INTRODUCTION Organisational Membership to the Every One Every Day platform has emerged as a key component of the platform’s approach to creating positive outcomes in the borough.

Two years on from its launch, Organisational Members of the platform now number over 100, and the platform itself has been redesigned to welcome, accommodate and incorporate many of the varying ways in which Organisational Members’ needs from a supportive platform differ from those of residents.

Looking backwards at the early phases of the project from today, it seems strange that such a core element of the platform should have emerged as an idea fairly late in the development of the approach and well after the concept of resident membership had been fully designed and implemented.

While we were always conscious of the importance of integrating the platform with local organisations and existing systems, our original approach to doing so essentially prototyping specific approaches with individual organisations - taught us much, but proved slow.

Organisational Membership was developed to provide a simple way for local organisations to benefit from the resources of the platform without the need for complex, design-led approaches to systemic integration. The approach has been greatly strengthened by a broader borough-wide context which has seen the development of other initiatives including the BD Collective and BD Giving.

As this report shows, Organisational Members themselves deliver a dizzying array of impacts, through a wide variety of approaches, models and organisational designs. In that sense, this is very much their report, and the credit for the positive changes in the borough as a result of their actions is 100% theirs. In this report we hope to share what we have learnt from our work with them about how the right social infrastructure, made accessible to those who make impact in a place, can create broad-based and multi-layered impact for the benefit of local people.

WHO ARE AGE UK & DI’S DIAMONDS AND WHAT DO YOU DO? Age UK Havering Barking and Redbridge is an organisation that runs activities for residents, male and female, aged 50 and over in these three boroughs, as well as in other surrounding boroughs. We currently have 700 members and the events have mainly been held locally in Romford, Rainham, Hornchurch and Upminster, but we have some group activities in Barking & Dagenham and we hope to have more after lockdown.

Di’s Diamonds has been going for around 10 years and is a ‘female friendship group’, under the umbrella of Age UK.So the men don’t feel left out, the activities are geared towards things that the male members would also enjoy and be interested inThe aim of Di’s Diamonds and Diamond Geezers is to tackle loneliness and isolation amongst older people and to encourage connection, engagement and creativity in later life.

During the pandemic, Age UK turned its focus to reaching out to members over the phone, making sure they had the essentials they needed to shield at home and helping them with finding support for any health (physical/mental) issues they were facing. Age UK has a care management team that are there to support those most in need.

WORKING WITH WOMEN AND MEN AGED 50 AND OVER

Di’s Diamonds become an Organisational Member just before the pandemic hit, which meant that access to spaces wasn’t allowed at the time. When the first lockdown started, the priority was to get in touch with members to make sure that everyone was physically and mentally ok.

As Every One Every Day moved to online sessions and created the Online Platform, we also moved online by creating a Facebook group (although initially the uptake was slow due to anxiety over technology) Initially we weren’t sure how to use online meetings technology - and neither did most of our members. We were interested in using Zoom but were unsure what the uptake would be, and so at first it was difficult, but with the support of Every One Every Day we were able to trial using a Zoom account.

It started with an invitation to attend Every One Every Day’s online sessions like Tea and Toast so that we as a team and some members of Di’s Diamonds could learn how to use Zoom and become more familiar with it. Then Every One Every Day set up Zoom sessions with their professional account for our private use so the group could trial the technology before committing to it.

HOW DID THE ORGANISATION FIRST FIND OUT ABOUT EVERY ONE EVERY DAY AND HOW HAVE YOU INTERACTED WITH THE PROJECT SO FAR?

Every One Every Day was incredibly helpful and supportive as we transitioned our service from a community-based one to entirely online. They were always happy to answer any queries we had. Having them in some of the meetings meant that our members got to know them too and were invited to other events on the platform.

Not all of our members have digital devices so the zoom sessions were perfect as they could phone in too.

Once everyone was comfortable, we created a ‘team’ on the Every One Every Day Platform.

This way they could get involved with our sessions that we promoted there but also see other sessions hosted by residents across the borough.

We had lots of feedback from members with many of them saying that they found the sessions to be very friendly, inclusive and inspiring.

It was also mentioned that the team members were very supportive with technology, which was extremely important for the members.

Zoom opened up new doors for residents that had disconnected due to care commitments,mobility issues, and so on, and, it also created new opportunities to connect to people from other places across London.

Our members have really embraced their newfound digital knowledge, and, poetry sessions, book club sessions, crochet and knit sessions and even painting sessions. Some of the residents involved with the Every One Every Day project even joined some of the Di’s Diamonds sessions and it’s the cross pollination of the groups that has really become a highlight for this time.

GOING FORWARD, WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO COME OUT OF THE RELATIONSHIPS CREATED? IS THERE ANYTHING THE ORGANISATION IS LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST?

perfect opportunity to gain more members by holding sessions that are more local to residents and the networking opportunities with other organisations in the borough will also benefit the goals and aims of all parties.

The collaboration between us and Every One Every Day during this time has already proven to have been very fruitful in the sense of the amount of learning and knowledge shared. We have lost touch with many of our members during the lockdown due to them not having access to digital equipment. We really look forward to being able to host sessions in the Every One Every Day spaces for our members, and to also make the most of the Warehouse - with all the wonderful things that can be done in the maker spaces!

We are grateful for the opportunities Every One Every Day has given our Barking and Dagenham Members to join in Community Activities and look forward to the growing as we ease out of lockdown.

ALPHA FEMALE ACADEMY A FASHION DESIGN SCHOOL TO HELP BRIDGE THE GAP OF INEQUALITY IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY.

The founder of Alpha Female Academy, Joyce, set up the organisation in 2018 to work with BAME women from low socio-economic backgrounds who have a strong desire to either start their own businesses or work for major fashion houses.

Joyce’s passion for fashion started a long time ago. She recalls how at the age of 16 she independently travelled to Southall to buy a sewing machine. Even though she started by breaking needle after needle trying to sew leather textiles, she knew that she wanted to build a career in fashion.

Joyce first started working in the fashion industry on the production side and then moved on to a creative side where she would create fashion garments for music video production. She noticed that she was one of the few people of colour and it made her question why there were not more women from BAME backgrounds in the industry.

She knew women with a lot of talent but maybe not the exact skill set so she wanted to see what she could do to help with that, “I knew there was something inside me that had to push forth!".

Alpha Female Academy was soon set up with a goal to help bridge the gap of inequality in the fashion industry. When choosing the organisation’s name, Joyce asked herself “What do I stand for?” and “Who am I?”. She knew that she loved making clothes and how wearing different clothes gave her different energies. She realised that to be able to love and help others around her, she had to learn to love herself first.

The name Alpha Female was born from this desire to strengthen herself and empower other women.

WORKING WITH YOUNG PEOPLE AND WOMEN

Since launching Joyce has worked with 50 women (and a few men) with recently two of the women going on to fashion college and university, for whom it would have been a struggle if they had not found the guidance and support from her organisation. Alpha Female Academy enables people to upskill and build confidence as well as creating support networks.

After Black Lives Matter events last summer, Joyce realised how the conversations she had started with her organisation were important: “It was so heavy, but in terms of impact, it made me realise that what I was talking about in the early stages, we were doing the right thing and now taking it on another level. It impacted our view in a positive way because it reassured us on what we were doing. It also led us to work with some high profile people in universities on how to educate without bias.

DISCOVERING EVERY ONE EVERY DAY THROUGH ROCK PAPER SCISSORS

leather wallets which inspired her to revisit her love for leather work.

Based in Barking, Joyce first found out about Every One Every Day when she walked past the Rock Paper Scissors pop up shop at Becontree station. Although she had been living in the Borough for the past 12 years, she had never really experienced a sense of community or creativity and would normally go to work and back home from Central London without spending much time locally. So when she saw the pop up shop, she was really intrigued and excited. Speaking to the Collaborative Business Programmes team about her love for fashion, she was told about Everyone’s Warehouse and all the equipment she could find there.

From there, Joyce participated in the Design Make Sell Collaborative Business Programme and was able to test trade leather bags at the Rock Paper Scissors pop up shop at Barking station. As she had already worked in pop up shops before, she had a bit more experience than other participants. But with Rock Paper Scissors she found a sense of community, a chance to be able to share skills and found that she had a cross set of skills with others which helped build new connections. We have lost touch with many of our members during the lockdown due to them not having access to digital equipment. We really look forward to being able to host sessions in the Every One Every Day spaces for our members, and to also make the most of the Warehouse - with all the wonderful things that can be done in the maker spaces!

When she first stepped into Everyone’s Warehouse, Joyce remembers that it felt so different from previous experiences she had growing up without a lot of brown and black girls around.

She attended a first session run by 90 year-old resident Solomon - who she fondly calls Uncle - for the launch Festival at Everyone’s Warehouse.

Joyce became an Organisational Member with Alpha Female Academy. Through the membership, she was able to record high quality timelapse video content for her future online fashion platform in Everyone’s Warehouse. She also mentions how the amount of equipment available in the space helped her and her organisation sewing machines, overlocker, embroidery machine and the huge cutting table!

Drawing from her participant experience of business programmes as well as her professional skills, Joyce also became a lead tutor on collaborative business programme Capsule Collection. Capsule Collection was launched in January 2020 for residents to learn how to make a clothing range from scratch. 26 local residents joined to learn skills in sewing, pattern cutting and much more before the programme was put on hold due to the pandemic.

Speaking about her general experience of Every One Every Day, Joyce is thankful to have met so many other residents with similar interests such as leather textiles, pattern cutting and fashion but also other creative fields. “It’s all inspiring, friendly and warm.” And she calls Everyone’s Warehouse her community - another home.

Joyce is now full of ideas for the future. As well as launching her online fashion platform soon, she hopes to have Funday Sundays at Everyone’s Warehouse to host free sewing sessions and continue to share her skills and knowledge with other residents in the community.

As she simply puts it “as long as you can sew straight and turn a corner, you’re halfway there!”

Every Person Is Capable (EPIC) combines arts and culture to uplift individuals and communities to improve mental wellbeing, discover forms of selfexpression and to share tools to become more self-aware.

The organisation officially started in June 2019 and has received funding from the National Lottery, Mayor of London and London Community Fund to run various projects in London including its flagship event called the EPIC Jam. EPIC’s hope for the future is to continue to grow sustainably and keep planting seeds in people, giving them hope for a brighter future.

WORKING WITH EVERYONE

“We have run a number of urban arts events including outside Wembley Stadium and Stockwell Hall of Fame. Each one has involved using the elements of HipHop culture in a positive way, with socially uplifting rap and emceeing, graffiti art and break dancing.”

This positivity runs through all they do and, whilst they’ve not been able to do as much in-person work during COVID-19, the Everyone’s Warehouse sessions have been a real solace alongside the poetry, dance and art workshops they’ve been running online called EPIC Expression.

The breakdancing fits within a wider project they run called the Man Down Project, Vish explains:

As an Organisational Member, EPIC uses the Learning Lab, in Everyone’s Warehouse, for breakdancing sessions every 2 weeks and we spoke to Co-Director, and Barking and Dagenham resident, Vishal Narayan to hear how it’s going.

“We run a men’s mental health arm, called the Man Down Project. We discuss personal issues with men and break the rhetoric of toxic masculinity.”

“I am the Co-Director of Every Person Is Capable, a C.I.C that delivers on three main points of service in the Third Sector. The way I got in touch with and got to know Every One Every Day is through teaching at Barking and Dagenham College. I was supporting some interns there for a period last academic year.”

This vital work is all the more important at the moment and it has been wonderful to see Everyone’s Warehouse being put to this use. But their ambitions aren’t solely limited to Barking and Dagenham - look out for more EPIC projects in collaboration with international organisations in Nepal, Brazil and Austria in the coming months!

The college students got stuck into all sorts of activities from the Urban Garden through to the workspaces and in the process Vish got to know the Warehouse well. For him to be able to plug his current work with EPIC back into the space has been a real thrill. EPIC was founded by Savan Shah in June 2019 and Vish outlined some of the exciting milestones they’ve already achieved:

BRITISH RED CROSS CONNECTING COMMUNITIES

TACKLING LONELINESS BY SUPPORTING ADULT RESIDENTS OF BARKING AND DAGENHAM TO CONNECT TO THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITY.

The British Red Cross is a UK and international humanitarian organisation that has been running for 150 years, set up to help people experiencing emergency situations and crisis, access support and connections within their communities to tackle issues such as loneliness, social isolation and mental health issues.

HOW IT STARTED The British Red Cross decided to start a pilot programme in 2017 called Connecting Communities in the UK and more locally in Barking and Dagenham after accessing research that outlined the increasing health risk social isolation and loneliness bring to people in the western world, especially in the UK. The Connecting Communities pilot programme was a 12-week support service for residents over the age of 18 to help remove the barriers that prevented them from connecting with their communities. The programme supported service participants to attend community spaces and events happening around the borough to broaden their networks and confidence. The team was made up of three staff members and a few volunteers all called Community Connectors, who were familiar with each area and the opportunities within the borough.

When a Connector met a service participant, they would identify the barriers that they would want to overcome. Then the connectors would

look into the community to see what groups, activities and spaces there were and form the bridges so that the participant could create their own journey out of loneliness. Rather than thinking of the programme as a service, the Connectors liked to think of it as a collaboration.

They would focus on the participants’ strengths, find out what they wanted to do or rediscover, then collaboratively make a plan.

‘We helped them organically find those links to participate in those groups and activities.’

MEETING EVERY ONE EVERY DAY Chrissy was one of the Connectors at Connecting Communities. She had previously volunteered in Barking and Dagenham and the neighbouring Boroughs and she found out about the Every One Every Day project through a loneliness and mental health meeting in The Ripple Centre. She spoke with a team member and looked through one of the Every One Every Day programme newspapers. She saw the diversity of sessions hosted by residents and skills being shared and thought these were all wonderful opportunities for her service participants to get involved in.

She remembers saying: “That’s amazing! I have people that want to access spaces that you’re telling me about.”

DANA REPRESENTED THE PROGRAMME AND SHARED HER EXPERIENCE AT THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT.

After the initial meeting, Chrissy started introducing the spaces to the residents that were part of the Connecting Communities programme. She would take the service participants to a cafe nearby the Every One Every Day shops so they had the space to explore the newspaper and also be given the opportunity to choose if they wanted to visit the shops - it really worked well for building their confidence.

personal development. Most recently during the pandemic she has volunteered her time in the BD CAN project where she was preparing food packages for vulnerable people within the Borough and organising other volunteers that were also part of the project.

“I went to the Dagenham shop and thought it was brilliant. I took a newspaper and gave it to a service user who joined me to get a tour of the shop and she started signing up for projects straight away.”

Collaborating with Connecting Communities also brought some learnings for Every One Every Day. The Red Cross team had connections with the Neighbourhood team in the shop spaces and would sometimes call ahead to let the team know if there was any specific support that the team could give to make the participant feel really welcome, particularly if the resident was coming on their own.

IMPACT ON SERVICE PARTICIPANTS One of the first residents that Chrissy introduced to Every One Every Day, Dana, initially joined to build confidence, combat social isolation and loneliness. Dana attended one of the Tea and Toast sessions with Chrissy at the Church Elm Lane shop and then started attending sessions by herself in the shop, and soon also discovered Everyone’s Warehouse.

Dana started to host sessions like a games session in Old Dagenham Park. In a matter of a few months she had established herself within the shop spaces, had a group of friends she met regularly and learnt skills from and then, went on to take part in the Design, Make, Sell Collaborative Business Programme and created her own product line to sell in the Rock Paper Scissors pop up shop.

Following this incredible journey, she even became the spokesperson for the Red Cross in Parliament where she spoke about her journey, the support she had and how it helped her further her 28

Chrissy says: “Her journey is exactly what we hope for, for everyone that we work with.”

Chrissy remembers: “I liked that it wasn’t set up as an office, it wasn’t clinical. Each space is different and feels homely. It was nice that you could make your own cup of tea and it had a real community vibe.”

The Every One Every Day team also organised check-ins with the Community Connectors where both organisations shared information about how to continually support the work they did in the shop spaces and make residents feel more welcomed in the spaces. At the beginning of new programmes, the Every One Every Day team also went over the newspapers with Connectors so that they got to know the various opportunities to pass along to their participants. This then developed into an invitation for all Organisational Members to learn about the upcoming programmes and have a presentation of the newspaper.

“I LIKED THAT IT WASN’T SET UP AS AN OFFICE, IT WASN’T CLINICAL. EACH SPACE IS DIFFERENT AND FEELS HOMELY. IT WAS NICE THAT YOU COULD MAKE YOUR OWN CUP OF TEA AND IT HAD A REAL COMMUNITY VIBE.” Through both projects residents were able to gain self worth, experience kindness and discover friendships by sharing skills and learning, having the opportunity to meet like minded people and create connections with people that live locally to them.

“Every One Every Day really helped! Projects like ours rely on what is out there in the community, so having access to Every One Every Day makes our job a lot better.”

The Connecting Communities programme came to an end in 2019 but the British Red Cross is still working to reduce loneliness and social isolation in and around Barking and Dagenham. For example during the pandemic, the Every One Every Day team was able to signpost the organisation’s digital scheme to residents who didn’t have access to online services.

As for Chrissy, she now works for Independent Age on a project called Reconnections, which also aims at reducing loneliness and social isolation, for residents over the age of 65. With her experience of collaborating with Every One Every Day, Chrissy really hopes that Reconnections’ service participants can have a similar experience within the participation platform.

Growing Communities has been transforming the relationship between Londoners and their food for the past 20 years. Connecting local farmers with hungry customers, Growing Communities have had a presence in Barking and Dagenham since 2012 when they were granted a 10 year lease on the site by Barking & Dagenham Council.

Kerry Rankine is the project lead for Growing Communities’ FoodNet programme based in the area around Dagenham Farm. In late 2020, grant funding was secured from the National Lottery Community Fund and, in partnership with London Borough of Barking & Dagenham’s Community Solutions team and William Bellamy Children’s Centre (WBCC), to launch FoodNet. Kerry pointed to the history Growing Communities already had in the area as being vital to the success of the project. Beyond Growing in Dagenham and initiatives hosted at Dagenham Farm, they have also connected with children centres, food banks and projects with migrant women and young people.

Through these relationships they were already very aware of challenges being felt by many locally around a lack of food and access to good food coupled with feelings of isolation.

Knowing the strength of their own network, Kerry felt that they were confident that they could provide food for people based on healthy eating - connecting people in the process.

Delivering all these outcomes during the pandemic, without connecting physically, proved to be a huge logistical challenge. It was vitally important to make it safe for participants and volunteers as the food packages were delivered to people suffering with covid-19 quite the conundrum.

However, by the end of the project, just under 500 individual meals were delivered and created, equating to one meal a week for each individual in a household. How people were going to cook was also considered with some recipients living in temporary accommodation and only having access to restricted kitchen appliances. All recipes were designed to make sure that they could be cooked solely with a microwave and kettle.

“We met Every One Every Day Chief Executive, Tessy Britton, when Participatory City was first setting up in Dagenham. We have an organic farm and volunteer programme there and since then we have had a useful and collaborative relationship. A year or two ago, we were able to take on the Shed - the warehouse space in Everyone’s Warehouse on Thames Road in order to set up our not-for-profit food distribution warehouse that supplies fresh produce from the farmers we work with to community led veg schemes around London.”

This ‘Better Food Shed’ initiative has been cohabiting in Everyone’s Warehouse ever since, supplying food for an Open Project Night enabling residents to sample some of the wonderful organic produce they handle every week. Deedee Aitken is assistant manager of the Better Food Shed shared these thoughts:

“Everyone’s Warehouse has been the perfect environment for the Shed to thrive during our first couple of years of trading - a welcoming, inclusive and supportive space. We often share tools, machinery and equipment and are always keen to help each other out, where possible. We appreciate the opportunity to share a space with like-minded individuals who put community participation at the top of their agenda.”

Her colleague Danny Fisher went on to add: “Quite simply there may be no Better Food Shed without the support of Participatory City and their commitment to our project. Since reaching out to us at a critical stage of our development, they have gone out of their way to offer us the use of their space, help us advertise through their networks for employees, share their facilities and equipment, and give us a huge amount of support in general.”

This level of collaboration and support has seen Growing Communities form a fantastic presence in the area and reach many local residents sharing an ethos of healthy, affordable food. This isn’t reserved for raw food either! Kerry also spoke about the benefits of being able to make use of the kitchen facilities in the warehouse for food prep for the FoodNet project. She noted that “our cook Shelagh has been able to use the space - which is very helpful as it is in the same building as the Shed. The space is enabling us to scale up the project.” This sharing and collaborating in the space is what Everyone’s Warehouse is designed for and it has been wonderful to see Growing Communities make use of it in different ways as they continue to do their fabulous work across the borough.

Youth Spot Bar is an activity centre hub which runs outdoors sports, tailored games, projects and workshops for children and young people from 8 to 25 years old.

The activities range from learning how to cook, to support for young people with business idea, with opportunities to develop the skills needed to bring these ideas to life. The main aims are to create lots of local activities, where children and young people can come and do things together, and to help the community facing financial difficulties in Barking and Dagenham.

The organisation is also targeting other deprived areas like Hackney and Newham with the aim to connect these boroughs and expand young people’s opportunities.

Youth Spot Bar started in 2018 after a year with with high levels of knife crime. Amanda, founder of the organisation, explains: “That was a hit point for me, having my daughter growing up in this society and other people that I know and my background working in childcare. I had lived in the borough for over 10 years so when that happened it was my lightbulb for Youth Spot Bar and I just decided that the youth needed something to do, an outlet, somewhere constructive, somewhere that would stop them from going on the streets and taking up crime that are taking people’s lives, including their own!”

When Youth Spot Bar first started, the team would go on the streets to meet young people where they knew they congregated.

Now, young people come through various organisations like Every One Every Day, Mums on a Mission, Barking and Dagenham Youth Dance

and boundaries, amongst others. Young volunteers of the organisation also invite their friends to join in and help spread the word.

Youth Spot Bar is now made up of 2 business partners, Amanda and Rachel, along with 6 young volunteers who together run various projects: • Unified Action is a project in partnership with Youth Sports Trust about empowering young people to be young ambassadors in the community, taking leadership roles in the organisations that they work in or volunteer for.

• The Independent Traders Co-op is a business programme for adults and young people drawing from Amanda’s own experience of the Every One Every Day Design, Make, Sell (Collaborative Business ) programme.

• Skating Active is a project that is still awaiting funding but the programme has already been designed with different themes around skating, including teaching children and adults to learn how to skate and hosting disco nights.

Through this variety of projects, Amanda aims to sustain people’s resilience and ability to make positive change for themselves.

HOW IT STARTED She wanted to organise a sport event to bring young people from different areas together and was going around different venues to look for support. She stumbled across the Every One Every Day shop in Church Elm Lane and entered after seeing the inviting shop window display.

and thinking “this is really what the borough needs! I felt like it was a Godsend when that happened”. The team encouraged her to start something on a small scale first where she could trial and test ideas.

This was the starting point for something bigger, Amanda recalls: “From there it just took off! I was having constant meetings, coming to network groups, talking to other people in the borough, I got real support from the Business Programme team.”

Amanda started hosting events in programmes with Every One Every Day, some linking in with local schools and some in outdoor local parks, inviting the wider community to join.

was ready to go. Amanda remembers a meeting she had with Tessy, founder of Every One Every Day: “She saw the ambition, she saw the drive in me”.

Amanda was one of the 1st to want to use the spaces for certain members of the community ßonly and Every One Every Day was responsive to this and created a process, with her input, which could work. Amanada received the relevant training and became a key-holder of the Ripple Road shop which meant she could use it out of the normal opening times when the team were not there. This allowed much more flexibility for Amanda and her team as the young people were more available during the weekends and the location was perfect!

“It just evolved from there for us” Amanada also started receiving support in how to set up her organisation from the Every One Every Day team. It wasn’t long before Youth Spot Bar

The sessions became regular in both the Ripple Road shop and the Marks Gate shop, on average, each session attracted between 10 and 20 young people.

Amanda particularly appreciated being able to reach out to the team with any difficulties she faced, and valued the team being flexible to fit her needs as a small organisation.

FROM COLLABORATIVE BUSINESS TO INDEPENDENT TRADE CO-OP Amanda was also involved in Collaborative Business Programmes, Design Make Sell and Imagination Space.

Design Make Sell was an interesting journey for her.

Her initial idea of upcycling and selling jam jars was adjusted slightly to make them in time for the Pop-up shop.

She remembers thinking that everybody else’s products were better than hers and that she wouldn’t sell anything.

“My first jar got bought by this nice lady… an older lady who was walking past and saw them, and she’s like oh… she really liked that, and I was shocked, I remember thinking - is she really going to buy it? And then she bought two and I was so amazed, I was like oh my god, I can’t believe that my upcycled jar someone bought two… and then after she bought two, somebody else came in and bought and by the 36

time you know it, I sold 10! I told you, I was so… I was so excited!

I was so gassed!”

After that experience, Amanda was still feeling a bit nervous about where to take things next as she still didn’t consider herself a maker. But she remembers how the group was supportive, how participants would never dismiss her ideas but rather give her tips and suggestions to grow.

Amanda continued the Design Make Sell programme for the second shop but she wasn’t sure what to make this time.

After walking around Everyone’s Warehouse wearing nice earrings, a few residents suggested she make her own so she started to make her own jewellery right there. She found out about the laser cutter and was excited as well as nervous to learn how to use something completely new. “The Warehouse Manager had patience with me, which was really good.” She also built a network of people she met at the Warehouse who were then able to support her to use the machines, by buddying up with her, which built her confidence.

She mentions how encountering all these challenges and learnings brought out her creative side. “It’s led me from making earrings to making wooden boxes, to making jewellery stands, to making wall ornaments and now I’m into making jewellery from sea shells and all sorts. So yeah it’s really brought out that part of me which I didn’t even know I had.”

BENEFITS OF ORGANISATIONAL MEMBERSHIP

Amanda, equipped with her new found making and creativity confidence, started her own brand Touch of Urban to sell her products — but she also wants to give back to residents of the borough.

For Amanda, using the spaces and accessing networking opportunities come hand in hand as there are always a lot of members of the community to connect with. She has been able to meet a lot of different people with similar ambitions for their community for example through Open Project Night which enabled Youth Spot Bar to start collaborations. Because of the atmosphere of the space, she feels that the residents she met were more open to start projects together rather than just share ideas.

When activities had to stop at Every One Every Day during the first lockdown, Amanda still wanted to make and sell but she knew that things wouldn’t go back to normal for a while so she started to think about how she could pursue the project independently. Building on her experience from the project and her relationships, she started the Independent Traders Co-op with other residents of Every One Every Day and organisations from the borough.

She also mentions how easy it was to access the spaces: “It’s different because there is no big obstacle to go through… if you want to use the space it’s a simple register with Every One Every Day, talking to them about what you want to use the spaces for, filling out a form, talking to someone from the team, walking in at a time to speak to someone and from that you can start using the space. I don’t see anywhere that does that.”

“All this came from the lovely Every One Every Day and working with the team and building such relationships with everyone”.

When using the Ripple Road shop with Youth Spot Bar, Amanda explains how they would use all the different rooms for different activities. In that sense, using the shop outside of Every One Every Day opening hours was particularly beneficial. The fact that there was always an option to use an indoor space when weather conditions were not great was also a big help for the organisation. The young people were finding it easy to access and appreciated it as a safe space for them to be in.

They are now looking for 100 traders to join, and plan to use the Learning Lab in Everyone’s Warehouse to kickstart the project as well as encouraging makers to use the space.

Youth Spot Bar also used Everyone’s Warehouse and Amanda mentions that the younger children in particular loved the Warehouse. “Before Every One Every Day started, there wasn’t any big space that you could use for free in Barking & Dagenham, especially with such equipment where you can use industrial machines.”

“There’s no way it would have started without that, no way… and I’ve been to lots of different places” Speaking about her overall journey with Every One Every Day, Amanda says, emotionally, “my experience was phenomenal… someone can see what you can potentially do and has got the tools which you haven’t got and is willing to lend you those tools long term”.

Farhana Ibrahim had always dreamt of launching her own food business from a very young age.

She recalls how her mum, Binta, would batch cook delicious sauces for her large family of 7 siblings, making cooking time easier. They would excitingly take them out of the fridge, gently warm them up, releasing the wonderful aroma and stir them through staple foods such as couscous, pasta and rice, elevating the dishes.

In Nigeria “food is at the heart of everything” and these traditional Nigerian sauces are popular in the Hausa culture with beautiful yet mild flavours. Many friends and family of her family, would comment on how delicious the sauces tasted and Farhana knew from then that she would one day like to share these with others. .

She cleverly refined and adapted the recipes that have been passed down through generations to create authentic flavours with sublime infusions.

Taking a unique twist on the humble pasta sauce, these artisan sauces have bold tastes, with natural ingredients. As well as Nigerian sauces, Farhana explains how her brand also focuses on versatile superfoods to promote wellness including moringa, baobab and hibiscus in the form of powders to use in yoghurts, porridges and teas making breakfast time fun and healthier!

business ideas and Farhana received a small pot of funding. This then inspired her to join the Prince’s Trust, who supported in setting up her business. Relaunching her business in March 2020, at the very brink of the pandemic is where Binta’s Kitchen really came to life! Currently, due to the pandemic, she has been selling these successfully online and through wholesalers.

Her journey with Every One Every Day started by word of mouth when a friend, Guiseppe, (also an Organisational Member) referred her to the project. He found it beneficial for his brand Ooze Drinks and helped her create all the branding design. Living in the borough made the spaces easily accessible for Farhana, having a tour around the Warehouse and Ripple Road shop, her first impression was that unlike other spaces she’s used, these felt very community based, busy, with lots going on!

She loved the idea of the parents and children room in the Ripple Road shop and the huge kitchen was attractive, which was her main reason for applying.

The free food and hygiene certification was very beneficial as it helped speed things up for the brand as well as the opportunity to receive training to become a key-holder for the shop.

An opportunity at university struck where a business competition was looking for new

Throughout the pandemic, Farhana has found the kitchen space very useful with easy access to a variety of equipment; waffle makers, cutlery, utensils, bowls, props and great kitchen work surfaces.

“There’s not anything I’ve struggled to find, there’s so much stuff here!”

This has really helped her to create professional images and videos of recipes for her Instagram page including the use of a tripod that was available in the space, making filming much easier! She’s often complimented on her page and asked where she films her videos with many other brands reaching out to her. Her slick and exciting content even attracted interest from the BBC with Vanessa Feltz recently interviewing her!

Farhana has expressed how the relaxed environment in the Ripple Road shop has made her “really enjoy the space” and increased her confidence through building consistent strong social content. Looking ahead she is excited about being able to co-design with others, use toolkits and equipment to help her start new practical participation projects with a variety of people.

“If I hadn’t got involved with Every One Every Day, it would have made it harder and slowed down my progress. Everything’s been really great!”

On Mother’s Day, Farhana was able to host a successful online cooking class involving families and children to encourage them to cook healthy meals.

Farhana dreams big, and rightly so with hopes that her Binta’s Kitchen sauces will land on supermarket shelves soon! Currently to help achieve this the products are being packed by a packer to help with the volume of product needed. She mentions the importance of networking and is looking forward to connecting with other food business owners locally and hoping to be able to share and exchange skills and experiences to help continue building her brand as well as building her network.

She wishes for these to continue and to be able to connect with the community.A subject very close to her heart — she envisions creating more local events and holding supper clubs once things start returning to normality. Being able to use the kitchen space for free on numerous occasions, has also meant that she saves financially to help on other aspects of her brand.

Binta’s Kitchen’s ethos is believing in promoting togetherness, wellness and culture through meals that are shared in everyday life and have the power of healing through their healthy sauces and colourful superfoods. And with that she is now ready to conquer the large supermarkets and stores with her authentic delicious homebrand sauces!

“When we were approached by Every One Every Day about a collaborative business idea, the ambitious proposal really astonished us”, said Lola and Yesenia, the multidisciplinary designers behind Wax Atelier who launched the Wax:Works programme in collaboration with Every One Every Day. “We were already into knowledge sharing, so this was a really great way to train up people who weren’t experts – who were just curious!”

Based out of Everyone’s Warehouse, Wax:Works is a collaborative business programme that brings together local residents and Organisational Members Wax Atelier, to create living wage work and produce sustainable products. So far, 15 residents have been working alongside Wax Atelier to hand-craft dipped wax candles and food wraps that are sold to customers around the world, as well as to wholesalers.

“We’ve tested lots of different models of collaborative businesses in previous years, and Wax:Works was designed to bring amazing designers and makers like Wax Atelier into the space in a way that was mutually beneficial”, says Tim, one of the Collaborative Business Designers at Everyone’s Warehouse. Set up to test out different ways of creating inclusive growth in the borough in partnership with established and knowledgeable organisations, the programme provides the space, equipment and support for local residents to learn new skills while developing a cooperative enterprise, without the usual barriers to entry, or the risks associated with launching a business.

Lola and Yesenia were used to workshop environments surrounded by makers, but at Everyone’s Warehouse, they also experienced the feeling of a flexible space with an open-door policy for local residents. “Here we are surrounded by

community. It’s not just about craft and making, but also about community. It’s like a house for everyone!”

Beginning in September 2020 with a phased approach to bring the organisation and residents together, “Discover, Learn, Earn” 30 residents participated in a 4 hour session to try their hand at traditional candle making, meet the Wax Atelier team, connect with other residents, and decide if they’d like to hone their skills to join the maker collective.

“We’re working on a new way of making businesses and forming teams and collectives”, says Khadijah, one of the Wax:Works on the ‘Discover’ phase.

“Whether we get through to the final stage or not, we’re taking away skills… We’re actually gaining something which is very innovative. That’s the core of what we’re doing.”

After following the four hour Discovery process, participants and Wax Atelier decided whether or not they would like to continue with the programme and develop their skills. The following Learning phase saw 20 residents take part in 34 hours of workshops over 11 days, to learn the many complex elements that make up the process of dipping candles and wax coating linen.

Participants were supported by Every One Every Day with a £200 stipend to support them during this phase, which equipped them with the skills and knowledge to become professional makers for the new collective. The final stage involved an interview between Wax Atelier and the individual makers where they discussed their learning journey and considered if they’d like to join the collective – 12 makers were selected to join the collective, and began a trial Earn phase of 6 weeks, working on average 12 hours per week at London Living Wage.

Now with a well established team and manufacturing process, Wax:Works produces thousands of units each month, and a variety of candles and food wraps are stocked by major retailers, including online lifestyle brand Toast.

With one of the highest unemployment rates of any London borough, Wax:Works has provided a steady income and outlet for residents as production has continued throughout the ups and downs of the past year. For Carina, one of the makers, Wax:Works has been an “oasis in the midst of Covid”.

“Over the lockdown, it hasn’t been easy for me…

I really missed that human connection, that interaction”, says Ags, another Wax:Works participant and resident of Barking for six years.

“Being in Everyone’s Warehouse, even though we have to wear a mask and have space between us, it’s still absolutely different from talking to someone on a screen or learning via online resources, that’s a big part of it.”

She’s excited by the progress and development occurring today. “The more we get talking to each other, the more we notice there are similarities, even though there are differences with backgrounds.”

Now that it has been up and running for 6 months, Wax:Works is really beginning to pick up steam, with the residents and Wax Atelier working flat out to keep up with demand. As the skill of the makers increases, they are also starting to think about what Wax:Works means as a business, and what their vision for the future looks like.

“This is just the beginning”, says Tim. “It shows that with the right environment and a desire to collaborate, hugely diverse groups of people can come together and achieve amazing things.”

RIVER RODING TRUST A CHARITY PRESERVING, PROTECTING AND RESTORING THE RIVER RODING.

The River Roding has had an enigmatic settlement of large houseboats at Barking’s town quay for twenty years. At odds with the draconian regulation of the primary canal network, Paul Powlesland saw the upper River Roding as an opportunity to establish a new model for how those living on boats could positively impact a locale, both natural and human.

Having set sail for the Roding in 2017, which had become largely inaccessible to the public and was effectively derelict, Paul became the first live-aboard boater the upper river had seen.

“We are keen to work with anybody in the local area who wants to engage with the river.”

He has since been joined by a cohort of inspiring boaters and local people and the River Roding Trust was born. Early champions of this initiative were the late Johnny Patterson, a legendary figure who lived on his barge ‘La France’ at the Town quay and Elaine Sealey who is a resident of the Harts lane estate, adjacent to the river.

Relatively quickly a trickle of inland navigators arrived to form the community of boat dwellers that make up what are now the River Roding Trust moorings. Following the establishment of the charity, these (and hopefully further) sites for boats are becoming instituted with formal arrangements with the relevant bodies.

The vast majority of fees paid by those keeping boats on the river, and calling it home go into restoration projects undertaken by the trust.

With features of the broader vision including the Roding Edgelands linear park, reinstating the conditions of the river necessary for navigation up to Ilford and the River Roding Rangers scheme where local volunteers are making the lost landscape north of the moorings a place for public enjoyment of nature. They believe this is a unique opportunity to engage with the river as it winds its way to Ilford. The River Roding Rangers t-shirts are set to be screen printed in Everyone’s Warehouse where members of the team have already been inducted.

“WE ARE COMMITTED TO ENGAGING WITH LOCAL CHAMPIONS.”

The scale of the project is considerable. Pollution and refuse choke the watercourse, but thanks to enormous community support and engagement – much has already been achieved.

Thanks to a donation of Woodland Trust tree saplings from Every One Every Day, 100 trees were planted in a collaborative event on the River Roding in the Hart’s Lane estate to complement the many hundred trees the River Roding Trust have planted elsewhere. This wild area will now be joined by an Open Corner of planters and a shed that the residents of the estate along with a number of the boaters have co-designed over lockdown.“We hope to benefit further from the networking opportunities afforded by Organisational Membership.”

Beyond t-shirts, there’s much the Trust are excited to explore, from creating signage to forging networking connections with other Organisational Members and residents in the borough. So keep an eye out for boaters on your next visit!

HOW IT STARTED The founder of Maidie Create, Harsharan, grew up around domestic violence and her dad had alcohol substance misuse problems, but she persevered, was determined and studied and graduated in fashion, even having her own clothing collection in the once British iconic fashion store, Topshop!

Her eventual move to Barking and Dagenham led her to want to help the community, her heart collapsed after seeing all the homeless and vulnerable people outside the station and she knew she wanted to create something - after all “community is home”. With her experience in fashion, Harsharan decided to contact Barking and Dagenham’s Council for Voluntary Service and taught ladies how to sew. Thanks to a push from her business mentor, she turned it into a charity in 2012. Maidie Create Ltd was born. Growing up, Harsharan’s safe place was with her Nan, after she sadly passed away from Alzheimer's she knew she wanted to do something to leave her lasting legacy.

WORKING WITH VUNERABLE ADULTS

Continuing to want to help women change their lives, Harsharan sought funding from LBBD Council for a 6 week programme to help women recover from alcohol and substance misuse and domestic violence. Receiving her first grant, she recalls “It felt like a blessing!”

“I could have seen my experience with dad as a negative one or as an opportunity to help others and that’s just what I did.”

Harsharan started working in women’s refuges and the Source in East London to deliver arts and crafts in a non intrusive way for many to open up and share their feelings all whilst upskilling and having access to shared paid opportunities. Maidie Create also ran a family programme working with social services to help children who came out of care and were released back to their families. The programme reached 25 people (compared to usually 6-8 people) with 3 generations of families and 2 main volunteers, one of which became the organisation’s creative assistant.

COOKING CLASSES WITH VISUALLY IMPAIRED RESIDENTS IN THE EVERY ONE EVERY DAY RIPPLE ROAD SHOP A firm believer in social inclusion, Harsharan connected with the Every One Every Day project after picking up a newspaper in Barking Library.

She went through every single page and thought it would be a great opportunity to network and bring some of the people she worked with together.

She was also attracted by having access to free certified training.

“I’m all about updating my skills all the time because I wouldn’t be a good teacher if I wasn’t learning myself, I need to be a student myself.”

When visiting the Every One Every Day shops in Martin’s Corner and Ripple Road, Harsharan felt welcomed and a sense of warmth and friendliness from the space and the team. This is what she wanted, a safe space to organise a 6 week cooking programme with visually impaired service users, with the support of Kendrick - a rehabilitation worker from LBBD Council. Two of the service users had already heard of Every One Every Day, one from attending one of the regular Tea and Toast sessions held in the shops.

Some of the users were partially sighted, therefore could make out some shapes and the feeling they got from the space was a “home from home”. The shop was in a prime location, disability friendly and the kitchen having good accessibility was key.

Being able to have basic ingredients in the kitchen also really helped, as well as having various kitchen equipment like a microwave and a food processor which meant she didn’t need to buy it herself and it took the pressure off financially, that money was put towards the service users instead.

The programme had 20 participants overall, all of whom gained a lot from it - one participant gained so much confidence from the programme that he opened his own tea shop in Leyton!

Harsharan felt that being able to be a keyholder and using the shop outside of Every One Every Day’s opening hours was absolutely amazing and worked so well. She also mentions that the whole induction process was easy.

“Working with vulnerable people, having an empty shop felt safer for them, it wouldn’t have been successful with other people around.” When speaking about the impact of using Every One Every Day’s spaces, Harsharan says: “It had a huge impact! Without the kitchen facilities, we wouldn’t have been able to reach 50

out to those people and run the programme. That impacted us as an organisation, as we have gone from teaching how to sew to teaching how to cook in a kitchen, a major leap! Many of the users, as they struggled to cook at home, suffered from diabetes and high cholesterol, this gave them confidence. One service user now owns a tea shop - which is so fantastic. And another user brought his 2 children. They cooked together, which I found was amazing to see. The kids said that they normally cook convenience food at home, “we just eat pizza!” so it was good to introduce them to healthy eating. They then went on to make a chicken casserole from scratch with their dad. The Mayor came to deliver certificates at the end of the programme too!”

Harsharan felt like the programme even impacted her family and her son too, who has Autism. Her little boy is her inspiration, he has intolerances to gluten, dairy, soy and wheat, and the programme helped her to experiment with different cooking techniques.

NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES AND THE COMMUNITY

Harsharan had used studio spaces previously but she didn’t feel so connected. Whilst working in an Every One Every Day space she describes it as more interactive, being able to see people in the different work areas and having opportunities to collaborate and network.

“It’s such an asset to have Every One Every Day in this borough. It’s brilliant. Thank you so much for everything you are all doing - you are an asset to this borough. It’s important Every One Every Day stays, after having such an impact with this community.”

Having attended an Open Project Night, Harsharan found that the opportunity to network was brilliant!

Being able to network and meet people whilst doing the in person training, such as the food hygiene training was also good to connect with other organisations in the Borough.

Thinking about Covid recovery, she adds “I’m a really optimistic person, I even say to my service users, what are the good things you can take away from this pandemic, try to put a spin on it and it gives it another perspective. There’s going to be a lot of people that are going to need support, but I’m excited about more opportunities and what we can do together!”

Looking to the future, Harsharan would love to learn how to use some of the equipment in the Warehouse such as the 3D printing machine, the ceramics and the sewing machines. She’s also looking forward to more networking events.

Make A Difference At Sandies, is a registered charity that offers counselling and therapy services to all ages, from children to the elderly, and aims to make mental health services more accessible a at low cost for everyone within the community. After the initial assessment, local residents can get 6 free sessions and from there, residents only need to pay what they can afford.

“Our hope is for local people to have access to free/low-cost therapy for as long as possible when they are in crisis and to cut waiting times significantly for these services.”The team of 16+ certified counsellors and trainees work from a charity shop in Becontree.

“We have a room at the back of the charity shop which is used for sessions but it isn’t very inviting. There are no windows and the space is tiny but the only one we had access to until the Every One Every Day shop...the shop space is open and friendly and has a feeling of home plus its really easy for people to find...all of this is really important for the work that we do.”

Since their initial interaction at Everyone’s Warehouse to find out more about the project, they have become Organisational Members and have been able to utilise the Church Elm Lane shop. Sandra’s team have been inducted to the space, become key-holders and use the space when not being used as the Every One Every Day shop.

Layla and Daniel are counsellors working within the Make A Difference At Sandies Charity organisation. Layla’s first experience in the spaces was when she attended a meeting at Everyone’s Warehouse to see a bit of what happens at Every One Every Day, to discuss how to get involved as 52

an Organisational Member and how to best get their services out there to the community.

“I was really gobsmacked with how fantastic the warehouse was, what was going on there you know, all the food being made, making clothes, knitting, setting up all these projects, blueprints everywhere! It’s just really intriguing to me to see a space used for so many different things and I thought wow what a fantastic platform this is.”

Layla then got to view more of the shop spaces and look at what would work best for their sessions and the residents attending them, as counselling and therapeutic services can be highly emotional and sensitive environments so needing to choose spaces that would work best in making residents feel the most secure, comfortable and safe.

Layla and Daniel decided the best space to use was the Church Elm Lane shop for their sessions.

As Organisational Members, they both attended the online health and safety level 2 training, first aid, fire safety awareness training and also keyholder training in person to be able to use the space at times when the team weren’t there.

“Every One Every Day really helped us to make that space usable which we found fantastic. From risk assessments to online courses, everything needed for us to work safely from the space.”

They booked the space to use twice per week on Monday and Friday evenings when the shop was not being used by others.

This was important due to the sensitive nature of the conversations. One of the other things that Make a Difference at Sandies offers is work

experience to trainee counsellors and therapists and Layla and Daniel worked with 2 trainees during their time in the Church Elm Lane shop.

As Organisational Members, Layla and the team want to expand on how they utilise the Every One Every Day platform and want to create links for their users to access the practical sessions available such as gardening, cooking and crafting noting that all these are very beneficial for improving mental well being. They are also considering group therapy sessions with a practical element, getting involved with the green corners project Open Corners and introducing the chicken in the shop as a form of soft therapy.

“I kind of saw a vision of merging what we do with some of the stuff you do, so especially cooking, that can be therapeutic as well so I was hoping in the future to get a bit more involved in your side of things, not just be a counsellor that uses the space and that’s it.”

Make a Difference at Sandies is looking forward to more networking opportunities in the future with other organisations and residents. With a lot of things being online over the past year, it brings more opportunities for those activities to happen, even for those that can’t physically attend.

WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DO YOU DO? Hi, I’m AJ. I’m one of the One Room Collective along with Akanele Kalu, Steph O, AJ Thompson, Edem Setsofia, Ade Yusuf, Selasi, Daniel G, Ola Adams and Robert Shadamaro.

We created One Room so that we can connect in the real world again, re-discover the love for the physical world and show what can happen when often overlooked communities come together. We want to showcase the abundance of talent and skills that exist in this corner of East London - Barking and Dagenham.

Through intimate events, workshops, exhibitions and now a festival, this active participation has been a way of storytelling and archiving and celebrating stories that exist in our community.

Showing that creativity and inspiration can exist anywhere when supported and given the space to flourish authentically. Together we are rekindling our creativity, inquisitiveness, and desire to share energy with each other.

We set up in 2018 and so far the story has included 12 events ranging from wellness, live music, design workshops, live art, panel discussions, exhibitions, and meditation as well as The New East festival.

Our Mantra is: No One Room is Ever One Thing!

The project was a vindication and nod in the direction that the area and the narrative around the area was about to change. It was a beautiful place to meet the wider community and to see how people started projects. The atmosphere was always kind and welcoming and is something that, as a group we always wanted to carry to the spaces we create.

I got involved with planning and hosting sessions as I, along with some friends, were interested in holding outside music and poetry events. We were able to test some ideas through the project and build a network. Not long after I joined the Every One Every Day team as a Project Designer.

One Room was developed in this process and we soon signed up for Organisational Membership.

We benefited from many things including the network we were able to build through meeting residents and organisations in the shops and at events, use of spaces and equipment and being able to test ideas in a safe space. The collective shares a lot of the principles of the Every One Every Day project and we learnt about how to create spaces not just tangibly but also intangibly, this was very important for us - allowing a multitude of ideas to exist in the same place!

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE MAIN BENEFITS OF ORGANISATIONAL MEMBERSHIP TO YOU ?

There’ve been many benefits for us.

the masks for the New East festival, and Brigitta from Bri’s Kitchen, who was in the Collaborative Business Programmes Pantry and Bowled, for the catering.

We have been able to use the Every One Every Day shops and Everyone’s Warehouse in various ways. They have been great for us to co-work from and hold meetings as well as hold some events there including being a feature at one of the Open Night Project nights. Having access to the spaces outside of opening hours has been great as it gives a chance to people that may not have time in the usual hours to still get acquainted and have an association with the space. The spaces allowed for the team to express different versions of ideas that created more access points for collaboration and taking part.

Another important connection that was created through the membership was the one with The White House (a public space for art and social activity in the borough). This has resulted in an exhibition and we are currently working on a podcast.

The spaces are not just spaces though, they are also full of equipment that we were able to access and use. The wood workshop area in Everyone’s Warehouse was used to create the stage, seating and designs for the New East festival. It has helped add a level of quality to the events and festival.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO NOW?

Networking has also been a huge benefit.

As well as meeting new residents in the spaces and introducing them to our work, many have also performed and attended the events which has been great! We have met other

Oghosa started her creative social media channel Sincerely Oghosa in 2010, at the age of 18, whilst still at university.

While studying law, she knew that it wasn’t her calling and wanted to go down a creative path and share her story to connect with others.

Blogs and DIY tutorials were very popular around 2008 - 2009 but a friend suggested creating a Vlog to show her personality, so Oghosa created her very first video on YouTube and it grew from there!

Oghosa uses her voice to discuss issues for black women and feminism which transcends race issues. She also works with brands who request social content. Oghosa is now a full time influencer, since 2018, and also shares her content through Instagram and most recently Tik Tok. Although now based in South London, Oghosa lived in Dagenham for 15 years and came across Every One Every Day whilst still residing there.

WORKING WITH EVERYONE

Oghosa came across Every One Every Day in Summer 2018, whilst walking past the Church Elm Lane shop to visit the tailors a few doors down. One of the team spoke to her and invited her into an Open Table that was going on. She immediately loved the space, she felt like there was amazing lighting and a supportive aura in the space.

“Almost a miraculous moment - if she didn’t stop me I might have just walked past and thought oh that’s a lovely shop.”

Oghosa was very keen to use the Light Rooma photo/film studio set up by residents in the shop, to create some of her content and initially started doing so when the shop was in use but then became a key-holder.

After this, she was able to have easy access to the space and use the Light Room out of hours.

It meant that she wasn’t confined to certain days and did not have to worry about the noise (from residents in the shop taking part in other sessions) being picked up in her videos.

She used the equipment available for filming and photography. She knew how to use most of the filming equipment but the team was always at hand to offer any support. One of her favourite pieces of equipment were the softboxes as she had not had access to these at home.

She used the Light Room to film for Instagram content, lookbooks and much more. She would also use the space to sit and talk about a variety of subjects in a room next to the Light Room that gave her another great backdrop because of its neutral white walls and the addition of bookshelves made it feel and look very homely and cosy. The lighting in the spaces was great, spacious and she was able to use the lights and 60

the backdrops in the studio.

Using the spaces once or twice a week helped her to create consistent professional content which grew her audience as they were consistently engaged with regular content. Having access to the spaces meant she had the freedom to create content when she needed to, be creative and was able to take her time to produce. If she hadn’t had free access to these spaces her content production would have suffered.

“Although YouTube has a studio you can use, the booking schedule is packed and you can only use it if you have a certain amount of followers.”

She had struggled to find something close by, especially as she had to carry all her equipment and outfit changes.

She remembers filming in her bedroom, and she would get mean comments about the wallpaper, light and so on, the quality she wanted to achieve wasn’t there. She had started researching studios but knew the budget may be an issue, so finding out about the project was perfect timing.

“I’ve always enjoyed the networking side of Every One Every Day. Being there can introduce you to others around including other organisations and people doing things in their community.” She enjoys how the spaces in the borough are community based and you feel that connection in the spaces too.

“I’VE ALWAYS ENJOYED THE NETWORKING SIDE OF EVERY ONE EVERY DAY. BEING THERE CAN INTRODUCE YOU TO OTHERS AROUND INCLUDING OTHER ORGANISATIONS AND PEOPLE DOING THINGS IN THEIR COMMUNITY.” “Everyone is really helpful and friendly.” She likes that everyone has access to different shops so that they have a chance to access the spaces for whatever they personally need.

“I always found myself staying there longer than I needed to be.” She recalls how there would be many people in the shop, chatting over a coffee, it always felt really welcoming and met other residents through this. She recalls meeting one resident who was green-fingered and interested in a sustainable way of living that really inspired her, so much so that she brought some of that into her video content.

The purpose of Make Your Mark B&D is to support children and young people in the borough of Barking and Dagenham to access resources, supplies, materials and opportunities that they don’t usually have access to. It specifically targets young people from disadvantaged backgrounds but is open to all young people in the borough.

HOW IT STARTED It all started when Bobbie-Jo, the founder of Make Your Mark B&D, was working at Every One Every Day as an Office Manager. Although she always knew that she wanted to start an organisation to work for herself, she was introduced to collaborative working and co-design ideas through Every One Every Day. After 2 years of working for the project, she decided that she wanted to bring those ideas to a more targeted audience young people - and do something locally.

Working with young people made particular sense for Bobbie-Jo because of her own personal experience as a resident of Barking and Dagenham. “My children didn’t have many

Now Make Your Mark B&D has 2 full-time volunteers coming from catering backgrounds and a few other volunteers supporting in activities, risk assessments and social media.

Some of these volunteers had their food hygiene training through Every One Every Day and came through their participation in BD CAN during the first lockdown. Make Your Mark B&D also has a codesign team of young people mainly from the borough but also from Newham and Redbridge where Bobbie-Jo hopes to expand some activities in the future.

JOINING ORGANISATIONAL MEMBERSHIP OF EVERY ONE EVERY DAY Bobbie-Jo first heard of Every One Every Day when the project was about to launch in November 2017 and she applied to be part of the team. Her family connected with the project early on and her children were invested in the project, attending and hosting sessions as well as using the coworking space.

“In my family when some of the kids were stepping into those spaces they were like, whoa… using the stuff, machinery, that they never used before and probably never would have if it wasn’t for Every One Every Day” Her daughter, after being involved with participating and hosting sessions in the programme, now has her own vinyl printer and has started her own business of handmade products.

This family experience is what Bobbie-Jo wants to recreate with her own organisation, bringing those opportunities to other young people.

Bobbie-Jo signed up for Organisational Membership early on when she was still working at Every One Every Day and only had an initial idea 64

of her own project. Not only did she know that she could benefit from the Every One Every Day platform, but also all her learning from the team and residents she has interacted with.

“I knew I wouldn’t have the budget for all the equipment and machinery to start with, it made perfect sense to have Organisational Membership so that my members could access these resources.“A couple of months before launching the Holiday Pack Lunch project, she got in touch with the Every One Every Day team about organisational guidance and realised the wider potential for support alongside the use of spaces and equipment.

Different team members were able to support her with a GDPR policy and graphic design as well as connect her to other organisations of the borough to start networking.

PACK LUNCHES IN THE RIPPLE ROAD SHOP Make Your Mark B&D started to use Every One Every Day spaces in August 2020 when the organisation needed to provide pack lunches at very short notice during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Bobbie-Jo immediately thought of using the Community Kitchen in the Ripple Road shop due to its location and her knowledge of the space.

Being a key-holder meant they could access the space when the team was not there, they were able to utilise not only the kitchen but also the main space to prep the packs easily and had access to all the equipment too.

“Alain (operations manager) told me, BobbieJo, use what you need, use what you want! So we were able to use things like cooking equipment and spatulas and bowls and if we didn’t have paper, I was able to use A4 paper and the laminator… it was things like that, that maybe seemed small at the time but actually without those things Pack Lunch Club wouldn’t have happened.”

She mentions how her team used the large table in the front area of the shop to pack lunches up and the fact that whenever they forgot something, they could find it in the shop, whether it be blue plasters or aprons - enabling them to carry on and focus on what mattered.

Reflecting on the use of the Ripple Road shop this Summer, had her quite emotional.

OTHER USES OF THE SPACES After having successfully used the Ripple Road shop for the Pack Lunch project, Bobbie-Jo also wanted to use the Lightroom (a photography/film room set up by residents) in the Church Elm Lane shop to take professional-looking photos and

filming short clips to use on social media and leaflets. “We had access to an amazing camera, we were able to borrow a tripod, we were able to borrow a lightbox.”

Covid restrictions meant that they weren’t able to go ahead with the photo shoot in the end but she recalls how easy it was to just ask for advice on how she could take great photos and be directed to the right spaces, equipment and team members.

Now that access to spaces for Organisational Members has resumed, she will be using the Warehouse with 8 young people to take lifestyle photographs for her social media and leaflets and apply for funding. She mentions that being able to use the Warehouse on the weekend is particularly beneficial for her audience.

Detailing her experience of using the spaces as an Organisational Member, Bobbie-Jo says there is a specific feeling when one enters Every One Every Day spaces of calm, openness and homeliness that she has not found elsewhere. As a former Office Manager of the project, she also can’t help commenting on logistics of the space: “When I walk into an Every One Every Day space, I can spot a fire extinguisher, I can see where the emergency first aider is, things in Every One Every Day spaces are very well signed, they have fantastic signage and things are in the right place where they should be or you would expect them to be”.

As a key-holder using the spaces without staff supervision, she says this is key to making the use of spaces smooth and easy.

NETWORKING AND THE COMMUNITY As a resident and an Organisational Member, Bobbie-Jo has met a lot of new people and organisations from different backgrounds and walks of life. She has met people from One Room, Mums On a Mission and Youth Spot Bar whilst using the spaces. Met female residents who inspired her and helped her design the Well Girl!

Project, aimed at supporting and promoting positive development of local teenage girls and she was able to continue communication with her contacts at The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham after working at Every One Every Day which was useful for her organisation.

Bobbie-Jo is now looking forward to meeting other organisations of the borough working with young people and local small businesses from which she can source materials, as well as finding out about funding opportunities and creating support for each other.

Reflecting on her journey so far, Bobbie-Jo remembers how working closely with Tessy, 66

founder of the Every One Every Day project, has positively influenced her to start her own project: “I was 39 when I started working at Every One Every Day and I was not that empowered previously to that. I would not have come to realise that I could have done this! I knew I was going to do something but having Tessy’s energy and aura [and badass-girl-boss-bitchy get out there and you do it…] she was unlimited with what she did and I was like, you know what, we can do it, women can do it, women can be founders, women can change the goddamn world!”

As Make Your Mark B&D is still in the early stages of development, Bobbie-Jo is not running out of ideas to empower children and young people.

One of the wonderful things about the Collaborative Business Programmes, is that residents have participated and then gone on to become Organisational Members. As well as the benefits to their professional journey, there have also been friendships and collaborations developing between participants. One great example of this has been the amazing residents that met through the food programmes Pantry and Bowled.

Catia comments: “It’s nice because we already knew each other from before. It’s helped us come together and work together now.”

This group of residents that love to cook and were interested in learning how to set up a food business, were offered specialist support to grow food, design food products, develop branding and given an understanding of the financial principles of food businesses whilst having access to the fully equipped Industrial Kitchen in Everyone’s Warehouse. The programmes focused on sustainability and environmental food concerns and connected the emerging business ideas with the Every One Every Day projects network. They also connected with the existing local network of food businesses and were able to test trade at markets.

You will read the individual stories of some of those members on the following pages.

One of the great opportunities the participants had was to provide catering for a local community space Company Drinks. From this, when Company Drinks had a call out for a local steering group for their Good Food Collective, they were some of the first to know.

Through their connection with each other, the residents informed one another of this opportunity and now are all active members of the steering group.

8 out of 12 of the collective are signed up as individual Organisation Members and have benefited from the use of the Industrial Kitchen in Everyone’s Warehouse during lockdown to make and distribute food packs for those in need.

Helen explains how it helped her and the collective: “We could get deliveries made there, store things, packaging, use the equipment, access to paperwork of how to do everything, safety records, training availability and resources, we could print off labelling, access to computers, templates for food health and safety, allergy info everything at our fingertips so we didn’t have to run around like headless chickens.”

The residents are all really excited to have accessed this new opportunity to continue to work together.

Elisabeth shares: “Many of us didn’t know where the steering group would lead us. We started and eventually found ourselves in this big thing! It’s a good experience for us.”

And Helen concludes: “We are united through our passion and making sure the community has access to it.”

Brigitta found her passion for food and cooking when at university, especially inspired by Asian and Thai cuisine.

“I explored and people around me enjoyed my food and would ask for the recipes so i decided to share photos and recipes on my personal Instagram page.”

Her personal account was taken over by food so she decided to create a dedicated account and Bri’s Kitchen was born, around 4 years ago. After a while, she realised that she wasn’t as consistent as she wanted with her postings because she wasn’t as confident with her digital skills. Brigitta then found out about the Every One Every Day project and participated in 2 of the Collaborative Business Programmes, Bowled and Pantry. It did not only give her the push to restart Bri’s Kitchen but also, with her new found knowledge, wanted to focus it around healthy recipes.

“It was so great to learn professional skills and be trained to be qualified. Once I finished the programmes, it gave me the confidence to do it myself.”

Her journey with Every One Every Day started by being invited to The Open Project Night event at Everyone’s Warehouse.

“I was just mesmerised by the whole Warehouse!

It was really nice to see something like that... it‘s such a great thing for the community and mainly for free. You make so many connections and networking is super easy.”

Brigitta’s first experience of the Collaborate Business Programme was Bowled. “I’ve learnt so much! I’ve learnt how to cook with people in the kitchen and work together as a team, I used to hate being in a kitchen with other people.”

This was her first experience of having access to an industrial kitchen and she mentioned being really proud to have contributed to the design and fitting of the kitchen, not just the use of it.

Pantry was a totally different experience for her as it gave her the opportunity to learn how to make and sell her own products with the collective. Brigitta produced two chutneys and says she benefited from the collective working together in the process of creation. She went on to sell her chutneys in the pop up shop in Barking.

“Being part of both programmes has given me the knowledge that I didn’t even know I needed.

It’s put me in situations that I have learnt and grown from.”

The Every One Every Day spaces (Everyone’s Warehouse and the Ripple Road shop) and equipment have been paramount in Brigitta’s journey so far - being a key-holder and having access to The Industrial Kitchen as well as Everyone’s Kitchen facilities. She has also used the spaces whilst working with the Good Food Collective, most of whom she initially met through Bowled and Pantry. “It’s so nice to see how we have all grown together.”

As well as the kitchen spaces, she has also utilised other equipment in the spaces such as lighting and camera equipment and the sewing machines.

“The networking and collaborations it creates are amazing, I was even asked to cater for the New East Festival which is run by One Room who are also members.”

Armed with the knowledge, network and access gained through the project, Brigitta is ready to go full speed ahead with Bri’s Kitchen (even quitting her job in fashion) by hosting events along with building her online presence and would love to have a market stall in the borough.

The pandemic has hindered this slightly, but she is keen to move forward once things open up again and will be supported in doing so as an Organisational Member.

Catia had her first experiences of cooking for others at a young age, growing up in Portugal with her grandparents. She remembers baking cakes to donate and sell at her local church.

She always liked cooking and experimenting with different recipes.

Catia also loved being involved in her community and she was part of Creative Barking and Dagenham as a Cultural Connector when she first heard of Every One Every Day. Her husband

Danny attended the launch of the project and then her whole family got involved, attending and hosting several sessions from Story Box to Kids Trade schools to Great Cooks.

“I really enjoyed it. I always had my three kids with me, I didn’t know how I would manage with hosting workshops but the support was really good. I was made comfortable and my confidence grew from there. It was very organic.”

When she heard about the Collaborative Business Programme’s opportunities, she came to Everyone’s Warehouse to check it out. After the information session she signed up for Bowled, Design Make Sell and Imagination Space.

Through Bowled, she started learning about catering, experimenting with recipes and making product samples, for example marzipan.

“I always liked cooking but working with professional chefs and caterers in a professional kitchen gave me a different type of confidence.

It made me realise it was something I could actually do.”

After being involved with Bowled, Catia joined the Good Food Collective to pursue her catering experience. Many of the collective already knew each other through Bowled so it was easier to work together.

Catia is now a project leader for the meal side and was able to use The Industrial Kitchen during lockdown.

“It meant we could cook in a professional kitchen.

It made it much easier as we were already familiar with the kitchen.”

Catia also mentioned how she was able to use the Community Kitchen in the Ripple Road shop which was really easy to access but also borrowed some equipment such as large boxes keeping the food warm - essential to provide catering services.

Now she is looking forward to meeting even more local organisations and residents, after having already built a solid network of contacts in the borough.

“I was volunteering in the community before but I wasn’t used to networking and meeting new people. I’m used to it now due to the Every One Every Day culture. It’s just natural now.”

Catia also joined the Wax Works business programme and developed making skills as well as her food and catering experience.

“It’s going really well. We are getting more confident in the processes and getting to know what it means to be a co-operative.”

Helen first came across the Every One Every Day project when she saw a large sign outside Everyone’s Warehouse with a group of people gathered, and so popped in.

Helen, as a key-holder, has been able to access The Industrial Kitchen in Everyone’s Warehouse as well as the Community Kitchen in the Ripple Road shop.

“I had just left my previous job, I was really down.

It was really nice to be around others and seeing like minded people, it was fantastic!”

“Having the responsibility of keyholding is brilliant. There was just no access to anything else in lockdown. It’s been positive for us as individuals as well as a collective in lockdown. The in person interaction has been really important and helped with reducing isolation.”

After participating in various cooking sessions including making chutney, jams and preserves, Helen joined the Collaborative Business Programme Bowled.

“I was so nice to feel useful again and part of a community.”

As part of the Bowled collective, Helen was able to not only meet others that had similar interests but also receive certified training as well as benefiting from external guests that came in to run food related workshops for the group.

“We came up with the branding, worked with the design team to create a logo and did some test catering at Open Project Nights to get feedback. We then catered for other events such as for The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.”

Helen’s participation on the Every One Every Day project has introduced her to a whole new community that shares similar values as hers.

Helen is interested in developing this further by exploring working with children and families and the sustainability of food for residents in the borough.

“Can they grow something in their back garden or window sill? Grow mint and make mint tea!”

“It’s about the future and the sustainability of the world… I have to start with myself first!”

She used the kitchens to put meals together which were then distributed to the community during the first lockdown. The food made reflected the diverse community of the borough.

Helen mentions that the support from the Every One Every Day team was brilliant and it meant that they could do things properly and thoroughly.

Rubina, founder of Kharal Masala, remembers when she first came across the Every One Every Day project.

“I saw the shop, I took a newspaper and got involved with my family hosting sessions like Story Box. I attended sessions every single day.

I was a regular. My whole day was planned around the activities in the shop.”

She then found out about the Collaborative Business Programmes and signed up for Pantry.

Rubina’s daughters had often encouraged her to explore her cooking skills and to think about how to make money from it but she was never sure where to start so Pantry seemed like the perfect opportunity.

“My daughters can’t cook asian food so if i could get them to cook asian food with my paste then I knew it was good. If generations lose how to make their cultural cooking, it will be lost in time.

“I learnt every single thing in the Pantry programme.”

With the support of the Every One Every Day team, the equipment and resources available, the combined knowledge of the group and specialist training that was available, Rubina was able to learn about designing, production, branding and test trading in a safe environment.

“If i had to start developing on my own it would have been very difficult.”

Rubina was part of the development of The Industrial Kitchen in Everyone’s Warehouse and the use of it was paramount in her journey to creating Kharal Masala.

“I had the experience to share what might be needed for different cooking needs. The equipment is brilliant! Everything is really

really good. The best quality...I love it!”

Rubina met many like minded people in the process of Pantry, and being in the Warehouse space, and a real network of friendship and collaboration was built. Many of these residents then went on to join Bowled together and then continued onto projects outside of the project too.

Building from the knowledge and skills learnt through the Collaborative Business Programmes, Rubina was also able to find external support and is now selling sauces through her website and distribution partners across London. She also supports women that are interested in starting home business’ by making fresh fish fingers and selling to their neighbours along with cooking classes for young people that want to learn how to cook with her delicious sauces.

Kathy, founder of Plantastic, was interested in growing from a very young age. She remembers going to the garden with her dad to plant seeds together. As an adult, she lived in a flat with her children and started thinking about how she could keep growing things without a private garden. She started looking at abandoned land and after a three-year search, Kathy launched a pilot under Environmental People’s Organisation with the goal to establish a community garden for everyone to access.

Through Organisational Membership, Kathy was able to connect the dots and start using the spaces as an individual and for Plantastic as a key-holder. After using Everyone’s Warehouse and its industrial kitchen extensively to test her own products, she is now also using the Community Kitchen in the Ripple Road shop to host cooking workshops and put together a recipe book for Plantastic.

“Everyone deserves to have a garden!”

That’s how Plantastic started - now a community garden based in Dagenham with up to 28 participants, on average each year, which prioritises access for people living in flats with little or no access to gardens and people facing health inequalities.

Kathy first came across Every One Every Day after seeing the newspaper and then a friend of hers also told her about it.

Aside from the use of the kitchen for which Kathy says “there is no comparison” locally, she also values the networking opportunities. Kathy met a lot of ladies from the Good Food Collective during the Collaborative Business Programmes, but she also met a great deal of local residents, some of whom then joined Pantastic.

Elizabeth, founder of Samstel Sauces, first heard about Every One Every Day when she was out of a job and was looking for something to get involved in. She used to look after her grandchildren but they had grown up and didn’t need her as often so she was desperate to find something to do as she couldn’t see herself just sitting around.

“The newspaper arrived at my door and I thought “ah ha” let me go and see what this is about. I went to the Church Elm Lane shop and the team told me about the project. They mentioned cooking - I can cook! So I thought that’s how I can be involved.”

Elisabeth started attending and hosting sessions but she was looking for something more business related. The team told her about the Collaborative Business Programmes so she started going to Everyone’s Warehouse.

“I learnt about the Warehouse and it grew from there. Whatever was available, I got involved.”

Elisabeth joined Pantry and Bowled and started to learn new skills. She would use the things that she was more comfortable with at first and then started to expand. She recalls that Bowled was where all the collaboration ideas started, everyone was working together and were their own bosses.

“Pantry was fantastic! That gave me the chance to go to the market to sell. I’m very funny but I’m also very shy. At the market I got to talk to customers and be part of the setting up.”

That’s when Elisabeth started making her sauces.

She initially explored the name Liz’s sauce, under Pantry, and after she developed two products, a Jollof sauce and a green chilli sauce, and started her own brand Samstel Sauces.

But Elizabeth also says she is a community person, she likes to give back and wanted to contribute towards that by joining the Good Food Collective and keep collaborating with the residents she met at Every One Every Day. Having access to Everyone’s Warehouse was key for Elisabeth’s journey: “It’s just the best!” She particularly valued the opportunity to be a keyholder. “It makes it inclusive. It makes you feel like you are one of us.”

Elizabeth also mentions the quality of the equipment and all the things she was able to use from food processors to mobile cookers and bottle washers. But more importantly she values all the connections she made there. “I’ve got lots of friends now through Every One Every Day and Pantry, it’s really nice.”

Elizabeth now continues her journey with Samstel Sauces which she is currently in the process of registering as a business. One of her dreams is to run a supported accommodation unit for asylum seekers.

Piece of Cake was founded in 1992 in Muswell Hill

by Cake Maker and qualified teacher Victoria Hornby.

Over time, the organisation has travelled and as of 2007, Piece of Cake came to call Barking and Dagenham home. It provides quality cakes for all occasions and engagements and also specialises in diabetic, glutenfree, eggless and dairy-free cakes.

Piece of Cake also provides learning opportunities for those interested in the Cake Making industry through workshops, sessions and mentoring. The organisation also has the capacity to include ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) in basic maths and english where needed.

Victoria Hornby hosted baking sessions as part of the Every One Every Day programme and participated in the Pantry business programme.

Shpresa Programme is a charity that promotes the participation and contribution of Albanian-speaking refugees and migrants in the UK. It was born out of a desire to create a supportive environment and network for Albanian speaking people fleeing war and seeking refuge and safety in the UK. The programme has since expanded to include the education and facilitation of integration of all Albanian-speaking people through the provision of resources, access to knowledge on UK systems, and access to employment by supporting members to gain qualifications.

Maidie Create was created by Harsharan after she moved to Barking and Dagenham and saw the high numbers of people that were homeless and vulnerable.

The organisation concentrates on creating programmes and events for the most vulnerable in our community to improve social inclusion. One of the most recent programmes being cooking classes with visually impaired residents in the Every One Every Day Ripple Road shop.

As an Organisational Member, Harsharan was able to become a key-holder of the Ripple Road shop and book the industrial kitchen when not in use by others, hence creating a safer space for the attendees. The users were able to explore safe cooking in the fully equipped kitchen facility.

The membership has also benefited her with networking opportunities and she is excited to skill up on the equipment in Everyone’s Warehouse which can then be shared with others.

Make A Difference At Sandies is a registered charity that offers counselling and therapy services to all ages, from children to the elderly, and aims to make mental health services more accessible at low cost for everyone within the community. The team of 16+ certified counsellors and trainees work from a charity shop in Becontree.

As an Organisational Member, Make A Difference At Sandies were able to hold counselling sessions in the Church Elm Lane shop outside of opening hours to make their services more accessible to the local community. The organisation benefited especially from becoming a key-holder to have exclusive use of the space which was paramount for the service they offer.

Make A Difference At Sandies are keen to explore the benefits of practical activities alongside their current service after seeing the benefit to many participating in Every One Every Day. Read more about MADAS on page 52.

Make Your Mark was created by local resident BobbieJo in 2019 and grew out of a desire to equip young people with access to resources, supplies, and opportunities that they might otherwise not have access to.

The first project called Holiday Pack Lunch Club was launched in June 2020 to provide food for children in the community as well as activity packs to keep children and young people busy.

Bobbie-Jo first started as an Office Manager for Every One Every Day and then went on to create her own organisation, inspired by the principles of the project.

Through Organisational Membership, Make Your Mark has regular access to the Ripple Road shop’s Community Kitchen to produce the pack lunches. They have also booked Everyone’s Warehouse for photoshoots with young people and benefited from networking opportunities especially through the key-holder network.

Bluebird Pictures is a production company based in Barking that creates films and documentaries. It started the World Cinema Film Festival, celebrating different cultures and communities with submissions in the form of short films, documentaries or animations. Bluebird Pictures aims to create more content that reflects the current world and issues of the working class, minorities and marginalised groups. The production company also hopes to grow the World Cinema Film Festival into a recognised international film festival working closely with the new Dagenham film studios with aims to help up-skill young people in the borough to get jobs in the film industry.

Bluebird Pictures founder, Joelle David, has shared her filmmaking skills and hosted ‘Women in film’ sessions as part of the programme of events at the Every One Every Day Ripple Road shop.

As an Organisational Member, Bluebird Pictures has also used Every One Every Day spaces as shoot locations.

ENABLING LOCAL PEOPLE AND ORGANISATIONS TO BUILDING A STRONGER AND BETTER-CONNECTED BOROUGH Amplify Barking and Dagenham is a community research project that ran between November 2018 and May 2020 to hear people’s views about where they live.

This research was led by The Young Foundation, in partnership with Community Resources and funded by Barking and Dagenham Council. Aiming to enable local people and organisations to develop ideas and solutions to build a stronger and better connected community, the project asked people to think about what local solutions could be, captured their ideas and organised co-creation workshops to support them to make them a reality.

As an Organisational Member, the project used Everyone’s Warehouse to host meetings and workshops and benefited from the promotion of events one the Every One Every Day online platform.

Project Embrace was inspired by the desire of founder Lekia to instil a healthy sense of pride and self esteem in her then 5 year-old daughter. This desire quickly grew into a wish to support the self esteem of other girls like her daughter who may have experienced negative associations when it comes to their afro textured hair.

Using speaking engagements, workshops and a remarkable billboard campaign, Project Embrace continues to challenge narrow beauty standards while also working to address and reinstate balance when it comes to the mis-representation of afro textured hair. The organisation aims to widen the idea of beauty and influence the advertising and media industry and society as a whole to be more inclusive in representation and embrace diversity wholeheartedly.

Project Embrace benefited from using the Learning Lab in Everyone’s Warehouse for filming purposes.

Youth Spot Bar is an organisation made up of two business partners, Amanda & Rachel, as well as 6 volunteers who come together to host fun and engaging activities and sessions. The organisation was started by Amanda in 2018 following a year which saw a lot of knife crime. Activities can be on anything from cooking sessions that allow young people to gain new skills, to sessions on how to come up with and develop business ideas. These sessions are designed to support and encourage positive change and positive choices.

Peer2Peer Education delivers peer-led educational workshops in schools and other youth organisations to provide and share information, advice and support on an array of youth related issues and situations.

The workshops are constantly evolving to ensure they deal with real life situations but some topics have included gun and knife crime, peer pressure or unhealthy relationships and many other pivotal situations and issues that many young people encounter. Peer2Peer Education works with diverse groups of young people aged 11-19, seeking to provide relevant and necessary support with a vision for all young people to grow up with the ability to make well informed decisions, to navigate a fulfilling career and to make a positive contribution to their communities.

The East End Women’s Museum is a small organisation dedicated to the powerful stories and diverse voices of women of east London. Established in 2015, the museum aims to share the amazing stories of pride, creativity, humour, resilience, resourcefulness and resistance of women in the borough. Committed to challenging gender inequalities and stereotypes, and supporting women and girls to share their own stories, it has operated as a website and a pop-up for 5 years, with temporary exhibitions, schools workshops, events and online content. The new home for the museum will be located in Barking Wharf Square from 2022 and will bring significant opportunities to grow audiences, offer new programmes, and increase the scale and impact of its work.

The Barking Community Recovery Team aims to support the recovery of service users, with mental health conditions, in the community and to enable them to live as independently as possible within their own home.

The recovery team is a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals including psychiatrists, psychologists, community psychiatric nurses, social workers, and occupational therapists.

As an Organisational Member, Barking Recovery Team have used the Every One Every Day shop in Ripple Road to host weekly sensory classes for adults with long-term mental health conditions between September and November 2019.

The Creative English programme is run by FaithAction, which is a national network of over 2,000 faith-based and community organisations seeking to serve their communities through social action. Creative English helps non English speakers, learn through fun games, activities and hold their classes over a variety of venues across Barking and Dagenham.

Each teaching session is filled with creative fun to keep learners engaged as they practice their English through scenarios inspired by reality. From visiting the doctor to the weekly shopping trips these sessions help re-enact real situations in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It also creates opportunities for learners who want to further their learning, volunteer, and take up opportunities in their local area. As Organisational Members, the team promoted these classes through the Every One Every Day shop spaces as well as accessing the spaces as key-holders after receiving certified training.

Business Launchpad offers complete and personalised business guidance and support to young entrepreneurs, aged 16-30, that face barriers from across London. The organisation enables them to start their own business, move into employment, education and training. The aim is to develop approaches that empower, support and encourage young people to become self-confident, have aspirations and fulfil their potential.

For the past 4 years, BLP have been engaging with local young people in Barking and Dagenham to understand their needs and challenges around youth enterprise through co-design services and offer support. The organisation used the Learning Lab and ran a business modelling workshop. Two Business Launchpad interns worked from Everyone’s Warehouse.

Organisational Membership also enabled BLP to promote opportunities from Every One Every Day to the young people it works with.

MUMS ON A MISSION SUPPORTING FAMILIES BY BUILDING CONFIDENCE AND RESILIENCE THROUGH EVENTS AND PROGRAMMES. Mums On a Mission supports vulnerable families in the community through peer advocacy service, brunches with designated workshops and intergenerational projects. The organisation started because of the founders’ own personal experiences of living in poverty, who decided to tackle the issues and create change for the sake of the next generation. The aim of the project is to build confidence, promote resilience and encourage cohesion and healthy life choices.

Mums On a Mission has successfully supported over 100 families with its current services. Its future plan is to help the community become sustainable and discover the resilience in unity.

Binta’s Kitchen creates and sells authentic Nigerian sauces that can be used as bases for foods from around the world as well as now expanding to versatile superfoods to promote wellness in the form of powders.

Binta’s Kitchen is named after owner Farhana’s mother.

Binta would cook delicious sauces for her family and her daughter knew there was a market for this!

As an Organisational Member, Farhana is a key-holder of the Ripple Road shop and regularly uses the kitchen facilities to record content for her social media and promotion. She’s often complimented on her page and asked where she films her videos with many other brands reaching out to her. Her slick and exciting content even attracted interest from the BBC with Vanessa Feltz recently interviewing her!

CONNECTING COMMUNITIES

TACKLING LONELINESS BY SUPPORTING ADULT RESIDENTS OF BARKING AND DAGENHAM TO CONNECT TO THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITY. Connecting Communities was a pilot project aimed at helping to remove the barriers that prevent adults in Barking and Dagenham from participating in their communities. It supported people to attend community spaces and events happening around the borough to broaden their networks and confidence. A ‘Connector’ would attend with them until they were happy to do so on their own.

Several Connectors introduced people to the Every One Every Day project and specifically found the Tea and Toast sessions a great space to start with. The team worked with the Connectors to make the residents as comfortable as possible and introduce them to the space and others when ready.

Some of the outcomes of this included participants going on to host sessions, make new friendships, build confidence and even going on to participate in the Collaborative Business Programmes.

A.R.A CLUB LTD worked in collaboration with Youth Spot Bar, who run regular sessions for children and young people. The aim was to support families which struggled to find childcare and to offer opportunities for their children and young people to engage in a safe outlet that encouraged them to build on their skills, learn new skills and build positive relationships within their local communities.

The organisation also aimed to reduce the number of children and young people who have nowhere to go. It hoped to achieve this by working with other local organisations and people within Barking and Dagenham. Team members of the A.R.A Club completed certified training with Every One Every Day membership and accessed the spaces along with the Youth Spot Bar team.

Kharal Masala is a food business selling healthy curry pastes, founded by local resident Rubina. It was created after Rubina participated in Pantry, the Collaborative Food Business Programme and was encouraged by her daughters who she has been cooking for for many years. Participating in Pantry and Bowled, with the support of the team, the equipment and resources available, the combined knowledge of the group and specialist training that was available, Rubina was able to learn about designing, production, branding and test trading in a safe environment.

Rubina has also been an integral part of the development of The Industrial Kitchen and joined the Good Food Collective with many of the residents she met through the programme.

She has now gone on to find additional support and is selling sauces through her website and distribution partners across London. She also supports women that are interested in starting home businesses.

OYIN’S CHOCOLATE OYIN IS A BEAN TO BAR CHOCOLATE MAKER. CREATING ARTISAN CHOCOLATES & NATURAL CACAO TEAS WITHOUT PRESERVATIVES. Oyin hand makes all her bean to bar dark chocolates which are made with very little unrefined cane sugar and aims to encourage an understanding of good tasting, natural chocolate. The cocoa beans are sourced directly from farmers in Nigeria, Ecuador and Peru at a premium fair price while supporting the farmer’s children in their education. She also encourages families to lead healthy lifestyles through holding chocolate workshops, sharing nutritional facts on confectionery and the process of making a chocolate bar from raw cocoa beans.

As a local resident,Oyin has hosted sessions in the Every One Every Day programmes around chocolate making and has participated in the Pantry and Bowled Collaborative Business Programmes. She was able to create and test produce through these programmes , build her local network as well as learn in a collaborative setting and have access to the spaces and equipment.

As an Organisational Member, Oyin benefited from using the spaces to create her product to sell as well as working with others as part of a food collective.

A FASHION DESIGN SCHOOL TO HELP BRIDGE THE GAP OF INEQUALITY IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY. Alpha Female Academy was created by Joyce in 2018 to work with BAME women from low socio-economic backgrounds who have a strong desire to either start their own businesses or work for major fashion houses.

The aim is to help bridge the gap of inequality in the fashion industry by enabling them to upskill and build confidence as well as creating support networks. Joyce participated in Collaborative Business Programmes and benefited from peer-to-peer sessions in Everyone’s Warehouse. After becoming an Organisational Member, she also used Everyone’s Warehouse to create video content for Alpha Female Academy and became a tutor for the Capsule Collection Collaborative Business Programme.

All experiences are open to beginners through to professionals.

Femi, AKA Sterling Reigns, the CEO of E3 Entertainment is a resident of Barking and Dagenham and aims to bring these creative services plus much more to local residents in the borough.

Femi has been able to host DJ workshops, utilise spaces, equipment and the networking opportunities with other organisations in the borough through his interactions with Every One Every Day. As Organisational Members, E3 Entertainment hope to build on this and the networking opportunities in the future.

A SCHOOL INTEGRATING WITHTHE LOCAL COMMUNITY TO SHARE INNOVATIVE LEARNING. Riverside School is based in the Barking Riverside area and houses Riverside Primary, Bridge and Secondary School combined. This collaborative structure known as Riverside Campus creates more opportunities for students to move freely between the different school structures, as and when the students’ educational needs benefit from doing so. The school aims to meet the needs of a school population that is rapidly growing in the immediate area by serving its local community and providing a high standard of education and support their aim of making ‘Excellence for All’ a realistic and possible goal.

As an Organisational Member, Riverside School is already using Everyone’s Warehouse spaces to host inspiring events for its students. This includes plans on using the Learning Lab for a photography workshops linked with the Smiling Boys Project and use of the Urban Garden for an art trail including an exhibition and performances.

TACKLING LONELINESS AND ISOLATION THROUGH SOCIAL ACTIVITIES FOR OLDER RESIDENTS. Di’s Diamonds is a female friendship group under the umbrella of Age UK Redbridge, Barking & Havering.

There is also a group called Diamond Geezers - aimed towards men and their interests.The aim of Di’s Diamonds is to tackle loneliness and isolation amongst residents aged 50+ and to encourage connection, engagement and creativity.

The members meet for social gatherings where they normally take part in fun activities, theatre visits, day trips out and park walks. During lockdown they have been using Zoom to stay connected with the support of the Every One Every Day team as Organisational Members. They are looking forward to things opening up so they can use Everyone’s Warehouse and the shop spaces for gatherings too.

East European Resource Centre is a charity organisation that provides information, advice and support to people from Central and Eastern Europe from the 2004 and 2007 EU accession countries: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Their vision for London to be a home to Eastern European migrants where they can make choices about their families, work and homes, and live fulfilled lives as respected members of local communities. Through their work they give voice and resources to Eastern European migrants who experience poverty, exploitation and social exclusion in order to help them to navigate British systems, develop confidence and skills, and improve integration within the UK. As Organisational Members, the charity has been able to meet and collaborate with residents involved with the Imagination Space, who offered child care services in the Warehouse whilst the workshops are running, They have also been inducted into the spaces with future sessions also planned.

SINCERELY OGHOSA A CONTENT CREATOR WHO WORKS WITH BRANDS AND ENCOURAGES HER AUDIENCE TO LIVE BETTER LIVES. Oghosa is a full time influencer working with brands and posting creative content using her voice to highlight and explore issues around black women and feminism.

As a resident of the borough, she came across the Every One Every Day shop on Church Elm Lane when walking past and being invited in by one of the team. She has since used the Light Room - a photo/film studio set up by residents in the shop, extensively for her content creation.

As an Organisational Member she has benefited from being a key-holder and being able to access the space and equipment when the shop was not in use by others which has helped with the noise reduction when filming video content.

Oghosa has a large local, national and international following and she hopes this will continue to expand.

Her other work has included working with young people, teaching photography skills, which are then used to create projects with community groups, such as the elderly, to build rapport and build relationships. Her curation work revolves around highlighting women’s stories and disability issues with the last exhibition, ‘Visibly, Invisible’ created for Tate Britain as part of the Late at Tate programme.

OOZE Drinks was created by Giuseppe Baidoo with the aim to reduce food waste and raise awareness about the impact of food waste. The company creates natural drinks that are free from added sugar and preservatives, vegan and cold pressed, all from saving wonky fruits.

Giuseppe also created a sister company called Gusto Snacks producing healthy fruit crisps from air dried wonky fruits. OOZE Drinks benefited from using the Ripple Road shop to shoot a crowdfunding campaign video. Giuseppe also acted as a mentor sharing his experiences and knowledge in food business for a teen project in the Martins Corner Shop as part of the Every One Every Day programme.

Events2Empower is an organisation that tries to engage with residents in the Barking community by offering free events. Most of the past events have been organised in and around Baking Library and with the support of Barking & Dagenham Council. The organisation emerged out of a desire to increase the awareness and recognition of Indian festivals such as Diwali, Holi, Karwachauth, Baisakhi, and many more.

Through these events, Events2Empower hopes to support members of the community and provide a contact point to help break down barriers that can lead to loneliness and isolation. The organisation emphasises on empowering women, especially from Indian background through organising and managing events and getting involved in the community.

Bow Arts Trust aims to create sustainable communities of artists in localities-including low cost accomodation, and to enrich the creative education of children in schools in those areas.

Bow Arts Trust have previously rented a studio space to Every One Every Day during the early stages of the project. As an Organisational Member, Bow Arts had planned to use Everyones Warehouse for a large event in 2020 which was postponed due to the lockdown. They hope to use the spaces for events in the future.

That project came to an end and Aislinn has now started a poetry youth project called The Take Over. The Take Over runs a summer school for young poets in the borough to build their own platform to create and share poetry.

A GROUP OF STUDENTS WHO WANT TO RAISE ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS IN THE BOROUGH. Greatfields School is a secondary school which opened in September 2016, in the heart of the Gascoigne community in Barking. It aims to make positive contributions within the community and give the students opportunities to achieve within extra-curricular activities. The Eco Squad was started by students to raise environmental awareness.

Greatfields School worked with Every One Every Day to enable more connections between the community and students. Sessions like Tea and Toast and Street Ball, were hosted within the school as part of the Every One Every Day programme. The school also became an Adopt a Tree collection point and the Eco Squad was involved in co-hosting tree planting sessions.

After an induction at Everyone’s Warehouse, they wanted to explore inviting students in the space right before the pandemic started. Since the organisation was started in 2018, by local resident John Akinde, WAV CTRL have hosted a number of in person live music experiences and showcased a wide variety of musical talent that call Barking and Dagenham their home. WAV CTRL also use their online platforms to promote the awareness of the depth of talent that the borough of Barking & Dagenham is ready and willing to share with the world. Ramis-Ark Global also offers a free legal advice drop-in clinic in Havering and the surrounding areas (including Barking & Dagenham). This clinic is available for general legal advice but also has a focus on advice for victims of domestic abuse, youth violence relating to crime, gangs and knife crime. The free legal advice drop-in clinic also offers advice to persons with undocumented status who may be homeless regarding ways that they might access opportunities for education, employment, housing and employability training as a means to transition back into active society and independent living.

Sport Inspired are a platform for social change. They connect a diverse community of stakeholders to create sustainable networks that help children and young people from deprived communities to thrive.

Through engaging with 12 to 18 year olds as young leaders, Sport Inspired are able to support younger children, developing their own skills and giving back to the community simultaneously. This and many other methods allow Sport Inspired to instil self-belief, increase activity levels, improve wellbeing, and bring fractured communities together in new ways.

Since setting up they have inspired over 80,000 children to be more active and delivered over 400 programmes. As an Organisational Member, doing lots of work in Barking and Dagenham, Sports Inspired have been in conversation about using some of the Every One Every Day spaces for their events.

CATIA BAXTER A LOCAL RESIDENT WITH A PASSION FOR FOOD AND NOW PART OF SEVERAL COLLECTIVES Catia cultivated an early love for food growing up in Portugal with her grandparents. She remembers baking cakes to donate and sell at her local church.

When she found out about Every One Every Day at the beginning of the project, she participated in various projects with her children, naturally drawn to the food based ones such as Great Cooks.

After building her confidence through these projects, Catia joined the Collaborative Business Programmes Bowled, Design Make Sell and Imagination Space, where she built a great network of like minded friends.

She then continued her journey with many of them through the Good Food Collective.

As an Organisational Member, Catia has booked various work spaces including The Industrial Kitchen in Everyone’s Warehouse and the Community Kitchen in the Ripple Road shop. Most recently, she joined the Wax Works business programme and developed making skills as well as her catering experience.

After participating in various Every One Every Day sessions and joining the Collaborative Business Programme Bowled, she was able to meet others that had similar interests, receive certified training and learn many new skills whilst sharing hers with others.

After meeting like minded residents through the programme and going on to join a local food collective together, they accessed The Industrial Kitchen as well as the Community Kitchen in the Ripple Road shop to make meals together which were then distributed to the community during the first lockdown. The food made reflected the diverse community of the borough. Helen mentions that the support from the Every One Every Day team was brilliant and it meant that they could do things properly and thoroughly.

Through sessions and Collaborative Business Programmes held at Every One Every Day, Elizabeth was able to develop a wonderful product while sharing and gaining skills with other local residents.

For Elizabeth, Organisational Membership has been very helpful thanks to the key-holder system, which gives access to Everyone’s Warehouse and The Industrial Kitchen outside of Every One Every Day’s opening hours, as well as access to high quality equipment.

CAKE THAT! GLUTEN FREE CAKE HEAVEN. Cake That! is a baking organisation founded by Daphna. Daphna always loved baking and when she discovered that she was gluten-free, she started to create her own cakes to fit her new lifestyle.

With Cake That! she wants to bring more awareness to people with allergies and provide more options for them to enjoy. She not only sells her delicious cakes online to coffee shops and individuals but provides catering for events. She shares her recipes to help others and bakes and gives cakes to the NHS every week.

As an Organisational Member, she has accessed certified training and is interested in using The Industrial Kitchen in the Warehouse once restrictions are lifted. Daphna has been sharing her baking skills with residents on the Every One Every Day online platform since the 1st lockdown started.

HOSTING ACTIVITIES FOR PARENTS AND CHILDREN TO HELP EXTEND THEIR NETWORKS WITHIN THE BOROUGH. The Hug Support Group is a small organisation in Barking and Dagenham, aimed at helping families and new parents find emotional and practical support. They provide a safe non-judgmental community space for the exploration of issues, topics and problems that parents share within the group. This space enables parents to then share experiences, learn from each other and create friendships which support service users to grow in skills and confidence within the community.

Valeria Giannuzzi, one of the co-founders of the organisations, first joined Every One Every Day for the Wonderful Place To Grow Up project where parents were able to plan and support each other through home-schooling and use our shop spaces for participatory sessions. Since then she has been involved in some of the other projects including Tomorrow Today Streets.

Cherry Galz are a feminist art collective currently based across the UK and Germany. They provide an online directory showcasing works from many talented female creatives. Cherry began as a series of events celebrating feminist perspectives and photography.

The first Cherry was organised by students from Falmouth and Exeter University aiming to showcase work from various creative and academic courses such as photography, poetry and art. They soon became Cherry Galz.

The platform provides a space for members to share and develop their work in the form of personalised portfolio pages, radio shows, virtual exhibitions and an online magazine called Zest.

As Organisational Members, the team have been introduced to several local arts organisations who can help support their objective to grow their presence in the borough and hope to use the spaces soon.

BLACK LIVES MATTER 83 BARKING & DAGENHAM (BLM) AN ORGANISATION HIGHLIGHTING THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT THROUGH BARKING & DAGENHAM VIA EVENTS, FORUMS AND EDUCATION.

BLM Barking & Dagenham is a non-profiting organisation which aims to push the Black Lives Matter movement throughout Barking and Dagenham and surrounding areas. It started after international protests held in 2020 to highlight race issues in society.

The group formed to highlight the issues more locally.

BLM Barking and Dagenham organises events to highlight black voices and stories and empower black individuals within the local community whilst educating all members of the community.

The organisation is working on projects to raise awareness and create change in the national curriculum for schools. As an Organisational Member, BLM Barking and Dagenham were part of the Ted Countdown panel discussion.

THE SOURCE, BARKING CHURCHES UNITE A DAY CENTRE PROVIDING HELP AND SUPPORT FOR RESIDENTS IN NEED FROM FOOD TO SERVICES. Barking Churches Unite was set up to bring churches together and The Source was a place where people could come and receive help and support. The Source has a shop unit in Vicarage Fields. Before Covid, the organisation used to offer a free buffet meal for those who were in need. It was a Day Centre where people could receive help and support, from drugs and alcohol services to DWP support and GP services.

During the pandemic, The Source moved to the Barking Learning Centre and offered a takeaway service of a hot meal, drinks, snacks and packed lunch.

The organisation aims to develop and build its services again and offer more diversity of services including community support groups. The Source benefited from connecting with Every One Every Day and its network of residents, some of which attended The Source as well as Every One Every Day sessions. It also hopes to benefit from using the spaces in the future.

AN ORGANISATION TO EMPOWER PEOPLE TO ACHIEVE THEIR TRUE POTENTIAL THROUGH PLANTING MINDFUL SEEDS OF SELF EXPANSION. Every Person Is Capable (EPIC) combines arts and culture to uplift individuals and communities to improve mental wellbeing, discover forms of self expression and share tools to become more self-aware.

The organisation officially started in June 2019 and has received funding from the National Lottery, Mayor Of London and London Community Fund to run various projects in London including its flagship event called the EPIC Jam. EPIC’s hope for the future is to continue to grow sustainably and keep planting seeds in people giving them hope for a brighter future.

As an Organisational Member, EPIC uses the Learning Lab for break-dancing sessions every 2 weeks and Vish, Co-Director of the organisation, also tutored college students with their work experience in Everyone’s Warehouse.

Eastside Youth is a youth charity centre and currently work across East London. The team is made up of former youth workers with over 10 years of experience. They work on community justice and empowerment of young people. They work to ensure that all young people are directed to opportunities that meet their needs.

Firstly to create projects and scale up their existing Young Person’s Leadership programmes in collaboration with Every One Every Day and tie in with existing projects in the borough.

Plantastic is a shared growing and gardening space based in Dagenham, which holds the provision of outdoor space for those who live in flats as one of their important priorities. Started by local resident Kathy, Plantastic emerged out of her love of gardening and growing, joined with the idea of community spaces where residents of the borough could meet, share growing skills and make wonderful treats and meals from the things they grow together.

Organisational Membership has made regular access to an industrial kitchen possible so products can be prototyped and prepared. The Ripple Road shop has also been a useful access point which Kathy has been able to use to host cooking workshops and put together a Plantastic recipe book.

Kathy also benefited from networking opportunities especially through her participation in Collaborative Business Programme which led to meeting like-minded residents and getting involved in the Good Food Collective.

THE BETTER FOOD SHED IS A FOOD DISTRIBUTION PROJECT COMMITTED TO PUTTING FARMERS AND GROWERS AHEAD OF PROFIT. Growing Communities has been transforming the relationship between Londoners and their food for the past 20 years. Connecting local farmers with hungry customers, the organisation has had a presence in Barking and Dagenham since 2012 when they were granted a 10 year lease, on the site of what became Dagenham Farm by Barking & Dagenham Council.

Growing Communities connected with Every One Every Day at the beginning of the project. When they decided to set up a non-for-profit food distribution project Better Food Shed two years ago, they were able to partner to cohabit in Everyone’s Warehouse.

Since then, Growing Communities also benefited from the use of Everyone’s Warehouse Industrial Kitchen facilities during lockdown for the FoodNet project, creating and delivering just under 500 individual meals by the end of the project.

WAX ATELIER A COLLECTIVE MANUFACTURING CANDLES & WAXED TEXTILES RE-VISITING TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUES OF HANDCRAFTING. Wax Atelier was founded in 2017 by multidisciplinary designers Lola Lely and Yesenia Thibault-Picazo in London. The aim is to re-visit traditional techniques ranging from candle dipping, paper making, to crafted textiles using natural wax. Making becomes a tool to experience the interconnection between the natural world and material culture.

Through organisational collaboration between Every One Every Day and Wax Atelier, local residents have been able to gain skills and experience in the making world through a partnership called Wax:Works. Based out of Everyone’s Warehouse, Wax:Works is a collaborative business programme that brings together local residents and Wax Atelier, to create living wage work and produce sustainable products.

OUTDOOR PEOPLE A NON-PROFIT SOCIAL ENTERPRISE LOOKING TO MAKE GETTING OUTDOORS EASY ESPECIALLY FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES. Recognising that adults are the gatekeepers to children’s experiences, Outdoor People work with the whole family, so together they enjoy the outdoors and create shared memories, build up their confidence to go outside regularly and have the kit and knowledge to go camping with family and friends. The organisation also has an online shop and community space and offers consultancy services.

We spoke to their Barking-based ‘Wild Walks’ Lead Bethany Martin is working to expand Outdoor People’s activities into Barking and Dagenham. These Wild Walks are described as “adventures for children to take their adults on” exploring the greenery in our neighbourhoods. The Every One Every Day team supported outdoor People to connect with the The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.Now hope to be exploring local parks, meeting local trees and resident foxes, birds and neighbours in due course.

PPL PWR is a non-profit company, started in 2015.

As a volunteer organisation putting on stalls at festivals to educate about renewable energy and grew into a larger organisation providing events, talks, educational workshops and interactive quizzes around sustainability and combating climate change. Their aim is to build a community of active citizens who change their practices to create a greener future.

PPL PWR are excited to reach out to the local community in Barking and Dagenham through their Organisational Membership and access Every One Every Day spaces to co-design collaborative making projects.

RIVER RODING TRUST A CHARITY PRESERVING, PROTECTING AND RESTORING THE RIVER RODING.

The River Roding Trust emerged from a desire to establish a new model for those living in boats to positively impact the River Roding and its local area.

Having set his sights on the largely inaccessible and increasingly derelict area of the Roding, Paul Powelsland became the first live-aboard boater that the upper river had ever seen in 2017. He has since been joined by a cohort of boaters and local residents who came together to form the River Roding Trust.

The funds raised by the trust help to fund restoration projects as well as many other things that help make the River Roding a wholesome environment to live in.

Thanks to a donation of Woodland Trust trees from Every One Every Day, the River Roding Trust were able to plant 100 trees in Harts Lane, a local area adjacent to the River Roding.

SEADS UK are a collection of artists, researchers, designers, engineers and educators presenting participatory artwork to draw out dialogue around climate solutions and synergies between nature and technology.

They are currently exhibiting on London’s Southbank as part of Proposition Studio’s Terra Nexus immersive show and are keen to collaborate in upcoming Everyone’s Warehouse and Ecology Centre sessions. Their boat Gaia is also moored on the River Roding acting as a community hub and workshop space with plans for outreach community events in the coming year.

A NETWORK CONNECTING RESIDENTS IN THE BOROUGH WITH AN INTEREST IN CREATING GREENER PLACES AND SPACES. The Greening Network was created through the Citizens’ Alliance Network for people and organisations across the borough to collaborate on green actions and information-exchange. Since 2020, from conversations with residents, they realised there was a growing desire to create a network where anyone who was interested in making the borough greener could connect by sharing ideas and any projects they are involved with.

The need for refuge in green spaces became increasingly important during lockdown for physical & mental health, wellbeing and also as places outdoors to meet family and friends. As Organisational Members, the network has promoted the community meetings on the Every One Every Day platform to attract more interest and contributions.

RECONNECTIONS HELPING OVER-65S TO REDISCOVER OLD INTERESTS AND MAKE NEW FRIENDS IN THEIR COMMUNITIES-TO HELP REDUCE LONELINESS AND ISOLATION Reconnections is a service created by the charity to rediscover old interests, connect into community spaces and make new friends. Chrissy, who works on the project, and her team help support residents by introducing them to local opportunities and events. The aim is to bridge connections by introducing residents to their community in a gentle supported approach.

Chrissy first came across Every One Every Day whilst working on a local project with the British Red Cross and hopes to continue the collaboration through Reconnections.

Reconnections started collaborating closely with Every One Every Day during lockdown by signposting its service participants to online sessions and especially non-digital based projects like the Window Project. The organisation is now excited to use the spaces and become key-holders.

TOYNBEE HALL HELPING AND SUPPORTING RESIDENTS TO HAVE MORE OF A SAY IN THEIR COMMUNITIES FOR SOCIAL CHANGE. Based in the East End of London since 1884, Toynbee Hall works with the local community and a wide range of partners to shape a fairer and happier future.

ToynBee Hall offers high quality advice and support, engaging communities to have a more meaningful say over the things that affect them. They support the community to identify systemic failures which create exclusion and hardship, They collaborate with the people affected by those failures to investigate the issues, design effective solutions, and to influence effectively for change.

Throughout their 135 years their story is one of pioneering new solutions for poverty, working within communities and giving people the skills and knowledge they need to help themselves while working to influence opinion and to change the systems and policies that affect people today. Books by MILE was created by two local residents, Irina Goncherenko and Liliana Hristova. Together, they write and publish children’s books, lead workshops and create and make games and crafts. Inspired by their passion for writing and their kids’ storytelling, they are happy to share their love for books with their readers.

Liliana and Irina have both been part of the Every One Every Day network since the beginning. They have hosted sessions like Story Box and were part of Collaborative Business Programmes like Design, Make, Sell and Imagination Space, where they tested their business ideas and were able to sell their book and related products in a Pop-Up shop.

As an Organisational Member, Books by MILE want to continue to test trade and have access to the spaces to experiment hosting creative workshops.

Keep Britain Tidy is a UK-based independent environmental charity. The organisation campaigns to reduce litter, improve local places and prevent waste.

The project is delivered by Keep Britain Tidy on behalf of Renewi and the East London Waste Authority. The Recycle for Your Community project provides free curriculum-linked workshops, special projects, support to improve recycling facilities, Eco-Schools support and more to schools and community groups in the London Boroughs of Barking & Dagenham, Havering, Newham and Redbridge.

Remap is a charity that helps people with disabilities, of all ages, live more independent lives. Through their network of skilled volunteers, Remap facilitates the design of custom made equipment and bespoke aids for people if they are not commercially available.

Their aim is to improve the quality of life and independence, responding to thousands of requests every year and their service is free of charge. Remap covers the whole of the UK and completes 3,500 projects every year. They invite people to use their imagination to determine what kind of support they need depending on the challenges they face and work with them to devise a gadget.

Radio Ballads has been developed in partnership with the Borough of Barking and Dagenham to create a series of collaborative artist residencies and commissions. Radio Ballads is part of New Town Culture – a pioneering programme of artistic and cultural activity taking place in adult and children’s social care across the Borough responding to the incredible stories, knowledge and skills of the residents of Barking and Dagenham, delivering a programme of workshops, exhibitions, radio broadcasts, live performances and courses aimed at people using social care services.

The project hopes to unlock the value of art and culture for all our communities. Its ambition is to support social workers and carers to try out new ways of working to enhance the brilliant work they already do.As Organisational Members, the team have been keen to use the neighbourhood shops as venues for various sessions.

Unveiled is a small company with big ideas for positive, sustainable change.

They repurpose empty buildings and land, work with a diverse network of creative community developers to co-create enterprise, education and engagement opportunities and empower communities to create systemic change. Un-veiled also work with decisionmaking bodies, organisations and businesses to rethink their management practises, embedding social values such as engagement, participation and wellbeing.

Unveiled’s biggest project to date was the repurposing of an iconic 7-storey newspaper building in Hastings town centre that was previously empty for 30 years.

Unveiled turned it into a vibrant multi-purpose space for the community and supported a community-led business to purchase it.

As Organisational Members, Unveiled have supported the co-creation of the Bare Essentials pop-up shop through participating in discussions.
