We are thrilled you have picked up the 2016 Parish Summer catalog. Each year Parish Episcopal School opens its doors to the community to experience Parish Summer. With over 315 camps in Academics, the Arts, Athletics, Languages and STEM, there is truly something for everyone. Camps run from May 31 to August 24, 2016. We hope you will join us!

all about summer How do I register?

Registration includes the Registration Form, the Parent Authorization Release Form and a $30 non-refundable registration fee per child. You can register either online or by mail.

• Online: www.parishepiscopal.org/ summer.

• You will be directed to Ultra Camp to complete your registration.

• If you do not have an Ultra Camp account, you will be asked to set up one.

• This account will allow you to make and schedule payments, add camps, print statements, etc.

• Mail: Send completed forms and payment to Parish Summer 2016, 4101 Sigma Road, Dallas, Texas 75244.

How do I add or change classes after I’ve registered?

Camps can be added at any time through your Ultra Camp account.

If you need to make a change to your camp, please email us at EXTEND@parishepiscopal.org or call 972.852.8744 for assistance.

Is there a deadline?

All online and hardcopy registrations must be received by Thursday at noon in order to be processed for classes and camps starting the following Monday. If enrollment occurs after Thursday at noon, a $10 rush fee will be imposed for camps starting the following Monday.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept cash, check and credit cards (Master Card, Visa, American Express, Discover). We also offer flexible payment options so your credit card can be stored and charged as your camp approaches.

Do you offer volume discounts?

Yes, a 5% discount will be automatically applied to any account which spends more than $1500 for summer programs, and a 10% discount is automatically applied to accounts exceeding $2500.

When selecting camps, what grade do I select?

Grades listed indicate the grade the student will be in the fall. Primer students can select either Kindergarten or 1st grade classes, whichever is closer to their age. Students must be at least three years old by June 1, 2016.

All children must be completely toilet trained without assistance from an adult to attend camp.

Are there two Parish Episcopal School campuses?

Yes, there are two campus locations.

The majority of our summer camps are located at the Midway campus, but we do have offerings during select weeks at both campuses. Please refer to your summer catalog for campus locations.

Midway Campus: 4101 Sigma Road, Dallas, TX 75244 Hillcrest Campus: 14115 Hillcrest Road, Dallas, TX 75254 Where do I drop off and pick up?

You will receive a confirmation email for each registration which will provide pick up and drop off information. You can access these confirmations at any time via Ultra Camp’s document center. Students will be escorted to carpool areas and will only be released to individuals showing a carpool pick up tag in their front window or authorized individuals listed in a child’s Ultra Camp account. For the safety of your children, we will verify individuals who do not show a carpool tag at pick up. Children attending the All-Day Camp or our Afternoon Camp (3:306:00pm) must be signed out each day by a parent or an authorized adult.

A designated lunch time will be built into all-day classes. For students going from a morning to afternoon program, lunch will be taken from 12:00 to 12:30pm. Lunch is fully supervised by counselors and instructors. We will offer a weekly meal plan which can be purchased at the time of your camp registration or may be added as late as the Thursday before a camp’s start.

The weekly meal plan will be offered through Sage and will offer a variety of kid friendly offerings including glutenfree and vegetarian options. Menus will be provided via our website and your confirmation email. If you choose to not participate in the weekly meal plan, students may also bring their lunch.

Please note that lunches will not be refrigerated.

What should my child wear each day?

We suggest that your child wear closed toe shoes and dress in comfortable, summer attire. PreK students should have a change of clothing including underwear and a second pair of shoes in their bag at all times. Instructors will contact you if your camp requires special attire at any point during the summer.

Do you offer extended care?

Yes, we offer an All-Day Camp that runs from 7:30am to 6:00pm in addition to offering morning (7:309:00am) and afternoon (3:30-6:00pm) camps that can be added to your child’s schedule.

Will outdoor sports camps continue when it rains?

Yes, all sports camps have contingency plans and unless parents are contacted by email, camps will run as scheduled.

How do I add an authorized adult to my account?

Login to your Ultra Camp account.

Scroll down in your My Account page and on the right hand side click the + next to Pickup Authorization. Then click the blue link titled Add/Edit Pickup Authorization. Once you are in the next screen, click the blue link titled Add on the right side of the Non-account Member section. Follow the system prompts to add your new authorized adult.

How do snacks and lunch work?

Campers will have the opportunity to have a snack at 10:00am and 2:00pm each day. Please pack snacks if desired. Campers attending Midway camps may purchase snacks from the PAWS store with cash or through a PAWS account. Your confirmation email will include instructions on how

Will classes be held on Monday, May 30th and/or Monday, July 4th, 2016?

Parish Summer will be closed on both Monday, May 30th and Monday, July 4th to observe the holidays.

How do you handle the health needs of the students?

We have a nurse on staff during the summer. If your child has specific health concerns, please contact Parish Summer administration at 972.852.8752 for further direction.

How do you handle discipline?

Parish Summer reserves the right to request the withdrawal of any student whose conduct is unsatisfactory or who fails to conform to the Parish code of conduct. No refund will be made to any student who withdraws or is dismissed from the summer session after the program has begun.

Does my child have to be a Parish Episcopal student to attend your summer camps and classes?

Parish Summer welcomes students from any school, race, color, religion and national or ethnic origin.

My student does not attend Parish.

Will your for-credit courses apply outside of Parish?

Please check with your school’s administration in advance to be sure that credits transfer.

How do you handle refunds?

Camp cancellation/refund requests must be emailed to Nancy Powers at npowers@parishepiscopal.org at least 14 days prior to the camp start date in order to receive a full refund less a $50 processing fee per camp. Requests received between 7-13 days before the camp start date will be 50% refunded.

Refunds will not be issued for requests received less than 7 days in advance of the camp start date, except in cases of emergency.

Everyday Heroes

Week 1: May 31-June 3 Not all heroes wear capes. During this week of camp, we’ll celebrate and learn about the heroes in our community.

From paramedics to firefighters and even sanitation workers, we will explore how these roles impact our lives through demonstrations, hands on activities, crafts, presentations and even tours of vehicles and equipment!

Please Note: There will be no camp on Monday, May 30th in honor of Memorial Day.

The Four Seasons

Week 2: June 6-10 Come explore all of the seasons this summer! We will square dance for our Fall Harvest, celebrate all things frozen (penguins, polar bears, snow, oh my!)

Pay It Forward

Week 3: June 13-17 During this week campers will participate in a number of community minded projects. We will plan, create and execute an epic LemonAID

Mad Science

Week 4: June 20-24 Put on a white lab coat and join us for a week of wacky experiments and exploration! We will do some mythbusting, create and shoot model rockets, and build egg parachutes, just to name a few activities. Each camper will receive an honorary Egg Head degree at the end of camp for their contributions to mad science.

Awesome Animals

Week 5: June 27-July 1 Did you know that an estimated 10,000 new animal species are discovered each year?! This week will be dedicated to animals of all shapes and sizes. We will learn about their habitats, their unique characteristics, diets, babies and more through crafts, experiments and other hands-on activities. The end of the week will conclude with a live animal presentation where campers will get to meet some very special animals in person!

Earth, Wind & Fire

Week 6: July 5-8 Forces of nature are unpredictable, awe-inspiring and fascinating. We will explore the power of Mother Nature and her many tricks and treats.

Campers will learn about hurricanes and record a weather forecast, make a tornado in a bottle, create an erupting volcano, just to name a few of the awesome activities planned for this week. Please Note: There will be no camp on Monday, July 4th in honor of Independence Day.

Magic Time Machine

Week 7: July 11-15 During this week we will build a time machine and hop through space and time to visit different eras. We will examine the history, art, food, clothing, technology and language of the time. Enjoy a sock hop, fly kites with Benjamin Franklin, paint with the cavemen and more!

Star Wars

Vinci’s window, replicate some of his experiments and inventions like his ornithopter, and write backwards and decipher secret codes as seen in his famous notebooks.

Around the World in 5 Days

Week 10: August 1-5 Campers will become world travelers during this whirlwind week of exploration. Each traveler will be issued a Parish Summer passport and one, round-the-world ticket. We will make stops in several countries and will eat their food, view their landscapes, hear their music, make their crafts and wear their clothes. This week is sure to give your camper wanderlust!

Summer Olympics

Week 11: August 8-12 Join us as we celebrate the 31st Summer Olympics being held in Rio de Janeiro. Camp will begin with the opening ceremonies and the parade of nations. We will spend the week competing in both individual and team sports and activities that have been inspired by the Olympics. We will also discuss the history, traditions and spirit of this storied event. We will conclude with a closing ceremony and medal presentation.

Primetime Play

Week 12: August 15-19 Get ready to play games, perform and race as we bring some of television’s most popular shows to Parish Summer.

From Amazing Race to Minute to Win It to America’s Got Talent, campers will take part in friendly team competitions to win multiple prizes. During this week, campers will learn about collaboration, problem solving and good sportsmanship.

Living Literature

Week 13: August 22-24 This week is dedicated to the written word and bringing it to life. We will read classic children’s books and then make the words come off the page through crafts, plays, challenges and other activities. Make potions like Harry Potter, eat green eggs and ham, learn the truth behind the story of the three pigs, and more! Please Note: This camp only runs Monday through Wednesday as Parish’s 2016-17 school year starts on Thursday, August 25.

Week 8: July 18-22 Join the Resistance and battle the First Order in proper Jedi style. We will build light sabers, rescue Hans Solo from carbonite, and make lava slime as we attempt to defeat the Dark Side. This camp will be out of this world!

all day camp FAQs Do I need to drop off at 7:30am and pick up at 6:00pm?

No, you may drop off and/or pick up at any time during the hours of 7:30am to 6:00pm.

How is drop off and pick up handled?

As you register for a camp, you will receive a confirmation which will detail drop off and pick up instructions for that particular week. Once you have an Ultra Camp account, you can go back and reference these instructions at any time in the Document Center. If you have additional questions after reviewing your confirmation, please let us know at EXTEND@parishepiscopal.org.

What is the typical schedule of the day?

Even though no two days are the same, we do have a rough schedule* that we follow: 7:30 - 9:00am - Campers are dropped off and congregate to play on the playground 9:00 - 9:30am - Morning Rally (songs, cheers, announcements, birthdays, etc.)

9:30 - 10:30am - Campers work on activities, crafts, etc.

Do I need to pack a lunch and/or snacks?

An optional weekly meal plan is available for purchase. If you choose to not participate in the meal plan, please send your child with a lunch. Campers will have a morning and afternoon snack time.

Art - Printmaking

Grades: 3-7 Most art is the product of one, but printmaking allows artists to make multiple versions of their work.

During this class we will use different surfaces to craft our prints including foam, wood, cardboard and linoleum.

Students will be given instruction on cutting, etching, carving or drawing a design into a plate. They will learn how to apply ink or paint to the plate, press the paper and transfer the image. Each artist will compile their completed pieces into a printmaking portfolio which will showcase their work from the week.

Grades: K-12 (classification based on skill level, not grade) Beginners: Students will be introduced to the world of chess. Here they will learn piece movement, tactics such as pins, skewers, forks, double, attacks, discovered checks, double checks and how to check-mate with a combination of various pieces. The students will learn how to develop their pieces in such a way that they will work as a cohesive unit. They will learn how to score (write down their moves) so that they can review and improve their play.

Intermediate: Chess clocks will be used at this level, and students will be introduced to tournament play.

Grades: 9-12 Participation in a science research program is an excellent way for upper school students to build and distinguish their resumes for college admission.

Participants will have the opportunity to contribute to ongoing Parish upper school science research projects, or they may choose to establish new projects.

The end result is a research poster and possibly an article to submit to high school science research journals.

Students will work with Tracie Román who has an undergraduate degree in chemistry, a master’s degree in bioanalytical chemistry and a master’s degree in molecular biology. She has worked in research laboratories in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, UT Southwestern Department of Biophysics, University of Virginia, Medical University of South Carolina and Furman University.

Ms. Román also has presented her research to the National American Chemical Society and Biophysics Society meetings, and is a contributing author of a research journal article published in Science magazine. The summer research program is tailored for each student, and the duration and intensity of the program is divided into three options including two, four and eight week commitments.

Lacrosse Camp – Soft Stick - Coed

Grades: 1-3 Lacrosse is the nation’s fastest growing sport, and Kidokinetics is pleased to partner with U.S. Lacrosse to introduce this sport to kids. This camp is designed to introduce and develop tactical, technical and cooperative skills, and will create a solid foundation for those interested in participating in the sport in the future. This program teaches the game in its basic form while campers engage in exciting play indoors on a smooth surface. All equipment is provided including specially molded, gender-neutral plastic sticks and soft balls. This is a non-competitive camp designed to build self-confidence and teamwork in a fitness oriented setting.

Learn To Ride A Bike

Grades: K-3, 4-8 Come play America’s favorite sport in a non-contact environment. Kidokinetics partners with NFL® Flag Football (NFF) to bring this classic sports camp to Parish. Panther Extravaganza

Grades: 1-5 Panther Extravaganza is for sports enthusiasts! This camp is instructed by the Parish Episcopal physical education department, each of whom also serves as a varsity coach with vast experience in his/her specific sport. The program features a range of sports including basketball, baseball, football, floor hockey, golf, kickball, soccer, traverse wall climbing, team handball, volleyball and other group games. The camp takes place on our fields and gym.

Martial Arts - Spar Wars: Jedi Training Academy

Grades: 1-4, 3-6, 1-6 There is a new threat to the galaxy and the only hope lies with the Resistance and a new band of Jedis. Upon arrival your child will be issued their very own lightsaber/padded sword which they will use to conquer Darth Vadar’s Gauntlet of Doom. Jedi training will take place under black lights with glow in the dark padded weapons. Aspiring Jedis are invited to wear fluorescent clothing and/ or Star Wars costumes. Grades: 3-6 Partnering with USA Rugby, Kidokinetics is proud to offer its Rookie Rugby camp to introduce this fun and exciting sport to elementary age boys. Rookie Rugby is the U.S. brand of flag rugby. It is a safe, noncontact, easy to play game. Campers learn the basic rules and fundamental skills associated with the sport while also developing a love for physical fitness through rugby games and drills.

Skills such as ball handling, passing and kicking are learned along with the physical components associated with the sport such as body control and spatial awareness.

Run, Jump, Throw!

Grades: 3-6 Run, Jump, Throw is a sports and fitness training program developed

by USA Track and Field and sponsored by the Hershey Corporation. This hands-on learning program gets kids excited about physical activity by introducing them to the basic running, jumping and throwing skills associated with track and field activities. The elements introduced are highly relevant to the development of all fitness and sports skills. Campers will be introduced to 20 different learning stations which include activities such as dynamic warm-up with balance and coordination exercises, running form and technique, standing broad jump, softball throw and one-legged hop. The program culminates with a non-competitive track meet with application of learned skills and celebration of achievements.

Grades: 7-12 (Mother & Daughter), 10-12 Effective self-defense is a combination of self-awareness, effective strategies and street tested skills. This class offers young women the opportunity to develop a set of verbal and physical skills in relation to self-defense.

Physical skills and strategies will be taught that can be used against a

bigger and stronger opponent. Topics covered include date and alcohol facilitated rape, myths about women and self-defense, prevention, physical skills training and dealing with armed attackers. The course culminates in simulated attacks where specially trained males wearing protective gear will challenge participants in the most common ways young women are approached.

Moms, join us Week 5, for a special mother and daughter version of this camp.

Self Defense - Protect Your Neck - Boys

Grades: 9-12 Are you a parent of a son in high school or college? Are you concerned with their safety as they journey towards independence? Young men in our society may face a variety of violent situations ranging from robbery to assault, even sexual assault. AJ Tucker, a U.S. veteran who fought in Irag, will lead this session teaching students the strategies and skills that will best ensure their survival and safety. AJ owns a personal training business, has earned his black belt in Jiu-Jitsu, and competes in tournaments in addition to teaching self-defense.

Soccer - Parishkicks - Coed Grades: K-8 Focused on building individual skill and confidence on the ball, this dynamic camp is designed to serve players of any ability from beginner to seasoned veteran. The camp focuses on receiving the ball, maintaining possession, efficient and creative ball movement, and finding the back of the net! Using individual and small group activities, we offer maximum touches on the ball within fun, competitive games. The camp is designed and run by Parish soccer coaches, Craig Savage and Kevin Rock. Coach Savage is the boys’ varsity head coach and has 20 years’ experience coaching high school, club and Olympic Development soccer in Atlanta and Dallas. Coach Rock is a native of Trinidad and Tobago where he played on multiple youth national and select travel teams. He currently works with Parish’s middle school teams.

Grades: 3-7 Improve your game with Coach John Griffin, head coach of Parish’s varsity girls’ softball team. This camp will focus on proper fielding, throwing, batting, base-running and other fundamental softball skills. We will cover game situations and proper mechanics.

Speed Camp With Coach Nady - Coed

Grades: 1-12 Join us for Speed Camp, one of the most popular camps offered each summer. This coed camp is hosted by Coach Nady and several current and former collegiate athletes. Speed Camp focuses on the most important skill in almost any sport...SPEED! Campers will be taught proper running form, given technical analysis, and will be shown skills and drills they can use year round. This camp will help any athlete’s speed prowess and execution, no matter their skill level or age.

Ultimate Frisbee + Spikeball

Grades: 3-6 This new and exciting camp brings together two high energy sports into one fun-filled curriculum. Combining the non-stop movement and athletic endurance of soccer with the aerial passing skills of football, Ultimate Frisbee is played by two teams on a field with end zones, similar to football.

In addition to learning the physical skills needed to play, kids are also exposed to sportsmanship and integrity. Spikeball, a little known sport growing in popularity, is a fast-paced game played with two teams of two, one ball and a trampoline like net. The object is to hit the ball off the net past the opposing team’s players. Spikeball requires quick reflexes, immediate decision making, agility, balance and coordination.

Yoga For Athletes

Grades: 3-8 During the first half of this camp, athletes will follow a fitness oriented yoga practice which will improve core strength, stamina, breath work and focus. Their increased flexibility and balance will help them stave off injury on the court or field. During the second half of the camp, athletes will move to the weight room where they will be led in a series of strength, speed and agility training exercises. This camp is perfect for any athlete looking to gain a competitive edge.
