Welcome to... the Every One Every Day project!

Every One Every Day is a really ambitious idea, with local residents at its heart.

We know that Barking and Dagenham is a vibrant place to live and work, to grow up and grow older in. This project will make it easier to spend time with neighbours doing practical and useful everyday things together that we all enjoy.

Practical ‘hands on’ ideas – not lots of meetings.

Support for getting things going – no complicated processes.

Every One Every Day builds on the ‘hands on’ projects that people have been creating over the last few years in their own neighbourhoods. These types of projects welcome people from all walks of life.

We welcome you to suggest ideas you would like to grow together with friends and neighbours. This project will give the support you need to bring your ideas to life quickly.

These projects include:

The team will make things very simple - including:

Sharing skills, spaces and resources.

Families working and playing together.

•

Batch cooking and community meals.

Finding you useful spaces for the projects (kitchens, workshops, storage spaces etc).

•

Supplying materials and equipment for practical activities - no form filling for grants.

Food growing and tree planting.

By arranging insurance and health and safety.

Trading, making and repairing.

•

Holding festivals, workshops and business programmes.

Every One Every Day is going to be in the borough for a long time - at least 5 years and hopefully longer, and we hope to support residents to develop lots of projects and businesses.

Our plans to grow across the borough!

We have had an incredible response from residents since launching in the borough last November! We have over 40 projects in planning already - many people will be sharing their ideas with you through the exciting 8 week programme that has been created in the last couple of months.

Please do take a look at the programme — there is something happening nearly every day in the areas near the first two shops. Everything is co-created with residents, and we are sure you will be inspired by the range of ideas as well as the energy being shown by the amazing people living and working in Barking and Dagenham.

But we have hardly started yet!

AUTUMN 2018

We will be opening 2 new shops later this year - one in the Becontree/Valence area and another in Chadwell Heath. This will likely be sometime between July and September, depending on shop availability. Our fifth shop is scheduled to open in Thames in Autumn 2019.

We also plan to open a free co-working makerspace later this year to support residents with new businesses and co-operatives. We will keep you posted on developments!

With the help and support of residents we are also opening up two additional free practical resources in the borough.

The 1st space is the Pop Up Workshop in one of our rooms in Ripple Road, Barking. Thanks to a very generous loan of tools, from a local family, we are creating a small workshop for residents to use for their making and repairing projects.

The 2nd space is a Community Kitchen, also at the rear of our shop in Ripple Road, Barking. This kitchen is designed for cooking in large groups and will be available for local residents to use at no charge. This space is also suitable for community meals.

The 3rd is a photography Light Room above the shop in Church Elm Lane, Dagenham. Residents and the team are transforming a small room into a space for taking photos and videos - in particular, products that people might want to start selling.

You can come along and see these spaces as they develop during our regular shop opening days - but there are also some activities in this programme to stimulate your ideas for projects that can make use of these spaces.

Someone in your street keeps chickens in their back garden. Residents in the street supply the chickens with suitable food waste in exchange for regular fresh eggs!

Create and submit to the DIY Film Festival which will showcase films about Barking and Dagenham created by residents.

For budding film makers or anyone who wants to try their hand at filming, learn the basics of filmmaking with the local residents at the Neighbourhood Film Studio.

COMMUNITY SINGS

Get together, learn a song from different places around the world introduced and led by a local resident. No experience required!

TRADE SCHOOL Trade School is an alternative, self-organised school that runs on barter, where participants bring simple items requested by the informal teacher.

Anyone can teach something they are skilled at, or passionate about.

Great Cook Caramel Chicken

Great Cook Variations Baby Cook Baby Cook sessions are batch cooking for baby and toddler meals. Making batches of baby food is such a great way of making home made food for your baby - and it’s a great way to meet other parents. Over the 2 hours parents take it in turns to both cook and look after the babies that come along.

Teen Cook Teen Cook sessions are batch cooking after school for young people who would like to prepare a weekly meal for their families. Perhaps you have very busy parents, or simply want to show your family appreciation by cooking for them each week. Teen Cook sessions are led by teenagers too. Everyone can cook at least one thing!

A place for all ages to share stories that capture your imagination and take part in fun activities in a relaxed community environment.

Everyone loves a great story. Why not come along to these fun and playful Story Box sessions, and take part in creative activities that are linked to a variety of children’s books, bringing stories to life.

These interactive sessions will happen outside of school hours. Join us for fun activities in a relaxed community environment, where you and your children can meet other families.

There will be a different activity taking place for each story: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Railway Children, Wizard of Oz and Oliver Twist.

Whether you come to all or just one, you are also invited to our Story Box community lunch on the 11th April, where you can bring a dish or snacks and share delicious food with your neighbours.

About the project starters Roseann has lived in Barking and Dagenham for over 20 years, moving here from California. She is a home educating parent who loves telling and reading stories and poetry.

Catia has studied and worked with children in educational settings. She homeschools her three children, and has found fun ways of teaching through play. Catia will share some of the activities she and her children found along the way.

PLAY STREET Play Streets are springing up across the borough!

Since launching in November, two Play Streets have already started, with several more in the planning - would you and other families near you like to start a regular Play Street?

What are Play Streets?

Play Streets temporarily stop traffic in a residential street, cul-de-sac or square, creating an opportunity for children to play safely outside.

Parents and neighbours host sessions by closing the street and bringing out toys and play equipment to share.

By temporarily stopping traffic for a while, and inviting everyone out, we can enjoy our streets together near our own front doors.

How does the Every One Every Day team help you get started?

We try to make starting projects with your neighbours as easy and quick as possible. We help you to talk to your neighbours, arranging meetings to discuss the idea, sometimes doing some gentle door knocking. We help with setting dates, support you making posters and promoting generally, and even have some small budgets for some shared play equipment. We love supporting projects and do everything with you!

The Every One Every Day team will be attending both the Play Streets listed below — please come along and chat to us on the day if you would like to find out more about how to set one up in your street.

Come ome and join us for a day of fun and meet new neighbours. The aim of the Play Street is to give members of the local community an opportunity to get together to promote building relationships between different cultures and ages, as well as giving children a chance to play safely.

Ola, a local resident and qualified football coach, always played football on the streets, in his local park and in football cages with friends. He got to spend time with them in a relaxed environment whilst doing something he loved.

He has created the Street Ball project to get people of all ages excited about kickabouts. These fun and lively sessions include Walking Football, Family Football, Girls Footy and Boys Footy... which one is right for you?

Street Ball is inspired by South American street football, and futsal which is played on a hard court with a weighted ball.

Ola then came across an international campaign which focused on football tricks, freestyling and music and was inspired to take this culture and infuse it into his local community so people could take ownership of their free time in their spaces again.

SECRET GARDEN Imagine a beautiful shared space for gathering, playing, growing and relaxing.

This is exactly what local people are creating - we would love you to join us!

At our Festival of Everyone, we were lucky enough to be able to build a greenhouse with local residents. The construction took place outside the Barking Learning Centre in the town square, and passers by got involved by drilling, hammering and making tea. Following the successful completion of the build, we were able to donate the structure to Gascoigne Primary School.

We got in touch with the school to see how we can team up, and we learned about their ‘Secret Garden’, which is a space they have on the school grounds. We would like to collaborate with and invite families and friends of the school to support the design of the green space.

Residents in the street supply the chickens with suitable food waste in exchange for regular fresh eggs.

Rock Paper Scissors is a new collective for makers and aspiring traders in Barking and Dagenham.

The aim is to work together as a network, to reduce barriers and risk and to start earning a living through making and selling. The collective will allow people with early ideas to test the market - working with other fun and enthusiastic people!

About the project starters

The neighbourhood film studio is a project that has been created with this in mind. It will support budding film-makers to make and enjoy films in the borough. Residents have created learning sessions where they will share some film making techniques to get you ready to create and submit to the DIY Film Festival which will showcase films about Barking and Dagenham.

We are 3 local residents, keen to support film making and sharing in the borough. With the upcoming possibility of Barking and Dagenham having its own large film studio, we started this project to support local people in getting more involved in film and having a place for people to enjoy local creations.

No previous experience required.

About the project starter Sade Bright is a long time resident of Barking and Dagenham. The Uni Project

Men’s Sheds are community owned and run workshops – permanently resourced with tools and materials for building and making. They offer a space for men to gather and talk, get involved in their community through practical projects. Yes, there are also Women in Sheds.

Fear Less. Build More. That’s the motto of Girls Garage - a design and building program and dedicated workspace for girls aged 9 - 17.

Programmes equip girls with tools to build anything they can imagine alongside one another and their communities.

Library of Things is a space in West Norwood where you can borrow useful items like DIY tools, gardening things, kitchenware, camping kit etc.

There are similar tool sharing projects across the world, creating more sustainability.

The Uni Project is a portable reading room. Sharing books, learning and improving public spaces. Special cubes are curated by people who have a passion and depth of knowledge on a specific topic. The Uni Librarians mix and match the cubes depending on where they go.

An opportunity for people to take part in a fun and unusual activity - dismantling everyday objects and playing with or building components.

Children get a sense of how things are made while parents or grandparents with skills are able to share their knowledge.

A co-operative workshop space that diverts valuable waste materials away from landfill and supports our local community (resdients, artists, businesses) to use them to create prodcuts, art and enterprises.

Free meeting places and they’re all about repairing things (together).

You will find tools and materials to help you make any repairs you need. On clothes, furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles, crockery, toys, etc.

The Bike Workshop runs classes in how to repair your bike. Rather than offer a free maintenance service, they train people in new skills to keep their bikes on the road, and offer use of specialist tools.

Have you ever dreamt of becoming a beekeeper?

Maria, a local resident living on the Gascoigne Estate has dreamt about becoming a beekeeper for many years - and so the Bee School project has been created!

It’s all going to kickoff with a free half day course in April.

Following the introduction session we hope to invite a large group of residents to take part in a more structured programme of learning, to become beekeepers over a few weeks in the summer. We hope that people who are interested in looking after their own colony will be excited by these new opportunities and will sign up to come along!

About the project starter Maria has spent some years working outdoors on a children’s garden project and growing her own vegetables and has developed her interest discovering the important role of the bees in a sustainable environment.

She became fascinated and quite interested to not only explore their lives, but also understanding the importance of what is happening within the colony.

About the beekeeping tutor Eric Beaumont has kept bees in London for 15 years and works locally to raise awareness of beekeeping and wider environmental issues.

What will happen on the day This workshop will give you an overview of the craft of beekeeping.

Experienced beekeepers will cover the fundamental requirements for bee and hive management, and will give you a real feel for the art of beekeeping and a good understanding of whether or not this is craft you wish to pursue.

Protective beekeeping suits, gloves and all other equipment will be provided.

Sunflower Street Imagine the streets of Barking and Dagenham filled with colourful sunflowers. In front gardens, outside shops, on street corners - wherever there is a small patch of earth.

Come and pick up a free sunflower seed kit, learn how to sow them so you can take them home, care for them and watch them grow. This will be followed by a community planting session in June to create a spectacular and vibrant sunflower trail through Barking and Dagenham.

You looked through the paper, and you are wondering ‘is this for me?’

The answer is Yes, it is for you!

We called the project Every One Every Day - and we mean it!

Regardless of your starting point, Every One Every Day has been designed with all your life circumstances in mind. We are really good at making it easy for people to get involved in activity that they enjoy and benefit from. It’s our thing.

Every One Every Day recognises that most people have busy lives.

Between work, raising children, caring for older relatives and keeping households going, people need participation opportunities that fit with all the other things going on.

Over time we aim to help create hundreds of opportunities each month.

There will be a wide variety of activity. These activities will be near where you live, they will be short and at different times of day, they will need all kinds of skills and ideas … and most importantly, they will be open, warm and welcoming to every single person in Barking and Dagenham.

We will help find a neighbour or friend to accompany you if you feel a bit shy at first.

We will find a neighbour who can translate for you if English isn’t your first language.

We will ensure full access and support to activities if you are experiencing health/access issues.

We will talk things through with you if you have limited online access.

The projects are designed to benefit you directly Every One Every Day is not a volunteering programme. This is about neighbourhoods made by everyone, for everyone, and on an equal footing.

We work with residents to help create projects that directly benefit you, your neighbours, friends and family. These benefits might include learning new things; saving you money or time; increasing confidence, happiness and health; making new friends and creating a greater sense of community; all the way through to developing ideas for new livelihoods or community businesses.

Whether you decide to get involved in bringing a green space to life, or get involved in projects for cooking, making, sharing, learning or playing, these things will all add up to make everyday life better for everyone, simply by doing more things you might do every day with your friends and neighbours, instead of alone.

Start a project from scratch Have a burning idea, come and talk to us, or attend one of the weekly workshops. We will help you design and test your idea, gather support, get hold of equipment and materials, promote your project, and arrange insurances etc.

Join This is Our Story network Become a social reporter, photographer and researcher for the project. Tell the story of the Every One Every Day project from your unique perspective as a participant and resident. You don’t have to have equipment or experience, we will support you with all these things.

Come and work in the free public co-working space when it opens.

Co-working spaces are great to meet people who are also developing business ideas, or freelancing.

Barking and Dagenham will have one of the only free public co-working spaces for residents. There will be a whole series of events and programmes that could help your work to flourish.

Come and talk to us any time during opening hours - which will be posted on the website.

Take part in one of the everyday projects

Suppers

Growing, making, learning, playing - things that fit with your everyday life. Have an hour after work, a couple of hours on the weekend. Things that children can enjoy with you‌

Regular potluck suppers near you - come along and meet people! Bring a friend!

Join the neighbourhood Welcoming Committee

Begin a Starter Project These are very popular projects that have been tried and tested already - like Play Streets, Public Office or Great Cooks.

Would you and some friends like to start one very close to where you live?

Help people feel at home and make new friends as soon as they move to your area.

Apply to join a business programme Want to take your business ideas to the next level and need some specialist support to test and grow them? We will be running several programmes each year, let us know now what you are interested in and help shape these programmes.

Work for the project We will have a variety of working, learning and researching opportunities including: work experience, apprenticeships, internships and full and part-time posts. Keep an eye on the website for new things as they come up.

Connect with our industry and education partners Join the Community Advisory Group If you want to help us understand how the project is going, or have local insights, think about joining the Community Advisory Group. You don’t have to be part of an existing project or group, individual residents welcome.

We will be developing strong links with local businesses, schools, colleges and universities, so that if during your participation in projects you develop skills or interests, we can support you to develop further. We will be working with our partners to create more work experience, apprenticeships and employment.
