WHICH NEW

Michelin Tire ®

IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

MAXIMUM CONFIDENCE IN WET AND DRY CONDITIONS MILE AFTER MILE EXPERIENCE THE BEST WET GRIP FROM THE NEWEST SPORT TOURING TIRE ON THE MARKET The MICHELIN® Road 5 tire is the new benchmark in wet grip for sport touring tires. It offers superior wet grip versus all leading competitors due to patented MICHELIN XST Evo siping and our latest 2CT and 2CT+ tread compounds.4

MAINTAIN MAXIMUM CONFIDENCE MILE AFTER MILE Even after 3,500 miles, MICHELIN Road 5 tires stop as short as new MICHELIN Pilot® Road 4 tires thanks to evolutionary MICHELIN XST Evo sipes.1 As MICHELIN Road 5 tires wear, the siping grooves widen to allow increased water displacement. MICHELIN XST Evo siping technology offers added confidence on wet roads over a longer period of the tire’s treadlife.1

ENJOY BETTER DRY GRIP, STABILITY & HANDLING Enjoy better dry grip, improved stability and handling 2 versus MICHELIN Pilot Road 4 tires without sacrificing mileage 3 thanks to Michelin’s patented ACT+ casing technology for even more riding pleasure.5

UNLEASH YOUR FULL POTENTIAL! THE MICHELIN POWER RS TIRE REPRESENTS OUR MOST RADICAL LEAP FORWARD EVER FOR SPORTBIKE TIRES Third-party commissioned testing 6 and Michelin internal testing 7 demonstrate that MICHELIN POWER RS is the new leader in five categories that define true sportbike tire dry performance: grip, acceleration, braking, handling and flickability.

UNRIVALED GRIP AND RIDING SENSATION. NO SACRIFICE IN WET GRIP! Dual-Compound tread technology, derived from our latest generation of racing tires, offers incomparable grip, besting its predecessor by 3.5 seconds. 8 The MICHELIN POWER RS tire also improves upon the already exceptional wet grip of the MICHELIN Pilot Power 3 tire by 3 seconds. 9

elcome to Saddlemen to our Cover Sponsor program this month... it’s the top level of editorial product coverage we offer. Saddlemen is certainly not new to Parts Magazine, though, they have been with us since we started the magazine back in 1993. What’s cool about their story is not only is there a good overview of their Gel-Core Technology and extensive array of seats for all types of motorcycle riding, but we also provide a look at stunt rider Aaron Colton, a talented motorcycle rider with a connection to Saddlemen. Check it out starting on page 18.

Aaron Colton

Other newsmakers in this issue include Marvin Musquin, Aaron Plessinger, Jacob Hayes, Jared Mees, Shayna Texter and Destry Abbott. Those are just a few of the many racing competitors wearing the Parts Unlimited patch this year and even though the year is not half over yet, much has been accomplished. Our Racing Roundup starts on page 40. While Musquin ended the 2018 Supercross series 9 points behind title winner Jason Anderson, Marvin had much to be proud of with 4 wins and, despite missing a race early in the year due to injury, he stayed on Anderson’s heels all the way to the final race in Las Vegas. For Plessinger, he did get it done with a 250 West title in Supercross, as did Hayes in the Arenacross series.

Destry Abbott

Jeff Fox

Parts Unlimited is proud to have AFT stars Jared Mees and Shayna Texter on the team this year as the company joins the Flat Track sport as a series sponsor as well. And we always follow what Destry Abbott has going on. The ever-popular off-road champion continues his comeback from Leukemia, mixing dates on his calendar for motorcycle rides and races with follow up chemo treatments. What an inspiration he continues to be. Not many in our sport have his mettle. Lastly, a word of farewell to a friend of many us in the Parts Unlimited world. Sadly, as we went to press, Jeff Fox, former President of the company and son of founder Fred Fox, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly while enjoying a baseball game with family and friends at Miller Park in Milwaukee. He had retired from the company in 2007. Our condolences to the Fox family and Jeff’s many friends and associates in the industry. ■

P

arts Unlimited is pleased to welcome Adam Roth and Jamey Wills to its sales team roster.

Roth joins Parts as its new regional sales manager covering the Central Region. Wills will take the role as road sales rep covering southern Idaho. Roth got his start in the industry after crashing a pit bike and repaying the cost of the repairs by working in the parts department at a local dealership. He worked his way up from there and has spent time in various dealership departments. When he isn’t working Roth enjoys the great outdoors by training pointing dogs, bird hunting, and sporting clays. Wills has experience as an engine diagnostic and repair technician and as a sales manager at local dealerships in Idaho. Wills’ passion is riding off-road, something he’s been doing since he was 4 years old. He enjoys rocky technical trail riding and dual-sport Adventure riding. He also advocates for keeping Idaho trails open and is a member of a flying club. ■

merican Flat Track is excited to introduce Wiseco as the series’ Official Piston for the 2018 season.

Wiseco boasts a decorated motorsports pedigree, including a decades-long tradition of racing and winning in the world’s premier dirt track motorcycle racing series. It has played an important role in the history of the sport, including powering the very first of Scott Parker’s record 94 AFT Twins wins when he rode a Klotz/Wisecosponsored Harley-Davidson to victory at the Du Quoin Mile as a 17-year-old rookie in 1979. Wiseco remains a fixture to this day, sponsoring numerous title hopefuls. The announcement that Wiseco has stepped up to Official Partner status further underlines its commitment to American Flat Track racing. “Wiseco is a legendary name in American motorsports, and we are delighted to partner with such a storied brand as we

GEL-CORE TECHNOLOGY’S I N S TA N T U P G R A D E When street freestyle athlete Aaron Colton needed a seat for his Yamaha FZ-09 that could withstand the rigors of stunt riding, he and Saddlemen teamed up to design a signature seat that’s now available through Parts Unlimited.

TH E SCI EN CE

F

O F S E AT S

eeling connected to a motorcycle and to the road really comes down to just three things – hands, feet and seat. Those key body parts maintain contact with the bike, which means they are the parts absorbing every bump and vibration along the way. The seat is where the majority of a rider’s weight meets the motorcycle, and that means it is the spot where the majority of shocks and vibrations are felt. Saddlemen is dedicated to making seats that absorb those road impacts and vibrations so the rider’s body doesn’t, and it is the company’s proprietary Gel-Core Technology that is instrumental in keeping riders in the saddle longer without the fatigue and discomfort associated with their stock seats. Saddlemen has built a reputation among V-twin dealers and riders as a premium solution for comfort, but the company has a complete range of seat designs to fit everything from Adventure bikes to sportbikes. Competitive riders also use Saddlemen seats, be they flat-trackers or professional street freestyle riders like Aaron Colton. Saddlemen seats mount just like stock seats, so swapping an OE foam seat for a Saddlemen model with Gel-Core Technology is one of the easiest ways to increase comfort and enhance the enjoyment of your motorcycle. Think of it as a performance upgrade for both bike and rider. Saddlemen CEO David Echert defines comfort as how long a rider can be in the seat. And for him and the team at Saddlemen, that comes down to the numbers. The company’s Gel-Core Technology lets riders stay on the road up to 400 percent longer, with 92 percent less road shock and 50 percent less road vibration compared to stock seats that only use foam.

The nature of Gel-Core Technology allows each Saddlemen seat to conform to the body sitting on it, which helps to reduce pressure points and eliminate hot spots. In fancy terms, the seat is topographically neutral. Saddlemen achieves that neutrality for each seat design by experimenting with different tensions across the backrests and seats to determine the ultimate distribution pattern for the foam and gel.

SADDLEMEN

Gel-Core Technology is engineered to dampen, divert and deflect energy from the road, and it does so with co-molding technology, which is Saddlemen’s proprietary process of combining comfort foam, progressive density foam and SaddleGel into a single molded component.

THE SCIENCE OF SEATS

CO V E R

S TO R Y

The experimenting goes beyond the seat design at Saddlemen, where chemists are actually on staff to oversee the gel’s unique makeup and production in-house at Saddlemen’s headquarters in Rancho Dominguez, CA. As the team at Saddlemen puts it, Gel-Core Technology is a scientific approach to motorcycle seats. SaddleGel is what is at the heart of Gel-Core Technology and the reason chemists are on hand. Officially known as a specially formulated viscoelastic polymer, Saddlemen has, thankfully, given it the much simpler name of SaddleGel. The dampening and vibration diversion in a Saddlemen seat comes primarily from the SaddleGel, which has enough elasticity to conform to a rider’s body while still providing support. The result is reduced pressure points and better circulation, even on long rides. Although Saddlemen believes a rider deserves better than a simple foam seat, foam is still an important element in creating a comfortable, cushioned ride. Saddlemen seats utilize ProFoam, a progressive density foam that provides a carefully tuned balance between support and compliance.

The foam is made up of varied cell sizes and types, all held in place by a skin that resists outside elements and seals the foam from water. The foam is not finished until the density and shape have been honed in for an ideal support structure. In all, Saddlemen’s co-molding technology can be broken down into three layers. The top sculpted layer of foam is closest to the rider’s body, providing shape, cushioning and a soft touch. Beneath that, the SaddleGel absorbs vibrations and shocks from the bike below while dispersing pressure and promoting blood flow above. Beneath those two layers, a polyurethane substructure provides the foundation and support for the entire seat. SWITCHBACKS, SPORTBIKES AND SADDLEMEN Saddlemen has a dedicated team of designers and technicians on staff, but from time to time an expert comes in to lend a hand. When it comes to the Performance Gripper seat, that expert is Aaron Colton. Part showman, part ambassador and all kinds of talented on a motorcycle, Colton is best known as a street freestyle athlete.

Your sportbike-riding customers can improve the comfort and performance of their seats by upgrading to a Track LS or Track CF seat. Both fit the Yamaha FZ-09 and MT-09, as well as a host of other models.

Saddlemen developed the proprietary formula for its SaddleGel in-house. The company also manufactures each gel insert at its headquarters in Rancho Dominguez, CA.

Many sportbike riders seem to think that being uncomfortable is the price to pay for performance, but Saddlemen assures that this is not the case.

The Track LS and Track CF won’t sacrifice the aesthetic lines of a sportbike seat to achieve improvements in comfort and control. The unique design has a split piece of SaddleGel and a channel in the base that leaves the middle of the seat open so that circulation is unobstructed and there are fewer pressure points. As the name of the seat implies, it can be used on the track just as easily as on a twisty road or even for a daily commute.

SADDLEMEN

SaddleGel and Gel-Core Technology allows each Saddlemen seat to conform to the body sitting on it, which helps to reduce pressure points and eliminate hot spots.

Riders who are interested in comfort and performance can opt for the Track LS or Track CF seat. Both fit the Yamaha FZ09 and MT-09, as well as a host of other models from BMW, Ducati, Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Triumph, and Yamaha.

The Track LS has fine Italian leather sitting atop the Gel-Core Technology for extra style points. Meanwhile, the Track CF is wrapped in Carbon Fiber Saddlehyde, which is a high-tech, carbon fiber-look cover featuring the same center channel strip. Both finishes provide a blend of looks, comfort and durability, and they come with rear seat covers. Even the texture of the seat has sportbike riders in mind, as it is smooth enough to allow easy movement when riding aggressively. Underneath, a hand-laid, rigid fiberglass platform ensures that the Track seat fits snugly against the bike frame. Like all Saddlemen seats, the Track LS and Track CF are easy to install and made in the USA. Saddlemen has a full range of Gel Channel sportbike seats like the Track LS and Track CF. The seats in the Gel Channel line feature the split SaddleGel design for ultimate comfort – the lineup include the Sport, Tech, Chicane and Low-Profile options in addition to Track LS and Track CF.

His résumé includes AMA Pro Road Racing, AMA Pro Flat Track, WORCS off-road racing, Supermoto and motocross, so he has a whole lot of talent in a whole lot of disciplines. Colton is a longtime friend of the team at Saddlemen, so when he needed a freestyle-specific seat for his Yamaha FZ-09, he knew exactly who could help. Freestyle athletes put their seats under a lot of strain, usually balancing on it with every body part except the one that the seat was designed for. His signature Saddlemen seat is designed to enhance and help control his FZ-09, with a contoured shape that assists with executing stunts as well as an extra-grippy surface on all of the critical points. Of course, many FZ-09 riders probably aren’t looking for the freestyle attributes of the Performance Gripper. They simply want a seat that is more comfortable and allows longer rides. A lot of sportbike riders seem to think that being uncomfortable is the price you must pay for performance, but Saddlemen assures that is not the case.

All of the seats have performance-oriented designs with lines and materials that match the characteristics of the motorcycle for which they are designed. Check the Parts Unlimited Street catalog for a full list of the Gel Channel sportbike seats and applications. Saddlemen has been in business since 1987, celebrating its 30th anniversary last year. The company specializes in seats, of course, as well as motorcycle luggage and accessories, and all of it is designed with the goal of improving the riding experience for everyone on two wheels. Parts Unlimited carries a full line of Saddlemen products. Full seats, heated seats, Saddle Skins replacement seat covers, rain covers, repair kits, gel insert pads and seat heating systems are among the many seating options available through Parts Unlimited. Luggage options include a full array of saddlebags, tail bags, tool bags, adventure packs, sportbike luggage, and even a carrier for small pets. ■

BOLT KITS

Ready for Repairs

Off-Road Bolt and Hardware Kits

For dealers and their customers, having the correct bolts on hand is essential for any rebuild or repair of a dirtbike or ATV. Moose Racing has a solution with its broad range M1 bolt kits.

P

utting together a powersports vehicle properly means having all of the correct parts, right down to the bolts. To make sure builds – and rebuilds – of off-road bikes and ATVs are as easy as possible, Moose Racing has recently introduced a long list of new M1 bolt and hardware kits. Ranging from more general applications, like metric and ATV, to model-specific kits, Moose Racing makes sure dealers and customers can get vehicles buttoned up and ready to go with ease. The kits ensure that no matter where the bike is being worked on, whether it is at the dealership, in a garage or at the track, the right part will be on hand. The M1 424 metric bolt kit (p/n 2401-1002) is a great kit for riders who have multiple brands of bikes. It is also a valuable tool for dealers who carry or service multiple brands of off-road bikes. As the name implies, the kit includes approximately 424 parts, including bolts, nuts, factory hardware and other bits. The kit fits all full-size late-model Japanese motocross and off-road motorcycles from 2000 to current, making it extremely versatile.

For Honda 125 to 450 CR/CRF models from 2000 to current, the M1 CR/CRF bolt kit (p/n 2401-1005) has factory-style replacements for easy swapping. Many of the parts in the kit will fit other Honda dirt bikes, too. The comprehensive kit includes rotor bolts, shroud bolts, seat bolts, sub-frame bolts, fork guard bolts, factory hardware, aluminum bushings, aluminum rim-lock spacers, sprocket bolts, Fuji nuts, various washers, valve stem parts, hex-head bolts, and more. Kawasaki riders on 2003 to current KX/KXF models will benefit from the M1 KX/KXF bolt kit (p/n 2401-1004). Like the CR/CRF kit, the KX/KXF kit has a lot of parts that will also fit other Kawasaki dirt bikes. At 205 pieces, the KX/KXF bolt kit is the largest modelspecific kit that Moose Racing offers. The array of parts includes factory style hex flange bolts with captured washers, hex head flange bolts, shroud bolts, seat bolts, sub-frame bolts, fork guard bolts, rotor bolts, sprocket bolts, factory hardware, rim lock spacers, valve stem parts, chain guide parts, Fuji lock nuts, various washers, and an axle nut.

MOOSE RACING

In addition to the big line of bolt kits, Moose Racing also offers model-specific hardware kits for both European and Japanese dirtbikes.

A Suzuki solution from Moose Racing is the M1 RM/RMZ bolt kit (p/n 2401-1006) for 2000 and newer RM/RMZ 125-450 models. The crossover possibilities include other Suzuki dirt bikes, older models and DRs. The kit comes with more than 178 pieces of hardware, including shroud bolts, seat bolts, sub-frame bolts, fork guard bolts, rotor bolts, sprocket bolts, T-nuts, aluminum bushings, rim lock spacers, valve stem parts, Fuji lock nuts, replacement bolts and various washers. The versatile M1 YZ/YZF/WR bolt kit (p/n 2401-1003) was developed by Moose Racing for 2003-2018 Yamaha YZ/YZF/WR 125-450 models, but it also crosses over to older Yamaha dirtbike models. The kit is one of the most extensive in Moose Racing’s M1 bolt kit line, with 200 pieces that encompass several hardware pieces, sprocket bolts, rotor bolts, valve stem parts, Fuji lock nuts, replacement bolts, various washers, and more. Another extremely versatile kit is the M1 Euro bolt kit (p/n 2401-1007). Moose Racing developed the kit for 125-500 KTM models, but it turns out that the kit is also ideal for many Husqvarna, Husaberg, Beta and GasGas models. The kit is comprised of 170 pieces, including factory style KTM hardware, bolts, aluminum washers and concave washers. In addition, the kit has a collection of dimpled flange bolts, carb screws, body screws, sprocket bolts, clips, valve stem parts, and more.

ATV riders have not been forgotten. Moose Racing developed the M1 ATV bolt kit (p/n 2401-1008) to work with most ATVs. Hundreds of pieces are included in the kit, and some tools are even included for added convenience, such as for hex/allen bolts. Nuts of multiple sizes and types, flat washers, lock washers and two sizes of plastic rivets for fenders are also a part of the kit. In short, the M1 ATV bolt kit can handle most repairs for most ATVs, making it a valuable resource for both dealers and riders. Moose Racing also has M1 hardware kits available for specific applications, with hard-to-find washers, spacers and other miscellaneous hardware pieces that are specific to a brand. The hardware kits make a nice addition to a toolbox, especially for racers who need to have every essential on hand, right down to the last washer. The M1 hardware kits include versions for CF/CRF models (p/n 2401-1010), Euro models (p/n 2401-1009), RM/RMZ models (p/n 24011011) and YZ/YZF models (p/n 2401-1012). ■

TIRES

Two for the Road

The Road 5 and the Power RS The Power RS from Michelin provides super-strong grip during fast cornering, hard acceleration and heavy braking, in addition to a light, agile feel and high-speed stability.

hen it comes to your customers’ riding styles, whether it’s the pure-sport camp or those commuters and recreational riders who do an occasional track day, Michelin has a tire that fits the bill. With the Michelin Road 5 and the Power RS, Michelin has two tire options for both types of riding.

Power RS For race-level performance, there’s the Power RS. These tires look to be straight ahead barely-street-legal race rubber and that assessment isn’t far off the mark. The Power RS was designed to meet the needs of hypersport riders, and provide superb traction in the wet. The design goal here was a super-strong grip during fast cornering, hard acceleration and heavy braking, in

addition to a light, agile feel, high-speed stability and that almost un-definable sense of precise sportbike handling Michelin calls flickability. Michelin even calls the Power RS a “perfect sport tire.” Its near-slick/variable-groove tread pattern is matched with all-new Styrene Butadine Rubber (SBR) multi-compounds. The carcass construction includes Michelin’s ACT+ Adaptive Casing Technology for enhanced straight-line stability coupled with minimal drifting in the curves. Put it all together with a super-sticky 100 percent Carbon Black 2CT and 2CT+ multi-compounding, short-groove/ semi-slick tread patterns tilted heavily towards dryweather performance, and the Power RS offers all the performance and more that pure-sport riders demand.

MICHELIN

Michelin’s Road 5 tires are designed and engineered to give riders plenty of performance in a range of riding conditions. They’re the newest high-level offering for sport-touring riders.

Road 5 When the riding also includes plenty of everyday riding in all-weather conditions and some extended road trips, the Road 5 is a strong choice. These are the Michelins designed to provide that maximum feel of confidence during spirited riding, and deliver in wet and dry conditions, for mile after long mile. The Road 5 is Michelin’s newest high-level offering designed for your sport-touring customers. These are tires designed and engineered to give riders plenty of performance in a range of riding conditions. It’s a lot to ask of a tire but the Road 5 comes with a lot to offer. For starters the Road 5 features that same high-end technology seen in the Power RS – the ACT+ casing technology and the Dual Compounding, 2CT and 2CT+ compounds that strike an optimum balance of grip, cornering power, stability and handling feel.

With the new XST Evo technology, grooves of that siping actually become wider as the tire wears. As the miles roll up water displacement increases so there’s no loss in design efficiency. With the Road 5, riders get the feeling of confidence on wet roads, on dry surfaces and it’s there for the full, and long, life of the tire. Whether your customers are ripping lap-after-lap down at the track, or are just riders putting their motorcycles to everyday use in varied conditions, Michelin has a tire that will do the job. ■

More UTV Power

New Vehicles, New Exhausts

E

very new side-by-side model means a new opportunity to give a vehicle more power and performance. And, of course, an aftermarket exhaust is a big part of that process.

Trinity Racing’s exhaust offerings are continuing to expand with the recent addition of full and slip-on systems for the newest UTVs from Polaris. Now customers have more exhaust options for the Polaris Ace 900 as well as the RZR XP Turbo S. The exhaust systems for the 2017-2018 Polaris Ace 900 are brand-new from Trinity Racing. The exhaust is available as a slip-on and a full system, and the finish options for the dual mufflers are brushed aluminum or black.

The full exhaust for the Ace 900 is a stage 5 system with stainless steel headers, and everything is fully TIG welded for a premium finish and durability. The canisters are constructed of lightweight 6061 aluminum, with fiberglass and stainless steel wool-wrapped baffles. Billet aluminum brackets and end caps top off the combination. Both the full system and the slip-on arrive with installation instructions and any required mounting hardware. Similarly, Parts Unlimited is also stocking Trinity Racing’s exhaust options for the 2018 Polaris RZR XP Turbo S. The slip-ons and full systems come in three finish options, including brushed aluminum, black and Cerakote. Cerakote is a high-temperature ceramic coating that not only creates an effective thermal barrier, but also has a unique finish. The stage 5 system for the full Turbo S exhaust is designed for even better performance and sound. The mid and head pipes are constructed of 304 brushed stainless steel, while the dual mufflers, brackets and exhaust tips are aluminum. The full system offers significant horsepower and torque gains. In addition to exhausts, Trinity Racing also offers tuners specifically designed to dial in the company’s exhaust systems. The Ace 900 Pro Tuner for the stage 5 exhaust arrives pre-programmed for the Trinity Racing setup, and also offers on-the-fly fuel tuning.

Trinity Racing now has slip-ons and full-system exhausts for the 2017-2018 Polaris Ace 900. They are designed for tough use and to provide a nice boost in torque and horsepower.

Cool Armor

A Mesh Jacket with Benefits

T

here are a lot of motorcycle purists who turn up their noses at the idea of a mesh jacket, calling them too frail to be effective. Leave it to Icon to challenge the unbelievers by introducing a mesh jacket made of a durable textile chassis and fitted with a full complement of D3O impact protectors. Designed for even the most aggressive riding stance, the Mesh AF is made to the specs of Icon’s Attack Fit. It has pre-curved arms for a contoured fit that is aerodynamic and comfortable at speed, even in a tucked position The large front and rear panels are all mesh, so air flows freely even on the hottest of days. The material that comprises the mesh is a tough textile that offers a barrier between the rider and the rest of the world without being stifling.

Icon’s Mesh AF jacket provides maximum air flow.

Icon calls it Iron Weave Mesh, and the material is lightweight yet incredibly resilient. The shoulders, elbows and other key areas are constructed of a solid textile fabric to increase the durability in heavy-wear zones. Inside, the Mesh AF houses D3O impact protectors in the shoulders, elbows and back. D3O is the result of unique technology that provides protection in a versatile, flexible material. The shock absorption and impact protection values are high, but the profile of each armor piece is low, allowing the armor to do its job without being bulky. In addition, adjustable wind straps on the arms allow the rider to customize the jacket for an even more streamlined fit. Adjustable snaps at the waist, zippers at the wrist and a low-profile collar and cuffs keep the Mesh AF comfortable and easy to slip into. The Mesh AF jacket has toned-down style cues for a clean look, and the two external zippered pockets are conveniently placed without blocking the mesh paneling. The Mesh AF jacket comes in black, gray (with dayglow yellow reflective trim) and white. The sizing runs from a men’s Small up to 3XL. Reflective accents on each of the three colorways make the jacket more visible to other traffic on the road, although it is only the trim on the gray jacket that practically glows in the dark. ■

he current generation of 4-stroke dirtbikes deserves the latest upgrades. Hot Cams has just released some new camshafts for three of the most popular models, the 2016-2018 KTM 250 SX-F/XC-F, the 2016-2018 Husqvarna FC 250 and the 2017-2018 Yamaha YZ 250F.

Hot Cams now has a Stage 1 and Stage 2 intake and exhaust cam options for a range of popular dirtbikes from KTM, Husqvarna and Yamaha.

Offering both Stage 1 and Stage 2 intake and exhaust cam options, these camshafts have been engineered as drop-in replacements utilizing the stock valve springs, and they’ll add up to a 10 percent gain in power. The KTM and Husqvarna cams are available in Stage 1 and Stage 2 intake configurations that pair perfectly with a single exhaust cam that’s sold separately. The Stage 1 intake cam builds power over and above OE, with gains all the way to 11,000 rpm. The Stage 2 intake is the top-end powerhouse, equal to stock up to 8,200 rpm, and then gaining all the way to the rev-limiter. With Hot Cams riders can make their own choice here, Stage 1 for low-and mid-range power gains and Stage 2 for pure top-end power. For those customers looking for an upgrade for that new Yamaha YZ250F, Hot Cams has Stage 1 and Stage 2 performance cams available. The Stage 1 cams develop a strong bottom-end and mid-range power increase with only a slight decrease above 10,800 rpm. Hot Cam’s Stage 2 camshafts are engineered to boost top-end performance on these machines. In-house dyno testing showed no bottom-end loss and great gains from 9,200 rpm to the redline. Both intake and exhaust cams use the stock valve springs and the exhaust cams feature an auto-decompression mechanism.

Four-Wheel Fun Making a Better RZR 4

A straight up bolt-on upgrade, Bassani’s new performance muffler for Polaris’ RZR side-by-sides adds a boost of up to 6 percent more horsepower over stock.

T

he Polaris RZR has been a major player in the recreational side-by-side market for a while now. In fact, the four-seat versions of these vehicles have really taken off in popularity, and for good reason.

That power-building, great-sounding muffler maintains the OE Polaris sound level at idle, too, increasing just 1 to 2 dba over stock at 3,000 rpm. It’s easy on the ears, comfortable to live with. And with a signature-Bassani heatshield included all this comes with some added style.

Sacrificing nothing in the power, handling, tracking and fun departments to the two-seater models, the RZR four seaters provide all the room an off-road/dune-busting enthusiast needs to share that passion and lifestyle with friends and families. With the RZR 4 everyone gets to come along for the ride.

An easy bolt-on replacement, the Bassani performance muffler utilizes the stock RZR mounting system, and its formed flange fits the stock Polaris gasket. The muffler’s contour shape uses all the stock springs and bolts, as well.

Like all the Polaris side-by-sides the RZR 4s were factorydesigned with accessories in mind. From bumpers and roof panels to rock sliders, nerf bars and plenty more there’s a lot a driver can add to an RZR to make it better and make it his own. Bassani has just added one more important item to that list, a performance replacement muffler and it’s good for up to 6 percent more horsepower at the wheels. That new Bassani gives the RZR an improved and much deeper, throatier tone, too, an exhaust note that says performance in no uncertain terms.

Constructed entirely from stainless steel the muffler is not only good-looking, good sounding and a great performer, it’s also off-road tough. Bassani also fit an 18mm O2 bung in the inlet pipe and included a 12mm reducer bushing to accommodate the installation of both stock replacement sensors and aftermarket tuning devices. There’s more good news. That Bassani performance replacement muffler is also an exact fit on the two-seat versions of the RZR 1000 and Turbo. Four-seaters might be all the rage now, but Bassani hasn’t left any RZR rider out in the cold. ■

arts Unlimited has a long history of sponsoring and supporting the sport. For 2018 it has spread that support across a wide range of riders, races and series at all different levels and in all types of disciplines.

Knowing that spectating is as important as the action out on the track or trail, Parts also takes care of its dealers by giving them the VIP treatment at races across the country, including for the 2018 MotoAmerica season. The company was sure to be on hand with its dealer hospitality suite at the combined MotoAmerica Motul Superbike Championship and MotoGP Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas at the Circuit of The Americas in Texas. “Last year we enjoyed our first season back in the MotoAmerica paddock,” said Hylton Beattie, Parts Unlimited global motorsports director. “We like where the series is headed and the progress they have made, and want to continue to be a part of their growth. Thor’s Marvin Musquin came close to winning the Supercross championship, but landed a few points short. Riding healthy now, he is one to watch in the Motocross Nationals.

SUPERCROSS Thor/KTM rider Marvin Musquin

RACE ROUNDUP

The 2018 Supercross Series was a real dogfight all season long between Thor/KTM rider Marvin Musquin, Jason Anderson and Eli Tomac. Anderson eventually took the championship, with Musquin as runner-up followed by Tomac. This championship is historic, not only for the fact that it was Anderson’s first, but it was a first premier class Supercross Championship for Husqvarna. The record shows Husqvarna won the 500cc Supercross class in 1974 with Gary Semics, but historically that class is now looked upon as a support class to the Premier class, which is now called the Supercross class. So, this was indeed the first Premier Supercross class championship for Husky. Anderson was a model of consistency in 2018, with 11 podiums in 17 rounds to clinch his first AMA Supercross Championship. But Musquin and Tomac didn’t make it easy for Anderson. Anderson won four events, so did Musquin, Tomac won eight, but had some bad luck in the races he didn’t win. Musquin got hurt early in the season and had to miss a race, but he fought back to form, and the podium, to come

within a few points of the title behind Anderson. There was some controversy between Musquin and Tomac during the season as the two traded paint often and some fines were paid as a result.

But the racing, while aggressive, was certainly fun to watch as the title came down to the last race between Anderson and Musquin, with the Thor/KTM rider having a mathematical chance if Anderson had a bad race. Musquin did all he could and battled Tomac during the final in Vegas, but in the end had to settle for second place in the race and the title chase. ”We started the championship on the right foot with a win, but unfortunately I got injured at the second round and missed a race,” Musquin said. “After that it was all about healing as quickly as possible to come back to the top, and we were able to get back on the podium for quite a few rounds and eventually grabbed three more wins. “By the end of the championship we were back to 100 percent and fighting for the win every weekend. We came up short of nine points for the title, but second place was still a great performance.”

250SX West Champion, Thor/Yamaha’s Aaron Plessinger There was even better news in the 250SX West class as Thor/Yamaha rider Aaron Plessinger took his first 250SX West title of his career. Plessinger stacked up several wins and podiums during the season to take the title with 211 points over Adam Cianciarulo’s 209. Shane McEllrath took third in the chase with 193. Plessinger is the son of multi-time GNCC Champion Scott Plessinger, and is particularly fast on rough tracks, thanks to his off-road roots as an amateur youth GNCC Champion. Plessinger is also a top contender in the outdoor Motocross Nationals and will be a rider to watch this motocross season. “We couldn’t be happier for the Monster Energy Star Yamaha powerhouse team, and the New West Coast 250 Champion Aaron Plessinger on their successful accomplishments of adding another championship to this premier 250 team,” said Andy Gustafson, Thor pro rider support manager. “Aaron is not only a top professional athlete, but a true outstanding human that Thor is proud to back and support and be able to be a part of his accomplishments.”

Thor’s Aaron Plessinger earned his first Supercross title by winning the 250 SX West Championship. Now he has his sights set on the Motocross Nationals.

Multi-time Loretta Lynn’s Champion Hayes’ entry into the pro ranks has not been an easy one. After not being signed in 2014, companies in his hometown of Greensboro, NC came together to help send Jacob into the professional ranks. He joined Team Babbitt’s in 2015 with a long list of accomplishments, and hoped to transition those into a successful AMSOIL Arenacross season. It happened this season as Hayes put Moose Racing on the top of the podium as he was crowned a first-time 2018 AMSOIL Arenacross Champion. It was a task that was settled in the season finale. Hayes had to beat Chris Blose for the title. He took on the event with enthusiasm, and Hayes went 2-1 for the night and the Arenacross title.

AMERICAN FLAT TRACK Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties are on the ground floor of the resurgence of American Flat Track racing as series sponsors and backers of two standout riders in the twins and singles classes. American Flat Track (AFT) has been reenvisioned, re-branded and re-focused over the last few years, with exciting new classes, updated race formats, new manufacturers, a significant TV broadcasting deal with NBC Sports, and new high-end race venues. Ticket sales have doubled. Broadcast viewership on NBCSN shot to nearly 2 million total viewers, with more than a million and a half total households tuning in, and on two occasions AFT was the top-rated show of the day. Live stream viewers on fanschoice.tv increased dramatically as well, with a quarter million unique viewers, nearly 400,000 total viewed hours, and an average stream time of 90 minutes.

AFT is thriving with new interest from fans, brands and enthusiasts all over the country. Multiple brands for AFT Twins and AFT Singles classes now fill the grid with Triumph, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, Honda, Ducati, KTM, and Husqvarna joining the Harley-Davidsons and Indians in the paddock.

Parts/Drag Specialties Jared Mees AFT Champion Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited recently added AFT Champion Jared Mees to their stable of great racers. Mees is a fivetime Grand National Champion, X-Games Gold Medalists, 2017 Cycle News Rider of the Year, 2017 AFT Champion and a twotime Daytona TT winner. So far this season Mees has been almost perfect, taking five victories in the premier AFT Twins class out of the six races run thus far. With 35 career wins and counting, Mees is tough to beat on any track. He already holds a substantial points lead of 125 over 89 from his nearest competitor.

Jared Mees blasted through the 2017 AFT series like a machine, and now the reigning Grand National Champion is racing his way through the current season with multiple wins and a shot of retaining his title. Photos by Dave Hoenig

The Diablo Rosso Corsa II Purpose Built for Street and Track

T

he Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa II is the latest addition to the fabled Diablo family, and it’s built to satisfy super-sport streetbike riders looking for a great all-around tire.

The result is the Rosso Corsa II, Pirelli’s first multicompound street tire that uses two compounds, applied in three zones, across the front tire, and three compounds, applied in five zones, on the rear.

With the Rosso Corsa II there is consistent performance with excellent grip, feel and control in all conditions during day-to-day use while getting good mileage. In addition to that everyday use, the Rosso Corsa II is equally adept when those track days roll around.

It all adds up to an ideal compound combination in a pair of tires designed to deliver excellent grip under all conditions and at all lean angles. With the Rosso Corsa II there’s a real sense of control both on the road and on the track, in both wet and dry conditions.

Pirelli’s Diablo Rosso Corsas have been around for a while and many riders know the name and how they perform. Since that 2010 launch, though, a lot has changed in the motorcycle world.

The Rosso Corsa II also has new, innovative tire profiles front and rear, as well as new slick-shouldered tread patterns. The carcass structure and tread design

The Diablo Rosso Corsa II is purpose-built to provide excellent grip, feel and mileage for today’s modern sportbikes, both on the track and on the street.

Sportbikes have more power now and ultra-sophisticated suspension and braking systems that allow riders to push things a lot harder than thought possible just a few years ago. And that’s where the Diablo Rosso Corsa II comes in. These tires were designed especially to let riders take full advantage of everything today’s motorcycles have to offer, both on the street and on the track. Striking a comfortable middle ground between a sportoriented street tire and some pure-race rubber, the Rosso Corsa II borrows from Pirelli’s 15-year history as Official Tire Supplier to the FIM Superbike World Championship to merge street and track technologies into one tire.

Economical Upgrades

Longer Life from a Non-Sealed Chain

K

nown worldwide for its high performance sealed chains, RK Chain also has a series of non-sealed, economical grade chains available in both standard and heavy duty. RK’s non-sealed chains have been original equipment for Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha for decades. These relationships have helped develop stronger and longer lasting non-sealed chains for use in many applications. RK non-sealed chains are perfect for lowdisplacement motorcycles that did not come from the factory with sealed chains. If the motorcycle came from the factory with a sealed chain, then RK recommends always replacing it with a sealed chain.

In this chart, two of the same chains are tested on the same machine. One 428H chain features the updates and the other 428H chain does not. The results show that the 428H chain that was updated has a reduced elongation rate that results in the chain performing better and wearing longer compared to the chain that does not feature the updates. Elongation is the process of internal components wearing away with normal use that can be measured as additional chain length.

RK Chain made several running changes to its non-sealed chain series. One of the most important changes was the addition of the fourside (Quad) rivet staked pins. When pins are quad riveted they are stronger and more stabilized, which results in increased stress resistance from high engine loads. This also makes the transmission of horsepower to the ground more efficient.

The second most important change was the addition of solid bushings. In between the bushing and the pin is the factory injected grease, which acts as a lubricant and as a cushion to protect the pin from rubbing against the bushing. When bushings are solid there is no lateral exit for the grease to escape, unlike with curled bushings that have a gap. When the internal grease escapes or is contaminated the chain-wear life can be greatly reduced. RK’s solid

50

PARTS MAGAZINE

J U LY 2 0 1 8

bushings are constructed by a process called Cold Forging, which strengthens the metal component of the bushing, thus resulting in a stronger, more rigid chain. As a result of these changes, as well as the application of RK’s new specially formulated coating, RK non-sealed chains now show a 40 percent increase in chain life. RK non-sealed chains offer riders quality at a fraction of the price, and are available in 415, 420, 428, 520, 525, and 530 pitches and come in both standard and heavy duty. When choosing RK non-sealed chains, always make sure the RK chain chosen has a suitable CC rating for the motorcycle. ■

TIME TO CHANGE YOUR CHAIN? Failure to address the warning signs shown on this page can result in reduced chain life and/or can cause a very dangerous situation. RK recommends that you inspect your chain prior to each ride and follow proper chain maintenance procedures to get the longest life out of your chain. MAINTENANCE: All Chains require maintenance and lubrication. For off-road use, clean and lube the chain after every ride. For street chains, clean and lube the chain every 200 miles for non-sealed chains and 300 miles for sealed chains. Clean the chain with a mineral oil based cleaner and a soft cloth to remove excess dirt and grit. Do not use any cleaner that contains acid, caustic chemicals or brake cleaner to maintain your chain. Do not use coarse brushes to clean your chain as they could damage the rubber seals. Avoid steam cleaning and high pressure water on both sealed and non-sealed chains. These actions can contaminate the internal lubricant which can cause premature chain wear. LUBRICATION: Keeping your chain clean and generously lubricated with a quality chain lube will ensure the long life and performance of the chain. If the chain has seals, be sure to use an O-Ring safe chain lubricant.

SEVERE Cracks

Cracks can be caused by age or too much load. If you see any cracks, stop riding immediately and replace the chain. Continuing to ride on a chain with cracks can be very dangerous!

URGENT CRITICAL Missing or Damaged Seals

Using improper cleaning chemicals and/or use of improper cleaning tools can result in the installed seals being damaged. Chain wear life will be reduced, stop riding and replace the chain immediately.

CRITICAL Pin Rotation

RK’s quad-staked pins should look square when looking at the chain. Rotated pins are a sign of worn pins and bushings. If some pins have rotated with points facing up, replace the chain immediately.

SERIOUS Wear Marks

When the side plates on the top and bottom show worn flat spots, replace the chain as soon as possible. Flat spots indicate the wearing away of metal and chain strength has been reduced.

CAUTION Kinks

As chains age they can become stiff and kinked. This can occur from not properly maintaining the chain. Kinks will prevent the chain from moving normally. Replace the chain as soon as possible.

ALERT

Chain Flotation

If the chain can be pulled away from the rear sprocket, it is a sign of elongation. Elongation occurs as chains age and the internal pins wear. The chain should be replaced soon.

ATTENTION

Rust Contact your Parts Unlimited sales representative today!

Chains that show signs of rust indicate improper maintenance and/or neglect. Rust will prevent normal chain movement and will reduce the life of the chain. Clean and lube your chain immediately.

NOTICE Dirt and Debris www.RKExcelAmerica.com

Chains that are allowed to accumulate excess amounts of dirt and debris will have a reduced wearlife. Follow proper chain cleaning procedures. Clean and lube the chain every 300 miles. Don’t allow dirt to build up.

Music for Metrics

Universal Handlebar Audio Kit be easily mounted to ATVs, UTVs, golf carts and other vehicles that might need some amped-up sound. The MA4-BT has two custom speaker pods that each house dual two-inch speakers. The dual speaker design keeps the speakers from being too big, while still allowing clear, high-volume sound that will not get drowned out by road noise. For riders who want to integrate their other onthe-go gadgets, an additional wired auxiliary input allows the addition of a GPS or satellite radio so that all audio output is channeled through the MA4-BT. The amp/controller also has a highlevel audio output, which gives the ability to run external amplifiers and more speakers with ease.

The MA4-BT universal kit from Metrix Audio lets riders add music, radio and GPS instructions to a number of powersports vehicles, everything from motorcycles to UTVs.

W

hen the popularity of metric cruisers began to soar, Parts Unlimited knew that there would be a big demand for audio systems that fit them. The company turned to Hogtunes with the request for a universal handlebar audio system that could fit any and all metric applications. Since Hogtunes caters primarily to the Harley-Davidson market, it was decided that a separate, sister entity was needed for the new universal audio system. Metrix Audio was born. After the first handlebar system was introduced, Metrix Audio expanded to include speakers for specific applications and, now, handlebar kits designed to fit specific models and even aftermarket fairings.

The main components of the MA4-BT are easily adaptable for custom installations, further solidifying the kit’s status as a truly universal audio solution. The kit can stand up to the elements, too, since it is completely waterproof. Metrix Audio speakers have a 5-year warranty period from the original purchase date for the original owner. The company’s amplifiers have a 3-year warranty. In addition to the MA4-BT, Parts Unlimited carries additional Metrix Audio options, like the KVR speaker power kit and front speakers designed to fit the Kawasaki Vaquero and Voyager. ■

A primary staple from the ODI brand is its V2 Lock-On MX half-waffle grips. For 2018, the Lock-On package includes an ODI V2 throttle tube and five of the most popular throttle Snap-cams for current 2-stroke and 4- stroke motocross and off-road bikes. ODI molds these grips in-house in its Southern California facility. This year they have expanded into seven colorways, including soft compound Gray and Pro-White. A few years back, ODI teamed up with five-time AMA National and Supercross champion Jeff Emig to develop the Emig line of ODI Lock-On grips. Emig designed the grips, which are available in a wide variety of colors, and they are developed and manufactured in-house at ODI’s headquarters here in the U.S. The Emig Racing V2 Lock-On grips are ODI’s original motocross signature grip designed by Emig. The mediumdiameter knurled pattern has a special half-waffle pattern with thumb relief. This Emig collaboration has proven extremely successful.

The Podium FLIGHT handlebar was developed to be non-braced, designed to provide more flex at a more affordable cost.

In the handlebar category, ODI’s line of Podium motocross handlebars has a proprietary tubing profile built with a seamless, double-butted, 2014-T6 alloy that has been shot-peened for added strength, as proven in testing by top Supercross and motocross racers. Available in two versions, the CFT Podium MX handlebars feature the company’s patented CFT crossbar system. The CFT crossbar has a built-in elastomer, allowing the handlebar to flex at a controlled rate.

This allows the handlebars to dampen forces to the body and reduce rider fatigue. The Podium FLIGHT was developed to be non-braced, designed to provide more flex at a more affordable cost. For both handlebar models, the left side is lightly knurled to help with grip adhesion for riders using standard slipon style grips. Each is hard anodized and feature laser etching with two-toned ODI graphics. ODI handlebars come with an injection-molded, high-density ODI foam bar pad. Multiple bend options are available. OEM Quality, High Value

Direct Replacement Parts for Polaris

W

hile plenty of UTV riders look for OEM quality when it is time to purchase replacement parts, few want to pay OEM prices. For Polaris vehicle owners, Moose Utility Division offers the best of both worlds – direct OEM replacement parts without the price tag.

Polaris owners can get the same quality (or in some cases, better quality) as stock and can enjoy significant savings offered by the Moose Utility Division version of the parts. That parts list includes an array of items, such as fuel pumps, ignition switches, sprague carriers and thermostats. Moose Utility Division’s range of Polaris fuel pumps includes versions for both EFI and carbureted models. The pumps are direct replacements to make the swap easy, and the fuel flow rate is the same as stock so no additional engine tuning is necessary. The EFI pumps come ready to install with an included pick-up screen for filtration. The range of available OEM-replacement ignition switches is wide, with options in stock for most 1996 to current Polaris models. Each replacement ignition switch comes with a mounting nut and two keys. The Moose Utility Division version is an affordable option and an easy swap, whether a customer is replacing a broken switch or replacing lost keys. The Polaris thermostats from Moose Utility Division are also direct OEM replacements, and they are available for most ATV and UTV models under the Polaris banner. The thermostats open and close at the OEM temperature, and some applications include the sealing gasket needed for installation. Instead of being a direct replacement, Moose Utility Division’s sprague carrier with clips and rollers is an upgrade over the OEM version. The sturdy 6061 billet aluminum part provides better strength and longevity than the stock plastic carrier, making it a practical and affordable swap. Each carrier includes spring clips and rollers, and the assembly functions with the OEM rollers and armature plate. The sprague carrier is available for most 2004 and newer Polaris ATV and UTV models. The company also has a wide range of parts available for Polaris side-by-sides in addition to the direct OEM replacement parts. Engine components, storage solutions, replacement bodywork and more are all part of the lineup. ■

Motorcycle-Themed Casual Wear

G

reat apparel can be a strong seller in your dealership. A well-priced, casual apparel line with a focus on quality, design, and unique motorcyclethemed styling makes for an easy impulse purchase for your customers.

Threat founder Terry Keane attended motorcycle and hot rod shows and rallies around the world. He saw a need for quality casual apparel, with original art graphics and sayings that the motorcycle community could relate to.

The Lethal Angel women’s apparel line is new to Parts Unlimited and offers your customers a range of casual clothing featuring unique artwork and illustrations.

New to the Parts Unlimited lineup, Lethal Threat and Lethal Angel designs have just what they might be looking for. The company that would eventually morph into these brands was founded in 1989 in a garage in the Bronx, N.Y. Built on a passion for all things fast and loud, the company’s goal was to come up with cutting edge artwork and illustrations that could adorn riders’ tricked out machines in the form of high quality, screen-printed vinyl decals. Gaining recognition for the unique artwork on its decals, an apparel line soon followed and the Lethal Threat and Lethal Angel brands were born. As an avid motorcycle rider for over 30 years, Lethal

Lethal Threat’s apparel line is built around its cutting edge artwork and illustrations. In fact, the company is always working to top its last release with punchier new designs. The company also works to offer quality garments at affordable prices, packing as much value into the gear as possible. That’s why Lethal Threat is always looking for newer, softer fabrics, innovative print techniques, and environmentally friendly washes. When it comes to customer service, Lethal Threat stands by its “No questions” exchange policy. If your customer for whatever reason is not happy with one of their garments the company will exchange the product or offer them their money back. Parts Unlimited is now carrying a range of the company’s T-shirts, raglan sleeve shirts, soft washed hoodies, classic black hoodies, screen-printed work shirts, embroidered work shirts, hats, and graphic gloves. ■

The Lethal Threat line of apparel features motorcycle-themed designs and graphics. It includes everything from hoodies to flannels.

DRIVE CHAINS

Chain Letter

The Proprietary Z-Ring

Regina Chain has ZRP chains for high-powered sportbikes and ZRT chains for touring bikes. Both feature the company’s patented Z-Ring seals.

T

hey say that with age comes wisdom, and if that is true, then Regina Motorcycle Chains must be very wise indeed; the company is celebrating its 99th anniversary this year. Today, after almost a century of making chains, Regina is best known for its proprietary Z-Ring seals for street and off-road motorcycle chains. The new-generation Z-Ring seal was patented by Regina in 2003. The seals have a specially designed conical shape on the inner side that enhances the assembling on the bushing. In addition, the Z-Ring flexes once it is assembled, and that creates a spring effect so that the seal will maintain its shape and functionality for a longer time. When it comes to street bikes, Regina has ZRP chains for high-powered sportbikes and ZRT chains for touring bikes. Both chain types feature the patented Z-Ring seals. The Z44 sealing rings used on the ZRP and ZRT chains greatly improve their performance and wear life. In fact, there is a 50 percent reduction in friction compared to traditional O-rings. Constant lubrication from special high-temperature grease in the critical pin/bushing area provides long life, as well. High-carbon alloy pins minimize wear, the increased roller thickness prolongs durability and the thicker outer plates combined with quad-riveting provide greater tensile strength. All Regina chains are made in Italy from premium European steel.

The ZRP and ZRT chains have a gold color and are available for a wide range of streetbikes and sportbikes up to 1300cc. The chains are already OE on a number of models, including the Aprilia RSV4, BMW S1000RR, Ducati Panigale 1199, KTM Duke 690 and others. Each chain comes with solid and hollow rivet links. Cliptype links are also available. Regina also offers complete chain kits for streetbikes, offroad bikes and quads. All of them feature the Z-Ring seals, and the kits offer an economical, easy way to swap out the chain and sprockets. Each kit comes complete with a heat-treated front sprocket, an induction-hardened rear sprocket and a chain pre-cut to the correct length. The steel sprockets have OEM gearing. Regina got its start manufacturing chains and free wheels for bicycles. Motorcycle chains were added to the lineup in 1939, and since those early days the company has been testing and developing its products in racing. To date, Regina riders have more than 340 world championship titles, and the knowledge gained from those successes is utilized in the products offered to your customers. ■

EXHAUSTS

Talking 2-Stroke

Exhaust Products for Those Popular Bikes for factory riders and teams. These pipes share many of the same performance characteristics of those racing pipes, but with improved, consistent craftsmanship and material quality. The Factory Fatty broadens and smooths the power curve, creating gains throughout the entire powerband, and adds increased over-rev, particularly noticeable on long, sweeping corners or similar wide-open riding.

Even when 2-stroke bikes faded from popularity, FMF continued to race, test and develop exhaust products for those highly competitive machines. Now that they’re making a comeback, FMF is right there with pipes and silencers to help boost their performance.

L

et’s talk 2-strokes. FMF and Don Emler were not only there in the early ’70s when 2-stroke competition began to grow and dominate the racing scene, but also helped fuel its popularity.

As 2-strokes began to give way to those highrevving 4-strokes, FMF established itself as a major player in performance exhaust for that segment, while not relinquishing their strong market position, availability and range of products for the 2-stroke market. And now that those highly competitive, relatively inexpensive and very enjoyable bikes are making a welcome resurgence, Emler and FMF are still right there with plenty of 2-stroke options. Throughout those years where 2-strokes marginally faded from view, FMF continued to work on products for the “smokers,” racing, testing, developing and refining varied pipe and silencer offerings for bikes ranging from 50cc and up to the big 500cc beasts. This lineup included exhaust for two- and four-wheel machines, old and new. One standout product is the FMF Gold Series Fatty. The Fattys have a broad range of fitments, and the widest coverage of models and years. The Factory Fatty is an evolution from the earlier days of the cone pipes by FMF

FMF has a range of 2-stroke silencers that is bound to meet the needs of your customer base.

Another significant product for today’s competitive and recreational off-road riding scene is the FMF Gnarly range. These pipes are a solution for riders of all levels who are into more technical riding, and are looking for incredible low and mid-range response and performance on the trails and in the woods. Gnarlys are built with thicker gauge steel and are ready to take some abuse from less than forgiving trails or obstacles – just ask riders Cody Webb, Kailub Russell and many others. FMF Gnarly pipes are readily available today for many old and new 200cc-500cc machines. With today’s environment, sound has become almost as important as performance. The FMF range of silencers includes the Powercore & Turbinecore, (older machines) Powercore 2, Powercore 2 Shorty, Turbinecore 2, and Q Silencer, plus: FMF’s newest 2.1 series of silencers must be seen (and heard) to be believed. FMF also offers a range of items for maintaining and servicing those 2-stroke (and 4-stroke) exhausts, including O-rings, spring kits, replacement stickers and muffler packing. Of special note, FMF’s high-quality Premier packing is a great investment for your customers – it’s easier to work with and more durable than stock or FMF’s standard packing. Less time repacking equals more time riding. ■

Parts for a Top-End Rebuild

Y

our customers’ next 4-stroke top-end rebuild should involve inspecting the valves, valve springs, and cam chains. In some cases, they may just need to adjust the valves with an adjustment in valve shim sizes. In other cases, they will need to replace their valve train components.

ProX has everything necessary for a complete top-end rebuild that’s an upgrade over the OE parts.

Replacing and maintaining valve train components doesn’t have to involve overpriced aftermarket parts, or cheap parts that leave quality to be desired. ProX Racing Parts offers replacement valves, valve springs, and cam chains, along with the shims and seals needed for reassembly. Some 4-stroke engines come equipped with titanium valves as original equipment, but the quality can be lacking. ProX titanium valves are forged in one piece for added strength, and are Chromium Nitride coated for surface hardness and temperature resistance that exceeds OEM standards. These valves are available whether upgrading OEM titanium parts or existing steel parts.

For those who want to focus on longevity, steel valves are also available from ProX. ProX steel valves are manufactured to exact OEM specifications and tolerances, creating a more affordable, high-quality alternative. To complete that valve train freshening up, ProX steel valve springs are available to accompany both titanium and steel valves. Replacing the cam chain is always recommended when the top end is apart. A timing chain failure in a 4-stroke can be detrimental, which is why ProX has partnered up with Borg Warner in Japan to supply OEM quality cam chains. ■

BRAKE PADS

Brakes with Benefits Upgrade That Stopping Power

W

hen it comes to motorcycle service-items, new brake pads are an easy upgrade that will really payoff out on the road, track or trail.

Replacing OE brake pads with something better is as easy as it gets. The cost is easy on the wallet and when that upgrade is DP Brakes the benefits are immediate with both expected and unexpected perks. One thing that will stand out right away for your customers is the improved braking performance DP Brakes’ pads offer over stock. With DP’s sintered-metallic pads, the DP Standards, SDP Sport HH + pads or the hypersport and race-ready RDP X-Race Titaniums there’s a strong initial bite coupled with a progressive, controlled feel. DP also uses a high-tech ceramic heat shield on certain pads. Bonded to the backing plate, it helps prevent brake fade even under rigorous braking. The pads will perform well in all conditions, hot or cold, wet or dry, and in all the applications. Even with this high-performance braking, DP’s pads are gentle on rotors.

In addition to those benefits, DP brake pads also operate virtually dust-free so that wheels and calipers remain clean. DP has even eliminated brake squeal so there’s no annoying noise on hard stopping.

The brake pads from DP Brakes offer your customers an instant upgrade over the stock pads.

DP Brakes also designs longevity into its brake pads. According to the company, its pads outlast stock pads three-to-one. Strong, fade-free performance, non-abusive on the rotors, no dust to mess up the look of wheels and calipers, no annoying noises and a lifespan three times that OE. That’s an upgrade on all counts.

The LV-10’s Roadracing Heritage

L

Inspired and influenced by LeoVince’s roadracing efforts, the LV-10 comes in black and stainless steel.

eoVince has always used the racetrack for inspiration and development, and the LV-10 slipon exhaust is no exception to that tradition. The new system was developed in collaboration with top Moto2 and Moto3 teams as well as through LeoVince’s experience in MotoGP and SBK racing. The engineers at LeoVince designed the LV-10 to have extremely compact dimensions in order to achieve maximum lightness combined with superb performance and, of course, the classic LeoVince exhaust note.

options – the titanium look finish of the steel or a Black Edition LV-10 that features a matte black finish. In addition to its compact size, the LV-10 has more roadracing-inspired design cues with a rear stainless steel mesh that embellishes the sandblasted stainless steel end cap. The exhaust mounts with a laser-cut bracket that offers great strength without any superfluous weight. Inside the LV-10, high thermal resistance fiberglass wool is applied through the use of a single proprietary and volumized yarn. This allows the sound-absorbing material to expand freely without the fibers losing integrity, so the baffling will have a longer lifespan. The LV-10 is available for a number of big-bore sportbikes and naked bikes, such as the Kawasaki ZX-10R and Z 900, Yamaha R1 and MT-10 and the Ducati Scrambler 800 Desert Sled. ■

New and Improved Powersports Chargers Each charging port will work independently, adjusting to each individual battery’s needs. The five and 10 bank chargers have at-a-glance readouts that show which station is actively charging and which is in storage mode.

attery Tender® has things covered when it comes to keeping multiple powersports vehicles charged and ready to ride. Deltran has new five and 10 bank chargers that are more powerful and have additional features from the previous models. The chargers are solutions for dealers and for riders who own multiple vehicles. Both the five and 10 bank chargers are 4-amp units (double the power of the previous model) with selections for both 6v and 12v charging. There are settings for AGM/ standard/GEL and Lithium batteries, allowing for more flexibility. The charger will top up batteries twice as fast as the previous model and will continue to prevent vehicles from being overcharged.

The five and 10 bank power chargers will automatically maintain batteries at full charge with four amps per output charging current. Each unit comes with a 6-foot lead with ring terminals and alligator clips. Inside the charger, microchip circuitry will not activate output voltage until properly connected to the battery. In other words, there is no need to worry about sparks. A 25-hour safety timer is another feature that protects both the charger and the batteries connected. Both the five and 10 bank chargers are equipped with Battery Tender’s three-year warranty. ■

Works-level Rear Sprockets

P

erformance and durability are the hallmarks of Sunstar’s Works line of sprockets. For motocross riders, the Works Triplestar aluminum rear sprockets offer a blend of longevity and lighter weight, while off-road riders can take to the trails with the sturdy Works Z stainless steel rear sprocket. The Works Triplestar rear sprockets are made from aerospace grade 7075 T-6 aluminum, with weight reduction holes for even less bulk. Sunstar’s exclusive tooth-valley design provides 50 percent more chain contact area for a smooth power transfer. Each sprocket has an extra-hard anodized coating for more durability, and available colors include hard and black anodized for all applications, blue anodized for Yamahas and orange anodized for KTMs.

Meanwhile, the Works Z stainless steel rear sprocket is stamped from 100 percent heat-treated 410db stainless steel. Electro-less nickel plating adds a layer of protection. One of the most noticeable traits of the Works Z sprocket is the offset tooth design, which acts as a self-cleaning mechanism. 1 1/31/18 4:44 PM Sunstar Ad 8.375x5.25_PartsMag.pdf

Sunstar’s Works Z sprockets are stronger and lighter than the OE parts, and are built to provide more chain contact and improved self-cleaning capabilities.

The Works Z provides the best of both worlds for off-road riders. It can provide up to three times the product life of a standard steel sprocket, but it is designed to weigh up to 40 percent less. The Works Z is available in a 48-52 tooth range for nearly all 125cc and up off-road motorcycles, making it a very versatile sprocket that provides long life, reduced weight and improved self-cleaning capabilities. ■
