We are thrilled to welcome you to the 59th Pasadena Showcase House of Design: Potter Daniels Manor, a treasured city landmark.

Originally, this house was built in 1902 as a graceful, shingle style structure by Joseph J. Blick for the Daniels family. In 1922, the home was magnificently transformed into an English Tudor Revival-style estate. The main house is over 8,000 square feet and was designed as a “story-book style” home by the Postle Company of Los Angeles, builders of the Pasadena Playhouse. An added bonus, and not to be missed, is the Gate House and Carriage House. We invite you to explore the beautiful grounds at your own pace. Please be sure to stop in our restaurant and pub for a refreshment. A trip to the Showcase House would not be the same without visiting our Shops at Showcase where you can uncover your very own treasures to take home.

Since its founding in 1948, Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts has been dedicated to supporting music and art in our community. Over the years, our members, all volunteers, have donated their time and talents to produce the Pasadena Showcase House of Design, one of the oldest, largest, and most successful house and garden tours in the nation. Through this event, we have raised over $25 million to support local music and arts programs.

The sheer dedication of our approximately 200 members is awe-inspiring. They work tirelessly to plan the renovation of an entire estate in just 90 days, with each room and garden transformed by a different design

Music Mobile ™ Since 1971, Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts, through its celebrated Music Mobile program, has brought the magic of music to third graders in and around San Gabriel Valley.

Since 2005, Pasadena Showcase has partnered with the Pasadena Conservatory of Music to deliver this often firsttime musical experience to young people.

Over the years, the program introduced classical music and instruments that make up an orchestra to nearly 130,000 students. Through an entertaining, child-friendly presentation, students received hands-on experience by gaining valuable exposure to symphonic music. The program received numerous local and national awards for originality and educational excellence.

At this time, a reinvention of our Music Mobile program is underway, which, once completed, will surprise and delight the students and teachers it serves now into the future. Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts and Pasadena Conservatory of Music saw an opportunity to bring the Music Mobile to relevancy by focusing on the basics of music: rhythm, harmony, melody, and color, which are common to all music traditions around the world.

The student experience will be illustrated through music-making and animation. The creative process continues and an exciting new Music Mobile program will launch in October 2025!

Youth Concert 2024 This year's Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts Youth Concert, Swan Lake: Reimagined took place as a part of the LA Phil Symphonies for Schools program.

For many elementary school students, our Youth Concert is their first experience seeing a concert with a live orchestra. Third, fourth, and fifth grade students from over 100 schools participated.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s timeless ballet composition Swan Lake inspired a revamped story for a modern audience by featuring selected pieces from the classic suite and ballet dancing accompaniment. The children were enthralled, experiencing the joy of music and dance.

Nearly 250,000 students have participated in Pasadena Showcase Youth Concerts since it began in 1953. For most it is an unforgettable experience that impacts them in a profound and positive way. Do you remember your first concert?

Our member volunteers assist with logistics on event day and are doubly rewarded by the concert itself and the children’s pleasure in it. The LA Phil Symphonies for Schools concert was funded in part by proceeds from Pasadena Showcase House of Design with appreciation to the Green Foundation for its generous support over the years.

Instrumental Competition

The Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts Instrumental Competition was held on March 3rd, 2024 at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music. Nine finalists performed to compete for $17,500 in prizes, generously underwritten by Kathryn and Charles Hofgaarden. From a pool of 29 applicants, the finalists, ages 14 to 18, performed for an esteemed panel of judges, all members of the LA Phil. The judges faced difficult decisions as they deliberated over the wonderfully talented performances.

The Grand Prize for Exceptional Talent and Musicianship was awarded to Hanbo Xu (clarinet), who attends The Webb Schools in Claremont, CA, pictured left with Pasadena Showcase President Suzanne Hart, Instrumental Chair Colleen Robertson, Head Judge, Michelle Tseng and the judges panel. Hanbo, whose teacher is Burt Hara, is principal clarinet in the Claremont Young Musicians Orchestra. The judges cited his excellent control and technique throughout, with his Stravinsky a “terrific, compelling performance.”

Over $650,000 in prize money has been awarded since the Instrumental Competition began in 1985. Many of our prizewinners enjoy distinguished careers in classical music.

Gifts & Grants Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts is pleased to announce the 2024 Gifts & Grants recipients.

From kids to seniors, we fund programs that enrich the community and provide opportunities for all ages. Our grant recipient’s repertoire runs the gamut from operas to orchestras, musical theater to dance programs, jazz bands to marching bands, choral groups to concerts.

Funds for our Gifts & Grants program come directly from our organization’s annual fundraiser, the Pasadena Showcase House of Design. To date, our fund-raising efforts have yielded more than $25 million, supporting music and arts programs from the greater Pasadena area and throughout Los Angeles County. Due to the phenomenal success of the 2023 Pasadena Showcase House, funding for this year’s Gifts & Grants program was extraordinary. Marking our 76th anniversary, we awarded $1,000,000 to 90 nonprofit organizations for their efforts to provide neighborhood performances, music therapy, music education, and scholarships that bring people together to learn, enjoy, and grow through music.

Special thanks go out to the Gifts & Grants Committee that conducted the interviews and reviewed applications, to our volunteer members, designers, patrons, vendors, and to our visitors, whose participation makes it all happen.

Originally named "El Roble" for the grand oak tree on its lawn, Potter Daniels Manor, designed by Joseph J. Blick in 1902 for Chicago socialite Gertrude Potter Daniels, served as the Daniels family's winter retreat.

Nestled amidst the verdant embrace of Pasadena, Potter Daniels Manor stands as a magnificent testament to timeless elegance and historical significance. Revered as the 2024 Pasadena Showcase House of Design and adorned with the prestigious designation of a Pasadena City Landmark, this exquisite estate bears witness to a bygone era of opulence and refinement.

Originally christened "El Roble" in homage to the majestic oak tree that once graced its front lawn, this architectural marvel was commissioned in 1902 by the esteemed Gertrude Potter Daniels, a luminary in Chicago's elite circles.

Designed by the visionary architect Joseph J. Blick, Potter Daniels Manor emerged as a sanctuary of grandeur, destined to cradle the Daniels family amidst its embrace during the winter months.

Through the corridors of time, this stately manor has played host to dignitaries and luminaries, including the famed President Theodore Roosevelt, whose presence graced its hallowed halls.

However, it was under the illustrious ownership of Susanna Bransford Emery Holmes, fondly known as the "Silver Queen" for her husband's successes in the Silver King Mines, that Potter Daniels Manor underwent a remarkable metamorphosis.

Inspired by her European sojourns, Mrs. Holmes embarked on a grand odyssey of architectural refinement, entrusting the artisans of the renowned Postle Company of Los Angeles to reimagine the manor into the brilliant English Tudor Revival Style masterpiece that stands today.

Beyond its high iron gates, on over an acre of meticulously manicured grounds, Potter Daniels Manor unfolds its majesty like the pages of a cherished storybook. Its façade, adorned with traditional brick, exudes an air of timeless romance, accentuated by the luminous dance of light through two-story leaded glass windows.

Crossing the threshold, guests are welcomed into a noble walnut-paneled foyer, where intricately carved banisters guide them towards the upper realms of opulence. On the first floor, a symphony of entertainment spaces awaits, from the banquetsized dining room to the stately living room, each exuding an aura of refined sophistication.

Embracing the fairytale essence of the 120-year-old English Tudor estate, inspiration for the Foyer came from the beautiful walnut woodwork, elaborate ceiling mural, and gorgeous stained-glass window. A starting point for the design was integrating the ceiling mural which was designed from the original hardware on the entry door.

Light, color, and textures were brought in to breathe fresh life into this stunning historical gem, while respecting the history of the space. Bringing in elements of flora and fauna, of woodland creatures, forests and birds, the space becomes regal, magical, and dripping in elegance, fitting for a baroness.

A custom mural from the acclaimed Hattas Art Studios adorns the walls, gorgeous custom and antique furniture are on display, and a stunning John Richard Glass Leaf Twenty-Six-Light Chandelier elevates the space to new heights. Restaurant Roe Japanese Fusion is an innovative playground for a classically-trained chef, and the on-site host restaurant at the Pasadena Showcase House of Design At Roe Japanese Fusion, the food creatively combines the dynamic flavors of Japanese cooking with the familiarity of American steakhouses. While focused on Sushi they also offer high quality steaks, each with its own unique flare.
