POGATSHNIKS CRAFT RETIREMENT HOME h s i l y st
By Shannon Geisen sgeisen@ parkrapidsenterprise.com Through careful planning, Rick and Jean Pogatshnik have created efficient living space without sacrificing comfort. “East Crooked is just over the hill,” Rick said, noting they had a beautiful, two-story log cabin there which they sold to build their retirement home over the course of 13 months. It wasn’t difficult to navigate the stairs yet, he said, but you have to consider making adjustments as you get older. “We’d like to stay in our home as long as we could, so we just went to a one level,” he said of the new abode. The two-bedroom home and two-stall garage was completed in the fall of 2019. It’s set on about 10 wooded acres, a mix of quaking aspen, birch, white pine and oak. Jean said they picked out a home design, then tweaked it to fit their needs. Gartner-Johnson Construction was the contractor. Kitchen, dining room and living room flow into each other, which is a popular trend, according to Rick. “You can talk with everybody when you’re visiting,” added Jean.
