Parish Episcopal School’s travel abroad program offers lifelong lessons Parish Episcopal School believes in giving students the opportunity to engage in purposeful and authentic learning. Sometimes that means picking up a paint brush, a pen, a camera or a welding torch to demonstrate one’s knowledge and skill. Other times, it calls for students to pack their bags and travel outside their community, so they can help others and challenge their own ideas about the world around them. This task is made easier by ParishAbroad, an educational program that breaks the barrier between the classroom and the “real world.”

ParishAbroad students got a chance to travel to Europe in March and to India in June. Eighteen Upper School (US) students took in the history and scenery of Paris, France; Engelberg, Switzerland; and Munich, Germany. Thirteen US students got an inside look at life in Mumbai, Dharavi and Chinchoti during an enriching, purpose-driven trip to India.

ParishAbroad offers three trips for US students each year. The global leadership program is an exclusive partnership with the World Leadership School in which Parish students travel to Mumbai, India during June. This travel opportunity is for students who have a passion for service and leadership. Cultural and Linguistic Immersion is a summer program that offers students an insight into the language of Spain or France and the history and culture from an insider’s perspective. The Spring Break program offers students an opportunity to travel with peers on a cultural trip to Europe.

“Traveling teaches you about yourself, and about the world,” said Jania Hoover, Ed. D., Upper School Social Studies and Subject Area Coordinator. “I encourage students to step out of their comfort zones and take advantage of these opportunities.”

Hoover was part of the Spring Break Europe trip which also included stops in Vaduz, Liechtenstein and Salzburg, Austria (Mozart’s Birthplace).

“The kids loved visiting the salt mine in Salzburg,” noted Hoover.

“We also enjoyed the cable ride to the top of Mt. Pilatus in Switzerland and visiting Omaha Beach and the D-Day American museum in Normandy.”

Students had time to soak up some of the culture and cuisine in each location. They also viewed art, artifacts and sculptures as they navigated the Louvre Museum, enjoyed a night cruise on the River Seine and biked through the gardens at the ornate Versailles Palace.

Each city offered an adventure and another history lesson.

“My favorite part of the ParishAbroad trip was Paris and Switzerland,” remarked Akula Sharanya ‘18. “Paris was a really good way to start the trip because it helped us get the feel for Europe and how everything works. Paris was also really fun because we did so many walking tours and went to so many different places; it helped us bond as a group. I think Switzerland was great because it allowed us time to reflect and experience the hospitality of a small town.”

Most of the tours were new and exciting, while others, such as the Dachau Concentration Camp Museum, took on a more sobering tone.

“I would say that seeing a historical site helps you learn about it better,” said Grant Carrington ’20. “When we went to the concentration camps, the museum and the video set the scene for us, as well as the cold and rainy weather.”

The goal of ParishAbroad is to raise the global competency of Parish students through purposeful and meaningful travel. Plus, the program focuses on improving group dynamics with student travel companions and with the people they meet during the journey.

October 21, 2017 at Katie’s family’s ranch near Bryan, Texas. The couple met their freshman year at University of Oklahoma where Paul graduated in August 2016 with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. He currently works for Alliance Engineering, an energy consulting company in Dallas. Paul proposed to Katie in Red Square in Moscow, as she is on a Fulbright Scholarship, teaching English in Russia.

Christopher Rivas ’08 proposed to Esther Leal on June 25, 2016. Chris is u currently employed with Dallas County as a Technical Analyst/Trainer. ➑ Amshi Stephenson ‘11 & Eric Humphrey ’10, Parish sweethearts, were engaged on May 9, 2017 in Cancun and have already booked their wedding venue in McKinney, TX for a 2018 wedding.

29, 2017 at the Manor at Coffee Creek in Edmond, OK. The couple met at a church in Oklahoma City and dated for about 2.5 years. Kelsey currently works at Chesapeake Energy in the HR department and is also pursuing her MBA at the University of Oklahoma.

•• Carly James McKie ‘08 and Eric McKie were married on February 4, 2017. The couple exchanged vows at Secrets Playa Mujeres Golf and Spa Resort in Cancún, Mexico. decided to get her real estate license. She and her husband were flipping houses and she liked real estate more than expected. She specializes in Far North Dallas/Richardson. When Sally is not working, she and the kids can be found in Pilot Point, Texas at their family’s distillery. Her husband is Co-Owner of Western Son Distillery as well as the new Whistle Post Brewery. Sally is most proud of the distillery’s connection with the Peter Burk’s Unsung Hero Fund which provides care packages for soldiers overseas.

•• Andrew Harris PDS ‘97 married Raquel Lovern on March 21, 2015, after dating for seven years! A mere 15 months later, son Hunter Steele made his debut on June 14, 2016. Andrew is a commercial representative for Regency Gas in Dallas & Raquel is owner & lead designer of R Love Floral, a creative design studio specializing in weddings and events.

They enjoy golfing, hiking and traveling together, as well as their little men Hunter and Scooter (their four-legged, furry child). No date has been set for the wedding, but they are shooting for spring 2018. Matt is President of Bay Island Woodworks in Dallas, and travels to trade shows all over the country and to Honduras where the wood shop produces the finished products. Katie is a model for the Campbell Modeling Agency here in Dallas. They have two dogs, Jack and MJ, along with two hens, Virginia & Chic Pea. Augusta Abene ’08 moved to Orange County in October 2016 to pursue •• acting and to work at Disney. Augusta currently works hotel-side in Disney. She is a registered extra with a casting company, and auditions for film and TV full time. She is getting married on November 25, 2017 in Texas to Jeromy Bailey. The couple met while working for a children’s theater in Arlington in July 2013. Jeromy proposed this past summer during the same theatre camp where they met, in front of all her family, friends and the students. Jeromy is a full time drummer and is currently drumming for Luke Pell from JoJo Fletcher’s season of the Bachelorette.

She primarily does editorial work for searches at the vice president level and above – branding resumes, editing/proofing interview analyses and client updates, etc. – and works for the Women’s Insurance Networking Group (WING) and the Insurance Supper Club (ISC). The latter organizations promote female advancement in the insurance industry and Shelby helps spread their messages through social media and organizes events nationwide (including DFW). Shelby enjoys travelling and continues freelancing for the Columbian (the magazine for the Columbia Club, a professional club in Indianapolis). She was recently on the committee for her first Northwestern reunion in fall 2016.

Eric Musselman ‘13 graduated from Duke University in May 2017 •• and was awarded Dean’s List with Distinction. To receive this honor, he ranked in the top 10 percent of his class for the semester in the engineering school. This summer Eric is interning on the Cardiac Rhythm Management team at Boston Scientific in Minneapolis, MN. In the fall he will return to Duke for a year to earn a Masters of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering while continuing his research in Dr. Warren Grill’s Neural Engineering Lab. Lauren Sandstedt ‘13 is a 2017 graduate of University of Missouri.

•• Lauren studied Marketing in the Trulaske College of Business. She has accepted an offer for the prestigious AT&T Business Leadership Development program - a program that AT&T recruits for nationwide and only selects 20 students. She will be move to Atlanta, Georgia to begin her career in July 2017. The two-year program has an end goal of creating professionals to return to Dallas to work at AT&T headquarters.

Lauren was one of the first ParishConnect participants this past year after launching the alumni program. She thanks Parish for its support throughout her ongoing process of interviewing and job seeking. She states “your willingness to meet with me and connect me with other professionals has given me an invaluable experience in networking and business. 5• Paige Hughes ’14 is attending University of North Texas, majoring in

Public Relations and minoring in Spanish, with plans to graduate in May 2018. Paige wants us to note that Parish helped immensely with her Spanish: “I tested out of 12 hours.” She’s a part-time makeup artist working freelance for Grand Slam Glam, a career that kicked off in college. She plans on continuing to do makeup after graduation and also work full-time as a PR specialist, hopefully in Dallas. Follow her makeup on Instagram @RaiseYourGloss. Paige landed a summer internship with SMPR Texas | California, a public relations company in Dallas, TX.

In April, her team finished 4th at West Region Invitational, led by Katie. Katie also showed up every alumnus that participated in the Parish Alumni Holiday event at TopGolf – everyone was so impressed!

Joe •• Riney ‘15 is a junior at the University of Oklahoma studying finance.

Also known among his peers as the “OU superstar,” Riney serves as the Director of Programming for Soonerthon 2017, the official philanthropy event of the University of Oklahoma Campus Activities Council and one of the top 15 dance marathons in the country and #1 in the Big 12. All money raised benefits Children’s Hospital Foundation in Oklahoma City.

In fall of 2016, Thomas joined the Navy, took the past semester off and went to Navy boot camp at Great Lakes, IL. He then headed off to A-school for Yeoman training in Meridian, MS and graduated from A-School in May 2017. He is currently classified as a Navy Reservist.

5• Steven Hendricks ‘16 is at Bennington College in Vermont. He studies

Japanese language and culture as a part of his “Plan” (Bennington’s equivalent of a major), and will teach in a pilot program at Bennington Elementary School next year. This past year, he completed his fieldwork term in User Experience at NYC’s Google office. He performed in an opera during second semester, and he hosts a weekly show about gaming on the college radio station.

5• Valorie Grace Mallory ‘16 is in the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core (BIC) Honors program, majoring in International Studies and Cultural Anthropology. Recognized for her outstanding achievement as a college freshman at Baylor University, she was selected to be a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, and is on the Dean’s Academic Honor List.

October 24 & 25, 2016 - The Parish Alumni numbers are growing and growing in Los Angeles, so the Alumni team jetted off to LA for a visit and to treat former Parish students to lunch and dinner.

December 19, 2016 - Kicking off the holidays at the Alumni Holiday Par-Tee at TopGolf Dallas. Largest holiday party to date!

January 22, 2016 - The Alumni office went on the road for an Alumni dinner at Taverna in Austin. The group had a good time reminiscing about the good ‘ole Parish days, and the Alumni team loved catching up and encouraging everyone to get through that spring semester and work world.

April 12, 2017 - Parish alumni (21+), joined the Parish Alumni & Parish Fund Team for the 2nd annual Alumni Parish Fund Happy Hour at City Council Restaurant & Bar. Alums supported their alma mater and the Parish Fund with an entry fee, and won a variety of door prizes.

Senior Gift Helps Open Doors to New Activity Center Families give more than $340,000 for Class of 2017 Lobby at Gene E. Phillips Activity Center Dedication set for Sept. 8 Grand Opening

Between the day Sophie Alford first arrived as a PreK student at Parish and the moment she crossed the stage to collect her diploma, she experienced more than a decade of learning, growth and friendships.

“Parish is home to me,” said Sophie. “I grew up at Parish, and all my teachers and mentors here have helped shape me into the person I am today.”

Other graduating seniors and their parents who share this sentiment joined together to make this year’s Senior Class Gift. At more than $340,000, it is the largest class gift of the last five years and creates a lasting legacy at Parish.

The class chose to direct its gift to establishing the Class of 2017 Lobby at the new Gene E. Phillips Activity Center. The lobby will usher students, families and visitors into the multipurpose facility, which will be a hub for academic, arts, athletic and community events, for decades to come.

It is a long-standing tradition, as families donate to the class gift, for seniors to honor teachers and staff who made a particular impact on their lives. Sophie was among them, naming 14 teachers who influenced her through the years.

Honoring Those Who Serve Service is at the core of the Parish mission.

By honoring teachers and staff who supported and inspired them as they make their class gifts, graduating seniors acknowledge their service and make a touching gesture of gratitude to those who mentored them.

“You never expect or even predict a student is going to honor you. It’s incredibly validating and touching to hear how your life’s work is making a difference. I keep all my cards from through the years as reminders of my purpose as an educator.”

Graduating family gives back through Campaign Lisa and Bill Griffin are among the Class of 2017 parents who gave to both the Senior Class Gift, as well the Campaign for new Parish facilities. The family, which has been a member of the Parish community since their son Michael’s 7th grade year, made generous Campaign gifts totaling $120,000.

Your son Michael graduated this spring. What was it like watching your child walk across that stage?

Lisa: It was one of the proudest and most joyful moments of my life as a parent, yet also filled with a touch of sadness. As a mom, of course I had a lot of tears. I don’t think there where many dry eyes in the auditorium! It’s a tremendous feeling seeing what your child has accomplished and knowing he is fully ready and equipped to move on to college.

Bill: Watching Michael walk across the stage was certainly emotional, but also fulfilling,

knowing what an incredible high school experience he had and having confidence in his readiness for the next chapter of his life. Watching the kids throughout the day, it was so apparent how close-knit and inclusive this class is. They show tremendous support for one another, something we witnessed time and again throughout senior year.

What inspired you to invest in the Campaign as you’re closing this chapter at Parish?

Bill: We really felt it was a matter of responsibility – to give back to the school that had

been so impactful in Michael’s life and, further, to acknowledge and support the exciting momentum of the School. Parish has a unique opportunity to make it’s mark within the Dallas private school community as a truly differentiated place that not only prepares kids for the rigors of the college curriculum, but also fosters recognizing the really important things in life, such as being happy and enjoying the path to future successes. One of the things we have always admired about the Parish community is that the families here all seem to do their part in one way or another, with money or time or both. Lisa and I feel very blessed to be a part of this school.

Lisa: Yes, and regarding the need to expand the School’s physical campus, we know

first-hand how important outlets outside academics are to helping a kid grow and stretch.

Football was a really important part of Michael’s Parish experience, and so was being in different theatrical productions. Parish has accomplished so much while making do in terms of facilities. Imagine what the students will be able to achieve when we have the space and the facilities to take it to the next level.

Lisa’s and Bill’s son Michael will be attending University of Kansas in the fall. Fortunately for Parish, that doesn’t mean the Griffins will be leaving our community. The couple plans to stay involved in fundraising for the School, and Bill will be joining the Board of Trustees in the 2017-18 school year.

Parish Feature Story (continued from page 3) “The students were able to develop global competency by being forced to function in places in which English is not the preferred language and American customs are not always the norm,” added Hoover. “We hope they learned ways to adapt to changing and unfamiliar situations.”

Students on the 10-day trip to India once again partnered with the World Leadership School, whose mission is to “empower young leaders to find innovative solutions to the world’s pressing problems.” They navigated busy streets, played cricket on the beach, explored the local flower and spice markets, enjoyed traditional foods and learned about the significance of sacred sites.

Raunak Trivedi ‘18 and Ben Campbell ‘18 wrote about the first day in Mumbai on the Parish blog: “We toured Banganga Tank, a sacred site to Hindus contained within the city. Our city tour continued to Malaba Hill and the Hanging Gardens, and then to Gandhiji’s house (we added the ji out of respect). At Gandhi’s house we were able to learn about his life and read letters that he wrote to Tolstoy, Roosevelt and even Hitler.

We also saw the small room where he worked and read. The tour of the city ended at a spot where they take care of the sacred cows of the city.”

Students also shared in the bonding experience of women washing laundry together and completing a community service project to paint the exterior of the schoolhouse a bright, cheery yellow (the color that symbolizes education in the Hindu culture).

There was plenty of laughter and learning during the visit and a few tears as the travelers and hosts said their goodbyes.

“I didn’t know it was possible to feel so connected to a family, to have learned so much from them, without sharing a language.” said Jenny Lewis, Parish parent, chaperone and assistant to the Head of School. “While I had an intellectual understanding of how powerful the ParishAbroad program is before this trip, that understanding has definitely evolved. . . . What our students ‘planted’ in India and what we took with us – broadened perspectives, more nuanced cultural awareness, a spirit of global collaboration, compassion and respect…It was a transformative experience for everyone!”

At the end of the Mumbai tour, ParishAbroad Director Rick Dunn and Trivedi took a taxi to the Crawford Market to purchase school supplies for the kids of Chinchoti. The “School in a Bag” project is Trivedi’s Leadership Project and is part of a collaborative effort between ParishAbroad and Parish’s Leadership Institute.

Starting in June 2018, Middle School students will have the opportunity for summer travel through ParishAbroad. The trips - offered to 7th & 8th graders - will tie into school curriculum, community service and leadership.

Students immerse themselves in the culture in the village of Chinchoti

The travelers also toured the slums of Dharavi, known as the “heart of Mumbai.” Parish students Maggie Bossalini ‘18, Katie Liddell ‘20 and Lilly Pappas ‘18 wrote about their experience on the ParishAbroad blog: “While walking through Dharavi we experienced a range of emotions that deeply affected our attitudes toward each other and the understanding of what a slum is. Most importantly we learned that a slum is not a place full of crime and poverty, but a place where communities come together to work hard for the things they love and care for.”

The blog goes on to remark how Parish students were struck by the resilience, ingenuity and hospitality of the residents in Dharavi.

“We were then greeted by plenty of smiling faces that were intrigued by our own culture and experiences. We played many games with the students and that allowed us to [communicate] with them. After having a wonderful lunch with the students, we girls were treated to a beautiful henna tattoo on our hands.”

In the remote village of Chinchoti - a four hour bus ride from Mumbai - families opened their homes to Parish students and introduced them to their daily routines: collecting water by the well,

Parish is partnering with NoBarriers for a 10-day Alaskan adventure.

It includes sea kayaking in Resurrection Bay, hiking on the Harding Ice Field and in Denali National Park, camping, and working and tending to local farms. Students will also study more about permafrost, wildlife, seas, and the climate and culture of America’s largest and most sparsely populated state.

MS students may also join a 10-day trip to Belize in conjunction with the World Leadership School. Belize offers a living laboratory of mountainous rainforests and a coast with beaches, mangrove swamps and reefs for students to study the effects of climate change. In addition to their studies, students will serve their “host community” where they will live and work for the week.

“It goes without saying that both of these trips will be amazing experiences, socially and academically,” said Jay Riven, Head of Middle School. “Afternoons will be full of cultural activities, sports, and specifically designed learning sessions to help students reenvision themselves and their place in the world by understanding the perspectives of local students and community leaders.”

The curricular foundation of ParishAbroad spans all subject areas and includes a three-dimensional approach to developing global competency: it creates a positive disposition toward cultural differences and values; increases fluency in other languages; and develops a deeper understanding of world history, geography and the health, economics and climates of different countries. Sydney Ariagno ’10 and Sara Scully ’09

Volunteer Spotlight:

Kristen Twomey receives Bondy-Lee Award Kristen Twomey is always quick with a smile or a laugh and doesn’t take herself too seriously, but she certainly doesn’t joke around about her dedication to Parish Episcopal School.

Parish Episcopal challenges students to be creative learners and bold leaders, prepared to impact our complex global society. Parish alumni, Sydney Ariagno ‘10 and Sara Scully ‘09 are doing just that as they embark on new challenges in their careers:

Sydney Ariagno ‘10 • Washington University 2014 graduate and soon to be Weill Cornell Medical College graduate • One of five students named the 2017 Medical Research Fellow from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).

“I am so honored and humbled to receive this award,” said Ariagno. “This fellowship gives us the opportunity to devote one year in our medical training to full-time research in an area we are passionate about; I will be studying pediatric brain tumors.”

At one year, Ariagno will share her research at the American Society of Clinical Investigation-Association of American Physicians Joint Meeting on April 20-22, 2018 in Chicago.

Sara Scully ’09 • DePauw 2013 graduate • Finalists to the Fulbright Program that promotes international exchange and education through a selective, merit-based grant award program.

As a part of the program, Scully will be working as an English teacher in Taichung, Taiwan for 11 months.

“I will be ingratiating myself in the community and promoting intercultural understanding,” said Scully. “I’m so excited not only for the opportunity to experience another culture, but also to serve my country as a diplomat overseas.”

“I think it’s a special place because it’s where my girls are; they love it,” said Twomey. “If I can provide any level of support to their teachers, their administrators, other parents, new students, new families and share the way I feel about this school and make them love it as much as I do, that’s just an everyday goal for me.”

Twomey spent the 2016-17 school year serving as the president of the Parish Parents’ Association, so she spent more time than usual on the Midway campus. She jumped into the planning of Gala and even whipped out her British rocker accent and best 80’s rocker outfit for the Gala video. . . . she has spent six years volunteering at Parish [in numerous roles, activities, events, etc.], so it was no surprise that she was honored with the 2017 Bondy-Lee Award. . .

“She has been a constant and consistent presence on the campus for both the faculty and staff and for the families,” noted Jennifer Wilson, Head of Lower School. “Then at the very core, she is just someone who loves Parish and gives of her time freely. The whole concept of the Bondy-Lee award is someone who volunteers with a gracious and grateful heart and she does that every day.”
