Fredonia Allen Memorial Scholarship Celebrates 90 Years The Fredonia Allen Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1927 by the Tudor Hall Alumnae Association to honor the 25th anniversary of Tudor Hall. The 2018 Fredonia Allen Memorial Scholarship — a onetime $4,000 award — will be given to a senior girl this spring.

From the Head’s Desk Over the last month, I have had the opportunity to meet with a number of colleagues from independent schools from across the nation. In early October, I met with Heads of School from 50 large K-12 independent schools who are members of the Independent School Data Exchange (INDEX). INDEX is non-profit organization that helps schools by collecting and sharing relevant data, analysis, research and information to assist in strategic planning, policy development and decision-making. Some of our time together was spent sharing current best practices in our schools, but the majority of our attention was focused on the future.

On November 17, a small group of us - including Middle School teacher, Adrian Pumphrey, current parents and Board members - visited the Wang Innovation Center at Western Reserve Academy, a top boarding school outside of Cleveland. The Innovation Center is a 6,000 sq. ft. space dedicated to helping students design, create and produce their own inventions or passion products. And, if they have an entrepreneurial interest, they can discover how their work might result in a business opportunity. It was an inspiring visit.

When my parents graduated in the late 1930s, the range of jobs open to them was not very different from what had been available to their parents. Similarly, when my sisters and I graduated, we entered professions that were easily recognizable to our parents - social work, and tertiary and secondary education. But when I look at today’s JK and SK students, I know that I will probably not recognize the professions they will enter. And, unlike my generation, they are much more likely to be their own “boss,” crafting their own jobs by mixing several activities together, and switching endeavors multiple times in their working lives.

The human brain is pretty good at understanding change that stems from linear growth, but exponential growth is much more challenging to understand. We are all aware that technology is changing the world we live in, but the growth of computing power and computing speed is hard for us to comprehend. And, the consequences of this growth are difficult or impossible for us to predict. The Apollo Guidance Computer used in Apollo 13 and 14 in 1969 had less computing power than a modern toaster. On the surface, the multiple IBM mainframes used at the Goddard Space Center to guide the spacecraft were the size of a car and cost $3.5 million each. Yet an iPhone 6 can guide 120,000,000 Apollo capsules to the moon simultaneously.

As technology continues to surge ahead, so does the sum of human knowledge. In 1885, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote, “Knowledge begets knowledge as money bears interest.” Estimates of the growth of human knowledge produced in 2013 suggested knowledge was doubling every 12 months, heading towards doubling every 12 hours. This massive growth in data will in turn drive the creation of technologies like molecular electronics and artificial intelligence. Where these technologies will take us is far

beyond my ability to predict, but I know it will impact education and that excites and intrigues me.

The Partnership for 21st Century Skills, known as P21, is just one of the educational think tanks focused on the ways learning and teaching might adapt and change in these exciting times.

First, and most importantly for many of us, the framework they propose does not dispense with the traditional fields of study.

Mastery of content and themes of traditional disciplines are still considered essential. English, reading and language arts, world languages, arts, mathematics, economics, science, geography, history, government and civics remain key elements of curricula. Importantly though, the rapidly growing volume of human knowledge will necessitate shifting from trying to learn broad swaths of subject content to diving more deeply into selected areas of study. There is simply too much material to absorb or memorize.

P21 predicts schools will move away from summative assessments like the traditional end-of-semester test. Instead, assessments will focus on students demonstrating their mastery of material at multiple stages in the year. Teaching approaches will also need to adapt to these developments. Extensive research has shown that only 5% of knowledge presented through lectures is retained, whereas knowledge presented through practicing by doing, or teaching the material to someone else results in retention rates ranging from 65% to 90%.

Finally, our classroom spaces are going to have to change, as well.

Teaching and learning spaces will become larger and more flexible. Educators will be moving among small groups of students engaged in different activities. The notion that every member of the class is learning the same thing at the same time will become less common.

My vision for Park Tudor is that we will be known for an exceptional educational program that combines the best of a traditional curriculum with inspiring, cutting edge experiences in technology, creativity, design, invention, collaboration and a whole host of 21st century skills. It is an exciting time to be in education and to be working at Park Tudor, a school with a wonderful history and a bright and exciting future.

News of the School Eighteen Percent of the Class of 2018 Recognized in National Merit Scholarship Competition Eleven seniors - nearly 10% of the class of 2018 - have been named Semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program, and another 10 students were recognized as Commended Students. In all, 18% of the senior class received recognition from National Merit for their high scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). First Annual Trivia Night a Smashing Success The first annual Park Tudor Trivia Night was held on Saturday, October 14, and a sold-out crowd of alumni, parents, and faculty enjoyed food, fun and friendly competition to benefit Park Tudor Athletics. Congratulations to the winning team, Titanic Swim Team! The event was hosted by the PT Booster Club. Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped us make the night such a success.

The 11 Semifinalists will continue on in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors and includes the highest scoring entrants in each state.

Although the Commended Students will not continue to compete for National Merit Scholarship awards, they placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2018 competition by taking the 2016 PSAT/NMSQT.

PT Welcomes Visitors from Uruguay

National Merit Scholarship Finalists will be announced in February, and Scholarship winners will be announced beginning in April.

NEWS OF THE SCHOOL October 13, taking classes at Park Tudor and enjoying field trips to explore Indianapolis. This exchange is a 21-year tradition at Park Tudor; it is one of the extraordinary opportunities that our students enjoy as they make connections with peers from around the world.

Students Connect Across Divisions for Homecoming

On the Wednesday before Homecoming, students from the Middle and Upper Schools teamed up with Hilbert Center and Lower School students to paint t-shirts, create banners and decorate wagons for the pre-game Homecoming parade held on Friday, October 6.

Spanish were evident in her dossier. Maya identified her teacher Leslie Phillips as the most inspiring teacher to ignite her passion for Spanish during high school. * Senior Claire Azar won a Claire Mawdsley Scholarship Award at the prestigious Pennsylvania National Horse Show in Harrisburg, PA (Reserve Champion, Small Juniors). This award recognizes competitors in the Junior Hunter Divisions who attend a traditional “brick & mortar” high school on a full-time basis and are able to maintain academic performance while competing at a high level in equestrian sports. * Jenna Beagle, Jasper MacLean, and Jack Carter attended Climate Leadership Summit 2 with Upper School biology teacher Kathy Madren. At the summit, mayors from around the state gathered with representatives from environmental groups, business leaders, educators and students to share information about environmental challenges and success stories in Indiana centered around Climate Change. Mayors, legislators, area businesses and youth told stories of civic leadership, and various groups shared environmental initiatives. Attendees also learned about resources available through environmental agencies, Purdue and Indiana Universities.

One theme heard throughout the day was “resiliency” of the community, whether discussing Environmental Justice in urban settings from pollution and waste, disaster relief from recent tornadoes during unusual times of the year, or looking at alternative energy sources and “green jobs” that would not only reduce a carbon footprint, but also harbor great savings to the taxpayer.

A special highlight of the day was reconnecting with Park Tudor alum, Stephanie Goodrid Lawson ‘00 of the McKinney Foundation, one of the co-sponsors of the day’s events.

Students in the News * Senior Michelle Shen was named a Semifinalist in the Siemens Competition; she was one of only three students in the state to receive this recognition. Michelle submitted a paper based on research in math that she did at the Research Science Institute, a six-week summer program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Siemens Competition honors the best and brightest students for their accomplishments in math and science - students who are changing the world for the better. * Senior Maya Voelkel has been selected as one of the recipients of the 2017 Indiana Outstanding High School Student of Spanish Award. Her outstanding academic record, exceptional interest for the Iberoamerican culture, exemplary community service, remarkable overseas experience and astonishing passion for

* Senior Maya Mishra was recently recognized at a reception hosted by the Phi Beta Kappa Society’s Alpha Association of Indiana as one of 25 regional winners of its annual book award for outstanding academic achievement through their junior year in high school. At the gathering, students received a certificate of commendation in addition to the book award that was presented in the spring. Phi Beta Kappa, founded in 1776 at the College of William and Mary, is the collegiate national academic honor society and is considered one of the prestigious organizations of its type in the United States.

Faculty in the News * Upper School English teacher Pam Fischer has been elected to serve as president of the Indiana University School of Education Alumni Board for a two-year term. As president, Ms. Fischer will lead the board at a critical time as the IU School of Education is planned to be split into two independent schools of education on the IU Bloomington and IUPUI campuses.

Pam had a busy October serving in this role. On October 7, she was honorary team captain of Indiana University’s football team for Teacher Appreciation Day, and met up with Ahrod Lloyd ‘17, standing on the sideline with his teammates. On October 14, she conducted her first board meeting as president, where she en-

NEWS OF THE SCHOOL couraged the board members to break out into smaller groups to create vision and mission statements for the alumni board in anticipation of the separation of the School of Ed into two distinct entities on the IU and IUPUI campuses in 2018. Finally, on October 21, Pam presided over the Distinguished Alumni Dinner where she had the honor of celebrating, among others, Dr. Edson Sample, a legend in the field of financial merit both at IU and on a national level for the last 40 years. He funded the construction of the iconic Sample Gates built in 1987. * Jamey Everett, Park Tudor’s Global Online Academy (GOA) Site Coordinator, was nominated by GOA to be a Learning Design Coach (LDC) for the inaugural year of 2017-18. As an LDC, Jamey will join a small cohort of modern learning ambassadors promoting teaching and learning design at Park Tudor and in the larger global education community. In addition, Jamey will have the opportunity to collaborate with her fellow coaches from around the globe to share, learn and grow as a community. * Sue Stemen, Director of College Counseling, Shari Sutton, Senior Associate Director of College Counseling, and Carrie Poehlein, Associate Director of College Counseling, presented at the Indiana Association of College Admissions Counseling (IACAC) Summer Institute at Manchester University. The Summer Institute is a program to train and connect new professionals in the college admissions and college counseling fields. Sue is the

Chair of the Admission Practices Committee and presented on the importance of the Statement of Principles of Good Practice (code of ethics in college admissions) in protecting the rights of students in the college admission process, and FERPA, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. Shari and Carrie, members of the IACAC Professional Development Committee, presented on numerous topics including: the “Amazing Journey” of college admissions counseling; a “Day in the Life” of college admission representatives and high school counselors; Shared Resources; College Planning Nights and College Visits; Transcript Review; and Expectations from the College Counseling Office. * Upper School English teacher Laura Gellin has been elected to serve as president of the Indiana Council of Teachers of English (ICTE) for the next two years. As a state affiliate of the national organization, ICTE offers support and professional development opportunities to literacy educators and advocates across the state. In July, Laura attended the national Affiliate Leadership Meeting in Atlanta where she networked and trained with other state presidents.

Laura was also selected as a speaker at The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Annual Convention in St. Louis, Missouri. Laura will present as a member of the panel, “FEATURED SESSION: Roundtable for Literary Magazine Advisers: Make Your Lit Mag a Hit!”

Innovation in World Language Teaching at Park Tudor B C J, W L D C

Imagine you’re at a gathering. You introduce yourself to someone. She asks you what you do for a living. You tell her you’re a language teacher. And then, more often than not, you hear “I took four years of [insert any language]; I was so bad at it, and I can’t remember anything!” As teachers of world languages, we brace ourselves for these moments of inevitable complaint. Typically when you dig deeper into the conversation, you discover that their experience wasn’t entirely negative; the person might even share a few memorized riffs in his or her language of choice.

It can be an uncomfortable moment as a teacher; you’re not sure whether to console, apologize, or immediately launch into a lesson.

In the World Languages Department, we are on a mission to save Park Tudor students from such awkward situations. We are undergoing an initiative to focus on Teaching with Comprehensible Input (TCI) from K-12 in all languages. TCI is a series of natural and intuitive methodologies to enhance true language acquisition. To put it very simply, think about how you learned your native language: you listened to key people in your life and spent innumerous hours with books and stories (input) before you began to babble and then acquire spoken and written proficiency (output) at a much later time. Essentially, this is how everyone learns to talk and communicate. And just as children learn at different rates, students demonstrate various rates of language acquisition among different learners. The TCI method allows for that kind of differentiation.

In preparation for implementing TCI, the world languages faculty members have attended conferences and workshops, invited three consultants to work with our team, and are meeting weekly to discuss our craft and classroom strategies within TCI. We know that full implementation will take time, and is a work in progress. Therefore, we are incorporating and combining TCI strategies with traditional teaching methods as we make this transition. It is worth the effort, because we want all of our students to be successful language learners and to be able to communicate in their languages of study.

There are several convincing theories that moved us to adopt this form of teaching. It certainly isn’t a new idea, but it has taken a while to gain traction as a proven and successful approach to language teaching and learning. Led in principle by Dr. Stephen Krashen, research in second language acquisition has unveiled some major discoveries over the past 50 years. For example, there is strong evidence demonstrating that extensive drills of grammar rules and memorizing long lists of vocabulary do not necessarily make it possible for students to actually communicate in that language. In other words, we might end up knowing how to say, “she waved her handkerchief” in the future perfect tense, but we probably wouldn’t ever say it in a real life situation.

Because we wouldn’t say it, we will eventually forget it and our four years of language study will be forsaken. According to Dr. Krashen, language students require consistent doses of “comprehensible input,” or spoken or written language that they can completely understand, in meaningful interactions in the target language in order to build genuine acquisition. This input requires repetition.

PT Doubles Team Wins State Championship BOYS TENNIS The Park Tudor boys tennis team had another great year with a strong finish, ending in the semifinals of the State Finals Tournament, where they lost 1-4 to the eventual state champion, Carmel High School. Will Emhardt and Drew Wiegel played the match of the year beating Carmel’s #1 doubles team - that was previously undefeated - and went on a week later to win the Individual Doubles State Championship hosted at PT with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Floyd Central. They made history in the championship match by not losing a single game in the finals!

The other team highlights of the season included winning the ICC Conference Championship, finishing 2nd at the Marion County Tournament, and ending up #3 in the final state rankings.

The team also concluded with an impressive resume of individual awards: #1 doubles team of Wiegel/Emhardt finished 1st Team All-State, while #1 singles Aidan Harris earned 1st Team-All State for the second year in a row, and the #2 doubles team of Eli Anderson and Brett Liebross earned All-State Honorable Mention. The team did well academically with seniors Alex Kim, Wiegel, and Emhardt being selected to the 1st Team Academic All-State. The team also earned All-State Academic Team honors. Coach Gill welcomed Andrea Calvert-Sanders as an Assistant Head Coach and Coach Grubb stayed on as JV coach. All the coaches were proud of the team unity throughout the season and look forward to building on their success for next year.

BOYS SOCCER The boys soccer team had another strong season, finishing as one of the top teams in the Indiana Crossroads Conference and advancing to the IHSAA sectional championship. The team was led by a strong

Will Emhardt and Drew Wiegel group of seniors throughout the entire season, but also had multiple contributions made by many underclassmen.

The team was very competitive throughout their entire 2017 campaign and showed quite a bit of heart, grit and resiliency on the field. The team had a strong start to the season, winning their first four contests along with earning recognition in the state rankings. They posted impressive wins versus some of the larger schools in the area, including Warren Central High School and Roncalli High School. The team posted a 4-2 record in conference play, only losing to Cardinal Ritter and Scecina Memorial. They had a strong finish to the year as they defeated ISI in sectional play, which advanced them to the sectional championship. Unfortunately, they fell short in the championship game as they took on the Trailblazers from University, losing 3-1. However, the boys are proud of an overall record of 10-7 this season.

The coaches will definitely miss the seniors that are moving on and graduating. In difficult times they carried the team and always exhibited a never-quit attitude. There is a strong group of underclassmen that will be returning next year, so the Panthers look to build on this season and hopefully make a post-season run.

GIRLS SOCCER The Park Tudor girls soccer team went 7-7 overall for the season, and 7-0 in the Indiana Crossroads Conference, winning the Conference title. The team ended their season in the first round of Sectionals against Triton Central High School.

The girls played a tight game during the season against Triton, going scoreless in the game and winning in penalty kicks.

But, they were unable to come up with a win against Triton at the end of the season. Park Tudor will be losing a total of six senior contributors: Shelby Hart, Alex Klimek, Sara Aldridge, Kamryn Sarratt, Riley Spitzenberger, and Olivia Rogers.

Seniors Shelby Hart and Alex Klimek spent four years with the program.

Team captain and Senior Alex Klimek was the leading scorer and points leader for the season with 7 goals and 3 assists for a total of 17 points. Junior Shea Aquilano attended every practice and started every game during the season. Players who also started every game include senior Shelby Hart, senior Sara Aldridge, junior Sarah Enkema, junior Rebecca Bamforth, and sophomore Alicia Aaholm. Freshman Zawadi Kigamwa also played in every game this season. Senior team captains Shelby Hart and Alex Klimek, junior Sarah Enkema and sophomore Alicia Aaholm were named to the All-Conference team. Juniors Shea Aquilano, Alexandra Miyamoto and Julia Waddles earned ISCA and ICC All-Academic honors.

FOOTBALL The Park Tudor Panthers football team exceeded expectations this year by matching last season’s four-win total and also playing in the sectional championship against Western Boone. This was the first time since the 2005 team, led by our own Mr. Spencer Summerville, made it that far in the tournament. The Panthers were competitive all season, often outnumbered and outsized by the powerful stateranked teams of the Indiana Crossroads Conference, but our Panthers never gave up and fought to the very end in every contest. The highlights of the season were the dominating victories against Southern Wells and South Decatur on our home field, and our sectional play with victories over Washington and Cloverdale. The season ended with a loss to Western Boone in the sectional championship. One player, sophomore Anthony Safford Jr., was selected for the ICC All-Conference team.

With several key players returning for next year, as well as the addition of new players, the Panthers are anxiously anticipating the start of next season.

GIRLS GOLF The girls golf team once again had a great season, with our top 5 players returning.

The team once again won the Indiana Crossroads Conference Championship with Alissa Honigford and Hannah Markey taking 1st and 2nd respectively. The team continued to win many individual matches and started to play their best golf of the season when it mattered most. Coming into Sectionals the team was focused and ready to end the 29-year drought of a Park Tudor girls team advancing out of Sectionals. The girls played their hearts out, but came up short in advancing as a

team. Even though the team did not advance, Alissa Honigford was able to move on to regionals as an individual for the third straight year. With the entire team supporting her, Alissa played an amazing match at regionals, shooting a 5-over-par round, earning her second place overall for individuals and qualifying her to compete for her first State Championship.

The State Tournament was held close to home, at Prairie View golf club. It was a 2-day event that tested the skills of all 100 golfers. Alissa was able to handle the immense pressure of the situation and after the two days finished tied for 49th. Coach McDowell could not have been prouder of these girls and how they played and represented Park Tudor during the season. With continued training and practice during the offseason, he knows that they will have an even better season next year.

CROSS COUNTRY The 2017 campaign marked one of the most successful in recent history for the Park Tudor boys cross country team. Led by a core group of veteran runners and some surprise performances from freshmen and sophomores, the boys finished 3rd at the Indiana Crossroads Conference meet and 7th at the Sectional meet. Both results were their best performances in nearly a decade. Sophomore Jaden Seymour and freshman Jack Button qualified for the Regional meet, marking the first time two boys had advanced to the Regional since 2013, and only the second time since 1986. The boys look to build on their 2017 successes next fall, returning six of their top ten runners, including their top four overall.

Led by seniors Jenna Beagle and Hana Shafique, two of the most accomplished runners in Park Tudor history, the girls cross country team had another successful season in 2017. The girls finished 2nd at the Indiana Crossroads Conference meet and a program-best 8th at the Marion County Championship meet, behind seven of the top teams in the state. Beagle and Shafique advanced to the Regional meet for the third straight year. Returning a team of talented underclassmen next fall, the girls are poised to build on the successes of 2017.

VOLLEYBALL The volleyball team showed much improvement during the 2017 season, with all but one player back from last year’s team.

The season started off with a bang with a victory over University High School, 253, 25-9, 25-6. Kate Maradol started off the season with a 15-point serving run, Lily Sumner had 16 kills, and Lily Gray had 7 to lead the offense. With this momentum, PT continued the season with victories over Triton Central, Union County, Heritage Christian, Speedway, Connersville, and Columbus North. The Panther record in August was a robust 7-2. This record earned Park Tudor a #9 ranking in class 2A from MaxPreps and ZRatings. Lily Sumner was Indy Star player of the week for her wonderful start to the season.

After defeating Guerin Catholic in a 3-2 thriller, PT then dropped a 2-3 decision to conference champion Scecina and endured an 0-3 defeat at the hands of #1-ranked Covenant Christian. Victories over Broad Ripple, Beech Grove, Indiana Deaf School, and Warren Central vaulted PT’s record to 12-4. With losses to Pendleton Heights (0-3), Ritter (1-3), North Central (0-3), and #5-ranked Western Boone (1-3) the Panthers were looking to shift the momentum at the beginning of October, and closed out the regular season defeating #13 Lapel at home (3-1) and Monrovia (3-0) on Senior Night. Seniors Jennifer Oberthur, Sally Root, Kate Maradol, and Steph Vlahos finished their four-year career on a winning note. In the Sectionals, Park Tudor was defeated by eventual champion Heritage Christian to finish off their season at 14-9.

I encourage you to read through this Annual Report, where you will find the names of more than 1000 parents, alumni, past parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends of Park Tudor who made gifts to the school during the 2016-2017 school year. Park Tudor simply could not offer the quality and variety of programs without these contributions, and the breadth and depth of this support validate and inspire the work that faculty, students, and staff do every day.

Equally important to the health and well-being of the school were the contributions of time, expertise, and wisdom by dedicated groups of volunteers throughout the year: the Head of School search committee, which met extensively, coordinated the parent, faculty, and alumni interviews with candidates, and chose a new Head of School; the ISACS Steering Committee, who organized and motivated the school for the upcoming self-study for the school’s accreditation; the Board and Trust, whose guidance and fiduciary responsibilities were especially crucial in a year with an Interim Head of School; the Fine Arts Guild and Athletic Booster Club, whose school-wide events built spirit and goodwill throughout the year; the Parent Annual Fund volunteers, who raised awareness about the importance of philanthropy to the school and served as ambassadors for all the school’s programs; and the Parent Councils, PTPA, and Alumni Board, who spent countless hours connecting with the community and keeping them involved and engaged.

These acts of generosity, large and small, added up to a tremendously positive year in which everyone should take pride. The names on these lists, along with those who gave in many ways but did not want public recognition, have made a positive difference in the lives of students and teachers for years and decades to come.

Initiatives and Programs Supported by Philanthropy in 2016-2017 At Park Tudor, students will find an inspiring learning environment tailored to their needs. Here, small classes and experienced educators help each student reach their full potential. The Annual Fund is critical in helping us achieve this goal.

Following are some of the opportunities and initiatives supported by the 2016-2017 Annual Fund:

• Upper School Orchestra & Band students enjoyed a special performance

by American Pianist Award winner, Sean Chen.

• Fifth graders visited Legg Seeds, an Indiana seed farm, to enhance their studies of the ancient agricultural revolution in history, environmental studies in science, and their understanding of food production and sustainability.

• Upper Schoolers staged a rousing production of "Anything Goes," this year’s spring musical.

• A partnership with the Heartland Film Festival allowed Upper School students to screen Festival films.

• Model United Nations students traveled to Model UN conferences at the University of Chicago, Georgetown University, and internationally at The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN) in The Netherlands.

• The Park Tudor Visiting Artist Series closed its season with a collaborative art project bringing together alumnae Julie Ball and Janet Ball Starkey, both class of ’76, with Park Tudor art students.

• Panther Robotics “Team PigPen,” made up of 7th-grade students, competed at the VEX Robotics World Championships in Louisville, Kentucky.

• Students in grades 5-8 competed in the Indiana State You Be the Chemist Challenge, a competition that requires students to answer multiple choice questions about many different chemistry concepts.

• Upper School students brought home the State Championship in Math in the Indiana Academic Super Bowl.

• Middle School students brought down the house with their musical, "The Lion King, Jr." • Musical Performance iBlock students performed cabaret-style at the Ritz Charles in Carmel.

• Eighth graders enjoyed their annual Boat Race tradition, held at the JCC. • Upper School students performed "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" for their fall play.

• Middle School students cheered on wheelchair basketball players during Disability Awareness Week.

• Upper School vocal and instrumental students enjoyed the spectacular acoustics of the Palladium in Carmel for their spring concert.

• JK students learned about bicycle safety during JK Bike Day. • Fifth graders raced each other with the K’nex cars they built.

• Alumni author Bob Black ’82 returned to campus to discuss his books with Middle Schoolers.

• Upper School students attended the ICC Leadership Conference, hosted at Park Tudor.

David Casey ’86: Leading the Way for Diversity and Inclusion

David Casey’s path to becoming Vice President, Workforce Strategies and Chief Diversity Officer for CVS Health, hasn’t always followed a straight line. We recently sat down with David to learn more about his journey from Park Tudor to the C-suite of the seventh largest company in the nation.

How did you get into working in diversity?

I really fell into it. I was working at an ad agency that focused on employer branding, and a client of mine went to work at WellPoint (now known as Anthem). He contacted me because WellPoint was looking to create a diversity program and he thought that I might be a good fit to lead it. At that point, I didn’t really know anything about diversity beyond my own life experience; when I was in school this career and field of study didn’t exist.

So, I educated myself and studied all of the literature that I could find in this area. I went through 16 rounds of interviews – including an interview with WellPoint’s CEO, Larry Glasscock. I was very impressed that WellPoint was taking diversity so seriously that the CEO would be involved in the interview process.

I got the job, and have now been working in this field for more than 20 years.

What are the biggest challenges that you face as you work to educate people about the importance of diversity and inclusion?

Many people misunderstand the definition of diversity. I define it as any collective mixture characterized by differences, similarities, and their related tensions and complexities. Diversity management is the craft of making critical decisions in the midst of tensions and complexities. I think many people tend to confuse initiatives like affirmative action and equal employment opportunity with diversity. Diversity and inclusion is not a set of projects and initiatives; it is a skill set and a competency. Projects, initiatives and events can be a means to an end as organizations work to build those skills in employees.

I think that working in this area is more important than ever, as our world is becoming more complex than ever. There will never not be a need for managers and executives to make better decisions in the midst of these complexities – that is diversity management.

What do you find most gratifying about working in this field?

I’m very grateful that I get to do this work at the seventh largest company in the United States. We have more than 200,000 employees and conduct millions of transactions at our pharmacies every day, so the opportunity to impact so many people’s thinking is tremendously gratifying. I also love it that the impact often will bleed over from professional to personal lives. Larry Glasscock (the former CEO of WellPoint) once mentioned me by name in a speech when Anthem was being recognized with the Mayor of Indianapolis’s corporate diversity award and said that I had helped him to become a better person. That was one of my proudest moments because that is what this is all about – helping people become better.

What advice do you have for students who would like to pursue a career in diversity?

It’s very important to understand the art and science of diversity.

There are people working in this field who have taken a variety of different tracks – some have been lawyers, human resources

David Casey ’86 professionals, business unit leaders – and that’s good and bad because it can cause people to assume that anyone can do this work. Interest doesn’t necessarily equal effectiveness. There is academic rigor to diversity. You must be a student of the work to understand how to implement the ideas of diversity. Diversity goes well beyond race and gender, yet most people who haven’t studied in this area would define diversity just in those terms.

Sometimes there is a misconception that just because someone is a member of an underrepresented group, they are qualified to do diversity work. That can help, but you must do more than simply draw on your own personal experience to be effective in this field.

Specifically, I recommend reading the work of my mentor, Dr. R. Roosevelt Thomas, Jr. He founded the American Institute for Managing Diversity and has written several books that are mustreads for anyone who would like to work in this field.

How did Park Tudor prepare you for your current career?

Attending Park Tudor was one of the milestone experiences that prepared me for where I am today. I grew up in the inner city, where most people were living below the poverty line. My father had an 8th-grade education and my mother attended vocational school, but fortunately for me they really valued education and sent me to Park Tudor.

I lived in an environment where there was gang violence and drugs, so going to Park Tudor was a whole different world. It opened my eyes and taught me to engage with a variety of different types of people every day. I learned that you don’t have to change who you are to fit in, but you need to expand who you are. I was just as comfortable at school as at home.

Of course the best thing about Park Tudor was meeting my wife.

(David is married to Debbie Kramer Casey ’86; they began dating as juniors at Park Tudor).

You also sent two of your three children to Park Tudor. What was it like being a PT parent?

Most Park Tudor graduates go straight to college, but you took a different path, working for a year and then enlisting in the Marine Corps. How did that experience shape your life?

I joined the military primarily to earn money for college. I spent eight years in the Marine Corps, including six months in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait during Desert Storm. My experiences in Desert Storm were very helpful in preparing me to work in diversity, because it forced me to engage with different cultures thousands of miles away, but taught me that in many ways we are all very similar. In Kuwait, for example, I met a woman who was wearing jeans and a Cubs jersey. She had gone to college in Chicago and came home to Kuwait to care for her family. She wanted the same things in life that we all do – just to take care of her family.

These similarities are a huge part of diversity.

Who were your most influential teachers at Park Tudor?

Mr. (Michael) Baer was my most influential teacher. I actually recently wrote him a note about that on Facebook. He really talked to us as people. When I was dating Debbie, he knew there would be challenges with an interracial relationship, and we talked about that. He was a sounding board for me and gave me a level of comfort in an environment that could be a little intimidating.

Yes, I sent my two sons to Park Tudor until my family moved out of Indianapolis when I took my current job at CVS. My older son, Kendall, was in 8th grade, and my younger son, R.J., was in 5th grade when we moved. It was very fulfilling to see them benefit from Park Tudor – to be part of the PT family and community; part of a diverse group of kids. Kendall loved Park Tudor so much that he came back and lived with his sister his senior year so that he could graduate from PT. That was a hard year for us as his parents, but a great experience for him.

One last question. There is clearly a lot of work left to be done in diversity and inclusion; how do you not become discouraged?

I don’t become discouraged because even in this divisive time, I still see the foundational good in people. It really comes out when people are under stress. When we are challenged, as with the recent hurricanes in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico, we rely on our basic instincts and the best comes out. It’s unfortunate that it often takes tragedy or disaster, but we see the best in people in the worst of times.

In high school I wasn’t the most motivated student, but Mr. Baer actually made me enjoy physics – it’s hard to make physics fun!

I particularly remember building the bridge out of toothpicks in his class.

My basketball coach, Mr. (Todd) Lickliter was also a big influence. He taught me that hard work and teamwork would lead to success. Our team wasn’t necessarily made up of the best athletes, but we improved and beat some tough teams because we worked hard and played as a team.

Your Alumni Association Board of Directors hit the ground running this past summer and has already hosted a number of exciting events. Our annual Indianapolis Indians Game and picnic attracted several alumni and their family members. We hosted a successful Women’s Networking Event at a very deserving nonprofit organization, Random Acts of Flowers. Also, we held alumni gatherings in Salt Lake City and San Francisco.

We are fortunate to have incredible support from Head of School Gareth Vaughan, as he participated in our very successful Washington, D.C. alumni event and gatherings for Tudor Hall alumnae, alumni who are attending school at Indiana University and Purdue University, and our second annual combined alumni/parent family event, a pumpkin carving activity at the Lilly Orchard.

Park Tudor Alumni Association Board of Directors

Ryan Gershman ’04 earned a BA in Economics from the University of Michigan. He works as a Principal with his family’s business, Gershman Partners. Ryan and his wife, Rachel, enjoy travel, dining and Michigan football. Ryan is also involved in the Urban Land Institute and serves as Co-chair of the Young Leaders group.

Kirstin Brueckmann ’11 graduated from Indiana University with honors and earned a B.A. in Arts Management. She is a Marketing and Production Associate for the Cabaret. In her free time, she enjoys working out, reading, photography and design. Kirstin also volunteers for Camp Kesem, free summer camps for children who have been impacted by a parent’s cancer. She also sings in the Zionsville United Methodist Church choir. Kirstin enjoys graphic design (including wedding invitations and adult coloring books!), the Italian language, travel and the arts.

The Park Tudor Alumni Association Board of Directors welcomes six new members: Adam Corya ’92 is a realtor with Carpenter Realtors. He graduated from Ball State University and earned a TESL (Teach English as a Foreign Language) Certificate at the Language Link School of London. Adam is fluent in Spanish. He and his wife, Lyndsay, are parents to Anderson (6) and Elliott (4). When he’s not selling houses, Adam enjoys whatever his kids are doing and can be found coaching soccer, playing tennis, traveling, and watching IU basketball.

Jordan Paul Fisch ’95 graduated from the University of Vermont and has an M.A. in Early Childhood Education from New York University. She and her husband Mark Fisch ’95 are parents to Eli (7) and Benji (4) who attend Park Tudor. Jordan enjoys spending time with her family and travelling. She volunteers at school and serves on the Board of Women for Riley Hospital.

Sloane Ringo Vititoe ’98 graduated from Brooks Institute of Photography with a B.A. in Visual Journalism. She and her husband, Kyle, have two children, Ainsley (6) and Sutton (3) who attend Park Tudor. Sloane volunteers at school and serves as Grants CoChair and Treasurer for Women for Riley and is also a volunteer for Random Acts of Flowers. She also enjoys travel, cooking, being active and spending time with family and friends.

Leigh Ann Lauth O’Neill ’99 graduated from DePauw University and earned her Law Degree at Indiana University. She is founder and owner of Lauth O’Neill Physician Agency, a company that supports physicians thoughout their employment searches.

Leigh Ann and her husband, Kevin, are parents to Colin (7), Ryan (6), and Lauren (3) who attend Park Tudor. Leigh Ann serves on the Indiana Blind Children’s Foundation Gala Committee and is a Catechist for First Reconciliation/First Eucharist classes at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. To relax, she enjoys cooking and crafting.

Each year, two students are selected from the senior class to serve as senior class representatives. They spend their senior year as ad-hoc members of the Alumni Board of Directors, and make presentations at each board meeting. After graduation, they will serve as their class representatives. Our 2018 representatives are: Hana Shafique ’18 is a leader in her class and participates fully in the life of the school. She serves as Diversity Chair in Student Government and is a member of the Cyberpatriot Cyber Defense team, Science Olympiad, and the debate team. Hana is the team captain for both the track and cross country teams, has six varsity letters and holds the school record in the 300 meter hurdle.

This Global Scholar is also involved in LOGOS Science Research Program. She has been awarded the Joe Dezelan Honor Scholarship, the Sgt. Wesley Hare Memorial Award, the James R. Leffler Leadership Award, the Dian Hutchinson Baker Leadership Award, and the Smith College Book Award.

Jack Ranucci ’18 leads by example. He chairs the newly formed School Spirit Committee which works to bring students and their families together in support of athletics and other school activities. He is a member of the varsity track and golf teams, and serves as captain of the varsity boys cross country team. This four-year Model United Nations participant will be traveling to the Hague this winter. Jack founded the Young Democrats Club and volunteered with the Hillary Clinton Campaign.

World War II In Depth: Trip Scheduled for June 2018 Upper School social studies teacher Kathryn Lerch is organizing a trip to London, Munich, Normandy and Paris, focused on World War II In Depth. Designed specifically for Park Tudor Upper School students, parents and alumni, this trip has been tentatively scheduled for June 2-11, 2018.

This trip is particularly well suited for travelers who wish to practice their French/German language skills, or love history.

The departure city will be Indianapolis, unless participants wish to arrange independent flights to/from Europe.

For more detailed information about optional monthly evening sessions for adults/students, or other aspects of this trip, please contact Group Leader, Kathryn Lerch (klerch@parktudor.org).

This will be an exceptional tour, especially with centrally located 3-4 star hotels and some wonderful local food, and special guides.

1962 Mary Macey's book The Village of Bones is now available as an audio book, on Audible, iTunes, and Amazon.

1979 Angela Holder Ciccolo was featured in Profile magazine for her work with Special Olympics. She is the chief legal officer and secretary for the nonprofit. She talks about building her career and becoming the first female general counsel for the NAACP in 2008. She currently serves on the US Commission on Civil Rights Virginia State Advisory Committee. In the article, Angela says about working for a nonprofit, "I love that I can provide opportunities and change lives through what I do."
