Francis Parker School is supported by families who understand that their giving ensures Parker is able to provide every student with the best education possible. Every gift enhances the breadth, depth, and scope of the Parker educational program and each student’s individual academic journey. Tuition alone does not cover the full cost of a Parker education; we ask every Parker community member to support our School by making a gift of which they are proud. The 2020 Society is the newest cumulative giving level, named to honor the resilient spirit of the Parker community amidst the global coronavirus pandemic. With students and faculty “sheltering in place” at home, the Parker community banded together to create a new learning environment while staying safe. This society is a tribute to the heroic donors who generously made Parker a philanthropic priority in a time of great uncertainty.
The 1912 Society is a cumulative giving level named to recognize our founders, Clara Sturges Johnson and William Templeton Johnson, who opened Francis Parker School in December 1912 with three students in a little bungalow where the Mission Hills Nursery now stands.

The Legacy Club recognizes donors who have secured Parker’s future through planned gifts. The Club’s symbol, the statue of St. Francis Assisi, stands in the courtyard of the Mission Hills Campus and was dedicated in honor of Parker’s Principal and Director, Ethel Dummer Mintzer. It was sculpted in 1940 by the late Isabelle Schultz Churchman, a Parker teacher, and symbolizes long-lasting treasures.

Ford Foundation, this fund supports Upper School faculty in summer research and writing projects designed to develop new curricula or revise existing curricula. Helen Vortriede Hanson Fund Established in 1992 by Louise Hanson Marshall ’26, Ph.D., in memory of her mother, one of Parker’s first teachers. This fund supports a member of the faculty or staff in activities that will enhance teaching or service at Parker. Dethloff Family Fund Established in 1993 by Glenn and Joanne Dethloff to recognize teaching excellence at Parker, this fund provides three professional or program development awards annually to honor and support the work of faculty or staff members in each of the three divisions. Parents Association Professional Development Fund Established in 2000 by the Francis Parker School Parents Association, this fund supports activities by faculty or staff members to promote or enhance teaching or service that benefits the student body. Innovation Fund Established in 2000 by a generous Parker family, this fund supports any Upper School faculty member for a visionary, creative cause in support of innovative educational projects that are not part of the regular curriculum. Judi Sinnott Award The Judi Sinnott Scholarship Fund provides for the award given to an outstanding Grade 5 student who demonstrates a love of learning, academic potential and performance, and exceptional character. Smith Family Academic Achievement Fund Established in 2000 by Reggie Smith, alumni parent and grandparent, in honor of her grandchildren, this award recognizes a Grade 11 student who excels in math and science and demonstrates extraordinary citizenship. Kirsten Rindal Scholarship Fund Established in 2002 for Kirsten Rindal, former Lower School teacher and Board of Trustees member, this award recognizes an outstanding Grade 5 student. A Former First Grade Teacher Fund Established in 2004 by the estate of a former first grade teacher who taught at Parker for two decades, this award recognizes a rising Grade 6 student who adds to the class both academically and socially and who demonstrates affection for the School. Corie Anne Jensen ’91 Scholarship Fund Established in 2008 by the family and friends of Corie, this award recognizes students who best demonstrate service to others and commitment to the community as embodied by Corie. Chuck Freer Sportsmanship Award Established formally in 2010 in memory of longtime tennis coach and mentor Charles H. Freer, the award, which started in the late 1970s, is given to an Upper School student-athlete.
SPECIAL GIFTS Senior Class Gift The Senior Class Gift supports financial assistance, professional development, and programs. Lawrence Family Scholarship Funded in 2018 by Danny and Sally Lawrence, this gift supports an Upper School student at Parker.
UNIQUE GIFTS Unique gifts are significant donations in support of targeted initiatives. Each year, Parker is extremely fortunate to work with donors and foundations that make specific current-use gifts. The School is able to solicit grants due to the high giving participation of our Parker community. Amelita Galli-Curci Performing Arts Center A generous Parker family donated funds to replace the outdoor amphitheater door on the Jordan Family Stage with a soundproof door to mitigate the noise level coming from the Heart of Campus. Productions and rehearsals can now be staged without noise pollution, making the theater space usable at all hours of the day or night. COVID-19 Crisis Fund An anonymous Parker family donated a current-use gift to assist families who sought tuition assistance due to the COVID-19 pandemic during the 20192020 academic year. Ultimately, the fund provided significant financial relief to 20 students from 14 families and helped them bridge the gap.
Drama Productions The Rice Family Foundation awarded a grant to Parker for the third consecutive year to support Middle and Upper School performing arts. The grant helped to fund a new projector system in the Amelita Galli-Curci Performing Arts Center. With this new technology, drama and theater productions take audiences from the rainy cliffs of Ireland to the bustling streets of New York City— all within the same production, on the same stage. Jazz Workshops Francis Parker School celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Summer Jazz Workshop in summer 2020. Jeff ’75 and Karen Silberman’s decade-long dedication helped turn the traditional annual in-person workshop into a dynamic, virtual success. Because of their philanthropic support, Parker offered 38 middle and high school students from historically underserved communities full scholarships to attend the Summer Jazz Workshop. Students from nearly 20 different San Diego County schools received group instruction on their instruments, and had access to a variety of sessions covering topics in music theory, jazz improvisation, and masterclasses. To culminate each weekly workshop, the students participated in a video performance, and the virtual ensembles were shared with students’ families and community members. Ellen Browning Scripps Investment The Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation investment in students aligns with Parker's number one priority: students come first regardless of whether we are learning digitally or in-person. The Foundation awarded a grant to replenish protective personal equipment (PPE) and replace 3D printers and laser cutter for the Middle and Upper School Design lab and science classes. The School partnered with Scripps Health on a 3D printed visor project to support and protect local health care workers—over 900 face shields were created and donated by Parker. In addition, the School donated science materials and PPE to local organizations. The Foundation’s support recognizes the time, energy, and work that went into supporting our community and provides resources to ensure students have what they need to learn when they return to campus.

YOUR SUPPORT Annual giving provides Parker with critical resources—a steady stream that keeps the School moving forward. Your philanthropic support helps us to recover most of the $3,400-per-student difference between the actual cost of a Parker education and what is covered by tuition. Annual gifts ensure that the Parker experience is both distinctive and accessible. While families have children attending Parker, we ask them to place the School among their philanthropic priorities, but broader-based support is important, too. Prospective families and grant-making foundations look favorably upon high giving participation from across the community because it demonstrates farreaching confidence in the School and our mission. During this giving season, which runs through June 30, 2021, you will have the chance to proudly support the School through one or more of four primary giving opportunities: annual giving for the endowment, which is gratefully received throughout the fiscal year; the Parents Association’s Day of Giving, slated for Dec. 1, 2020, and its annual Gala on March 5, 2021; and the Alumni Giving Days of Impact from May 12 to 14, 2021. You can take advantage of current tax-year benefits by making a contribution by Dec. 31, 2020. Unlike tuition, gifts to support Parker are fully tax-deductible.

ABOUT THE COVER Each year, a Report on Philanthropy cover is designed to honor Parker, and the pages are dedicated to the donors who ensure that we live our mission. This year, especially given the pandemic that forced us to stay home and safe, we celebrate one Parker— three divisions, two campuses, one school. The wooden tree sculpture, designed and built by David Von Behren (pictured left), current grandparent, showcases a learning tree through sectioned frames. The tree, connected to the earth and growing strong despite unforeseen circumstances and challenges, reminds us that we all move forward and grow together.
