I

Editor’s Letter

t is with great pride and pleasure that I am able to introduce the inaugural issue of PARK magazine, just as New York comes roaring back, as is witnessed by its own homecoming concert in Central Park. I have never been prouder to be a New Yorker and am so excited to share all the people and places that make this the most inspiring and resilient city in the world. This first issue has been a true labor of love, and I am so honored to work with some of the country’s most recognized names in the editorial, publishing, public relations and entertainment worlds, who have helped to make this such an exciting issue. Whether you are looking to escape reality and get lost in our pages about some of our favorite escapes, from a Grecian holiday fit for a goddess to a laidback yet luxurious Maldives resort, plus some of our top editorial resort wear picks, fashion shoots, best old and new dining spots which have survived the pandemic and much more, we hope to be your go-to New York-centric publication. Famed writer George Wayne gives the inside scoop – and gossip – on the city’s most important social event, the Met Gala, while our special archive of vintage photos from celebrity photographer, Patrick McMullan, featuring some of the most iconic legends, brings on the nostalgia from New York’s golden years. She’s ageless. She’s sizzling. And yes, she’s still smoldering hot. She’s Suzanne Somers, our classic yet cutting-edge fall cover girl! Meet the Suzanne you have come to know over the years; and learn even more things about this actress, author and advocate you didn’t know. This special feature also highlights some rare photos of this timeless entertainer from over the last few decades. We also can’t wait to introduce you to Susanna Salk, whose interior décor insight, books and “Quintessence: At Home With” YouTube series has garnered millions of fans, as well as Alison Kenworthy of Homeworthy, who gives an insider’s look into the eccentric homes and humans she showcases via her growing platform. I want to thank my tremendous team, especially our publisher, Christopher Pape, for bringing this vision to life amidst a pandemic – I am glad to find people as crazy – or idealistic as I am! As John Lennon would say, “A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality.” Mostly, I want to thank you, dear reader, for now being a part of this dream. I hope that you enjoy PARK as much as we do. Please write to me at julie@parkmagazineny.com, I would love to hear from you! P

S

From the Publisher

ome have called me idealistic, some have suggested it’s bad timing, while others have said I’m too passionate, but whatever the reason, print publications are part of my DNA. And so, I welcome you to the pages of PARK, Manhattan’s newest (and may I be so bold as to say, most impressive) luxury lifestyle magazine. This labor of love is dedicated to our great city, New York. So enthralled were we to the resilience and timelessness of the place where we call home that we worked tirelessly to produce this publication. A publication, which stands for all that is good in this, the capital of the world. For those that don’t know me, my name is Christopher Pape, publisher and founder of PARK. I’ve had the honor and pleasure to be in the regional print industry for 15 years – as not only the youngest Editor-in-Chief of a magazine in NYC in 2011 (at the age of 27), but also as a publisher of a once-storied print title. Those experiences, in combination with the upbringing of having a father whose profession as a lyricist, novelist and screenwriter and my mother and maternal grandmother’s deep love of culture, opera and the Italian language led me, and gave me a sense of pride, in loving the literary world. So, you might be asking yourself, why another magazine? Aren’t magazines dead? Isn’t everything digital? Well, we don’t think so! And I hope you saw the difference with PARK, as compared to our illustrious competitors, even before you opened these pages. Yes, we are the only complimentary magazine in NYC that is mailed directly to your mailboxes. No other magazine in the city is doing what PARK has dedicated itself to doing – reaching you, our wonderful reader, directly in your home. As my talented Editor-in-Chief, Julie Sagoskin has written, we have a world-class lineup of editorial and creative contributors that even some national magazines would be jealous of having. And, without rehashing what she said, I want to briefly thank them all for making this possible. In addition, I want to thank my wonderful sales team, who has worked passionately and relentlessly, to secure some of the best names in beauty, real estate, fashion and art advertisers. I hope you enjoy these pages as much or more as we enjoyed putting them together. Thank you for picking up the magazine, opening these pages and sharing the journey with us. I invite you to share your comments with me directly at: christopher@parkmagazineny.com See you in December! P

Tom Ford, Adam Mosseri and Anna Wintour were the event’s Honorary Chairs. Eleanor Lambert, the legendary fashion publicist, started the Met Gala in 1948 to raise funds for the department. The Gala, New York’s answer to the Oscars, has raised over $186 million since Wintour took over from Diana Vreeland in 1995. The Costume Institute will present a two-part exhibition titled In America: A Lexicon of Fashion and In America: An Anthology of Fashion. These shows celebrate the 75th Anniversary of The Costume Institute, a collection of over 33,000 items sampling fashion from the 15th century to the present. Anna Wintour Costume Center The Met Gala marked the opening of part one of the exhibition,

Lili Buffett, Gillian Hearst & Amory McAndrew

which features 80 ensembles that define American fashion, on display in the Anna Wintour Costume Center. jewels. The evening was a celebration of KUSAMA: Cosmic Nature, the exhibition featuring installations by artist Yayoi Kusama that is open through October 31st. Veuve Clicquot hosted the champagne hour for guests including Nicky Hilton Rothschild, Brooke Shields, Karlie Kloss, Alek Wek, Prabal Gurung, Cristina Cuomo, Nacho Figueras and Delfina Blaquier and others of that ilk and stripe. Kusama recently collaborated with the brand to design the new vintage bottles with her signature dots, bright colors, and artistic style— spreading a message of joy, hope, and optimism. N’est-ce pas? That kind of line of work seemed a little insignificant in light of what was happening. Everything started turning around when we started visiting people at the Javits Center, the hospital and the armory; when they started saying ‘the Yankees are here, the Yankees are here,’ and it gave people a smile in that moment. “IT’S IMPORTANT AS A PLASTIC SURGEON TO HAVE INTEGRITY AND PROFESSIONALISM.”

“I

always knew that I wanted to work in New York because I know it is where the best plastic surgeons come,” says Plastic Surgeon, Dr. John Mesa. Now, Dr. Mesa is within that group of top plastic surgeons himself. Mesa, originally from Colombia, came to the United States to take on surgical training and is known as a superstar in his field – and on social media. This hard-working, bi-lingual doctor who studied at Harvard, is also a triple fellowship-trained plastic surgeon who specializes in cosmetic plastic surgery for the face, neck and body using only local anesthesia, making recovery faster and easier for the patient. “I did research and fellowships and started working in New Jersey,” explains Dr. Mesa. “I also wanted to work in Miami, so M A N H AT TA N ’ S P R E M I E R E I wound up opening a third PLASTIC SURGEON office there as well.” As the proud owner of B Y A I DA TO R O three successful practices, Dr. Mesa believes that the pandemic has dramatically affected the world of plastic surgery as patients have had more downtime to recover. “Those who are doing more video calls see themselves all the time on camera. This has made them more conscious of things they would like done.” Although Mesa specializes in a variety of cosmetic plastic surgery procedures, his main specialty is Buccal Fat Removal.

Dr. Mesa

Buccal Fat Removal involves the removal of fullness from the cheeks, helping clients to achieve a supermodel like look. This procedure has grown in popularity popular due to social media filters, where many admire the chiseled cheeks of the Kardashian’s. “It’s the American dream to become famous, and now everyone can look like they are,” says Mesa. “I have everyone from those in their late teens to their 50’s and above coming for this procedure.” Aside from Buccal, Dr. Mesa also offers minimally invasive procedures from the neck up, such as facial contouring. The chin liposuction and face tightening, including the jowl area, are touched with tiny incisions under local anesthesia. Face and neck lifts are also done under local anesthesia, allowing the patient to remain wide awake. Using local anesthesia ensures that the procedure remains as painless as possible, while helping to relieve anxiety for patients as they can avoid side effects from sedation or anesthesia, as well as feeling tired or developing hematoma. Patients are also able to take care of themselves easily post-procedure. When it comes to advising patients, Dr. Mesa gives his honest opinion, something he believes is as important as his highly trained hands. “For example, if you have high cheekbones, you need fillers, not buccal fat removal. “It’s important as a plastic surgeon to have integrity and professionalism.” For more stories and videos, check out doctor.mesa2. “MAKE SURE YOU ARE GOING TO SOMEONE WHO IS BOARD CERTIFIED BY THE AMERICAN BOARD OF PLASTIC SURGERY’’

Dr. Rubinstein

hen it comes to making it in Miami, plastic surgeon Dr. Adam J. Rubinstein has indeed made it to the top – by making his patients look like the best version of themselves – or better. This native New Yorker, who trained all over the country in general surgery, from craniofacial to pediatric and hand surgery, has now been in practice in South Florida for almost two decades. While Dr. Rubinstein’s practice is 95 percent cosmetic for both the face and body, he also does a small amount of reconstructive work. Although Miami has become a popular spot

for plastic surgery due to the surge of surgeries that take place there and top surgeons in the area, many also come for the cost effectiveness compared to New York, as well as discount clinics. This dedicated doctor, who is as passionate about being a patient advocate as he is about his plastic procedures, has even been sued by other doctors in his pursuit to educate others on the unsafe practices that continue to take place. When it comes to choosing the surgeon for you, Dr. Rubinstein has one important piece of advice: “Make sure you are going to someone who is board certified by the American Board of

Plastic Surgery, not just the Board of Cosmetic Surgery.” Dr. Rubinstein is a rocking social media star, with a humorous series on his Instagram page called #itsnotallthesame. The latest video, entitled Mail Order Plastic Surgery, features an infomercial type call number where you can order whatever procedure you want over the phone. According to Dr. Rubinstein, all these videos are meant to drive home the point that you must be careful and educate people. “These are funny videos, but they have a serious message behind them.” From educating to helping others, Dr. Rubinstein is always at the forefront. While being forced to close during the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr. Rubinstein started a ventilator donation program and website entitled “Take A Breather,” which helped support ventilator donations nationwide. Now, his practice is busier than ever before performing all kinds of procedures, but what sets this passionate plastic surgeon apart is his attention to detail, which includes staying on top of the latest, most cutting-edge technology. “I am always ahead of the curve and make sure to have the newest treatments that offer less invasive techniques and better results. We offer neck procedures as well as skin tightening treatments that are easy and painless.” His main priority for both women and his growing clientele of men, continues to be ensuring that patients achieve the slimming or sexy results they are looking for while staying safe. THE INTRIGUE

THE MET GALA THIS YEAR AUGURS more drama, more anticipation, and more intrigue than ever in its 73-year history. It has long been regarded not only as the party of the year, but also as one of the most successful and renowned fundraising galas the world has ever seen. BY GEORGE WAYNE

SCENE

In other words, The Met Gala is the Super Bowl of fashion parties. And since there was no Met Gala in 2020 for the first time since the desert years of the early 1970’s when it paused, the need remains for the still legendary mistress of the zeitgeist-- Anna Wintour -- to show the world how to throw one of the first extravaganzas of the postpandemic era. All eyes from fashionistas all over the world will be on an autumn night in New York and the dawn of the most important social season in eons. More so for Anna Wintour, this year’s Met Gala will also be her re-coronation after the annus horribilis that was 2020. She returns to show she’s held on to her crown after the most bruising year as fashion’s supreme imperatrix to remain on top of her pedestal. Wintour faced down a scathing memoir that detailed her savagery from one of her closest confidantes, Andre Leon Talley, to a mass brain drain when some of the most cherished Condé Nast creative minds across the globe were seemingly let go en masse, thus leaving the brand a shell of its former creative fecund. She’s dealt with picket signs and demonstrations from unionized staff from the hallowed New Yorker screaming outside her mansionette in the West Village for better pay. And yet, she emerges from the ruins of Condé Nast with an even grander and more important

title. She is still here: Vogue Editor in Chief, US Artistic Director and Global Content Advisor of Condé Nast. And so, rest assured that the 2021 version of The Met Gala will be Anna Wintour’s biggest nose snub to all her haters. And, oh so much fascinating intrigue to consider. ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’ is the most banalest thesis title ever in the history of any Costume Institute exhibition. All we want to know is this: Will Gwyneth Paltrow even be invited at all? She›s famous for saying, ‘’I’m never going again,’’ after trolling her Met Gala experience of 2016. Will Anna Wintour invite her? Will Gwyneth eat humble pie and show up for the first time in five years with her new husband Brad Falchuk? Karlie Kloss once said that ‘’getting an invitation to The Met Gala is like being transported to another universe.’’ For sure FOMO will be fomenting this season as many a boldface name frets to see if they’ve made the cut for this year’s Met Gala. Raul Avila, the Event Designer of this uber galactic charity since 2007, will have devised the most spectacular red-carpet setting. For sure, it will be the most wired Instagram-ready Met Gala ever. After all, the CEO of Instagram Adam Mosseri is one of this year’s Honorary Chairs which can only mean he’s the one footing the bill for what is shaping up to be the most monumen-

Smoke…bedlam... mirrors and the paparazzi strobe lights! Anyone who's ever climbed the steps of the famous Metropolitan Museum Of New York to the Met Gala red carpet will attest-- It's everything!

tal bacchanal Anna Wintour has ever orchestrated. The Vogue press office makes it clear that The Met Gala is where Wintour invites ‘’the boundary-pushing stars of fashion, entertainment, and politics that have ever graced the covers of Vogue.’’ So, can you imagine the peacocking that’s going to take place on that red carpet when Billy Porter encounters his new update in Lil Nas X? And who will Kim Kardashian show up with? Will she do a Beyonce after her scandalous Met Gala night of 2014? Beyonce was still so embarrassed about that incident that she skipped the following year and then arrived solo in 2016 in this eye-popping latex Givenchy number that had everyone rubbernecking. Will Billie Eilish give her ‹stans› full-on Marilyn Monroe reincarnate in some Dior couture? Will Timothee Chalamet arrive in a full-on Tom Ford tailored metallic suit as he did for the Cannes red carpet this past spring? And can he top the post-millennial look of Zayn Malik in 2018? Will Lady Gaga be awarded Anna Wintour’s most coveted slot of her A++ invitees and be allowed to arrive last? Or will that coveted slot go to Rihanna and her boyfriend ASAP Rocky? And what will Nikki Minaj do when she sees Cardi B for the first time since their red-carpet catfight a few seasons back at the Plaza Hotel? Will Nikki Minaj even be invited? And is Anna’s first statement that the fashion whirl is now full-on greenwashing? This

ONE REMEMBERS MOST DIANA’S STILLUNMATCHED AURA OF GENUINE CLASS, SOPHISTICATION AND HOW WARM AND ACCESSIBLE SHE WAS-EVEN TO ME is with the news that this Met Gala will be the first to have a 100% plant-based menu curated by a legion of star chefs led by Chef Marcus Samuelsson. The first time Anna Wintour ever attended any Met Gala was in 1989. She arrived looking like the wide-eyed ingenue she was for ‘The Age of Napoleon: Costume Revolution to Empire, 1789-1815’ and dressed in a simple short black skirt and an embellished gold top wrapping her neck to sleeves. Back then she was still a minor fashion editor at New York magazine. By 1995 she was large and in charge and the first year she hosted The Met Gala with her two closest fashion designer friends Gianni Versace and Karl Lagerfeld. Somehow, she decided not to host in 1996 when Liz Tilberis of Harper’s Bazaar was more than happy to take up the reigns. And Liz called on her ultimate calling card-- the one and only Princess Diana of Wales-- to host that year as Honorary Chair. On a personal note, that Met Gala of 1996 with Liz Tilberis was the only Met Gala I was ever invited to. And I will never forget that moment Princess Diana waltzed through the Great Hall of the Met and took our every breath away. One remembers most Diana’s still-unmatched aura of genuine class, sophistication and how warm and accessible she was-even to me! I remember my moment most because of the stunning and unforgettable choker of pearls, clasped by a huge blue sapphire, that graced her

It was the Bob Mackie clad Cher in 1974 and the first Hollywood legend to ever attend a Met Gala– who was truly instrumental in taking the press coverage to the next level. neck. The frock was simple, but for the unforgettable Princess of Wales, that bit of Windsor jewelry was all she needed. And Anna Wintour, she may never admit, has regretted that faux pas of 1996 and of not hosting her sophomore gala. Ever since she has made sure to hold the reigns and set the imprimatur for the charity galas of all galas. But it was that other legendary Vogue imperatrix, Diana Vreeland who, in 1972, truly set the template for The Met Gala as we know it today. Ms. Vreeland was the grand dame who took this annual ball to the next level. In 1974, when Cher became the first bonafide Hollywood icon to grace The Met Gala with her presence in a beaded Bob Mackie jumpsuit-- the Associated Press, Reuters and every newswire in the world stood up and took notice about this Met Gala. Ms. Vreeland’s most iconic Met Gala remains ‘Yves Saint Laurent and Diaghilev: Costumes and Designs of the Ballets Russes’ in 1978. But by 1976 Vreeland already had tongues wagging after she infused the Great Hall of the Met with wafts of expensive Chanel eau de parfum, a scent created in 1924 (‘Cuir de Russie’). The Vreeland Met Gala years were ruled by the leading society swans of the day. There is a famous image from 1983 of Yves Saint Laurent and the ultimate swan of the era, Jacqueline de Ribes with her elongated neck clad in a quadruple strand, a-la-

Diana- of the most exquisite pearls seated next to designer Bill Blass chain-smoking his way through dinner in the Temple of Dendur. Let’s just say kids, that was #DefinitiveVintageMetGala! The Diana Vreeland years were the cloistered eras of true high society all gathering for a great cause and led by the likes of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Pat Buckley, Nan Kempner, Ann Slater, and the visiting Imelda Marcos types. It was the era of the dowager socialite in haute couture who saved her best look for the annual ball to benefit the Met Museum’s Costume Institute. That’s the ultimate denouement for the Diana Vreeland years of The Met Gala. And when all is said and done Diana Vreeland and Anna Wintour owe it all to the original fashion legend, Eleanor Lambert. None of us would remain inspired by the still undervalued and under-appreciated legacy of Eleanor Lambert. She remains the original fashion influencer icon. Anna Wintour must one day come to adhere to the fact that Eleanor Lambert invented The Met Gala. When Eleanor Lambert decided to stage a midnight supper in December of 1948 (the very same month Prince Charles was born and christened at Buckingham Palace!), she asked her closest friends to cough up

$50 to show up for her very first Met Ball, as it was known then, at the Waldorf Astoria hotel. Eleanor Lambert will be popping bubbles from her grave to know that one ticket to the 2021 Met Gala will cost Anna Wintour’s friends $30,000! Maybe in 2022, Anna Wintour will do the right thing and grant due homage and dedicate next year’s gala to Eleanor Lambert. She will have that to ponder after September 14. For now, the intrigue will be who are the 600 chosen to be part of her don’t-call-it-a-comeback-party? Who will flail and who will flourish on the most important red carpet of 2021? Who will set the narrative for the zeitgeist of future fashion? And have us agog-- for days--and gagging kudos on the Insta, the TikTok and the Twittersphere? Who is going to tell us it’s like the Roaring 20’s all over again? Will this Met Gala be even more of a campy and kitschy extravaganza as the over-the-top galas of 2004, 2008 and especially 2019? When Billy Porter arrived hoisted on a throne? One fact we know is that Demi Lovato, who raged in 2014 that The Met Gala is ‘’fake and sucking the fashion industry’s d---’’, won’t ever have to worry about being invited to any future Anna Wintour extravaganza. Let the games begin! P

MAYBE IN 2022, ANNA WINTOUR WILL DO THE RIGHT THING AND GRANT DUE HOMAGE AND DEDICATE NEXT YEAR’S GALA TO ELEANOR LAMBERT. Ruffled feathers? Hah! This Met Gala Queen still rules the roost. Anna Wintour arrives in 2019.

SUZANNE SOMERS IS A ROLE MODEL for us all. At 74, she looks and feels terrific. A well-known and respected authority on health and wellness, Suzanne and her 85-year-old husband, Alan Hamel, are showing us a new way to age. They have sex twice a day. Several days each week the couple hold live Facebook and Instagram sessions from their 92-acre Palm Springs compound, sharing stories on Hollywood, health, family and more. BY R. COURI HAY BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOS BY RON GALELLA

COVER STORY

“I EAT AS THOUGH MY LIFE DEPENDS UPON IT, BECAUSE I BELIEVE IT DOES,” Suzanne has been ahead of her time consistently throughout her 50-year career. In the late 1970s, she created the now-iconic role of ditzy Chrissy Snow in the sitcom Three’s Company, and then was fired when she dared to ask ABC for pay commensurate with that of the male cast members. She never looked back, forging ahead to build a highly successful career in multiple fields. A prolific author, Suzanne has written 27 books, 14 of them New York Times bestsellers, focusing on health and helping readers to find products, education and services to improve their lives. Covering topics such as mental health, weight loss, nutrition, beauty, integrative cancer protocols and more, her books have been translated into many languages throughout the world. A savvy serial entrepreneur, Suzanne was one of the very first celebrity entrepreneurs to understand and apply the power of infomercials and shopping on television. She introduced her weight loss program, beauty items, apparel, jewelry and personal fitness products to consumers on Home Shopping Network in 1992, quickly becoming one of the network’s top-selling brand names. Over the years, she expanded her product offerings to include vitamins and supplements. Suzanne’s famous 1990s sensation, the ThighMaster®, is still as popular as ever, with over 10 million sold worldwide. She has since developed thousands

of products in multiple categories that can be found on her website. Finding opportunity in adversity, Suzanne completely changed her lifestyle after a cancer diagnosis in 2000, and now follows a strictly organic diet. “I eat as though my life depends upon it, because I believe it does,” she says. Her further research revealed that in addition to the food supply, toxins are also present in commercial skin care and hair care products, as well as in cosmetics. So, she developed her own line of organic, toxin-free beauty products for hair, skin and nails. Suzanne introduced mainstream America to bioidentical hormones (BHRT) and continues to educate women and men on the life-saving benefits of this natural alternative to help turn the clock back – from the inside out. She follows a detailed regime of alternative and integrative medicine, including supplements, enzymes, peptides and more. After Suzanne was fired from Three’s Company in 1980, her husband Alan declared that they would never work for anyone else again, and ever since the duo has run a lean, efficient company, one of America’s greatest success stories of a female owned-and-operated business. Caroline Somers, their daughter-in-law, has been president of SOMERS Companies for 30 years, overseeing product development, web sales and marketing.

COVER STORY

“I LIKE THE WAY I LOOK. I LIKE THE WAY I FEEL. I LIKE MY ENERGY. I HAVE WISDOM. I HAVE PERSPECTIVE, AND I CAN TELL YOU THAT AGING CAN BE SO INCREDIBLE IF YOU KNOW HOW TO APPROACH IT. In short, Suzanne Somers was and continues to be a trailblazer, establishing herself as a brand decades before modern-day influencers like the Kardashians latched onto the concept. How to age successfully Aging is an inevitability, and we’ve come to expect that we’re going to get sick as we get old. Suzanne Somers challenges us to entertain the idea that we can age without illness, that we can live out our lives with vitality, keeping our minds and bones in top condition. “I have to say that since I embraced health, I have never enjoyed life more,” she says. “I like the way I look. I like the way I feel. I like my energy. I have wisdom. I have perspective, and I can tell you that aging can be so incredible if you know how to approach it. It takes a little bit of work. It’s about health; about shifting your thinking and understanding what it is that’s making us sick and how we can combat it.” Suzanne strives to view everything in life as an opportunity. When life threw her a curve with a breast cancer diagnosis over 20 years ago, she asked herself how her diet and lifestyle habits led her to play host to this disease.

Examining her lifestyle, she realized that she hadn’t been getting enough sleep, kept up a stressful schedule with long hours, partied a lot and wasn’t concerned about the chemicals in the food and beauty products she consumed. She knew nothing about hormones, which play an important role in keeping us healthy as we age. “Now that I’ve put all the pieces together, I realized I was such a likely target,” she says. Sleep, hormonal balance, eating right Each person’s body is different, but some key factors for aging successfully are eating right, getting a proper amount of sleep, and maintaining hormonal balance. “These are all connected,” Suzanne stresses. “We have to learn the language of our bodies. Itching, bitching, lack of sleep, sweating, bloating, forgetfulness, being dried up; that’s the body talking,” she says. Those symptoms are your body telling you it needs some help. “Listen to your body,” she advises. “You can’t sleep unless you balance your hormones,” she explains. Once your hormones are balanced you can start going to sleep earlier, which reduces cortisol and insulin levels, allowing weight loss.

COVER STORY

WAY I THE I LIKE I HAVE HAVE VE, AND YOU G CAN EDIBLE W HOW CH IT.

Hormones “Hormones are not just for menopausal women,” Suzanne declares. “Hormones are for all of us, they’re the juice of youth, governing every aspect of our lives and emotions and health.” If we’re cavalier about our hormones and don’t keep them balanced, it creates chaos, with sickness and emotional upheavals and stress, making it difficult to embrace life. “Perimenopause is actually a great stage of life if you have balanced hormones,” Suzanne says. “If you get your hormones back, your brain thinks you’re reproductive, everything is working nicely, but you don’t have to worry about getting pregnant,” she explains. “You can have all the fun you want.” At this phase of life, hair loses some luster, wrinkles begin to appear, and there are bloating and mood fluctuations. “I threw things!” she says. “I can’t believe I threw things; I’m so even-tempered now. I’m so wonderful to live with now.” However, perimenopause is the phase when many women develop breast cancer; it’s when Suzanne was diagnosed. Now she wishes she’d started on hormones in her thirties. “As we decline, we can now fill the tank with bioidentical hormones; not too much, not too little – exactly; optimal health. It’s the most exciting thing that’s ever happened. It means that we can remain even all the way through, and as you get older you just need a little more.”

“HORMONES ARE FOR ALL OF US, THEY’RE THE JUICE OF YOUTH, GOVERNING EVERY ASPECT OF OUR LIVES AND EMOTIONS AND HEALTH.” And balanced hormones help to maintain a normal sex drive. “When you don’t have hormones, you don’t care about sex. I mean, you can do it, but you’d rather have a smoothie.” She knows, she’s been there. “I didn’t like being there. I used to really like it, and I had three miserable years.” Eating right What we eat is so important, and nature provided us with herbs and spices to make food more flavorful. Thyme, rosemary, tarragon, mint, turmeric, chives, cayenne, cumin, and cinnamon are nature’s antioxidants. “It’s as though nature knew we’d be bombarded with free radicals and chemicals coming into our bodies all the time. Bringing these antioxidants into your food helps eliminate free radicals.” If she goes to a restaurant whose food is not organic, she later takes a course of antioxidants to counterbalance the effects of her meal. A simple change in your diet, taking in omega-3 oils like olive, flax, or coconut oil, helps to keep cell membranes pliable, allowing air and water to flow through and flush chemicals that enter the body from food or the environment. Too many malfunctioning cells can lead to diseases like cancer, from lack of nutrition, hydration, and oxygen, explains Suzanne. “We need air and water in our bodies to be more energetic.”

“WE CAN’T FILM ON WEDNESDAYS BECAUSE WE JUST MIGHT BE IN BED ALL DAY!” Suzanne also takes fish oil daily, morning and evening. “People say, ‘Fish oil, ugh! It’s something our mothers made us take, cod liver oil.’ Our mothers had wisdom!” she says, laughing. Plus, these days it tastes much better. Making simple dietary changes is easy, she says. For instance, smear an organic chicken with olive oil, rosemary and thyme (or whichever herbs you prefer), add sea salt, and cook in the oven. “When I eat this meal, I think it’s like healthy medicine I’m eating,” Suzanne gushes. “It’s just so delicious.” Wellness can be exciting You can make wellness exciting, something that you look forward to doing. “My routine is estrogen every day. That’s my happy mood,” Suzanne says. “And I’m telling you it’s nice to live with a woman who’s in a good mood every day because I didn’t used to be. So, now I know the difference.” She also applies progesterone at certain times each month, which helps to eliminate water weight. “That combination of estrogen and progesterone makes you feel really good, and there are days when you get a glint in your eye, and look at your husband and go, ‘Hello, sailor!’” she laughs. “Aging is amazing. Aging is something you should aspire to and look forward to and want.” Suzanne Somers & Alan Hamel aging beautifully At this stage in her life, Suzanne has something one can only acquire with age – wisdom. Her life’s

purpose is sharing her knowledge, teaching others of all ages how to have an active, energetic life filled with energy, vitality, health and wellness. Millions of fans and followers access this information through her books, website and social media platforms. On her social media platforms, Suzanne and Alan offer an up-close look at their daily lifestyle. Mornings start with organic coffee – in bed – with scenic views of desert mountains and herds of bighorn sheep drinking from shallow springs. They delve into their boxes of supplements to concoct gut-healthy smoothies. Every Tuesday, Suzanne gives Alan a shot in the behind - of testosterone. “We can’t film on Wednesdays because we just might be in bed ALL day!” she quips. You’ll see them take their golf cart to the organic garden. Where they come up with natural solutions for keeping the critters from eating the plants. They dance in the kitchen while Suzanne whips up one of her healthy, delicious meals. Alan often snacks on fruit and nuts, spoiling his appetite – however, you can’t argue with his health! He’s clearly doing something right. Suzanne and Alan dote on one another. They are attached at the hip and haven’t spent a night apart in decades. That might seem odd, but they are happy being always together. They consider themselves “wonderfully co-dependent.” At 5pm every night, they meet at Big Al’s Bar – a special spot on their property, where they share a tequila and chat about their day. P

SUZANNE SOMERS & ALAN HAMEL

OUR NEW YORK

Despite their West Coast ties, Suzanne Somers and Alan Hamel have spent a significant amount of time in New York City over the decades, for work and pleasure. They love the Big Apple - and its people - and the joined-at-the-hip pair were delighted to share with us their favorites things to do in New York . Read on for our fun chat: Alan Hamel: Dick Clark and I were partners, and we leased a wonderful place on Gramercy Park. As far as I’m concerned, there is no better place to live in New York than Gramercy Park, especially when they give you a key to the little park across the street. Suzanne Somers: We had a giant window overlooking the

12 | parkmagazineny.com

park and loved enjoying the changing seasons - everything from massive snow falls to thunder and lightning and rainstorms to hot summers. AH: Between 1977 and 1980 Suzanne and I were nightly regulars at Studio 54. Even when it was happening, we knew that this was going to be historic, which of course it is.

Steve Rubell owned studio 54 along with Ian Schrager, who also had a wonderful hotel called the Morgan. Steve installed us in the penthouse suite, which he filled with large bouquets of fragrant red roses. As I recall, the penthouse had two outdoor terraces and on beautiful nights we would sit there having a glass of wine while mesmerized by the spires of Manhattan. SS: The Morgan had an extensive video library, which was wonderful. We would choose a movie and they would bring it to the suite along with a giant bowl of freshly popped popcorn. Halfway through the movie, when all the popcorn was gone and I was on the verge of calling down for another bowl, there’d be a knock on the door and the bellman handed us that bowl of freshly popped popcorn I didn’t even have to ask for. That is service! She said while Laughing. Our Favorite Restraunts SS: We love Patsy’s Italian, real deal Italian, Dominick’s, Altro Paradiso, and La Grenouille. Oh, and Balthazar! AH: Rao’s is a HUGE favorite! The first time we were there, many, many, years ago, the waiter came to the table and I requested the wine list. He looked at me, and with a heavy New York accent, he said, “I am the wine list. Do you want red or white?” Another evening, our dear, dear, old friend Don Rickles was at Rao’s and two wise guys walked in, impeccably dressed in gray silk suits with just enough cuff, the perfect Windsor knot, and every hair in place. Plus, they were not smiling. Don got everyone there to loudly hum the Godfather theme. Alan Laughs. We thought they were going to “take care of” Don, but instead they broke up, their posture changed, they were laughing hysterically, and it was Don Rickles’ night. We’re also crazy about Fogo de Chão Brazilian Steakhouse, and Peter Luger’s, one of the oldest steakhouses in the U.S. Autumn in New York SS: Autumn in New York is spectacular!! Beautiful sunset skies and, occasionally, the smell of burning leaves. Everyone knows we’re on borrowed time; winter is just down the street - and it’s okay, Christmas in New York is coming. Fabulous time of the year! AH: Nothing compares to New Year’s Eve at Studio 54; nothing! Walking in, the entire floor was covered in deep shiny stuff. There were acrobats wearing skin-toned tights hanging from the ceiling doing gyrations. There were fabulously decorated trees everywhere. All the usual famous faces were there ready to party big time. The DJ worked from atop a big riser

AUTUMN IN NEW YORK IS SPECTACULAR! BEAUTIFUL SUNSET SKIES AND, OCCASIONALLY, THE SMELL OF BURNING LEAVES and perched on the riser precariously close to falling was a world-famous entertainer, oblivious to anything except the disco beat. I don’t recall what time we finally left Studio 54, but it was very late into the night - or should I say in the morning - early enough to stop at a diner for pancakes and sausages before making our way home. My Broadway Show SS: Then there was my one-woman Broadway show at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. Every night, a theater full of New Yorkers were with me every minute of my show. And what an audience! And then the people jamming 47th street at the stage door to cheer me on, post-show. What a high!! And then another major high was when the crew and chief made me an honorary member of Local One. I’m always amazed that, even today, I can’t believe I get paid for having incredible fun. Show business! AH: New Yorkers are a breed unto themselves. They are loud and boisterous and take no crap! They love the city fiercely and are very protective of its reputation. When Sinatra sings New York, New York, we all feel like New Yorkers. P

eonardo DiCaprio, Jay-Z and Beyonce, Bill Gates, and Harrison Ford are among the rich and richer who have made the 20-hour trip from NYC to Phuket, Thailand. It’s a long flight, even on a private jet, but once you touch down, the magic carpet rolls out. We were met by a white-uniformed greeter from the Amanpuri, who escorted us to a black chauffeured BMW that whisked us to the hotel. Looking out the window, you see a poor third-world country streaming by until you swing into the long, palm-lined drive to the resort’s enchanted garden; all the teak wood buildings are built in the traditional Thai style with whimsical peaked, winged roofs. The architecture echoes the Royal Palace compound in Bangkok where King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit Kitiyakara live. The manager and his sarong-wearing staff meet us, bowing in the time-honored greeting. Here you will find a collection of the world’s savvy cognoscenti who are called “Aman Junkies”, because of their loyalty to the brand. This list includes Jason Statham and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, and their six children when they were still married.

Pansea Beach The Amanpuri was built by legendary hotelier Adrian Zecha in 1988. It was the first in the Aman Group of hotels and resorts that now span the world from the Turks & Caicos and Bali to Sri Lanka and Tibet; Russian billionaire Vladislav Doronin now owns the company. I wandered down hand-hewn stone steps, surrounded by greenery to a tiny rock peninsula on the property. This idyllic spot, edged with swaying palm trees, overlooks Pansea Beach. The soundtrack was provided by a gentle wind and white-capped waves rolling picturesquely against the boulders that create this stone jetty. A young Thai girl led us to the outermost table, one of only four, perched eight feet above the sand and sea. She held back a simple wooden chair and placed a freshly pressed white linen napkin on our laps. The menu was something you would expect at Sant Ambroeus, not on a rock in Thailand. The chef proves masterful and the cuisine an unexpected delight; healthy, sophisticated, and scrumptious. With a majestic palm tree acting as our umbrella, I looked out over the multi-blue-hued sea, relaxed and comforted, this table symbolizes the exquisite experience that is the Amanpuri. Celebrity Haven Every detail at this flagship hotel is elegantly curated, from the fragrant cool towels and the refreshing hibiscus teas that await you at every stop, to the refined taste exercised in the execution of the pavilions and

reception areas. The most extravagant way to stay here is in one of the 30 private villas that spread out over the hills looking down at the ocean. These range from a two-bedroom compound with a private pool and separate pavilions for dining and lounging for $4,700 a day to a grand 8-bedroom house with a live-in housekeeper and chef for $10,500 a night. Billionaires, the jet-set and stars like “I WANDERED DOWN Pierce Brosnan, Jean-Claude Van STONE STEPS TO A DINING Damme and One Direction’s Harry TABLE ON A TINY ROCK Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Zayn PENINSULA.” Malik, and Louis Tomlinson have all slept here as well as scores of others who don’t want to see their names in print. The management has been known to send out boats filled with security to bribe and shoo away the paparazzi who train their long lenses on their guests. Not long ago they spied on Brangelina and reported that their

son Pax had hurt his leg while jet skiing. When one of these villas goes on the market, they fetch 10 to 35 million dollars. Seaside Pavilions For a romantic rendezvous, I’d suggest staying in one of their 40 glamorous stand-alone Pavilions that face the sea and are near the beach, bar, pool and restaurants. These rooms are spacious and well thought out; they also boast their outdoor dining and lounging pagoda. The bedroom is a sleek dark wood cocoon with sliding teak doors and windows that either seal you in or open to the views of the sea and the tropical gardens that surround you. The twin bath and dressing rooms make it easy for a couple to get ready simultaneously. Every day there is a surprise, the Buddha in your bedroom is draped with a fresh frangipani lei, floating orchids fill your bathtub that is surrounded by lit can-

dles, there is a package on your pillow bearing a gift: a white silk scarf, white orchid plants punctuate your room, and fresh fruit and cookies are always left on a tray. Service is silent and they time it so you never see it happen. Buabok & Nama Restaurants Although you can go into Phuket to eat, it’s easier to dine at the resort. Although there is swift room service, we started every day with breakfast in the main pavilion facing the Olympicsized, black-tiled pool, which is surrounded by grey chaise lounges. The food here is on a par with The Carlyle in NYC or The Rosewood in London, with freshly brewed coffees and teas and homemade bread and jams. There are lots of healthy choices; try the fresh fruit smoothies, egg white frittatas, or the open-faced Tai omelet. That said, I couldn’t help but miss the lavish buffet breakfasts you find in European hotels, but the Amanpuri is far quieter than a normal five-star hotel and you never wait for anything. You can choose from three separate restaurants and cuisines. The Babok restaurant serves Tai food but if you want a hamburger, it’s done just like at home. Avra, their Italian restaurant, offers the perfect pasta and a heavenly Tagliatelle lamb ragu. Nama serves Japanese fare; order all the sushi, the grilled yellowfin tuna, and the tangy hot and sour soup with a floating shrimp. To work off the calories head to the hotel’s state-of-the-art gym which sits on top of a bluff. Every treadmill offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the sea and long stretches of beach. You can hire a trainer to put you through your paces or there’s a yoga master who conducts a class in the mornings. Sweat in Nirvana. Recover in the elegant spa. It is a quiet oasis and all they want to do is pamper you. Order up: The Royal Thai massage, invigorating facials with local herbs, or expert mani-pedis. My favorite treatment was the foot massage with Andaman sea salt and roasted coconuts. After lunch, nap in the shade, then rent jet skis and go exploring. They offer all the watersports here, from snorkeling and waterskiing to sailing and paragliding. As I swam in the sea it was hard to envision the tsunami that hit the area 17 years ago in 2004. Thankfully there are no signs left of the devastation that it wrought.

Teahouse Ritual Between 4:30 and 5:30 pm, there is a not-to-bemissed ritual in the teahouse overlooking the pool. A gaggle of maidens makes traditional Thai pancakes, the size of silver dollars, over a charcoal stove while a musician softly plays an indigenous instrument. These tiny treats are beyond yummy; try the banana, mango, and chocolate, or go rogue and have one made with sweet onions. They melt in your mouth so you have to be careful not to eat too many. The ladies also serve cold ginger tea with mango juice and offer pumpkin and banana bread and coconut cookies if you want to switch things up. Luckily, tea time is exactly one hour or you’d need to wear a caftan to the beach. We went swimming at sunset; the water was warm and the sun’s last rays reflected off the ocean as we body surfed and played in the waves like happy seals. Later, the lapping waves lulled us to sleep in our beds. Amanpuri, the place dreams are made. aman.com (66)76-324-333 Please check the websites for COVID Regulations and restrictions. P aman.com

Ziplining at Hanuman decided to go on an eco-adventure and headed to Phuket’s ultimate jungle experience, ziplining at Hanuman. I put on my harness, strapped on my helmet and climbed 30 minutes up steep, rocky terrain to a ladder that led to a platform on a tree. Before I could say wait or stop, I was hooked onto a cable and pushed off a landing from the tallest tree I’ve ever seen. I was too petrified to scream. Then presto, I landed effortlessly on a platform wrapped around another gargantuan tree. It was exhilarating and made me feel like Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones. I continued to zip around the jungle, and when we had to zoom straight down, I felt a lump in my throat, but in truth anyone from 13 to 80 could enjoy this experience. Once out of the jungle I charted the Amanpuri’s yacht and sped off to the James Bond Island where Roger Moore filmed The Man with The Golden Gun. flyinghanuman.com

Tiger Kingdom You have two choices at Tiger Kingdom: suspend good judgment and enter a caged area with a large group of playful tigers or stay behind the bars. Naturally, we went in. For 2,500 baht (90 dollars), these keepers allow you to pose and pet three sizes of Indochinese Tigers, small, medium and large and when I say large, I mean 400 pounds. The keepers ease you into a tightly fenced area through double-gated cages. That’s when I should have turned around, but I pressed on. The experience with the baby cubs was cute, the teens were thrilling but the parents were scary, especially when a gang of six monster-sized cats started fighting in one corner of the pen while we were sitting 20 feet away stroking their grandfather. The two trainers carried slim sticks and that was it between us and them. We escaped quickly but not before we took a stream of selfies holding the tiger’s

tail. On the way out, when I jokingly asked if anyone had ever been killed or mauled the owner said, “No, but a man did get bit in the leg last year and is coming back to face his fears.” Great news! It was exciting but I’m not sure I’d have risked it if I’d heard that story first. We went at 5pm and stuck around to watch them tear through huge slabs of raw meat at 6 for dinner. I would suggest going right after breakfast when, hopefully, they’re feeling less frisky. I felt safer visiting a family of gorillas in the jungles of Rwanda where we weren’t allowed to touch them, and the gamesmen carried machine guns. tigerkingdom.com Bangla Boxing Stadium On the other side of the coin is the Banga Tai Boxing Stadium. In less than 8 hours, twenty-two people had created a dozen linen shirts and were ready for my suit’s first fittings. he world of Manhattan real estate has shifted dramatically since the onset of Covid-19. NYC just surpassed San Francisco as having the most expensive rents in the country, while many buyers face lower prices resulting in daunting bidding wars. According to top Manhattan real estate expert Lisa Lippman, #1 agent at Brown Harris Stevens, pricing and timing are everything. With more than $1 billion in sales under her belt in the last three years, Lisa knows better than most how to navigate the new real estate reality. “I think the biggest challenge facing Manhattan buyers is thinking about living in close quarters for the future,” said Lippman. “People think more about the space they’re living in - more about extra spaces for offices, exercise and out-

door areas. I’m not sure if we will ever stop thinking about those things again.” While buyers may have some advantage in a softer Manhattan market, Lippman says there are certain elements sellers should accentuate to get better results. “When marketing their homes, sellers should highlight the pros of their apartment in terms of private spaces, extra spaces and closets that may turn into offices or mini gyms.” Although NYC suffered an economic hit during the height of the pandemic, Lippman is optimistic about the future. “I’m seeing many people come back to New York to buy pied-á-terres, and I’m also seeing a lot of people who had moved to the suburbs to raise their children come back as empty nesters.” New York’s newly revived culi-

nary, arts and cultural scenes are also drawing newer and returning New Yorkers. Lippman’s top piece of advice to her clients in any market - whether buying, selling, or renting - is to envision where they want to end up. “People often get caught up in emotional details but if they stay focused, they will make a deal where the property was meant to trade.” What has surprised Ms. Lippman most of all about navigating the new normal is, according to her, not much of a surprise at all. “New York is resilient. The people rebound, the commerce rebounds and people have confidence, pride and sheer joy in this wonderful city.” P bhsusa.com/lisalippman

Who actually cares if it’s a Buyer’s Market or a Seller’s Market?

n the 32 years that I’ve been a broker in New York City, I have seen many market cycles. History shows that events of magnitude like September 11th, the Great Financial Crisis of 2008, and now Covid-19 pose challenges when navigating New York real estate. Buying and selling in these unpredictable times may require one to quiet the noise of the media. Is it a “Buyer’s Market” or a “Seller’s Market”? Who actually cares? Supply and demand are the big factors that determine absorption. In September 2020, NYC had about 16.3 months of inventory; today, we have about 6 months. This could be a sign we are trending towards a normalized market. Simple advice for sellers: Price is most important. An experienced, data-driven, and honest real estate agent can help. Don’t give in to the greed of agents touting prices of yesterday only to get your home exclusive. We can’t make up the market! Price aggressively, but fairly. Right now, a seller can be bold, price low and allow the efficiency of the market to find the true value. Reflecting on the last two months with $70 million in deals, almost every property had more than one offer, with some capturing multiple

offers several hundreds of thousands over the asking price. For buyers: Please don’t wait. Get out there, look and buy - but find a patient, knowledgeable and well-respected real estate agent to educate you. Apartments are not like a stock or your favorite dress; they are homes that, for better or worse, elicit a lot of emotion. This is why real estate appreciates faster than it deflates. Get educated, lock in a cheap mortgage, and stretch to buy as much as possible. Focus on location, but don’t expect a steal. On a personal note, Covid-19 has served as a reminder that life is too short. You only get this moment once and you should enjoy every day. Cherish your family and friends. Work hard daily and enjoy life. If you want a new home, buy it. One of the most enjoyable and fulfilling things in life is having a place that makes you feel safe. NYC has afforded me the opportunity to help people across the globe find their precious homes. There is no greater city. She remains the financial and cultural capital of the world. Our resilience seems to be a way of life for us New Yorkers! P

We plug in the address and we are transported to someone’s unique world they have created behind closed doors. Arriving at Suzanne Rheinstein’s serene California abode was the ultimate passport. I knew we had to get to work, yet all I wanted was to plunge in that lap pool and gaze at the Santa Ynez mountains.

had only met Stacey Bewkes for a couple of minutes when I had the idea for our video series and wanted her to be my partner in it. I literally signed a book for her at a local store, (where we were introduced) and then as I drove home, the concept of filming designers in their own homes downloaded itself into my brain. Of course, I already followed Stacey’s much-revered blog Quintessence and I knew how respected she was by the design community. And I could see that she knew how to work in Final Cut, as she had posted a video story capturing my former editor at House & Garden at her home in Rhode Island. Between the two of us we already knew many of the top interior designers around the world: from shoots, dinner parties and events. “We know how smart and fearless and fun they are, but so many only see their work and that’s not enough,” I told her as I crossed my own threshold. “Two dimensional shots of their work in magazines only can offer so much. Let’s break the barrier,” she added excitedly. “And give design a voice,” I added, knowing we both did not have to say anything more: we were all in, even if we didn’t know the town where the other lived. Our shared intent was enough. We quickly made a list of our first top ten asks: some were already friends while others were admittedly reaches. We divided the list up between us and within an hour we were already texting - the first of thousands to one other- that everyone had said yes. And so it began: filming at first in our hometowns of Connecticut, New York, Nantucket…but as the views and subscribers increased so

When I heard that designer Bunny Williams and husband, antiques dealer, John Rosselli had purchased and renovated a new Manhattan apartment, I knew we had to immediately visit! We had captured Bunny back at her iconic Connecticut home and pool house when the series just debuted, so it was exciting to see her indomitable take on city living. Bunny made every square inch her own, from layering the flowers, the walls and creating as many cozy reading areas as possible.

did the distance, we traveled from them: to Tangier, Cartagena and Paris. And our support rippled expectedly back: we walked down a street in Charleston and a woman told us how much she loved the series. I sat next to a priest in an airplane on the way to Rome who recognized me. We had comments from places as far away as Poland and Brazil telling us how these videos mattered in their lives. We celebrated 10,000 overall views and then a one hundred thousand. Then a million monthly views. The designers themselves began approaching us, telling us, how they loved how we could reveal their silverware drawers, clothing closets, gardens and paint color mistakes. There was no page count that could cap the tours as in the case with magazines: we could make the videos any length we wanted, and our biggest criticism was that people wanted them longer. We did our own marketing, editing, social media, driving and travel arrangements. We shoved power bars into our mouths while inputting in the next destination into our GPS. I always drove and Stacey navigated. We quizzed our children about their homework along the way and obsessed about the next houses we wanted to visit when we saw something delectable posted on Instagram. We never turned the radio on or ever ran out of things to tell one another. We often said “Oh…my… god…”in exact unison as we drove up yet another spectacular driveway. Over seven years and one hundred video visits, our continued collaboration never gets old or jaded. People making their lives more beautiful and functional and emotionally fulfilling through the design of personal touches is the greatest gift we can give ourselves and our families and friends. I am excited to debut within the pages of PARK Magazine, a sneak peek into what’s ahead as we continue to debut our video visits. I have found that people love the behind-thescenes stories - whether it’s about getting wonderfully lost in Wales or what we were served for lunch in Tangier - as they do the name of a textile or a plate. In fact, it’s often the best part of the journey so I am looking forward to sharing those with you here along with Stacey’s brilliant still photography that she somehow always seems to seamlessly capture on the fly whenever she puts down her film camera. Bathroom Products That Prove We’re Not in Kansas Anymore

aking care of yourself has never been more important than now – and that includes transforming how you think about the most important rooms in your home – the bathrooms. While the pandemic has changed many things, including the plumbing industry, TOTO has remained the most trusted name in the business – and that business is booming. While TOTO has been a popular product for those who have traveled and experienced them, the toilet paper panic of 2020 led to the term bidet becoming the 20th most searched item on Amazon. As the brand gained recognition, sales exploded, even causing them to run out of inventory. In fact, the washlet bidet sold out in two weeks across the country. Bill Strang, president of TOTO’s e-commerce and private strategy, says that they continue to see strong sales. “We are looking at the world differently than we did 13 or 14 months ago,” says Strang. “Working from home has changed the paradigm of what is important to us in our lives. Plumbers are always advocating for us, as are decorators – they even put TOTO in their showrooms so that people can comprehend how this product will change their lives. That’s because when it comes to style, TOTO offers plenty of clean and streamlined designs. “I LIKE LAYERS AND LAYERS OF THINGS, WHETHER IT’S TEXTILES OR PATTERNS OR UNIQUE ART FROM TRAVELS – I LOVE WALKING INTO A ROOM AND WONDERING WHAT THE WALLS WOULD SAY IF THEY COULD TALK.

explains Alison. “People also want to see how to change their own spaces with easy renovations. Before and after transformations are always incredibly popular, especially if there is a DIY element. Another reason why these videos are resonating? “People want to know who the person behind the home is and also get a sense of the stories within the home. It doesn’t matter if it’s a 200-square-foot studio or a sprawling apartment – I don’t discriminate when it comes to the size of a home.” From CEOs to lifestyle influencers, as well as politicians, musicians, editors and even governors, Alison is always on the lookout for luxe, as well as well-lived properties of both famous and everyday people. One of her most unusual upcoming episodes involves a vintage beach bungalow modeled like the inside of a ship, which she happened to come upon during an evening walk. By pulling back the curtain, in more ways than one, Alison is able to get a sense of both home and human. Take for instance the Executive Vice President of the Aspen Institute who has a living room full of wonderful art and rare books, or a former Vogue editor, now the founder of SCOUT bags, who lives colorfully – literally – with bright green and yellow walls in her home, reflecting her own eclectic personality. She even showed off a funky gallery wall featuring childhood artwork done by her now-grown kids in gilded frames. Just another Homeworthy hack! Growing up in a 200-year-old townhouse in Georgetown, a historic neighborhood in Washington, D.C., this stylish storyteller has always had an appreciation for architecture and design. She believes her upbringing of being surrounded by old homes subliminally

influenced her love of interior design. Now, she has her own perfect paradise on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. “My husband Michael and I now have a twomonth-old son, so we recently moved into a new apartment. He is from Colorado and loves the outdoors, so I found a great apartment with a terrace and he decides to buy an outdoor shower. I took my camera and did a 30-second tour of our apartment and then ended with a shot of him taking a bathing suit shower with the New York City skyline behind him. That video has 5.2 million views on social media and it’s all because there’s a surprise element at the end.” Another thing you might find in her home? Let’s just say that Alison is a lover of layers. She finds inspiration in designers like Mario Buatta and Sister Parish, or anyone who embraces the concept of maximalism. “I like layers and layers of things, whether it’s textiles or patterns or unique art from travels – I love walking into a room and wondering what the walls would say if they could talk.” Whether it’s zipping through the streets of Vietnam on the back of a scooter or staying in an incredible hotel in India, Alison finds endless inspiration from traveling. I’ll never forget being in Udaipur, a small city in India, and staying in a palace in the middle of a lake.” This love of travel also explains why she has expanded Homeworthy into the hotel space, with many more features and profiles to come. Whether it’s in the Hamptons or the Hudson Valley, Alison prefers when a property is not only posh but more importantly, feels homey rather than like a hotel. Most recently she traveled to Palm Beach to film with a woman who lives in the Presidential Suite at the iconic Colony

Hotel for a few months of the year, describing herself as a more grown-up version of Eloise at the Plaza. “Video is a powerful medium. I’m constantly looking for a personality that pops on camera and someone who can talk about their space in a way that is compelling. I did a fascinating piece on a gentleman who has lived in a rentcontrolled, one-bedroom apartment on the Upper East Side (around the corner from Gracie Mansion) for more than 40 years. He is a musician and had incredible stories of New York from yesteryear—-people just fell in love with him and his piano playing and felt his warmth.” Some other worthy Homeworthy video subjects include a Jonathan Adler executive proudly showing off a framed article of a satirical feature from The New Yorker about him and his Hermes Birkin bag. Another feature was a fashion editorturned-Pinterest executive who displays a massive American flag in her living room that she once used as a backdrop for a Rihanna photo shoot. The before and after photos of a lifestyle influencer’s pre-war Park Avenue apartment is a truly mind-blowing renovation – you won’t want to miss this episode. And the founder of Pepper, a home decor brand, lives in an 1800s Brooklyn Heights townhouse with high ceilings covered in beautiful original frescos featuring cherubs – she designed around it, so the decor is quite modern - creating an amazing juxtaposition of old and new. From eccentric to elegant, Alison and her Homeworthy brand continue to grow to higher and more unique home heights. P homeworthyproductions.com

Galerie Gmurzynska ew York City’s Isabelle Bscher is a Swiss gallerist and art historian who studied in London and New York, where she earned a master’s degree from Sotheby’s. Isabelle grew up in the gallery, which was connected to her house in its early years in Cologne, Germany, surrounded by priceless Picassos and glittering art-world personalities. Third-Generation Woman-Owned Art Gallery Picasso, Miro, Kandinsky & Louise Nevelson Today, Isabelle lives between NYC and Zurich, Switzerland. She is the third generation to run Galerie Gmurzynska, the gallery founded by her grandmother, Antonina Gmurzynska, in Cologne, Germany. Isabelle’s mother, Krystyna Gmurzynska, took over the gallery in 1985 and in 2005 relocated the flagship to Switzerland. Today, both mother and daughter alongside brother, Lucas Bscher work together in four locations: two in Zurich, one in Zug and another in New York City. They represent major modern artists like Picasso, Miro, Kandinsky, and Louise Nevelson, as well as Karl Lagerfeld’s photography, Sylvester Stallone’s paintings, and architects Zaha Hadid and Richard Meier, who once designed their booth at Art Basel Miami.

say, Oh, my kid could have done that? So we took great masters, like Kandinsky and Twombly, and we showed why your kid couldn’t have done that.” Anh Duong Isabelle recently presented Anh Duong’s selfportrait exhibit. Duong’s solo show was dubbed “La Tentation d’Exister,” or “There is always Champagne in the Fridge.” The sumptuous show leads viewers into her life’s most intimate moments, painting herself exposed and dissociated in what she calls “still-live paintings.” As an artist whose career began by posing for photographers, Duong’s self-portraits pose questions about femininity and how women armor themselves. Duong’s artistic perspective is inspired by her interests as an actor and model as well as other artists such as her former lover Julian Schnabel, Donna Karan and John Galliano. Duong said, “When I paint myself, I use a true mirror. So, it’s a reflection of the reflection, so it’s actually the real me.” Isabelle Bscher & her dog Lolli

The gallery’s Paradeplatz location in Zurich houses the late architect’s very last interior project, a design for an exhibition celebrating Dada master Kurt Schwitters, in 2016. Christo Isabelle had a close relationship with Christo, with whom she collaborated on exhibits at various art fairs, like TEFAF and Art Expo Chicago, and she was stunned by the prolific artist’s death in May 2020 from natural causes. “I couldn’t believe it, I thought we’d work with him for many more years to come because he was, like, the fittest person in the room,” she says. “The last time I’d seen him he was so

vibrant and healthy; I didn’t see that coming; I was quite shocked.” Galerie Gmurzynska is working with Christo’s nephew, Vladimir Javacheff, on organizing a Zurich show remembering the artist this fall. It will coincide with Christo’s wrapping of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, this September, a lifelong dream that he didn’t live to see completed. Baz Lurhmann Isabelle brought director Baz Lurhmann to work with the gallery, creating a classroom-like set for an Art Basel Miami show with the theme “My kid could have done that.” “You know how when people see great artwork and they

Prince Albert & Jean Pigozzi Other upcoming exhibitions in New York and Zurich include a show of Jean Pigozzi’s collection of contemporary Japanese artists, and works by photographer Ezra Petronio, founder of Self-Service magazine. “He’s a legend in the fashion world, he’s also probably the best art director in the fashion world,” Isabelle says. “People love his Polaroids that are sort of in the tradition of Warhol, so we’re now preparing a show of his photos.” Isabelle’s charitable passions include the environment, and in recent years she has worked often with Prince Albert and his Foundation on saving the oceans.P

Shimon Okshteyn’s Legacy eloved Hamptons artist Shimon Okshteyn’s untimely death last year was a great loss to the art world, but his critically acclaimed legacy lives on. “The last time I spoke with him he told me he couldn’t wait to get back to his studio to explore his new ideas,” says his wife, Tatyana, the longtime proprietor of the Black & White Gallery / Project Space. Black & White Gallery / Project Space The Southampton space located in Shimon’s converted studio is the latest iteration of Tatyana’s gallery, which she founded in 2002. The gallery followed the trajectory of the New York art world nexus, from Williamsburg to Chelsea and later to Bushwick. “It’s like the Latin saying omnia mea mecum porto – all that is mine I carry with me,” says Tatyana. “Wherever

we lived, that’s where the gallery would go. The goal now is to preserve Shimon’s legacy and introduce the Gallery and its program to the Hamptons community.” Whitney & Brooklyn Museums Throughout Shimon’s successful career, his creative output evolved with each change in his immediate surroundings. A renowned art critic wrote, “ Shimon Okshteyn is a hidden intellectual who observes the world around him and shows it in his metamorphoses.” In the 80’s he arrived on the American art scene depicting the terrifying beauty of very modern sirens with impeccable precision. This period was inspired by his new life in the USA following his immigration from the former Soviet Union. In the subsequent decades, he became famous for his meticulously rendered still lifes in graphite and ambitious multi-media installations inspired by his move

to NYC from New England. During that period, he had numerous exhibitions in many prestigious galleries and museums, most notably at the Whitney Museum, Brooklyn Museum, and State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. Natural Landscapes of the Hamptons Over the years Shimon talked about how much he loved the natural beauty of the Hamptons, and that one day he would like to express that in his work. “ This has been his dream since the mid-’90s, and when we finally settled here three years ago, he began experimenting with abstracted landscapes- a new and exciting genre for him”, says Tatyana, “His creative shifts between genres have always been mysterious to me, especially his last shift from pop culture and nostalgia to poetic interpretations of the natural scenes in the Hamptons. To preserve Shimon’s legacy, the new gallery space, both indoors and outdoors, will be a

Also online is Shimon Okshteyn: Still Lifes, a selection of his signature work. Fusion of Art & Nature Recently the gallery presented En Plein Air Reloaded: Green Fuse a group show. Tatyana curated the exhibit with the idea of nature as the muse. She notes that the show is not a political statement on the environment, but it’s about the fusion of art and nature. The mantra for the show is “To bring art into Nature and Nature into art”. “One of the participating artists told me that nature was her playground; that was where she played using nature as a background in her paintings”, Tatyana explains, “that’s exactly what the show is inspirational and playful.” Several of

Shimon’s paintings are also included as they fit perfectly with the theme. “He was really playing here at the end of his life.”

From Bieber, With Love t seems fitting that Justin Bieber owns one of Linda Colletta’s abstract, brightly colored artworks. Colletta didn’t know about the pop star’s purchase until later; he’d found it via her Instagram feed and bought it using an alias. “It was so exciting to have a celebrity find me, really dig my work, and buy a piece for his wife,” she says. The clincher may have been the work’s title, “Yellow Tinted Glasses and a Pink Gelato,” a lyric from a song by Bieber’s pal, Cautious Clay.

Beyoncé & Britney Spears In some ways, that sale shows how Colletta’s career has come full circle. Before becoming a fine artist, she spent 18 years as a TV set designer specializing in pop music for MTV and VH1, painting backdrops for the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, Dave Matthews, Paul McCartney, Coldplay, Ozzy Osbourne, Duran Duran, Britney Spears and countless others including Destiny’s Child. “I was in Beyonce’s trailer with her when she was freaking out before the Billboard Music Awards. I didn’t even know who I was with––they didn’t even know who they were yet, they were all so BENNETT MARCUS young.”

Artist Linda Colletta Art for Hailey & Justin Bieber BY

Artistic Instincts Both of Colletta’s parents were artists, and despite being a painter all her life, she felt somehow overshadowed by her mother’s talent. “My mother did photo realism, and she was just so brilliant at it, and I remember at a very young age deciding that if I couldn’t be as good as her then I was no good.” Those self-confidence issues kept her from developing her own artistic sensibilities. A debilitating bout of Lyme disease in 2009 forced her to quit her job, and the only thing she could really do was paint. She began creating small watercolors, which led her to try abstraction for the first time as a sort of release from the strictures of her mother’s

realism. “I thought why would I paint a tree when I could just go outside and look at a tree, what the universe made a million times better than I could ever paint it? What’s the point? I just thought that that’s what art had to be. You had to be able to see something.” Playing With Abstraction Colletta’s experimentation with abstraction was a breakthrough in developing her own artistry. “I could create something that doesn’t exist and that would be interesting, a worthwhile exploration, and that’s really what started me in my practice of abstraction.” In the summer of 2017 Colletta created a body of work that truly represented her sensibility in fluorescent, neon-bright colors, and staged her own pop-up show in Westport, Connecticut. She didn’t care if anything sold. She just wanted to express herself. “I painted whatever I wanted, and the show sold out completely, and I felt so validated.” Activating the Canvas “I’m purely painting for the love of painting and the process and the materiality of the paint and the canvas. I’m like a little mad scientist in my lab playing with paint and stuff.” Colletta is known for pushing paint water from cleaning her brushes while walking on her canvases in her Vans sneakers with a polka-dot texture on the soles, creating a speckle effect on the canvas. You don’t see that when the painting is complete, but it’s a way for her to “activate” the canvas as a start. “It’s fun. I put on music and I dance all around the canvas.” Incorporating acrylic, oil stick, spray paint, ink, graphite, and canvas scraps she includes holes and seams in her paintings that are asymmetrical and random; she keeps mistakes and accidents. She works on vintage upcycled painters’ drop cloths. “They’re worn out and dirty, and they have old paint on them, and I love that gritty, raw foundation. And then I build on top of that with this happy, poppy, candy-coated world, like a rainbow culture, everything’s with sprinkles on top, on some level.” Hamptons Exhibitions Colletta recently had a solo show of her largescale works at White Room Gallery and at the Market & Design fair in Bridgehampton. Charles Fazzino Commemorating 9/11 With Pop Art B Y A L E X A N D E R M OY E N

9/11: A Time of Remembrance he legendary pop artist Charles Fazzino wants the 9/11 first responders to be “touched” when viewing his new work 9/11: A Time of Remembrance at the Carlton Fine Arts Gallery on Madison Avenue. “I’m hoping that when they look at the artwork, they feel the same way I did creating it,” the NYC artist said. “That it’s a triumph and a milestone of 20 years of putting that behind us because it’s changed all of our lives.” The NY Mets star Pete Alonso helped unveil the work at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, and a portion of all sales of the art and the prints will go to the museum. carltonfa.com

Superbowl & Grammy Awards Fazzino’s love for 3D pop art stems from his childhood fascination with pop-out books. He appreciates the wow factor 3D pop art can bring. When Fazzino’s art commemorates milestones for events such as the Superbowl and Grammys, his works are colorful, lighthearted, and bright. To move away from this for his 9/11 memorial piece, Fazzino said was difficult. To draw inspiration, he did try to overlook the sadness and horrors of the 9/11 terrorist attack and instead looked to the future. “I researched 9/11 and I just physically and mentally put aside the horrors and I said, ‘Okay, this happened and I’m going to then draw the outcome of that and how that makes me feel, and it’s great that I can do that,’” Fazzino said.

The Twin Towers Fazzino says it’s an honor to have his art shown in the 9/11 Museum and Carlton Fine Arts and believes moments like these are what artists live for. Fazzino’s dramatic work commemorating the 20th anniversary of 9/11 has an ethereal depiction of the Twin Towers that look as though they’re disappearing into an American flag –– with, of course, a pop twist. “I live to have people, the masses, see the artwork. Unless these organizations show your work, it doesn’t do anything to have it hanging in your art studio and no one seeing it,” Fazzino said. “For me it was such an honor –– all of these organizations that have taken to my artwork –– it’s just humbling.”

“I WANT FIRST RESPONDERS TO BE TOUCHED WHEN THEY SEE THIS PIECE.”

“Tagging the Subway”

Art Journey Fazzino grew up with art being made all around him. His mother sculpted and made clothes from recycled material, and his father sketched shoe designs for stores like Saks Fifth Avenue. Born in NYC, Fazzino took his first formal art class as a seventh-grader and at 16 started selling what he calls “little paintings” at an arts and crafts show in Westchester. He then pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree and graduated from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. “When I went to the school of Visual Arts in New York, back in the ’70s, I wanted to stand out as an artist. I put two ideas together — my love of 3D pop-out books and my love for art that is colorful and whimsical,” said Fazzino.

Michael Jackson & Julia Roberts Over the years, Fazzino has gone from selling his art in galleries to being commissioned for events such as the Grammys and the 2016 Rio Olympics. His art is in collections in 25 countries, and his collectors include Julia Roberts and Michael Jackson. At the Grammys, Fazzino walked the red carpet, which he says is something “you can’t even imagine.” Although one part of him felt like he didn’t deserve to be there because he’s not a musical artist, another part of him recognized that he is, in fact, an artist who contributed to the evening. His artwork for the event was seen on the tickets, the program cover and the official poster. Since then, his works have been on display in the Grammy Museum.

First Love Fazzino says he wouldn’t trade the life he has made for himself for anything. He noticed how his siblings were so “damn miserable” going to 9-to-5 jobs, whereas he couldn’t wait for the weekend to end so he could go back to his studio. “I think all artists have a different way of viewing the world. I think being an artist, and having a creative outlet has enhanced my life,” Fazzino said. “I think that’s what it is for artists, that when you’re doing something super creative, it’s not a job. It’s because it becomes your first love. And that’s how it is for me.” P

Marilyn Chinitz Top Divorce Lawyer BY B E N N E T T M A R C U S

D

Tom Cruise & Michael Douglas uring thirty-nine years as one of America’s top divorce lawyers, representing highprofile clients including Tom Cruise and Michael Douglas, Marilyn Chinitz has witnessed many changes in family law. And now, her practice has morphed in unexpected ways due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Virtually Everything Is Online “Now almost all court proceedings are online — court hearings, trials, depositions,” says the Blank Rome partner. These virtual practices, with the exception of trials, are here to stay, Chinitz believes, because it’s cost-effective and efficient. Divorcing parties are assigned a specific virtual time slot as opposed to staying

in the courtroom for hours waiting for their case to come up. But Chinitz finds there is also a downside. “Trying to negotiate and resolve things in the back room when you have time to spend with the adversary waiting for your case to be called has become a lost opportunity now.” she says.

business valuations that have now dropped precipitously due to Covid, requiring distribution of assets that no longer exist, need to be amended. Some people no longer have enough income to meet their support obligations; others contemplating divorce are now considering waiting until things pick up financially.

Lawyers Are Available 24/7 Litigation has not slowed down amid the pandemic. With attorneys working from home, clients have access to counsel at any time of day. “The phone will ring at 6 a.m. on a Saturday,” Chinitz laughs. She answers. She has a client in Hong Kong with whom she speaks at 6 a.m. because it’s evening over there.

Private Judges With courts unavailable, divorcing couples are hiring private judges, usually retired judges, to arbitrate their cases.

Pandemic Finances The pandemic’s disruption has wreaked havoc on divorcing parties. Agreements based on

Philosophy: Consider the Options Chinitz tries to get clients to consider their options before moving ahead with a divorce. “You can educate them as to whether or not divorce is something that they want to embark on,” she says. After hearing why clients think they want a divorce, she sometimes presents a

different scenario. “I extrapolate what their motivations are and how they’re thinking,” Chinitz explains. “You know right away if somebody says, I’m done, I want to move on, but you also know if somebody is hesitant and making decisions without really having full knowledge or having done their due diligence. Impact on Children For one thing, divorce has a tremendous impact on children. Some work with parental coordinators, who help to broker solutions. “I

like the idea of people at least trying to be cooperative,” Chinitz says. “Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn’t.” Colorful Career Chinitz’s colorful career has included some wild cases like a CSI-level extraction of a prenuptial agreement from a safe deposit box in the World Trade Center that had melted in the 9/11 attack and hiring a beautiful female private investigator in Rome to pose as a bride in order to locate a child illegally taken by his mother to Italy, where a relative ran a wedding dress atelier. “You look back, and think, Wow, this is like a movie!” Chinitz laughs. “ There isn’t a story I haven’t heard.” Uncovering a Murder In another astonishing case, Chinitz uncovered the murder of an Orthodox Jewish woman found dead in her Manhattan home and buried immediately without an autopsy, in the midst of an ugly divorce. Chinitz reviewed the circumstance of evidence uncovered by investigators, then she had the family hire and discuss the case with her partner, Geraldine Ferraro — yes, the vice presidential candidate in 1984. When the widower denied the dead woman’s family access to his children, they consulted Chinitz. “They told me the story of her divorce, and after a very extensive meeting, I said, ‘You’ve buried your sister. I think you buried the evidence. I think the husband killed her.’” The private investigators discovered compelling circumstantial evidence and went to the district attorney and obtained an order to exhume the body. The cause of death was determined to be homicide by neck compression, and the ex-husband was eventually convicted in 2019. A reporter has recently written a book about the case. Philanthropy & Entertaining Chinitz lends her expertise to a variety of charitable causes, sitting on the boards of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, the Foundation for Gender Equality, WHAM (Women’s Health Access Matters), and K9s4COPs, which trains German shepherds for police departments. New Branch in Southampton Bertuna and the firm’s other partners all have deep roots in the Hamptons, and they’ve been serving clients in the region all along – and now they’ve opened an office in

Southampton. “I’ve been representing clients out here for 20 years but never had an office, and it was time,” she says. Having been a summer resident in Southampton for over 25 years. The East End is truly her second home and a community for which she cares deeply. A significant reason for opening the office now is many of their clients have been spending most of their time on the East End, working remotely, even in the winter months, so now they’re able to meet with them in Southampton yearround. “I have always had roots here, my family’s been on the East End, as has my husband, Arthur, who is my law partner, started coming here with his family when he was six,” Bertuna says.

Meet Legal Eagle Arthur Aidala Fox News, Court TV, MSNBC, & New York 1. You may recognize Arthur Aidala, as he has appeared on television for years, as a longtime legal commentator analyzing complex cases for Fox News, as well as on Court TV, MSNBC, Fox 5, and New York 1. Aidala is also one of New York’s top criminal defense attorneys, taking on some of the most highprofile cases making headlines in recent years including those of Rudy Giuliani, Alan Dershowitz, and Roger Ailes. Pro-bono for Brigitte Harris This husband-and-wife power legal couple and their team successfully defended NFL Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor, who was accused of sexual misconduct. Another famous case that they took on pro-bono and won despite long odds was that of Brigitte Harris, who killed her father after he abused her for years, and yet another was the crane operator in the fatal 2008 collapse in Midtown Manhattan. Crain’s New York Business called Aidala a “master of defense” and “the «go-to lawyer for those in big trouble.”

Wanted to be an Actor Aidala did not originally want to pursue a career in law; he wanted to be an actor and studied theater in college. But that was not to be, and his father, a Manhattan assistant district attorney, seemed to enjoy his work, so he followed in his footsteps, starting as a prosecutor. “Shortly after joining the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office, I got to fulfill my theatrical dreams by writing, producing, directing, and starring in my summations at the end of trials,” Aidala says, laughing. “When you’re on a trial and you’re in front of twelve jurors, one of the challenges is to hold their attention. And a lot of the theater skills that I learned about body-positioning and voice intonations have helped me in front of jurors and judges throughout the years.”

Supreme Court Decisions That theatrical training no doubt comes in handy for his frequent television appearances, where he’s often invited to analyze cases like the shooting and riots in Ferguson, Missouri, the Boston Marathon terrorist bombing, and Supreme Court decisions such as the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act and same-sex marriage. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia Aidala did not become a lawyer to gain wealth. “Anyone that becomes an assistant district attorney, you don’t do that for wealth or fame, and that was one of my initial forays in the profession, and I loved it,” he says. “And I had tremendous role models there regarding ethics and morals and values.” His father, with whom Aidala worked after starting his firm, and late Supreme Court Justice Scalia, are among the mentors who inspired his passion for service. President of the Brooklyn Bar Association During his 25+ years practicing law, Aidala has been a pillar of the legal community both locally and nationally. A past president of the Brooklyn Bar Association, he has served on the boards of numerous other groups in the field and has been honored by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, the Thomas Jefferson Democratic Club, and the Guild for Exceptional Children, among others. He often appears as an invited speaker at local and state bar associations and has lectured at Harvard Law School alongside Professor Dershowitz. Dean of The Friars Club Aidala, who is now the Dean of the Friars Club, has two children and is an avid gardener, His law practice, TV appearances, and even cooking for family and friends all have one thing in common: people. “I love talking to people and hearing their stories. I’m very much a people person.”P

Thomas Donohoe

Digital Marketing Guru & CMO BY W. A . M U L L E R

T Cuisine Solutions

he past year has been full of surprises for Thomas Donohoe, a best-selling author and nationally recognized expert in digital marketing. In April, Donohoe was named chief marketing officer for Cuisine Solutions, the global leader in pioneering the sous vide cooking technique. A serial entrepreneur, Donohoe had also just sold his company, Level Agency, intending to take some time off to spend

time with his family, but this exciting, newly created position derailed those plans. “I have been an entrepreneur for over a decade, and I was planning on taking a long summer break and spending time with my daughters,” Donohoe says. The day after selling his marketing agency, Cuisine Solutions CEO Felipe Hasselmann, a longtime friend, called and said, “How about you don’t take a vacation and come work with me instead?” He was familiar with the company, having worked with them as a client, and the opportunity was too good to pass up. “I already loved what they’ve done, where they’re going, and their prod-

ucts. And frankly, I am one of the best at what I do, and it would be difficult for my friend, who’s an amazing CEO and running an amazing company, to find a better CMO option.” Sous Vide Cuisine Solutions, the pioneer in the sous vide slow-cooking technique, is one of the biggest companies you’ve never heard of whose products you interact with daily. Its foods are used in over 22,000 restaurants globally, from Michelin-starred dining temples to Starbucks, and at over 6,000 retailers, as well as by the world’s top hotels and airlines. Cuisine Solutions also supplies major institutional entities including healthcare facilities, cruise ships, schools and the military. The company has massive manufacturing plants and test kitchens in the U.S., France, the Middle East, and Thailand. Chef Thomas Keller: The French Laundry Even Thomas Keller of Per Se and The French Laundry partners with Cuisine Solutions, as he mentions the company in his latest book. “The clients are the best of the best, and my job as chief marketing officer is to share those partnerships with other prospective partners and clients around the world,” says Donohoe.

“THIS COMPANY’S THE BEST; IT’S IN THEIR DNA.”

The Delta Force, SEAL Team 6 of the Culinary World Since joining the company full time, Donohoe has often found himself astounded at the innovation he’s witnessed. One division, the Culinary Research & Education Academy (CREA), consists of food scientists. “They invent new foods,” he says. “It’s crazy, and it’s wonderful. They do what we would call R&D.” This division also trains other chefs in the sous vide method. Many, many Michelin-star restaurants and hundreds of other elite restaurants in America send their new apprentices and sous chefs to this team for training. Donohoe describes it as the “black-ops, Delta Force, SEAL Team 6 of the culinary world,” a part of the company’s culture with a focus on quality, ingenuity, and innovation.

The Chefs He’s also amazed at how many of the thousands of employees in executive positions throughout Cuisine Solutions are classically trained chefs. “They’re not businesspeople, they’re not accountants or salespeople or marketers. They’re chefs. They put these people in charge of big things, and so what happens is this giant company still cares about how good the food is. And that’s the reason this company is the best and will be in ten years; it’s in their DNA.” mycuisinesolutions.com Bestselling book Donohoe expects to publish an updated version of his 2019 bestselling book, The CEO’s Digital Marketing Playbook, which received critical acclaim. Its success, he believes, is in offering concrete solutions while other marketing books just talk about strategy in a general way. “Anybody that wants to turn marketing into a customer and profit-generating activity, you want to read something and then know what to do. You want to say, great, I’ve got seven things to do this week, and if I do those seven things correctly, I’ll probably make more money. Well, I wrote the book that has that.” He plans updates as the industry evolves. Children; photography; Patrick McMullan In his spare time, Donohoe devotes his energy to his two daughters, ages 6 and 8. “They are my north, my south, my east, my west. They’re perfect.” Another of his passions is photography, with which he fell in love in his teens. While working in New York as a consultant in digital advertising during its infancy back in the early 2000s, Donohoe took a short career detour, venturing into photography professionally as an assistant to Patrick McMullan. “That was the most fun I’ve ever had, and I love this man to this day,” he says. “I love photography. I still do it. I’ve had some gallery pieces, but I do it primarily for my enjoyment. I was good, but I was never great, and there is no worse place to be good versus great than New York City. P

Regent’s University London eet 22-year-old Sofie Mählkvist, Swedish socialite and budding philanthropist. Sofie is stepping into New York’s social scene this fall. “I’ve been spending my summers in the Hamptons and New York for most of my life. I have family friends here, and it’s really the place where I’ve always felt like home,” said Sofie from Paris, where she has been working at a fashion startup. The Junior League Newly graduated from Regent’s University London, where she studied marketing and global management, the young and brainy beauty recently arrived in town for Fashion Week. Sofie will continue her work with the Junior League, of which she is a chair member in London, the organization’s only European branch. Sofie is also eager to lend her talents to nonprofits in the arts and charities aiding women and children.

Philanthropic Work In London, where the native Swede has spent much of her life, Sofie’s work with the Junior League includes serving in soup kitchens, fundraising and working with new immigrants to help them integrate into their U.K. communities. Working “I WANT TO HELP with immigrants, teaching the English UNDERPRIVILEGED language, assisting with settlement CHILDREN FEEL THEY issues and helping to navigate red tape HAVE A FUTURE.” took center stage over the past 18 months. “That’s really what’s been possible to do during the lockdowns, because this can be done through Zoom,” Sofie explained. Animal Welfare She is also involved with charities operating in Latin America, supporting child and animal welfare, and environmental preservation. Looking to go on an extended trip volunteering in a developing country, Sofie’s research led her to someone with extensive contacts at Guatemalan charities who could help with placements. Magical Classroom Understaffed and in dire need of help, several Guatemalan organizations indicated they’d love to have her assistance, via tools like Zoom and Skype. Magical Classroom trains young adults to teach children aged 4-6 in areas of the country with little access to preschools and kindergartens, providing nutrition to under-

privileged children and preparing them for success when they enter school. Guatemalan Causes Ayuda, an animal welfare organization, supports stray animals with vaccinations, food, medical care, and shelter. IMAP – The Mesoamerican Permaculture Institute – has an ecological education center that promotes permaculture techniques, local biodiversity conservation, production of organic food and a seed bank. Sofie has been working with these charities, helping with fundraising, outreach strategies, marketing and social media campaigns and various other tasks. She helped set up an online shop for Ayuda to sell accessories like dog collars to help raise money. Through social media, she’s helped them to promote their Etsy and Instagram stores. “I help with basic types of background things since I haven’t been able to be in the field.” NYC: Arts Once settled in the city, Sofie looks forward to lending her support to New York’s plethora of artistic and cultural institutions. “I’ve always felt really connected to art; it’s something that can connect everyone around us in such a powerful way. I would love to help different arts organizations to continue doing their amazing work.” Women & Equality Helping to fight the discrimination, inequality and abuse faced by women in society is important for Sofie. “It’s something that feels close to me,” she said. “I feel like that could’ve been me if I would’ve chosen the wrong guy to be with or if I would’ve applied to a different job or a different industry. I hope that someday soon the world will be more equal.” Helping Children Children, of course, are the most vulnerable of humans, and Sofie believes it’s important to help them get on the right track from the start. “I feel if you help underprivileged children, make them feel that they have a future, all possibility is in their hands.” New Horizons In New York, Sofie intends to pursue a job in the fashion world. Her favorite labels include Valentino and Saint Laurent – “they are definitely my style” – but she wears many different brands and describes her look as boho chic with a contemporary edge. “It’s Isabel Marant meets Saint Laurent,” she said with a laugh. Kevin Richards CEO of Lambay Irish Whiskey Americas

BY B E N N E T T M A R C U S

L

ambay Irish Whiskey is expanding its market in America, and Kevin Richards is leading the rollout as CEO for the exclusive importer in the U.S. and throughout the Western Hemisphere. Lambay, independently sourced and master-blended, is unlike any other whiskey anywhere; it is produced on private Lambay Island, three miles off the coast of Dublin, and is matured in hand-selected Camus Cognac casks. The Island has been owned by the Baring banking family since 1904 and acts as a wildlife sanctuary complete with a castle. Lambay also features one of Ireland’s “Holy Wells,” the Trinity Well – the volcanic spring source of the ultra-pure water used in the final products. Houses of Camus & Revelstoke The whiskey is a collaboration between the Baring family’s Revelstoke Trust, which owns Lambay Island, and the world-renowned French cognac producer House of Camus. Alexander Baring, 7th Baron Revelstoke, and

Cyril Camus, the fifth generation of the Camus family, came together to create a unique range of complex, smooth whiskeys, blending the unique maritime microclimate environment of the Baring ancestral home and the centuriesold experience of the Camus masters. Both men share a love of nature and l’art de vivre; they collaborate on all aspects of the whiskeymaking process, combining the centuries-old blending and maturation skills of Camus and the unique environmental treasures of the island to produce their signature Lambay Irish whiskey. Lambay Island’s 2000 Years of History The unique island setting and its romantic history are a big part of what drew Richards, a spirits industry veteran, to head up the U.S. distributorship. “What I love about this compared to my last two brands is that I can point to a map and say, ‘That’s where our whiskey comes from,’” he says. Lambay Island has enjoyed a rich and quirky history since Ptolemy mapped it 2000 years ago. After the Romans, some of the original Vikings in the fifth and

“THE COGNAC CASKS FROM FRANCE COME BY BOAT OVER THE WATER.”

sixth centuries were there – its name is a variation of Norse for “lamb island.” Richards notes, “Throughout those centuries there were pirates, it was a penal colony, there was a hotair balloon race from France to Ireland, and the balloonists got off-course and ended up on the island.” Cecil Baring, 3rd Baron Revelstoke In 1904, Cecil Baring, 3rd Baron Revelstoke, director of his family’s London banking firm Baring Bros., and his wife, American heiress Maude Lorillard, bought Lambay Island as a retreat. Maude’s father, the tobacco tycoon Pierre Lorillard IV, founded Tuxedo Park, the posh enclave outside New York City which attracted America’s rich and powerful. In the late 1880s, it was where “The Four Hundred”, pillars of New York’s high society, came to play, and where the tuxedo became fashionable after socialite James Brown Potter wore a tail-less black dinner jacket modeled after one he’d seen on the Prince of Wales during a trip to Britain. Edwin Lutyens, one of England’s most esteemed architects, later transformed the

castle and the island’s other buildings over many years. Today, the entirety is considered Lutyens’s masterpiece in romantic domestic architecture. Puffins & Wallabies In the 1950s, the 5th Lord Revelstoke brought a troupe of wallabies to the island. There are puffins and 2,500 other species of birds there, as well as additional wildlife, including a seal colony. Butterflies and bees proliferate, thanks to the natural habitat, sparse population, and lack of pollution. “It’s a Galapagos-of-the-north,” Richards says. Today, Alexander Baring, 7th Baron Revelstoke, the whiskey entrepreneur, is spearheading “The Lambay Initiative”, a comprehensive effort to preserve the island’s coastline, flora, fauna, and architecture in pristine condition. Tours of the island can be arranged. lambayisland.ie A Maritime Soul Lambay has close ties to the sea, and that close association will continue in the U.S. “We do come from an island, and there are boat races around it; the Barings are very sea-oriented,” says Richards. “Even the cognac casks from France come by boat over the water. And the sea air is one unique ingredient because, during the maturation process, the very high salt content in the air affects the taste.” In addition, there is a natural spring on the island, which is volcanic, and that very pure spring water is mixed with the distillate in the whiskey-making process. “Our voice and brand are going to be nautical, to a certain extent.” Spirits, Branding Pro A Wharton graduate, Kevin Richards has over 20 years of experience in the luxury goods and spirits industries. He introduced America to Prosecco in 2001, with Mionetto Prosecco and helped launch Voss Water with his advertising agency, Dune Road Group. Richards later segued to direct brand management, serving as CEO of Christiania Vodka, Royal Elite Vodka, and, most recently, Blackwell Rum, owned by hospitality mogul and music-industry legend Chris Blackwell. Banishing Acne Scars

BY LAUREN CHEUNG

D

Beyond Skin Deep aisy Jing, CEO and Founder of the indie skincare company Banish, glows. That, however, was not always a given. Jing started her battle with acne in the third grade: it clung to her, plaguing her from her formative years until early adulthood. Growing up, she went through a slew of intensive treatments that only exacerbated her skin’s condition. Jing wore black turtlenecks to school to hide more of herself, only to despair when “blizzards of skin flakes” showed on her clothes. “I remember waking up as a teenager to bloody cracks on my face because it was so

dry,” she tells me. “My towels and sheets had streaks of white in them because of the bleaching agents in my skincare. I suffered decades of that! It was awful.” Chinese American As a first-generation Chinese American who immigrated to the Midwest at the age of three, Jing is no stranger to struggle. She lived in the basement of someone else’s home while her mother worked paycheck to paycheck at McDonald’s. Jing was often ostracized by her peers. As a “depressed and acne-stricken girl,” she experienced a twofold type of suffocation, whether it be through the acrid Neutrogena gel that her mother slathered onto her nose, or through the

bullying that she endured. Despite the Zoom-distorted quality of Jing’s voice, she sounds confident. There is poise to her relaxed posture when she speaks, and it is almost difficult to reconcile Jing as she is now with how she speaks of herself as a growing adolescent. “Growing Up ‘Ugly’” There is no need to imagine that younger, more unconfident permutation of herself: Jing’s foray into skincare started on YouTube with a candid video that she uploaded titled “Growing Up ‘Ugly.’” That video went viral, after which she used her channel to review skincare products to people who were drawn in by her frankness and relatability. While

pursuing a pre-med track at Duke University with the intention to become a dermatologist, she found herself quickly growing disenchanted with the cosmetics and skincare industry. “I was learning that unnecessary ingredients in skincare were making my skin break out.” Acne Positivity Impassioned by her discoveries, Jing began concocting her own skincare regimens at home, documenting her processes online. When her skin cleared up, Jing realized that she had never stopped her tendency to berate herself. With that revelation, Jing redoubled her efforts to emphasize “acne positivity,” a movement that she is a pioneer of, working to destigmatize skin-deep imperfections. “It’s not the way you look,” she emphasizes. “It’s the way you feel about yourself that matters.” Her social media presence has been marked by not only treating her skin better but also the gradual molting of her insecurities. Jing’s audience on YouTube quickly took notice of her skin improving through her uploads, and fans received samples of her skincare mixtures. That was how her company, Banish, was born––entirely by accident. Making her Business Work Once Daisy created her skincare products solely to use on herself, Daisy’s YouTube audience kept asking, “What products are you using?” and “What happened to your acne?” Daisy’s friends and family, too, commented positively on her skin. “For once, someone wasn’t giving me unsolicited acne advice, but instead they said my skin looked great. I realized it was because I completely changed my skincare and used what I was making!” She would create her products at night and bring them to the post office as they opened to ship them out, creating

YouTube videos in the daytime. Two years later, she crossed $1M in revenue, and by the eight-year mark of her business opening, Banish had grown into a multimillion-dollar business. “I still pinch myself that we’ve grown and have been in business for so long, having bootstrapped the business.” Because the business started by accident, Jing has no intention of moving as many products as possible for profit gain. “What motivates me is seeing people’s lives change through our products. More importantly than the skin issue acne causes, is the effects of someone’s confidence.” P banish.com

How to Get Admitted to an Ivy League School BY ANGELA NOELLE

T

THIS INITIATIVE HELPS THE STUDENT DEVELOP THEIR OWN PERSONAL AMBITION AND SOMETHING THEY ARE TRULY PASSIONATE ABOUT

wenty or thirty years ago, a high GPA and good test scores were almost enough to guarantee a seat at many of the nation’s top colleges. For today’s high school seniors, however, the competitive college admissions world is anything but straightforward. Every January, when most applications are due, many students are still at a loss when it comes to what top schools such as Harvard or Yale are looking for. Elite schools are not just looking for academic excellence -that may be necessary to get your application to the next round, but prospective applicants need to show that they went the extra mile to prove their potential. Melody of New York was one such student. She performed well at Horace Mann, receiving mostly straight A’s and scoring a 1560 on her SATs. Her main interest, however, was literature. She was passionate about writing, and spent time after school tutoring elementary school students in English. Eventually, Melody became aware of the plight of newly-arrived refugees to the U.S., and the lack of educational resources available to them. She decided to combine her lifelong love of literature with her desire to aid these refugees, but wasn’t sure where to start. Melody got to work researching how to get connected with refugees in need, and after dozens of cold emails, partnered with a global aid organization that provided her with the contacts necessary to get her project off the ground. She developed her own curriculum and started a book club for refugees aged 13-18, in which she not only helped them strengthen their English language skills, but also introduced them to her favorite childhood novels and stories, from Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree to Homer’s The Odyssey. Eventually, her project’s original NY chapter spread to several chapters across the globe, and Melody became a promising name in refugee advocacy. What Melody demonstrated to colleges was the critical X factor that so many schools are looking for: impact. She not only excelled at an elite private high school that offered her a

plethora of state-of-the-art academic resources, but she also went the extra mile to make real change in her community and create a butterfly effect of activism with her peers. By dedicating so much time and energy to her passion, Melody not only made an impact but also ended up with a college application that made her stand out from the crowd and ultimately gain admission to her dream school, Brown University. Ultimately, top schools have their pick of the litter. With most schools having received a record-breaking number of applications this past cycle, they could fill their incoming freshman class several times over with 4.0 GPAs and 1600 SAT scores. “Nowadays, test scores and G.P.A. alone won’t get you into a top school,” Christopher Rim, a 26-year-old college-admissions consultant in New York City, says. “You need really standout extracurricular activities that make your application memorable.” After graduating from Yale, Rim founded a college-consulting firm, Command Education, whose services start at around a thousand dollars an hour. “We work as an incubator for teens, providing support and expertise to help students develop their own passion projects, build a meaningful nonprofit, or run their own company. Students learn leadership skills within their community and this naturally helps them stand out to top schools,” says Rim. “It’s important that this initiative develops the student’s own personal ambition and something they are truly passionate about -- that’s why it takes years for something like this to be developed.” What colleges are truly looking for is the young generation’s movers and shakers, the changemakers and leaders. When a student demonstrates that they have left a lasting impact on their community, a college knows that they will go on to make a similar impact on their own campus and beyond. By dedicating their time in high school to meaningful and authentic activities that reflect their genuine passions, students can vastly improve their chances of standing out in the competitive college admissions process. Champion for Those in Need arole Crist sees her role in society as one of public benefit. After an esteemed career in private business and public life, it’s now all about how and whom she can help. While many know Carole Crist as the former First Lady of Florida, she is equally known in philanthropic circles as a champion for those in need. Her personal and professional experiences in public and private life have honed her understanding of the impoverished and the underserved, giving her a unique perspective on the “who” and “how” one can make a difference. Fisher Island Crist is a native New Yorker, but now calls Fisher Island, Florida home. After earning a degree from Georgetown University Business School, she went on to take the reins of her family’s 100-year-old Halloween company for 25 years and built a global private jet business, among her various corporate ventures. Impact Investing This path has led Carole into the world of “impact investing.” People invest money to advance a social agenda and expand opportunities for those in need, typically in the technology sphere. Developing disruptive technologies not only shakes things up, but also brings positive 21st-century solutions to the problems facing society today and generates outsized

To paraphrase JFK, impact investing is the proverbial “rising tide that lifts all boats.” Capital with a Conscience If impact investing is the tide, then Carole Crist is a wavemaker. Carole is the Founder of CLC Global Advisors, a firm that works alongside select clients and family offices whose shared objective is to build businesses that can have a significant impact around the world. Coining the phrase “capital with a conscience,” Carole and fellow business leaders have made waves in various industries. “Investors have myriad choices for how to allocate human and financial capital. Why not deploy it with a purpose into ventures that have a positive impact on people’s lives? It is classic doing well by doing good,” she says.

Women in Leadership Carole’s foremost passion is the advancement of women in business. She emphasizes a shocking statistic: only 2% of venture capital dollars go to companies founded by women. This is a tremendous disparity she hopes to rectify by both raising awareness and actively engaging in female startups. It is worth noting research shows that businesses with women founders tend to have a higher rate of success. “I see elevating women as my highest calling”, she says. Crist believes we must do all we can to support women in business and fuel their success. “By helping women break into the technology field and the venture capital realm, I know that our world will be more equitable, inclusive and successful for generations to come.” P

he might be known for her public relations prowess, but Stacey Bender, founder of The Bender Group Public Relations, is known just as much for her personal touch and relationships.

While Bender has worked with dozens of clients since founding The Bender Group, she measures her long career in terms of motherhood. “My company has been around for 26 years – I remember this based on the age of my fourth child who was born when I first

ventured out on my own,” exclaims Stacey. “I had children ranging in ages from 0 to 6, and that’s how I always keep track of how old the agency is!” Not only does Stacey have a close-knit family – all her children have worked with her at one point and her eldest son, Hayden Hammerling, currently serves as her partner and president – her clients, many of whom she has retained since starting her boutique agency, also have become like family. With Stacey’s personalized care, plus the passion she brings to each project and person, it’s not

hard to see why Bender continues to gain strategic successes year after year. Due to the success, most of Bender Group’s clients remain referral based. “Our close client base really enjoys our boutique environment which has exceptionally high-level media results and creativity,” explains Bender. Upon graduating college and moving to New York, Stacey was thrown into the public relations pool, or rather ocean, at a major agency called DAY, which was eventually taken over by Ogilvy and Mather. During her time at DAY, where she was mentored by the two women founders, who played an instrumental role in her PR career, Stacey started working with blue chip clients, including Crystal Light, Kool-Aid, and Maxwell House. It was when her own house started expanding with the addition of more children that this public relations powerhouse realized she needed to be able to work around her own schedule, resulting in The Bender Group PR. Today, The Bender Group specializes in lifestyle brands, as well as everything from food to fitness, health and wellness, tech, businessto-business and smaller start-ups. The Bender Group opened their doors with the The French’s Food Company and continued with them for over 20 years. This goes to show how valued Bender’s industry experience is and the deep, entrusting relationships formed with clients. While she has always loved working with non-profit organizations, but none is closer to her heart than BIGVISION.NYC, a non-profit that supports young people in recovery, where she serves on the advisory board. This home education and carrier screening program based out of Emory University Department of Human Genetics, which started in 2013 with just reproductive genetic testing, now tests for hereditary risk of over 40 types of cancer. While they have now reached tens of thousands of clients, JScreen was originally born when a Jewish couple went to get tested in order to determine if either of them was a carrier for certain diseases, especially those prevalent in their community, before starting a family. However, they were only being screened for a limited number of diseases and their child wound up with a severe genetic disease, making her unable to walk or talk. They eventually came to the Emory Department of Human Genetics, known for their amazing team of genetic counselors who continue to lead the way for this public health initiative. ReproGEN is so accurate that they decided to expand with the

“IT’S AMAZING TO SEE HOW THE PROGRAM HAS EVOLVED AND THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WE HAVE TOUCHED IN SOME WAY.” equally crucial CancerGEN test. According to Hillary Regelman, Director of National Outreach and Marketing, this lifesaving organization, which can make you aware of certain health risks, also has an aggressive awareness campaign underway. “This is not just a test, it is extremely comprehensive and JScreen is for everyone,” says Hillary Regelman. “If both parents are carriers of a genetic disease, a baby can get it. JScreen cancer genetic testing, which is available to everyone 21 years of age and up, is also so critical. With just a simple saliva test, we can save a life. The more people we test, the more lives we save,” adds Hillary. All you have to do to receive your simple at-home test is just sign up online, provide a sample and use pre-paid postage – let’s just say

that they have been pandemic proof since before the pandemic! JScreen provides hands-on care once results are in with their licensed genetic counselors who explain the results simply and efficiently via phone or teleconferencing with the patient, and send reports to the patient and the healthcare provider so that appropriate action can be taken. ReproGEN currently costs $149 and CancerGEN is $199. JScreen offers financial assistance to those who qualify. The proof of their passion for saving lives is in the incredible stories they hear, as well as the healthy babies that are born. As the JScreen team likes to say – “we are a small team with a huge footprint.”P

BiCE

COMES TO SOHO BY GEORGE WAYNE

B

iCE Cucina Midtown on 55th Street has long been a personal favorite for any Italian foodie and so to learn that the eponymous restaurant brand has now brought its pedigreed family ties and its long-standing culinary traditions (which go back nearly a century) to 15 Watts Street, in the heart of fashionable Soho has been met with unrepressed glee in certain parts. In 1987 BiCE first became one of the chicest and glamorous Italian restaurants in New York City. With its Adam Tihany, sleek uber-elegant design notes, BiCE struck a note with the jet-set types such as fashion designers Bill Blass and Calvin Klein and Norma Kamali, who flocked to see and be seen over the house signature Osso Bucco or Endive Salad and the other famous signature delights of BiCE. BiCE re-emerged as BiCE Cucina with its Manhattan partnership with the legendary impresario Peter Guimaraes. The latest BiCE Cucina that just opened on the ground floor of the famous NEXT model building on Watts Street in Soho

is very much the baby of the third-generation BiCE heir Raffaele Ruggeri whose father Roberto Ruggeri created the legendary foodie brand in 1987. But the roots of the BiCE brand go back to Milan and 1926 when the famous restaurateur’s grandmother Beatrice and her husband Geno opened the very first family trattoria which is still there to this day. BiCE Milano is still open every night on Via Borgopesso 12. Bice was Beatrice’s nickname, and she remains at the heart of this family business. She was known for her extraordinary hospitality and genuine warmth and there’s no denying she’s passed on those traits to her grandson who will be the first to greet you with a smile and the booming and oozingly charming Italian accent the minute you enter the bight stylish room open to the buzzing Soho street. The made-in- Milan imprint of style and hospitality is full throttle all night long whilst drooling over the Tagliolini Aragosta of lobster being scarfed down at the

next table and then hearing the maestro’s booming voice from across the room as he seats another guest or five. ‘’It’s a Milan state of mind Manhattan style,’’ says the fabulous Raffaele Ruggeri who makes you feel like a long-lost friend the minute you meet him for the first time. ‘’You come into my restaurant, you come into my home.’’ BiCE Cucina Soho has been an instant hit and the buzziest Downtown hot-spot since, oh maybe Cipriani Downtown, which is an arms-length or ten away. There is no denying this blue-chip family brand of fine Italian dining has enlivened the food scene in Soho even more in the post-pandemic era. The long-standing BiCE franchise chef Giuliano Tassinari is setting a truly modern tone from the kitchen with thorough vegan, vegetarian full menu options to go along with the decades-long signature BiCE classics such as Ravioli Massaia and the Parpadelle al Telefono. ‘’The goal is to bring tasty and healthy food for the new generation whilst preserving the traditions of the house heritage,’’

‘’IT’S A MILAN STATE OF MIND MANHATTAN STYLE,’’ SAYS THE FABULOUS RAFFAELE RUGGERI WHO MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE A LONG LOST FRIEND THE MINUTE YOU MEET HIM FOR THE FIRST TIME.

says Chef Giuliano. And you know you are in the presence of a highly trained and competent chef when even the simple house Caesar Salad is the most delicious one you will ever have anywhere in New York City. But the must-order first course must always be the Octopus Carpaccio, which arrives looking like a piece of plated art you might see hanging at the Uffizi. When you visit BiCE make sure to ask Chef Giuliano to stop and explain the vacuum sealing process involved with his classic seafood dish. The Lobster Salad arrives chilled to perfection along with an incongruous - yet somehow it works - steaming side of what at first looks like warm lentils. ‘’It is actually hot black rice with a vegetable sola base and I’ve paired it with the Lobster Salad because I want to give the feeling of eating the land and the sea in a light way together.’’ Suffice to say, it’s a deliciously complex and inventive touch from the chef and not for the first time either. ‘’My greatest joy is in creating a brand-new dish for my guests.’’ So people, don’t be afraid to BiCE - ‘I will have what Chef G. has devised from the

kitchen tonight.’ For sure the arbiter’s next visit to BiCE will be to sample the dry-aged tomahawk to go along, yes, with the other famous house classic here, the Linguine Vongole. BiCE is a global brand. BiCE was the first New York City restaurant brand to franchise itself. BiCE led that movement, and the Ruggeri culinary traditions and expertise still lend themselves to nine other BiCE restaurants in almost every fashionable cosmopolis imaginable. From Worth Avenue in Palm Beach to the iconic Burj Khalifa of Dubai to the Borui Hotel in Shanghai and a brand new one opening in Doha, Qatar just in time for next year’s World Cup of Football. ‘’We always maintain the simple perspective my ‘nonna’ (Bice) always told me,’’ says the BiCE Group CEO. ‘’They will eat very well and be well taken care of when they come to dine at BiCE.’’ Amen. THE VAST ICONIC MURAL OF THE STATUE OF LIBERTY FORMS THE BACKDROP TO THE CHICEST OUTDOOR DINING SETTING ANYWHERE IN MANHATTAN

Mishka T Soho M O S C OW O F F THE HUDSON BY GEORGE WAYNE

here is no denying that the SoHo dining scene revival is bubbling once again in New York City. On every corner is a unique dining option in SoHo and we are particularly intrigued with Mishka SoHo on Broome Street and its delightful narrative as a bit of ‘Moscow on the Hudson’. Actually, Mishka SoHo is more authentic Odessa than Tverskaya Street, but when you need to relish your inner Russophile, this is the place to find the coolest, chicest Russian, Georgian, and Ukrainian emigres who now call NYC home.

For them, Mishka SoHo has quickly become their social nexus to eat great home cooking and listen to really good live music. Every time I visit Mishka SoHo I somehow expect an Irina Shayk type to swan through at any minute. And if that famous supermodel did show up and felt like feeding the paparazzi that trail her constantly -- then she would ask to sit outside by the vast iconic mural of the Statue of Liberty which forms the backdrop to Mishka SoHo and the chicest outdoor dining setting anywhere in Manhattan. It is that kind of vibe and ephemera and it must be because of the caviar offerings that have prime of place on the menu. And the delicious dumplings and the chilled vodka and the serious attention to tea and all those traditions. Marina Genel is the force majeure behind Mishka SoHo. Her talented, young chef Anton Churchin serves up the most delicious Chicken Stroganoff anywhere on this island. ‘’The whole idea at Mishka SoHo is to elevate and tweak and re-invent our authentic classical Eastern European favorites with an obvious nod to healthy eating,’’ says the utterly funny and charming restaurateur. If Pelmenis (Russian dumplings), Stroganoff and the must-order Chicken Kiev intrigues-- well this is the SoHo nexus to scarf it all down and top it all off with the expected Blinis and Ossetra caviar. Other classics here include the House Cured Herring, the Mushroom Vareniki, or the Russian Dips Trio of eggplant caviar, squash caviar and black bean hummus for the true vegan lurking within.P mishkasoho.com

Acknowledged by the New York Times with an impressive 2-star rating, you are sure to enjoy an intricate yet simplified tasting of delectable Spanish fare. Salinas’ menu showcases fresh, seasonal ingredients that include a variety of dishes and small plates such as the savory Tomatitos, made with farmer’s market tomatoes and Pan Tumaca with hojiblanca olive oil. Looking for something a little heartier? The herb-dusted hanger stewak and Arroz Vasco with salted cod risotto will take your taste buds to another level. Be sure to leave room for dessert as the Basque Cheesecake’s airy texture and torched appearance is a real treat for a well done sweet. The sleek space of Salinas is sectioned into three distinct dining areas, including a tapas lounge and bar, a main dining room and a garden with a retractable roof as well as a gorgeous stone made fireplace. The design of the charming garden allows for outdoor dining to be enjoyed all year long. Another defining character of this lively establishment is the freshly picked flower arrangements that are used to achieve an eye-catching yet naturally fragrant, aesthetically pleasing vibe. The impeccable attention to detail both in the dining area and in the dishes creates a seamless experience through design and delivery. Salinas is a must to try for anyone looking for an authentic Spanish experience in the heart of New York City. P salinasnyc.com
