FROM THE HEAD’S DESK

From the Head’s Desk Dear Park Tudor Community, As I speak with educators across the country, often they lament the increasingly transactional nature of education. Students see school, particularly high school, as a means to an end—gaining acceptance to the college of their dreams—rather than as a wide range of valuable experiences that pave the way for greater success in life. In this issue, Richard Ni ‘11 shares some wisdom that illustrates why a Park Tudor education so effectively does just that. Ni says, “I’m so grateful for all of the opportunities I had at Park Tudor. I think one of the best aspects of my Park Tudor experience was the chance to try many different things - band, track and field, different extracurriculars, philosophy classes. That helped me find some passions early; it also helped me realize what I didn’t want to pursue.” Park Tudor continues to offer a wide range of experiences both inside and outside of the classroom with this goal in mind. As we look ahead, we want to create even more opportunities for students not only to discover new passions, but also to dive more deeply into their fields of interest. This is why part of Learning with Purpose, our new strategic plan, prioritizes creating such experiences for students. The plan’s first pillar, Academics and Experiences, focuses on “innovative learning rooted in a legacy of excellence.” Our goal is to create more opportunities for students to immerse themselves in topics that they find particularly interesting by offering new electives in the Upper School, embedding more inquiry-based learning in the curriculum, and providing new moments of interdisciplinary study. Of course, we don’t want these explorations to be limited to the classroom. We will bring more cocurricular experiences designed to help students explore passions in a real-world environment. A great example of this is Studio 72, our in-house photography studio where Upper School students are able to learn about and practice sports photography and marketing. The students now plan and execute “media days” each season to take all of the team and individual sports photos, and are out on the sidelines for action shots during games and matches.

You’ll see Studio 72’s work throughout our Instagram feeds, @parktudor and @parktudor.athletics, and in the pages of this magazine. We are also striving to strengthen alumni and community connections and collaborations to provide internship opportunities and other resources for students to build meaningful relationships and explore potential career paths before they graduate from Park Tudor and long before they are required to declare a college major. In all of the things we currently do so well and in each of the priorities that will allow us to do even better, our goal is to empower our students to follow what is perhaps Ni’s most simple yet powerful piece of advice: “Find something you love to do and get really good at it, and career opportunities will follow.” Enjoy this issue of the Phoenix - we have had a fantastic fall at Park Tudor - and I invite you to explore our strategic plan to learn more.

News of the School Although they will not continue in the 2026 competition for Eleven Seniors Named National National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students among the top 50,000 students who entered the Merit Semifinalists; Eight Named placed competition by taking the 2024 PSAT/NMSQT. National Merit Commended Students from Uruguay Visit PT; Students PT Students Visit Uruguay Congratulations to the 11 members of the class of 2026 who have been recognized as Semifinalists in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program.

Leo Sniderman, Kaitlyn Park, Clara Myers, Shreya Mallela, Owen Zhang, Alexander Cheng, Justin Li, Arnay Garhyan, Hudson Messer, Connor Kacena-Merrell, and Riti Tandra Over 1.3 million juniors in about 20,000 high schools entered the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2024 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. National Merit Scholarship Finalists will be announced in February, and Scholarship winners will be announced beginning in April. In addition, eight members of the class of 2026 have been named Commended Students in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program.

As part of our longstanding exchange program with the Scuola italiana di Montevideo in Uruguay, we welcomed a group of 7th graders from September 16 - September 26. While in Indianapolis, the Uruguayan students stayed busy with a variety of field trips and learning experiences that helped them get to know our city. Over fall break in October, PT students and faculty traveled to Uruguay to reunite with their new friends. They visited Scuola italiana di Montevideo, took in museums and historic sights, ate great food and made their way to the Atlantic Ocean.

The donation was made possible through the dedication of more than twenty DECA members, who volunteered their time and talents to run a successful snack booth at the Fall Family Festival. Their hard work and commitment to giving back exemplify the spirit of leadership and service that DECA encourages in all its members.

With that in mind, students turned their creativity toward designing Park Tudor-themed mobile wallpapers that highlight Panther pride. After brainstorming, sketching, and digital design work, the class held a vote to select the most engaging designs.

“We wanted to show students how design can influence everyday experiences,” said instructor, Heather Teets. “Something as simple as a phone background can create meaningful connections.”

BSU Hosts Back-to-School Picnic Park Tudor’s DECA members had the unique opportunity to hear from Jim Beall, CEO of The Plan Consulting Group, during a recent guest speaker session. Mr. Beall shared valuable insights on problem-solving within organizations, emphasizing how creative thinking and strategic approaches to challenges can drive meaningful and successful outcomes. In addition to his engaging talk, Mr. Beall highlighted his extensive network of business leaders, opening the door to exciting mentorship opportunities for members of the Park Tudor DECA community. We are grateful for his time and expertise and look forward to future collaborations.

Upper School Students Create Park Tudor Mobile Wallpapers to Boost School Spirit Students and families from across the PT community had a great time at the BSU Back-to-School Picnic on Saturday, September 20. With games, food, and dancing, camaraderie filled the air to the backdrop of awesome music from DJ Jamo (Jameson Harney, PT class of 2027).

Students and Faculty in the News Upper School students in the Digital Content Creation class recently explored an innovative approach to digital marketing: mobile wallpapers. According to reviews.org, the average American checks their phone 205 times a day—almost once every five minutes while awake. Each time a phone is unlocked, the wallpaper is the

* Eighth-grader Jada Jones claimed the title of Jr. Teen Division Winner at the prestigious National American Miss (NAM) pageant held over Labor Day weekend at the Indianapolis Marriott Downtown. Competing in the Jr. Teen category for ages 13–15, Jada stood out as the youngest contestant at 13

years old. Jada excelled in the required competitions—personal introduction, interview, and formal wear—earning her the crown. In addition to her pageant achievements, Jada was recognized as the overall winner for her résumé entry and honored in the academic achievement category. Jada represented her state at the National American Miss Pageant in Orlando, Florida, during Thanksgiving break.

* Sophomore Eli Fisch is among the small percentage of students "short listed" in the prestigious John Locke Institute Essay Contest. He has been invited to attend the award ceremony at Oxford University. He chose to respond to the question "Edmund Burke celebrated the wisdom of 'unlettered men.' In a democracy, do the votes of the unlettered tend to protect a country against the bad ideas of the lettered or do the votes of the lettered tend to protect a country against the bad ideas of the unlettered?" The contest received more than 68,000 entries. * Orchestra Director José Valencia recently served as conductor and coach for an orchestra of young string musicians at the Linda Leubke String Festival, a two-day event held on the campus of Indiana State University. The festival brought together talented students from across the region for intensive rehearsals that culminated in a final performance featuring contemporary works for strings. Mr. Valencia also performed as violin soloist with the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir in its presentation of Considering Matthew Shepard.

Teacher/Student juried exhibition, a celebrated and significant event in the state’s arts community, shines a spotlight on the achievements of high school teachers working in clay and their talented students. Held in conjunction with the 4th Biennial Indiana Clay Conference on October 4-5, and hosted by Ball State University in partnership with Purdue University Fort Wayne, this prestigious exhibition is a testament to the vibrant creativity in Indiana schools.

Park Tudor Debate Starts Strong in First Three Tournaments of the 2025-26 Season

The Park Tudor Debate Team has had a strong start this year, winning several individual and team awards at three recent tournaments: the Ben Davis All-Novice, the West Lafayette All-World Schools, and the Butler University Dave Waite. At Ben Davis and Butler, Park Tudor teams finished 1st and 2nd in sweepstakes, while many debaters earned top placements in Lincoln-Douglas (LD), novice LD, Policy, and novice Public Forum (PF) events. Most notably at Butler, Evan Dahlie went undefeated and took first place in Lincoln-Douglas (LD) debate, arguing whether plea bargaining in the US judicial system is just. On the same topic, Max Sturman also took home an award by placing 1st in novice LD. Policy debaters Ishan Gupta & Pari Ponugoti took 2nd place debating plans for significantly increasing exploration in the Arctic, while partners Riley Dusko & Minna Steensland and Sarah Moser & Sarah Zeng took 3rd and 4th place, respectively, in novice Public Forum (PF) debate, arguing if the UK should re-join the European Union. At Ben Davis, Park Tudor novice debaters won a clean sweep in many events. In LD, Max Sturman went undefeated and took 1st place, followed by John Wall, Nakota Bride, and Selena Cole, who rounded out the top four. PF Partners Emily Huang & Sophia Xu went undefeated and took 1st place, while Riley Dusko & Minna Steensland placed 2nd, and Jacob Jalali & Yuki Jalali placed 3rd.

At the West Lafayette World Schools Tournament, teams of 3-5 debaters argued a number of topics, including whether or not the US should increase its use of nuclear power. Eighth Grade Boat Race Showcases Creativity

The annual Eighth Grade Boat Race took place on Tuesday, September 2. In preparation, 8th graders solicited sponsors, designed their boats, and came up with creative team themes. Congratulations to Washington's Wake—Leila Bilimoria, Audrey Ongwijitwat, Emma Jane Held, Hudson Aikin, and Garrick Wessler—on bringing home first place!

PT Hosts 24 Schools for College Day

The Park Tudor Department of College Counseling welcomed representatives from 24 colleges and universities to campus for College Day on Tuesday, September 9. Upper School students spent the afternoon meeting with representatives and learning about schools from coast to coast.

Campus Comes Together to Celebrate Homecoming

Fall Family Festival Brings Fun to Campus

The entire school celebrated a great Homecoming Week September 22-26. Students across campus enjoyed showing their Panther Pride, culminating in an all-school Pep Rally and Spirit Night. On Wednesday, students enjoyed getting together during Advisory to decorate their Homecoming hats. The Park Tudor Parents Association put on a fabulous Fall Family Festival on Friday, September 5. Families enjoyed food trucks, games, fine arts performances, and inflatables during this fun, community-building event. SK Makes Doughnuts for Lower School Staff and Faculty

(cello) represented Park Tudor with poise and artistry, presenting a program of classical selections that delighted attendees. The students received numerous compliments for their polished performance and professionalism.

Mrs. Behringer's Senior Kindergarten class celebrated Doughnut Day on Friday, October 3. The students mixed the dough and formed the rings, and then powdered and delivered the finished product to Lower School staff and faculty. It's always one of the sweetest days of the year!

Middle School Spanish Students Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

This outreach performance exemplifies Park Tudor’s mission to foster meaningful connections with the broader community through authentic engagement and shared experiences. Opportunities like this allow students to bring their musical learning beyond the classroom, enriching both their own education and the cultural life of Central Indiana. Looking ahead, the Park Tudor Music Department is eager to explore additional opportunities for students to perform in the community — sharing their talents and embodying the school’s commitment to collaboration, leadership, and lifelong appreciation of the arts.

Panther Robotics Teams Compete in Tournament Finals On October 18, two Panther Robotics teams competed in the first Indiana tournament of the season at Triton Central. 6842K Killer Instinct and 6842V Vicious Vortex advanced through the tournament and met each other in the finals.

PT 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Spanish students explored different aspects of Hispanic culture and identity during Hispanic Heritage Month. The students presented their projects—ranging from personalized ceramic and Spanish-speaking country displays to artwork inspired by notable Latin Americans—to fellow students, faculty, parents, and staff on Friday, October 3 in the Middle School Library during Hispanic Heritage Month Community Day.

Park Tudor Renaissance Ensemble Performs at Central Indiana CPCU Luncheon On September 30, a quartet from the Park Tudor Renaissance Ensemble performed during a luncheon of the Central Indiana CPCU at the Ritz Charles in Carmel. Seniors Justin Li (violin), Zara Hamza (violin), Tiffany Weng (viola), and Garrett Hur

6842K Killer Instinct—made up of Luke Aikin, Izzy Cohen, Arnay Garhyan, Aneesh Gupta, and Rishi Nagireddy—was one of the first three teams in Indiana to qualify for the State Championship in March, a fantastic achievement. The team went undefeated 6-0 during qualifications. In eliminations, they proudly allied with Meta Mafia, a Heritage Christian team, as the number one Alliance. That alliance powered through their first two elimination matches before meeting Vicious Vortex—made up of Mason Bohm, Praneel Daliboyina, Lorelei Davis, Jackson Harper, and Keshav Krishnan—in the final match. Killer Instinct and Meta Mafia triumphed 84-56, claiming the Tournament Champion title. In addition, Killer Instinct earned the prestigious Amaze Award, celebrating their excellence in high-scoring matches and their impressive engineering notebook and interview. Upper School Students Present Antigone Over the weekend of November 7-9, Upper School students entertained audiences with performances of the play Antigone. In this fresh and vibrant take on an ancient classic, after a case of sibling rivalry culminates in civil war, King Creon of Thebes forbids anyone from burying the traitor who started it. When his niece, Antigone, takes matters into her own hands, she sparks a family feud that pits father against son, sister against sister, and civil law against the gods.

Sports News Girls Soccer Finishes as State Runners-Up in Class 2A Girls Soccer In only their second season competing in Class 2A—often against much larger schools—the girls soccer team finished as State Runners-Up, losing 3-0 in a hard-fought game against Mishawaka Marian. The team’s final record was 15-6-3. After a challenging start to the season with ties against Fishers High School and Bishop Chatard, and losses to Brownsburg and Zionsville, the Panthers came back strong with a 7-0 win over Bethesda Christian. September kicked off with a 1-1 tie against Franklin Central, and a 1-0 loss to Cathedral. The team picked up momentum and then posted a string of big victories over Heritage Christian, Providence Christo Rey, University High School, Shortridge, and Herron High School. In the Marion County Tournament, the Panthers posted wins over Southport, Ben Davis, Lawrence North, and Brebeuf to bring home the championship. Following the tournament, they posted close losses to Center Grove (2-1) and Lawrence North (4-3) to end the regular season. The Panthers opened Sectional play with a 6-0 victory over Hamilton Heights, followed by a 2-1 victory over Bishop Chatard. The team rolled on to defeat Lebanon to win the Regional Semifinal. They took the Regional title with a 1-0 victory over Roncalli, and then faced off against

Lawrenceburg in the Semi-State game, posting a 2-0 win. In the State Championship game at the Carroll Track and Soccer Stadium at IU Indy, they came up just short. Asha Gussick, Joslin Kershaw, Sydney Shattuck, Kelsey Nehrling, and Elly Rose Ford were named All County. Asha Gussick, Joslin Kershaw, Anna Mattes, Lizzy Miller, and Sydney Shattuck earned All Conference honors. Issy Wallace received the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award. Sydney Shattuck and Joslin Kershaw were also named All District First Team, Asha Gussick earned All District Second Team, and Lizzy Miller was named Top Team Player for District Three. Congratulations to the Panthers on a fantastic season! We can’t wait for next year.

Boys Soccer Coming off a maiden season in Class 2A soccer, an experienced Park Tudor boys soccer squad had its eyes set on making a return to the state championship. After dropping the first game of the season to Guerin Catholic, the Panthers would go on a 14-game unbeaten streak, winning a PAAC Conference Championship over University High School, and making a run to the final four of the Marion County Tournament - scoring 69 goals and allowing only 9 in the process. During the season the Panthers were battle-tested—they took on three 3A opponents in the Marion County tournament. Finally, they headed back to defend their Sectional Championship, this time on Guerin Catholic’s turf. Facing similar opponents to last year, the boys routed Tri-West and Heritage Christian by three goals apiece to set up a top-5 matchup between the 2A-ranked #2 Guerin Catholic and the #3 Panthers. Park Tudor ultimately fell short to the Guerin Catholic Eagles 3-2 after an end-to-end battle. Although the season did not match the success the Panthers have had in recent years, it was a season to be proud of, as the Panthers broke records and held their own against some of the best teams in the state across all three classes, The team finished the season 15-3-2, and undefeated in conference play.

Boys Tennis The Park Tudor boys tennis team had a rebuilding year in 2025. In all, the team included 39 boys with all levels of play. The varsity team finished the season with a 9 win/6 loss record, and the JV team finished with 7 wins and 5 losses. In the North Central Invitational, the team tied for 7th place: 1. Singles - Oliver Gollapudi: 5th Place 2. Singles - Sanjay Adig: 7th Place 3. Singles - Eli Fisch: 7th Place 1. Doubles - Aden Hawkins/Benjamin Murray: 8th Place 2. Doubles - Ollie Hulka/Lucas Li: 6th Place The team finished in 2nd place in the Pioneer Athletic Association Conference (PAAC) Championship, losing to a very competitive University High School team. Paddy Flanagan, Ollie Hulka, and Shaurya Lathar were named All Conference. In the Marion County Tournament, the Panthers finished in 2nd place, the team’s best finish in years. They defeated Perry Meridian 5-0, North Central 5-0, and Warren Central 5-0 before losing to Brebeuf 5-0. The IHSAA team tournament began with Sectionals hosted at PT. The Panthers defeated International School 4-1 in the first round, before losing 5-0 to Brebeuf in the finals to end the season. To provide additional play, the JV team participated in the Brebeuf JV Doubles Event and finished in 2nd place. To conclude the JV season, the team participated in the HSE Royals JV Invitational and finished in 3rd place—the Panthers’ best finish since 2018. The Panthers were also recognized for academic achievements. The varsity team was named Academic All State for having a 3.6 GPA or higher. The following players were named PAAC Academic Achievement for a junior or senior with a 3.75 GPA or higher: Evan Dahlie, Oliver Gollapudi, Keshav Krishnan, Benjamin Murray, and Isaac Rothbaum. 2025 Team Awards: Coaches Award: Maaz Ahmad Spirit Award: Paddy Flanagan Rookie of the Year: Ollie Hulka and Lucas Li Most Improved: Sanjay Adig Mental Attitude: Oliver Gollapudi MVP: Aden Hawkins and Benjamin Murray Leadership Awards: Aden Hawkins and Isaac Rothbaum

Football The football team started off the season with a bang, going undefeated in their first four games with victories over Covenant Christian, Tindley Academy, Shortridge, and Indianapolis Washington. As injuries hit and the competition became stiffer, the team had a 4-week skid, posting losses to Shenandoah, Eastern Hancock, Wes-Del, and Sullivan before finishing the regular season on top, winning a 23-22 thriller against Purdue Polytechnic. Senior leadership has proved invaluable yet again in the form of Thomas Lillo in the trenches and Landon Guerra playing skill positions. In the regular season, Thomas had 24 tackles on the defensive line and anchored the offense, contributing to a rushing average of over 5.5 yards per carry and sacks on less than 3% of all drop-back passing attempts. Offensively, Landon led the team in receiving with 35 catches for 619 yards and 10 TDs; on defense he had 47 tackles and 2 interceptions. Following their lead, underclassmen led the team in rushing, passing and total tackles on defense so the future is bright. The team fell on Halloween night during Sectional play, ending the 2025 campaign at 5-5. This is the 6th consecutive season at .500 or above, a mark that has not been hit since coach Joe Dezelan’s 9-year run from 1973-1981 at .500 or better.

Girls Volleyball

Cross Country

The girls volleyball team finished the season at 14-12, with a third place, 4-2 record in the PAAC Conference. They kicked off their season with a 3-0 win over the International School, followed by a 3-1 loss to Sheridan.

The cross country team showed tremendous growth and extraordinary work ethic this season. Their determination led the boys and girls teams to second-place finishes at the PAAC Championships meet, where eight runners were recognized with All Conference Honors.

The Panthers won the Park Tudor Invitational tournament in August, posting victories over Irvington Prep, Providence Christo Rey, and Purdue Polytechnic. August came to a close with a loss to Cardinal Ritter, and a win over Speedway High School. The team began September with a 3-0 win over Bethesda Christian, followed by a 3-0 loss to Herron High School. They then posted a 3-0 win over Traders Point Christian and a 3-0 loss to Scecina. The Panthers picked up three wins in a row over Shortridge, Arsenal Technical, and Anderson Prep Academy, and followed that with a string of losses to University High School, Warren Central, and Bishop Chatard. In the PAAC Conference Tournament held at Park Tudor, the team defeated Liberty Christian and University High School in the first two rounds to advance to the championship. Unfortunately, the team was defeated in the championship match by Herron High School. In the Marion County Tournament, the Panthers were defeated in their first match by Southport. The team finished off the regular season with wins over Central Christian Academy and Victory College Prep, and a loss to Lawrence Central. In the Sectional, they took on Monrovia at home in the first round, losing 3-0 to bring the season to a close.

The girls team also earned a second place finish at the Flashrock Invitational Race, which awards them a berth in next year's Championship Race at the event. At the IHSAA Sectional meet, the boys team placed sixth, their highest team finish in over ten years. Owen Zhang, Sam Housten and Quinn Rogers qualified for the Regional Championships as individuals, where each set a new personal best time in the 5K race. The girls team took seventh place at the Sectional meet, and Lauren Lo, Avi Holden, Kylie Ritz, and Hasini Ambaty also advanced to Regionals as individuals. They each also ran a season's best or personal best time at that race. In all, the team set 37 new personal-best times over the course of the season. The Panthers are now looking forward to continued success in the 2026 season.

Middle School Girls Volleyball Congratulations to our 7/8 Grade Girls Red volleyball team on winning the PAAC Tournament Championship on Saturday, October 4. The Panthers had a bye into the semi-final round, where they defeated Liberty Christian in two close sets to advance to the championship game. The Panthers wrapped up the tournament by defeating International School of Indiana in a thrilling third set to secure the championship.

Girls Golf The girls golf team had a fantastic season, capped off by advancing to the Regional in the IHSAA State Tournament. The Panthers got off to a strong start in August, picking up wins against Brebeuf, North Central, Speedway, Perry Meridian, Lawrence Central, and Lawrence North. Leading up to the Marion County Tournament, they had suffered only one loss in dual match play. On Tuesday, September 9, the team competed in the Marion County Tournament at Smock Golf Course and placed 5th out of the 16 schools competing. Congratulations to Annamaria Ebersole who made the All Marion County team, finishing in the top 10 as an individual. They capped off the regular season with a strong performance in the PAAC Conference Tournament held on September 18 at Woodwind.

Middle School Football The Middle School Football team finished their season with a scrimmage at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday, October 19.

In the Sectional tournament at Maple Creek Golf Course on Monday, September 15, the Panthers finished 3rd out of 11 teams, shooting a 419. The team placed high enough to advance to the IHSAA Regional, which was played at Edgewood Golf Course on Saturday, September 20. The team shot a 387 at the Regional, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to advance to the state finals. Congratulations to the girls golf team on an outstanding season and advancing to the IHSAA Regional!

Dear Friends of Park Tudor, As I reflect on the 2024–2025 academic year, I am filled with gratitude for the extraordinary generosity and dedication that continue to define the Park Tudor community. This year has underscored that Park Tudor’s enduring strength rests in a community united by purpose, where intellectual rigor is matched by a deep commitment to character and belonging. This Annual Report honors the more than 1,000 donors whose contributions between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025, advance our mission of empowering students to thrive in heart and mind through exceptional academics and meaningful experiences in a community where every student belongs. In the pages that follow, we celebrate and acknowledge the generosity of all who support Park Tudor, as well as the significant milestones achieved over the course of the year. A notable highlight of 2024–2025 was Park Tudor’s inclusion in the Lilly Endowment Marion County K–12 Private Schools Initiative. Through this significant opportunity, the school was awarded a $477,500 grant in support of Health Horizons, an ambitious program that expands Park Tudor’s commitment to project-based and experiential learning through the interdisciplinary theme of public health. Designed to cultivate academic rigor and real-world relevance, Health Horizons engages students from Lower to Upper School in examining public health issues that inspire curiosity, systems thinking, and civic responsibility. Through this initiative, Park Tudor continues to reimagine the structure and purpose of learning, strengthening our mission to prepare students for lives of purpose and success beyond graduation. The Development Office continues to collaborate with the Booster Club and the Fine Arts Guild to host annual fundraising events that foster community and support vital school programs. In the fall of 2024, the Fine Arts Department hosted a Roaring Twenties-themed fundraiser, where costume creativity was on full display. In the spring, the Booster Club continued this tradition of engagement with two signature events—Trivia Night and Pickle@Park—both of which brought families, alumni, and faculty together in support of Park Tudor’s student-athletes. Collectively, these efforts raised more than $50,000 to enhance athletics and fine arts programming. To connect with our alumni, we continued our regional and local alumni visits. In the fall, we visited alums in Chicago as well as at Indiana University and Purdue University. In the spring, we headed to Notre Dame and Butler University as well as DePauw University. Locally, the Park Tudor Alumni Board of Directors continues to host events like the annual alumni family pumpkin carving and the spring basketball watch party. And, of course, there are our signature events that occur as part of Alumni Weekend. This past year we celebrated alumni with a class years ending in “0” or “5.” It was a joy to watch as the classes of 1975, 1965 and 1960 shared memories and stories from their time at Park Tudor, Tudor Hall, and Park School. Additionally, the opportunity to celebrate Park Tudor’s Distinguished Alumni, Erik Ochsner ’89 and Kate Lehman Trumbull ’00, and Young Alumni Impact Award recipient Pavani Peri ’16, provided all of us with a renewed commitment to our mission, vision, and values. As we look to the future, we remain steadfast in our commitment to academic excellence, character development, and community engagement. Your continued support enables Park Tudor to sustain exceptional faculty, cultivate innovative programs, and provide meaningful opportunities for every student to flourish. Programs and Initiatives Supported by the 2024-2025 Annual Fund The Park Tudor Annual Fund helped make many programs and initiatives across the school possible. Following are just some examples. • The Middle School held a mock election, complete with a visit from the Marion County Election Board and real voting machines.

• An appearance at Nationals by the Upper School Quiz Bowl team. • REV Racing Team swept the top three places at the Purdue University EV Grand Prix.

• The first-ever Marion County Tournament title for the girls soccer team. • A 6-4 finish for the football team, their fifth consecutive season finishing at .500 or better. • PAAC Conference championships for the boys tennis team, girls cross country team, girls tennis team, and girls golf team. • Eight indoor state qualifiers, 13 PAAC Conference champions, and 10 Regional qualifiers in track and field. • A second-place finish in the PAAC Conference for the baseball team. • The boys lacrosse team finished ranked #8 in the state. • Three state meet qualifiers in swimming and diving. • An IISL Championship for the 7th/8th grade boys basketball team. • Third graders presented the Living History Museum, featuring “Changemakers of the World.”

• Three nearly sold-out performances of Shakespeare in Love, the Upper School fall play.

• Five young alums visited campus to share their perspectives about college with Upper School students. • REV Racing Team participated in Indiana E-Sports Network’s (IEN) iRacing season. • A debate tournament hosted at Park Tudor, where our Upper School debaters took first place.

Leading Beyond His Years: How Richard Ni ’11 Made His Mark in Technology By Cathy Yingling Chapelle ’87

Richard Ni ’11 has always moved at a fast pace, even while he was still a student at Park Tudor - he completed the math curriculum when he was a sophomore. But Richard’s accomplishments extended well beyond the math department. He received the Frank Meek Memorial Award, the highest honor that Park Tudor bestows on a graduating senior, and he was also named an Indiana Academic All-Star.

After graduating from PT, Richard went on to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he majored in Computer Science and Philosophy. After college, he moved to San Francisco to begin his career in human resources for two technology start ups - Cruise Automation, a pioneer in self-driving automobiles, and Scale AI, a company focused on building, applying, and evaluating artificial intelligence solutions. He continues to work as a consultant to several tech start ups and venture capital firms, becoming a seasoned executive while still in his early thirties. I recently caught up with Richard to learn more.

You seemed to be heading down the computer science/computer coding path—I love that you describe yourself as a “subpar coder” on your LinkedIn profile—but then pivoted to human resources. Tell me about that transition. MIT gave me a really strong foundation not just in computer science, but also in philosophy and political science. I was able to take a lot of classes that took me in many different directions and gave me a well-rounded background. When I graduated I knew I wanted to work for an early-stage startup and have that sense of ownership, but I didn’t want to go into a coding role. I got into recruiting, and I found I had a passion for HR. I actually did end up transitioning into product management for about a year - I was the main point of contact with General Motors on a self-driving car project as a 22-year-old - but found that I really missed HR. So, I went back to HR, led a 40 person team, and grew Cruise Automation from 120 employees to 700. You really had a stellar career at PT. Tell me about your Park Tudor experience and how it helped to shape you. I’m so grateful for all of the opportunities I had at Park Tudor. I think one of the best aspects of my Park Tudor experience was the chance to try many different things - band, track and field, different extracurriculars, philosophy classes. That helped me find some passions early; it also helped me realize what I didn’t want to pursue. When I finished the math curriculum, the school brought in a college professor so that I could take advanced college-level math courses, and I discovered that I didn’t love those. I enjoyed math competitions, but I didn’t have a true passion for math; it was great to learn that early.

experience can rapidly become proficient in new technologies, and adapt quickly to change. I also think that it is going to become more important than ever to develop the ability to truly connect with people. Developing a network of people who will be willing to mentor you and go to bat for you is critical. Do you have any advice for current Park Tudor students who might want to follow in your footsteps? Find something you love getting really good at, and career opportunities will follow. Now is the time to try a lot of different things and find what you are passionate about. Ultimately, if you love learning you will be successful. In the tech world we talk a lot about having a growth mindset; the world is changing so quickly so nobody can rest on their laurels. The founders I’ve worked with are all voracious learners. I would also advise finding the type of environment where putting in the time and effort to succeed will pay off for you. For me, I loved the environment of a start-up where there was a rapid feedback loop, so I could try things and make mistakes, learn from those mistakes quickly and change my approach. I like to learn by doing and have lots of ownership, and working in a start-up was perfect for me. But different people thrive in different environments. What’s next for you? I’m not sure. I might decide to do something completely different - maybe become a teacher or a therapist.

Who were some of the teachers who influenced you the most? There were a lot. Definitely Mr. (Ryan) Ritz; he was really ahead of his time bringing computer science to the high school level. Certainly having that computer science experience early allowed me to do well in that area sooner, and ultimately I decided to major in computer science at MIT. Also Mrs. (Sarah) Webster; she was my homeroom teacher and was chair of the math department at that time, and she was such a warm and wonderful teacher to all students, and so willing to offer support to math students at all levels. Mrs. (Margo) McAlear was also great. When I wanted to skip a history class in order to take another math class, I’m so glad that the answer was “no.” Those history classes ended up being some of my favorites, and definitely helped develop my critical thinking skills. You were the Chief People Officer for a 1000-person AI company. As you know, there are a lot of predictions that AI will eliminate jobs— especially entry level jobs. How do you see AI evolving and affecting the employment landscape? There’s no doubt that AI will eliminate some entry level jobs the market is definitely more difficult for new college graduates today than it was when I graduated. But I think that people can change their mindsets about AI and view it as an opportunity. Disruption creates opportunity - specifically the possibility to achieve more success early in your career. Historically, people with a lot of experience have had an advantage, but that isn’t necessarily the case any longer. Now, people without a lot of

Remembering David Kivela By Cathy Yingling Chapelle '87

Retired Park Tudor history teacher David Kivela passed away on August 19, 2025 at the age of 81. Originally from Wisconsin, David graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he earned two history degrees. He began his teaching career at Culver Military Institute before he moved to Indianapolis and began teaching at Park Tudor in 1970. David touched the lives of countless students during his 39 years at Park Tudor. His students appreciated his dry sense of humor, and while his classes were challenging, they instilled a love of history. As a former student of his, I can attest that his US history class prepared me very well for the rigor of college— level classes. In fact, it was the hardest class I ever took—and one of the most interesting. In addition to his impact on students, David was a cherished colleague. “David was a tremendous mentor of mine in my early career at Park Tudor; we spoke often about the goal of helping our students visualize history with the way we taught,” said Joe Fumusa, Upper School social studies teacher. "He told me that being able to imagine the intrigue of these people and their stories is the most important insight any teacher can use to inspire their students to love history. Those words remain in my heart and mind many years later and are a big reason why David was such a tremendous legend at PT.”

Outside of the classroom, David was a fixture at PT sporting events. “David was an avid supporter of Park Tudor athletics and served as the announcer for home football games for 34 years, along with being the official bookkeeper for home basketball games for 36 years,” said Courtney Whitehead, Park Tudor’s Director of Athletics. “He had an unconditional love for the school and all it represented both in and out of the classroom. He was very passionate and supportive of Park Tudor athletics, and regularly attended our events. You knew you could always count on seeing David in the stands or on the sidelines supporting the student athletes. No matter the sport, he truly enjoyed watching the kids compete and represent Park Tudor.” He also coached Park Tudor’s Brain Game team for many years. Park Tudor was a family affair for the Kivelas; his children are alums Laura Kivela Schroeder ’90 and Jim Kivela ’86. Laura even carried on her father’s tradition, teaching art and art history at PT for several years.

Park Tudor's Legacy Initiative Tells the Story of Sulo August Kivela By Kathryn Lerch, Legacy Initiative Coordinator Among David Kivela’s many contributions to Park Tudor was his support of the Legacy Initiative Project. Thanks to him, I was able to launch it in 1999, giving students “hands-on history” experiences. Our first Words of War volume appeared in 2001, and the Project continues 25 years later: a tribute to David’s lasting influence. Paul Harvey, a national radio personality for many years, always began the final segment of his broadcasts with the words, “And now, for the rest of the story!” In that spirit, the Legacy Initiative Project honors David Kivela by telling a Project version of David’s family history, with a focus on the military service of his father, Sulo August Kivela. Sulo August Kivela PFC Sulo August Kivela, son of Finnish immigrants August and Tilda Kivela, was born in Rock, Michigan, in 1916. Like many Finns in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the family endured hard labor and the Great Depression. Sulo worked road jobs for the New Deal’s WPA and married Violet Ekquist before registering for the draft in 1941. As World War Two raged, Sulo enlisted, joining Company F, 67th Armored Infantry Regiment, 2nd Armored Division. After training, Sulo landed in France five days after D-Day, fought through Normandy, advanced into Belgium and Holland, and returned to Belgium that December. On December 28, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge, Sulo Kivela was reported missing. On January 15, 1945, the War Department wrote Violet: “This is to confirm my telegram that your husband, Private First Class Sulo A. Kivela, has been reported missing in action in Belgium since 28 December 1944. The term ‘missing in action’ indicates only that the whereabouts or status of an individual is not immediately known. Every effort is made to clarify such cases, though conditions of war make this difficult.” Days later, the dreaded telegram arrived. Colonel Paul Disney of the 67th Armored Regiment followed with a letter of condolence: “Your husband met a soldier’s death in Belgium on 28 December 1944. His fellow soldiers speak highly of his courage. He gave his life for his

country while playing his part in liberating Europe. He was given a Christian burial by a Protestant Chaplain.” Violet, now a very young Gold Star widow, faced her grief while raising their infant son, David. In February she received notice that Sulo was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. Army officials sent maps and unit histories to emphasize his service, assuring her his sacrifice was “in the finest traditions of the military.” Aftermath Through 1945–46 Violet continued to receive Sulo’s personal effects, insurance payments, and correspondence from the Veterans Administration. She eventually moved with her young son to Kenosha, Wisconsin, where they lived with her parents, and she worked as a pattern designer in the auto industry. In June 1946 Violet learned Sulo’s grave lay at Henri-Chapelle Military Cemetery in Belgium, “under the constant care of United States military personnel.” In 1947 she was asked to decide on his final resting place. Choosing closeness for herself and David, she requested reburial in Rock, Michigan. His military headstone was shipped there to his father, August. An obituary in the Ironwood Daily Globe (Feb. 13, 1945) summarized his service: “T-5 Sulo A. Kivela, 28, of Rock, was killed in action in Belgium, Dec. 28. He was attached to an armored division in the First Army and took part in campaigns in France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. Surviving are his wife and 14-month-old son, David, of Kenosha, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Kivela; two brothers, and one sister, all of Rock.” Legacy David August Kivela was born November 23, 1943. Because of war, he was never able to know his father, but grew up to become a teacher of history, informing generations of students about the country, and the civilization David’s own father died to protect. Through the Legacy Initiative Project, we remember both father and son: the soldier who gave his life, and the teacher who gave his all. PARK TUDOR PHOENIX FALL 2025

Park Tudor Model United Nations Turns 50 The Model United Nations at Park Tudor School has a 50-year legacy. Long-standing and widely respected history teacher Mr. Lew Berkeley launched MUN at Park Tudor in 1975, after receiving notice of Model United Nations conferences hosted by U.S. universities from Headmaster George Young’s secretary.

Lew Berkeley’s retirement from Park Tudor in 1981 left a large hole in the enthusiastic Model UN program, and his mantle fell to history teachers David Kivela and Bill Browning. When I joined the history department in the fall of 1981, my first Model UN assignment was to type Resolutions on the Business Office typewriter as Steve Norton '82 and Jeff Kimbell '82 dictated them to me. I also shortly gained Observer Status and attended a college Model UN at Butler University to which Bill Browning took a Park Tudor delegation. (Park Tudor was the only high school invited to participate in this Security Council Model UN, and the invitation speaks highly of the level of proficiency of the students and their teachers.) I found this conference a harbinger of things to come: our delegation represented France, and two of our students (Frank Watanabe '85 and my son Daniel Janzen '85) claimed to know no English and requested an interpreter. As one could not be found, they were left to struggle along with their "fractured" English.

When Dr. Eileen Janzen retired in 2008, I was appointed as Park Tudor's MUN advisor. Continuing the vision of Lew Berkeley, Eileen Janzen and others, I saw Model UN as a powerful way to break down ethnocentrism and build global awareness.

However, accompanied by Alex Bangs '84 they were up and out at 6 a.m, to get "The New York Times" (English edition) so that they could be up-to-the-minute on the day's news. In the spring of 1983, Bill Browning took 13 students (two delegations) to National High School MUN (which Park Tudor had already been attending) in New York. This time the students stuck to English and they were awarded two Best Delegation Awards out of only 12 available. As a result of this national notoriety (and a little lobbying by Andrew Schmid '84), Park Tudor was invited to send a delegation in the following year to The Hague International Model United Nations in the Netherlands. The invitation arrived in October and we were hard-pressed to get organized. As we continued living out Lew Berkeley's vision, we added conferences: Chicago, Harvard, William and Mary, IUPUI, Indiana State in Terre Haute, Dayton, and others. Over the years, three things impressed me about the students as we traveled together and attended the MUN conferences. First of all I admired the level of their participation, their background knowledge of the structures and goals of the UN itself, and their careful preparation of the issues and their assigned country's position on them. Often, this position reflected a point of view quite unlike their own, and they learned to see the world in a larger perspective. Secondly, I was impressed by their public demeanor, their courtesy and poise, and their eagerness that their behavior should reflect well on Park Tudor. It was not unusual in airports for other passengers to comment on this, as they watched our students sitting in a circle playing games or doing homework. I know that other teachers also had this experience. Finally, I was always touched and gladdened by the loyalty that developed among the group, and the way they looked out for each other. This common bond of trust and respect also extended to their teachers and chaperones.

We continued to attend four conferences annually (Dayton, Chicago, Georgetown and The Hague), drawing students from grades 9-12, in a season extending from September to February. While the conventional United Nations programs all function as present-day conferences, the American college conferences also offer noncontemporary committees, such as the Russian Duma (1905), the British House of Commons, the U.S. State Department, and even the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). The numbers of students participating have swelled over the years, with more than 150 students attending a conference annually, and the addition of eighth-grade students in 2012. The heightened participation and sustained enthusiasm of students reflect their deepening curiosity about the global community and their expanding interest in fields such as international relations, public and foreign service, and political science. In recent visits to the Hague, our students have listened to such notable figures as the chief judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), questioned film directors responsible for riveting films about the plight of child soldiers in Sudan, and sat within feet of defendants interrogated for crimes against humanity. Park Tudor students are very engaged at Model UN conferences often featuring as resolution submitters or signatories, making impassioned speeches to large audiences, liaising with delegates from across the globe, or having serendipitous conversations while walking to their tram stop. Since 2010, Park Tudor also has offered a semester-long International Relations class, both in the fall and in the summer. Many students take this class with MUN in mind, and also their future college aspirations. The signature visible presence of PTMUN introduced in 2012 is a white quarter-zip jacket, worn on any school day or even at sporting events by PT students (grades 8-12) or by more than a dozen of the teacher chaperones who have attended one or more of the conferences.

2012-13 PT Model UN Participation Reaches Record Heights More than 155 Park Tudor students in grades 8 through 12 took part in the 2012-13 Model UN conferences, the largest group of students to ever participate. Twelve Upper School students traveled to The Hague, Netherlands, in January to participate in The Hague International Model UN. Park Tudor is one of only nine schools in the United States invited to this annual international conference for high school students. That year's theme was "Energy and Sustainability." Our delegation represented the kingdom of Belgium. In February, 27 students headed to Chicago to take part in the Chicago Model UN conference, and 37 juniors attended the Georgetown Model UN Conference. Meanwhile, 38 students, mostly freshmen, represented five nations at the Model UN conference hosted by the University of Dayton in November. Freshmen Megan Buckley, Bobby Crossin and Pavani Peri were awarded honors for "best position paper" in their respective committees at the conference, which included 500 delegates, mainly juniors and seniors. 2013-2025 Approaching the 50th Anniversary of Park Tudor Model UN Kavya Devarapalli ’26 and Layla Trammel ’26 From 2013 to 2025, the Park Tudor Model United Nations program has experienced tremendous growth, evolving into a community of significant, innovative, and growing minds. In contrast to 2015, when filling delegations was a bit of a challenge, the Park Tudor MUN delegations are now always filled, with students enthusiastically representing various nations in diverse committees. This year, up to 50 percent of the student body are active participants in the program, reflecting the growing popularity of intellectual growth opportunities and diverse experiences that Model UN exhibits. Model UN has now become a key characteristic of the Park Tudor experience. The program and student leadership team have grown simultaneously, becoming significantly more advanced along the way. Past presidents have been notable for the numerous hours of hard work they put into expanding and improving the Park Tudor program, recently marked by Trace Held '22, Abby Langer '23, Hannah Hampson '24, and Insia Zaidi '25. In addition to growing the program internally, there has been remarkable success at highly competitive domestic and international conferences. Our delegates have showcased their dedication, skill, and growth in conferences such as the Dayton Conference, MUNUC in Chicago, NAIMUN in Georgetown, and THIMUN in The Hague, Netherlands. Freshman Neema Chege won Outstanding Delegate in the UN Human Rights Council this year at the Dayton Conference. Additionally, junior Arnay Garyhan was recognized as the Best Delegate at the Georgetown Conference. Abilities that our delegates have acquired to be successful in a competitive national and international conference include effective public speaking, debating matters of public policy, managing blocs of opinion and collaborating effectively in both small and large team settings. One of the most valuable skills that Park Tudor delegates develop is the capacity to work alongside and engage with students who bring diverse ideologies, fresh perspectives, and a range of cultural

backgrounds. When speaking on one of his favorite aspects of the program, Mr. Smith says, “seeing individual students grow to overcome personal fears and make a speech in front of a large group” is always one of the most rewarding parts of running the Park Tudor Model UN program. Overcoming anxieties about contributing personal ideas in a group discussion is a key part of being a delegate. Students return from conferences exhilarated by their spontaneous conversations, filled with renewed energy to debate key world issues. This experience of navigating complex discussions with unique peers gives students valuable skills that extend far beyond the Model UN setting. Our alumni have gone on to say that Model UN was a very formative experience. It has helped them to navigate college life more nimbly, experience the world more fully, and take on influential industry roles with the skills they attained from conferences. As we consider the 50th anniversary of Park Tudor Model UN, we must acknowledge the significant growth that the program has exhibited. It has truly grown from a club to an organization, with an impressive display of student participation on the regional, national, and international stage. We hope future Park Tudor Model UN leaders who update this enchanting story at the 75th anniversary in 2050 will have real cause to value the strong foundations we know today.

Libby Helwig Miller is enjoying retirement with her husband, Bill. They have three children and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Libby writes “After graduation I trained and spent 7 years in the medical profession. A move to the Cleveland area brought changes, and eventually I began my 40-year career in insurance and agency management. Bill and I have enjoyed much travel in the US and across the pond, Alaska being my favorite. I have fond memories of my days at Tudor and my classmates. Would love to hear from them.”
