FRANCIS PARKER SCHOOL REPORT ON PHILANTHROPY 2018 - 2019

FOREVER

THANK YOU Each year, your giving inspires us. It drives us to act on our strategic initiatives, and it reminds us that fulfilling our mission and vision requires more than tuition alone. At Parker, we have a responsibility to elevate the student experience, and your philanthropy is a testament to that responsibility. Together, we make a collective investment in each generation of Parker students, who in turn make the world a better place. We consider it an honor and privilege to steward your gifts. That is why we set out each year to earn your loyalty and to truly merit your contributions. Thank you for your partnership in this important work. We cannot do it without you.

ABOUT THE COVER Each year, a Report on Philanthropy cover is designed to honor Parker, and the pages are dedicated to the donors who ensure that we live our mission. This year, we celebrate Parker icons. The icons are showcased in the Forever Stamp format to symbolize their timeless nature in our hearts and minds and to recognize that your relationship with the School and its people never expires.

ABOUT THE REPORT We thank our donors for their generosity and are honored to list them in the 2018-2019 Report on Philanthropy. Francis Parker School is supported by families who understand that their giving ensures Parker is able to provide every student with the best education possible. Every gift enhances the breadth, depth, and scope of the Parker educational program and each student’s individual academic journey. Tuition alone does not cover the full cost of a Parker education; we ask every Parker community member to support our School by making a gift of which they are proud. We have made every effort to ensure the accuracy of this report. Donors recognized in the Annual Giving section made gifts between July 1, 2018, and June 30, 2019, in support of Parker’s endowment and current-use operating needs. Throughout the report, deceased donors are noted with an asterisk (*), the Anonymous name listing may recognize multiple people, and graphed data values are rounded. If you have questions about your donor recognition or would like more information about giving opportunities, please contact Shara Freeman Hoefel, Head of Advancement, at 858 / 569-7900. For information, visit francisparker.org/giving.

FOREVER FOREVER

Parker adopted the Lancer name in the late 1960s around the time when the School expanded its offering to once again include high school and purchased the land where the Linda Vista Campus now sits. A symbol of strength and honor, the Lancer represents Parker pride and School spirit across our community. In 2017 the Lancer logo was reimagined, and “Lance,” the School’s mascot, first appeared on Campus.

UNIQUE GIFTS Unique gifts are defined as significant donations in support of targeted initiatives. Each year, Parker is extremely fortunate to work with donors and foundations that make specific current-use gifts. The School is able to solicit grants due to the high giving participation of our Parker community: Your generosity inspires granting organizations to join us. In the 2018-2019 fiscal year, Parker received generous gifts of almost $100,000. ADMISSIONS OUTREACH AND SUMMER PROGRAM Parker continued to work in partnership with the Mason Hirst Foundation to reduce barriers for families who wish to apply to Parker from historically underserved communities. The Foundation's support eliminates up-front application costs and opens Parker's doors to more families—and it has helped to steadily increase the number of Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten applications over the past three years. The Foundation's grant also provided a Parker Summer Program "jump-start" experience for select Junior and Senior Kindergarten students who will attend Parker in 2019-2020. DRAMA PRODUCTIONS Parker continued to work in partnership with the Rice Family Foundation to enhance the Middle and Upper School performing arts programs that take place in the Amelita Galli-Curci Performing Arts Center. The grant supported the relocation and enhancement of the sound system, lighting upgrades, and the production of elaborate costume design for performances. JAZZ WORKSHOPS For almost a decade, Jeff ’75 and Karen Silberman have been advocates of the Summer Jazz Workshop. Their steadfast dedication continued this past summer. Thanks to their support, Parker was able to offer nine full scholarships and 20 partial scholarships for this workshop to middle and high school students from all over San Diego county.

LINDA VISTA CAMPUS LIBRARY The Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation continued to invest significantly in the Linda Vista Campus Library. This year, the Foundation funded new student collaborative workspace furniture on the first floor and additional library resources on the topics of diversity, citizenship, character education, and student leadership. MIDDLE SCHOOL TURF A generous Parker family supported the installation of premium artificial turf in the Middle School Quad. The turf, which replaced the grass, is used for recreational activities before school, during lunch, and after school. PROGRAM PARTNERSHIPS For the third consecutive year, a Parker family sponsored the Parker / Rady School of Management collaborative program during Parker's interim week. The Entrepreneurship and Innovation course, designed by the Rady School, offered Upper School students a variety of educational experiences such as guest lectures, visits to startups, and the chance to pitch their business ideas to a panel of professional judges.

YOUR SUPPORT Annual giving provides Parker with critical resources—a steady stream that keeps the School moving forward. Your philanthropic support helps us to recover most of the $2,900-per-student difference between the actual cost of a Parker education and what is covered by tuition. Annual gifts ensure that the Parker experience is both distinctive and accessible. While families have children attending Parker, we ask them to place the School among their philanthropic priorities, but broader-based support is important, too. Prospective families and grant-making foundations look favorably upon high giving participation from across the community because it demonstrates far-reaching confidence in the School and our mission. During this giving season, which runs through June 30, 2020, you will have the chance to proudly support the School through one or more of four primary giving opportunities: annual giving for the endowment, which is gratefully received throughout the fiscal year; the Parents Association’s Day of Giving, slated for December 3, 2019 and its annual Gala on May 9, 2020; and the Alumni Giving Day on May 14, 2020. You can take advantage of current tax-year benefits by making a contribution by December 31, 2019. Unlike tuition, gifts to support Parker are fully taxdeductible.

The bronze sculpture “Reflective Child” by Allan Kravitz remains an ageless, ever-present guardian of the Middle School Quad. It was donated to the children of the Middle School by Margie Arneson when the Middle School reopened on the Linda Vista Campus in 1986.
