PreKindergarten Worm Walk This rainy spring created the perfect conditions for young scientists to locate Lumbricus terrestris on Park’s campus.

On a recent morning in May, children in Betsy Platt’s PreK class searched under rocks, leaves, and logs near the athletic fields. “Look, I think worms are over there because I see a robin eating one!” “I found three worms. I can share them with you.”

Grade 5 Immigration Immersion Fifth grade social studies is a yearlong study of immigration, focusing on Ellis Island, Angel Island, and modern day immigration.

Before Winter Break, the North Wing was transformed into Ellis Island, with young immigrants representing Jamaica, Italy, Barbados, Poland, Russia, and Ireland waiting for the 1905-era inspectors and officials to stamp their passports so they could begin a new life in America.

In the spring, students interviewed first generation immigrants in the Park community to learn about their unique immigration experiences. Small groups of students worked together to create a project honoring each immigrant's story. This Immigrant Journey Project is designed to provide fifth graders with an immersive experience to explore modern immigration stories within the Park community and then respectfully retell these journeys.

ARC at Park This annual end-of-year celebration for Upper Division students and their families showcased the arc of learning and was dedicated to the students’ Accomplishments, Reflections, and Creativity.

The program began in the West Gym, with students sharing brief anecdotes and fun memories. Then, the crowd dispersed to view the two projects that each sixth, seventh, and eighth grader had selected to share with the community.

The projects on display in various classrooms throughout the School represented hard work, deep thinking, and critical problem solving. The audience was asked to consider both the process and final product. Upper Division students displayed work that was both personal and creative and provided a special glimpse into the learning and growth that takes place at Park.

Park at Boston Pride In support of our commitment to equity and inclusion, the Park contingent at the Boston Pride parade— dozens of students, families, faculty, staff, friends and allies—marched down Boylston Street in support of LGBTQIA+ people. This is the fourth year that Park has participated in the Pride parade, which began in 1970, one year after the Stonewall riots. The 2019 parade also marked the 15th anniversary of gay marriage being legalized in Massachusetts, the first state in America to do so.

ON TUESDAY, MARCH 12, SEVEN MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 2019 VENTURED WAY OFF CAMPUS—7,286 MILES FROM GODDARD AVENUE TO SHANGHAI. LATER THAT WEEK, THEIR CLASSMATES TOOK OFF ON THEIR OWN TRIPS TO ROME (4,089 MILES), MÁLAGA (3,478 MILES), AND MARSEILLE (3,726 MILES). THESE STUDENTS WERE PARTICIPATING IN THE FIRST OVERSEAS CURRICULAR TRAVEL DESIGNED FOR PARK'S EIGHTH GRADERS.

ince Park’s first eighth and ninth grade trip to France in 1978, overseas travel has been an important feature of the language curriculum that directly reinforces the School’s mission. Head of School Scott Young clarifies, “A central component of Park’s mission is to educate students to be positive, contributing members of our diverse local and global community. Travel is the ultimate hands-on learning experience, providing sensory and cultural exposure that results in a deeper understanding of the world and one’s role in it. Experiential or ‘applied’ learning, like curricular travel, engages students in a deep and meaningful way by putting their knowledge and critical thinking skills to work in the real world.”

Liga Aldins, World Language Department Head, says with a broad smile. Liga has led more than 25 trips since the 90s, when language-based trips for ninth graders became the capstone of Park’s language program.

By 2013, students were traveling to France, Spain, Italy, and China, and students and parents both recall these trips as “the most important learning

opportunity of the ninth grade year.”

In 2016, as the Grade IX program drew to a close, the School began to examine and reimagine the role of travel within the educational arc of all Upper Division students. “We set out to create developmentally-appropriate challenges with regional, national, and international travel opportunities that would enhance the learning experience for all students in Grades VI, VII, and VIII, respectively,” Scott explains. The newly-envisioned travel program became a reality this fall when the sixth grade participated in a three-day camping trip to practice independence, build connections with one another, and experience outdoor learning. In March, seventh graders traveled to Washington D.C. as part of their yearlong study of American history. The trip to the Capitol was designed to deepen their understanding of our country’s history and identity, and develop the skills they need to become responsible participants in our democracy. Because these trips have been designed as essential to the curriculum, they are included in the cost of tuition.

International travel for eighth graders is designed to be a capstone

experience for the Upper Division program. For young language scholars, the opportunity to take their knowledge from three years of classroom practice and engage in conversation with native speakers is incredibly rewarding. On their trips to China, France, Italy, and Spain, students not only practice their language skills in an authentic setting, they experience a unique culture first-hand. “While we’ve been introducing cultural elements in our language classes since sixth grade,” Liga explains, “nothing compares to participating in activities and enjoying the cuisine to connect them with the people, history, and culture of each country.” Almost every student traveler connected with the local fare. Their journals and blogs are filled with detailed descriptions of dumplings, pain au chocolate, paella, and gelato.

By all accounts, the four trips were a huge success! This summer, the language faculty will review the itineraries and begin planning similar capstone experiences for spring 2020—all thanks to the eighth grade trail blazers of the Class of 2019!

I N A hanks to the careful planning of Park’s Mandarin teacher Mulian Chen, in collaboration with Smithsonian Student Adventures/Walking Tree Travel, Park students experienced ten wonderful, varied days in China. Mulian and the seven Mandarin students were joined by Alice Perera Lucey ’77 and Teaching Apprentice Katy Lee for their trip halfway around the globe. Upon arriving in Shanghai, the group visited the peaceful Confucius Temple, as well as the Urban Planning Museum in the growing city of skyscrapers and 26.3 million inhabitants. Then, they traveled on the bullet train (200+ km/h) to the smaller city of Hangzhou, home to Park’s partner school, Greentown Yuhua Qinqin School. Park students met their host families and settled into four nights in Chinese homes and days spent at the school. For a joint service project, Park and Qinqin students designed and painted a mural of the Boston and Hangzhou skylines. The Park delegation flew on to Chengdu, where they visited a rural village practicing organic farming techniques. An unforgettable highlight of the trip was a visit to the Chengdu Panda Sanctuary and having many conversations in Mandarin.

Others read stories and discussed favorite animals as well as animal sounds across different cultures. The students were so attentive and cute! In China, when students speak to the teacher, they always raise their hands and stand up to speak. That took some getting used to!

Our group stood in front of over 200 students, with hundreds more watching, and introduced ourselves in Chinese.

Afterwards, we asked questions in Mandarin and answered a few in English. Despite being a little intimidating, it was a great opportunity to test ourselves. After this, we challenged ourselves by joining in a first grade mandarin class. We listened in and were taught by our friends in first grade. Next we did Taekwondo. We learned 4 different moves that we were able to combine to one move. This required a lot of flexibility. Later, we went to music where we learned how to play “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” on the Chinese piano (Yangqin, Chinese dulcimer).

After eating everything from pork buns to egg tarts, we got on the bus and drove towards the Panda Sanctuary. We were given coverall suits and gloves and immediately were put to work cleaning the panda cages. We cleaned everything in the cages …and we mean everything! Then we each got to feed one of the pandas a carrot and a chunk of panda bread. To feed the panda, we knelt down in front of the panda and put the food towards his mouth. He took the food and ate it happily. The panda was adorable!

A LY atin students traveled to Rome, where they soaked up history, art, and architecture with visits to the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, the Vatican, and a truly memorable day trip to Pompeii! Thanks to her meticulous attention to detail, Latin teacher Janice So created a trip that proves that Latin is very much alive. To compliment their language study, the three students began an in depth investigation of Roman culture as part of their language classes. Each student was required to deliver two archaeological site presentations while in Italy (one in Rome and one in Pompeii). After choosing their topics, their research included building materials and methods, cultural and/or political significance, usage, and changes in the structures over time. They wrote their presentations back in Boston, and then spoke about them at the ancient sites of the Arch of Titus, the Pantheon, and the Stadium of Domitian in Rome, and the Stabian Baths, the Large Theater, and the Odeon Theater in Pompeii.

In addition to the archaeological sites, the students also read excerpts from Vergil’s Aeneid and Juvenal’s Satires in Latin while visiting places mentioned in the texts. Art teacher Nancy Popper introduced the group to Caravaggio and Michelangelo in her daily art history lessons when they visited the Vatican and other churches. On their last day in Rome, having enjoyed delicious Italian food (including daily stops for gelato!) for the week, they made their own pasta in a cooking class.

After reading these lines of the Aeneid in which the Tiber River speaks to Aeneas, we visited the river. The students were saddened to find so much litter around a river that had seemed so majestic and protective of refugees in the Aeneid. Their take away from this particular reading was the importance of stewarding the environment as well as historical sites.

orking with the experienced student travel organization, Global Works, Spanish teachers Kathy Come and Grace Cinquegrana planned a unique trip to Southern Spain for their 17 students. The Park contingent traveled to Spain by way of Dublin with chaperones Señoritas Come and Cinquegrana, as well as science teacher Heather Offen. From Málaga, they set off for their home base: the guest house at la Fundación Escuela de Solidaridad (FES), a unique nonprofit providing housing and services to migrants and poor families in Granada. FES residents hail from North Africa and Latin America, giving Park students first-hand experience with an international geopolitical crisis. In addition to meaningful service work in support of FES’s residents, students took a flamenco dance class and visited many Spanish landmarks, including the Alhambra. They learned more about Spain’s beautiful Moorish architecture in Córdoba and prepared delicious paella and gazpacho in Sevilla.

Our group worked on the mosaic, specifically the word “Fundación.” We mixed cement and broke colored tiles. . . .smashing tiles with hammers is very fun. In the late morning we had a refreshing snack of iced tea and fruit. We finished the letters F U N, and we were very productive on other letters, setting up tomorrow’s group to finish. Working on letters was a relaxing experience that enhanced our community and gave us time to chat.

After dinner, we took one last stroll through the streets of Málaga before heading back to our hotel, as we have to leave early in the morning for our flight to Dublin. Goodnight and ¡hasta mañana!

anting to create a unique, authentic experience for their 22 students, French teachers Liga Aldins and Awa Diop worked with Global Works, a student travel organization, to design a trip centered around homestays.

Liga and Awa, along with Assistant Athletic Director Dana Welshman-Studley ’85, served as chaperones for the visit to Southern France. Upon arriving in Marseille, the eighth graders traveled to Avignon, followed by Aix-en-Provence, where they visited Paul Cezanne’s art studio. Then, they traveled to the medieval walled city of Carcassonne to spend four nights with local families. Students had many opportunities to practice their language skills both with their hosts and with middle school students they met and connected with at a local French “collège.” One day, the Park contingent also performed community service clearing ancient paths which join the “Camino de Compostela,” the pilgrimage route to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain, so that future pilgrims and hikers can use them again.

When we went to Les Halles, my group was in charge of getting cheese.

There was an incredible selection of many different colorful cheeses.

We picked up some Comte, Emmental, Camembert, Crotins de chèvre and some Brie. The experience of the market reminded me of the Quincy market.

M A R C H 1 8 Tour of Paul Cezanne’s studio Explore city center and Pont du Gard (Roman aqueduct) We woke up early and walked 30 minutes to Paul Cezanne’s painting studio where we received a lecture (in French) on the history of the place itself, Cezanne, and his paintings….Since we had learned about Cezanne previously, it was a lot easier to understand the presentation. It was awesome to see something that we learned about come to life. I had studied the painting named “Les joueurs de cartes” (or The Card Players). I had presented on this topic in class, and seeing the women explaining the painting in French was satisfying for me to know that my research applied to the real world.

Everyone was kind of nervous….We all milled around awkwardly, talking about how nervous we were. Eventually, all of the families arrived and everyone started to leave. Avery and I went to the car with our host family. On our way to their house, we stopped at the market. It was similar to a grocery store in the US, except it had different brands. We drove to our house and we pulled into the gate. There was a dog waiting in the yard to greet us. There were also two cats and a turtle that we met later. After attempting to discuss music in French, we had a dinner of pasta with eggs along with some sausage and pâté. We showered and journaled before finally settling down to read and sleep.

The students welcomed us wholeheartedly. First we...asked them...what music they listened to and what sports we all played. [This] helped strengthen our French by forcing us to utilize our conversation abilities….and we learned a lot about the students we talked to….

After that, we went outside for recess and talked to many students. There was also an exchange of phone numbers between us and the French students. After recess, we went to lunch. Lunch was very interesting for us….[because] it is much longer! The cafeteria worked very much like one in the U.S., where students get their food in a line, then sit down and eat….Sadly, after 45 minutes, we had to leave, but the experience gave us a good look at what school was like for French kids.

Celebrating

368 years

at Park!

The Park School is celebrating the careers of eleven remarkable individuals who are leaving Park at the end of this school year. Each of these educators have been an integral part of the Park community for more than two decades—for a cumulative total of 368 years of service!

How lucky we have been to be the beneficiary of their wisdom, energy, thoughtfulness, and caring.

Like many in our school community, Liga has “grown up at Park.” Forty-two years ago, she began as a PreK teacher, working with the School’s youngest learners, the Class of 1988. Following a stretch in the Library and a position as a Secondary School Counselor, Liga rejoined her first students as a French teacher in the Upper Division. On the 4th floor, Liga has brought language alive to scores of French and Spanish students, opening their eyes to the wider world. When former students return to visit Park, they take pride in sharing their accomplishments, current interests, and plans for the future with their middle school language teacher. Her own children, Kristaps ’97 and Gints ’01, both attended and graduated from Park and join other alumni in expressing their gratitude for the foundation they received. Liga, who majored in French and studied in France during her college years, has always treasured introducing her own students to the cultures of Spain and France on the more than 25 eighth and ninth grade language trips that she has led. Over the years, Liga and her husband, Marty, have shared a love of music, and for many years, performed and toured many parts of the world, including their native Latvia, as members of the professional vocal/instrumental WORL D L A N G UAGES ensemble Kolibri. In retirement, they hope to spend part of the year in D E PA RTME N T H E AD Latvia visiting family and friends and enjoying the cultural life. Once 1977 she settles into her new routine, Liga will have time to learn another language...perhaps Italian, Mandarin, or Arabic! Bonne Chance!

For decades, Betsy Ball has greeted every visitor to the School (and answered every phone call) with the same warm welcome. Her remarkable service to the Park community began in 1954, when she taught the three- and four-year-olds in Nursery, and the slightly older children in Kindergarten. After teaching for 14 years, she left the classroom to raise her own children, Rob and David, who both graduated from Park with the Classes of 1983 and 1985, respectively. During those years, she became a stalwart parent volunteer, running the famous Clothing Sale and staffing the entrance to the Harvest Fair with her trademark smile. She was also a frequent helper at the Front Desk, stuffing the Park Parent into envelopes in the days when it was mailed home. Once both sons were in high school, Betsy assumed the essential job of running the Front Desk—greeting visitors, answering phones, delivering messages, and coordinating dozens of volunteers. From this vantage point, she has watched hundreds of students grow up, including her own great-neices, Eliza Perry ’12 and Sophie Perry ’14. With an unprecedented 65-year tenure, Betsy is looking forward to a welldeserved retirement. We do hope that she will visit often, and pause to admire the beautiful front entrance that honors her warm, welcoming presence.

In her first teaching position as an intern at Noble and Greenough School, Kathy befriended a wonderful librarian named Nancy Hurlbut, who suggested that she apply for a position teaching English at Park. A few months later, Kathy, who was on her honeymoon in Hawaii, got a call from Nancy’s husband, Bob. The diligent headmaster was finishing up an article for the Park Parent introducing all the new faculty, and he wanted to make sure he was spelling her married name correctly, as well as offering congratulations in person! Since 1986, Kathy has been an essential member of Park’s English Department, teaching students in Grades VI – IX. From 2007 to 2015, Kathy served as the English Department Head, helping to shape forward thinking goals for the writing curriculum and developing a continuum for the Upper DIvision literature program, as well as sharing her passion for poetry and language with students and colleagues. For the last four years, Kathy has mentored aspiring new teachers as Park’s Director of Teaching Apprentices, extending her love of listening, advising, and collaborating with young educators as they launch their careers. Next year, she will be the Director of Teaching and Learning at The Field School E N G LI SH T EAC H ER in Washington, DC. She’s looking forward to this new & DI RECTO R chapter, and to living near her children, Benj (Park OF T EAC HI NG A PPRENT I C ES Class of 2009 and Georgetown 2016), and Elsie ’13, who will be a senior at Georgetown next year.

For each of her 30 years at Park, Alison Connolly has shared her intellect, patience, and kindness with students and colleagues alike. With a master’s from Gallaudet University, Alison began her teaching career working with deaf students. When she was ready to change her focus to middle school math, Park was the incredibly lucky beneficiary. Throughout her time at Park, she has shared the beauty of parabolas and polynomials with students in Grades VI – IX, while serving as Math Department Head for 13 of those years. From 2004 – 09, she moved from the West Building to the 4th Floor of the Main Building to serve as the Upper Division Head, where she led the crafting of the TEACH block. Alison has loved getting to know students outside of the classroom—she has served as an advisor to sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth graders, chaperoned language trips to Spain and Italy, and roughed it in MAT H New Hampshire for eight years of Project Reason! As a SCUBA DEPA RTMEN T HEA D aficionado, retirement will provide Alison with more time to dive, 1989 read, and travel with her husband, Jim. Their daughters Caitlin ’98, and Brianna ’01, both Park School lifers, live nearby and Alison looks forward to spending more time with her grandchildren, including at Grandparents’ Day with Sophie who will be in PreK next year.

A steadfast New Yorker, Judy was in her second year teaching girls at The Chapin School when her husband, Steve, accepted a fellowship at MIT. Thus, Judy left Manhattan for Park’s bright, airy art studios and a campus full of grass, trees, girls, and boys! From her 4th floor perch (and an art studio annex in the North Wing), Judy has sparked creativity in many, many Park students, their families, and the faculty. She has particularly loved introducing first graders to art, inspiring hundreds of fifth grade papier mache animals , and working with ninth graders in an printmaking course.

In her 42 years at Park, (39 as the Department Head) Judy has mentored many aspiring art educators as well, including two current Park School art teachers! Over the years, Judy has taken off her smock to edit the student Anthology, serve on many faculty committees, and advise Upper Division students. When she says goodbye to Park this summer, Judy anticipates having more time to spend in her own studio, painting landscape watercolors. She’s looking forward to daily morning swims and donning her wetsuit for the oceans on both coasts. Judy and Steve, and their children Aaron ’04 and Anna ’09, are planning their next family adventure to Japan!

Dita first encountered Park while researching schools for her young sons, Nathan and Dakin. Dita, who was teaching PreK at the Village School in Milton, and her husband, Bunker, were very impressed with Park's way of helping all children learn.

Their sons enrolled as members of the Classes of 1998 and 2001, respectively, and the fall after Nathan ’98 graduated, Dita joined the faculty as a PreK teacher while Hilary Fabre was on leave. After a half year working at Park’s After-School Program, Dita became a Grade II teacher in 2000, then moved to Kindergarten for five years. During her sabbatical in 2011 – 12, Dita was enjoying a long bike ride when she suffered a devastating accident. She spent the next year recovering before returning to School as a Kindergarten Assistant Teacher in 2013. Since 2015, Dita has provided Grade I literacy support as the six- and seven-year-olds learn to decode the English language. In retirement, Dita looks forward to more time for her own reading, as well as baking, cooking, gardening, and helping various things thrive. Bunker, who retired in 2018, is eager to have Dita join him on all sorts of outdoor adventures: biking, walking, hiking mountains, swimming, rowing in shells, or sailing in Cotuit skiffs on the ocean waters. First stop, though, is a trip to Nathan’s farm in New York State (and their two grandchildren under age four) and more frequent visits with Dakin here in the Boston area.

Emily’s introduction to the Park community began in 1983 as a faculty spouse, when her husband Steve Kellogg came to head the Math and Computer Departments. In time, they became parents to Jeremy, Class of 1999, and Nathan, Class of 2002, bringing the total number of Park years for the Kellogg family to 77! As a parent, Emily logged countless hours on the Clothing Sale, Springfest, and as a Library Volunteer. In the fall of 1998, she began working at the Front Desk in the afternoons; four years later she moved upstairs to work in the Library. From her post at the circulation desk, Emily loves helping, faculty, and parents and especially students navigate the library and keeping the cadre of Library Volunteers busy reshelving books.

Emily, who is an avid collector—of seashells and sand from around the world, postage stamps, books, calligraphy pens, etc.—has shared her passions with the School by displaying many of her collections in the Library’s Cabinet of Curiosities. She brings her love of birds and the natural world into the Library each fall when she collects eggs and caterpillars (and many, many pounds of milkweed), to raise monarch butterflies. In retirement, Emily looks forward to adding to her collections by traveling to remote areas of the world in search of birds and shells. She is also planning frequent visits to Jeremy and Nathan, who are expecting their first children in May and July.

Jean Kendall had already been a Park parent for six years when School Nurse Julie Canniff called to ask if she’d be interested in working a few days each week. The part-time schedule appealed to Jean who had previously worked as a high-risk OB-GYN nurse at Brigham & Women’s Hospital. And, the timing was perfect—her twins, Isa and Sophie Moss ’09 were set to begin PreK that year, and her oldest daughter Anna Moss ’02 was in Grade VII. During her tenure, which corresponds to the rise of life-threatening allergies and asthma, the role of the school nurse has changed dramatically, growing from first aid station to dispensing lifesaving medication. In her 20-year occupancy of the Nursing Office, Jean has attended to a slew of third-grade boys with knee injuries from recess play, scores of jammed fingers during basketball season, and the occasional concussion, not to mention the five seventhgrade boys who dared each other to drink a bottle of Tabasco at lunchtime! Through it all she has dispensed love, bandaids, and a glacier worth of ice to hundreds of students. Come June, Jean looks forward to traveling off the beaten path and contributing her medical skills to the two major humanitarian SC H OOL N U R SE crises facing the United States at this time: immigration on the 1999 southern border and the opioid epidemic.

When Costa Rican native Miguel Morales joined the Park School community in 1998, the Morales name was already legend on Goddard Avenue. Miguel’s parents, Dolores and Domingo, had been on the Dining Services staff since 1984. Miguel began working outside—driving school buses and maintaining the School’s 34-acre campus, including the necessary but dreaded snow removal. Within three years, Miguel became the Grounds Supervisor, mowing and lining the fields, managing the pool which serves hundreds of families in the summer, and overseeing all the snow removal in the winter. Living on campus at Faulkner House with his wife, Patricia Delgado (who served on the Facilities Team from 2007 – 2019), Miguel was the emergency contact for any alarm or disturbance, especially off hours! In 2016, when Miguel became the School’s first Assistant Director of Facilities, his duties expanded to include maintaining the building’s complicated HVAC systems and managing maintenance for the School’s vehicles. Miguel has treasured every interaction with Park students, especially accompanying many seventh grade classes to Project Reason, and introducing eighth graders to his beloved country as part of the annual community service trip to Costa Rica. This February, with 20 seasons of snow removal behind him, Miguel hung up his snow shovel—and he and Patricia moved back to Costa Rica. They are enjoying La Pura Vida, riding bikes, and exploring their beautiful country!

Before taking up residence in the Lower Division, Susan Mahoney Segar had been teaching Kindergarten in Maine and Belmont, Massachusetts. After a year in Park’s PreK, Sue settled into a first grade classroom, where she remained for the next 17 years. That’s when she caught the eye of the new PreK teacher on the hallway below, and before long Sue married Andrew Segar (who served as Lower Division Head until his own retirement in 2015.) Sue regards the years their daughters, Lindsay Segar ’99 and Hilary Segar ’03, were at Park with fondness and appreciation, crediting Park faculty for bestowing on her children an extraordinary foundation, steadfast values, and love of learning. Since becoming the Lower Division Literary Specialist, Sue has worked with Park’s youngest learners to nurture and cultivate a love of reading in well over 1,500 five- to eight-year-olds! Beginning this summer, Sue will clear her calendar for twin granddaughters Lily and Samantha, wedding preparations for Hilary, and visits to and her vibrant 93-year-old dad who lives in Rhode Island. She’ll also squeeze in some time for reading, gardening, biking, and boating.

Pam’s 30-year run at Creative Arts at Park began innocently enough—with a visit to Director Kippy Dewey. Actually, Pam had already worked for five years as a counselor at CAAP when she stopped by with her two-month-old daughter. Kippy mentioned that the assistant was leaving and wondered if Pam might be interested in the job. Since saying ‘yes,’ Pam has kept Park’s wonderful arts program humming as the Administrative Director behind the scenes in the off season and actively juggling creative campers and counselors for five weeks every summer. Pam’s whole family has worked at CAAP—husband Howie in the music department and daughters Holly and Lydia teaching theatre and dance. Pam treasures the friendships made over the decades in Park’s loving, caring community and will spend one last summer on Goddard Ave. before she heads off to enjoy her well-deserved retirement. She is excited to not sit at a desk, and, in addition to singing and playing bass with Howie in their 50’s band, The Blue A D MI N I STRAT I VE Suede Boppers, Pam will be gardening, hiking, traveling, D I R ECTOR C REAT I VE learning Spanish, and doing yoga and dance.

I have loved every day and year of my teaching life and each and every class I was created.

My first day on the job, a gaggle of adventuresome seventh grade boys had entered a contest to see who could ingest the most Tabasco sauce. . . . Since that day, I can’t even count the number of “boo-boos” I’ve bandaged and tummy aches I’ve soothed. One of the chief joys of my job was having the chance to see my daughters grow up at Park. I will be forever grateful for the love, attention, and life lessons Park’s faculty and staff gave to my three daughters over the past 20+ years.

A Note About Park’s Class Year Designations Over Park’s 130-year history, the number of grades offered and the graduation year or final year have varied. The School had a Grade IX program for nearly 50 years (1967-2016) and, for all classes that graduated prior to 2016, we assigned our alumni a class year based on their Grade IX year. Therefore, all members of pre-2016 classes are listed by their Grade IX designation, whether or not there was a Grade IX during their time at Park. Also because we consider all former students at Park as bona fide alumni of the School, whether or not the student stayed through Grade IX. The Class of 2016 includes both the Grade VIII and Grade IX classes who graduated that year.

Beginning with the Class of 2017, Park began assigning a class year based on the Grade VIII year.

Barbara Tilden Lindeman, who turned 94 last year, reports that she is still living in Chatham to be near her children. She has four great grandchildren including twin boys born in February 2018, and two girls ages 18 months and 16 years. She enjoys them when they visit! We were thrilled to read a recent post on the Dana-Farber blog Insight that featured Ingersoll “Sandy” Cunningham! Sandy has spent the past 20 years volunteering at Dana-Farber, serving lunch to cancer patients. Thank you for your inspirational work, Sandy!

Doug Quine writes, “Since our (rescheduled) 50th reunion in 2015, my wife Maryclaire and I took an 11 day cruise to explore lovely Antarctica in November 2015. Later that year, I started a new career as a research scientist and research administrator at Veterans Affairs Connecticut Healthcare in West Haven. With our son, Alex, working in San Francisco as a senior programmer and our daughter, Victoria, working in Brattleboro, Vermont as a trapeze instructor, our family spans the country. Our 40th wedding anniversary is approaching on July 13th and we’re planning another big trip.

What has been happening with all my other Park classmates?”

Natalie Park Schutz Josephine Harding Brownback tells us that she is living happily with her golden retriever in San Francisco. She is still involved in Children’s Theater, a women’s group performing to over 7,000 public school students each year.

Bob Bray Peter Wetherbee writes that he is “living vicariously through his twin grandsons, one of whom is at Cornell and will be doing chemistry research in Germany this summer.

The other attends Georgetown, and has an internship at the State Department.” Posy Faulkner shares, “I am living a quiet life in New York after retiring from Cornell Medical School. I take a

big interest in politics, and music events in the city. I may move to Baltimore soon to be near my son while hopefully aging gracefully. I have seven grandchildren, ages 26 to 13, and all interesting. The Park School days seem very far away, but they were full of learning, fun, and happiness.” Jean Hughes shared there her life continues at Fox Hill in Westwood, and that she was planning to head to Florida this winter to visit her sister and a friend. She says hello to all of her Park classmates! She and Bob Kenerson saw each other this winter, when they were visiting a mutual friend. Bob has been practicing psychiatry for 50 years, and is still enjoying it without plans to retire.

He is still involved in committee work for the Massachusetts Psychiatry Society, and occasionally speaks at Harvard Medical School.

While his grandson, Jake, has dealt with health issues at Children’s Hospital, Bob has admired the fortitude of his daughter, Julie, and her husband. Bob enjoyed flying

Davis Rowley Heidi Ravven tells us that she is still teaching at Hamilton College­­—her 36th year! She writes, “my husband Eric Evan’s book of prose poems, Conversations with the Horizon, was published by Box Turtle Press this spring.” Heidi’s daughter, Simha, and her family Lucy (7) and Yael (3) and husband Tim live in Vermont, where she is now the chief medical officer of the Brattleboro Retreat and Vice President of the Vermont Medical Association.

Alumni Achievement Award Visit Bertha Coombs ’77 It was our distinct pleasure to welcome Bertha Coombs ’77 back to Park to receive the Alumni Achievement Award. During her visit in December, she spoke with students at Morning Meeting about her work as a NYC-based reporter for CNBC. After her presentation, Bertha spent time visiting Upper Division students in their Social Studies and Library classes. The highlight of the morning was a visit to Grade I, where Bertha practiced interviewing techniques with some of Park’s youngest reporters on a green screen! We’re grateful to Bertha for taking the time to share her work with us, and were proud to present her with this award.

Molly Butler Whitney writes: “I spend half my year on an island just west of Ft. Meyers and the other half on Buzzards Bay. I love to garden in both places­—it’s my passion! I have volunteered the last two years at the Mattapoisett Lands Trust and we are experimenting with a wildflower patch in one of their properties. Hopefully it will survive for all to enjoy!”

Mary Woodworth reports, “I have three children, ages 41, 39, and 37 and two granddaughters, 13 and 10. I’ve lived in Ohio for 39 years and keep myself occupied as a fine art printmaker belonging to a print cooperative in Columbus as well as one in Cincinnati. My husband Will and I have a home in both cities.”

Dan Finn tells us that he has been practicing law for the Commonwealth for the past 22 years as a civil trial attorney.

Classmate Holly Dando tells us that she is working hard as a clinician with traumatized veterans with the wonderful Headstrong Project.

She writes, “We have been opening new markets all over the country, the intakes are coming as fast as we can assign them. I have deepened my work with many new trainings, including Level II Internal Family Systems and one week studying the Polyvagal Theory at the Cape Cod Institute last July. This March, I went skiing in Montana because my childhood of frostbite in NH has been hooked on Western slopes…I think I’ll be spending a week in Wellfleet this summer; I’ll be on the lookout for Park friends.” Stephen Brodeur shared that he and Kevin McCarthy have been spending a lot of time fishing on the Cape together. From the photos they shared, it looks like they’ve had some great catches!

Lalla Carothers Sally Solomon Sally Solomon tells us that she, her husband David, and their sweet 13-year old doggie are still in Brookline, and still committed to the same professional work (Sally at Northeastern University in developmental academic advising,

Melissa Weintraub is still living in Oregon with a collection of pets— and the addition of a husband.

Melissa married Laurence Taoman in a small ceremony in her mother’s backyard in Newton. In the evening, Katie Bourne and her husband and mother attended the reception.

DJ Nash’s A Million Little Things on ABC Park extends a special congratulations to DJ Nash ’86, whose show A Million Little Things has been a big hit on ABC! The show, which premiered last September and was recently renewed for a second season, follows the lives of a group of friends as they try to make sense of a friend’s suicide. DJ, who was inspired to create the show after losing a friend to suicide, told online magazine Deadline Hollywood that the show is “an optimistic look at how the loss of a friend is the impetus for the other seven to finally start living, to make a promise to [their friend] and to themselves to finally be honest about what’s really going on.” Park readers and fans will be happy to learn that the show, although filmed in Vancouver, is set in Boston! The Bruins play an important role in the show, and DJ shared that the production crew did their best to create the TD Garden in Vancouver—much to the dismay of the Canucks!

DJ has had two other shows on the air, Growing Up Fisher, starring J.K. Simmons and inspired by DJ’s father who is visually impaired and Truth Be Told, also loosely based on DJ’s married life.

Congratulations on the success of this important show, DJ—we look forward to continuing to watch!

DJ Nash tells us that he is having a blast in Los Angeles, but misses his friends and family in Boston. He writes: “I think back fondly on all my time at Park. I LOVE YOU DAVID SATT! I am not afraid to say it in the Park Bulletin ’cause people need to know!”

Melissa and Laurence met four years ago at a NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) write-in in the local library and “continue the tradition of writing (or trying to finish) a 50,000-word novel in 30 days—it’s enjoyable!

I own a small freelance editing company, DoubleCheck Writing and Editing, LLC, and Laurence is in computers, as well as sculpting in his free time. We plan to add at least one dog to our menagerie.”

Christina Hartmann McCormick writes “No real exciting update from me except that Finlay started at Newton Country Day School this fall in the 6th grade and just missed overlapping with Madame Birket (French teacher extraordinaire!) by a year. She must’ve moved to NCDS from Park soon after we graduated—I stumbled upon her picture in a NCDS yearbook as we were sitting in the admissions waiting room. Seeing it brought back some hysterical memories of the French Exchange Trip Spring 1987! I hope this update finds everyone happy and healthy!”

Mary Sarah Baker Fairweather tells us that she is the director of MSPCA-Cape Cod—going on six years! Spike Anderson and his wife, Marita, live in Atlanta. He shares that his kids love that they can legitimately root for all Boston sports teams! He got to spend time with Nick Tarlov ’88, who is heading to Southern California to be a surfing doctor. Spike would love to see any fellow Park alumni in Atlanta! Annie Burton Lankford writes, “I’ve accepted (finally) my

call into ordained ministry in the United Methodist Church. I will be beginning my MDiv at Iliff School of Theology in Denver in the fall.

I am already living my calling through my assignment this spring as a lay supply pastor for Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Lonoke, Arkansas. I love preaching and teaching in this small community each week. I have made it through the process to be a Certified Candidate for Ordained Ministry in the Arkansas Conference of the United Methodist Church.

This means that a committee comprised of elders in the church has reviewed my credentials, my background, and my calling, and has interviewed me and found that my discernment is true. I will be a fourth generation Methodist minister. I am also loving my time as membership chair for the West Little Rock Rotary Club and will serve as the program chair next year; Rotary has been a wonderful and meaningful part of my life.

Jack and I are settling into married life with five children (18, 17, 16, 14 & 8) and enjoying our travels.

Beth, my eldest, is in her second semester at Ole Miss and acclimating to college life quite nicely. We really enjoy visiting her!”

Meg Lloyd Sarah Swettberg After 12 years of living, teaching, and coaching hockey in the Boston area, Meg Lloyd started teaching at Cardigan Mountain School in Canaan, New Hampshire. She and her 13-year-old dog Cooper relocated in August and Meg loves teaching 7th grade English and coaching hockey. Classmate Nyasha Borde Bovell has been working at Harvard since 2014, and tells us that she recently celebrated one year in her role as

the undergraduate and graduate program coordinator for the Philosophy Department. She writes, “I won the Dean’s Distinction Award last spring as well, ‘honoring Faculty of Arts and Sciences staff members whose contributions, citizenship, and skillful collaboration have delivered outstanding results.’ Non-work related, my husband and I are enjoying being newlyweds (we married in April 2017). Besides Midori Gleason I haven’t been in contact with many Park folks lately but have attended the last few September Clambakes.” Congratulations to Alex Whisnant, who opened a chocolate shop called gâté comme des filles in Union Square, Somerville. Alex shares, “we make fresh hand-dipped ganaches, chocolate mousse in cocoa waffle cones, and hot chocolate with whipped cream!

Alexandra Hammer Ducas writes, “My husband, Ben and I have just moved back to the US after nine years in London. While we had initially planned to move to Boston, our jobs brought us to New York.”

Congratulations to David Kehlenbeck who married Ginny Wortham in February in Richmond. David tells us that he is in his fourth year teaching high school Math at Collegiate School (which happens to be Ginny’s alma mater!) and is loving teaching and living in Richmond.

We recently learned that Scott Chaloff joined Seller Suarez Productions as head of development for television and film. Congratulations, Scott! And congratulations to classmate Chris Tierney who retired from the New England Revolution in November after an incredible 10-year career. Kate Haskell tells us that she is now living in Anacortes, Washington with her husband and two sons. At the end of September, she finished her ten-year commitment to the Navy on active duty, and is now a full-time mom, student (earning her MBA), and a Navy Reserve pilot.

Congratulations to Tenzin Thargay, who was awarded a 2019 Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Fellowship! The Rangel Fellowship will support Tenzin as he pursues a master’s degree. Upon completing the program, Tenzin will become a US diplomat. Eliza Thomas graduated from Carleton College in June of 2018 with a degree in geology, and now is living and working at the Cape Eleuthera Institute in the Bahamas, where she is conducting coral reef restoration research. After graduation, Eliza spent her third consecutive summer leading backpacking trips for Overland Summers, and hiked 210 miles in the Swiss Alps with a group of 12 very energetic (and awesome) teenagers. In addition to working on a congressional campaign this fall, she spent a lot of time back in Boston with her family, which was such a treat after being away from home for so long. She hopes everyone is doing well and looks forward to the next reunion! Congratulations to Michael Herring, Jr. who plays as a senior on the UVA Men’s Lacrosse Team! In May, UVA beat Yale to earn the NCAA final. Way to go!

Young Alumni Panel This spring, we had the privilege of welcoming back to Park some of our youngest alumni, who spoke with 8th graders and their parents about transitioning to secondary school. The alumni eloquently shared how they navigated their next schools and maintained their Park friendships. Corey Simpson ’05 Corey Simpson ’05 passed away on March 5, 2019 after a long illness. She attended Park from 1st through 9th grade, and is remembered fondly by her teachers for her wit, sense-of-self, and love of the English language. After Park, Corey went on to Phillips Academy Andover, where she cultivated her passions for the outdoors and adventure. While at Andover, and then at Boston University, Corey maintained many of her Park friendships, continuing to share her thoughtfulness and sense of humor with her former classmates. The Park Community is fortunate to have known Corey during her time at the School.

She will be deeply missed by her friends and teachers.

Park is proud to honor Nathan Kellogg ’02 as the recipient of this year’s Young Alumni Achievement Award.

A

s the director of personalized learning for ReNew Schools, a charter management organization, Nathan is reinventing education for 3,000 students in five urban schools in New Orleans. At ReNEW, Nathan leads all innovation and technology-related initiatives. In addition to his work with ReNEW, Nathan works with teachers across the city as the founder of New Orleans’ Personalized Learning Teacher Fellowship and a leader of NOLA EdTech Meetups and EdCampNOLA, among others. Outside of the city, Nathan also consults with schools and presents at conferences around the country on technology integration and equitable, student-centered school design.

Nathan graduated from Park in 2002 and went on to attend Phillips Academy Andover, where he received the Richard J. Phelps Friends of Andover Athletics Award and the Individual Achievement Award. He earned his BA at Bates College, and then his MEd in special education from George Mason University. After graduating, he worked as a special education teacher in the Washington, DC Public Schools. After moving to New Orleans in 2011, he taught at KIPP New Orleans and the Trinity Episcopal School before transitioning to his current role as a district leader.

Looking back on his experience at Park, Nathan notes two memories—of many—that influence his work in education today: Phil Gambone’s unrelenting passion for Asia inspired Nathan to transfer that passion to his own 8th grade social studies students, and David Perry’s unmasking of the myth that “Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492” has stuck

with him as he supports teachers in their design of equitable, justice-oriented classrooms. Overall, though, Nathan credits the collective supportive of so many educators (including his parents, Emily and Steve Kellogg), whose balance of rigor and compassion demonstrated what great teaching looks like.

In April, Nathan spent a special morning at Park, when he was on campus to receive this year’s Young Alumni Achievement Award. As the director of personalized learning for ReNew Schools, a charter management organization in New Orleans, Nathan leads innovation and technology-related initiatives. At Morning Meeting, he shared three important principles that he has carried with him since his time at Park— empathy, privilege, and hope. Nathan then joined his former PreK teacher, Hilary Fabre, to share a book with her class that was selected by none other than his mother (and Library Assistant) Emily Kellogg! Nathan also met with the technology team to learn more about recent innovations here at Park, participated in a Grade II robotics lesson, and was joined by some of his former teachers for lunch!
