The Good, the Bad and all the Fun.
Two years after working from home, we returned to the office this September with mixed feelings. Many of us looked forward to the fun of physically meeting colleagues we spoke to daily but had only seen via Zoom or Teams calls, while some of us painfully dreaded and anticipated the stress of waking up early and the madness of Lagos traffic. Two weeks down the line, how have we fared so far? Some of our colleagues shared with us their experiences working from the office

“My experience so far has been good. I love the fact that I get to see everyone, and we get to bond, but coming to the office every day… (sighs deeply) has been super draining. These days I look so tired and worn out. But regardless of the stress, I don’t mind us working from the office, but not every day.”

“To be honest, I enjoy the presence of people. I love the opportunity to dress up every day or more frequently than I normally would. Although, the stress of commuting will require a lot of getting used to.”
“Oh, it’s been great! I like the fact that we can leave at 3pm. It’s been hectic though, but we gotta do what we gotta do”
“My back to office experience has been wonderful. I’ve gotten to meet my team members. I recently joined the company and we’ve been working remotely all this while, so it’s been nice seeing new faces and it’s been a whole lot of fun. Yeah, it been nice to meet with people and know more about the business.”

“Coming to the office has been refreshing and amazing. It’s good to see everybody together. Just that sometimes when I wake up in the morning, and I really dread coming to the office but being here makes all the difference. So yes. I’m for working from the office if it’s not every day.”
“I like the fact that we get to meet our colleagues that we’ve not met in a very long time. The experience has been awesome because I’m connecting with people, and it’s been fun coming to work. I love it!”
“The connection, the bond and getting to know my colleagues has been fun but it’s been a hectic experience. Overall, it’s been a good one for me.”
Human Resources
“I’m happy to be back, at least for the sake of social interaction and integration with people. We’ve been away for 2 years, so it’s a beautiful thing to be back on site. The collaboration is improving the work.”

It can be challenge to make significant and lasting improvements to your health and wellbeing while working from the office, but the good news is that you can make a difference. Here are four ways to make changes that you can stick to, and enjoy as part of your daily work-from-office routine:
1.Build more activity into your commute: This could mean walking or jogging part of the way to work. If you take public transport, you could get off your bus early and walk the rest of the way. Walking from our car park, which is about 3 to 5 minutes away from the office, can also do the trick. This is a simple way to build up fitness, strength and stamina, and you may even reduce your commuting costs!
2.Build more activity into your working day.
Use the Gym: Parthian HMO offers subsidized gym membership in some choice gyms across Lagos. It’s a great way to start, if you can commit to using one close to the office after work.
Take regular screen breaks: It’s easier said than done, but aim to get away from your chair and screen once in a while. For instance, you can stand up to do stretching exercises, take phone calls while standing, or get up to talk to people rather than emailing them. A regular alarm on your online calendar or phone can be a useful reminder to take a break.
Hold stand-up or even walking meetings: This is an effective way to get you and your team out of your seats, and to think about your activity levels
3.Go outside (or just be more active) at lunchtime: Fewer people are taking lunch breaks, often preferring to grab a snack or sandwich at their workstations. Breaking this cycle can be tough when you’re busy. But making an effort to leave your desk at lunchtime, even for a short walk around the block, can be beneficial. It can flex your joints, boost blood circulation, and allow for mental recharging and reflection.
Pedometers, fitbit® watches and app-based activity trackers can provide activity goals to work toward during your working day.
4.Remember your diet. Healthy behaviour change has to combine exercise and diet to be effective. Research has shown that, even if you’re relatively active, carrying extra weight can significantly raise your risk of heart problems. So, choose the healthy options when ordering your meals, or take your own nutritious food to work. And avoid staying at your desk to eat it!
Don’t hesitate to reach out to HR or your line manager for support when needed.
