Parish Arts: Process vs. Product

ne of my favorite episodes of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood,

In the articles included in this edition of the Pantherbeat we highlight three unique events from this fall and pull back the curtain to the artistic process. Steamroller Smackdown

When the day of the Steamroller Smackdown finally came, we had all three carvings ready to print. Peer schools, Greenhill and Ursuline, and local, professional artists joined in with their carvings and prepared to print with us. Everyone helping was divided into two groups: “ink hands,” those who roll ink onto each linoleum block and “clean hands,” those who prepare each paper for printing by wetting it to allow the ink to stick correctly.

Once prepared, ink hands then place the block on the floor (or parking lot ground in this case) and clean hands place the paper on top with precision.

The National Art Honor Society (NAHS) worked hard in preparation for the Steamroller Smackdown event that took place in November.

We created three large prints, each a unique representation of the event’s theme, Texas Native. The first piece, designed to create a surrealist sentiment that was still recognizable to Texas, resembles the Big Bend National Park cliffs with ground and stag beetles below and crows flying above. Our second carving is a logo of Texas with the native armadillo and bluebells. Our third, an abstract depiction of a unique Texas prickly pear cactus.

Parish Feature Story (continued from page 3) Finally, our designated steamroller drivers roll over the block and paper, creating a print. As we pulled our prints off, we finally felt a sense of accomplishment and knew that our time and hard work was all worth it!

Our designated steamroller drivers: Father Casey, Brian "Hutch" Hutcheson, Alyson Jackson, Andrew Jennings, Nash Lowrance, Michelle Lyon, Matt Rush and Jen Wilson.

After each print, we would inspect what we could improve, which often included adding more ink to certain areas of the block to avoid splotches, and then we would go again. By the end of the event, we had six unique, beautiful designs representing our Texas culture!

Parish Feature Story (continued from page 4) Student Choreography Showcase

wrote a concept for the meaning of their project before choosing and cutting music, and finally beginning the actual choreography.

When working toward the Student Choreography Showcase, all Dance Company members and the 8th graders in Junior Dance Company were tasked with creating a piece. Everyone in both companies were taught a few of these pieces, and non-company students were chosen to perform in some Dance Company projects.

While some class time was given, most of the choreography was created outside of class. Additionally, only fourth year Dance Company members could teach their projects during class – everyone else had to teach in their spare time. Junior Dance Company was given time to learn and rehearse pieces during class.

At times, it was difficult to create movement that felt natural while also staying connected to the music and concept, but seeing the final performance made every hardship worth it.

In Junior Dance Company, the captain created two pieces, second year 8th graders created their own pieces, and first year 8th graders worked together to create one piece.

As this show was completely student-run, dancers learned to collaborate deeper with the tech and lighting crews, as they needed to understand certain cues and timings in order for the show to run smoothly. While the teachers took a step back to allow the dancers the opportunity to control the show, they made sure every choreographer felt confident in their work and were incredibly supportive throughout the entire process.

Dance Company dancers all created one piece, either a solo, small group or full company piece, depending on the number of years spent in the Company. The process of making and teaching the choreography began in September, shortly after the school year started, and ended at the final performance. Every choreographer (Continues on page 6)

Parish Feature Story (continued from page 5) 5th Grade Band Show & Tell

By Zoe Vande Kieft, Instrumental Music & Music Performance The purpose of 5th Grade Band Show & Tell night is twofold: to give our youngest band students a performance opportunity that will highlight their learning process and to educate the families of these students on what it takes to lift an inanimate object from a case and make it sing. At this event, students showcase their musical prowess, the skills they have gained and the dedication and hard work they have invested.

As parents witness firsthand the fruits of their children's musical journey, Band Show & Tell becomes a bridge between generations, fostering a deep appreciation for the arts and the transformative power of music education.

We start at the very beginning: how to sit up straight, tap our toe to the beat, learn to open our case without dumping out the contents, and so on as the layers of complexity build and until we are ready to perform whole songs for our loved ones and friends.

For these young musicians, it is an important rite of passage where the music leaves the rehearsal and practice domain, translates into performance and resonates with a live audience. The camaraderie among band students strengthens as they collaborate and perform in harmony, and their confidence blooms as they perform – each note, a testament to their growth and commitment.

You might have noticed a wall on both the Hillcrest and Midway campuses that features a collection of black and white photos of individual people. This is the Wall of Distinguished Service, which recognizes Parish Day School and Parish Episcopal School faculty and staff members, former and current, who have served the School and its students for 20+ years. Lunchtime with the Hillcrest Green Team In September, Hillcrest students bit off an exciting lunchtime initiative, continuing their commitment to conservation and recycling.

Led by 1st grade teacher Lindsey Ryan, the Hillcrest Green Team and Sustainability committee, working directly with Sage Dining Services as well as the Transfiguration Operations team led by Bracken Reese, implemented a program to compost all food waste and donate remaining, edible food.

With most undertakings of this kind, a program like this doesn’t just happen overnight; it’s been in the making since 2021 thanks to the support of Parish parent Kate Okolita (Grayson ’34 and Ashleigh ’36).

Kate was a key partner with Lindsey in the early stages of planning and the Okolita family set up a restricted fund at Parish for Hillcrest Sustainability. In the first phase of implementation in January 2023, the fund allowed the School to purchase reusable cutlery and cups (eliminating plastic water bottles), and plates for teachers to build their lunches on. Additionally, the fund pays for services with Recycle Revolution, a non-landfill recycling and compost collection service, which is vital to this year’s phase two of the program.

But, we don’t want that unopened, untouched food to go to waste, so what do we do with it? Fortunately, we have some mighty grade-level student helpers during each lunch shift that collect from the tables unopened, sealed items that can be used the following day. Items that cannot be used are disposed of in the Clean Up Zones.

To prepare for phase two and the transition in the lunchroom, teachers set up lessons in the classroom for students to walk through the “Clean Up Zones” and practice sorting their waste. Once it came time to enact the process at lunch, parent volunteers, Hillcrest faculty and staff, and Transfiguration Operations team helped students navigate the real-life Clean Up Zones. With the waste disposed of properly, Recycle Revolution picks up the food waste and sees it through to becoming compost.

To say that lunch has become another learning opportunity for Hillcrest students is an understatement. The Lower School team is looking forward to using the data collected on the amount of food students are composting, the decrease in food waste and the number of items being recycled to not only increase the students’ knowledge in sustainability and learning in other subjects but also help them establish a lifetime of environmentally conscious habits.

What’s next for the Hillcrest Green Team? Well, they’re already working on phase three to donate leftover, prepared foods at the end of each week to local shelters. He’s also a great storyteller and we gain a lot of insight from the life experiences he shares with us.

As for advice he’d give those who might be considering volunteering at Parish, or otherwise, he used the famous Nike quote: “just do it.”

And he lives by his own suggestion . . . well, and that of his wife of 56 years who told him once he retired “… for better or worse … but not for lunch honey, so go find something to do.” Since then, he’s been a Saturday docent at the Meyerson Symphony Hall, a Wednesday tour guide and team leader at The Frontiers of Flight Museum and is currently a Monday and Friday docent at President George W. Bush Museum as well as volunteering Wednesdays here at Parish.
