Every gift enhances the breadth, depth and scope of the Parker educational program and each student’s individual academic journey. Francis Parker School is supported by families who understand that their giving ensures that Parker is able to provide each student with the best education possible. As tuition alone does not cover the full cost of a Parker education, we ask every Parker community member to support our School. Donors recognized in this report allow Parker to advance our mission. We are most grateful to them and hope the joyful spirit of their support shines throughout this report. The report details gifts made between July 1, 2015, and June 30, 2016, in support of Parker’s endowment and current-use operating needs. We have made every effort to ensure the accuracy of this report. The Parker community is distinguished by the generosity and dedication of its parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty and staff, and friends. Parker recognizes and thanks the extraordinary commitment of the 1,441 donors whose gifts during the 2015–2016 fiscal year enhanced the School’s ability to provide an extraordinary student experience and advance its mission. The School’s financial discipline and award-winning governance help to ensure an exceptional education. While tuition is the largest contributor to revenue, it covers only 91 percent of the actual cost of a Parker education. It is the generosity of our community, captured in this report, that ensures the Parker experience for all of our students. Your philanthropy keeps Parker accessible to a broad range of families, and everyone is asked to contribute.

ENDOWED FUNDS AND SPECIAL GIFTS

Edward E. Ford Foundation Fund Established in 1989 by the E.E. Ford Foundation, this fund supports Upper School faculty in summer research and writing projects designed to develop new curricula revise existing curricula. Helen Vortriede Hanson Fund Established in 1992 by Louise Hanson Marshall, Ph.D. ’26 in memory of her mother, one of Parker’s first teachers. This fund supports a member of the faculty or staff in activities that will enhance teaching or service at Parker. Dethloff Family Fund Established in 1993 by Glenn and Joanne Dethloff to recognize teaching excellence at Parker, this fund provides three professional or program development awards annually to honor and support the work of faculty or staff members in each of the three divisions. Parents Association Professional Development Fund Established in 2000 by the Francis Parker School Parents Association, this fund supports activities by faculty or staff members to promote or enhance teaching or service that benefits the student body. Innovation Fund Established in 2000 by a generous Parker family, this fund supports any Upper School faculty member for a visionary, creative cause in support of innovative educational projects that are not part of the regular curriculum. Sally and David Ramert Social Studies Fund Established in 2000 by Matt Blumberg ’88, Terence and Barbara Gooding, and Kathy Gooding Valverde ’84 in honor of the Ramerts, this fund provides support to enrich the Upper School social studies program and increase opportunities for faculty enrichment and professional development. Faculty Retirement Award Fund Established in 2002 by Cathy Lutge and Marilyn ’08 and Meg ’11 Sullivan, this fund provides an award for faculty and staff members who have loyally served Parker for at least 15 years and meet the minimum age requirement. Mulliken Family-Lane Foundation Endowment for Teaching Excellence Established in 2002 by Noreen and David Mulliken, parents of David ’96 and Doug ’01, and through the support of the Ruth Lane Foundation, this award recognizes outstanding Upper School teachers and coaches who are committed to excellence and dedicated to their students, and whose enthusiasm for teaching upholds Parker’s highest standards. This fund provides teachers or coaches with an award for professional or program development.

W. Lee Pierson Endowed Faculty Summer Sabbatical Seniority Grant Established in 2002 to honor the late Head of School Dr. W. Lee Pierson, this fund provides a summer grant for personal enrichment to a faculty member on the basis of length of service at Parker. Vassiliadis Family Chair in English Established in 2012 by Carol Vassiliadis, former Board of Trustees member and parent of Andrew ’01 and Melissa ’04, to recognize an exceptional faculty member who embodies excellence in educational pedagogy. The current Vassiliadis Family Chair in English is Chris Harrington. PROGRAM ENDOWMENT FUNDS Doris Larson Library Fund Established in 1986 to honor Doris Larson upon her retirement as the Parker librarian, this fund provides books and materials for the School’s libraries. Middle School Fund Established in 1986, this fund provides operating resources for the Middle School. Mary Moore Musical Enrichment Fund Established in 1988 to honor Mary Moore upon her retirement as kindergarten teacher, this fund supplements the Lower School music program.

Paul C. Barkley Fund Established in 1993 to honor the memory of Paul Barkley, Board of Trustees member and parent, this fund provides students the tools and training needed for future success in the world. Ellen Browning Scripps Library Fund Established in 1998 by the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation, this fund supports the Linda Vista Campus library. The Academic Fund for the 21st Century Established in 2000 by Coleman and Ellen Mosley, this fund provides support for faculty and program development opportunities to strengthen and enrich academic and cultural programs.

Koon Family Library Fund Established in 2001 in memory of Evelyn M. Koon, this fund provides support for the Linda Vista Campus library. Parents Association Science and Technology Development Fund Established in 2003 by the Francis Parker School Parents Association, this fund provides support for program development in the areas of science and technology. Hudson Moore ’02 Family Music Fund Established in 2006 by Hudson Moore ’02 and his family, this fund supports the Upper and Middle School music and guitar programs. This fund was inspired by Hudson’s passion for the guitar program and the positive influence of both his guitar teachers, Michael Gonzales and Andy Tirpak, during his Parker career. Gamboa Family Fund Established in 2011 by David and Julie Gamboa. Appel-Collins Family Military Scholarship Fund Established in 2012 by Loreen Collins and Howard Appel, parents of Trevor ’16 and Troy ’18, this fund supports students who are dependents of military parents serving on active duty in a branch of the U.S. armed forces or who have been killed or injured in the line of duty. Class of 2012 Scholarship Established in 2012 by the senior class families. Jones Family Scholarship Fund Established in 2012 by William Jones and Cheryl Sueing-Jones, this fund provides support for underrepresented students who are academically qualified to gain admission to Parker. Marites Quini ’83 Fund Established in 1983 in memory of Marites Quini ’83 who passed away during her senior year at Parker. The Marites Quini Girl of the Year Award is given to an outstanding Grade 12 girl.

Chuck Freer Sportsmanship Award Established formally in 2010 in memory of longtime tennis coach and mentor Charles H. Freer, the award, which started in the late 1970s, is given to an Upper School student-athlete.

Smith Family Academic Achievement Fund Established in 2000 by Reggie Smith, alumni parent and grandparent, this award recognizes a Grade 11 student who excels in math and science and demonstrates extraordinary citizenship. Kirsten Rindal Scholarship Fund Established in 2002 for Kirsten Rindal, former Lower School teacher and Board of Trustees member, this award recognizes an outstanding Grade 5 student. A Former First Grade Teacher Fund Established in 2004 by the estate of a former first grade teacher who taught at Parker for two decades, this award recognizes a rising Grade 6 student who adds to the class both academically and socially, and who demonstrates affection for the School. UNIQUE GIFTS

Unique gifts are defined as significant donations in support of specific initiatives. Each year, Parker is extremely fortunate to work with donors and foundations that make distinct current-use gifts. The School is able to solicit grants due to the high giving participation of our Parker community. In the 2015–2016 fiscal year, Parker received generous gifts totaling over $400,000, which allowed the School to advance five key initiatives: deepening the JK–12 design thinking curriculum; replacing play space at the Lower School; redesigning the Linda Vista library learning environment; strengthening Parker's commitment to financial assistance; and reducing the School's carbon footprint. LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

In summer 2015, Parker applied to the Edward E. Ford Foundation for an investment grant of $50,000. The School proposed deepening the understanding and principles of design thinking in Parker’s academic environment and teaching culture. The proposal called for a bold two-to-one match within 12 months. Thanks to the generosity of four Parker families, we successfully reached our goal in less than six months. The total gifts and grant of $151,000 support our efforts to foster creativity and collaboration in and out of the classroom, allowing students to first “dream big” and then, by applying design thinking, produce real-world possibilities and solutions.

In the 2015–2016 academic year, the technical theater program was forever changed with an investment grant from the Ellen Browning Scripps Foundation. The grant allowed Parker to appropriately equip and fund the technical theater arts program. Working again with the Scripps Foundation, the School applied and received an investment grant to equip and fund a soundproofing art installation in the Linda Vista Campus library’s north and south atriums in the 2016-2017 academic year. The School will match the grant of over $28,000, and the Visual Arts department, along with our facilities management team, will lead the effort to enhance the learning environment in the library.

Ashford University/Bridgepoint Education continue to support Parker’s commitment to increasing access to a Parker education with a $25,000 investment grant toward our current-use financial assistance scholarships. The grant magnifies the Parents Association Gala efforts and inspires others to support Parker, increasing the collective impact of the Gala’s contributions to the School and enhancing the Parker experience for all.

STUDENT PLAY SPACE

CARBON FOOTPRINT REDUCTION

During the 2016 winter break, new playground turf was installed on the Mission Hills Campus. The turf materials include a sand and encapsulated cork infill, which lower the temperature of the playing surface and increase the cushioning of the turf. The turf replacement was made possible by an investment from the School and two anonymous Lower School families who are deeply committed to enhancing the Parker student experience.

Through the efforts of Parker’s student-led environmental club, and thanks to a generous investment from an anonymous Upper School family, Parker installed solar panels on the Amelita Galli-Curci Performing Arts Center, significantly reducing the School’s carbon footprint. The School has teamed up with Sullivan Solar Power. Students will be able to track the School’s carbon reduction through real-time outputs on Campus.

In 1990, the Board of Trustees created the Henry F. Lippitt II ’29 Award to recognize his work as a trustee by honoring individuals who give similar outstanding service to the School.
