Students Band Together To Keep Parsippany Streets Clean

Members of the Parsippany High School (PHS) Environmental Club volunteered their time and effort to clean up Parsippany and pick up litter around the township.

Members of the club participated in the Keep Morris County Litter Free educational program, which is part of the New Jersey Clean Communities Program’s statewide campaign.

The Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority sponsored the clean-up event, providing the kids with gloves, bags and a campaign banner.

The PHS Environmental Club, advised by Nancy Lennon and Monika Castillo, organized and participated in the cleanup with several other club members, such as Mahi Patel, Maira Can, Vanessa

Sanchez and Yashasvi Nekkanti.

On May 11, the students spent two hours collecting litter and covering two acres of Parsippany High School grounds, resulting in many bags of recyclables and garbage.

“The Parsippany High School PTSA and President Liz Kadian supplied refreshments for the group, which was very much appreciated,” the club said.

Because of the students’ participation, the Parsippany High School Environmental Club will receive a $600 grant to purchase recycling supplies.

Recently, the township was also awarded a $127,790 Clean Communities grant by the Department of Environmental

Protection.

More than $24 million was distributed to municipal and county governments throughout the state to beautify neighborhoods, improve water quality, reduce localized flooding, and protect natural habitats.

The program is supported by taxes paid by businesses that manufacture litter-generating products, as well as penalties collected for litter-related violations.
