Welcome to the 2015 Town of Aurora Fall Parks & Recreation Services Program Guide!

Autumn is always a beautiful season, with gorgeous fall colours and kids going back to school, preparing for new adventures. With the new season and changing routines, I encourage all residents to continue to stay active and encourage physical activity for your families.

2015 is the Year of Sport in Aurora. The Town is striving to make our community the healthiest in all of Canada. The Town, sports organizations in Aurora and other key stakeholders are developing a strategy over the next five years to keep residents of all ages active and living healthy lifestyles.

The Town of Aurora offers affordable recreation options for all ages and abilities. Whether you want to learn yoga, take a cooking class or play soccer, there are a variety of classes for everyone to enjoy.

Mayor Dawe and Council have proclaimed 2015 to be the “Year of Sport” which celebrates the role of sport in our community and encourages everyone to participate and seek the benefits of sports. The Parks and Recreation Services Department will support “Year of Sport” by implementing the following three initiatives: 1. Parks and Recreation Master Plan Review The Parks and Recreation Master Plan is to provide a vision, future direction of activities, programs and facilities to the year 2021 (the projected date of the municipality to build out). This will be an opportunity for all our stakeholders to participate in creating the vision of the future. The plan will examine service levels, facility development and cost implications in addressing the Parks and Recreation needs of the community.

2. Development of a Sports Plan The Sport Plan will ensure we continue to actively invest in sport; encourage greater collaboration with community partners; and make good use of existing facilities. The Plan will provide guidance to staff and community sport organizations for delivering quality sports programs in Aurora over the next 5 years. It will focus on developing community partnerships, public engagement and investments that will ultimately enhance sport delivery throughout the Town.

3. First Aurora PlAY Day - Physical literacy for Aurora Youth Six hundred Grade 2 and 3 students from selected Aurora schools will be invited to participate in PLAY Day (Physical Literacy for Aurora Youth). These children’s basic FUNdamental skills will be assessed and evaluated by Staff, volunteers and coaches from Town Aurora and many partners of Sport Aurora.

Laying the foundation for an active life! Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L) Aurora is a local initiative that seeks to improve the quality of sport and physical activity in Aurora by increasing opportunities for sport and recreation participation.

Aurora will be implementing physical literacy in sport and recreation activity which is the foundation for lifelong participation, and strengthening the community sport and recreation sector by building capacity.

DEVEloPING PHYSICAl lITERACY

Just as learning the alphabet is necessary to read, the development of basic movement skills and sport skills is critical to help children feel confident participating in physical activity. The most important step toward developing physical literacy is mastering fundamental movement skills. (FMS) Physical Literacy = Competent and Confidence • Physical Literacy = Active for life

Active Start (ages 0 – 6) Children need to be introduced to unstructured active play that incorporates a variety of body movement. Children this age experience a large variety of basic movement – like running, jumping and throwing. Look for these Active Start programs:

learn to Train (ages 9 – 12) Children in the Learn to Train stage are ready to begin structured physical activity and sport activities. However, the emphasis should still be on general sports skills suitable to a number of activities. Try these Learn to Train programs:

Non-medical related cancellations for AQUATICS will only be accepted prior to the second regularly scheduled class.

Participants receive a full refund less a $20.00 administration fee, when cancelling before the class starts. Participants receive a refund, on a prorated basis, less a $20.00 administration fee for all other refund requests. There will be no administration fee for refunds due to medical reasons (pro-ration still applies). A medical note must accompany the refund request. Please note that refunds or transfers will be processed according to the date your written request is received by our Department. Please allow 3-5 weeks for all refunds to be processed.

Our registration form has been designed to allow more than one participant per family to register for programs on the same form.

Please complete all of the required information to ensure that you are placed in the correct program.

Please note that you can not withdraw from a program using e-PLAY. Transfers will only be accepted prior to the second regularly scheduled class. There will be no penalty for transferring.

Registrations

We reserve the right to withdraw, postpone, cancel or combine classes, limit registration, or change instructors. Every effort is made to enroll you in your first program choice, and to ensure that your recreation experience meets and/or exceeds your expectations. Submission of a registration does not guarantee acceptance in the requested program. The Parks and Recreation Services Department will send out confirmation of your enrollment. If you have not received the confirmation two days prior to the commencement of the program, please call (905) 841-7529 or (905) 726-4770 for verbal confirmation.

If a program is cancelled, you will be notified by telephone.

Please provide us with day and evening contact numbers on your registration form. You may transfer to another program, free of charge (subject to space availability), receive a full refund, or apply a credit note to your account.

All NSF cheques will be charged $40.00 (tax included) and will need to be replaced by cash or certified cheque.

Where there are three or more children in the same family taking part in the SAME PROGRAM AREA, the third and subsequent child will be charged half price. Discounts will be taken off the lower priced program.

We regret that this does not apply to some of our Aquatic Leadership Programs, H30 Lessons, Private/Semi-Private Lessons, Special Needs Aquatics, Special Events, or to Club Aurora Memberships or Speciality Programs. Please contact the Reception Desk at 905-841-7529 for details.

Each month, an artist’s work is exhibited in the Skylight Gallery at the Aurora Town Hall. These artists displayed each month are chosen in a draw in advance. You are invited to participate in this draw. Draw forms are available at www.aurora.ca/skylightgallery. The draw will take place on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at 12 p.m. Applications for the draw can be submitted in person at the Town Hall, Parks and Recreation Services Department, mailed in or faxed in to 905-727-7097.

New Flexible Option!

This NEW program is mandatory for those 12-13 years old who wish to obtain a fitness membership at Club Aurora.

You will learn from one of our certified fitness staff safe exercise techniques and the proper use of our fitness equipment.

An educational component with a different discussion topic will begin each session followed by an equipment demonstration and a mini workout session. An individual exercise program is created and fully demonstrated.

Participants MUST complete 4 one-hour training sessions to qualify. All training sessions are booked exclusively in the fitness centre through the fitness staff.

Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion and a 1 month extension on any length fitness memebership purchased upon the successful completion of the program.

T.I.M.E. (ToGETHER IN MoVEMENT AND EXERCISE)

A new program developed by the Toronto Rehab Centre for those who have suffered a stroke, are experiencing neurological muscular difficulties, have MS or have suffered a brain injury. It works to improve balance and coordination to allow you to live as independently and confidently as possible. Participants should be able to walk 10 metres AQUAFITNESS 55+ with or without a walking aid. We are pleased to offer this 30 minute specialty class for people who suffer from arthritis. The objective of the recreational exercises are to reduce pain, and help maintain or increase joint mobility, muscular strength and endurance.

AQUA THERAPY

This program, completed exclusively in our therapy pool, is designed to be gentle on the joints while focusing on muscle conditioning, improving strength, balance and flexibility. The program is designed to allow participants to stay active, reduce chronic pain and aid in preventing future injuries.

BoSU BASICS

Along with balance and core development, this new class using the BOSU will challenge your agility, cardiovascular system and brain. If you’re looking for some variety, no matter what your age or fitness level, give the BOSU a try! All levels welcome!

DIAPER FIT

This 45 minute mom and tots program requires the use of a baby floatation device (tugboat) which we provide. It is a gentle shallow water workout for parents of tots under 3 years of age.

lEARN To RUN

Want to learn to run? Want to improve your running and overall fitness with focused drills, skills, strengthening and stretching? This program includes training in the fitness centre, on Aurora’s local trails, in adjacent neighbourhoods and on the new and improved indoor track. It will be a fun group environment in which to achieve your own personal goals.

Here’s a fitness class where babies are welcome - and new moms have a chance to meet other new moms in Aurora. The focus of this 10 week program is on postnatal weight loss using strength training and lifestyle modifications. Babies must be less than 1 year of age and not crawling.

Gentle stretching exercises can help to increase the elasticity of the muscles and connective tissues. It is important to have a good degree of flexibility to help lower your chances of injury during exercise and to alleviate postural problems.

aquaTiCS ruleS & renTalS GENERAL POOL RULES • Disposable and cloth diapers are not permitted in the water. Please use swim diapers designed for pool use.

• Individuals with a serious medical condition should be accompanied in the water with another individual knowledgeable of their condition and inform the Lifeguard.

• Those with open sores or communicable diseases will not be admitted to swimming pools unless a medical doctor’s certificate is presented to the pool supervisor.

• Spectators are required to view lessons from the “designated” viewing galleries only.

• Please do not bring food and/or beverages onto pool decks or viewing galleries, water only contained in plastic or non-breakable bottles.

• Outdoor Shoes must be removed before entering the shower and pool area.

CHANGE ROOM POLICIES • Families of any age, of the same gender are encouraged to use the gender specific change rooms.

• Mixed gender families, unaccompanied children and persons with identified special needs and their caregivers are encouraged to use the family/special needs change room.

• Parents/guardians accompaning children of the opposite gender, age 6 yrs+ are encouraged to change in separate cubicles.

General Swimming Lesson Information

What to Expect from Swimming Lessons

Support your child’s learning through participation in the recreational swimming programs. Set realistic goals for your child, encouraging them to do their best. Learning to swim can be enjoyable, but like many skills, it takes time, practise and patience.

It is important to remember that each swimmer advances at his/ her own pace. Not completing a level the first time, or even the second time, simply means there are important skills to continue to improve upon. Success in swimming lessons comes in many different forms – learning new skills, increasing confidence, and gaining a feeling of accomplishment.

What Level Should I Register In?

Visit our pool and one of the Aquatic Staff can assist you in determining what level to register in. The Department of Parks and Recreation offers free swimming lesson assessments. Please contact the Deck Supervisor on duty to request a screening during scheduled leisure swim times.

Repeating a level?

Show your last report card to the Instructor to allow practise time on skills requiring development. To progress to the next level, all items must be completed.

Lesson Start Time

Participants should go to the pool deck at the lesson start time (not earlier). You may wish to escort your child to their lesson on the first day to meet the Instructor. Please remove outdoor shoes in the shower area and pool deck.

Deck Supervisor

There is a designated Deck Supervisor on deck and available to answer your questions or concerns. They also provide a link between you and the instructor. Ask and the Deck Supervisor will be happy to assist you.

Parent’s Day

Parent’s Day will take place during the 5th lesson. Parents are invited on deck to watch their child’s swimming lesson and take pictures. Classes will end 5 min. early to give parents the opportunity to talk to their child’s instructor about their progress. If you wish to visit on deck, please remember to remove your shoes!

Please note that picture taking is only permitted on Parent’s Day.

Make-up Lessons

Occasionally lessons may be cancelled due to pool fouling, mechanical, or chemical problems. Makeup classes due to participant’s illness or personal commitments will not be available. Dry-land water safety lessons are part of all learn-toswim programs. Where a pool may close in an untimely manner, Instructors will use the time to focus on dry land water safety. If this is not possible, a credit may be issued for the missed class.

Pool Fouling/Closure

To reduce the number of closures due to pool fouling, participants not toilet trained are required to wear snug fitting plastic pants.

No disposable diapers. Also, please keep eating to a minimum prior to swimming. Swim diapers are available at the Customer Service Desk.

Change Room Admittance Guideline

For the comfort of all patrons, children 7 years of age and older must use the appropriate change room of their own gender. If this is not suitable a family change room is available.

Personal Belongings

Do not leave valuables and belongings unattended in change rooms or cubicles. Use lockers or take belongings to your program area. The Town of Aurora is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Cell phones, Filming and Photography

Please note that to ensure the privacy of others, the use of cell phone devices, filming or photography will not be permitted in the change rooms, viewing gallery or pool area during swimming programs or recreational swims.

Stroller

Strollers are not permitted on the pool deck or in the shower area.

Please use the designated stroller parking area located in the family change room.

Family Change Room

The family change room is for mixed gender families, unaccompanied children and persons with identified special needs and their caregiver. Everyone else is encouraged to use the gender specific change rooms.

Aquatic leadership Refund Policy All aquatic leadership courses require 100 per cent attendance. Late admission cannot be granted. For this reason, cancellation requests must be submitted a minimum of seven (7) business days prior to the start of the first class in order to receive a refund. No refunds will be issued for late requests or withdrawls once the course has begun.

Leadership Programs WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION INSTRUCTOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM The Canadian Red Cross is in the process of revising their Swimming and Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Program. As of January 2016, the Assistant Water Safety Instructor (AWSI) Course will no longer be offered. Candidates will now be required to take only the Water Safety Instructor Course, as shown in the chart below. The pre-requisite for this course is 15 years of age and Bronze Cross. Candidates will be required to purchase new materials come January 2016.

Current AWSIs need to complete their WSI course by December 31, 2015.

The 12 hours of volunteer teaching experience can be completed during the Winter 2016 session.



If a candidate is unable to complete the hours during the outlined time frame, they will be required to begin at the first step in the process outlined below.

1. Skill Evaluation

Candidates are required to attend a 6 hour skill and stroke evaluation session, equivalent to the Red Cross Swim Kids 10 performance criteria. Instructor Emergency Response (IERs) will also be evaluated at this time.

2. Online Modules

This online learning allows the learner to learn at his or her own speed—focusing on what is important and how it connects to them. The multiple self-directed online modules will require approximately a total of 14-20 hours of time to complete.

3. Teaching Experience

Candidates are required to complete a minimum of 8 hours following the online learning, and prior to the in-person component. Candidates will have a frame of reference to reflect on and link to the theory of the course.

4. Classroom and Pool

This 21 hour component follows the teaching experience and furthers instructional ability by focusing on how to effectively plan, teach and evaluate the Red Cross Swim programs. Here the candidates will complete a variety of practice teaching exercises.

5. Certification

Upon completion of all the above requirements, candidates will be certified as a Water Safety Instructor for a period of 1 year.

6. 3 Online Modules

In order to extend the 1 year certification to 2 years, candidates must complete an additional 3 online modules, within 1 year.

(Ages 6 months to 4 years) This parent and tot program has been created to allow for sibling interaction with only one parent or guardian per family. Through seasonal crafts, songs, activities and the use of age appropriate equipment, enjoy your children as they explore their surroundings. Each child must be individually registered.

Pre-School Programs A CHILD’S VIEW

(Ages 3 to 5 years) This recreation program is an excellent opportunity for children to learn socialization, independence and creative skills through play and hands-on activities. The children will participate in different themes each week which may encompass working with the alphabet, numbers, shapes, colour, sizes and much more. Our experienced ECE qualified staff, at a ratio of 1:8 will have the children begin the day participating in a circle environment then moving on from station to station at their own pace. You will need to provide your child with a nutritious snack each day as well as indoor play shoes. Your child must be fully toilet trained. Staff will phone registered participants with orientation details. Orientation for registered participants is: Wednesday September 16th at 10:00a.m. at the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex. *In preparation for full day Kindergarten children now have an opportunity to join us for a full day. Please provide your child with a complete lunch. Please note that a quiet/nap time will not be a part of the curriculum.

DANCE - TWINKLING TOES

(Ages 3 to 4 years) This fun and creative dance program offered by the Canadian Children’s Theatre Co. introduces young children to the joys of dance. This program combines creative movement with the basic components of ballet and jazz. The young dancers will have the opportunity to develop grace and creativity, while having fun and allowing their personalities to flourish. Children will showcase their ‘twinkling toes’ for family and friends in a final performance featuring the music from a popular children’s movie such as Beauty and the Beast, Peter Pan, Cinderella, Hercules and Tangled! The only experience needed is knowing how to have fun and having a love for dance. Costumes and all materials will be provided. Participants can register over multiple sessions without repeating the same performance. NOTE: this program runs without in-class parent participation.

FUN WITH ME

(Ages 2 to 3 years) Youngsters will enjoy a fun-filled morning with a parent, including circle time with songs, stories, games and co-operative play with toys. Using a wide range of materials children and parents will discover the joy of sharing creative imagination. For safety reasons, please register only one child per adult.

JUMPING JELLYBEANS PLAYTIME

(Ages 12 months to 5 years) This un-structured supervised playtime is designed for parents/guardians and their kids, to enjoy a healthy and active start to their weekend. Join us at any time during the 2 hours in an activity room full of balls, riding

cars, mini gym equipment and so much more.

KINDERMUSIK CUDDLE AND BOUNCE

(Ages 0 -12 months) Cuddle, bounce, and bop with your baby in Kindersmuik’s newest curriculum. Whether your baby is five weeks or five month, this class will be perfect for you! With ageappropriate activities for newborn, infants, and crawlers, this parent-child music and movement class will help you strengthen those early parent-child bonds, understand your baby’s development, and heavily focus on child development and communication with your baby. You and your baby will enjoy instrument play, dance, exploration time, and together time – and you’ll get expert advice and parent resources based on the most recent research in baby development.

KINDERMUSIK – WIGGLE AND GROW

(Ages 2 To 3 years) This music-filled class celebrates the unique joys of your growing child. Each week your child will love singing, dancing, and playing instruments with you and her new friends and you’ll love helping her practice a wide variety of abilities such as gross and fine motor skills, turn-taking, social skills, and active listening,. In class, we’ll also share tips and ideas for using music through the week. Plus, the fun (and learning!) continues with the Kindermusik @Home digital home material, including music from class, musical activities, and each month’s story.

PUCK POWER!

(Ages 4 to 5 years) What a great Canadian Tradition - might as well start your little one off right. This instructional program concentrates on skating, skills and development, however, it is NOT a learn to skate program. With our coaches, your little ones will build the confidence they need to skate all around the ice. Full equipment is mandatory, including a CSA approved hockey helmet. A bicycle helmet is not acceptable.

MINI GYM

(Ages 4 to 6 years) A great way to introduce your child to the steps and tumbles of gymnastics. Children will start with a warm up game and stretch, they

MUSIC - MUSICAL MAESTROS

(Ages 3 to 4 years) This fun and creative music program offered by the Canadian Children’s Theatre Co. encourages a playful experiencing of music for young children. Participants will begin to develop a repertoire of rhythmic and tonal patterns, the building blocks of musical language. Children will enjoy sing-a-longs, rhythm echoes and instrument play as they are introduced to musical skills such as tempo, dynamic, musical notation and solfege (do-remi). The musical maestros will mesmerize their family and friends with a showcase of their new skills and favourite songs on the final day of classes! NOTE: this program runs without in-class parent participation.

PARENTS & PIPSQUEAKS

(Ages 6 months to 4 years) This parent and tot program allows for positive sibling interaction with only one parent or guardian per family. Parents are encouraged to participate with their child during the transitional process of this program. Your child must be toilet trained or in pull-ups. This program has been designed to build the child’s confidence towards a gradual separation from their parent. For safety reasons, please register only one child per adult.

PLAYBALL - TWO CAN DO (Parent and Tot)

(Ages 2 years) This course provides a wide range of suitable activities which stimulate and improve locomotion, balance, body and spatial awareness, muscular development and fine motor skills. Praise, encouragement and an environment which is rich in opportunities to experience success, acceptance and safe boundaries will ensure that your toddler blossoms. Appropriate social interaction, listening to instructions, participating, taking turns, sharing, assisting and having fun with friends are some of the important life skills facilitated and reinforced.

PLAYBALL - SPORT COACHING FOR KIDS

(Ages 3 to 4 years) A comprehensive program of games carefully devised and structured to teach pre-schoolers a wide range of sports and social skills in a safe, non-competitive, happy and fun filled environment.

The program, taught by theatre professionals, also features movement, music, production crafts and basic acting instruction. Costumes and all materials are included. (Ages 3 to 4 years) Hip Hop for Tots is a fun, high-energy class offered by the Canadian Children’s Theatre Co. (Ages 1-2 years) The Monkeynastix’s program will encourage children to explore and discover the world through their senses and their bodies.

Beginning with our Babynastix warm up our little monkeys and parents participate in a song, stretch positions and locomotion. The children and parents then participate in 2 to 3 main activities with a new activity added each week. After finishing our fun packed lesson with a closing activity and music, each monkey is rewarded with a Monkeynastix sticker. Note: children must be walking independently.

(Ages 2-3 years) Developing more independence, our 2-3 year old members participate with partial parental involvement. Children work on developing the fundamental movement skills - balance, coordination, fine and gross motor skills, agility, etc. Each class starts with positions, songs, and a fine motor activity.

Children then participate in a main activity circuit with substations focusing on a particular theme such as balance, strength, floor skills, cardio, speed and agility etc (equipment changes weekly). Children’s Programs BASKETBALL BASICSSKILLS AND DRILLS

(Ages 5 to 6 years) This exciting co-ed program introduces young players to the game of basketball. Fun and fundamentals are the focus of this program which will include dribbling, shooting, passing, and rules of the games.

LITTLE SLUGGERS – INTRO TO T-BALL

(Ages 5 to 6 years) Swing batter, batter, swing! This unique program teaches your child the basics of T-ball.

Participants will learn to hit the ball from the tee, catch, throw, run the bases and other skills to help them become little baseball players.

Your little slugger will build friendships, make memories and gain confidence for a great start to playing baseball. Participants are required to bring their own baseball gloves.

PLAYBALL – SPORT COACHING FOR KIDS

(Ages 5 to 6 years) This part of the Playball program focuses on the more demanding ball and sports skills.

The foundation skills are laid for the six popular sports in which your child may want to participate: hockey, basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis and volleyball.

PLAYBALL – INDOOR SOCCER

(Ages 5 to 6 years) & (Ages 7 to 8 years) Learn and practice your skills in a fun and non-pressured way. Learn the rules, develop more confidence, learn teamwork and practice strategies like attack and defence. All lessons remain fun-filled and non-competitive. Each child’s needs are taken into consideration. This program is a great way for boys and girls of all abilities to be part of the “team”.

KIDS LOVE TECH – KINDER BOTS

(Ages 5 to 6 yrs) Ready to have fun with electronics and robotics?

This program is designed to introduce young children to technology through project building, experiments, games and crafts. Children build a variety of projects using real circuits, motors and cables. Note: All technology kits, projects and tools are provided for in class use.

DANCE - FANTASTIK FEET

(Ages 5 to 7 years) This fun and creative dance program offered by the Canadian Children’s Theatre Co. introduces young children to the joys of dance. This program combines creative movement with the basic components of ballet and jazz. The young dancers will have the opportunity to develop

grace and creativity, while having fun and allowing their personalities to flourish. Children will showcase their ‘fantastik feet’ in a final performance for family and friends featuring the music from a popular children’s movie, such as Brave, Toy Story, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King and Frozen! The only experience needed is knowing how to have fun and having a love for dance. Costumes and all materials will be provided. Participants can register over multiple sessions without repeating the same performance.

KINDER KARATE

(Ages 5 to 7 years) This introductory program allows younger participants to progress through the training at an appropriate pace, while focusing on key areas of skill development such as coordination, balance, strength, flexibility and endurance.

Please come dressed in comfortable and loose clothing such as jogging pants and a t-shirt.

MUSIC – BROADWAY KIDS

(Ages 5 to 7 years) This fun and creative musical theatre program offered by the Canadian Children’s Theatre Co. provides an enriching environment for children to discover and develop their passion for drama, song and dance. An imaginative environment filled with the perfect harmony of acting, movement, singing and hands-on activities engages children in learning and allows them to explore music concepts while building concentration, self-expression and confidence.

The children will showcase a collection of show-stopping numbers as they present their 30 minute musical chosen from a collection of popular family musicals such as Annie, Aladdin, Cinderella, Willy Wonka, Peter Pan and many, many more in a final performance that is sure to get the audience up on its feet!

THEATRE - MUNSCH FOR MUNCHKINS

(Ages 5 to 7 years) Children have fun and gain confidence through the unique, fun and creative methods developed by the Canadian Children’s Theatre Co. Laughter and applause are guaranteed when the children perform one of the many, zany Robert Munsch stories such as Mortimer, Stephanie’s Ponytail or Thomas’ Snowsuit for parents and friends on the last class. The program, taught by theatre professionals, also features movement, music, theatre games, production crafts and basic acting instruction.

Costumes and all materials are included.

Participants can register over multiple sessions without repeating the same story.

NOTE: this program runs without in-class parent participation.

JUST US GIRLS

(Ages 6 to 12 years) Let’s spend some quality girl time while creating some fun, creative artsy projects. A different project will be created each week such as, jewelry making, pottery, ceramics, fine art painting, mosaics etc. Please dress for mess, as you never know what you will be doing!

WACKY SCIENCE

(Ages 5 to 10 years) Through the experience of Wacky Science your child will participate in a variety of different experiments set up in labs where participants can uncover their hidden skills and work on creations their parents wouldn’t dare let them do at home! Join us for a 1 day workshop or an on-going program.

JUNIOR CHEF

(Ages 5 to 12 years) This hands-on introductory cooking class will provide children with an opportunity to experience the joys of cooking while having fun and even being a little messy. Each session provides new recipes and families will be invited to attend a kids created restaurant at the final class. An instructor will be present at each lesson to provide recipes, details and supplies.

AURORA GLEE CLUB

(Ages 8 to 11 years) In this popular vocal and musical theatre program provided by the Canadian Children’s Theatre Co., gleeful participants will learn catchy songs and captivating choreography to all the hottest broadway musicals and the newest pop hits! Together, they will link all the songs together with some hilarious and witty scenes, to create a fun and creative performance. When people launch into song and dance during the course of their mundane day, it’s not unrealistic, it’s awesome! Audiences will surely be singing and dancing in their seats when they are entertained by The Aurora Glee Club on the final day. Costumes and all materials will be provided.

YOUTH RUNNING PROGRAM

(Ages 7 to 10 years) This community based running program is for youth who want to learn new skills and have fun running with others. It is a non-competitive program. All fitness levels are welcome - you just do your best and compete against your own time. In this program, you will learn to build endurance, practice proper running form, pacing, injury prevention and nutrition. Our coaches will provide direction, motivation and FUN! We run on the trails at Lambert Wilson Park.

DANCE - HIP HOP FOR KIDS

(Ages 5 to 7 years) Hip Hop for Kids is a fun, high-energy class offered by the Canadian Children’s Theatre Co. The movements and exercises will develop greater body awareness, flexibility, strength & control as well as musicality, style and performance personality. Students will also be given an encouraging opportunity to express their freestyle movements, fostering their own unique style and building their self-confidence as the class cheers them on. The dancer’s efforts will be rewarded with the rich sound of applause during an interactive performance for family and friends on the final day of classes.

This dynamic and exciting dance program offered by the Canadian Children’s Theatre Co. will combine the basic aspects of ballet, jazz and modern/lyrical. (Ages 8-11 years) Dance to your favourite hip hop music and learn all of the current dance steps and street moves. This introductory-level Hip Hop program offered by the Canadian Children’s Theatre Co. provides a structured method of learning various Hip Hop dance moves in a fun-filled and vibrant class environment. The outcome is an energetic class that not only teaches you Hip Hop movements and technique, but also instills rhythm, coordination and precision. The dancers’ efforts will be rewarded with the rich sound of applause during their performance for family and friends on the final day of classes.

AURORA IMPROV CLUB

(Ages 8 to 11 years) Laugh, chuckle, giggle and holler! These are all sounds you’ll hear coming from the Aurora Improv Club provided by the Canadian Children’s Theatre Co. Participants will play fun improv games to help access creativity, boost self-confidence and develop spontaneity and playfulness. They will explore how to create a wide variety of characters, big and small and learn the beginning fundamentals of writing your own sketches. The Aurora Improv Club will have the opportunity to display their talents on the final class with a culminating and interactive showcase! No experience is necessary, however we do suggest you bring your sense of humour.

KARATE KIDS

(Ages 8 to 11 years) This introductory program is designed with a focus on physical skills development as well as the 3 character rules of Respect, Self-Control and Self-Discipline. Please come dressed in comfortable and loose clothing such as jogging pants and a t-shirt.

PC AND XBOX INTERACTIVE GAME CREATION

(Ages 8 to 12 years) Would you like to create your own Xbox or PC games? This course is oriented for students with no previous knowledge of programming and does not use a single line of code. We use a new visual programming language made specifically for creating games. Design game concepts in a simple, direct, and intuitive manner. There are 20 different characters with different abilities along with multiplayer and multi-level options.

FRIDAY NIGHT SPORTS

(Ages 8 to 12 years) With the emphasis on fun and being active, your child will work on some skill building, teamwork and game play. A variety of multisport activities such as soccer, floor hockey, and running games will be introduced each week. Join us at any time during the 2 hours then stay and play for as long as you would like that night. Please wear proper running shoes, comfortable clothes and bring a water bottle.

LEARN TO TWIRL

(Ages 5 to 10 years) Learn to Twirl is a fun based program that teaches the FUNdamental baton twirling skills, following the guidelines of the Canadian Baton Twirling Federation, and coached by certified instructor form the award-winning Spectrum Baton Club! Participants will enjoy a one hour fun class that will include warm up, baton and

CHILDREN’S YOGA & MINDFULNESS

(Ages 6 to 12 years) This play-based program of yoga/mindfulness/ relaxation introduces the participant to the basic benefits of breath, mindfulness and yoga poses or asana. It incorporates music, play, dance, movement, relaxation, literacy and imagination. Participants will learn everyday ways to relax, sleep better and feel more positive about the changing world around them.

THEATRE – KIDS GET STAGED

(Ages 8 to 13 years) This lively, exciting and instructional theatre performance program provided by the Canadian Children’s Theatre Co. will educate and challenge young people. We are thrilled to announce this year’s project, Mary Poppins!

Jane and Michael Banks need a nanny and one thing is for sure, after Mary Poppins arrives at 17 Cherry Tree Lane, with her no-nonsense approach to making the right choices in life, nothing will ever be the same again. There is only one word that comes close to describing this play, based on P.L. Travers’ delightful stories: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Acting, comedy, singing and dance are all part of the training the young actors will receive

in preparation for their final performance(s) of their full-scale production including professionally designed and built sets, props and costumes at Aurora’s Factory Theatre from April 28th to May 1st 2016.

(Ages 11 to 17 years) Participate in fun activities, and gain hands- on practice! The Red Cross Babysitting Course focuses on 5 main areas: child caregiving, first aid, injury prevention, leadership, and business skills. CAKE DECORATING

(Ages 12 to 15 years) Have you always wanted to try badminton, but never had a chance? Do you play in your backyard or at your cottage? Here’s your chance to test your skills and learn new ones with this new Intro to Badminton program!

Start each class learning and practicing a new skill or technique, then finish off having a blast as you face off against your fellow participants.

JR. LEADER

(Ages 12 to 13 years) This program is designed to complement the Leader In Training summer camp program, whether you have already taken it, or plan to this upcoming summer. Participants will learn and practice important leadership skills in a fun and engaging environment. Together the group will discuss the most important skills and characteristics of a leader and how to embody those. By the end of the course each Jr. Leader will feel more confident in their ability to both lead and work well in a team environment!

KIDS GREAT MINDSHTML PROGRAMMING

(Ages 12 to 16 years) This HTML 5 course is designed for the beginner programmer to learn the fundamentals of website creation. You will be taken through an easy step by step process with each lesson building on the last. As you progress through this course, you will learn what a block level tag is, how to create links, add images, use tables and how to lay out your pages, how to add forms, and even insert video into your website with the new HTML 5 specifications.

KIDS GREAT MINDS- CREATE MINECRAFT© MODS

(Ages 12 to 16 years) Students will learn Java programming by modifying Minecraft© and creating their own Mod from start to finish. Join us in this exciting course and enable your own creativity and features through Minecraft©.

KIDS GREAT MINDSONLINE JAVA LEVEL 1

(Ages 12 to 16 years) This course will be provided entirely online via videoconference, where a Kids’ Great Minds instructor will provide step by step lessons.

Participants will learn the environment setup, basic syntax, objects and classes, basic data type, variable types, modifier types, basic operators, looks control, decision making, numbers, characters, strings and arrays. To participate in this course, you just need a computer (Mac or PC), a microphone and speakers. Once registered, you will receive a link to download the software used during the class and clear instructions on how to install it. This course is part of our intelligent screen time and will be followed by a Java Level 2 course.

MAKEUP APPLICATION 101

(Ages 12 to 18 years) This exciting new workshop is geared towards those aged 12 to 18 who love experimenting with makeup but don’t know how to apply it. We will touch on camouflaging acne &

skin blemishes with carefully applying the right amount of makeup and proper colour selections. Topics include proper product choices, skin types, eye shapes, acne & blemishes, different looks, brow shaping and much more. Students will participate in theory as well as practical work. We are offering three different options, chose the one that suits you best!

(Ages 12 to 18 years) This makeup application specialized class focuses on just the eye area, including advanced tips, tricks and techniques in eye makeup application which includes eyeliner, eye shadow, eyebrows and false lash application. We will be focusing on topics such as application for different eye shapes, ages and styles, long wear tips and tricks and much more! Participants will participate in theory as well as practical work. We are offering three different options, chose the one that suits you best!

RECREATIONAL ULTIMATE FRISBEE

(Ages 14 to 17) Register with your friends and try one of the newest trends in recreation. Ultimate Frisbee is a great way to work out! This program will get your heart pumping and your blood flowing. This program is designed for new and intermediate players of the game. Rainy day location will be the AFLC Gymnasium.

SHOW TIME FOR TEENS

(Ages 13 to 18 years) This dynamic, creative and instructional theatre program provided by the Canadian Children’s Theatre Co. will educate and challenge High School students with an interest in the performing arts. Participants will learn and hone many acting techniques as they work on character development, scene study and thematic analysis in preparation for their performance, which will be determined in the first few weeks of the program. Past performances include: The Drowsy Chaperone, The Pink Panther, Alice in Wonderland, Clue, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead, Marx Brothers Plays, You Can’t Take It With You and many others. We also encourage the actors to showcase their other talents by getting involved in the design and creation of the production and creative elements; sets, lighting, sound, costuming, music and choreography. The final production is sure to be a tremendous and brilliant collaboration of our young, local talent. All will be showcased in performances at Factory Theatre from April 30th to May 1, 2016.

(Ages 11 to 14 years) Join us as we spend our Saturday afternoons measuring, chopping and mixing our way to a delicious lunch and stunning dessert! YOUTH RUNNING PROGRAM

(Ages 11 to 13 years) This community based running program is for youth who want to learn new skills and have fun running with others. It is a non- competitive program. All fitness levels are welcome- you just do your best and compete against your own time. In this program, you will learn to build endurance, practice proper running form, pacing, injury prevention and nutrition. Our coaches will provide direction, motivation and FUN! We run on the trails at Lambert Willson Park.

The course focuses on fun and enjoyment for all participants and is designed to cover practical basic steps for modern party music and introduction to dance as a form of exercise. No partner is necessary.

DANCE – INTRO TO ARGENTINE TANGO

Argentine Tango is a beautiful and sophisticated dance which is danced in several styles to a variety of music. It is quite different from Ballroom Tango, with many intricate

and subtle movements. This course will introduce beginners to the basic and beneficial fundamentals of Argentine Tango such as the technique of lead and follow, movement and musicality. Different tango styles and musical variations will be discussed and demonstrated.

BALLROOM DANCE PARTY - One Night Event

This evening will provide a wonderful opportunity to practise all your dance steps in a relaxed and friendly environment. A large variety of dance music will be played during the evening, ranging from Ballroom, Latin, Swing and Argentine Tango, as well as popular Line Dances. Everyone welcome... partners and singles. Pre-event registration is encouraged but drop-ins will be accepted at the door. Light refreshments will be provided. (Please note: this is not a licensed event.)

SAMURAI ARTS

The SAMURAI ARTS course focuses on the authentic skills of the Samurai warriors through the study of Iai-jutsu: drawing and cutting with the samurai sword; and Jo-jutsu: which employs a 4.5’ walking stick against the sword. The skills

are practiced individually and with partners in drill format, emphasizing the concepts of body control, timing, and distance while giving the participant a unique insight to traditional Japanese martial heritage. SELF DEFENSE FOR WOMEN

The SELF-DEFENSE for WOMEN is a comprehensive overview of personal defensive techniques and strategies covering a range of situations, psychological and emotional conditioning, and awareness. The program is led by an instructor with extensive martial arts and law enforcement experience related to use of force. Loose fitting clothing is required along with indoor running shoes. Please Note: The material covered in the course is based on realistic situations and can be graphic in nature.

CHINESe KUNG-FU

As part of the CHINESE KUNG-FU class, participants will have the opportunity to learn authentic techniques of the renowned Shaolin Temple of Northern China. The focus of this course will be on the 7 Star Northern Praying Mantis Style. The course is taught by Tim Wakefield, 9th generation Master, direct student of the Shaolin Temple and the first foreigner allowed to perform live in China with the Shaolin Monks.

Heart Wise Exercise: The Heart Wise Exercise initiative is intended to integrate the cardiac population into mainstream programs by addressing their physical and psychological

needs. The program provides exercise options to help participants choose appropriate programs and levels of intensities, while encouraging participants to do daily physical activities. A Heart Wise logo is located beside class descriptions that are Heart Wise approved exercise programs.

Arthritis Aquafit: Club Aurora offers a 45 minute specialty class for people who suffer from arthritis. The objectives of these recreational exercises are to reduce pain, help maintain or increase joint mobility, and increase muscular strength and endurance.

Aqua Therapy: This program, completed exclusively in our therapy pool, is designed to be gentle on the joints while focusing on muscle conditioning, improving strength, balance and flexibility. The program is designed to allow participants to stay active, reduce chronic pain and aid in preventing future injuries. Older Adult Programs 55+ years Acrylic Painting (Beginner)

This course will introduce students to the unique “forgiving” qualities of acrylic paint and allow them to experiment with a variety of techniques. Start at the very beginning and learn about choosing paints and painting surfaces and how to make the most of your paint and brushes as you work. Basic colour theory and colour mixing will be explored as well as creating glazes and textures.

Basic Cardio

This basic, cardiovascular only class takes you through simple choreography designed to gently raise your heart rate to improve fitness and burn fat.

This medium to advanced course is designed for those who have had previous fitness training. This class is highly effective in strengthening the cardiovascular system, toning muscles, building bone density and promoting weight loss.

Gentle Pilates for Osteoporosis & Arthritis

Designed for participants with Osteoporosis, Osteopenia or Arthritis, this class will include exercises to increase range of motion in joints, strengthen muscles around the spine and joints, increase bone density, improve posture as well as balance and coordination. Participants leave the class feeling more mobile and relaxed. Exercises are conducted in a variety of positions including: standing, sitting and lying on the floor.

pFIT is a group strength training program that incorporates the clinically-proven p44 Stepper portable resistance device that is specially designed for older adults to be used from a chair. pFIT is a fun, social and safe way to increase lower body strength, improve range of motion, maintain balance and tone up muscles. The innovative p44 Stepper allows each leg to work on its own separate pace and resistance level and digitally monitors strength improvement with a hard copy print out for each participant. Class size is limited to 8 participants.

Qi-Gong

Qi-Gong pronounced Chi Kung uses gentle movements to promote self-healing and relaxation of body and mind. The essential principles are simple to grasp and profound enough that the practices can be refined and perfected over the years.

Stretch and Tone

This class is designed to strengthen and tone muscles to facilitate everyday living activities and improve appearance. A variety of light equipment will be used. The

ParKS & TrailS PEDESTRIAN TRAIl SYSTEM The Town of Aurora is fortunate to have an extensive pedestrian trail system which connects many of its neighbourhood parks, Town Facilities and open space corridors. At present the Town maintains approximately 57 kilometers of trails.

Come out and enjoy a leisurely hike through the natural valley land setting of mixed forests, meadows and wetland habitats of the Holland River Valley Trail, designated in 2000 as part of the regional Nokiidaa Trail. This trail is Aurora’s longest trail corridor stretching from Vandorf in the south (just west of Bayview Avenue) all the way up to St. John’s Sideroad at Industrial Parkway North. The trail corridor links municipal facilities such as the Town Hall, the Senior’s Centre and the Aurora Leisure Complex as well as the Aurora Community Arborteum, Sheppards Bush and Lambert Willson Park.

Another significant trail corridor is the Willow Farm, Lakeview Trail system, a trail linking parks and linear open space corridors within the forested hills of St. Andrews in northwest Aurora. The topography is very undulating as the trail rises up to one of the highest points elevation within Aurora.

All Aurora trails are considered multi-use, with the primary focus being pedestrian hikers. Opportunities also exist for cross country skiers. The majority of our trails are compact gravel surfaces with some asphalt sections through neighbourhood and community parks. Please note that our trails are not groomed or maintained during winter months, and conditions vary widely. Surface conditions can change dramatically during the winter to create potentially hazardous hiking and skiing conditions. All users are advised to respect other trail users, to stay on designated trails and to exercise caution at all times.

CoMMUNITY PARKS & SPoRTS FACIlITIES The town currently has over 75 parks and open space areas with 35 playgrounds and over 700 acres of woodlots. Please come out and enjoy playgrounds, water splash pads, sports fields, skateboarding and a wide variety of other recreational activities in Aurora’s parkettes, neighbourhood and community parks.
