It’s Show Time! by D on Em de
his issue of Parts Magazine is our Official Show Issue for the upcoming NVP Product Expo in Madison, WI. It was originally just called the NVP, short for National Vendor Presentations. For as long as the magazine has been in existence, there has been the annual gathering of the sales reps, vendors, Parts Unlimited and LeMans Corporation management. For many years that was the whole show, with the rep force broken into regions and rotating around various meeting rooms to hear the latest from the leading vendors about their lines for the next year. A later addition was adding a dealer open house that was originally held at the Janesville warehouse, with dealers invited to stop by to meet and talk with the participating vendors. That was a nice addition, which eventually led to the current format that includes everything the old “NVP” was for the reps, the Product Expo for the Parts Unlimited dealers, plus the “Meet & Greet” on Saturday night that we all attend and enjoy. NEWS EVENTS Collins Named President and CEO of LeMans Corporation SCHUMACHER TO SERVE AS DIRECTOR OF PURCHASING
eMans Corporation announced that Mike Collins has been appointed the company’s new president and CEO. Collins has been with LeMans for 24 years, most recently working as vice president of purchasing. “Mike has successfully directed our purchasing department for several years, guaranteeing dealers the best fill-rate in the industry,” said Fred Fox, chairman and founder of LeMans. “He has also developed strong and wellrespected relationships with all of our Mike Collins major vendors. We are excited to have Mike at the helm to lead the company as we plan for continued growth and expansion.” LeMans also announced that company veteran Bruce Schumacher has been appointed as director of purchasing. “Bruce has been a valued member of the LeMans team for many years,” Fox said. “Most recently he has been very
instrumental in our successful expansion into the European market. He will continue to direct the purchasing team at Parts Europe in his new role.” ■

Class of 2017 INDUCTEES ANNOUNCED FOR AMA MOTORCYCLE HALL OF FAME
MF Racing founder Donnie Emler Sr. joins four other notable industry figures as the newest inductees in the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame.
The group will be honored on September 22 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio in conjunction with the American International Motorcycle Expo. In addition to Emler Sr., the lineup includes off-road racing champion Eddie Lojak Sr., world motocross champion and Road 2 Recovery founder Bob Moore, racer and filmmaker Peter Starr, and racer, team owner and publisher John Ulrich.
“The AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Class of 2017 includes giants of the motorcycle lifestyle, sport and industry,” said Ken Ford, a member of the AMA board of directors and chairman of the American Motorcycle Heritage Foundation board. “Each of these individuals has made a lasting impact on motorcycling in some profound way. The Hall of Fame will shine a little brighter this Sept. 22, when these five motorcyclists are enshrined for perpetuity.” The AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame was established in 1998 by the AMHF to honor the legends and heroes of American motorcycling and highlight their achievements and contributions to motorcycling. continued on page 12...

AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Class of 2017 Donnie Emler Sr. helped establish the roots of the motocross and off-road aftermarket performance industry, which continues to thrive today. Emler Sr. started Flying Machine Factory, known today as FMF Racing, out of his garage in Hawthorne, CA in 1973. Early clients included such riders as AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Marty Smith, the first AMA Motocross 125cc National Champion. Today, FMF Racing sponsors top riders and is a successful aftermarket exhaust and accessory company, making all of its performance products in its Southern California factory. Eddie Lojak Sr. was a three-time overall champion in the AMA Hare Scrambles National Championship Series and a nine-time overall bike champion in the Grand National Cross
County Series. The 1982 AMA Amateur Athlete of the Year, Lojak Sr. also was the top American on the U.S. International Six Days Enduro World Trophy Team that year. Bob Moore won the AMA 125cc West Region Supercross Championship in 1985, and later captured the 1994 125cc World Motocross Championship. Moore notched 28 individual moto wins in the 125cc and 250cc divisions. He co-founded Road 2 Recovery in 2000 to offer support to injured AMA motocross and Supercross racers. Peter Starr, a racer in England in the mid-20th century, is best known for his later career as a filmmaker. He has produced more than 50 feature films and specials featuring some of the all-time greats in motorcycling history, including his most famous film, “Take it to the Limit.” John Ulrich was the 1983 and 1984 WERA National Endurance Champion and the 1996 WERA National Challenge Series 125cc Grand Prix Champion. He also cofounded Team Hammer Inc., and started Roadracing World & Motorcycle Technology magazine. In 2001, he started the nonprofit Roadracing World Action Fund to facilitate the use of soft barriers at racetracks. ■

The French rider arrived at the Spring Creek National in Millville, MN ready to race and promptly pulled off a careerfirst in the 450cc class by powering through both motos for back-to-back wins. This stellar performance at the eighth round of the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship earned Musquin his second career overall win. Musquin started the season strong by scoring his first 450cc class National win in round two at Glen Helen, a victory that put him in the points lead. He added some more points at the next round in Colorado, but subsequently suffered a torn

meniscus. The injury left him working to salvage points for the championship in the next couple rounds. Musquin jumped right into it in Millville by pulling the holeshot at the start of the first 450 moto, taking a lead that he never relinquished, and kept on ripping until crossing the finish line for the win. After getting second at the start of moto two, Musquin took the lead in the second lap and continued to dominate until winning. “I had a perfect first moto and got the holeshot then tried to pull a gap on everyone. I think I had over a 20 second gap, which is the best feeling ever,” Musquin said. “I controlled the race and was able to be smooth and consistent. Going 1-1 is a dream come true in the 450 class.” ■
Million-Mile Wing PARTS UNLIMITED DEALER HITS MILESTONE WITH 1975 GL
hen he first picked up his 1975 Honda GL1000 more than four decades ago, Allan Zahrt never could have imagined where – and how far – that trusty machine would take him.
“When you buy a motorcycle, you don’t really think you’re planning to do something like that,” says Zahrt, the coowner of Pro Motorsports, an independent repair shop in Wausau, WI.
You see, by the time you read this, Zahrt will have celebrated logging a hefty1 million miles on his teal Gold Wing. Even on a motorcycle model long associated with eating up the miles, Zahrt’s feat certainly accounts for some serious seat time.
Zahrt was only 19 years old when he bought the bike in June 1976 while working as a young mechanic at his local Honda dealership. He then proceeded to hit the highway, traveling to all the lower 48 states and throughout Canada.

Averaging about 26,000 miles a season, Zahrt’s odometer kept rolling along, right up until the original motor needed replacement at 382,000 miles. He’s now on his fourth motor, which he installed at 697,000 miles. He likes to keep a healthy supply of donor bikes on hand for other needed replacement parts.

acob “Jake” Gagne seemingly burst onto the American road racing scene in 2016. But for those who were paying attention, his climb to the top tier of the sport was a progression of talent, passion and sponge-like ability to quickly absorb the skills and knowledge required to run with the best in the nation.
For 2017 Gagne is riding a Honda CBR1000 with support from American Honda and sponsorship by Genuine Broaster Chicken and Parts Unlimited. Sit down with us and get to know a little bit more about this talented rider.
Gagne is a natural two-wheeled talent. He got his first dirt bike at the age of 5, and was racing at the local southern California motocross tracks with his father right away. As he grew, he dreamed of becoming a factory motocross star.
I still live in San Diego. I really love it here. It’s hard to beat the weather that’s for sure. I’m also close to the coast, which is really nice because I spend a lot of time at the beach and in the water. There are also a ton of really nice moto tracks around this area so that’s another huge perk for me. My parents, Marc and Mo Gagne, also have lived in San Diego pretty much their whole lives so I guess the city is in my blood.
Believe it or not, Gagne did not ride a roadracing machine until he tried out for the Red Bull AMA Rookies Cup. He finished fourth and impressed the judges and sponsors. After that, it was a rapid transition from motocross to road racing, as he won the 2010 title in only his second season. Gagne has since gone on to win the AMA Pro Daytona Sportbike title, and in 2015 he became MotoAmerica Superstock 1000 champion. But, not content with his success, the young rider also rode an AMA Motocross National in 2015 and took part in the inaugural Superprestigio of the Americas flat track event in 2015.
Parts Magazine: Where are you living now?
I understand you like to surf? I really love surfing, that’s probably my number one hobby besides motorcycles. Anything around the ocean is cool for me. I ride my mountain bike quite a bit as well and hike and camp as much as I can. I play a little guitar also when I’m hanging at home. I don’t watch any TV or anything really so I just try to stay busy training and learning.

What was your first motorcycle and how did you get into riding? My Dad got me a little KTM 50 when I was around 5. I remember the day I swung a leg over that thing for the first time and I’ve been hooked ever since. My dad has been a motorcycle guy his whole life, and pretty much loves all motorsports. Before he got me a bike I just remember going to the moto track with him and watching him rip around. My dad is definitely one of my biggest role models and I’m very lucky to have his guidance.
How did you get into racing? We pretty much went straight into racing motocross as soon as I got a 50. We had a cool track called Barona that was close by and that’s where we spent most of our weekends racing when I was really young. We started doing bigger races as I got a little older on 65s and doing pretty well. My goal was to race pro motocross/Supercross as I got older but things took an interesting turn in 2008.

Was that when you became a road racer? My dad heard about this program called the Red Bull Rookies Cup that they were bringing to the U.S. to follow the AMA Superbike series in 2008. So, we sent my resume not really thinking much of it and sure enough we get an email saying that I’d been selected along with 130 other kids to go to Barber, AL for the tryouts.

Gagne started his career racing motocross, making it to the professional ranks in the National Motocross Series. He then tried his hand in road racing in the Red Bull Rookies Cup and everything changed.
It was a three-day deal and they narrowed it down over the weekend, and then about a week later we got the call saying I was one of the 23 kids selected to be a part of it. I was pretty shocked because the tryouts were my very first time riding a road race bike and I definitely was one of the slowest kids to get picked. However, throughout the year I learned a ton and ended up getting a few wins and podiums by the end of the series.
Tell us about the path to your current level.
In a career that’s taken him from Europe with the Rookies Cup, to the MotoAmerica Superstock title, Gagne is now gunning for the AMA Superbike Championship.
What are some of your goals? Obviously the dream would be to race MotoGP someday. But, we’ve got some championships to win before that could happen. I’m just thankful that I get the opportunity to race killer motorcycles with a ton of great people surrounding and supporting me. One day at a time. I just accepted a one-race deal to ride my first World Superbike event on the Red Bull Honda. There are always opportunities.
After my first year road racing in the Red Bull Rookies Cup here, I was one of the three American kids to get selected to go to Europe and race the Rookies Cup over there alongside MotoGP. It was an amazing two years with a ton of learning and progressing. I won the Championship my second year in 2010, which was pretty surreal for us all. We were hoping to move up to the Moto3 World Championship the following year, which is what most kids around me did. Unfortunately, that was very tough to do being an American.
Tell us about Parts Unlimited and your other sponsors.
I ended up coming back to the states and racing 600s with Roadrace Factory and I’ve been with Danny Walker and the Team ever since. We managed to win the Daytona Sportbike 600 championship in 2014 and then the 2015 MotoAmerica Superstock 1000 championship the following year in 2015. It’s been an amazing ride with this team and we’ve had a really fun five and a half years so far.

hen those new model year dirtbikes and ATVs hit the showroom floor, FMF Racing is already waiting in the wings with multiple new fitments across its broad lineup of exhaust products. Waterproof Jackets Head Icon’s Fall Line
The Tarmac and Squalborn are two new waterproof jackets from Icon.
con will unveil its Fall 2017 gear during the NVP Product Expo in Madison, WI, with pieces ranging from updated classics to new Icon 1000 waterproof jackets. The new showpiece of Icon 1000 is the Squalborn jacket. The three-layer textile piece has retro cues partnered with D3O impact protectors. The big feature of the Squalborn is that it is fully waterproof and breathable, so it has the perks of a rain jacket while looking much more fashionable. Icon’s sport fit means the Squalborn is tailored but not tight, and stretch ballistic articulation panels ensure easy movement. YKK Aquagard zippers, a removable SatinCore insulated vest liner, and pit zips are more of the perks. Maybe Icon knows something about the future of the world’s weather, because the Fall collection also includes the Tarmac waterproof jacket. The Tarmac has a four-way stretch HYCOR waterproof/breathable chassis paired with ballistic reinforcement panels. With no graphics to speak of, the Tarmac maintains a refined look, especially with its sport fit. The Merc is designed to be tough enough for motorcycling, but it looks casual, with Icon’s relaxed fit, a storable hood and oversized kangaroo pockets. The GeoRacer gloves have a sublimated poly chassis to show off the graphics and a Battlehide goatskin palm to ward off the asphalt. A D3O knuckle insert and Neoprene wrist closure keep a rider’s hands swathed in a psychedelic cocoon. The gloves are also touchscreen enabled. Icon has updated three of its classic boots, and the nextgen Superduty 5, Truant 2 and Patrol 2 have the attitude of past iterations, with updated safety features. Instead of a steel shank inside, all three of the styles provide full-foot reinforcement without sacrificing comfort. The boots are also equipped with D3O ankle protectors. ■

Better Fuel Systems Through Science
cience is pretty cool, especially when it is applied to a product that makes a powersports vehicle perform better. The Helix 5in1 fuel additive from Helix Racing Products combats water contamination and has multiple benefits for a fuel system, and it is exclusively available to Drag Specialties dealers.
Helix 5in1 prevents water buildup and phase separation in fuel tanks with a proprietary formula that emulsifies water — any water in the fuel is broken down to the molecular level. The water is then unable to form droplets
because the surface of the molecule is isolated from bonding with other water or ethanol molecules. Sexy science talk aside, what that means is no rust, no freezing and no interference with fuel injectors or carburetors because the water molecules are too small and too isolated from each other to oxidize, form ice crystals or affect engine performance. Helix 5in1 can be used in any gasoline engine, including 2-strokes, 4-strokes, cars, trucks and even lawn equipment. In old, stale fuel, Helix 5in1 effectively reverses phase separation, where water has bonded with the ethanol in fuel. Helix 5in1 applied to fresh fuel prevents phase separation from ever happening in the first place. Helix 5in1 has a wealth of other benefits, too. The recommended dose of Helix 5in1 for ongoing performance and fuel stabilization is ½ ounce per gallon of fuel for a year of fuel stability. A double-strength dose is recommended for long-term storage of a vehicle.

Bluetooth-Enabled Audio Solutions Two custom speaker pods have dual 2-inch speakers. The dual design keeps the speakers from being too big for the handlebars, and the kit comes with chrome clamps to fit 7/8-inch, 1-inch or 1¼-inch handlebars. The MA-4BT kit is also RAM Mount compatible, so if the supplied clamps don’t work for an install, the RAM mounts give total flexibility.
This universal handlebar kit is designed for motorcycles, but will work on ATVs, UTVs and even golf carts. It brings Bluetooth-powered music anywhere your customers want to go.
The combination amp/controller has a highlevel audio output for adding amplifiers and more speakers. Classic Two-Stroke Exhausts
wo-strokes were the machines that dominated racing when Pro Circuit began over three decades ago. Now, after taking a backseat to the new generation four-strokes, two-strokes are making a major comeback, both as new machines and rebuilt vintage and used bikes. Pro Circuit still offers pipes and silencers for select late ’80s, ’90s and early 2000s models for Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki, and Yamaha two-stroke machines. Those customers who are pulling their old bikes from the backs of their garages or are buying and rebuilding vintage two-strokes can still get significant performance enhancements from Pro Circuit two-stroke exhaust systems. Remember when champions like Jeremy McGrath and Ricky Carmichael were Pro Circuit riders winning races and titles? Engine Components that Take a Beating
here’s no question that dirtbikes take a lot of abuse during a full season of riding and racing through rough conditions. The off-season is the time when it’s critical for riders to examine engine components in preparation for another full season ahead. ProX offers a variety of replacement key components, including everything from valves to pistons to clutch kits. Each piston kit includes rings, wrist pins and circlips. We all know that the clutch takes a lot of abuse over the course of a motocross season. Clutch slippage, discolored plates and that unmistakable smell of a burnt clutch are all symptoms of a bike badly in need of some new components. ProX complete clutch plate kits contain all friction and steel plates as well as clutch springs for a complete refresh. The plates are manufactured to exact OEM specs, but they have more durability and better feel than a clutch with stock plates. Because ProX clutch springs are 10 percent stiffer than OEM, control and instant drive attributes are enhanced. The advantage of fuel injection mapping becomes apparent when throttle valves actually open and shut in unison. compact sportbike deserves a compact exhaust. LeoVince has introduced the LV Pro, a small but mighty slip-on exhaust for the Yamaha YZF-R3.
The LV Pro is designed to combine a racing look with a compact size, all while maintaining LeoVince’s signature Italian styling, and it is available in both stainless steel and carbon fiber finishes. Both versions of the LV Pro have a Shark Cut end cap for edgy aesthetics. The cap is produced in full carbon to offer weight savings and high heat resistance. The fastening straps are also made of carbon fiber. Not surprisingly, the LV Pro shorty slip-ons offer a significant reduction from the weight of the stock canister. New Manufacturing Processes, New Parts
rinity Racing has been helping off-road vehicles gain horsepower since 1978 by specializing in exhaust systems and engine upgrades for ATV and UTV models. Parts Unlimited carries Trinity Racing’s full system and slip-on options, as well as EFI tuners designed to integrate seamlessly with Trinity exhausts. All of Trinity Racing’s exhausts are manufactured at the company’s state-of-the-art facility in Huntington Beach, CA. CNC bending, TIG welding, CNC machining and laser cutting and etching mean that Trinity can design, fabricate, machine and test its systems all under one roof. The high-tech digs are a relatively new chapter in Trinity Racing’s long history. Tolemar, LLC acquired Trinity Racing last year, and the new owners used their experience manufacturing high-performance exhausts for OEMs to revamp Trinity Racing’s processes. Updated production techniques enabled Trinity to begin producing products at a faster rate while ensuring better uniformity, an approach that has seen a big boost in sales for the Stage 5 exhaust.

Trinity Racing’s Stage 5 exhaust systems and slip-on mufflers for UTV applications are a way to get significant horsepower and torque gains. The single- and dualmuffler designs fit performance UTVs like the Polaris RZR XP Turbo, Can-Am Maverick X3 and Yamaha YXZ 1000R. The fully TIG-welded systems include 6061 billet aluminum muffler brackets and billet machined exhaust tips. Oxygen sensor bungs and USFS-approved spark arrestors are part of the package, too. The mufflers come in two finish options, including brushed aluminum or black. In addition to the full systems, Parts Unlimited also carries the slip-on mufflers for each application. All of the systems and slip-ons are made in the USA, like the company’s other products. Common components throughout the various applications means that dealers have less information to sift through — and fewer parts to stock — when it comes to spare and replacement parts. Trinity Racing’s EFI tuners are designed to enhance a Trinity exhaust system. The Stage 5 EFI tuner comes pre-programmed and tuned for a Trinity Racing exhaust. The on-the-fly air/fuel tuning programmer has plug-in technology for easy installation and a push-button interface for easy use. No computer is required to install and use the Stage 5 tuner.

Forged Clutch Baskets for Strength, Reliability
ff-road riders will often turn to aftermarket clutch components to keep things running smoothly under even the toughest of conditions. Wiseco clutch baskets come to the rescue of riders who need a stronger, more reliable option. In fact, Wiseco’s clutch basket is forged and comes with a lifetime guarantee. Stock clutch baskets are made of diecast aluminum, which tend to wear out or notch sooner than desired. Wiseco’s solution is a clutch basket made from 6061 aluminum that is heat-treated for durability. The metal blanks are forged, a process that helps give the aluminum increased tensile strength and resistance to impact and fatigue. The forging process also makes the clutch basket more ductile than cast or billet aluminum baskets.
Wiseco produces every component necessary for a full clutch rebuild, including a forged clutch basket, rubber cushions, fiber and steel plates, springs, a forged inner hub and a forged pressure plate. Wiseco clutch baskets arrive with fasteners and a preapplied thread locker coating, along with any other parts necessary for clutch assembly, like backing plates and hardware required for installing the main gear. Easy-tounderstand instructions are also included, so riders have the option of getting their clutch professionally installed or turning it into a DIY project.

To give the clutch baskets even more strength, each premachined piece of forged aluminum is as close to the final size as it can be. The less material that is machined off, the more original strength will remain in the final product. Once the clutch basket is forged and precision machined, it is hard-coat anodized and coated with Teflon to increase wear and abrasion resistance, improve lubricity and decrease the likelihood of corrosion. All of those elements combined result in clutch performance that can be felt by the smooth pull of the clutch lever.
