Dear Partners and Friends, Our community has the key ingredients to open the doors leading to opportunity and prosperity for all. Grand Rapids Community Foundation is working alongside all our partners to unlock our potential as a community.

We are doing this through grants and program-related investments to support the work of nonprofits; scholarships and educational initiatives to support the career dreams of our youth; and collaboration with community members who share a vision for our region’s future. All of this is made possible through the time, talents and treasures of our generous donors, nonprofit partners and volunteers.

In 2017-2018, our assets grew to $348,811,755, after market growth of +7 percent. This made it possible for us to award $12.5 million in grants to local nonprofits and scholarships to students in our community. We also are proud to have established 42 new funds. This, along with bequests and generous gifts from annual donors, has built our endowment and strengthened our partnerships.

We believe anything is possible in our community and that, together with our partners, we have the power to create a West Michigan that we are all proud to call home. We are establishing new relationships, engaging in new conversations and collaborating with new people and organizations. We, with the help of our partners, are making a positive impact in the greater Grand Rapids area through listening, learning and collaborating to help activate the potential we see everywhere in our region.

We have been telling you about our North Star for some time now and our desire to build and sustain an inclusive economy and thriving community in West Michigan. What does that mean? It means there is enough opportunity and prosperity in West Michigan for us all, regardless of race, gender, class, age, religion, sexual orientation,

ability, ethnicity or immigration status. It means creating opportunities that celebrate and welcome all community members.

It means putting in the work and having the tough conversations that will truly make West Michigan a place where we all can be our best selves, live our biggest dreams and work collectively to build a community unlike any other.

We still believe that the best way for us to help develop a thriving community is to focus on creating an inclusive economy. That has not changed. Our trustees and staff see the world through the multifaceted lens of equity, hope and opportunity. We have spent a great deal of time listening to many voices in our community—including those that may not have been heard before. We see you and we hear you. We have learned so much and are moving forward to make sure that the insights you have shared are honored.

In this report, you will find stories of how members of our community are partnering and working together— directly and indirectly—to move the needle on the most pressing issues in Kent County. You will find stories of how our community is activating our North Star by working together to create practical and innovative solutions to solve both grassroots and systems level problems in our six priority areas.

Priority Area Education

Our education priority is to help first generation and lowincome students obtain a degree or high-quality credential. When all students get the skills and opportunities they need to succeed after high school, then our entire community benefits. Challenge Scholars and the African American Heritage Fund are two great examples of how gifts from donors work to create educational equity that will ripple prosperity throughout our region for generations to come.

The first initiative aims to ensure that Challenge Scholars students on Grand Rapids’ West Side are socially and academically prepared for post-secondary success. “Challenge Scholars is an opportunity for families to generationally change the direction they’re heading,” said Dennis Branson, Westwood Middle School principal and Dream Fund Committee member.

The African American Heritage Fund helps reduce the impact of summer learning loss among African American youth. “We need to be preparing the next generation to be able to take the jobs that the workforce will offer. How do we do that? We have to give back and make sure that folks are prepared here locally,” said Kenneth James, an African American Heritage Fund donor.

Challenge Scholars Challenge Scholars is a transformational community initiative, funded by Grand Rapids Community Foundation in partnership with Grand Rapids Public Schools.

The program takes away the burden of affording post-secondary education for families whose children attend Union High School and its feeder schools.

The Challenge Scholars Dream Fund | Fondo de SueĂąos was created to support ideas for projects in schools and in the community to accelerate student success.

Unlocking Our Potential We know that a strong education is foundational for future success. Our community partners agree and have co-created opportunities with us over the last year. They have taught us how to bring community together, build relationships and collaborate on innovative ideas that foster student success. Results include the new Challenge Scholars Dream Fund | Fondo de Sueños, donors getting involved as student mentors, and grant allocations from Field of Interest funds like the African American Heritage Fund.

Dave Kutsche and his family donate to Challenge Scholars and other education initiatives, to honor the legacy of their late son, Matthew. At the Community Foundation, we hear stories of people wanting to make a difference in the lives of students from every corner of Kent County.

They equate investing in students with investing in our community’s future. We are honored to help donors invest in education, whether through giving to named programs or funds, creating a scholarship fund or other ways to change generational trajectories of student success.

We believe that healthy neighborhoods provide access to safe, affordable, quality housing; strong educational systems; and sustainable businesses that employ and serve neighborhood residents.

As housing costs rise throughout Kent County, many families are being displaced. We work with our partners to ensure that residents have access to both affordable rents and the benefits of homeownership.

“For people to feel that they have a place in the community, they need a spot that they call theirs. It’s where you settle in and form roots and relationships,” said Carrie L. Boer, treasurer of the Peter C. and Emajean Cook Foundation, which maintains a Donor Advised Fund at the Community Foundation.

This is certainly true for David Washington, who refers to himself as the gatekeeper of the southeast Grand Rapids home that originally belonged to his great-grandmother.

“It’s a generational thing,” he said. “Being a homeowner is very prideful.” Learning home maintenance from Home Repair Services inspired him to volunteer for the nonprofit.

“Single-family homeownership is such an important gateway to family stability. It's an incredible opportunity for folks to build equity and create generational wealth," said Joel Ruiter, Home Repair Services executive director.

Home Repair Services Home Repair Services helps Kent County homeowners identify and prioritize home maintenance and repair items, and connects them with resources that promote safe and stable housing. Most recently, Grand Rapids Community Foundation collaborated on a grant to support the Home Maintenance Check-up program, which provides free in-home inspections and education to homeowners in Kent County.

The history of housing in our community is not pretty. So, our efforts to chart a new path to housing and neighborhoods in Kent County means disrupting the norm. We provide financial support through traditional grants to nonprofits working on the front lines of the housing crisis and program-related investments to community development financial institutions. The Community Foundation is also bringing together local funders to address challenges and opportunities and to unify in how we might work together to better serve our community.

The Peter C. and Emajean Cook Foundation is a legacy of Peter C. and Emajean (Pat) Cook of Grand Rapids. Carrie L. Boer serves as the treasurer of the foundation and continues to help make investments—financially and in the community—in their memory.

“The support of the Community Foundation and helping open up the gateway to homeownership for all communities, all ages, all backgrounds, is so critical for our community to be one that’s known for its equity, its justice, its vibrancy,” said Joel. “It’s a more interesting place for us all to enjoy if everyone can have the opportunity to successfully experience the stability and all the economic benefits of owning a home.”

Carrie believes progress will happen as partnerships strengthen between housing agencies, shelters and funders.

Most importantly, she says we must be respectful of community members who simply need a little help.

In a thriving community, every person has access to good paying jobs, affordable housing and overall financial stability. We believe that an inclusive economy is the pathway to a thriving West Michigan. This means all must share opportunity, prosperity and progress.

“We must ensure that our local economy is one that thrives because it includes all sectors, all people, all backgrounds,” said Renee Williams, vice president, community development for Huntington Bank. “Without financial stability, especially for those who are underserved, we aren’t able to have the full thriving community we desire.”

This vision is being realized through community members like Staysha Rodriguez, owner of Sweet Amora’s Pastries and assistant manager at Rising Grinds Café. “I just saw the opportunity, and then I went for it, and I was good at it,” she said.

We know that opportunity and access have the power to change the trajectory of a family’s future.

“One of the shifts that we are seeing is this idea of moving away from poverty alleviation to wealth creation,” said Dr. Justin Beene, a Grand Rapids Nehemiah Project board member. “We have to look at the systems that perpetuate the poverty, and the systems that perpetuate the wealth. We have to do the work of making those systems equitable."

Grand Rapids Nehemiah Project: Rising Grinds Café Rising Grinds Café is a locally owned social enterprise of the Grand Rapids Center for Community Transformation and Grand Rapids Nehemiah Project. It provides employment and professional development for youth and adults living in Grand Rapids’ Madison Square neighborhood. They

work to cultivate creativity and community with every cup served. They envision a café where all people can come together in conversation over a cup of coffee. Grand Rapids Community Foundation is a proud grant partner of this innovative work.

His vision is for Rising Grinds Café to be a place where the millionaire and the marginalized can feel equally comfortable and talk about changes we need to see in our city. And, it’s happening.

Our approach to partnership is that the community is the expert, and everyone brings something to the table and shares it. “There is no false dichotomy of giver and receiver, where the giver is superior and the receiver is inferior,” Justin said of his experience collaborating with the Community Foundation through Rising Grinds. “This partnership has created opportunities, such as trying something that can create future enterprises.

Like the relationships forming at Rising Grinds Café, the Community Foundation is also working to develop and inspire new, and often unconventional, relationships to promote economic equity. "I'm excited about the Community Foundation's great work. I've witnessed their impact of collaborating with many different partners that otherwise may not have been able to make an impact in the community," Renee said.

She has been in the banking and finance industry for most of her career and is vice president, community development for Huntington Bank. “As we make investments in our community, we have to ensure that financial opportunities are available to all. I was prompted in my heart to want to leave a legacy personally.

We know that health equity is essential for a growing community. We also know that people of certain ethnicities and/or socioeconomic status have higher rates of chronic, preventable diseases. Disparities persist because of unequal access to health services.

“You can’t really reach your potential as an individual or as a community if you don’t have a healthy population,” said Maureen Kirkwood, executive director of Health Net of West Michigan. “Focusing on these very fundamental things that every human being deserves, that’s how we unlock the community’s potential.”

Community-wide health equity results in a healthy, more productive workforce. It contributes to students' academic success. “Health access is critical for everyone, regardless of economic status, race and culture,” said Dr. Veneese Chandler, executive director and CEO of Family Outreach Center. “All of us contribute to the overall health of the community.

Access to healthcare is critical to our growth and development in the community, because our community’s people are only as healthy as their access allows."

Family Outreach Center

Family Outreach Center has a long history of leading the way in promoting healthy family living by reaching out to underserved populations. Grand Rapids Community Foundation's grant partnership supports their work to ensure that low-income residents and communities of color, who are historically underserved, have access to affordable, culturally responsive mental and behavioral healthcare services.

Health Net of West Michigan Health Net bridges gaps in healthcare by connecting individuals with basic resources that support health-related social needs.

It partners with healthcare professionals, institutions and community organizations to provide education, accessibility and individualized support.

Grand Rapids Community Foundation provided a grant to Health Net that will be used to help clients navigate between the formal healthcare system and community services that address health-related social needs.

He and his wife, Nancy, founded the Andy Lubbers Be NICE Memorial Fund and the Andy Lubbers Memorial Fund for Mental Health at the Community Foundation in honor of their late son.

Working together across silos is the only way to overcome health access barriers in Kent County. The Community Foundation is honored to partner with nonprofits, community organizations and passionate donors to address health inequities in Kent County.

Our environmental grantmaking focuses on expanding the tree canopy, restoring river water and acquiring land in the urban core.

These priorities are essential to creating a healthy environment where everyone can reach their full potential.

“Our community thrives when we all thrive,” said Lori J. Baker, former principal at Baker Holtz, a CPA firm.

“Economic growth sometimes brings environmental degradation, but it doesn’t have to. With enough focus on sustainability, the area can thrive, and the people can thrive. You need clean air, clean water and a great sanitation system. The air we breathe has to be clean.”

We need to pair economic growth with environmental equity because the environment impacts our food, health, stress levels, education, experiences and more. When all people—regardless of socioeconomic status—can thrive, we bolster our community’s ability to engage a happy, healthy workforce.

As community members, we know the path to sustainability starts with us. The Community Foundation keeps reducing waste. Our billings, grant applications and scholarship processes are now almost entirely paperless.

Kids’ Food Basket Kids' Food Basket is a grassroots, community solution to childhood hunger. The organization’s most recent initiative is preserving historic farmland within Grand Rapids city limits. This farm will produce thousands of pounds of healthy food each year. It will promote experiential learning by getting kids outside into nature, so they understand where food comes from and how to make healthy food choices.

Unlocking Our Potential Can a growing city really couple economic growth with environmental sustainability?

Our environmental partners say yes—as long as we work together to make it happen. “This community—while we have our barriers, inequities and environmental injustices—also has tremendous opportunity,” said Bridget Clark Whitney, founding CEO of Kids’ Food Basket. “There’s a can-do spirit here in West Michigan that breaks through barriers. When we're in alignment and working together for the greater good, we can truly make this community thrive for everyone."

The Community Foundation takes collaboration for environmental justice seriously. We think deeply and partner with the community to provide more parks and open space for more citizens. Our Access Camps program offers overnight camp experiences to underserved children in Kent County. We work together with community members and nonprofit partners who are making great waves in environmental justice in Kent County. Together, our community can continue growth, dismantle environmental inequity and unlock the potential for all to have access to clean air, clean water and green space.

Lori works as an “of counsel” advisor for Baker Holtz after being a principal there for more than 30 years. Her business savvy, coupled with her passion for the environment, make her a valuable asset on many local boards and committees. She directs her giving to the Community Foundation to support environmental causes.

“We need to have green space, we need to have food, we need to have places where people can go outside and just breathe the air and decompress from their stressful jobs or take their kids out to play a little.”

We are committed to partnering with organizations and individuals working to build our community’s capacity for inclusion and equity. We also aim to improve access to cultural opportunities that engage diverse populations. What does that look like?

For Kristen Taylor, Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts development officer, it’s making sure that everyone’s culture, background and race is represented when they walk into a museum. “They need to be able to see themselves,” she said.

“As one of our exhibition advisory committee members said, ‘We need to have both windows and mirrors.’”

Beca Velazquez-Publes directs Urban Core Collective, a consortium of six local nonprofits that bring communities of color together to obtain equal access to education, economic prosperity, health, power and influence. Beca suggests engagement is listening to community voices and asking whether we’re lifting up or suppressing them. It’s asking, “How does community voice impact change? How does community voice stop systems that have been in movement for years? How do we have a different expectation of how community engages?"

Urban Core Collective UCC aims to uplift historically marginalized communities to greater self-sufficiency. It unites communities of color to reduce the effects of systemic racism. UCC member organizations include Baxter Community Center, Grand Rapids African American Health Institute, Hispanic Center of Western Michigan, Family Outreach Center, Urban League of West Michigan and United Methodist Community House. Grand Rapids Community Foundation collaborated with UCC through a grant to develop and support strategies that authentically engage and partner with communities of color to shift power and influence.

UICA The Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts builds creative community by fostering new forms of expression, promoting collaboration, and providing genuine experiences with contemporary art. A grant from Grand Rapids Community Foundation supported grassroots and media outreach to invite and engage diverse audiences for the "Transitions: New Photography from Bangladesh" exhibit. This partnership supported UICA’s efforts to make art more inclusive and accessible for all Grand Rapids residents.

They believe it’s critical to see each person’s voice as valuable, regardless of their life story.

“I know that the people at the Community Foundation are being incredibly thoughtful to make sure that the right alliances are happening,” she said.

We are doing this by redefining our role in community and how we show up and walk with our partners. “Traditionally in philanthropy, we see a patriarchal kind of relationship,” said Beca.

Grand Rapids Community Foundation makes competitive grants to nonprofits in Kent County.

Our grant priority areas include education (with a focus on Challenge Scholars), the environment, health, the arts and social engagement, neighborhoods and prosperity. We focus our grantmaking on inclusion and equity. This list includes grants from our Fund for Community Good, Field of Interest and Designated Funds.

The Community Foundation is the largest provider of college scholarships in Kent County. This year we awarded more than $1.4 million in scholarships to 641 students.

Our grants and scholarships totaled $12.5 million, with Donor Advised Funds contributing $5.5 million to the total.

This was another successful year for Grand Rapids Community Foundation from a financial perspective. Gift revenue of $12.9 million was up +91 percent from the previous year, and we awarded $12.5 million in grants and scholarships. We are so grateful to our generous donor partners, who share in our commitment to see our community continue to grow and prosper.

We also offer two additional investment options for our donor partners. The Balanced Pool, a 60 percent stock/40 percent bond fund, returned +8.4 percent for the year. The Socially Responsible Pool, a 60 percent stock/40 percent bond fund that considers both financial and social good in its investments, returned +5 percent for the year.

The Balanced Plus Pool, our main endowed pool, returned +7 percent for the year. This pool is very diversified, which provides long-term investment returns while managing risk. This year’s returns were relatively wide ranging, yet positive across every asset class. Returns in the US equity market were again very strong as increased consumer demand, lower income tax rates and continued relatively low interest rates drove corporate earnings. Returns were lower in the international and fixed income asset classes. This range of returns in asset classes is the reason we maintain a diversified portfolio.

All Grand Rapids Community Foundation portfolios are under the direct oversight of the Investment Review Committee, which reports to the Board of Trustees.

The Investment Review Committee is composed of senior level business and investment professionals who focus on aligning the investment portfolio with the Community Foundation’s long-term financial goals. We are grateful to this committee for their dedication and service.

In alignment with our North Star and commitment to building and sustaining an inclusive economy and thriving community, we keep looking for ways to maximize our returns while championing inclusion through our portfolio management. We have partnered with our investment advisor to increase representational diversity among our asset managers. During the 2017-2018 fiscal year, the Investment Review Committee approved adding a new minority asset manager. We have also added an additional minority asset manager in the 2018-2019 fiscal year. We are working alongside our investment advisor to continue championing the expertise of minority asset managers and advocate for more diversity in the field, overall.

Grand Rapids Community Foundation adheres to the highest standards of financial stewardship and governance.

Our accountability and transparency to our donors ensures the resources entrusted to us serve our mission and achieve the greatest impact. Our quarterly communication with our donors and our annual investment meeting provide insight into our investment results and transparency into how our funds are invested. HOW TO APPLY FOR A GRANT

We award grants six times per year after review by our staff, the Fund for Community Good Advisory Committee and approval by the Board of Trustees.

We accept pre-applications and grant proposals through the year. Minimally, grant applications must serve people in Kent County, have IRS 501(c)(3) designation and work in the areas of education, arts and social engagement, the environment, health, neighborhoods or prosperity. Our guidelines detail other criteria for funding consideration.
