News of the School Report from the Head of School

Early in my career I had the opportu-

nity to teach at the Lawrenceville School, a campus near Princeton, NJ. The great landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, who created Central Park as well as other icons of America’s landscape, also designed Lawrenceville’s campus. Olmsted’s vision was that landscape informed practice and that the great American campus was a product of organic landscape and bucolic space. Put differently, Olmsted understood intuitively that a campus informs teaching and learning and has a profound influence on the temperament of the community as whole.

Olmsted’s vision made a deep impression on me, and when I first visited Park Tudor I was immediately struck by the manner in which the campus combines its natural landscape with stately and refined buildings. This synthesis of “place and space” is the central ingredient of our school’s campus and a key element to maintain as we renovate and expand our physical plant.

Importantly, this congruence of landscape and practice informed the work of Blanchard and Associates, who updated the school’s master plan in 2014 with the explicit goal of further refining the school’s aesthetic. Blanchard termed his vision for the school “Buildings in a Park,” evoking the master planning of Olmsted and other master designers.

Needless to say, Olmsted would be pleased.

As our Strategic Plan (PT2020) developed, we also worked hard to coordinate it with our Master Plan, understanding that place and space have critical intersections with our vision for academics and community. Indeed, one critical aspect of the strategic plan is to enhance our sense of “community” by creating gathering places and shared spaces on campus. In addition, we have been intentional in creating a unifying theme of “connecting classroom, campus and community,” which marries our work in “community” with that of “academics” and “sustainability” (the three prongs of PT2020). While this connection is perhaps best seen in the evolving nature of the academic program and in our development of Community-Engaged Learning (CEL), it

also has a campus planning component.

To that end, over the last few months we have initiated a number of campus beautification projects to enhance the look of campus. This work has also allowed us to identify places to gather and build community.

The Cagle Gate, dedicated in 2013, was created to improve access to campus and to articulate academic and community space. The space is ideal for an outdoor class and it has quickly become the symbolic entrance space for freshman and the triumphant exit for seniors. In that sense, the connection of “campus” and “community” is made explicit and the gate serves multiple purposes.

As Steve Cagle ’71 noted, “This gate and pathway are important because they serve to re-establish the Head of School’s residence as an easily accessible and vital part of the Park Tudor experience, and provide an attractive welcoming connection to the campus on its western side.”

Other projects have shared a similar focus. Recently, for example, we dedicated a common space near the tennis facility in honor of our colleague Debbie Stuart Everett ’69. Made possible by a generous gift to the school, the space is intended for informal and formal gatherings as a community.

Our seniors have been using the location for senior breakfasts and other gatherings, and our students in general have identified it as an ideal location to get together before and after athletic contests.

Finally, and due to another anonymous gift, we have begun the most significant articulation of “connecting classroom, cam-

pus and community” to-date by creating a gathering space between Clowes Commons and the Middle School. While the project has a pragmatic function, serving to connect the Middle School with the Commons, the central theme of this project was to define an area where students, parents, and faculty could gather to talk, engage in academic conversations, and enjoy the natural beauty of the campus. Of equal importance is the space in front of the Middle School, which has also undergone a similar renovation and activation as an area for formal and informal learning and as a natural extension of the classroom.

Looking ahead, we are excited by the possibilities of our holdings north of the current campus. As you may recall, several years ago we purchased most of the land north of campus, extending our borders to 75th St. This was a critical move for the school, guaranteeing that we can control the development of our perimeter and affording us the opportunity to address longstanding issues like ingress and egress. It will also allow us to more fully develop our academic program and our efforts to build community, all the while remaining financially and environmentally sustainable.

In the coming months and years, we will continue to look for opportunities to further develop the natural beauty of the campus and to connect that campus more fully with our classrooms and local community.

Park Tudor Announces the Jan Guffin Distinguished Teaching Chair

P

ark Tudor has announced its first-ever endowed teaching chair. Established to honor the distinguished teaching career of Dr. Jan Guffin and his leadership in creating and directing Park Tudor’s signature Global Scholars program, the Jan Guffin Distinguished Teaching Chair will help to ensure that Park Tudor continues to be at the forefront of developing and sustaining signature educational programs.

To date, Park Tudor has raised more than $500,000 towards its goal of $1 million to endow the Jan Guffin Distinguished Teaching Chair. A lead gift of $250,000 from Al and Kathy Hubbard, together with their three children Katie ’06, Sara ’06 and Will ’04, helped to propel Park Tudor forward on this important initiative. Katie, Sara and Will Hubbard all participated in the Global Scholars program under Dr. Guffin’s leadership.

n enthusiastic crowd of students, parents, faculty, alumni, classmates, friends and family gathered to dedicate the new Debbie Stuart Everett Patio on Friday, September 11. Dr. Miller welcomed the crowd and noted Debbie’s innumerable contributions to Tudor Hall and Park Tudor, which will continue as Debbie stays on at Park Tudor to coordinate a variety of strategic initiatives. President of the board, Rob Brown ’79, talked about the sense of history that Debbie brings to the school, and remarked that Debbie has truly helped to make Park Tudor what it is today. Kishan Shaw 10 spoke on behalf of the alumni, and emphasized Debbie’s commitment to

The faculty member chosen to hold the Jan Guffin Distinguished Teaching Chair will lead Park Tudor’s Global Scholars program, which provides highly able students with a liberal arts program that is competitive with the best schools in the United States and abroad. Nearly half of all Park Tudor juniors participate in the program, which features an introductory philosophy class, a community service requirement, and a four-year foreign language requirement, modeled on the International Baccalaureate Program, with a focus on selfdirected learning modeled on the Alverno College Assessment Program - a one-hour public presentation of independent research, a half-hour question and answer period, an evaluation by a five-member panel composed of four professional people and one peer, and a self-evaluation narrative.

“Through his establishment of the Global Scholars program at Park Tudor, Jan has shaped what we teach and how we teach it,” said Dr. Matthew D. Miller, Head of School for Park Tudor. “We are thrilled that Jan’s legacy will continue long after his retirement through the Jan Guffin Distinguished Teaching Chair, and that we will continue to be able to provide this extraordinary opportunity for generations of future students.”

In her remarks, Debbie noted that while many things have changed during her years at Park Tudor, the sense of family and community remains the same. The new patio is emblematic of that sense of community, and has already become a gathering place for students and faculty, with its excellent vantage point near the tennis courts. New Landscaping on Campus

P

ark Tudor students welcomed several landscaping improvements on campus this fall, thanks to an unanticipated, restricted gift. As a result of this gift, the school was able to complete a landscaping project between Clowes Commons and the Middle School, as well as a project by the Middle School drop-off. Both projects have long been under consideration and will advance the campus master plan completed in 2013.

The first project more gracefully connects Clowes Commons with the Middle School by creating intentional places for students and faculty to gather and meet; the second project has created a more park-like transition between the academic and athletic areas of campus.

These projects further our master plan’s goal of honoring the original vision of the campus and highlighting its landscape and beauty. As the donor noted, “I am excited to support the school and to enhance the look of what is already an incredible and compelling campus; Park Tudor served my children extremely well and will one day also serve my grandchildren.”

Middle School Marks WaterWeek

Middle School students marked their

second annual WaterWeek, in support of Project:Well. Joining forces with an organization called Charity:Water, for the second year the Middle School has committed to funding a well project in a developing nation. Through Project:Well, Middle School students have been educated about a serious global issue and have begun to develop a greater appreciation for everyday resources. Last year, the efforts of our Middle School students fully funded a well project in the Tigray region of Ethiopia.

Each day during WaterWeek, students learned about water through classroom lessons and activities. The Middle School hosted a guest speaker from Charity:Water to help the students learn more about the

organization and its mission, and also had a “Dry Day,” with water and facilities in the Middle School not available for use.

Students and faculty used the bathroom facilities and water fountains in the gym, and students were asked to carry two one-gallon milk jugs filled with water when walking to the gym. The milk jugs are representative of the much heavier jerry cans that are carried several miles daily to retrieve water in many developing nations.

To raise funds for another well project, the Middle School sold water bottles throughout WaterWeek. In addition, each grade level joined together to participate in a “Water Walk” as another fundraiser.

The students have learned that a well does not simply improve the lives of those who receive it; it is life-changing. In all, the Middle School raised $12,381.76 for Project:Well.

Nine Park Tudor Students Studied in Spoleto Over the Summer

Dassow, Annie Dora, Alyce Hammer, Maggie Johnston, Emily Neher, Baxter Rogers, and Natalie Smitherman attended the Spoleto Study Abroad 2015 arts & humanities immersion program in the historic town of Spoleto, Italy, this summer. This interdisciplinary program features a dynamic curriculum in the arts and humanities. These talented Park Tudor students were part of a select group of students chosen to participate.

Park Tudor is an active member of the consortium of schools across the country that support the Spoleto Study Abroad program mission. Spoleto Study Abroad is committed to bringing an integrated style of learning to those students interested in pursuing their academic and artistic interests as they explore the rich cultural heritage of central Italy.

Park Tudor Hosts Thirteen Students from La Réunion

O

ne of the extraordinary opportunities for Park Tudor students is the chance to meet and interact with their peers from other parts of the world. In October, 13 students from La Réunion arrived to spend approximately two weeks attending classes at Park Tudor and exploring Indianapolis with their host families.

La Réunion is a French island located in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar. As part of this exchange program, which has been spearheaded by Upper School French teachers Christian Jacobs and Clarice Doucette, a group of Park Tudor students traveled to La Réunion for three weeks over the summer. While they were here, the visiting students enjoyed visits to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Lucas Oil Stadium, Children’s Museum, and a pumpkin farm and corn maze.

Lower School Hosts Visitors from Uruguay

The Lower School welcomed a group of

4th and 5th grade visitors from Uruguay for 10 days in September.

During their visit, the exchange students attended classes in the Lower School and visited Indianapolis landmarks like the Motor Speedway, Conner Prairie, Eagle Creek Park, and the Indianapolis Zoo. As part of this long-standing exchange program, a group of 4th and 5th grade students from Park Tudor will travel to Uruguay later in the year.

Twenty Students Participate in Ernst & Young Integrated Business Program

ver the summer, Park Tudor offered for the first time The Ernst & Young Integrated Business Program. Twenty highly motivated students participated in the week-long

program, taught by Ernst & Young Partner Jeffrey Aldridge, which introduced students to critical aspects of business including strategy, finance, marketing, sales and operations. Students also learned the critical skills of collaboration, data analysis and public speaking. At the end of the week, students participated in a team-format business challenge/case competition presented before a panel of local business executive leaders. Congratulations to the winning team of Jack Morris, Zach Hale, Mike McGill, Kiran Boyher and Aidan Wiesinger.

Park Tudor Co-Hosts Innovation Event with the Speak Easy

A

major theme of our PT2020 Strategic Plan is “Connecting Classroom, Campus, and Community.” An important part of that connection is developing partnerships with other organizations in the city that can help our students and other members of our community learn from local business leaders.

On Thursday, November 12, approximately 70 people attended “Homegrown: Fostering an Innovative Mindset in our Schools and City,” an event co-hosted by Park Tudor and the Speak Easy, a nonprofit dedicated to assisting entrepreneurs through providing working space and networking opportunities.

The event featured Park Tudor alumni Prahasith Veluvolu ‘13, founder of Mimir with fellow PT alums Jacob Petrucciani ‘12 and Colton Voege ‘13, and Lauren George ‘09, who is directing social media and community outreach leading up to the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, along with entrepreneurs Ryan Pfenninger, chief technology officer at 250ok; Kendrea Williams, founder of Ethos Marketing and Technology; and Jason Williams, founder of competitive intelligence firm SPYCOMPS. The program helped to kick off year two of the Park Tudor Innovators Institute, which will run from July 5 - 22, 2016. The Innovators Institute offers students entering grades 9-12 a unique opportunity to learn the skills needed to be successful in college and beyond, while becoming leaders in their fields of interest. The program starts with three days of innovation skills training followed by more than two weeks of instruction in a field of the student’s choosing, including Design Thinking, Business Creation, or Social Entrepreneurship.

Class of 2016 Includes Seven National Merit Semifinalists and Five Commended Students

Seven members of the class of 2016 are

These students have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists - selected from about 1.5 million high school juniors who took the 2014 PSAT/ NMSQT - represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Brad Lennon Honored at Homecoming

A

ssociate Athletic Director Brad Lennon was honored by the Park Tudor Boosters at halftime during the Homecoming football game with a plaque commemorating his long tenure as Athletic Director at Park Tudor.

Brad’s plaque will hang in the gym as part of the school’s Wall of Honor.

Travel Opportunity for the Park Tudor Community

A

special trip is available for 22 adults from July 4-13, 2016. The trip is open to parents, alumni, faculty, the community at large, and class of 2016 graduates.

This tour is organized by Kathryn Lerch, Upper School history teacher and director of the Legacy Initiative Project, which publishes the Words of War anthologies. There will be a special PT Journal for participants, which includes excerpts from the Legacy collection. The itinerary takes travelers from Bletchley Park (Enigma machine decoding center) to the various Imperial War Museum sites in and around London and then to Portsmouth, where a ferry takes the group across to Caen, France. Extra time will be spent in Normandy at Omaha Beach, Pointe-du-Hoc, St. Mere Eglise, Carantan, Arromanches, and Bayeaux and finishes in Paris, plus much more.

Southern Studies Students Display Final Projects

A

t the beginning of every volume of The Encyclopedia of Southern Culture there is this quotation from Absalom, Absalom! by William Faulkner: “Tell about the South.

What’s it like there. What do they do there.

Why do they live there. Why do they live at all.”

Although technically a series of questions, the sentences read as commands where the answers are somehow expected and predicted. It might be argued that this is the way we Midwesterners approach the South. We are curious, but at the same time, we already think we have some of the answers regarding the region known as the American South. This comes from a variety of sources such as history and English classes, pop culture, and mass media. But it is always characterized and underscored by a generalized, stereotypical notion of what life might be like in those states we classify as “southern.”

In this summer’s Southern Studies class, co-taught by History Department Chair Sven Dubie and English Department Chair Janey Sidey, students sought to chal-

ifty Park Tudor eighth grade students served as delegates representing eight nations at the Mount Notre Dame Middle School Model United Nations in Cincinnati, Ohio on Wednesday, October 14. Grade eight Model United Nations is a gateway to Model United Nations at Park Tudor - the first of five conferences, over five years, each with increasing levels of rigor.

The conference theme was “Unequal Services for Immigrant Children.” Students read a background overview paper on this global problem and then wrote a position paper with a partner. This paper articulated their assigned nation’s sense of the problem, as well as its proposed recommendations for solving the problem. At the

During two weeks of class session, followed by a week of travel, the students explored the American South through interdisciplinary perspectives including historical, literary, musical, visual, cultural, and foodways. Through these lenses we asked essential questions about what is implied by the adjective “Southern” with regard to these specific disciplines, and how this “southernism” ultimately manifests itself, or not, in several cities and towns in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee.

Ultimately, students were challenged to think about their own connections to a particular region and ask whether the burden of their own history, the traditions of the literature, the musical trends, the familiar foods grown and consumed, and the art produced in a region can be said to be fixed markers of cultural identity which contribute to a sense of self.

At the beginning of the school year, the students displayed their final projects in the Leffler Gallery. The projects reflect some of the ways the students came to think about the South, grappled with the idea of the South, or were inspired to “Tell about the South” through their own experiences studying about and traveling through the region. conference, many students presented initial speeches to inform students from others schools of their respective positions, then proceeded to engage in both formal and informal discussions and caucusing in order to identify which countries’ delegates shared similar proposed solutions.

Thereafter, students pooled their best proposed solutions, and gathered in smaller groups to write solution clauses that detailed how each working paper solution could be actuated. Finally, these draft resolutions were presented before the entire group of delegates at the conference and two detailed resolutions passed in a voting procedure, including one spearheaded by Park Tudor students. Additionally, a large number of Park Tudor students were acknowledged in a brief awards presentation and received certificates; these students included Madeleine Loewen, Brett Liebross, Gage Holle, Chloe Divens, Max Bundey, Erika Isaacs, Isha Ponugoti, Eli Anderson, Heather McNabb, and Hudson Reamer.

• Caroline Sogard ’17 competed at the USA Water Ski Regionals in the slalom ski event. She scored 4 at 28 off the rope and finished in 4th place. She then attended the USA Water Ski Nationals in Palm Beach Florida and finished 25th in the country.

• Maya Voelkel ’18 spent seven weeks studying in China this summer, as part of an immersion program sponsored by the State Department. She lived with a Chinese family and toured the country, in addition to improving her Chinese language skills.

• Maisie French ’19, Hannah Wang ’18 and Megan Chapelle ’18 participated in the 2015 Summer Legal Institute at the McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis. During the week-long institute, the students visited law firms and the courts, participated in a mock trial, attended workshops on college readiness and business networking, and presented oral arguments for competition.

• Dr. Matthew D. Miller has been awarded a fully funded fellowship to the Klingenstein Center for Independent School Leadership’s 2016 Heads of Schools program at Teachers College, Columbia University.

This distinguished honor, established in 1991, is granted to just 20 heads of school annually. The award provides independent and international school leaders with an opportunity for focused professional enrichment, renewal and reflection.

For two weeks in January, visiting heads from around the world will gather at the Columbia University campus for intensive study to examine educational issues and policies facing independent school educators. The Center attracts and selects educators who have demonstrated outstanding accomplishment or potential for excellence and equips them with the knowledge, skills and values necessary for informed and effective practice. Participants will focus on philosophy, research, governance and current topics in education. The 2016 cohort includes heads from across the United States in addition to participants from the Dominican Republic, Columbia, Germany, Nicaragua, Cote d’Ivoire, Lithuania, Fiji, Italy and Hong Kong.

• Elizabeth Niculescu ’17 was involved in groundbreaking new research over the summer on biomarkers and apps that can predict the risk of suicide. Conducted by researchers at the IU School of Medicine, the study was published recently in the journal Molecular Psychiatry.

• Emily Sun ’19 has been named a regional finalist in the 2015 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology, the nation’s premier research competition for high school students. Emily is one of 97 finalists chosen from 466 semi-finalists to advance in the competition and present her research at one of six regional events in November.

As a regional finalist, Emily will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the Siemens Foundation.

• On July 10, orchestra director Lorelei Farlow presented a seminar on the “Sequentially Spiraling Development String Musicians” to the faculty of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of Indianapolis. Under the auspices of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, MYO is a program aimed toward youth and family development through music. Mrs. Farlow has been a part of their community outreach since 2009. This year she will be working with MYO students at their IPS 70 site.

• Over the summer, Laura Gellin presented the session “From Isolation to Conversation: Essay-Writing Strategies for Argument and Synthesis” at the Annual AP Conference in Austin, TX. The session was designed to help teachers learn and experiment with strategies that activate students’ critical thinking and improve their abilities to plan and write more authentic, complex, college-level arguments.

• Director of College Counseling Sue Stemen was recently named to the Indiana Association for College Admission Counseling (IACAC) Executive Board and serves as the Chair of the Admission Practices Committee. The Committee reviews and monitors compliance with the Statement of Principles of Good Practice (SPGP) [ethical guidelines] which brings focus to principled conduct among colleges and universities, high school and independent counselors in the recruitment of students and their transition to postsecondary education. In July, Sue attended the Executive Board meeting held at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology that coincided with the Summer Institute for New [College] Admission Counselors. Senior Associate Director of College Counseling Shari Sutton was a panelist on two presentations at the conference, Amazing Journey and Expectations From The Guidance Office and Top Questions You Must Know About Your Institution.

• This summer, for the second year running, Upper School Fine Arts teacher Laura Kivela Schroeder ’90 was awarded first place in Painting in the Professional Fine Arts Division at the Indiana State Fair. She also entered the Indianapolis Arts Council’s “High Art” competition, and her work will be featured on billboards around town through next summer. Laura also attended the Art Education Association of Indiana’s annual retreat at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, and, thanks to a Park Tudor Professional Development grant, an AP Art History Institute at Northwestern University. She reports that she had a fantastic summer of learning, and is enjoying sharing new knowledge and techniques with her students.

Sports News: Boys Tennis Team State Runners-Up Boys Tennis The boys tennis team won the Center Grove semi-state on October 10, defeating a 24-2 Richmond team, 4-1. On Friday, October 16, the boys tennis team defeated Jasper in the quarterfinals of the IHSAA state tournament, 3-2, at Center Grove High School to advance to the semi-finals on Saturday, October 17. The Panthers then took on the Lions from Leo High School and were victorious, 3-2, earning them the opportunity to play in the championship match versus North Central on Saturday afternoon. The boys from Park Tudor continued to battle their way throughout the afternoon before eventually falling to the returning state champion, losing 2-3. Congratulations to the team on an unbelievable season and an incredible tournament run.

Varsity Football The Panthers earned a great win at Homecoming on September 25, defeating the Cougars from South Decatur, 57-37. Ahrod Lloyd broke Park Tudor’s simgle-game rushing record, rushing for 293 yards. They finished the season with a record of one and nine, and lost a hard-fought battle with Cardinal Ritter in the first round of sectionals.

Boys Soccer The No. 10 ranked boys soccer team closed out their season during sectionals on October 10. In first-round action they defeated the University High School Trailblazers, 3-2. In the sectional championship, they tied Heritage Christian, 4-4, during regular play, but eventually lost the game on penalty kicks.

Volleyball The girls volleyball team showed steady improvement throughout the season, and faced Covenant Christian in the first round of sectionals on October 22. The lady Panthers fought hard, eventually falling in three sets.

Cross Country On October 10, the boys cross country team earned a 9th place finish at sectionals, while the girls earned a 7th place finish. Congratulations to Jenna Beagle, Hana Shafique and Sarah Klapper for advancing to the IHSAA cross country regional meet.

Girls Soccer The girls soccer season came to an end after suffering a sectional loss to the No. 1 ranked Eagles from Heritage Christian. The girls played 80 minutes, battling through injuries and representing PT in a first-class fashion.

Girls Golf The girls golf team ended its season in sectional play at South Grove golf course on September 19, finishing 7th out of 11 teams. They had an impressive season and show great promise for the future. Alissa Honigford performed well in sectional play and advanced to the regional.

Crew Park Tudor rowers started off their season squaring off against 30 rowing clubs from around the region at the Head of the Cuyahoga in downtown Cleveland, Ohio on September 19. Rain and wind plagued the course all day, but our Panther rowers brought home numerous medals. The women’s first Varsity 4+, stroked by Annabella Helman and coxed by Maya Mishra,

Middle School Football The Park Tudor Middle School Football team won the Middle Indiana Crossroads Conference 8th Grade Football Team Championship after a hard-fought win over Monrovia for a 26-16 victory. 5th & 6th Grade Football The 5th/6th Washington Township Football League Packers team comprised of Allisonville Elementary, Orchard and Park Tudor School students won the coveted John Padgett Sugar Bucket, which is awarded to the team with the best record at the end of the regular season. This award is named after Coach John Padgett who dedicated his time to coaching in our community for many years and lost a battle to cancer in 2014.

Both teams won the MICC (Middle Indiana Crossroads Conference) on Oct. 8. 6th Grade Coed Soccer An amazing battle on the soccer field took place between the No. 1 seeded PT and Orchard 6th grade co-ed soccer teams for the championship win for PT. Orchard was the only team that PT hadn’t beat in the regular season (1-1 tie and a 5-3 loss). In the playoff tournament PT prevailed over International School of Indiana, 4-1, and St. Richard’s, 5-1, before moving on to beat Orchard, 2-1. This was the third championship title win in a row by a PT 6th grade soccer team, and the fifth championship win in seven years.

Having finished our master and strategic plans, we are moving forward with a clarity of purpose built on our mission and core values and with a confident sense of how we view the future of education. Students develop educational outcomes as they authentically engage, explore, contribute and create shared value with the world around them. Given our size and our deep commitment to knowing our students, we are uniquely equipped to deliver this sort of experience and to do so within the context of our traditional academic experience.

None of this would be possible without support from the more than 1,500 donors who proudly raised more than $2 million dollars in the 2014-15 academic year through the Annual Fund, Endowment Society, and other restricted gifts. These contributions enable us to fully execute on our mission of extraordinary educators and exceptional opportunities and it allows us to further develop the margin of excellence that separates us from our peers.

Chris ’88 and Brenda Miyamoto Endowment Society Member Profile

“Support the communities to which you

belong,” advised Chris Miyamoto ’88 in his remarks to the members of the Class of 2015 at their Commencement Ceremony on May 31, 2015. Chris and his wife, Brenda, have taken those words to heart at Park Tudor.

In addition to serving as an active member of his Park Tudor Class of 1988, Chris recently completed a six-year term on the school ’s board of directors. Brenda’s support via the Park Tudor Parents’ Association comes in many forms, but is focused on supporting our faculty and staff.

The couple met in the library of the IU School of Medicine, where Brenda was studying occupational therapy and Chris was earning his medical degree. He went on to complete his Residency at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and earned a Pediatric Otolaryngology Fellowship at Children’s Hospital Boston/Harvard Medical School. He is currently a Pediatric Otolaryngologist at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

program they were looking for. What has meant most to Brenda, however, is seeing Alexandra (grade 9) and Raiden (grade 6) flourish outside the classroom as well.

“The teachers are dedicated to the development of the whole child. Academics of course are central, but athletics, the arts, and developing strong ethics and character is equally important.”

When Chris was completing his term on the Board of Directors, he felt that becoming a member of the Endowment Society would best demonstrate his family’s support of the school. Chris and Brenda designated Park Tudor as a beneficiary of Chris’ TIAA-CREF 457 B Plan.

Chris further explains, “Park Tudor provided me with an excellent education and vigorous extracurricular experiences (athletics and music). Today, the superb faculty and staff are providing the same experience for our kids.”

Connecting Classroom, Campus, and Community: Students Devote Summers to Community-Engaged Learning

Connecting classroom, campus, and community is an impor-

tant theme that has emerged from the PT2020 Strategic Plan. One way of achieving this connection is through Community-Engaged Learning (CEL), which encompasses service learning, community service, and community-based learning experiences. Ideally, community-engaged learning creates “shared value;” the community derives a value from the service that is provided, and the student derives value from the lessons learned.

Two Park Tudor students spent their summers focused on community-engaged learning, and serve as prime examples.

Putting Computer Science Principles into Practice

What started as a tour of Johns Hopkins University turned into an opportunity to apply his computer science knowledge to a realworld application for senior Anish Thyagarajan.

Anish spent four weeks last summer working at Johns Hopkins to enhance the functionality of CAMC (camera-augmented mobile C-arm) an essential tool in trauma and orthopedic surgery. to assist doctors in removing shrapnel. The CAMC fuses an x-ray and regular photographic image together, so that doctors can view the operating site more clearly. Anish developed an algorithm that locates the tip of the CAMC tool, increasing the accuracy and efficiency of shrapnel removal.

Anish had the opportunity to intern at Johns Hopkins thanks to a tour of the Computer Science lab on a college visit. His tour

guide was an assistant researcher in the Computer Science Department, and after a discussion of Anish’s interests and experience during the tour, the researcher invited Anish to come back and work during the summer.

Working with computer science teacher Ryan Ritz helped to prepare Anish for his internship. “Taking computer science and data structures classes gave me the basis to code, and also helped

me develop my project management skills,” said Anish. “It was a struggle at first to realize that when you create your own projects from scratch, you must think of every tiny step along the way. Mr. Ritz helped me understand that.”

Anish hopes to continue his studies by majoring in computer science in college.

Taking a Risk to Help Earthquake Victims

Sophomore Carter Miller’s summer was filled with adventure, all with the goal of helping earthquake victims in Nepal.

Carter has long been interested in Nepal; his father trekked to Everest basecamp in 2010 and hiked the Annapurna circuit in Nepal in 2012, and Carter would like to complete his own basecamp trek in 2017. In addition, the Miller family has been providing financial assistance for three Nepalese students to continue their education through the organization ANSWER Nepal (AmericanNepali Students’ and Women’s Educational Relief). As part of the program, Carter and his family keep in touch with the students by writing letters back and forth several times a year. All three students survived the quake, but two of them live in villages that suffered extensive damage, including to the students’ homes.

This interest and connection to the country propelled Carter and his father to take the extraordinary step of traveling to Nepal to personally deliver much-needed supplies to the Nepalese.

“Unfortunately, the government in Nepal has stopped distributing aid and items to the people,” said Carter. “As a result, piles and piles of basic items that the Nepalese need are just sitting on tarmacs at the airports, going to waste.”

Carter and his father joined with another travel companion to bring a load of supplies – disguised as personal luggage under the guise of a trekking expedition – to three locations in Nepal: Kathmandu, Lukla, and Namche. “We flew in a helicopter to Lukla airport, which is known as the most dangerous airport in the world since it is such a mountainous region,” said Carter. “The people there were so happy to see us. You couldn’t tell that they had been through a huge disaster.”

“Anish and Carter are great examples of students who have taken tremendous initiative to connect with the broader community, in very different ways,” said Dr. Matthew D. Miller, Head of School. “Our hope is that as we expand community-engaged learning opportunities throughout the school, it will spark more students to pursue these types of passions, either through Park Tudor or on their own.”

Innovative Alums Part II: More PT Grads Making a Mark in Technology

PT grads are taking the technology world by storm. In the sum-

mer issue of the Phoenix, we profiled three alums at various stages of their careers. In this issue, we introduce you to four more.

Fletcher Heisler ’06 VP of Engineering, TrackMaven Washington, DC

Want to know all about the digital marketing activities of your company’s competitors? Fletcher Heisler can help you.

He’s vice president of engineering of TrackMaven, a startup that helps digital marketers identify opportunities and instantly track their progress against competitors. For gathering data about its own users, TrackMaven uses Heap Analytics, a company cofounded by fellow PT alum Ravi Parikh ’07.

Heisler manages a team of a dozen software engineers and also recruits new talent to the company. Before joining TrackMaven, he founded Real Python, a series of online courses to teach practical programming and web development skills. He says, “Companies are struggling to fill all of their tech positions with qualified talent—and they aren’t all necessarily looking for computer science graduates. The number of coding ‘bootcamps’ and online courses growing exponentially should be a clear sign to schools that their students want and need to develop these talents.”

At Princeton University, where he majored in operations research and financial engineering, Heisler wrote a program for his senior thesis that identified trading strategies based on the words used in press releases. “I wrote this in C and Python, mainly because I wanted an opportunity to teach myself Python, which I’ve continued to use every day,” he says.

He then wrote a course on Python, because he had a number of friends and coworkers who wanted to learn it. He created a Kickstarter project “to see if there was any interest outside of my small circle. It turned out there was; I got over 2,000 backers in three weeks without doing any marketing. Without really planning to do so, I had started a business and an online community.”

His first job was with Bates White, a Washington economic consulting firm. In his spare time, he learned web development as a hobby. He met the founder of his current employer, TrackMaven, after presenting a project at a weekend hackathon competition.

“My team didn’t win anything, but I did discover an interesting new line of work,” he notes.

Heisler began programming in fourth grade, but credits the computer science classes and competitions at Park Tudor as “some of the best training I’ve had; those experiences really reinforced my interest in programming.” He also notes that his Park Tudor art history class “has come in handy more times than I could count, especially living here in DC surrounded by so much amazing art.”

Matt Lanter ’07 Software Engineer, Facebook San Francisco Following his graduation from Washington University in St. Louis with a double major in computer science and entrepreneurship, Lanter moved to San Francisco, where he took a job with Apple, working on the Calendar and Reminders software.

“I loved seeing how Apple worked on the inside after being enamored with their products for years,” he says. “Hearing people talk about meeting with Steve Jobs and learning about upcoming features was surreal. One of my favorite parts was giving a presentation during the annual developer conference to several hundred people, something I would have been terrified to think about when I took my speech class at Park Tudor!”

Lanter moved to Facebook two years ago as a software engineer. He works on Pages, the online presence for businesses to post stories and connect with their customers. “Currently, I’m focused on ensuring that we provide a great experience for people in emerging markets while trying to understand how different cultures use Facebook,” he says.

He’s been interested in technology since he was a child. “My parents like telling the story of how whenever we would get something new, I’d read through the owner’s manual to understand all the features and then teach my parents. I was always tinkering with

things, taking apart my mom’s camera to try to fix it or disassembling other electronics in the house to learn how they worked. If I was lucky, I didn’t lose any screws and managed to put it back together.”

His love for computer programming was ignited in middle school, when he took an after-school computer science class. By the time he graduated, he had taken all of the computer science classes Park Tudor offered, as well as a few independent study classes.

At Park Tudor he helped to create PT March Madness, an online bracket system for the March Madness tournament targeted towards the PT community. Together with students Michael Harris, Ravi Parikh, Greg Webber, Josh Kimpel and Alex Scherer, he developed the concept for Shmirt, an online shirt design and ordering website. A summer internship at ChaCha while in college helped him understand the practical applications of programming.

As for the future of technology, Lanter predicts, “Self-driving cars will revolutionize the world. I think they will save lives, free people to work or relax during their commute, and completely change the model of car ownership. The sharing economy is also fascinating and there may be more of that. Sharing resources brings the world together, creates communities and is more efficient.”

Nolan Smith ’11 Vanderbilt University Nolan Smith got the “bug” for computing at Park Tudor, where he studied “amazing shapes” with computer science teacher Ryan Ritz and was the member of a team that created a website for an Indianapolis non-profit organization. He graduated this May from Vanderbilt University, where he majored in computer science and minored in art history. In September he starts a job at Microsoft, where he’ll work with data analytics in the company’s operating systems group.

At Vanderbilt, Smith collaborated with educational researchers at the university’s Peabody College to design a new app that helps them determine which types of touch-screen interactions are best for children’s learning. He was introduced to psychology professor Georgene Troseth and Ph.D. candidate Colleen Russo, who were looking for new ways to use digital media in the lab.

“We talked about a ton of different things they were doing and would like to do, and outlined the main problem they were trying to solve,” he said. He became intrigued with the thought process involved in educational developmental research and worked with them to create an educational app for children that automatically collects research data. The researchers had been manually counting each time a child tapped an iPad screen. “These are such easy problems for computers to solve,” says Smith, who noted that the app development required him “to think as if I was one of these toddlers.”

He also had to learn psychological terms, discovering that the meaning of a word in the psychology world could be very different than the meaning in the computer world. For example, the definition of the word “random.” He says, “I remember a very specific kind of disconnect. Computer science and psychology both

maintain a unique, commonly accepted implementation of ‘randomness,’ so when I brought them a version of the app that, in my eyes, had ‘randomness’ built in—particularly with the placement of images—everyone had a big laugh.”

He continues, “I could understand what Colleen meant by ‘make the pictures appear at random,’ but that did very little unless I could understand her intent. So I gained a lot of perspective on the way computers interface with professions outside of scientific or industrial applications, and I think that is something that will become more and more important.”

Asked if his years as a student at Park Tudor had an influence on his career choice, Smith replies, “To me, that is like asking if the sun had an influence on a tree in my backyard. My time at Park Tudor first helped me develop into a person capable of expression, and the choice of profession grew out of that. It would be undervaluing the years I spent at Park Tudor to say it had an influence of my choice of profession.”

Erin Hoffman ’11 Ph.D. Student University of Washington

Erin Hoffman ’11 wants to design technology applications that will improve people’s lives—and she’s well on her way to accomplishing that goal. Hoffman is pursuing a Ph.D. in human-centered design and engineering (HCDE) at the University of Washington.

HCDE is “about creating technology that people want or need, rather than creating technology because we can,” says Hoffman.

In May she graduated from Michigan State University, where she participated in the Professorial Assistantship program. The program offers paid research opportunities to the top one percent of undergraduate applicants. As a result of her computer-science experience at Park Tudor, she was selected as one of seven undergraduate and graduate students to work with a professor to develop accessible and assistive technology for MSU students with disabilities. The team created an Android application for blind students that helps them to navigate the MSU campus.

Hoffman has established a close friendship with one of the blind students she interviewed while developing the app. “I have been fascinated to see how she uses technology to gain independence and overcome the 70 percent unemployment rate among the blind,” she says. “Spending time with her has left me with an enduring interest in assistive and accessible technology,” as well as a belief that “new technology will revolutionize the experiences and capabilities of persons with disabilities.”

Hoffman also thinks technology soon will offer extensive opportunities for people “to create do-it-yourself solutions to problems in our lives.” For example, while taking part in an innovation competition at Stanford University, Hoffman and her teammate used sensors and a web server to create a program that turns off the lights and pauses the TV when a person accidentally falls asleep.

“Right now, this is the kind of thing you can only accomplish with technological expertise,” she says, “but I foresee a future where sensors and actuators are easy to connect and set up, so the average person could create their own setup just like ours.”

As a woman, Hoffman is a rarity in the field of computer tech-

nology. She was the sole female student in her Data Structures class at Park Tudor and the only woman on her teams during summer internships at Crowe Horwath and at Facebook. When she attended MSU, only about ten percent of fellow computer-science majors were women.

She believes there are both positive and negative aspects to being a woman in the computing field. “The most insidious is stereotype threat,” she says. “Because women are stereotypically less skilled than men in computer science (and most other STEM fields), there is constant pressure to perform above and beyond, just to prove that you are competent . . . . You feel that you are representing all women with your performance, and that any failure on your part will only confirm the stereotype.”

She notes, “There is no way that I would have been as prepared or as confident in my choices without a PT education. By taking AP Computer Science, Data Structures and Dynamic Web Development with Mr. Ritz, I was miles ahead of my peers in computer science, which essentially eliminated stereotype threat.”

Hoffman is quick to point out that there are a number of initiatives underway to counter the negatives and to increase the number of women working in the computer-science field. She credits the national Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing conference and career fair, which she attended every year while in college, with providing her the opportunity to interview for and land an internship at Facebook. “In that way, I had an advantage over male students, partially balancing out the day-to-day issues,” she says.

Hoffman already is doing her part to create opportunities for those who follow in her footsteps. At MSU, she taught computing classes and created the curriculum for a summer computing camp for middle-school girls. “Students absolutely love stretching their brains on topics like this,” she says, “and would definitely benefit from having more of this type of material included in their regular school curriculum.”

Board of Directors welcomes five new members: Julianne Sicklesteel Brainard ’07 graduated Phi Beta Kappa from The College of William and Mary and is a recent graduate of the Indiana University Maurer School of Law. She is an attorney for Faegre Baker and Daniels and is a member of the firm’s health care and FDA practice group which counsels nonprofit and for-profit clients in the industry. Julianne married classmate Will Brainard on August 15, 2015.

Katie McKown Feldman ’03 is an attorney with West Monroe Partners. She graduated from Indiana University and the DePaul College of Law, where she made Dean’s List five out of six semesters. She and her husband Alex (also a member of the class of 2003) are new parents to nine-month-old Victoria “Tori.” Katie finds time to give back to her community by supporting LifeSpan, St. Vincent DePaul Center, Wheeler Mission, and the Association of Corporate Counsel’s pro bono work. In her free time, Katie enjoys reading, cooking, participating in outdoor activities, and spending time with her family.

Katelyn Miner Fisher ’04 is an attorney for Faegre Baker Daniels. She graduated from Indiana University with honors and

went on to graduate from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law. While in college, Katelyn interned in Washington, D.C., with Democratic Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana. Prior to attending law school, she was a volunteer English teacher for Christel House in Mexico City. She is a member of the Junior League and enjoys cooking, reading and travel. Katelyn is married to Art Fisher.

Mallory Reider Inselberg ’98 is an attorney with Eichhorn & Eichhorn. She graduated from Tufts University and the Indiana University McKinney School of Law. Mallory received the Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year for 2012, awarded by the Defense Trial Counsel of Indiana. She was also named a Rising Star by Indiana Super Lawyers in 2010. She and her husband Rob have two children – Eli, 4 years old, and Oliver, eight months old. In her free time, Mallory enjoys gardening.

Andy Marra ’06 received a B.A. in Economics and Management from DePauw University and his law degree from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law. He is an attorney for Lewis and Wilkins where he concentrates his practice in Real Estate Law, Business Law, and Civil Litigation. He is also a Registered Civil Mediator. Andy enjoys skiing, sporting clays and wake surfing.

He is married to Molly Bodner Marra.

Each year, two students are selected from the senior class to serve as senior class representatives. They spend their senior year as ad-hoc members of the Alumni Board of Directors, and make presentations at each board meeting. After

graduation, they will serve as their class representatives. Our 2016 representatives are: Clare Chandler ’16 has participated in several leadership roles while serving on student council; most notably as the committee chair of both the philanthropy and spirit committees. She also served as her Junior Class Vice-President. She has received the Laura McAree Scholarship, a Scholastic Art and Writing Award for Painting and is an alumnus of the Spoleto Study Abroad program. Outside the classroom she participates in Technical Theatre, runs cross country and track, and is a member of both the varsity swim and soccer teams. Clare volunteers on campus with the Environmental Club and in the community with Best Buddies and the Special Olympics.

Bobby Crossin ’16 is the son of Park Tudor alumna Heather Hanley Crossin ’84. This Global Scholar is a member of the Cum Laude Society, studied Arabic via the Global OnlineAcademy and traveled through Italy with the Hillsdale College Summer Study Abroad program. Bobby received the A. Malcom McVie Service Award, Honorable Mention for Excellence in writing poetry from the Hoosier Writing Project at IUPUI, multiple Model United Nations Awards, and is a Member with Honor in the National Forensic League.

He is also an Honor Thespian and received his Master Technician designation by his Junior Year (minimum requirement of 350 theatre work hours). He is a Founder and Chairman of the Board of Kriya, Inc, a 501 (c) (3) that strives to effect medical change in developing countries.

Susan Batchelder Plimpton ’61 Named Distinguished Alumna

The Park Tudor Alumni Association and

Park Tudor School are pleased to announce that Susan Batchelder Plimpton ’61 is our 2016 Distinguished Alumna.

Plimpton served as a trustee of World Learning from 1998 to 2007 and as chair of the board from 2004 until the end of her term on the board. She was named chair emerita in February 2011 and elected cochair of the Advancement Committee in October 2012. Her affiliation with World Learning began in 1963, when she went to Sweden with The Experiment in International Living. She subsequently went to Tanzania with the School for International Training in 1967 and led an Experiment group to Italy in 1968. Both her sons have World Learning affiliations as well: one traveled to Nicaragua with SIT Study Abroad in 2001; the other was an Experimenter to Japan that same year.

Plimpton served as a marketing executive with General Mills, Pillsbury, and American Express Financial, before retir-

ing in 2000. She currently serves on the boards of the University of Minnesota Medical Foundation, the Minnesota International Center, Freedom from Hunger, and Friends of Ngong Road.

Plimpton received a BA from Wellesley College, an MBA from Harvard Business School, and an MA in international administration from the School for International Training.

• Ayun Halliday wrote and performs in Fawnbook, a post-digital, pre-apocalyptic play in which a small settlement of middleaged women and teenage boys fixate on the fruits of their garden and unexpected encounters with wildlife as catastrophes lay waste to the surrounding communities.

• Bradley Herman and Merlin Kauffman started a tech company called Soothe, which has just raised $10.6 million in funding to improve its platform’s technology and hire key employees. Soothe is a service that sends massage therapists to users’ homes; it’s available in 12 cities.

He earned his BS from Emory University in Atlanta in 2009 and became a certified EMT, and he earned his master’s degree in biological science from Purdue University in 2010.

• Grafton Day married Steve Balko on June 6, 2015.

2007

• Lauren Braun launched a crowdfunding campaign for her Alma Sana project and raised $14,055. Alma Sana Inc. is a nonprofit she founded to help moms in resource-poor areas remember when to get their children’s vaccinations using a simple bracelet with symbols. About 800,000 young children die from vaccine-preventable disease around the world, and Lauren is working to help change that statistic.

• Director and writer Skye Wallin has submitted a short film to the Sundance Film Festival. “The Adventures of Sam Wolfe” stars Skye’s cousin, Ian Wallentine ’18, and is a fantasy film with an anti-bullying theme. Skye is hopeful that the short film, which was shot over the past five years, could eventually become a feature film.

• Caitlin O’Connor Stanley married Theo Early at the Fountain Point Resort in Leelanau County, Michigan, on August 22, 2015. The couple will relocate from Aspen, Colorado to Leelanau County. Mr. Early is part owner of the Fountain Point Resort, which has been owned and operated by his family for more than a century.

• Laurel Crutchfield has been playing in orchestras and productions with bands in Seattle and Los Angeles, where she has been living since last October.

• Lindsay Shake married Andrew Manson on August 1, 2015 at St. Mary Catholic Church in downtown Indianapolis. The couple met at DePauw University; Lindsay will graduate from Loyola University School of Law next May, and Andrew just

graduated from John Marshall Law School in Chicago. Maggie is a recent graduate of DePauw University. During her college tennis career at DePauw, the team made it to the NCAA tournament all four years, reaching the quarterfinals in 2015. Maggie earned this year’s top senior female student-athlete designation at DePauw, the Amy Hasbrook Award. The biochemistry major also interned in the Indiana University School of Medicine Research in the Gastroenterology Department and served as a student researcher at the Greencastle campus.

For this year’s fall play, Mary Zimmerman’s Scenes from Metamorphoses, the tech theatre students took on the amazing feat of building a pool on stage. The pool was heated to a toasty 81° and held 2200 gallons of water.
