Exercise 1.1: A Vocabulary and A Grammar For this project students were asked to create a 9” x9” Object (at right) made out of two materials. They were initially tasked with creating 4.5”x4.5” study models (pictured below). Students were tasked to focus on creating space, the combination of materials and the creation of form.

The three study models constructed served as an exploration of different materiality in combination with a variety of construction technique and overall form from planar, linear and volumetric.

Exercise 2.1: Scale, Movement and Context For this project students were asked to draw a floorplan, elevation or section of a building on Syracuse University’s campus. I drew the main floorplan of Newhouse 3 by Polshek and Partners (far Right). The drawings had to completed based off of measurements taken using the human body and could not be a copy of existing plans.

At the end we had to create a series of perspective drawings (Close Right) to tie our work in with students who had done a different aspect of the same building.

Exercise 2.2: Scale, Movement and Context Continued For this project students were asked to take the object that they made in exercise 1.1 and abstract it into an architectural space.

The model had to indicate a hierarchical sequence and a defined path of movement through multiple spaces.

I choose to work with texture and materiality to help guide users through a set of simple spaces. Below are a series of study models and at right is the final 9� x 9� model.

Exercise 3: Learning How To Learn From Architecture For This project each student was given a significant work of architecture to analyze. I analyzed Pritzker prize winning firm RCR Arquitectes’ Case Rural.

We then had to create a set of drawings to illustrate our analysis in pursuit of a thesis driven argument.

I focused on the relationship of the existing landscape with an interior void that helped to define the differing volumes of the building.

Exercise 4.1: The Spatial Implications of Making and Exhibiting Art The Culmitanting project for our first semester was to create a living, working and exhibition space for an artist. The building had to be inspired by a specific piece of art done by that artist. My artist was Marcel Duchamp, and the advertisment that he did for Archie Pen Co. The first part of the exercise was to create a site with my studio section as we would be creating an artistic village so there needed to be a realtionship developmed as a group.
