Summer Learning Continues in Parsippany Schools!

When the school district closed in March, we were proud to be able to offer Chromebooks and hotspots to students in need. This enabled our students to continue instruction virtually and to connect with their teachers, counselors, and other specialists. When we knew that the school year would continue to operate remotely through June, district leaders made the decision to keep Chromebooks in students’ hands and plan for a summer learning opportunity.

Enter the Summer Stepstones Program, a free and optional academic enrichment program for Parsippany students entering Grades 1-9. The program, which runs for four weeks from July 27 to August 21, has enrolled more than 1100 elementary school students and nearly 800 middle school and rising 9th grade students.

Elementary students receive online lessons in literacy and mathematics taught by our smart and creative Parsippany teachers. There are four (4) one-hour sessions offered daily to students in Literacy and Mathematics. Students may attend as many sessions as they wish. A menu of lesson topics is shared at the beginning of each week to guide students and their families.

Students entering Grades 6-9 are engaged with mathematics teachers and receive valuable instruction in foundational skills that will be expected in the new school year.

A Summer Assignment List has also been posted on each middle and high schools’ websites and contains, among other activities, summer reading requirements for all students entering Grades 6-12. A high degree of student choice has been provided in the area of summer reading

Finally, let’s not forget our own amazing town libraries and their annual Summer Reading Program for children. Sign up to participate in the Parsippany Library’s Summer Reading Program. Students will keep track of reading through READsquared, which is available by clicking here.

Thanks to our hard-working teachers and students, the learning doesn’t end in June. What’s on your summer reading list?
