On the banks of Boot Lake Thelens retire to new lake home

Pheasants, walleye, northern, moose, sailfish and bass adorn the walls. Jeanette has nicknamed it “The Dead Room.” “Everything’s dead in this room,” she said, chuckling. “And he’s got the best view of the lake.” Solid bronze statues atop the fireplace mantle were cast by Jeanette’s brother, Ray Wattenhofer, a local artist. The den hosts a mixture of wood – a red oak ceiling with ash, white oak paneling. “I like wood. It’s as good of wood as you can get,” Leonard said. The floor is a solid wood laminate that Leonard installed himself. Reclaimed and new hickory cabinets
Leonard and Jeanette Thelen have lived in the Park Rapids area their whole lives. Their new home overlooks the southern portion of Boot Lake. “I’ve always seen this point out here,” Leonard said, gesturing toward 225-foot shoreline. “I said, ‘Whenever it goes up for sale, that’s where we’re going to build a house,” Their previous home of 47 years was just a few miles to the east, built in a corner of Jeanette’s family pasture. Eventually, the lake property came up for sale and the Thelens jumped on it. hot tub. The Thelens introduce pine and popple paneling in the large gameroom. A second spare bedroom is dressed in pine. A sliding glass door leads to a cement patio and the lake. “We’ve got a wide open view right to the lake,” Leonard said. The sauna’s presence was a happy accident. Originally, the space was intended for a gun vault, but the sauna fit perfectly with a half-inch clearance. “We slid the sauna right in there,” Leonard said. “If I was Finnish, I’d be in there every night.” Geothermal heat pumps warm his old home, current home, shops and two-car garage. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), although the purchase and installation cost of a residential geothermal system is often higher than that of other heating and cooling systems, they can deliver more energy per unit consumed than conventional systems. The biggest benefit of GHPs is that they use 25 to 50 percent less electricity than conventional heating or cooling systems. Depending on factors such as climate, soil conditions, and system features,

The double-sided, cut fieldstone fireplace takes center stage in the Thelen home. Rather than using rounded stones, it’s flat-faced rock that has been diamond-cut to one-inch thickness. Burlingame Masonry built it “He’s an artist, the way he chisels and fits them all in,” Leonard said. “He spent many, many hours on it,” agreed Jeanette.

Darin Hafner is hoping area residents will be able to enjoy fresh cucumbers, greens and strawberries from his Park Rapids greenhouses even in the middle of winter. “When we get this going, they could come into our greenhouse to get their poinsettias for Christmas and pick some fresh strawberries at the same time,” he said. Hafner, who is the third generation owner of Hafner’s Greenhouse in Park Rapids, recently went on a tour of greenhouses in Holland to see how they grow tomatoes, cucumbers and strawberries all year. Hafner was invited on the all-expenses-paid tour by his greenhouse salesman. Sponsored by the Philips LED company in Amsterdam, the three-day tour included several greenhouses around Holland.
Hafner said his greenhouses are polycarbonate rather than glass, which means they have “a lot of light diffusion.” Compared to Minnesota, Holland’s climate is warmer because of being closer to the ocean. Their greenhouses are open all year with each 6-month growing season followed by some down-time for cleanup and planting the next crop. “Since we have some really cold winters, it’s hard to maintain a 72-degree temperature in the greenhouses, which you need for tomatoes to produce,” he said. “I can grow colder crops, like cucumbers and strawberries, also herbs and microgreens. I know there’s a need.” With two greenhouse and a total of 15,000 square feet, Darin Hafner he said he is looking forward to putting the plans in place to get this going. round for the bathtub in their master bathroom. The piece that they cut out became the surface of a breakfast-nook counter in the kitchen. In the downstairs guest bathroom, Smart found that exterior siding, turned sideways, becomes wall paneling. The laundry closet’s barn-door-like entrance was assembled from the same siding, plus painted pieces of the type of wood lath often used for mounting drywall on concrete-block walls. The doors roll on pulley blocks along a steel dowel, held between two metal bookcase ends mounted on the wall. A box built into the wall above the bathroom window was assembled from pieces of wooden molding. Curtains and window-blinds were made from leftover pieces of fabric. Some of the house’s decor came from clearance-bin purchases. The glass shelf above a bathroom tap was a gift. The fancy frame of an oval wall mirror was broken when it was given to the couple, and Smart repaired it. The couple picked up a large painting, originally priced at $400, for only $34 because it was chipped at one corner. Repurposed wood lines the bannister going up the stairs and a balcony overlooking the living room. Under the overhang of the bannister is an LED rope light, bought on sale for $8 and shining down on a hand-rail made from a metal closet hanger rod.
The Smarts winter some of their outdoor plants in the kitchen, while others line the windowsills of the chiropractic clinic next door. The orchid at right is more than 10 years old. Lining the balcony rail is the same laminate used to floor a nearby craft room; the material was gifted to the Smarts. Bought on clearance was another flooring material used for wainscoting. Spools of ribbon in the craft room are mounted on recycled pegboard. Art paints, many of which were rescued from being thrown away, are arranged on shelves made from old crates. The upstairs media room featured a unique two-tier couch made out of used mattresses.
Smart recycled or repurposed used twin-size mattresses, doors, scrap lumber, wooden boxes, eggcrate foam and upholstery fabric to create this two-tier reclining sofa for his home theater. The sofa arms have built-in cup holders made with clear plastic planters, lit from below with blue LEDs. Smart picked them up for free at a furniture store, where customers leave their old bedding when they buy new beds. “They throw them away because they can’t resell them,” said Smart, before explaining how he cleaned the old mattresses for reuse. After leaving the mattresses outside for a while, he rubbed them with diatomaceous earth to kill bugs, vacuumed them, steamcleaned them and sprayed them with Lysol. Wooden boxes and boards hold the mattresses up, and old doors (reinforced a little at the ends) support the upper end of each tier. The couch backs were made with egg-crate foam, store-bought fabric, and furniture nails leftover from another project. The armrests came from bookshelves, with cupholders in the armrests made from 49-cent clear plastic plant pots backlit by LEDs. Smart’s home office has a wall-mounted shelf created by cutting the decorative top off a bookcase and turning it so that the back of the shelf became the bottom. Some windows that used to be in the clinic now look out of the couple’s garage. “Much of the paint that we utilized for the walls was either ‘oops’ paint,” said Smart, or it came from a paint business’ overstock. He scored some of his supplies and specialized work from his patients; other materials came from acquaintances who had scraps leftover from their own remodeling projects. “They’re going to be throwing it and you might as well utilize it,” said Smart. “What we did in many cases was – like in the case of the downstairs bathroom – we mixed three different colors together to get enough to paint it and then save some for touch-ups.” His suggestions to those looking for decorating supplies or for repurposing ideas are to search social media, like Pinterest, and to watch home-improvement programs on television. As for what led the Smarts to live a “repur-

pose-driven” life, T. J. said, “I’ve been kind of crafty, and my wife is crazy good with decorative ideas. Repurposing has kind of become a passion.” Smart said he used to work in construction, and has always liked working with his hands, “which is probably why I’m a chiropractor.” The repurposing project has already extended to appropriating materials earmarked for one purpose and using them for another. For example, a pole that was going to support a chandelier became a behind-the-couch charging station with space to stash rolled-up blankets and a table lamp. The couple built their house in a time crunch, after their previous home sold after being on the market for two days. “They wanted to move in, like, yesterday,” said Smart. “We were living in that office space where the doctor used to be.” They brought in professionals to build the frame and exterior of the house and to do the painting and texturing, which Smart doesn’t like doing. Much of the rest, including flooring and sheetrock, they did themselves. “It’s been a long process, and we’re still doing it,” he said, adding that it’s a smaller house than their previous two homes. At one point they were taking care of their own home, his parents’ house, and the office and it got to be too much. “We felt we needed to downsize,” he said. “We weren’t getting younger. That’s when we felt we might move into town and add on here. The timing seemed right.” Smart still plans to develop some green space around the new house, with access from his office at the clinic. He continues to collect bits and scraps that he plans to use around the house. “I will admit I’ve picked stuff at the dump when I’m throwing something away. When I see stuff there and I think, ‘I could probably use this’ - I think I could blame my father for that. He made it through the Depression, when they saved everything.” Nonetheless, Smart said, “It wasn’t strictly about spending money, though we were trying to do that as well. Pinch pennies here and then get a fancier shower, get a jacuzzi tub, get nicer appliances, whatever. Partly it’s to make the space our own. Plus, it’s kind of fun, and helping the environment is not a bad plan.”

Experts share advice for first-time homebuyers

Book offers inspiration for camps, cottages and cabins
By John Hageman Forum News Service Buying a home for the first time can be an overwhelming experience, but experts in the field say there are some things prospective homebuyers can do to ease those headaches. Roseann Lund, senior vice president of a mortgage lender, said first-time homebuyers should get prequalified or preapproved for a mortgage. That helps ensure that “we’re looking at homes that are in the right price range for what they can do so they don’t fall in love with something that’s not attainable,” said Becky Aadnes, a real estate agent. Lund said it’s a misconception that homebuyers need a large down payment. While Zillow referred to 20 percent as the “ideal” amount to put down, she said that’s a standard figure to avoid paying mortgage default insurance but ends up being “a lot of down payment” in today’s prices. “There are other options that we have for customers where we can help them still get into a home rather than waiting for that 20 percent down,” Lund said. “They may not have enough disposable income to save that up in a realistic time to get into a home.” Aadnes stressed the importance of shopping around for different mortgage lenders and said homebuyers should find a real estate agent they’re comfortable with to guide them through what can be a stressful process. Moreover, Aadnes advised people to avoid making any big purchases right before buying a home and to improve their credit score. “I don’t know that people realize that they can save money by improving their credit,” she said. Julie Gugin, executive director of the Minnesota Homeownership Center, emphasized patience. She said prospective homebuyers should take some time to improve their credit and save money to make a “smooth transition” to homeownership. “We also like to say to people too that this might not be a 30-day process, but it doesn’t mean that it’s not ever going to happen,” she said. “It might be six months to a year before you’re ready.”

Modern advances in material creation and construction techniques mean that, even today, this age-old structure can continue to evolve to meet the needs, functions and desires of the American family. Mulfinger is a Minnesota architect who has designed more than 100 cabins all over North America. Principal emeritus of SALA Architects, he teaches a class on cabin design at the University of Minnesota School of Architecture. He is a fellow of the American Institute of Architects and the author of five books, including the best-selling “The Cabin,”” Back to the Cabin” and “Cabinology: A Handbook to Your Private Hideaway,” all published by The Taunton Press. He’ll be reading from his latest book at noon June 25 at the Brainerd Public Library.

Avoid doing the same task for more than 30 minutes. Take regular breaks. Actually sit on your garden bench. Garden from a chair or kneeling stool. Invest in a good pair of gloves. Use sun block, hat and gloves. Wear a carpenter’s apron. When using your muscles – think big. Use the larger stronger joints and muscles of arms or shoulders for carrying. Carry items on forearms rather than using hands to grasp. Hold items close to your body. Use palms instead of fingers to push or pull. Avoid doing any activities that require gripping for long periods of time. Maintain good posture at all times. Remember what your mom told you: “sit up straight!” Garden techniques can reduce gardening efforts. Use mulch to reduce weeding and watering. Install drip irrigation or soaker hoses in garden beds and containers. If bending or kneeling is difficult, than bring the garden up to you. Use containers on wheels, window boxes, hanging baskets, trellises or raised beds. Select the right tools for the job: Use ergonomic tools that have long or extendable handles. Widen the tool handles with foam tubing. Use a wheeled chair or “scoot seat” designed for garden use. Use a cart with big wheels. Load the weight over the wheel base so lifting is reduced. Use wheelbarrows for only light weight loads. Always keep your tools sharp.

According to the National Gardening Association, two out of three gardeners are over age 45 – which means that joint pain and arthritis symptoms may make it harder for many of us to enjoy this hobby. You may think you will need to give up gardening because of joint pain and arthritis symptoms, but what you need is a better approach to gardening. These smart strategies can help prevent arthritis symptoms while you’re having fun and getting your hands dirty: Go electric. Buy gardening tools with bigger handles. Drink plenty of water. Enlist a garden buddy. Change your routine. Use knee pads. Avoid overhead work. Respect your body. Gardening is good for all of us, mentally and physically. All muscle groups can be used while gardening, and more strenuous garden activities can even be aerobic and build muscle. Hand dexterity is improved. Gardening lessens the chance of a stroke, heart disease and reduces stress. Gardeners have less of a chance of being obese and their mood is improved by this hobby. An hour a day in your garden burns up to 400 calories. There are many other benefits from gardening, including delicious home grown vegetables. Gardening can also help maintain joint flexibility and range of motion; it’s “use it or lose it.” Here are a few tips to help garden smarter, not harder: Start slowly. Just like any new workout program, begin with small steps. Do stretches before, during and after. Use the right and left hands equally. When raking or shoveling,

What to look for on plant descriptions Growing Together BY DON KINZLER Columnist My wife, Mary, and I enjoy road trips with our family. In locations where the maps and GPS fail us, Mary usually suggests I just stop and ask directions. But I’d rather drive blindly up and down streets, preferring almost anything to the dreaded stop for directions. That’s why I like buying plants. Instead of making us ask for directions, well-marked plants come with information-filled tags, labels or catalog descriptions. Sometimes there’s much verbiage about how wonderful the plant is, but there’s valuable specific information contained on labels or in descriptions. Look for the following key points.
Shrubs Search for your proper hardiness zone, either 3 or 4 in North Dakota and Minnesota. Note the mature width, and allow the shrub this full footprint of space, as overcrowding is a common planting mistake. Height mistakes are less common than width mistakes but check mature height to avoid blocking windows or other elements as the plant grows. Look for the botanical name, often listed
in small print, that gives the plant’s genus and species. This is an important link for researching more information. The shrub’s preference for sun or shade is usually listed.
Trees Note the height of the tree to determine if it’s a large shade tree or a small decorative or screening tree so it can be located appropriately. Check hardiness zones. Look for specific traits, such as ‘prefers moist sites,’ or ‘tolerates drought.’
Perennial flowers Search for recommended light exposure, whether full sun, shade or part shade, as perennials bloom best when we plant them in their preferred light location. Check hardiness zones, and if we’re on the border of the recommended zone, the perennial will benefit from a protective winter mulch, or is best planted in a sheltered location. Look for keywords ‘disease resistant’ on types that are troubled with foliage diseases, such as monarda and tall phlox.
Annual flowers Height data is important to avoid hiding low-growing annuals behind tall, large types. Because annuals are often planted in groups, preferred spacing between plants is usually listed on tags. Observe light requirements to locate sun-loving and shade-requiring types in the

proper spots.
Vegetables Days to maturity are listed in seed catalogs and on plant tags. Close observation is especially important for tomatoes, watermelon, cantaloupe and honeydew melons. For tomatoes, early types are listed as 45 to 65 days, main season types as 65 to 78 days, and late types as 80 to 110 days from date of transplanting to garden. Melons that require 90 or more days usually ripen in mid-September. Choosing a less-lengthy cultivar hastens harvest by a week or two. Days to maturity are very weather-dependent. Check descriptions for disease resistance, especially tomato types.
Fruit trees and shrubs Hardiness zone data is vital for fruit selection to avoid planting non-adapted types. Search whether the type is self-fruitful, or whether two different cultivars are required. Check fruit tree height for keywords like dwarf or semi-dwarf. Strawberry descriptions list June-bearing, everbearing or day-neutral (often now included with everbearing types). Raspberry types differ between everbearing (also called fall-bearing) and summer-bearing. How LEDs allow homeowners flexibility in their homes April Knutson Forum News Service
“LEDs are a different technology than incandescent, which is the first generation of light bulbs and what the everyday person usually thinks of as light bulbs,” he says. One reason for the switch, Stachowski says, is due to LEDs’ energy efficiency, as it uses gas to emit light. “It saves more energy than any other form of light because it limits the amount of heat it produces which is considered an energy loss,” he says. Stachowski describes LEDs as “a more pristine light.” “LED lights give you a variety of flexibility in what color temperature you prefer. Some people prefer something more like daylight and some people prefer a more brilliant white which almost has a blue hue to it,” he says. With an incandescent light bulb – which uses a filament of tungsten wire inside to conduct electricity and emit light – the effect is very close to sunlight. But Stachowski says LEDs allow the flexibility for picking any color in the spectrum to view your surroundings in. Often Stachowski says homeowners are choosing a LED light unit or bulb when it’s the main light source for the room. It’s long lifespan also makes it attractive for installation in hard-to-access locations like a high ceiling in a hallway. According to Lightbulbsetc.com, many LED light bulbs are designed to last 50,000 hours (more than five years) compared to 1,000 to 2,000 hours for incandescents.
During these long winter months, Midwesterners tend to spend long hours in their home, soaking up the light when they flip on a switch instead of sprawling out under the sun’s warm rays. Like the sun, interior lights are expected to shine bright without thought. But to simulate sunlight in each room of the home depends much more on the type of light bulb in order to produce the desired effect for the homeowner. “There is no such thing as too much light,” says Jason Stachowski, co-owner of Limewire Electric. “As electricians, we really hate to see any shadows in the home.” Stachowski says he speaks with homeowners about the type of light they want. “The color temperature is measured in Kelvins and the lower the Kelvin number, the more yellow the light,” Stachowski explains. “Typically, I’ve seen about 2,500 Kelvin all the way up to 6,500 Kelvin with the lower the number being a yellow (hue) and the higher number being blue.” Stachowski says his company’s baseline installation is 3,000 Kelvins. “Lights that emit 3,000 Kelvins accomplish 95 percent of all task lighting for the average homeowner,” he says. In recent years, Stachowski says homeowners have been switching to light emitting diode (LED) bulbs and fixtures.

Shopping for LEDS When considering upgrading your light fixtures or bulbs to LEDs, Stachowski says there are some guidelines to follow. “When these LED light bulbs were brand new about 15 years ago, they were out of the reach for the everyday homeowner. Now that they have more competition in the market, that has driven down costs while still maintaining high standards on warranty, reliability and value in general,” he says. Don’t just buy the lowest price option. Stachowski says homeowners can run into issues when they pick up the best bargain because often this will mean a shorter overall life. Before purchasing, look at the lighting facts on the back of the box which will display lumens, expected life and energy usages. Look for lumens instead of watts. The terms are changing for bulbs when it comes to LEDs. Most often, LED packaging will list lumens, the unit measurement that explains how bright a bulb will be. (The more lumens, the more white light it will emit.) Estimate the desired brightness. For different spaces, you may require a different level of light. New LED lights are available in “cool” white light (around 2,700 Kelvins) and “warm” light (4,100 Kelvins), commonly used for accent rather overall lighting.

Choosing ‘light’ for each room Stachowski says although all homeowners have different preferences, most are looking to choose light fixtures or bulbs that mimic sunlight, with options to dim or shut out light completely in the bedroom. “That’s still the more common practice – to keep the lighting as close to sunlight as possible because, as humans, that’s all we’ve known,” he says. When deciding on light bulbs and fixtures or updating an existing light, Stachowski recommends considering different aspects, depending on the room. Kitchen: “In kitchens, you want to ensure you have as much light as you can have and this sometimes includes under-cabinet LED lighting,” he says. Adequate lighting is especially important in this room where homeowners are cooking, using knives and spending a good amount time every day in the space. Great or living room: In this room, most would want the option to have a “warm white color,” Stachowski says. Often, this room can include a focal point like a large LED chandelier, but this isn’t always the case as some prefer a more subtle features. “The lights we install can work in a ‘smart home,’ which is becoming a popular option,” Stachowski says. “In a ‘smart home,’ you can use your phone to turn on, off and dim the lights.” Whenever deciding to upgrade the entire a light fixture, it’s best consult an electrician. Bedroom: “In the bedroom, depending on the mood as far as the color spectrum is concerned, it’s still around that 3,000 Kelvin,” Stachowski says. Light and sleep Nurse Practitioner Heidi Saarinen at Sanford’s Sleep Center says those who have trouble waking up can purchase wake up alarm clocks which emit light. These “wake-up lights” can be purchased in-store and on Amazon, but Saarinen recommends consulting a doctor if you are seeking ways to improve your sleep cycle. “You should give your body two weeks to adjust with any changes to your sleep cycle,” she says.
