A NOTE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR The Armory strives to provide its audiences with the opportunity to experience masterful and thought-provoking works that are in dialogue with the sweep of the Armory’s unique spaces. And there is no better setting than the Board of Officers Room, with its pristine acoustics and austere elegance, to offer audiences the chance to enjoy the intimacy of recitals and music-making.

Now in its fourth year, the recital series showcases more maverick musicians than ever before with an even greater breadth of works spanning more than six centuries. Building on our commitment to the art form that unites song and poetry, we feature the dynamic soprano Lisette Oropesa for an artfully-curated series of Spanish, German, and French art songs and the expressive countertenor Andreas Scholl, who performs a program of English Renaissance and Baroque gems.

We take the art form in exciting new directions with the Grammy Award-winning Roomful of Teeth in a performance exploring vocal music of the 21st century, a recital by the JACK Quartet performing the world premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Roger Reynold’s FLiGHT, and an interpretation of Nina Simone’s iconic voice through the cello of the intriguing Sonia Wieder-Atherton.

We also welcome burnished baritone Roderick Williams as well as Andreas Ottensamer, principal clarinettist of the Berliner Philharmoniker, for their thrilling North American recital debuts. Together with a program of Beethoven’s wondrous violin sonatas by Kristof Baráti, a poignant and heartfelt evening of lieder and art song performed by lyric soprano Kate Royal, and our ongoing partnership with the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program that spotlights the next generation of opera greats, this year’s lineup allows even more opportunities than ever before to witness major talent in the most personal of settings.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM High Done No Why To High Done No Why To was written while in residency with Roomful of Teeth and represents my initial attempt to synthesize their many amazing extended vocal techniques into a single, coherent piece. I decided to use words like “sound” instead of “lyrics” in order to stay focused on texture and harmony (rather than getting caught up in an external narrative). The ending of the piece was written from midnight to 6am on the eve of our final rehearsal of the residency and is meant to bring a sense of catharsis to the end of a somewhat restless and angular piece.

—William Brittelle Vesper Sparrow Vesper Sparrow was written for Roomful of Teeth at their 2012 residency at Mass MoCA. The text comes from Farnoosh Fathi’s poem “Home State,” from her recent book Great Guns.

The piece is an eclectic amalgamation of imaginary birdsong and my own interpretation of Sardinian overtone singing. In this piece I tried to capture the exuberance and energy of these individual singers.

—Missy Mazzoli Just Constellations (2015, premiere of 2016 revised version) Ever since the 1980’s, when I started working as La Monte Young’s composition and tuning assistant, I wanted to compose a work like Just Constellations for specialized singers exploring gradually evolving constellations of tones in extended just intonation tunings. However, it was not until Brad Wells commissioned me to compose for Roomful of Teeth that the opportunity finally presented itself.

Just Constellations is approximately 18 minutes in duration.

It is comprised of four interconnected constellations of justly tuned chords and modes. The first three of these are related to harmonic regions of La Monte Young’s epic The Well-Tuned Piano using tunings based on the harmonic primes 2, 3, and 7. “The Magic Constellation” presents three variations of “The Theme of The Magic Chord,” which is one of the simplest but most profound themes from The Well-Tuned Piano. The Acoustic Constellation is based on the fourth octave of the harmonic series and uses what is often referred to as the “acoustic” mode, using the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 16th partials of the harmonic series. (I replace the 13th partial with the 27th partial down an octave.)

Nom-tom syllables are used throughout the work. Although the sounds of this ancient musical language are derived from mantras they have no literal meaning. Nom-tom has been used

by Indian classical vocalists for centuries to create beautiful vocal timbres and rhythmic accentuations. In “The Magic Constellation,” sargam syllables, or the Indian equivalent to solfege, are also used.

“Just intonation is the tuning system of the later ancient Greek modes as codified by Ptolemy; it was the aesthetic ideal of the Renaissance theorists; and it is the tuning practice of a great many musical cultures worldwide, both ancient and modern” (Bob Gilmore, “Maximum Clarity” and Other Writings on Music). It is any musical tuning in which the frequencies of notes are related by ratios of whole numbers. The two notes in any just interval are members of the same harmonic series and are called “just” or pure. Historic just intonation uses only notes derived from multiples of the prime numbers 2, 3, and 5, while “extended” just intonation includes higher primes such as 7, 11, and 13. Just intonation can be contrasted with equal temperament, which dominates most Western instruments, and compromises the purity and harmonic integrity of music for the convenience of having 12 equally spaced notes.

Hanuman’s Leap This story comes from the Ramayana, a 2,500-year-old epic poem from India. I read it all summer in 2012, in the luminous prose translation by Ramesh Menon, and could hardly put it down. Whoever you are, you can pick up this wonderful book and find yourself at home, whether you were brought up on Chrétien de Troyes or Star Wars: it’s the story of a kidnapped princess, a daring rescue, and a battle between good and evil.

Epic poems are traditionally sung, but few traditions of live performance survived the 20th century. It’s a challenging genre for the modern mind. Bards recite (or, in some cases, improvise) stories that can run for many nights – Manas, the national epic of Kyrgyzstan, is roughly half a million lines long, and the Tibetan epic of Gesar can be twice that. The poetry is sung in short, endlessly-repeating musical phrases that articulate the meter rather than the action, which results in a surface that, to our ears, is undramatic and monotonous.

I’ve listened to a lot of it, and I wish I could tell you that it isn’t.

The drama, of course, is in the story, and I lamented that I would never hear a traditional epic sung in a language I understand. English has none; we wrote ours down and forgot how to sing them long ago. I wanted to see what it would feel like, and so I started writing a bit of a story I love into verse.

Then I started to chant it, then sing it, then dance it. Four years later I’m still discovering what it is and how I can bring it to life. Thanks for listening.

Roomful of Teeth is a Grammy Award-winning vocal project dedicated to mining the expressive potential of the human voice. Through study with masters from singing traditions the world over, the eight-voice ensemble continually expands its vocabulary of singing techniques and, through an ongoing commissioning process, forges a new repertoire without borders.

Founded in 2009 by Brad Wells, the group gathers annually at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) in North Adams, Massachusetts, where they’ve studied Tuvan throat singing, yodeling, belting, Inuit throat singing, Korean P’ansori, Georgian singing, Sardinian cantu a tenore, Hindustani music, and Persian classical singing with some of the world’s top performers and teachers. Commissioned composers include Rinde Eckert, Judd Greenstein, Caleb Burhans, Merrill Garbus (of tUnE-yArDs), William Brittelle, Anna Clyne, Fred Hersch, Wally Gunn, Sarah Kirkland Snider, Missy Mazzoli, Michael Harrison, Sam Amidon, and Ted Hearne.

Projects in 2015-2016 include The Colorado, a music-driven documentary film that explores water, land, and survival in the Colorado River Basin (featuring former Kronos Quartet cellist Jeffrey Zeigler and Wilco’s Glenn Kotche); collaborations with NOW Ensemble, Kanye West, and the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME); performances with the Seattle Symphony featuring Luciano Berio’s Sinfonia; appearances at new music festivals in the U.S., Mexico, and Vancouver; and partnerships with over a dozen higher education institutions across the country.

One half new music ensemble, one half art-rock band, TIGUE unites homegrown ethos and conservatory precision. Praised for their energetic and focused performances, the Ohio-born, Brooklyn-based members have worked together extensively on original and composed music for nearly half a decade.

Formed in 2012 following their concurrent studies at both the Eastman School of Music and the Ohio State University, TIGUE crystallized out of, and in spite of, the eclectic contemporary, pop, and avant-garde influences inherent in their DNA. TIGUE approaches the role of a performing ensemble with a unique fluidity—collaborating through multi-disciplinary work, commissioning and performing works by living composers, and simultaneously generating material of their own. In 2012, TIGUE began their efforts by leading the commission of Sleeping Giant composer Robert Honstein’s ambitious percussion trio An Index of Possibility. In the fall of 2014 TIGUE worked closely with Ohio/NYC based sculpture artist Michael Mercil developing an evening length performance piece Thoreau’s Desk: Some Assembly Required for the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum’s “Walden, revisited” exhibition opening. The work is part music performance and part live sculpture creation including an abundant use of power tools and the recitation of selections from John Cage’s text on Henry Thoreau. This past fall, TIGUE teamed up with the conceptual percussion project of Kid Millions “Man Forever” to create and record a series of all-percussion pieces loosely based on the music of Moondog.

The recording was partially funded by a New Music USA Project Grant and a selection of these pieces premiered as part of the 2016 Ecstatic Music Festival. Alongside collaborative efforts, the members of TIGUE have shaped a personalized compositional language that infuses traditional song forms and pop idioms with compositional complexity and improvisation.

Their debut album Peaks was released with New Amsterdam Records in 2015.

The members of TIGUE are also dedicated to outreach and community projects. In collaboration with Make Music New York, the trio has led two 10-week music education programs with inmates at New York City’s Rikers Island Correctional Facility, featured in both The New York Times and Rolling Stone. Working with inmates in both men’s and women’s facilitates, the trio shared the communicative nature of music through West African musical traditions and hand drumming culminating with inmate performances for the Rikers population. TIGUE has also presented workshops and masterclasses for individuals of all ages.

TIGUE is actively performing around the country with recent season highlights including appearances at the Ecstatic Music Festival, Constellation Chicago, the Noguchi Museum, the Greene Space at WNYC, the International Beethoven Festival, the Color Field Festival, the Frieze Festival, Roulette, Dartmouth College, The Ohio State University, The Kitchen, the Short North Stage, Le Poisson Rouge, and National Sawdust. When using sticks and mallets, TIGUE proudly endorses Vic Firth.

Elliott Cole is a composer, singer, and programmer. Postludes, his book of bowed vibraphone quartets, is a new staple of percussion repertoire, having been performed by over 140 ensembles all over the world. He has sung his Hanuman’s Leap, a bardic epic for voices and drums, in 15 cities. His creative friendship (part band, part book club) with Brad and Doug Balliett and Majel Connery has produced opera and lit-hop collaborations with the Chicago Composers Orchestra, New Vintage Baroque, Metropolis Ensemble, the Berkshire Fringe Festival, and the Lucerne Festival Academy, where they were Spotlight Artists in 2011. He lives in Jersey City and teaches at the Manhattan School of Music, The New School, and Sing Sing correctional facility.

ABOUT THE ARMORY Part American palace, part industrial shed, Park Avenue Armory is dedicated to supporting unconventional works in the visual and performing arts that need non-traditional spaces for their full realization, enabling artists to create and audiences to consume epic and adventurous presentations that can not be mounted elsewhere in New York City. In its first eight years, the Armory opened its doors to visionary artists, directors, and impresarios who provided extraordinary experiences in a range of art forms. Such was its impact that in December 2011, The New York Times noted, “Park Avenue Armory… has arrived as the most important new cultural institution in New York City.”

Built between 1877 and 1881, Park Avenue Armory has been hailed as containing “the single most important collection of nineteenth century interiors to survive intact in one building” by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. The 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall, with an 80-foot-high barrel vaulted roof, is one of the largest unobstructed spaces in New York City. The Armory’s magnificent reception rooms were designed by leaders of the American Aesthetic Movement, among them Louis Comfort Tiffany, Stanford White, Candace Wheeler, and Herter Brothers. The building is currently undergoing a $200-million renovation designed by Herzog & de Meuron.

Featuring original films co-directed by Anohni and Australian artist Lynette Wallworth, the celebrated singer, composer, and visual artist will bring her politically charged masterpiece to audiences in an environment unlike any other. Groundbreaking artist Taryn Simon creates an immersive new work unlike any other, in which the subjects themselves become the objects of exhibition. Simon directs and designs both an environment and experience created specifically for the drill hall that defies mediums and the lines between performer and viewer. Experienced after sundown under the cover of darkness, this multifaceted work – at once intensely solitary and somberly communal – blends performance, sound, and architecture.

october 13–14 “To journey into Saariaho’s music is to be confronted with the darkest and most dazzling dimensions of your subconscious.” —The Guardian (UK) The revered New York Philharmonic returns to the Armory for the New York premiere of Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho’s Circle Map, a new work for orchestra and electronics that builds out from six stanzas by the 13th-century Persian poet Rumi, and D’om la Vrai Sens. The evening also includes the U.S. premiere of Lumiére et Pesanteur as well as Lonh, a work that combines medieval love poetry sung by rising soprano Jennifer Zetlan with an electronic score that manipulates sounds from nature to evoke a distant, luminous landscape.

Turner Prize-winning, British artist Martin Creed continues his ongoing exploration into rhythm, scale, and order in his largest installation in the U.S. to date, a survey of his work from its most minimal moments to extravagant, larger-thanlife installations. Crossing all media including painting, drawing, music, dance, theater, film, sculpture, fashion, and more unclassifiable items such as runners or lights going on and off, his practice transforms the everyday into surprising meditations on existence and the invisible structures that shape our lives.

Park Avenue Armory invites parents and children to participate in interactive art-making workshops in our historic period rooms. Drawing upon the Armory’s castle-like setting and unique artistic offerings, these programs are offered monthly during the school year and designed to spark the imagination of children of all ages.

ABOUT THE BOARD OF OFFICERS ROOM “The restoration of the Park Avenue Armory seems destined to set a new standard, not so much for its scale, but for its level of respect and imagination.”

– The New York Times The Board of Officers Room is one of the most important historic rooms in America and one of the few remaining interiors by Herter Brothers. After decades of progressive damage and neglect, the room completed a revitalization in 2013 by the architecture team at Herzog & de Meuron and executive architects Platt Byard Dovell White Architects to transform the space into a state-of-the- art salon for intimate performances and other contemporary art programing.

The Board of Officers Room is the third period room at the Armory completed (out of 18) and represents the full range of design tools utilized by the team including the removal of accumulated layers on the surfaces, the addition of contemporary lighting to the 1897 chandeliers, new interpretations of the stencil patterns on areas of loss, the addition of metallic finishes on new materials, new programming infrastructure, and custom designed furniture.

The room’s restoration is part of an ongoing $200-million transformation, which is guided by the understanding that the Armory’s rich history and the patina of time are essential to its character. A defining component of the design process for the period rooms is the close collaboration between architect and artisan. Highly skilled craftspeople working in wood, paint, plaster, and metals were employed in the creation of the building’s original interiors and the expertise – and hand – of similar artisans has been drawn upon for the renovation work throughout.
