is proud to call himself a Parish “Lifer.” Beginning Parish in kindergarten, Ford spent the next 13 years walking the halls of Parish, where he developed lifelong friendships and a strong academic foundation that inspired him to study civil engineering.

Ford recalls his most influential teacher, Dolores Gende, who helped him realize his potential in the field of physics.

“Honors Physics was by far my most difficult class freshman year, but Mrs. Gende was such an amazing teacher I decided to stick with it. By the end of the year, the class I almost dropped became the class I loved the most and the reason I decided to major in engineering.”

When Ford heard that Mrs. Gende would be teaching AP Physics his senior year, he immediately added it to his class list for his final year at Parish.

Commencement Welcome

While academics played a large role in Ford’s Parish life, his passion for sports is one of the reasons he loved the programs available at Parish. He was starting second baseman on the varsity baseball team and will always remember the good times and hard work with his Panther teammates. As he prepares to head off to college at The University of California at Berkeley, Ford plans to play on a club golf team and to participate in as many intramural sports as possible.

As a recent graduate, Ford has a new perspective on his time at Parish and feels the School’s community is second to none in the Dallas area.

“I love Parish for so many reasons, but mainly because there are a lot of other schools that are our size where you just don’t hear the kids having the same kinds of relationships with their teachers that we do. Our teachers are incredible; they help us grow academically and there is always someone to talk to and help us with anything, even other subjects.”

Ford considers his family a “complete” Parish family.

Not only did he have both younger siblings attending the School, but his extended Parish family makes for a long, long list. He has enjoyed being a part of the Parish community for so many years and has known many of his friends since kindergarten. While those “Lifer” friendships are special, according to Ford, for him and his classmates it was also always exciting to know that every year there would be new students to meet and welcome to their grade, ultimately forming close relationships along the way and developing a cohesive sense of pride.

These experiences definitely factored into Ford’s college decisions. After looking at several schools that specialize in civil engineering, Ford chose Berkeley for the new experiences that he felt he couldn’t get at other schools. He is looking forward to more than just a four-year degree, with aspirations of completing a graduate program in petroleum engineering.

Before leaving for Berkeley in the fall, Ford will spend his summer with his family and friends in Argentina, Nantucket and Laguna Beach. And of course, several Parish friends will join him along the way.

Gabby begins her studies at the University of Virginia in late August, where she plans to major in science and minor in dance. Her goal is to one day become a world-class surgeon who also happens to perform with a modern dance company.

With her history of accomplishing many things at once, she believes she is well prepared to handle such a schedule.

tenure as a Parish student in 7th grade. Her time at Parish has been full of diverse academic, athletic and service achievements. She feels the accessibility of the programs and the commitment her teachers had to her advancement at Parish is what has helped her accomplish so many goals.

“Parish definitely prepared me for a demanding college experience and I believe that Parish gave me the confidence I need to do all that I do,” said Gabby. “My teachers and advisor helped me perfect time-management, so I was able to feel like I could do it all.”

And, do it all, she has! Gabby was the captain of the softball team at Parish, and the starting secondbaseman. She was a member of a competitive dance team, practicing over 20 hours a week, with KJ Dance in Plano. In addition to her service work and athletic accomplishments, Gabby completed all AP courses her senior year and was accepted into the pre-med program at the University of Virginia. And, did we mention she still had time to play her “undercover” role on campus as none other than Parish’s mascot, Pete the Panther!

While “being” Pete was fun, it also served a purpose for the Parish community. Sure, Pete cheers the crowd on at football games, puts the “pep” in Pep Rally and represents the joyful spirit that is Parish; but, most importantly, Pete welcomes and envelopes new and old Panthers on campus, making them a part of the quintessential Parish experience. A service to the School community, indeed.

Gabrielle “Gabby” Struckell began her

Gabby’s service doesn’t stop there. She has a strong community service background both locally and globally. Her family has long been involved with the Dallas chapter of the American Ireland Fund and, after witnessing her older brother’s work in northern Ireland with boys in segregated communities, Gabby saw a need for a similar effort among girls in the area.

Without hesitation, she started the Belfast Sisters youth project in Belfast, Ireland. This youth project was developed to bring Catholic and Protestant girls together through dance, from across segregated inner-city communities. The goal of each camp is to foster a positive self-image among all the girls, and help develop relationships between the two groups.

This summer, Gabby and five members of KJ Dance, along with the entire Struckell family, will travel to Belfast for the second annual weeklong camp. Upon her return to the States, she will depart for college.

The University of Virginia was an easy choice for Gabby and her interest in medical research was a large deciding factor. “They have an incredible focus on research, and my Parish science teacher Ms. Roman received her master’s degree there,” said Gabby. “I am excited about the prospect of getting in on some early research opportunities.”

Leaving Parish has been difficult for Gabby, as she and her classmates are very close and became even more so this year. She feels that the Senior Lounge played an instrumental role in their growing friendships; that they all feel a connection with one another and know each other so well because of their unstructured time together. This camaraderie among her senior class is what she will miss the most about Parish.

WHAT ARE “LIFERS?” Technically, students who have spent 12 or

more years at Parish. But, more than that, “Lifers” represent the support, comfort and challenge that is the Parish family, evident throughout the entire student body, prekindergarten through 12th grade. Over the past eight graduating classes, Parish has had 140 Lifers.

Here we feature 28 Lifers (nearly 30 percent) from the Class of 2014!
