One of the main reasons that residents call Parkland home is our perennial A-Rated schools. Recently, there has been many questions posed by current homeowners and potential residents in regards to the possible rezoning of our schools. We are lucky to have some of the finest public schools at all levels – elementary, middle and high school in the State of Florida right in our backyard to educate our children.

Although nothing is official yet, the School Board of Broward County is considering approximately 10 different boundary proposals that was discussed at the boundary meeting held on October 26, 2016 at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School. This is an issue that should be near and dear to all Parkland residents, as this could affect all of you.

It is our understanding that a final decision will be made on this issue sometime during March of 2017. As of now, the great news is that no child will be rezoned to a public school out of the City of Parkland.

Notwithstanding the valiant fight by our local leaders, the County left Parkland and its residents in a quandary – possibly not enough school space for the increased number of children living here now and into the future.

Parkland is a growing city and for years, residents have been excited about the new construction communities and the expansion of the city. Of course, with that growth comes the need for the construction of additional public schools and/or modifications to what is already here. In 2008, when additional new construction communities were being considered, the City of Parkland anticipated building at least one new elementary and one new middle school to help account for the additional children needing this resource. As such, builders of these new communities were required to pay impact fees to the County to help assist with any “growing pains.” The County received approximately $16.8 million dollars in impact fees! Despite the best efforts by the Parkland Commissioners to have the County use these monies to build the new schools, instead the money was used to pay down existing county debt.

This issue deserves your attention. Whether you have children in a Parkland public school or not, this zoning decision may affect property values. Many potential solutions have been proposed and more will certainly be coming in the future. Due to the hard work of our Mayor and the current Parkland City Commissioners, positive action was already approved including the construction of a twenty-four (24) classroom addition to Riverglades Elementary School. In addition, three (3) stand-alone modulars will be constructed at Park Trails Elementary School and three (3) stand-alone modulars will be built at Heron Heights Elementary School. These projects alone will provide Parkland with 600 more classroom seats for our elementary school children. SQUAWK TALK What a year so far! In 2016, we have seen a tremendous growth and appreciation from start to finish. From the 1st quarter through the 3rd quarter of the year alone, there was a 9% increase in home values in Parkland. Interestingly, and despite the increase in average sales prices, homes stayed on the market a little longer than they did last year.

We believe the reason for this was due to competition between Parkland’s new construction inventory and resales. The influx of new construction opportunities provided potential buyers with a larger inventory to choose from.
