accessible music education in your community.

THE PASADENA YOUTH SYMPHONY
ORCHESTRAS
(PYSO) have been training tomorrow’s leaders since 1972. Now in its 54th year, PYSO is considered among the finest youth orchestra programs in the country and is the centerpiece of the Pasadena Symphony Association’s education o erings.
PYSO boasts 11 ensembles, serving students from 29 cities throughout Los Angeles County and the San Gabriel Valley, 21 school districts and 129 schools. In addition, PYSO provides Pasadena Unified School District with teaching artists to directly support music teachers in the classroom.
PYSO students immerse in rigorous repertoire, learn the art of ensemble playing, and explore their potential through weekly ensemble practice and instrumental sectionals.
Ensemble playing opportunities are available for all PYSO students no matter where they are in their musical studies. Following an audition, students are placed in an appropriate ensemble based on their age and ability. Students may stay in a rising ensemble for up to 3 years, depending on their level of playing as well as their personal commitment and maturity level. Each ensemble has a pathway from section player to principal, and each student’s journey will be different.
