WELCOME In 2017, Park Avenue Armory celebrates 10 years as New York’s newest cultural institution. The mission of our notfor-profit entity is to support unconventional works in the performing and visual arts that cannot be performed in a traditional proscenium theater, concert hall, or white wall gallery. With its soaring, column-free, 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall and its Gilded Age period rooms, the Armory enables artists to create, students to explore, and audiences to experience epic and adventurous work that cannot be done elsewhere in New York. The Armory’s evolution as a major provider of unexpected, immersive, and eclectic cultural productions began as an experiment. It has now become a fixture in the cultural life of New York. Perhaps The New York Times said it best in 2016 when they proclaimed: “… few cultural institutions have been as adept at pushing the cultural FOMO button, triggering that ‘fear of missing out’ that New Yorkers hate.” We are thrilled to showcase the latest collaboration of Jacques Herzog, Pierre de Meuron, and Ai Weiwei in a site specific Armory commission. Hansel & Gretel extends dynamic creative synergies that exist between their practices and adds a new dimension to the imaginative, monumental work they’ve created together. CURATORIAL STATEMENT Hansel & Gretel is the latest work in the complex and exceptionally fruitful collaboration between Pritzker Prizewinning Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron (architects for the Armory’s renovation) and the Chinese artist/ activist Ai Weiwei. Having worked together for fifteen years in the field of art and architecture, never defining their roles and thus creating unexpected results, they have collaborated on projects such as the “Bird’s Nest” stadium for the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 and the 2012 pavilion for the Serpentine Gallery in London. Hansel & Gretel brings together their combined interests in the psychological impact of architecture and the politics of public space; creating a playful, strange, and eventually eerie environment with different layers of reality revealed to the visitors first in the Wade Thompson Drill Hall and then in the Head House of the Park Avenue Armory. The initial impulse for the project was to transform the vast Wade Thompson Drill Hall into a public park, a place of free movement and play, open 24 hours and accessible from street level. Hansel & Gretel is, however, quite the opposite, a dystopian forest of projected light where the floor rises up, as if lifted by an invisible force, and visitors are tracked by infrared cameras and surveyed by overhead drones as they systematically capture the parkgoers’ data and movements. Here the breadcrumbs of the famous Hansel and Gretel fairy tale are not eaten by birds but rather digital crumbs are gathered and stored, reminiscent of Ray Bradbury’s poignant, 1953, science fiction, Fahrenheit 451, where an omniscient state surveils its citizens from the skies. Entering from a small street-level doorway on Lexington Avenue through a long darkening tunnel, the visitor experiences both psychological menace and exhilarating wonder upon exiting into the expansive landscape of the dimmed Wade Thompson Drill Hall, animated by interactive projections mapping the visitor’s every move. Utilizing state-of-the art surveillance technology, the installation is both an enticingly playful and unnerving experience of what it means to be constantly watched, of public space without anonymity. Only upon leaving the Wade Thompson Drill Hall and entering the hallways of the historic Head House, does the visitor discover through a continuation of the installation the extent of what has been seen and captured. An extensive digital library of surveillance histories and technologies is available for further research. In an age of constant scrutiny and data storage beyond the knowledge and control of ordinary citizens, Hansel & Gretel is perhaps less fantastical and more menacing than it may at first appear. —Tom Eccles and Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Curators armoryonpark.org
ABOUT THE ARTISTS ABOUT JACQUES HERZOG AND PIERRE DE MEURON Pritzker Prize-winning architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron were born in Basel in 1950, and studied architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH) from 1970 to 1975 with Aldo Rossi and Dolf Schnebli. They received their degree in architecture in 1975 and established Herzog & de Meuron in Basel in 1978, a firm known for designs that are at once highly inventive and sensitive to the site, geography, and culture of the region for which they are planned. Herzog & de Meuron’s projects range from highly recognized public facilities, such as their stadiums and museums, to distinguished private projects such as apartment buildings, offices, and factories. A selection of their most recognized buildings to date include the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany, 2016; the Tate Modern and its extension, the Switch House, London, UK, 2016; 1111 Lincoln Road, a mixed-use parking facility, Miami, Florida, USA, 2010; and Prada Aoyama, Tokyo, Japan, 2003.
ABOUT AI WEIWEI Ai Weiwei is renowned for making strong aesthetic statements that resonate with timely phenomena across today’s geopolitical world. From architecture to installations, social media to documentaries, Ai uses a wide range of mediums as expressions of new ways for his audiences to examine society and its values. Recent exhibitions include: Law of the Journey at the National Gallery in Prague, Ai Weiwei. Libero at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, #SafePassage at Foam in Amsterdam, translocation transformation at 21er Haus in Vienna, Andy Warhol | Ai Weiwei at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, Ai Weiwei at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, and @Large: Ai Weiwei on Alcatraz in San Francisco. Ai was born in Beijing in 1957 and currently resides and works in both Beijing and Berlin. Ai is the current Einstein Visiting Professor at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK), and he is the recipient of the 2015 Ambassador of Conscience Award from Amnesty International and the 2012 Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent from the Human Rights Foundation.
In many projects Herzog & de Meuron have worked with artists, an eminent example of that practice being the collaboration with Rémy Zaugg (Roche Pharma-Research Building 92, Basel, 2000; and many more); with Thomas Ruff (Eberswalde Technical School Library, Eberswalde, Germany, 1999, among others); and with Michael Craig-Martin (Laban Dance Centre, London, UK, 2003).

ABOUT THE ARMORY Part American palace, part industrial shed, Park Avenue Armory is dedicated to supporting unconventional works in the visual and performing arts that need non-traditional spaces for their full realization, enabling artists to create, students to explore, and audiences to consume epic and adventurous presentations that can not be mounted elsewhere in New York City. Since its first production in September 2007, the Armory has organized and commissioned immersive performances, installations, and cross-disciplinary collaborations by visionary artists, directors, and impresarios in its vast drill hall that defy traditional categorization and to push the boundaries of their practice. In its historic period rooms, the Armory presents small-scale performances and programs, including its acclaimed Recital Series in the intimate salon setting of the Board of Officers Room and the Artists Studio series in the newly restored Veterans Room. The Armory also offers robust arts education programs at no cost to underserved New York City public school students, engaging them with the institution’s artistic programming and the building’s history and architecture. Built between 1877 and 1881, Park Avenue Armory has been hailed as containing “the single most important collection of nineteenth century interiors to survive intact in one building” by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. The 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall, with an 80-foot-high barrel vaulted roof, is one of the largest unobstructed spaces in New York City. The Armory’s magnificent reception rooms were designed by leaders of the American Aesthetic Movement, among them Louis Comfort Tiffany, Stanford White, Candace Wheeler, and Herter Brothers. The building is currently undergoing a $210-million renovation designed by Herzog & de Meuron and Platt Byard Dovell White Architects as Executive Architects.
HANSEL & GRETEL ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAM Arts education is one of the three prime missions of the Armory. Offered at no cost to New York City public schools, students are exposed to the work and creative process of world-class artists. They explore epic works of performing and visual art with experienced Armory teaching artists, and then express their own interpretation using a different art form. Just as each performing arts program at the Armory touts at least one dedicated student matinee, each installation also extends exclusive “student only” hours for New York City public schools, allowing over 500 NYC public school students to experience Hansel & Gretel.
preferences convenient or alarming?; what are the places people are surveilled (and are they always aware that it is happening)? Some students are creating movement pieces while connected to a spool of yarn, creating a visual illustration of the “breadcrumbs” and how humans might look as data sets; other students are interviewing one another and creating performance art works that detail the process of collecting data; other students are writing two-part spoken word pieces with half of the group functioning as citizens responding to surveillance and the other half of the group in the role of the entity conducting surveillance.
In developing the Hansel & Gretel arts education program, the title—which calls to mind the familiar fairy tale of the same name featuring two young people as central characters—was an immediate point of entry for students as they experience the work and help to set the groundwork for exploring the primary issue of this piece: surveillance.
Students and teaching artists also got the chance to meet with artists Jacques Herzog, Pierre de Meuron, and Ai Weiwei to discuss the work and how they hope it resonates with Armory audiences of all ages.

september 21–27 “A wonderfully fluent and effective piece of music theatre” —The Guardian (UK) Based on the life and work of South African poet Ingrid Jonker, this groundbreaking work by innovative composer and creator Michel van der Aa combines live action, innovative techniques of interactive film, and inventive music to consider the ways in which we reconstruct and deal with traumatic life events. Soprano Miah Persson sings live, combined with replayed loops of herself and the voice of baritone Roderick Williams in 3D film to create haunting musical passages and ensembles, and in the process, an entirely new form of opera.

This remarkable presentation marks the first performance in New York of a major work by Boulez since his death in early 2016.

MALKIN LECTURE SERIES
Each fall, the popular Malkin Lecture Series presents scholars and experts on topics relating to the Armory and the civic, cultural, and aesthetic life of New York City in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Lecture topics have ranged from history makers like Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt to Gilded Age society’s favorite restaurants and the Hudson River painters.
ARMORY AFTER HOURS
Salon culture has enlivened art since the 19th century, when friends gathered in elegant chambers to hear intimate performances and share artistic insights. Join us following select performances for libations with fellow attendees as we revive this tradition in our historic period rooms. You may also get to talk with the evening’s artists, who often greet friends and audience members following their performances.
Launched in 2010, the Armory’s artist-in-residence program supports artists across genres in the creation and development of new work. Each artist sets up a studio in one of the Armory’s period rooms, providing a unique backdrop that can serve as both inspiration and as a collaborator in their project development. Residencies also include participation in the Armory’s arts education program with artists working closely with the Armory’s Youth Corps interns. This season’s artists-inresidence include playwright and screenwriter Lynn Nottage, Cuban installation and performace artist Tania Bruguera, composer and guitarist Marvin Sewell, choreographer and flexn dance pioneer Reggie (Regg Roc) Gray and his company the D.R.E.A.M.
