Upper School Students in Ms. Sidey’s Philosophy class created an "identity web" made up of multi-colored yarn during their lesson on epistemology while exploring Socrates’ statement, "know thyself." Each thread represents a different student, and the identity web is a visual representation of how our various identities intersect with one another in a beautiful way.

Park Tudor School Mission To create an inspiring college-preparatory learning environment, with exceptional educators and extraordinary opportunities, that prepares and motivates students to become balanced, confident, and resourceful lifelong learners.

PARK TUDOR PHOENIX SPRING 2018

From the Head’s Desk As I write this “From the Head’s Desk” letter, we are getting ready to open the new Irsay Family Sports Center for Health and Wellness. The entire Park Tudor community is filled with excitement about this new building and what it will mean for our athletics and health and wellness programs. This building will enhance the lives of all of our students, with specific areas designed to meet the needs of children at all ages and levels of development. Completing this project in the midst of a pandemic has been an enormous undertaking, and has required tremendous effort from many of our faculty and staff members, as well as our hardworking Building and Grounds Committee who helped us oversee the project. I would like to thank everyone who has worked extra hours and taken on many “other duties as assigned” to see the project to fruition. I must also thank our parent community, who has been very patient with reduced parking and increased traffic on campus as we have accommodated the construction crew and rebuilding of the 71st Street parking lot. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the generous support of many donors. In addition to the Irsay family, I would like to acknowledge the following contributors who stepped forward with major gifts that helped to get the project off the ground: Patrick and Kelli Adams Viswanath and Vidyasree Atluri John Bamforth and Sue Mahony Bill and Martha Sue Batt Evan and Abbe Bedel Chris Bodurow Bob and Mary Beth Braitman Aman and Susan Brar Tom and Vicki Broadie Rob and Ruth Brown Brian and Kim Buchanan Henry and Christine Camferdam Tim and Megan Caress Justin and Darrianne Christian Al Christy and Michelle Gillen Dan and Julie Ciaccia Andrew and Richeal Cline Bruce Cordingley and Denise Stolkin-Cordingley

That said, we have not yet completed the “Build Possibility” Capital Campaign. In fact, we are just now launching the public phase; you likely received a mailing about it within the last few weeks. This is a transformative time for Park Tudor, and we appreciate your support as we ensure the future of our school to continue preparing students for “what’s next” - whatever that might entail. Of course, our focus has not solely been the new Irsay Family Center for Health and Wellness. We have had a very busy and successful admissions season thus far, with a return to many of our traditional activities like our Upper School Open House event, “See Us in Action” events for prospective parents, and welcoming prospective students to spend a day here “shadowing” with current students. Our fall sports teams have been wildly successful both during their regular seasons and in postseason competitions - be sure to check out the sports news beginning on page 10. We have been thrilled to “restart the arts” here at PT, with a very successful Upper School play and musical performances returning at all levels. Finally, we launched our new “Elevate” curriculum mapping platform, which articulates our entire curriculum across all departments and divisions; this fulfills a key recommendation from our most recent re-accreditation process. As I enter my final semester as Head of School at Park Tudor, I feel confident about the future and the direction the school is heading. I know that my successor will be entering a school that is strong in every way - financially, academically, and with a spirited and enthusiastic student body and community. I wish you all the best as we enter the holiday season and new year. Gareth Vaughan

Thomasson Family Funds New Scholarship Jeff and Benita Thomasson have funded a new scholarship, the Thomasson Scholars. This four-year scholarship, which is funded in perpetuity, is awarded to an incoming freshman and will cover 100 percent of tuition and fees. Students will be selected for the scholarship by the Admissions department, with preference given to students matriculating from Oaks Academy, another school the Thomasson family has supported. The first Thomasson Scholar joined Park Tudor this fall; a second full scholarship will be awarded in the 2022-23 school year. “Benita and I are so pleased to fund these scholarships that benefit two schools that are very close to our hearts. Our family values the educational opportunities that Park Tudor provides, and we have enjoyed the school’s many co-curricular opportunities. We are pleased the Thomasson Scholars program will provide a transformational educational experience to other families,” said Jeff Thomasson. Head of School Gareth Vaughan worked closely with Jeff and Benita to create the scholarship. “Park Tudor is grateful to Jeff and Benita Thomasson for this wonderful gift to create the

Panther Robotics Season Starts Strong On Saturday, October 2, 14 PT robotics students represented the school at the Marion County VHC Tournament at Purdue Polytechnic High School in Indianapolis. The students had an impressive performance, competing earlier in the year than ever before. All four Park Tudor teams were picked earlier than expected in alliance selections, indicating that the other teams respected their robots, driving skills, and sportsmanship during the tournament. One Middle School team, 6842X, led by Audrey Ko, Lauren Lo, and Anjali Pai, participated in their first tournament. The team had a very strong first showing, finishing with three wins and three losses and a rank of 13 out of 25 teams in attendance.

PT Students, Parents, Faculty and Alums Build a House for Habitat for Humanity In a longstanding Park Tudor tradition, students, faculty, alumni and parents came together to build a home for a deserving family through Habitat for Humanity. The build began back in July, and the home was dedicated to the Garrett family on November 5. A huge thank you to everyone who participated, from spending a day at the build to driving and chaperoning students on-site. In addition, thank you to all of the generous donors who helped support the build financially, including those who purchased items from the Garrett family’s Amazon wishlist.

Team Cobra Kai, led by Daniel de Dios, Cole Burkman, and Alex Wei, advanced to the quarterfinals. Despite some impressive offensive play, they were edged out in that match 135-140 against an impressive alliance of teams in the final seconds of competition. Two Park Tudor teams, PigPen and Ghost Code, advanced to the finals match to compete against each other. PigPen, led by Zach Phelps, Mary Cudworth, and Alyssa Effland, joined forces in an alliance with the #1-ranked team. Ghost Code, led by Matthew Bender, Sruthi Devarapalli, Ibrahim Mohsin, Jathan Pai, and Leo Shaw, joined an alliance with the #2-ranked team. The exciting final match between the two alliances concluded in a tie, 100100, but the Ghost Code alliance had won the early autonomous section, earning six additional points, so Ghost Code edged out the win with a final score of 106-100. Ghost Code earned the Tournament Champion award as a result. PigPen earned the Robot Skills Champion award for scoring the highest total rank in skills during the event. Their score of 463 is currently the highest overall VEX Robotics skills score in the world! PigPen also earned the Excellence Award, presented to the top all-around team at the tournament.

SPORTS NEWS

Sports News BOYS TENNIS The boys tennis team improved in 2021 both on and off the court. Thirty-three boys at all levels of play came out for the team. The varsity team finished the season with a 13 win/7 loss record, and the JV team finished with 8 wins and 5 losses. The varsity team tied for 5th place in the North Central Invitational, and we were finalists in the Marion County Tournament. In addition, the Panthers captured the Pioneer Athletic Association Conference (PAAC) Championships. The following players were named All Conference: Jack Anderson, Michael Fryburg, Ian Harris, Charlie Held, Simon Rothbaum, Oliver Seifert, and Rohan Shah.

of Sectional Semi-Final the team came up just short on a cold and rainy night, losing 25-13 against #1-ranked Lutheran High School. None of this success would have been possible without tremendous play in the trenches; the offensive line averaged 7.6 yards per rush, while the defensive line allowed just 3.1 yards per rush. This group was anchored by Luke Hayes, Kaleb Strong-Jones, Rylan Watkins and Ty Lewis. Aaron Roach finished his career as a Panther with 375 tackles, the second highest in school history. CJ Thompson closed out his career ranked third in receiving yards, touchdowns and receptions. Among the rest of the senior class are key performers at all levels. While the seniors will be missed, the future is bright: six starters will return on each side of the ball and the team looks toward building onto the legacy of greatness that this group has established.

The team’s season came to an end with a tough 4-1 loss to Brebeuf in the Semi-Finals of the Sectional Tournament. The doubles team of Michael Fryburg and Simon Rothbaum advanced in the IHSAA Boys State Individual Doubles tournament, eventually losing a hard-fought three set match to a very good Brownsburg team who went on to be in the Final 8 of the State Finals. To provide additional play, the JV team participated in the Carmel Invite and the HSE Royals JV Invitational. These events provided great competition and match play for our team members. In the HSE Royal JV Invitational, the Panthers tied for 3rd place; Cole Burkman and Will Schmidt won their flight at #1 Doubles position. The Varsity team was named Academic All State for having a combined 3.6 GPA or higher. Ian Harris was named Academic All State Individual, and Jack Anderson, Lucas Bassi, Ian Harris, Nik Mukhin and Simon Rothbaum earned PAAC Academic Achievement recognition.

BOYS SOCCER The boys soccer team had one of the most successful postseason tournaments in PT history, making it to the Semi-State Championship game. While the Panthers ultimately fell short to Westview High School 2-1 in overtime, the hard-fought game capped off a great season. The Panthers finished the season with an overall record of 15-4-1. The team only allowed 14 goals, and scored a total of 70 throughout the season. In the Sectional Championship game, senior Humza Raza scored the winning goal in a penalty shootout against Heritage Christian to win the title. Juniors David Mokaya, Isaiah Crafton and goalkeeper Matthew Bender, along with seniors Raiden Miyamoto and Will Morris, led a strong defense all season with 13 shutouts. Junior George Ferguson and senior Peter Dubie led the attack for the Panthers with 17 and 20 goals respectively. The team will be graduating only four starters, with center midfielders Teddy Kramer and Francesco Nofrini both returning to help lead the charge to another run at the State title in 2022.

GIRLS SOCCER FOOTBALL The 2021 season for Park Tudor football was one to remember! The Panthers totaled over 3500 yards and 400 points in their 11-game season. The record of 8-3 is the best since 2005, including a win in the first round of the IHSAA Sectional vs. Sheridan High School by the score of 26-7. In the second round

The IHSAA moved the girls soccer team from class 1A to 2A based on their success over the last two years. The team did won PAAC title for the fourth-straight year, with five players earning All-Conference honors: 1. Colina Miroff (Conference Player of the Year) 2. Gretchen Farley 3. Jenny Walker 4. Gracie Whitacre 5. Dejanae Butler The players were also well represented on the Marion County Coaches of Girls Sports Association 2021 All-County team: 1. Gretchen Farley 2. Emma Miller 3. Colina Miroff 4. Gracie Whitacre 5. Jenny Walker Park Tudor also placed two players on the All-District team: 1. Colina Miroff (First Team) 2. Gracie Whitacre (Honorable Mention) The team looks forward to continuing PT’s winning tradition in girls soccer next year.

VOLLEYBALL The volleyball team had great success on the court, despite having to play all games on the road due to the construction of the new Irsay Family Sports Center for Health and Wellness. Highlights included wins over Pike High School and Warren Central. In the Pioneer Academic Athletic Conference (PAAC) tournament, they defeated Liberty Christian, Seton Catholic and Muncie Burris, emerging victorious. In Marion County tournament play, they defeated the Sparkplugs from Speedway High School in the first round and Decatur Central in the second round, but eventually fell to Brebeuf, 3-0. The Panthers finished the regular season ranked #4, posting an overall record of 24-4. In the IHSAA Sectional, the Panthers defeated the Trailblazers from University High School in the first round, 3-0. However, they lost in the Sectional Championship to a tough team from Western Boone by a score of 1-3.

CROSS COUNTRY An historic cross country season for PT ended with third and fourth place finishes in the State Cross Country Meet by juniors Sophia Kennedy and Gretchen Farley. These are the highest finishes at the State meet in school history; Sophia has now earned All-State honors each of the last three years. Gretchen

has now earned All-State honors two years in a row. In the Pioneer Academic Athletic Conference championship meet, both the girls and boys teams won the conference crown for the second year in a row, with the girls finishing one point shy of a perfect score. The girls were led by Gretchen Farley, who placed first individually. The boys were led by Spencer Hughes, who finished second overall. At the IHSAA Sectional meet, the girls team was once again led by Gretchen Farley and Sophia Kennedy, who placed second and third respectively; the girls team finished fourth overall. The team’s performance earned Park Tudor a spot at the Regional meet for the second consecutive year and just the second time in school history. The boys team placed eighth and were led by Spencer Hughes, who finished 14th overall. At the Regional meet, Gretchen and Sophia again placed second and third to advance to Semi-State, where they earned spots in the State Championship Meet by finishing second and third once more. Sophia and Gretchen capped off their great seasons by finishing third and fourth in the State; both will be returning next year to make one more run at the State Championship.

GIRLS GOLF The girls golf team got off to a strong start with a 3-way match vs. Ben Davis and Cathedral. At the Lapel Bulldog Classic on Saturday, August 14, the Panthers finished 9th out of 16 teams. On Saturday, August 21, they followed up with a strong performance in the Connersville Invitational, with the team of Sia Patel, Mary Kate Tanselle, Audrey Wang, Anastasia Ebersole, and Lilianna Spartz shooting a 396 and finishing 5th overall out of 12 teams. In IHSAA Sectional play, the team had to battle rain but ended up shooting a 408 which advanced them to the IHSAA Regional. There were a total of 18 schools who competed in the Regional; only the top three overall advanced to the State Finals. The team finished just out of the top 10 and did not advance, but we congratulate the team on an outstanding season!

2020-2021

Annual Report

ANNUAL REPORT

Dear Friends of Park Tudor, The following 2020-2021 Annual Report honors and recognizes more than 900 donors to Park Tudor, including current and past parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff. Over the past eighteen months, our community has continued to respond with kindness and generosity to the ongoing challenges of these unprecedented times. We are proud that Park Tudor was among the small number of schools in the area that were open for daily, in-person instruction throughout most of the school year. This achievement was possible, in part, thanks to generous financial support which enabled the school to be nimble and flexible as needs arose. We are pleased to recognize the generosity of our community on the following pages. I’d like to highlight one new program funded through philanthropy last year: the Paul Fund for Trailing Aid. The Park Tudor experience does not stop with classroom instruction: students extend and deepen their education in many ways - through the arts and athletics as well as clubs, travel, tutoring, and private lessons. In addition to tuition and fees, there are extra expenses that families incur in order for students to be able to take advantage of all of the extraordinary opportunities available at Park Tudor. Offering trailing financial aid to provide additional support for these important programs and co-curricular opportunities is central to making our education accessible to all students after they enroll at Park Tudor. Thanks to a generous endowed gift from the family of Jann and Steven Paul, Park Tudor will be able to offer students trailing aid beginning in the 2022-23 school year. Throughout the year, the development office worked with parent volunteers, alumni and faculty to find creative ways to engage our community. The Booster Club’s annual Trivia Night was held online in January, and friends of the school were able to participate in this popular event from around the country. Since we were not able to travel to college campuses to visit with Park Tudor alumni, we hosted pizza dinners via Zoom for graduates studying at IU and Purdue. In the spring, thanks to mild weather and a large tent erected on Lauth Field, we were able to host many cherished events and traditions including the Senior Breakfast, Senior Serenade, and the fifth and eighth grade celebrations. My thanks to Park Tudor alumna, and current parent, Anne Rogers Mitchell ’85, for her creative vision that brought these events to life. We look forward to welcoming alumni back to campus this year for reunion events and for the opening of the Irsay Family Sports Center for Health and Wellness. On behalf of the entire school community, my heartfelt thanks to all of you for your generous financial contributions, and for everything you do to make Park Tudor such a special place for all our students. With gratitude, Kelly Lamm Teller ’87 Director of Development

ANNUAL REPORT

Programs and Initiatives Supported by the 2020-2021 Annual Fund While last school year was anything but normal, we were fortunate to have enjoyed nearly a full year of in-person learning with students on campus every day. The Park Tudor Annual Fund helped make that possible, along with supporting many other programs and initiatives across the school. Following are just some examples. • A return to performing arts, with both in-person and online audiences treated to Cabaret, Orchestra, Band, Young Strings and Vocal performances in May.

• Middle and Upper School students were treated to a virtual presentation from alums Marya Jones ’78 and Sam Jones ’79 during Black History Month in February.

• Continuing our end-of-year traditions, such as Awards Day, the Senior Breakfast, and Eighth Grade Celebration, all held in a tent erected on Lauth Field.

• Middle School students brought home awards in major math competitions, including the 2020 AMC 8 Math Competition in November, and MathCounts in February.

• Despite limited opportunities to compete, our Panther Robotics team finished the year with continued success, with all seven teams qualifying for spots at the Indiana State Championship.

• A state championship - a first for Park Tudor - for Annie Flowers ’21 in Lincoln-Douglas Debate.

• While our annual Halloween Parade took place without parents in attendance, we livestreamed it on our Facebook page for a virtual audience. Parents loved it so much, this is becoming an annual tradition.

• Full seasons and strong showings for all of our sports teams. • Outdoor physical education classes conducted in a tent erected on the football field.

• Virtual college fairs with schools across the country, hosted by our College Counseling department. • In-person and virtual Open House and admissions events, showcasing Park Tudor for prospective students.

Alumni Feature: The Creative Class BY CATHY YINGLING CHAPELLE ’87

The two alumni documentarians featured in this issue of The Phoenix exemplify Park Tudor’s mission of inspiring balanced, lifelong learners. One is pursuing filmmaking full-time, releasing his first feature documentary; the other is beginning a promising legal career, while still finding time for the creative outlets that she loves.

ALUMNI FEATURE

Skye Wallin ’07: First FeatureLength Documentary Reaches Theaters Skye Wallin ’07 first discovered one of the main characters in his film “American Gadfly” while still a student at Park Tudor. The documentary tells the story of a group of teens who enlist former U.S. Senator Mike Gravel to make a Presidential run at age 89. “I became interested in the 2008 Presidential campaign while I was taking AP World History in high school; Mike Gravel was a candidate and I noticed him on the stage during the Democratic debates. I followed his career from afar ever since, which is how I learned about his latest run for office.”

Tell me more about “American Gadfly.” It’s about a group of high school kids who became upset that the issues they care about – specifically an anti-war, anticorruption agenda – weren’t being discussed enough by the Democratic candidates in the 2020 Presidential primary race. They discover Mike Gravel, who was a U.S. Senator in the 70s and was a pivotal figure in the anti-Vietnam war movement, and become determined to get him to enter the race. It’s essentially a political “coming-of-age” story as these teens use their social media savvy to turn Mike into a Twitter meme and get him noticed by a whole new generation. But it’s much more than just a political story; these kids really formed an unlikely friendship with Mike and he was so full of gratitude for all they did to give him one last ride on the political stage (Editor’s note: Mike Gravel passed away in June).

Skye recently took time out of his busy schedule to discuss “American Gadfly” with me; the movie has been screened to critical acclaim at several film festivals, including Indianapolis’s recent Heartland Film Festival. It won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Ashland Film Festival where it premiered in March. On January 4, 2022, it will be available virtually in the United States and Canada on most of the major streaming platforms; Skye directed and produced the film.

Skye Wallin (back row, second from right) with American Gadfly cast and crew members.

How did the kids discover Mike Gravel? They found him on YouTube. He ran for President in 2008, so there are clips of him from the Democratic candidate debates. He truly was a gadfly – criticizing the other candidates on the stage for not doing enough to end U.S. participation in various wars. And he was ahead on other issues, as well – marriage equality in particular, which none of the mainstream Democratic candidates supported in ’08. The kids admired his positions and his bluntness, so they got his contact info and called him. He was shockingly open to them and that started the campaign. You also discovered Mike as a high school student. Tell me about that. I was taking AP World History as a senior in 2007, and we talked a lot about the war in Iraq. I became very intellectually engaged in the upcoming election, and started tuning in to the Democratic debates. I saw Mike on the debate stage, and was fascinated with him. I learned about his role during the Vietnam war, as well as his connection with the Pentagon Papers – he was the only elected official to read the Pentagon Papers and read them into the public record in the Senate, so that interested me, too, as an alternative version of how the U.S. got into the Vietnam war.

ALUMNI FEATURE I followed Mike from afar over the years; I would Google him periodically to see what he was up to. Then in 2019, I read an article in Rolling Stone about these teens tweeting on Mike’s behalf and looked at his Twitter. It was wild – it was clearly Mike’s beliefs, but in the voice of the kids; Mike really wasn’t attuned to Twitter. I found that this group of kids was running him for President and I thought this would be a cool, fun way to use my filmmaking skills. I contacted Mike and he was open to the idea of making a documentary, I was able to raise some seed money to get started, and it all just kind of took off from there.

Lisa Muloma ’13: Recent Law School Grad Balances Career and Creative Pursuits

How has your Park Tudor education benefitted you in your career as a filmmaker? My Park Tudor education prepared me for filmmaking in many ways. I learned so much at PT about research, which is crucial to both documentaries and fiction films. If I’m writing a script about a character who is different from me, there’s a massive amount of research involved to be able to understand their mindset and motivation. In the Global Scholars program, I developed my skills in writing and editing and fully forming an argument, in addition to the two years of research that went into my final project. For “American Gadfly,” these skills were essential, because I had to clearly explain some complicated ideas like the primary process, polling thresholds and fundraising regulations to the audience. AP World History was also an incredible class for me, studying different cultures, religions, conflicts and just understanding the diversity of our world and our country. I also developed resilience at Park Tudor; there is so much academic rigor and there were certainly times that were a bit of a struggle, but I learned to be persistent and keep going. Filmmaking is such a difficult field to get into and I’ve had challenging times where I considered giving up on this career, but I found that there is so much that you can do if you just keep going and learn from your mistakes and failures. I don’t think I would be able to be a filmmaker without the lessons I learned at Park Tudor. What’s next for you? I’m working on an environmental documentary project about water contamination; it’s a project I began several years ago that I’m revisiting now with the experience and lessons learned from making “American Gadfly.” I also have a fiction project that I’m writing at the moment as a graphic novel (with the intention of eventually making it into a film) – I’m equally passionate about both documentaries and fiction films. How can people follow along with “American Gadfly” and learn about release dates and other news about the film? PARK TUDOR PHOENIX FALL 2021

Lisa Muloma ’13 graduated from Stanford Law School in 2020. She was honored to have been elected by her classmates to give an address at Commencement, and following her graduation she moved to Houston, Texas to work as a Law Clerk for a Federal Judge. Despite her busy career, Lisa has found time to work on a new documentary film about Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Tell me about this documentary. I first became involved with the team in February 2020. Initially, there was no plan to make a documentary. The idea started as a “radical listening” project in early 2018, in which the team traveled around from HBCU to HBCU with a giant grey couch. Students were invited to sit on the couch and share their stories and thoughts about their HBCU experience, and a camera crew was along to document the stories. We realized

ALUMNI FEATURE that this project could be turned into a great documentary, especially since we noticed there was a bit of a vacuum in documentary films about HBCUs. A previous PBS documentary had taken a 10,000-foot view of HBCUs, from their initial inception to the present. Our film gives us the opportunity to delve deeply into the personal stories of three or four interview subjects, using their lives as a focused lens through which to explore these incredible institutions and how they do what they do. HBCUs are responsible for the existence of the Black middle class, as well as 80% of Black federal judges, and a disproportionate percent of Black PhDs, doctors, lawyers, and executives.

I do think I will always have creative pursuits - that is very important to me. Who knows - maybe one day I will pursue an M.F.A in creative writing after I pay off these law school loans. One of my English professors at Vanderbilt always said that it’s better to actually write than to be a writer. Which is to say, as long as I protect space for my art and creativity, it doesn’t really matter whether my poems are paying the bills.

How did you become involved in the project? I have always been interested in storytelling; when I was an undergrad at Vanderbilt University, I majored in English with a focus in creative writing. I was brought in by the documentary team as a writer, to help shape the story and move the narrative beyond the wide array of footage that was shot during the couch interviews. I was intrigued by the opportunity, especially because of the timing; the summer of 2020 brought about a so-called racial awakening that began to expand the ways our society understands our racial history and our racial present. There were a lot of discussions about various systems that need to be changed or even torn down. I saw our study of HBCUs as a way of urging one another forward, past deconstruction, towards a creative imagination. In studying these institutions, which were built to protect and nurture Black dreams, maybe we could take some lessons to inform our national project.

Lisa Muloma (bottom row, second from left) with fellow documentary crew members.

How did your Park Tudor education prepare you for what you are doing now? I was very lucky to have teachers who encouraged me to pursue writing very early on. I started at Park Tudor in 8th grade, and I was shy and quiet - just trying to figure out a new school. I loved English class, and Dr. (Shants) Hart gave me the English award that year; that meant a lot to me as someone who felt a little invisible.

Where are you in the process of making the documentary? We are still in the filming process, after three film trips. So we’re in the dynamic process of editing as well as expanding our footage and adapting our story as we learn more. I am hopeful that it will be released in the next year or so. We’re still waiting for an official title to emerge. In the meantime, you are working full-time as a Law Clerk for a Federal Judge. How do you balance the two? I have a pretty tight schedule and plan out my mornings so that I have extended time to write three times a week; I typically work on the documentary during the weekends. I am fortunate to work for a very holistic judge, who encourages us to develop other parts of ourselves. What are your career plans? Do you see yourself continuing to pursue a legal career, or are there more films in your future?

In Upper School, Dr. (Jan) Guffin really invested in me. He invited me to his office and showed interest in my moody little poems; he critiqued them and insisted on submitting them to the Scholastic Art and Writing Competition. Dr. Dubie encouraged me, as well. I remember him being very intentional about letting me know the sky was the limit for me. I loved all my English teachers: Drs. Hamer and Sharpless, Therese Glassmeyer; their classes were always my favorite hour of the day. I also have Park Tudor to thank for many of my oldest and deepest friendships; we did a lot of growing up here, didn’t we? How can people learn more about the HBCU documentary and follow the progress? We’re on Instagram: @hbcudocumentary and we also have our website, hbcu-couch.com. We are still in the process of raising funds for the film, so anyone who is interested in supporting us can donate at paypal.me/HBCUdocumentary.

For now and at least for the next several years, I’m focused on my legal career. I’m currently applying for jobs as a Federal Public Defender, representing people in Federal courts who can’t afford to hire their own lawyer. I look forward to using my storytelling skills to show judges and juries that my clients are more than the sum of their mistakes.

Park Tudor Senior Makes Her Mark in Wheelchair Basketball BY CATHY YINGLING CHAPELLE ’87

Like her fellow members of the PT class of 2022, senior Amelia Stotts is currently navigating the college admissions process, weighing her options and comparing schools – large vs. small; instate vs. farther away. Like some of her classmates, Amelia is also a top student-athlete pursuing potential scholarships and the opportunity to continue competing at the college level. Her sport? Wheelchair basketball.

PARK TUDOR PHOENIX FALL 2021

STUDENT FEATURE

Amelia first took up wheelchair basketball as a nine-year-old, when she attended a basketball clinic for kids with disabilities at Butler University. “The varsity coach of my current team was at the camp, and introduced me to the program,” said Amelia. “I started out playing in the Prep division, for kids aged 6-13, and then moved up to the varsity division for 13-18 year-olds.” Amelia had always been active, and like any true Hoosier had a life-long love of basketball. “I liked to shoot baskets with my dad,” she said. “Wheelchair basketball was the first sport that I could play like everybody else.” Amelia was also drawn to the fact that wheelchair basketball is co-ed. “I’m very competitive, so the fact that I can compete on an even playing field with boys is appealing to me.”

recruiting trips to the University of Alabama and the University of Illinois. She’s also looking at other universities that don’t have wheelchair basketball programs. “I could still play on an adult team that’s not affiliated with a university, although it would be challenging due to the travel and distance involved. My dream is to play in college and live in a community with many others who have disabilities.” Another dream Amelia hasn’t ruled out is to potentially play on the U.S. national wheelchair basketball team, which competes in the Paralympic Games. For now, though, she is focused on her ultimate career goals. “I would like to eventually become a Child Life Specialist – the person who guides children and families through surgeries and hospital stays. I’ve had nine surgeries during my lifetime, and the Child Life Specialists have had a huge impact on me and my parents throughout the process.” Amelia adds that one of the challenges most wheelchair basketball programs face is funding. “It gets expensive to cover travel and there are other costs,” she said. “It’s not surprising that it’s mostly large universities that have the money to fund a wheelchair basketball program; still, the amount of funding pales in comparison to standup basketball.” The more adaptive programs there are, the more opportunities for people with disabilities to compete in sports like their able-bodied peers.

She currently plays for the Racers, a team affiliated with the Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana (RHI). Her team is among the top junior teams in the nation, part of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA); last year, they finished seventh out of 16 teams who were invited to compete in the national wheelchair basketball tournament in Kansas, which follows a similar format to the March Madness college basketball tournament. Amelia’s fellow PT students were introduced to wheelchair basketball when she was in Middle School. During disability Awareness Week, the adult RHI team visited Park Tudor to put on a wheelchair basketball exhibition. Some of Amelia’s teachers took on the visiting team. “I think it gave them a new appreciation of how difficult and demanding wheelchair basketball can be. I think they were surprised by the speed and physicality.” Since wheelchair basketball athletes can’t use their legs, all the effort comes from their upper body. Amelia regularly does strength training and pushing exercises in her ball chair to stay in shape; during tournaments, she sometimes has to push her chair through 3-4 games in a single day. There are currently five universities in the nation that have women’s wheelchair basketball programs (compared to nine men’s programs), and they are all large state schools – the University of Arizona, University of Illinois, University of Alabama, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and the University of Texas at Arlington. Amelia recently embarked on

If you would like to see Amelia and her team in action, the Racers are hosting the Midwest Conference Tournament March 5-6 at Best Choice Fieldhouse in Fishers, IN. Through their foundation, you can specifically support Amelia’s wheelchair basketball team by indicating “Varsity Racers” on your donation.
