Greystone Park

Not only did Greystone Park State Hospital consist of the famous main building (shown on this postcard), but there were many outbuildings and private houses within the sprawling complex. All of these buildings were torn down in stages. The 1876 main building was demolished in 2015 despite a fair amount of community opposition.

In the early-2000s, I photographed one of these abandoned houses, which would have been located on Lowery Street is behind the main building. Many houses, sheds, and other structures were in the same general area.
Looking westward toward Lowery Street, this present-day view from the foot of Central Avenue shows that everything has returned to grass and trees. One would never know that the massive Greystone Park Hospital and the houses surrounding it had never existed.
