New Addition:

Hillcrest Playground Renovation

At the end of spring 2022, Parish began construction on a new playground at the Hillcrest campus and looks forward to opening it to students in mid-fall 2022. The Hillcrest playground project originated in 2019 prior to the pandemic, and the School is excited to finally break ground! After much collaboration with a committee of Lower School teachers and design work by Studio Outside, as well as significant donor support, this dream will finally become a reality.

Serving our PreK through 2nd graders, this space will include developmentally appropriate equipment, along with the addition of artificial turf under the play equipment that should greatly reduce the frequency of indoor recess after rainy days. Significant work to the landscape grading will also help to improve the drainage and usability of the entire playground located at the southeast corner of the campus.

In addition to swing sets, slides, sport courts and open play areas, other fun features of the new playground include: Music Play area with sound pipes, drums and more; Outdoor Classroom space with additional “game board” designs on the ground surface; Climber & Spinner equipment for older students; Nature Play area with boulders, sandbox, sitting/stepping logs, collection tables and a magnifying station to get a closer look at nature finds.

Parish springs into its next 50 years The 50th Anniversary momentum that began in the fall with a new fight song, Dave’s Day of Service and Homecoming fireworks, carried over into spring as the Parish community continued to gather and celebrate.

The new year began with fundraising traditions we love – the 5th Annual Parish Bingo Night, chaired by Rachel Cutshaw and Michele Gough, and our Parish With Love auction made possible by the School’s generous faculty and staff. The 2022 Parish Gala followed with an amazing night on the turf at The Star in Frisco.

Later in March, the School celebrated another important tradition, Parish Founders’ Dinner, an event established in 2010 in honor of founding Head of School Mary Loving Blair. For the first time, the Founders’ event was hosted on campus with a seated dinner in Eller Hall. Parents, alumni and trustees were joined by Wall of Service members and all enjoyed a very special addition to the evening’s program . . . in honor of the School’s 50th Anniversary, we brought back a beloved Parish Day School tradition – the Parish Style Show! A throwback to the Parish of the 90's, current and former Parish parents and students walked the runway and modeled clothing from Tootsies, Rye 51 and Watters. Thank you to Style Show chairs, the mother-daughters team of Terri Nauslar (PDS parent of alumni & current grandparent), Megan Neitzel (PDS '93) and Lindsey Evans (PDS '94).

Spring Fling: In April, one final event wrapped up the 50th anniversary celebration. The all-school Spring Fling, chaired by Lisa Macaraeg and Ashley Skibell, brought our community together for ice cream and carnival treats, bounce houses and face painting, and live music by the JAM WOWs! Proud Panther fans stayed all evening to cheer on our Varsity Softball, Lacrosse and Baseball teams. And the best part of all, we invited our NEW Parish families to join in the fun.

The crowd was electric and the Parish community was alive with hope and excitement for the future.

2022 Parish Gala Celebrating 50 Years of Parish A golden anniversary deserves a night to remember, and what a night it was! More than 700 people attended this year’s Gala fundraising event at The Star in Frisco. Guests included current Parish parents, parents of alumni, Parish Day and Parish Episcopal School alumni, trustees, faculty, staff, grandparents and friends of Parish. Thanks to Gala Chair Marla Buskin and her incredible Gala Committee, it was a night of reflecting on Parish’s unique history while celebrating the School’s exciting future. Prior to Gala, sponsors enjoyed a VIP Party in the Dallas Cowboys’ private dining space, The Training Table, and entertainment by The Rodney Smith Band. The evening’s program kicked off with a heartwarming video featuring an interview with members of the Class of 2007, Parish’s first graduating senior class. Guests enjoyed dinner and a celebration cake that sparkled, along with dancing, auctions and casino from endzone to endzone at The Star – all while raising important funds for Parish and its students! The 2022 Parish Gala was the perfect way to ring in the next 50 years of Parish.

Ask Pete – What is The Grove?

The Grove at Parish Episcopal School, launched in fall of 2021, is made up of community ambassadors – storytellers – who share the collective of their families’ Parish stories and experiences to plant seeds and nurture Parish’s tenants of Wisdom, Honor and Service within and outside our school community.

We believe that every single family at Parish has a story to tell that builds an unshakable connection. In its inaugural year, The Grove and its initial 12 members supported Parish admission events, mentored prospective and current families, and worked together to identify strengths of the group and cultivate them into the branches of the Parish community. Future and current Parish families are encouraged to come to The Grove for support, information and experience.

Erika and Chad Burkhardt (Caroline ’24) opened their home to The Grove for a kick-off Community Dinner where Chad, a chef in his “free time,” served dishes reminiscent of communities he’s been a part of throughout his life, from his New Mexico roots to his law school years at Duke to his family’s time at Parish.

The Grove members closed out their inaugural year by planting a tree, with a special blessing from Mother Alina Williams, Parish Midway Chaplain. The newly designated space, located at the Midway campus, is a symbol of Parish’s deep community roots.

8th Grade Students Donate $30K through Community Service Projects For the past four years, the 8th grade Community Service class, a required trimester course, has been fortunate to have a $10,000 donation gifted three times a year – that’s $30,000 per year! – to a nonprofit organization that a student-group has chosen based on their shared service goals. The funds to support our 8th grade students in carrying out the School’s tenant of Service in this way come from the generous support of an anonymous donor. We thank them for providing the means for our 8th graders to make a bigger impact on their communities by going beyond a presentation and an idea.

Once the students identify their chosen cause and organization, they must reach out to the staff of that organization and work with them to develop an innovative idea for which the donation would potentially be used. The students present to a panel of judges their developed professional presentation about the nonprofit organization, highlighting their innovative idea. One selected group each trimester receives $10,000 to donate to their chosen organization for the development of their idea.

This year, Tri-2 winners Emily Browning and Annie Broach were able to use their donation to purchase supplies for their innovative idea – comforting “Care Bags” for pediatric cancer patients at local hospitals – and assemble bags at Parish's Midway campus. The care bags include a soft blanket, journaling and activity book supplies, and a note from the students. They worked with a team for three days to assemble the bags (and unpack a lot of Amazon boxes) and will deliver them to hospitals this summer.

The winners of this year’s Class of 2026 8th grade community service projects are: Tri-1: Jillian Platt for Genesis Children’s Theatre – funding tuition for participants in a show.

Tri-2: Emily Browning and Annie Broach for Children’s Cancer Fund – care bags for pediatric cancer patients.

Tri-3: Parker Plaskoff for Dallas Junior Wheelchair Mavericks – renting much needed gym facilities for their participant athletes.

Each year, the students in the Community Service class reach out to approximately 65 different nonprofit organizations and many of them form strong relationships. Due to the location of the nonprofit organization or the scope of work needed to bring the idea to fruition, the donation is often transferred directly to the organization. However, when there's a chance to also serve the organization directly on campus at Parish, we don’t want to miss the opportunity!

We are so proud of all our 8th graders, and we thank our donors as well as our entire Parish community for supporting our students in their pursuit of Service.

Parent Service Spotlights Martha Johnston Legacy Award: Ronda Criss

As a stalwart volunteer, Ronda also raised funds on behalf of the School, serving two years on the Board’s Advancement Committee as plans were laid for the Remarkable Realities campaign, which ultimately infused $20 million into the School’s endowment in 2012-2013. Later she dedicated seven years as a Parish Fund volunteer, often serving as the leader of one of her two daughters’ grade levels, as vital funds were raised for our annual budget.

Ronda Criss (Claire ’13 and Khaki ’22) is the 2022 recipient of the Martha Johnston Legacy Award, given annually to a senior parent who has exemplified Martha’s selfless service and boundless spirit.

The gifts that Ronda Criss’ time and talent have directed to Parish are incredible – and so worthy of recognition. It is even more thrilling, as part of the graduation ceremonies associated with Parish’s 50th anniversary, to celebrate a woman whose family commemorates a Parish anniversary of their own this year. Ronda and her husband David have been engaged members of the Parish community for 20 years. Their eldest daughter Claire was a member of the first 3rd grade class on the Midway campus.

In her earlier days at the Hillcrest campus, Ronda began her service to Parish as a room parent, volunteering to help with field trips and joining planning committees for important community events like Freaky Friday/ Spooky Saturday. She served several years on the Parents’ Association Board, including one as PA President (2018 – 2019).

More than anything, though, the service Johnston Award winners render leaves a legacy. Something the individual has helped to shape, or even start, remains at Parish after their time of service concludes. In the case of Ronda, the legacies she leaves are both enduring and beautiful.

Ronda was one of the founding members of The Arts People (TAP) booster organization for PARISHarts and drafted its initial by-laws with fellow parent Kathy Greene. Since its inception in 2007, TAP has helped fuel the rapid ascent of the arts at Parish, quickly elevating our young programs to heights comparable with the more established ones at peer schools nationwide and generating the momentum that turned dreams of a performing arts facility into the Noble Family Performing Arts Center.

TAP and its sustaining work on behalf of PARISHarts will endure as a signal of Ronda’s legacy of service to Parish.

If all of that wasn't enough, this past year, Ronda partnered with her good friend and fellow senior parent, Laura Baggett, to serve as the Senior Gift co-chair. Together, they mobilized the class of 2022 parent community and others to raise nearly a quarter of a million dollars to further support the remarkable Parish Memorial Garden and Mira's Fountain. Now, each day as we approach the front of the Midway campus, we encounter beauty in the form of the garden, the fountain and the spirit of Mira Foshee which that special space evokes.

We thank Ronda for all she has done for our school over the last two decades. She is a most worthy winner of the Martha Johnston Legacy Award!

Parent Service Spotlights (continued from page 9) Bondy-Lee: Lisa Macaraeg The 2021-22 recipient of the Bondy-Lee award, named in honor of Andrea Lee and Gabriella Bondy (the first two chairwomen of the Parish Day School Mothers’ Club – now the Parents’ Association) is Lisa Macaraeg (Kaitlyn ’31, Harlow ’34 and Gray ’35). Since Lisa and her husband Biegel brought their children to Parish in 2017, she has been an “all-in” volunteer.

Lisa has helped in the classroom and with classroom parties, served in the cafeterias on both campuses, volunteered in the Hillcrest library and has been involved in Gala since she became a parent. She helps at almost every admission event and is an admission tour guide, providing thorough and thoughtful tours to our prospective parents.

She has served in leadership roles throughout her short tenure as a parent as well, including as co-chair for the 2019 Gala Silent Auction and the Parents’ Association 2021-22 Secretary, and she has been named President-Elect for the 2022-23 Parents’ Association Executive Board.

As one can imagine, someone with Lisa’s passion for the School and dedication to make every moment memorable for the Parish community, she was a natural selection to serve on this past year’s 50th Anniversary Steering Committee, including co-chairing the finale Spring Fling event that brought our anniversary year to a close. And, of course, we cannot forget the fortitude she showed in wrangling our kid models during the Founders’ Dinner & Style Show – that’s no easy feat!

"Lisa regularly answers the call to serve at Parish and is willing to help in any capacity, in almost any role," said Caroline Doswell, Director of Enrollment Management. "Anyone who serves alongside her recognizes that Lisa is incredibly deserving of this award for not only the amount of time she gives but for the quality of time she commits."

Nauslar Distinguished Service Awards Established in 2018 by Terri and Dennis Nauslar, the Nauslar Distinguished Service Award honors and recognizes full-time faculty and staff members for distinguished service that embodies the mission of Parish Episcopal School. Recipients have demonstrated a commitment to excellence characterized by a nurturing spirit and evident care for students and the Parish community, and an alignment with the School’s Characteristics of Effective Teaching (CET) and Characteristics of Effective Support Staff (CESS). Following are the 2022 recipients of the Nauslar Distinguished Service Award: Kara Freeman, Upper School Mathematics

Riley King, Lower School Music Teacher at Hillcrest

Character, thoughtfulness, integrity, intelligence and humility are just a few words to describe Kara Freeman. Amazing descriptors, yes, but combine them with the gifts that she brings to the classroom – Kara is noted for looking for any avenue to connect with her students and tie their learning to their everyday life. Whether she is explaining the purpose and history of complicated concepts to mathematical scholars or assisting Algebra I students with their first foray into abstract thinking, she can do it all.

One of her nominators stated, “She places significant importance on her classes, but she understands the importance of being adaptable too. She understands the heavy academic and extracurricular demands placed on students. She takes tremendous pride in her work as she focuses on positively affecting her students.” Students leave Mrs. Freeman’s class appreciating math and realizing that they can do math. We are blessed to have Kara in our community with her passion to lead students to see their success in the study of mathematics while also nurturing their growth as adolescents.

A magician in disguise, Riley King teaches our youngest students to experience the world of music in such a fun way that they have no idea they are even learning. If you too step into her classroom and watch her teach you will be as enchanted as they are. According to one nomination, “She is patient, loving and strives to help each student feel loved and cared for, while also gently guiding each student to be the best that they can be in all aspects of their social, emotional and academic development.”

Her classroom management skills and teaching pedagogy are expertly honed as she seamlessly moves from one modality to the next depending on the age of the children in her classroom. Outside of the classroom, every Parish production that she touches is spectacular. More importantly, her remarkable, inspired attitude that she brings to our community every day is nearly inimitable. Her colleagues are amazed by her positivity and joy. She also serves on the IMPACT committee, helps her enrichment colleagues, and always lends a hand when needed. Riley King makes us all want to be better in our craft through her innovative pedagogy and to be a better person because of her compassion for students.

Tiffany Griffin, M.Ed., Registrar and Database Systems Administrator Always the most upbeat and friendliest, Tiffany has served all constituents of Parish and always with a smile. She is helpful, diligent in her work and continually seeks new learning opportunities. As she worked to expand her leadership role at Parish and grow professionally, seeking advice and guidance from her Parish mentors and colleagues along the way, Tiffany earned her master’s in education in 2016. In 2017 she became “The Hub” for Parish as the Registrar and Database Systems Administrator. She has been instrumental in her registrar role with problem solving, taking initiative, and making all our lives easier. One nominator stated, “She is constantly working behind the scenes to make us all look good as she manages more than 1000 students and families. She approaches problems holistically and simultaneously considers all constituents when formulating a solution. She is a team player who never looks for accolades.” Tiffany never rests and continues to seek growth and inspiration, including attending the Head’s Network Women’s Leadership Seminar, where all the women that Parish has sent have returned inspired. In return, we are all inspired by Tiffany.

Excellence in Leadership Award Established in 2020 by an anonymous donor, the Excellence in Leadership Award honors and recognizes full-time faculty and staff members who successfully demonstrate Parish Episcopal School’s core values of Wisdom, Honor and Service as well as exceptional leadership skills in the following areas: a deep connection to the community; the propensity for integrity, courage, humility and fortitude as a leader; risk taking and tenacity; and the ability to think creatively and go the extra mile.

Jenn Makins, Director of ParishSTEM education The 2022 Excellence in Leadership Award recipient is Jenn Makins. Jenn is a caring teacher that operates beyond what is required in her role. She has a strong, steadfast work ethic that is evident in all that she does. One nominator states, “She dedicates countless hours per week, gives unwavering energy, demonstrates leadership and dependability, and displays intrinsic determination to provide the best possible experience to the students in her classes and programs.” Leaders need to be nimble and adapt their style of leadership to the demographics they serve. Many of us have known a student or two that did not always fit into the same “box” as their peers and Jenn manages to make them feel included and a part of her team. Jenn takes that same approach with programming to make it something special and not just “fit” in a prefabricated mold, such as a bold idea of having Parish students compete in NASA’s Human Exploration Rover Challenge. The program has made a significant impact on our school and students as well as students around the globe as they learn from Parish’s Rover team. Beyond Rover, Jenn continues to shine a light on STEM education as a signature program and leads her team with innovative courses and opportunities. We are so honored that Jenn has served this community and expanded our ParishSTEM footprint across the United States via her #IfThenSheCan ambassadorship (and orange statue) and with future engineers in many collegiate programs.

We applaud Jenn for her leadership and willingness to always say “what if?” or “I wonder...”

2022 Distinguished Alumni Award Rebecca "Becca" (Davis) Blount '10 was announced as the 2022 Distinguished Alumna at a special award ceremony during the annual Founders’ Dinner in May. Dave Monaco, former Allen Meyer Family Head of School, presented Becca with the award; here's an excerpt of his remarks: “Our 2010 alumna, Becca (Davis) Blount embodies Parish’s entrepreneurial and forwardfacing mindset. In the eight years since her graduation from the University of Missouri, Becca has worked in three different start-ups along the way earning broad responsibilities.

She first journeyed to Melbourne, Australia to help Wild Timor Coffee Co. launch their social change brand. Within a few years she earned the opportunity to lead more than 100 employees and report directly to the CEO of Green Blender, another wellness startup. Soon she was named Senior Manager of Continuous Improvement and Analytics at Peloton and has helped their brand build their operations nationwide. Even as she has constructed such a strong, early career, nearing Parish’s boldness position in its audaciousness, Becca has been an admirably engaged alumna at Parish. She has served as a mentor in Parish’s Leadership Institute, meeting regularly with a high school student with whom she was paired.

She offered her mentorship in ParishConnect [Parish’s career networking program for alumni], providing career counsel with and for other alumni.

We are also grateful to Becca for generously arranging, for the last three years, a Peloton bike to be donated to our annual Gala.

None of us should be surprised that Becca has continued to forge ahead to be a beacon of Parish and our community, representing so well the entrepreneurial and daring disposition of the School we all love and in the way she approaches life and work.”

Established in 2012, the Distinguished Alumni Award was created to recognize graduates of Parish Episcopal School or Parish Day School who have succeeded in their personal and professional lives as well remained engaged and supportive of Parish. Nominations are currently open for the 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award.

Parish Alumni Board 2022-23 Introducing three new Board members: Whitney graduated in 2010 as a Parish “Lifer.” She went on to graduate from Texas A&M and subsequently earned an additional bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. She has worked as a labor and delivery nurse since 2016 and now manages the L&D floor at UT Southwestern. She married her college sweetheart and together they have one son, Declan.

She is now the Development Coordinator at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) North Texas and Oklahoma region.

➌ Ingrid Torres ’09: Ingrid earned her Bachelor of Science in International Business and International Studies from

Spring Hill College in 2013. Upon completion of her undergraduate studies, Ingrid moved back to Dallas to work in the education sector. She returned to Parish in 2019 and is currently an Associate Director of Parish’s Center for College and Life Planning.

Alumni Spotlight Reed Standly ‘10 SMU Dedman School of Law, 2017 Juris Doctor Texas A&M University, 2013 B.A. in Psychology (Spanish minor) Thanks to the generosity of Parish alumnus Reed Standly '10, his wife Tiffany and the Tadewald Donor Advise Fund, we were thrilled to announce a challenge gift of $10,000 during May’s Panther Proud Alumni Giving Week to encourage and inspire fellow graduates to step up and support Parish! The $10,000 gift was unlocked once alumni gifts reached a total of $10,000 mid-week. The Standly and Tadewald families remain passionate in their support of Parish’s tuition assistance and Belonging and DEI initiatives. Reed and his family have always encouraged giving back to the community and taking care of those in need. Parish is incredibly grateful for the support and care that our alumni and parent of alumni donors demonstrate by supporting the Episcopal mission of building a more inclusive community for all to have an incredible Panther experience. The Panther family is very appreciative of alumni who choose to give back to current students and still actively participate with the Parish community, even a decade after graduating! We’re excited to highlight Reed and what he’s been up to since his time at Parish.

Stand out memories at Parish? This is a difficult one to answer for me! I think if pressed, I might choose our hard-fought and emotional football win over Prestonwood at their homecoming in 2009. Or, perhaps . . . the entirety of our 8th grade DC trip was a blast! A few others that come to mind: getting off-campus lunch privileges for the first time; Dr. Hotz’s fiery philosophical lectures (see also, Mr. Addington’s occasional off-topic, but genius lectures); winning the 8th grade DPL baseball tournament with a jubilant Mrs. Snyder in the stands watching her favorite sport.

Biggest accomplishment so far in your career? I just made Partner and that was a pretty big accomplishment for me.

Biggest lesson learned to date in your career? The Golden Rule applies to business too: treat others how you would like to be treated. I think the world (and the business world) would be a much better place if folks adhered to this simple precept – I certainly try to.

You can’t live without your…? Oh, this is a softball, my wife and son.

What do you miss most about Parish? Parish was such a wonderful and nurturing place. I think it’s a rare thing to find a place with educators that can both push you and encourage your thirst for learning, while providing grounding.

Shout out to a current/former Parish faculty/staff member: I could fill a book with shoutouts of teachers and administrators at Parish who shaped my life. Not to the exclusion of any not mentioned, but a few that come to mind: Nady and Crull, Dr. Hotz, Mr. Addington, Mrs. Peterson and Mr. Jennings.

Any advice to Parish alumni and/or Parish high school students? Find and pursue your passion. Seek out summer jobs and internships to learn what you are and, just as importantly, aren’t interested in. Use high school as a time to feed your curiosity and explore what you’re interested in. Never be afraid to ask advice or ask questions.

What has brought you back to Parish as an alumnus? I have really enjoyed the opportunity to mentor current students through the ParishLEADS program and to give back through philanthropy. I look forward to being a Parish parent soon too!
