ANNUAL REPORT 2017-2018

The Parkside School welcomes elementary school children from diverse ethnic, social, and economic backgrounds who have a range of language based learning difficulties. We serve the whole child by offering a thoughtfully designed, comprehensive array of academic and support services.

Our goal is to enable our students to pursue learning in their areas of strength, to acquire tools and strategies to progress in their areas of challenge, and to develop respect and understanding for themselves and others.

FROM THE CO-HEADS OF SCHOOL

Dear Friends, We are humbled by the generosity represented in this Annual Report. Parkside is a school brimming with hope and determination for a better future. It is the unwavering support we receive from parents, alumni, friends and staff that keep our school moving forward sometimes against the odds - and for that we thank you.

A cornerstone of the past year was our 30th Anniversary Benefit, where we raised $268,365 to kick off the construction of our new outdoor play and learning space on the third floor terrace. We are so grateful to everyone who played a role in helping this project come to fruition, and we could not be more excited to share the new outdoor space with the children this fall.

Our outstanding volunteers on the Parent Association led by Katie Holliday, and our relentless Annual Fund Committee under the guidance of Caroline Russo Visceglia, successfully raised $792,905 in unrestricted financial support for our school during the 2017-2018 school year. We once again achieved 100% parent participation in the Annual Fund, and set a record for the second year in a row, reaching 30% alumni participation.

This demonstration of faith in Parkside allows us to forge ahead with even greater resolve as we strive to remain true to our mission of serving a diverse group of students.

There is a quote from Dr. Seuss that reads “It is better to know how to learn than to know.” At Parkside, our talented team of teachers and therapists work with each student individually to help them discover their ability to learn, to take on challenges and to advocate for themselves. The skills we teach go far beyond the reading, writing, math, science and social studies that are at the center of our program. Parkside’s truest success is evident in the confidence we see bubbling up when a young student learns to tie her shoes in OT, or when friends encourage one another and overcome their fear of speaking in front of an audience. It is evident when our students learn to regulate their bodies so they can absorb the information they are learning in the library, and when they clearly articulate their questions about a science experiment.

Just as we teach our students to take the “zoops” in stride, we know that Parkside’s success is the result of our ability to change, to grow, to reevaluate, and to learn.

Dear Parkside Community, As I reflect on the past year, I am proud of the direction that The Parkside School continues to take.

Our mission of serving children from diverse ethnic, social and economic backgrounds remains central to all we do. Our teachers and therapists are advancing new techniques, utilizing the latest technology, and customizing their approach to best meet the needs of our students in an ever-changing world.

The 30th Anniversary Benefit brought together alumni, parents and staff to celebrate our school’s rightful place as a leader among special education schools in New York City. It was a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the work that has brought us to where we are, and to look to the future. The proceeds from the event enabled us to set the stage for Parkside’s next chapter by constructing a new outdoor play and learning space on the third floor terrace. This new space will affect the school’s ability to foster imaginative play, teamwork and improved executive function in students for decades to come.

For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2018, our community contributed a total of $1,061,270 for the annual fund and the playground project, as well as arts and movement and other school activities. Our school could not keep its mission-based commitments without these contributions, so on behalf of the entire Board of Directors, we thank you.

I continue to be inspired by the unwavering leadership and determination of co-heads Albina Miller and Leslie Thorne. They are persistent in their efforts to advance Parkside’s mission, to attract and retain the best team, and to steward the school’s resources with the best interests of every student in mind.

As a Board, this year brought to the forefront important conversations about how to ensure Parkside’s continued financial stability. We take very seriously our duty to balance our mission and tradition with the long-term success of the school, and we value the commitment that every donor and volunteer listed in this report has made.

Teaching Growth Mindset In 2017-2018, Parkside teachers in all classrooms worked with students to develop a growth mindset rather than a fixed mindset, using the pioneering ideas of renowned Stanford professor Carol Dweck. As Dweck writes, “In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort. In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work— brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.”

In 3-4, students thought about things that they already can do really well, and things that they are learning to do or cannot do - YET! Teachers and students discussed the word “yet” a lot and used it frequently when students were feeling challenged. 4-3 teachers worked with their students on the ideas of “bubble gum brain” versus “brick brain”. They talked often about the words and phrases that each brain would use. A “bubble gum brain” might use phrases like “those are great mistakes, I can be flexible, I’m stretching to grow, I just can’t do it yet”, while a brick brain might say, “I’m stuck, I give up, I already did my best, or I can’t do it and I never will.”

Students were supported in growth mindset thinking with speech and thought bubbles containing something that that they can’t do YET, as a way of focusing on the “Power of Yet.” In 4-1, teachers and 4

students also focused on the “Power of Yet” and the idea of a flexible “bubble gum brain.” As well, they frequently shared in class meetings about things that were hard at first but got easier with effort, and did sorts about sayings and pictures related to growth mindset. In 5-2, Ms. Ament shared that “throughout the year we talk a lot about perseverance and how mistakes help you improve. Students know that they can always improve their work by trying and asking for support. We give reminders to use strategies learned and this often helps students succeed. Slowly students are changing their language from fixed mindset to growth mindset.”

We are very proud of our students and of all their work towards having a growth mindset. They are learning the importance of perseverance, flexibility and effort, and are growing in their understanding that these are the qualities that lead to success.

Daily we see them overcoming challenges through the “Power of Yet” and we know they will continue to achieve great things!

OUR MISSION IN ACTION

Friendship Time The Social Work Department has facilitated social/emotional learning groups with each class at Parkside for many years. This year these Friendship Times with the class social worker offered students opportunities to more effectively read their peers’ social signals and to practice and master an array of social skills. Through structured games, roleplays and improvisational activities, children develop confidence to take risks and to try out leadership roles.

In our Friendship Times, students also work on developing their capacities for discussion and reflection about salient social issues and dilemmas, according to their developmental readiness. For example, some groups on the third floor engaged in activities and talked about recognizing and embracing differences. “Can a classmate celebrate holidays that are different from those my family celebrates and still be my friend? Can a classmate look different from me and still be my friend?”

On the fourth floor, some groups learned about how children in different cultures manage worried and scared feelings, and one group collaborated to make a class worry doll, which took up residence right outside the classroom. Children could visit, draw pictures for or write notes to the worry doll, with their teachers’ and social worker’s support. On the fifth floor, students used Friendship Times with their social workers to navigate complex issues involving intense feelings about applying to middle schools and preparing to move on. They also worked on issues of internet safety and becoming more informed about how to be savvy and safe with social media.

In every class, children learned about recognizing and accepting a widening range of feelings – in themselves and in others – and expressing and sharing this dimension of human experience in language and play.

Social Work

Play Trainings Over the course of the school year, the Speech and Language Department led a series of play workshops for the Parkside staff, titled “Promoting Successful Peer Interactions.” Staff members learned the importance of play for the development of language, interaction, problem solving and social emotional skills. They enjoyed learning and practicing strategies to foster successful interactions, and ultimately implemented these strategies during Friendship Time in the classroom.

The first play training took place in November. The staff enjoyed playing with various representational toys and board games. The five Speech and Language Pathologists led a rich discussion about the many skills required to play each game successfully. We paid particular attention to executive functioning, theory of mind, nonverbal interaction and ideation.

During the second training, the Speech Language Pathologists presented strategies to “lessen the load” for the children with speech and language challenges, in order to foster successful social interactions during playtime. When discussing representational toys – like a kitchen set, food and cash register - several support strategies were offered for implementation before play began: establishing a group plan (“Let’s play restaurant!”), generating ideas for

roles (e.g. waiter, chef, customer), brainstorming ideas for what the child might do or say (i.e. sit down, order, cook) and establishing roles using name tags (“I’ll be the waiter” followed by putting on the “waiter” name tag).

To foster successful peer interactions during play, the strategy of “broadcasting” was introduced. To “broadcast,” staff members learned to first listen carefully and pay attention to what each child is looking at and thinking about. When one child shares an idea aloud, the adult then “broadcasts” that idea to their peer by stressing only the main point of the idea.

While discussing board games and cooperative games, the Speech and Language Pathologists similarly provided tools for staff members to use before play began as well as during play itself using the board game, Kids on Stage. Visual supports that were discussed for setting up a board game included the creation of a group plan, planning pages for roles

(i.e. one child’s name was written next to the red game piece while a different child’s name was written next to the blue piece) as well as modified game rules (easy, medium and difficult versions) paired with their own schedule and language supports.

The Secret Friendship Game is a means of teaching students that every time they are playing a game, they are really playing two games at the same time! One game is the actual board game and the other game is the Secret Friendship Game.

Following these initial full staff play trainings, the Speech and Language Department led focus groups to around the skill of “broadcasting.”

Focus groups were established based on the age of students that each teacher worked with as well as the types of toys their students were currently playing with during Friendship Time. Teachers enjoyed finding “broadcasting opportunities” while watching play videos and offered many solutions for when and how they would use the technique in the classroom.

Children learn that they can always win the Secret Friendship Game. To win this game, you have to remember that having fun with your friend is more important than winning the game itself.

Children may also make their own Secret Friendship Game rules, which might include being flexible about going first or last, being a good sport by saying “good game” when you win or lose, remembering that it doesn’t matter if you lose, and going with the flow!

Occupational Therapy

Teacher-Child Interaction Training In Occupational Therapy, our team of therapists support student independence by working to improve motor skills, handwriting, sensory processing, and visual motor integration inside and outside the classroom.

This year, the OT department utilized skills learned in Teacher-Child Interaction Training (TCIT), an evidence-based behavioral intervention, to improve management skills this year TCIT helps teachers manage attention-seeking behaviors that may often be disruptive during learning times in the classroom. This program strongly emphasizes building and maintaining positive relationships between teacher and student by using simplified language and effective commands, consistency in management style, firm and clear expectations, and realistic consequences. The TCIT certification process includes group training 8

sessions to determine which children would most benefit from the use of TCIT and several live coaching sessions during OT appointments and SPOT group. With the recent implementation of the TCIT model within the OT department, therapists have seen positive results in overall student behavior including fewer classroom disruptions, improved social-emotional and adaptive skills, increased opportunities for learning, and improved therapist-student relationships.

One major aspect of TCIT is the use of PRIDE skills (giving labeled Praise, Reflecting, Imitating, Describing appropriate behavior, and showing Enjoyment). These skills reinforce desirable behaviors with positive attention while ignoring undesirable behaviors. This teaches students that many of the negative attention-

The positive relationship-based foundation of TCIT training is consistent with other programs and strategies used daily at Parkside and is reflective of our values and commitment in setting up our children for success. seeking behaviors (ie. calling out during learning times, not following directions) are ineffective and models the idea that students are praised for following teacher expectations instead.

Another component of TCIT is the use of Child Directed Interaction (CDI) skills to eliminate unnecessary use of commands and questions when interacting with students. We avoid commands because it can lead to conflict and avoid questions because they are essentially commands. Being aware of how many commands and questions we innocently ask our students on a daily basis, gave us insight as to why commands and questions often go unnoticed or ignored. As an alternative, we can use hinting, shaping the desired behavior, and utilizing when-then or if-then statements, as a last resort (i.e. “When you get out of the ball pit, we can begin to play our game”) followed by PRIDE skills and positive reinforcement (i.e. “Thank you for getting out of the ball pit!”).

strategies used daily at Parkside and is reflective of our values and commitment in setting up our children for success.

The opportunity to become certified and to begin utilizing the TCIT model has allowed the OT department to engage with their students in a manner consistent with classroom management styles. It has provided a method to simplify language and to improve communication using effective commands and clear expectations in order to set up our students for success. The TCIT model has also provided the OT department, as well as the rest of the interdisciplinary team, with new insight regarding underlying causes and motivators that elicit a specific behavior in a child.

It allows the entire team to observe specific negative behaviors to determine the cause and to distinguish when certain behaviors are attention seeking versus sensory related.

The use of the TCIT model has given the OT department a wealth of knowledge, improving our ability to analyze everyday behaviors seen in the classroom and during appointments to best support each child.

Gym Workout of the Week The gym continues to be a place of endless fun and smiles. Working to create a happy and safe environment for our students is what Mr. T strives for, and hopes to achieve each year.

This year, the Workout of the Week (W.O.W.) was introduced to our oldest students, while our younger students were introduced to modified fitness exercises like shoulder taps and burpees. The curriculum is developed to become progressively more challenging, and of course, to ensure kids are having fun while participating.

A highlight of the year was to witness our students ability to transfer the skills taught and practiced in gym, and put them into action during our annual Family Picnic.

It was truly a joy to be a part of and very rewarding to watch.

OUR MISSION IN ACTION

Union of the Mind, Body and Spirit The meaning of the word yoga is union: the union of the mind, body, and spirit, which corresponds perfectly with Parkside’s mission to serve the whole child. The yoga program at Parkside places particular emphasis on improvement in physical strength, flexibility, coordination, balance, concentration, focus, breathing, sequencing, and creativity.

This year the main focus was on mindfulness. It helped the students to focus their attention on the task at hand. Whether it was focusing on a glitter jar, a mandala, or on our feet planted firmly on the ground, an awareness of self was established and focus attained. Another mindfulness activity was belly breathing. During final relaxation, we placed our hands on our bellies and felt our hands rise and fall with our breath. These simple activities helped to center the children and calm their bodies and minds.

In yoga class, we learn the importance of taking care of ourselves, body, mind, and spirit, so we can be strong nd peaceful not only in school but out in the world.

Choice Based Art Parkside artists are empowered to create art based on their own ideas and learn how to be independent by setting up their own materials and cleaning up for themselves.

The Choice Based Art approach allows for students to act as real artists, expressing what they want through whatever medium they choose.

Each class begins with a 5-10 minute mini lesson focused either on a specific skill, medium or a project about an inspiring artist. Everyone is required to watch and learn, but after the lesson, artists plan what they will work on- either what they just saw or something else of their choosing, or perhaps something else inspired by the lesson. In addition to Choice Based art, students worked together to create large scale paintings as scenery for Arts Festival and the end of year play.

This year we also introduced a new medium and choice center into the art room, the 3Doodler Start 3D printing pen. In order to create something, students need to have patience, planning, spatial awareness and concentrated attention- skills that are essential for success in art as well as in all areas of life.

OUR MISSION IN ACTION

Music & Drama We encourage students to be good audience members as well as performers, to express themselves when it is their turn, to work well individually and in group settings, and to discover all the positive creative outlets that Music & Drama provide.

Around the World In Music & Drama, we take our students around the globe to discover and explore music, stories, traditions and culture from different countries.

Our Drama program aims to build a basic acting technique, sharpen storytelling skills, foster comprehension, and burnish social self-esteem.

Allowing children access to their imagination in a related environment helps with social emotional awareness by engaging with others through exercises that explore physical, vocal, and creative expression. We open each class with a body stretch, a vocal warm up, and then we progress into exercises that use the whole body as an instrument of expression, moving towards assembly presentations through the introduction of stories, songs and character work.

We try to bridge the gap between receptive and expressive language skills by working on listening, reacting, and understanding story structure.

Our Music program gives students performance skills in both solo and chorus settings using a variety of song literature. Besides learning various genres of songs, we introduce various classical pieces and discuss how music affects individual emotions and memory. Students learn to recognize and distinguish between the sounds of different instrument families. In class, students have opportunities to create sound effects and rhythmic accompaniment for songs and movements. Students are asked how each of the instrumental themes makes them feel, and they share their thoughts by using descriptive words as they listen to each of the characters and their corresponding instruments.

For the younger groups, we break down the ‘building blocks’ of performance in a step by step escalating program that lays the ground work for a performance setting.

For older students, their work throughout the year culminates in a year end performance onstage. In 2018, the students used the power of make-believe to bring “Mulan” to life in the school play.

Technology Universal Design for Learning The mission of the media and technology program is to support the overall mission of the Parkside School by providing teachers and students with tools to access skills and information through the use of technology.

Throughout the year, students engage with technology tools, including desktop computers and iPads, to enhance learning through the creation of multi-media presentations and digital artifacts. These digital creations are used to curate digital portfolios, allowing students to showcase what they are learning about in school as well as to reflect on their strengths and challenges in the classroom.

When we think about technology at Parkside, we use the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework. This framework guides the development of flexible learning environments that can accommodate a variety of learners with individual learning differences.

The goal of UDL is to create curriculum that provides multiple means of representation (how students acquire information and knowledge), multiple means of expression (how students show what they know), and multiple means of engagement (how we tap into learners’ interests, challenge them appropriately and motive them to learn).

This framework allows us to plan and execute lessons and projects that are individualized and interdisciplinary and teach to the whole child, which is a pillar of the mission of our school.

OUR MISSION IN ACTION

A Foundation of Literacy Bright and inviting, the Parkside School Library is alive each day with activity and learning. All grade levels have regularly-scheduled weekly class time. In addition, the library is available for book exchange at any time.

Library instruction is interdisciplinary to align with the school’s curriculum, creating a foundation of literacy that extends beyond the elementary years.

The older children become skilled in identifying and evaluating information while developing critical awareness and life-ready, problem-solving skills.

Our younger students find joy in the library by choosing books, listening to stories, exploring topics in great depth, and discovering new interests.

This year our Library Visiting Author/Illustrator Program featured Carol Levis, Selina Alko and Ruby Bridges. The children were delighted to meet these three empowering literary personalities about whom we had shared in Library class.

GRADUATION

Class of 2018 Graduates celebrated their achievements at a ceremony on June 19 held at the New York Society for Ethical Culture. The ceremony was highlighted by dynamic musical performances, moving speeches and countless words of encouragement from fellow students, friends, alumni and teachers.

Members of the graduating class are going on to schools including Aaron School, Fit Learning, The Lowell School, Summit School and York Preparatory School.

“Parkside helped build me into the person I am today and I would be nowhere without this school. Parents, you made a good choice by sending your kids to Parkside.

Probably one of the best choices you will ever make for them. They will be ok and will always have Parkside to fall back on. They will accomplish great things and be the best person they can be.

Being a kid with a learning difference is extremely hard, not just because you struggle with reading, writing, doing math, spelling, staying still, or whatever your disability is, but... because you are scared.

Parkside is a safe place where we were told that we can do anything we want if we put our minds to it, and that’s right, we can. But the world outside Parkside is going to try and tell us different. So parents, I ask you to please be patient with us. We are trying, but we are scared. Sometimes we are frustrated for what appears to be no reason. Sometimes we won’t be able to sit still. Doing our homework right after school may not work for us, and homework while watching TV may prove to be helpful. We have different ways of doing things, and that’s ok.”

The Parkside School community gathered on Thursday, November 16 at Arena to celebrate the school’s 30th anniversary. It was a night like no other, an 80s/90s themed dance party with raucous performances

by The Dance Cartel, remarks from Al Roker, and a moving video commemorating Parkside’s rich history.

More than 200 members of our community came together to raise funds for new outdoor play and learning spaces for our students.

The event raised more than $265,000 and enabled the construction of a new outdoor play terrace on the third floor.

PARENT ASSOCIATION

A Message from the PA The Parkside Parents Association (PA) serves as a conduit for parent involvement in the school.

Throughout the year, the PA organizes many various events, which serve a dual purpose of fundraising for the Annual Fund as well as student and parent fun.

Parents got involved this year in a myriad of ways. From being Class Reps, to biking at our Swerve spin event, to boogying down on the dance floor at the 30th Anniversary Benefit, parents took the opportunity to show up and show out for Parkside! A huge thank you to everyone who got involved over the past year!

Before the year even began, the PA put together a “family photo book,” which included names, ages, photos, and fun facts about every Parkside family. This was a great way to put names to faces, and to help us learn more about the people in our school community.

In September of 2017, we welcomed 12 new families to Parkside, hosting all of them at the New Parent Cocktail Party. New parents, parent buddies, Parkside staff, and the Board of Directors all enjoyed socializing at a lovely soiree hosted by Bindia Malhotra, mother of Simeon Chew ’18.

The PA was proud to support Parkside’s 30th Anniversary Benefit at Arena NYC in November.

Since Parkside was founded in 1986, it proved fitting that parents, alumni, staff, and friends came together for an 80s party! Dressed to the nines in 80s garb, we danced the night away. It was inspirational to see so many in our community come together to help raise funds for the school’s new outdoor play terrace.

Just two weeks later, the PA hosted our annual Book Fair at Book Culture, who donated 25% of all proceeds back to school. Over the 4 days of the fair, each class got to visit Book Culture and pick out their own books. The festivities included a fun cocktail party for parents, and, all in all, more than $1,770 was raised for Parkside and parents enhanced our classroom and library collections by purchasing a variety of new books for the school.

No rest for the weary! Just a week later, Parkside was transformed into a winter wonderland for the annual Holiday party. Students and their families enjoyed a magic show, arts and crafts projects, a photo booth, a tattoo artist, a face painter, and more! Everyone had a blast!

In early 2018, we worked off those holiday pounds at our 4th annual Swerve for Parkside spinning event. Through bike sales and raffle tickets, we raised $7,437 for Parkside. A special thanks to the Parkside teachers who showed us how it’s done!

In March, we hosted the Spring Auction once again at the Bryant Park Grill. Bidding was fast and furious on over 180 items, including fabulous artwork by the students that was the highlight of the live auction. The event grossed $101,260 in support of Parksides art and movement programs, which include music, drama, art, library, gym and yoga.

Other highlights of the spring were the New Parent breakfast and the Staff Appreciation Party.

The Parkside PA also worked throughout the year on various other initiatives, like coordinating parent volunteers, treats for monthly Parkside staff meetings, and two very well attended Dads’ events.

We thank everyone who played a role in the Parent Association’s success this year. We are proud to be part of such a caring community of parents.

“Denim & Diamonds” Spring Auction Support of our spring auction allows for our students to pursue learning in their areas of strength, to acquire tools and strategies to progress in their areas of challenge, and to develop respect and understanding for themselves and others.
