WORDS OF WISDOM Parents . . . you have placed us in an environment where there is mutual respect between students and teachers. The interactions resemble more of a mentoring relationship here. . . .

This school models, contrary to the outside world, that two poles can get along. Parish has the unique opportunity to start positive conversations because there is mutual respect here that seems to be lacking elsewhere. . . . it makes me a better thinker. It forces me to realize, there is no one right way. Sometimes there are many right ways. But, we can’t see that, if we don’t respect each other enough to listen to each other. And I think that’s my generation’s job: to reintroduce the power of dialogue. . . . we cannot aspire to make anything, to change anything, or to fix anything, if we don’t just talk to each other. So teachers, thank you for respecting us and letting us talk. Parents, thank you for choosing an environment that lets us talk.

America, get ready for us to talk.

Jack Love – Senior Dinner

When I think about all the accolades and achievements of each of my peers in this class, one word comes to mind – EXTRAORDINARY. . . . In our differences, we have found a commonality that unites us in every aspect: the members of the class of 2018 strive to be great, leaving an example for those who will come after and being people of impact in this ever-changing world. Parish is an extraordinary institution where our capabilities were stretched and boundaries pushed. . . . To the friends and families, know that your contributions have helped get us here today and for that we thank you. To our teachers with us, your tireless effort and determination have pushed us to become extraordinary men and women, and for that we thank you. And to my fellow classmates, this journey has turned us into brothers and sisters. Although our Parish experience is nearing the end, we’re just getting started with life.

My obsession with graduating waned because I had allowed myself to just live in the moment of senior year, as cheesy as it sounds. I went to see performances and games of my classmates that I may not have made the effort to in past years. . . . buying into the community in times where senioritis was in full effect gave me the opportunity to appreciate and cherish my last months on campus. . . . My ardent desire to graduate had transformed into tangled feelings of sadness and nostalgia. . . . So, as weird as this sounds, I want to thank all of you for making me sad, because it speaks to the relationship we have as a class. . . . We are an eclectic mix of athletes, scholars, performers, and everything in between. Despite different interests, we have created a bond that I feel is apparent to us and the Parish community . . .

Sure this is a pivotal moment and whatever, but let’s talk about something real: peanut butter and jelly is the perfect sandwich. . . . A simple act, a simple sandwich, but simplicity, monotony even, can contain such beauty. . . . it’s the simple things, the repetition, that I will miss the most about Parish, because it was in those little moments . . . that I found my greatest mentors, my most caring friends, my most invested advocates, and myself. . . . But this is not a little moment. This is a culmination of an 18-year-long PB and J. . . . it was one of the first steps, the moment when the bread was pulled from the plastic bag for the spreads to be layered on, for my passions to form. Parish then continued . . . to inspire and challenge every aspect of who I was and who I could become. They gave me the avenues and at times the much needed speed bumps in order to become the leader I am today. . . . They did so for my peers, and they continue to do so for all those that follow.

Andrew Jennings - US Faculty Commencement Address

I don’t ever think I was 100 percent sure that musical theater was what I wanted to do. This is what other people expected me to do, so I might as well do it. Right? . . . I got rejected. I got rejected from every single program except waitlisted at one. One. I am not saying I regret applying, because I don’t think I would’ve started searching for something I was more passionate about if this hadn’t happened to me. . . . I immediately thought that I would never discover what I loved and what my purpose was. But I took time and then I felt a sort of relief. . . . As students we are going out into the world and it might take months, it might even take years to get what we want. Don’t look at rejection as a bad thing, take it on your chin and wear it. Wear it for the world to see, because in the end there will be multiple stops along your paths. . . . it doesn’t even matter where you do it, just as long as you succeed wherever you go. So be bold: take risks, work hard, and don’t give up.

Margaret “Maggie” Bossalini – Commencement Farewell

Thank you to the class of 2018 for having me speak today. . . . Although I’ve had plenty of conversations with you all over the past four years, they have mainly been for a much, much smaller audience and about a topic of your choosing, in a roundabout fashion – so this is nice. . . . what will prove to be more memorable than any of your individual or team accolades will be how you treated each other and the relationships you built during your time at Parish. . . . you are not, or least you should not be, a finished product at age 18 . . . Unlike physical attributes, character is developed over time and through experience; it can continue to grow throughout our lives, should we choose.

This fact, that we can improve ourselves every single day, is why character becomes so highly valued: who we are and how we treat others is largely the product of our own decisions; we are in control. . . . remember that our school will always value your collective and individual contributions to the community.

After Parish, I plan to fully pursue a career as a singer/ songwriter and producer. Although I will not be attending university next year, I plan on building up my artistic profile in order to improve my chances of getting a scholarship to attend a musical college. I will mostly be focused on writing/ recording new original music, improving my digital footprint, and performing at venues in the Dallas area. I’m not worried about where I end up in my career, as long as I’m playing guitar I know I will be happy.

. . . I can honestly say that I’ve never been more relieved than when I got my acceptance letter from Parish in April of 2016. Little did I know, though, the sheer impact that Parish would have on me, as it was here that I would have my first real first day of school since kindergarten. . . . Throughout my past two years here, I have had the privilege to meet and learn from some of the most wonderful and exquisite people on the planet. . . . there is not one memory here that I would want to exchange for anything in the world.
