FRANCIS PARKER SCHOOL REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY 2021-2022

THANK YOU FOR ADVANCING OUR MISSION.

2021-2022 REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY 1

Momentum doesn’t happen by default or chance. It starts with vision and purpose. We are propelled by the vision that our students can and do make a meaningful difference in the world. We believe our purpose is to create joyful learning every day, amplifying that spark of curiosity and determination in every student. We are able to put the right actions into motion because of your philanthropy. Philanthropy is the difference between good schools and great schools. Francis Parker School is an exceptional school. We take the responsibility to steward your philanthropic support seriously. It is a privilege to call you a donor. Thank you for your partnership and trust in our work.

ABOUT THE REPORT

ABOUT THE DESIGN

The artistic theme reflected in the Report on Philanthropy is uniquely rendered to capture a point of symbolism significant to Parker.

The word “marble,” derived from the Greek marmaros meaning “shining stone”, symbolizes the main concept. The pandemic has made it a challenging two years, dare we say “hard” like a stone. And during those challenging, hard, and sometimes dark days of the pandemic, we thought of your philanthropy as a soft light of hope and promise shining on the School and guiding our way. We also see the kinetic energy of a marble, created in movement, symbolizing the momentum that propelled us to continue to press forward knowing we will prevail. Throughout the Report on Philanthropy, you will see images that depict a collection of marbles resting inside and outside the quatrefoil logo. The conclusion of the Report, when in the final image the dividers have been removed and all the marbles are joined together, symbolizes the collective energy, the brilliance of light, and harmonious melding of your support; thus, the power of collective philanthropy.

This year’s artist theme, design, and construction was by the talented David Von Behren, Parker grandparent and parent of alumni. This is his second Report on Philanthropy design.

We thank our donors for their generosity and are honored to list them in the 2021 2022 Report on Philanthropy. Francis Parker School is supported by families who understand that their giving makes a Parker education possible for every student. Tuition alone does not cover the full cost of a Parker education; it is our strong endowment and families who make annual gifts that advance our mission. We have made every effort to ensure the accuracy of this report. Donors recognized in the Annual Giving and Donors by Constituency sections made gifts between July 1, 2021, and June 30, 2022, in support of Parker’s endowment, current-use operating needs, and capital projects. The Anonymous listing, which may recognize multiple people, has been removed from the Annual Giving and Donors by Constituency sections. Throughout the report, deceased donors are noted with an asterisk (*). If you have questions about your donor recognition or would like more information about giving opportunities, please contact the Assistant Head of School for External Relations Shara Freeman Hoefel at shoefel@francisparker.org or 858/569 7900. IMPACT

DONORS HAVE A TREMENDOUS IMPACT ON THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE AT PARKER. WE ASKED SOME OF OUR LOYAL DONORS TO SHARE WHY THEY GIVE TO OUR SCHOOL.

My earliest foundations as a scholar and a lifelong desire to learn were cultivated in my K-12 experiences at Parker. I have always appreciated the opportunities afforded me as a result of this education. I have followed the growth of Parker over the years and feel financial contributions to this institution to be a worthy investment to future generations.

To support Parker is to give back to the community that defined me as a person. MARYFORSYTHLOCOCO’60

JIMMY AND JENNIFER ANKLESARIA

The Anklesaria family has been part of the Parker community since 1997. Our three children have gone on to successful careers and we have made lifelong friends within our Parker family. We are grateful for the opportunity to support a truly exceptional school.

2021-2022 REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY 75

MARY ONG-DEAN

We share the single most important value of generations of Francis Parker families: the value of giving. GORDON AND MARLA GERSON

Colin and I give to Parker because we appreciate what Parker has given to our family. The Parker community has given me a professional space to do what I love and to share it with my students, hoping that their future work will validate all that we learn together. Parker has also provided a priceless education for our daughter and some life-long friends. We also give because we value the effort to make a Parker education accessible to students of diverse socio-economic backgrounds all over San Diego County and beyond.

76 FRANCIS PARKER SCHOOL

Parker could easily rest on its laurels and keep humming along. But we support Parker because the School is not content to take that easy path. We are confident that Parker is focused on doing the right thing for the students even if the path might seem bumpy at times.

YOUR SUPPORT Annual giving provides Parker with critical resources—a steady stream of funds that keep the School moving forward. Your philanthropic support helps us to cover most of the $3,600-per-student difference between the actual cost of a Parker education and what is covered by tuition. Annual gifts ensure that the Parker experience is both distinctive and accessible. While families have children attending Parker, we ask them to place the School among their philanthropic priorities, but broader-based support is important, too. Prospective families and grant-making foundations look favorably upon high giving participation from across the community because it demonstrates far-reaching confidence in the School and our mission. During this giving season, which runs through June 30, 2023, you will have many opportunities to proudly support the School. You can take advantage of current tax-year benefits by making a contribution by Dec. 31, 2022. Unlike tuition, gifts to support Parker are fully Wetax-deductible.thankyou in advance for your philanthropic investment. The collective power of everyone’s support advance’s the mission as far as the mind can see.

DAVID GRAY AND SARAH WHITE I give to Parker because of the impact it has had on me and my family. The best way I can thank the School for that impact is to participate in the annual giving campaign every year. Parker depends upon the consistent giving of our long term community members, and giving consistently is something I can do!

BOB OGLE ’89 I am the parent of two Parker Lifers. I started giving to Parker in the early eighties as I realized the value of the excellent education they were receiving. I continue to give as a tribute to my children and for the students of the future.

CAROL JENSEN My continued support of Parker is a way for me to show my appreciation for the privilege of being on the staff for more than 40 years as well as having the benefit of being a Parker Lifer parent.
