In our role as leaders, learners, conveners, and collaborators, the Foundation fosters dialogue among community members, organizational and civic leaders, and stakeholders to identify priority issues and address the root causes of systemic social challenges. This commitment requires us to deepen our understanding of the needs, concerns, and ideas of all community residents, including diverse communities we may not have engaged with in the past.

At the center of it all is the leadership provided by the Foundation’s devoted trustees and growing staff, but we also recognize that our impact is enhanced by your support. Originally from Johnstown, PA and a small community near Pittsburgh, Rick and Judy Scaletta met in college when she was a freshman, and he was a sophomore at Edinboro, now PennWest University. Rick began his career in 1980 at General McLane High School as the director of choral activities and assistant director of bands. His passion for music resonated deeply with students, leading him to endorse the school’s signature Broadway Dinner with memorable student productions. During its tenure, the yearly anticipated event produced 130 performances for more than 33,000 people. During Rick’s tenure, the choir grew from 16 participating students to 88. In 1986, Rick earned his superintendent’s letter of eligibility from a combined program at Westminster and Edinboro after fulfilling goals as assistant principal and principal.

Meanwhile, Judy found her calling in teaching mathematics, with a focus on cultivating students’ critical thinking skills, particularly in calculus. As a life-long learner, she shared her wisdom to help her high school students excel in whatever career path they chose. To this day, Judy remembers her students who graduated to become engineers, pharmacists, and teachers too.

With over 40 years of service at General McLane, the couple saw education as more than just a job—they saw education as an opportunity to shape young minds and make a lasting impact.

Recognizing the importance of giving back, the Scalettas chose The Erie Community Foundation to assist in planning their philanthropic goals. They joined the Elisha H. Mack Bequest Society, which recognizes donors who create an estate plan to support nonprofits through the Foundation. After talking with their attorney, they established a donor designated fund to support and benefit their favorite causes forever including McLane Church, the Erie Philharmonic, and Friends of General McLane Vocal Music with the Rick and Judy Scaletta Musical Theater Scholarships.

As well-known, long-time residents of the Edinboro Community, the Scalettas continue to embody generosity, enriching the lives of others through faith, music, and education.

In 2007, a visionary cohort gathered around a shared mission: to ignite a passion for philanthropy among women of all ages, incomes, and backgrounds. Today, their vision has blossomed into a vibrant community of nearly 200 members, collectively contributing over $1.1 million to date to local nonprofits that empower women and families – a vision that most likely well surpassed Ed Doll’s imagination for the Foundation.

THE EMERGING ERIE FUND SPIRIT OF PHILANTHROPY AWARD honors a dynamic young Erie professional committed to improving the Erie region through philanthropy and leadership. The Emerging Erie Fund, previously known as the Young Erie Philanthropists, is a field of interest fund housed at the Foundation and overseen by a volunteer advisory board.

CONGRATULATIONS TO PETER “ALEC” ZAPHIRIS!

A senior account executive at Great Lakes Insurance, Alec plays a crucial role as the chair of the fund development committee for the Emerging Erie Fund.

Since the fund's inception, Alec has been actively involved in the group, tirelessly seeking corporate sponsors and building committees to support the Emerging Erie Fund. Over the past two years, Alec and his counterparts have raised an impressive $115,000, significantly boosting the fund’s annual grant award from its original $5,000 to over $75,000 within four years. Despite his achievements, Alec remains humble, crediting his fellow board members and the fund development team for their collective success.

Beyond his professional life and Emerging Erie Fund leadership, Alec is engaged in many community initiatives. Whether he volunteers at fundraisers, like the Boys & Girls Club’s “Kiss- A-Pig” event, works with friends to coordinate the Boys & Girls Club golf tournament, or collaborates with United Way Community Schools Program to support McKinley Elementary School, Alec works tirelessly to improve the Erie community.

Always one to show initiative and learn as much as possible about the nonprofits in our community, Gianna joined the Foundation’s community impact team as an intern in the summer of 2022 when she was a sophomore in high school. This experience proved transformative, leading her to recalibrate her academic path from business or engineering to social work, driven by her desire to make a meaningful difference in others’ lives. Now, under the umbrella of Creative Community Connectors, Inc., the Blue Coats has grown to be a group of forty concerned and caring adult mentors providing a sense of security to Erie’s school students. Many of the Blue Coats, both men and women, grew up in the same neighborhoods where Erie students currently reside, which makes them credible to the students. As a result of the measurable, successful work of the Blue Coats, the Foundation granted $35,000 to bolster the program through 2024.

HOUSING FIRST ERIE AND CONSTRUCTION TRADES: ENGAGING PARTNERS TO HOUSE OUR NEIGHBORS

Addressing the multifaceted needs of Erie’s unhoused population has been a pressing concern for community leaders for years. In November 2022, a collaborative effort led to the establishment of the Housing First Erie Project. Addressing homelessness was identified as a priority within the Investment Playbook, a comprehensive strategy leveraging state and federal funding for economic and community development.

At its core, Housing First Erie embodies an evidence-based approach demonstrating that individuals achieve stability when swiftly connected with permanent housing and supplemented with intensive supportive services. Housing First Erie, a public-private partnership, aims to combat chronic homelessness in Erie County through this model and will develop permanent supportive housing for 150 chronically homeless individuals.

37

The robust Housing First Project Team comprises key stakeholders such as the city, county, Hamot Health Foundation, Highmark Health, Allegheny Health Network, Gannon University, Housing Authority, Erie Home Team, Erie County Care Management, and Mercyhurst University. Through community outreach, dialogue, and research, the initiative is in full motion.

While several organizations in Erie provide immediate assistance to those experiencing homelessness, Housing First Erie targets individuals who have remained unhoused for over a year. The Housing First model is effective, offering promising outcomes such as an 80% retention rate in stable housing, substantial cost savings in emergency services, and reduced rates of trauma and addiction. These outcomes underscore the importance of intentional planning, commitment, and leadership in addressing homelessness effectively.

Each year, Corry Community Foundation presents the Spirit of Giving award to deserving individuals, businesses, or organizations whose efforts and accomplishments have contributed in some way to improving the quality of life in Corry, PA.

The Findley Lake Community Foundation, named after its first settler, Alexander Findley, serves the community of Findley Lake, New York. A few years after purchasing the land in 1811, Findley built a dam at the north end of two adjoining ponds. That dam created Findley Lake, which features over five miles of breathtaking shoreline.

With a new look and a new logo, the 14th Annual Erie Gives is set for Tuesday, August 13, 2024. Thanks to the support of corporate and community partners, who provide the Bonus Bucks and the hourly $500 grants, Erie Gives is a community-spirited event like no other. Since its inception, Erie Gives has raised over $56.5 million for local nonprofits.

Erie Gives takes place online at ErieGives.org and in-person at The Erie Community Foundation, 459 West 6th Street. Whether a gift is made by check or from a required minimum distribution of an IRA, both can be mailed to The Erie Community Foundation or hand delivered on the day of Erie Gives.

NEW THIS YEAR

Our new partnership with Country Fair is in full swing! Erie Gives is honored to be the sole recipient of donations made from Country Fair through their Charity Pump Program. This means 2 cents of every gallon purchased (now through August 13) will be donated to Erie Gives. All donations will be evenly distributed amongst Erie Gives participating charities.

57 2023 ANNUAL REPORT: Inspiring Progress

Encourage your donors, staff, and board members to sign up to be loyalty members at any of the 36 Country Fair locations. Donors who patronize Country Fair locations to purchase gas must simply enter their Club CITGO ID at the pump and pay with a CITGO gift card. The consumer saves 13 cents per gallon and Country Fair donates 2 cents per gallon to Erie Gives. Now through Erie Gives, ask your family and friends to fill up their tanks-this is the summer for road trips.

58 2023 ANNUAL REPORT: Inspiring Progress

Also new this year: the Erie Gives website will be live for 24 hours! Online giving will be more convenient for those who work second or third shifts and those who live in different time zones. We are excited to offer more chances to GIVE! Staff phone support will remain on Tuesday, August 13 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. We look forward to taking your calls.

SUSANNAH WEIS FRIGON, CFP®, our former vice president of philanthropic services, retired from her role in January 2024. Since joining our team in 2013, Susannah spearheaded transformative initiatives, including guiding the Erie Women’s Fund through a strategic planning overhaul. Her leadership enhanced membership engagement and financially amplified the impact of the Erie Women’s Fund. We also want to recognize her above and beyond skills when she assumed the role of interim president of the Foundation during a pivotal three-month period. Susannah’s leadership ensured a smooth transition.

In May 2024, we wished a joyful retirement to SANDRA K. WILLIAMS, our dedicated philanthropic services associate, who lent her expertise to the Foundation since 2018. Her interaction with donors seeking to create funds or make grants was beyond comparison. Sandi’s support across donor stewardship and development efforts was instrumental in advancing our mission and growing the Foundation’s assets.

June 2024 marked the retirement of BARBARA F. SAMBROAK, C.P.A., chief financial officer, who joined the Foundation in 2006. Barb grew along with the Foundation, earning a Master of Business Administration, with distinction, from Gannon University in 1997, and she became a Certified Public Accountant in 2000. Barb worked alongside ECF Trustees as the Foundation’s assets grew from $140 million to nearly $400 million during her tenure. Barb’s stewardship of our financial, accounting, and human resources was exemplary. Always dedicated to our mission, Barb remains actively engaged in the community.
