a lot as everyone around me was very creative. Even walking on the streets you’d notice individuality and people with unique styles of their own. No matter how weird you dressed, no one would judge you. That’s sort of different than Taiwan in the biggest way, as we’re more used to people telling you what to do, or worrying too much about what people think of you. In London, all of these constraints are non-existent. Life is so free there. I think that has been the biggest influence.

Tell us about yourself. I’ve been in the makeup industry for 8 years. Mainly I work in the fashion industry on fashion shows, editorials, commercials, and with designers. I’m also a consultant for a magazine, where I provide insight on global fashion trends and cosmetic products.

How did you get into the industry? As a kid, I’ve always liked different types of art. In university I naturally chose an Art major and studied graphics design as well. I’ve even directed my own documentary and took courses in fashion design. My interests are quite vast and I tend to like the new and am bored with the old. When I graduated I was still not very clear as to what I wanted to do. I liked London, and merely thought that I should go and study there. I chose the cheapest course I could find and flew to London and studied makeup for a year. It sounds insane, but that’s really how it happened. Makeup is the only thing in my life right now that I’ve actually stuck with. It’s a great interest of mine and it’s something I’m very determined and involved in.

What made you want to travel abroad? What’s it like overseas and how has it inspired you creatively? I really hated going to school. I actually don’t remember much of what I’ve learned in school. Going to London was sort of like an initiation for me. In the past, I rarely wore makeup and was truly an amateur. The environment in London influenced me

When you’re working, what do you pay the most attention to? Unless it’s for my own portfolio, I don’t believe that the makeup artist should be the main character, but rather teamwork to me is the most important. I think my priority is to have the ability to fully communicate with the team as everyone brings something important to the project. Clients tend to have market considerations in mind, whereas the photographer focuses on lighting and composition. The hair stylist and model may have their own ideas as well, so I think it’s very important that everyone is on the same page and understands the ultimate goal.

What do you enjoy most about your job? Trying new products. Clients send me a lot of samples and every time it’s like opening Christmas presents. I love playing with and testing new products. I like putting different products together and creating something new.

How is artistic or commercial makeup application different? Of-course it’s great to be able to do whatever you want to do, but most of the time you still have to have the business side of it in mind. Work is work. I don’t mind doing so called more commercial work, as long as the client and the team trusts me. I’m already very luck to be able to get booked and to have people like my work. Sometimes when I have time I’ll get together with other makeup artists to purely create; there has to be a story behind the creativity in order to have artistic value. Or else, to me it’s just technical application and nothing else.

How can a makeup artist develop a good eye for beauty and aesthetics? I like this question! Though I don’t have an answer! Thank you for not asking me about how to improve technical skill. My observation is that a lot of new makeup artists focus a lot on technique. They take alot of classes and buy alot of new products, but to me all of that is actually not that important. I believe what’s most important is whether you pay attention to global trends. Understanding why makeup masters from around the world choose certain looks, colors, and applications is very important. A makeup artist is essentially an “artist”; the idea behind it all is much more important than the technique.

Any tips for young makeup artists or makupe enthusiasts? This industry is fun but is also a difficult road to take. It’s like starting your own business, as we are our own brand. Good products are the basic elements, but you have to have a good personal image in order to have a successful brand. You have to invest in PR, marketing, and be prepared to be at a financial deficit. But don’t give up.

Did music fall in love with you or did you fall in love with music? I am pretty lucky to have found my calling early in life, regarding music it seems as if I was chosen by it, I believe I was destined to be tied to music in one way or another.

Between music, acting, and school, how do you manage your time? I just plan and go with it! To succeed in music or acting or anything else in life, you really need to put in the time, but often there is just not enough time to do everything. We have to learn to give and take. What I do is just lay everything out and choose what can or can not fit into my schedule, however, sometimes it’s best to just go with the flow.

Do you enjoy making movies? If one day you had to choose between music and acting how would you make the choice? At the age of 12 I was curious about “making movies” and now I’m in love with “acting” in movies. I really enjoy the environment of a film set and the tempo in which a film is made. A lot of people ask me whether or not I’d give up music now that I’m also an actor, but really that’s impossible because music to me is like food, a necessity!

You have such a happy and harmonious family, were you ever rebellious? I don’t think so! Sometimes I do feel I should have more of an ‘attitude’ instead of always being a “Yes Girl”.

Which one of your mom’s dishes do you like the best? Onion braised short ribs!

If you were not involved in music or acting, which other profession would you see yourself pursuing? An artist in the fashion industry!

You have such a busy life, what are your favorite hobbies? When I don’t have work lined up, I love to just get up and go do whatever my heart pleases, whether it be mountain climbing, cycling, or any type of sports.

Do you enjoy traveling? Yes! I hope to be able to backpack to different countries around the world before I get married!

身為導演我認為影片可以給觀眾the full experience of storytelling...

How did you realize your passion for film? How did you get into directing? Probably because I became overwhelmed with the power of music at an early age. And then my mom bought me a synthesizer, so I dabbled with synthesizing multiple tracks to create a bigger story of musical notes if you will. So this synthesis of elements can be enhanced further if you add the visual realm which is then filmmaking. So in filmmaking you can add music, photography, fashion, set design, dance and etc...just to portray a story. Story is tremendously important because it moves the human race.

What’s your film style? What do you hope to convey to the audience through your work? I like camera movement and POV. My favorite camera is a GoPro because you can put it anywhere and be really creative. I think my style is changing though. Because of Youtube and the fact that people want autheticity more than cinematic and polished style I am exploring more documentary ways of capturing a true experience. Also I think an ending to a story is really important because it portrays the creators deepest intention.

What’s most important to you, or what do you pay most attention to when coming up with a film idea?

The story is the most important to me. I pay great attention to the ending, especially ending with something interesting and leading to a discovery, is what I really like. Doesn’t matter if it’s a short or a full- length film, as long as the ending is good, then it will be liked, and shared, and thus seen! So it’s very important when choosing, for example, an image for the cover as even the title is extremely important.

What do you like to do when you’re not working? Family time baby! Its fun to spend time with your kids obviously, but making art is also time consuming. Both things are a pleasure to do, as both are gifts. Art is a gift to people receiving the art and time spent with kids definitely trumps any material gift you may give to your kids. So its a tough balance. But if we could eradicate the need for sleep we could maximize this life? I thought so, but as I am getting older, sleep is important, but enough tangents...

What suggestions would you give to young people in this digital era? Just start making a bunch of films, videos, photographs or whatever you are into. You can copy someone who inspires you too. I like that book, “Steal like an artist”...the lesson I take from that book though is at first you steal

the artist’s style and maybe external ways of expression. But after you assimilate the artist, you start to steal the artists way of thinking, and add your own style into that. Then you become the great artist linked to that prior artist’s artistic family tree. That probably made no sense in the space allowed to express the book, so, get the book. Other than that, just keep doing what you are passionate about or what you might think you are good at. According to Malcolm Gladwell you are never really good at anything unless you spend 10,000 hours engaging in that specific thing. So get to work!

It’s everything about one’s self and about the imperfections. There’s nothing cute about it, but it’s ultimately a part of you and a part of your life. The use of leather to sculpt the body and to symbolize the bracing products used to treat scoliosis. The headpiece is metal based and stands for dental braces. The colors we use here are mainly dark blue and yellow. The dark blue is meant to represent the negative feelings of oppression and constraint; the yellow represents a positivity that comes from regaining confidence when one starts accepting themselves for whom they are. It’s about you, me, them, and the acceptance of us.
