Some Patients Need Specialist Care It is a fact that most sick or un-well people get better after having seen the doctor and that they resume all normal activities afterwards. But for some, many even, it is not all that simple as they will only improve, or get better or heal completely, after the intervention of a specialist medical professional such as an oncologist, dermatologist or eye specialist, the ophthalmologist.

This professional, the ophthalmologist, is the eye care specialist right at the top of their profession as they are medically trained professionals that can do all the work a GP does, or the work of the optometrist and optician. These professionals all offer certain services and abilities to assist with eye care, but the ophthalmologist is the one with the highest levels of education and knowledge that the others do not have.

Therefore they are the ones to attend to eye surgeries, and even then they specialize in certain areas of eye treatment and eye surgery. Some may prefer to work in areas to correct vision such as, say, cataract surgery, or surgeries to remove cancerous growths, or surgeries to remove an eye completely because of a threatening situation such as cancer. necessary to stop further cancer. Of course this is an extreme example, but it is done to save lives.

On the upper lid, for example, the blepharoplasty is done to help improve peripheral vision when an eye lid starts to droop and interferes with normal sight. This is therefore done for medical reasons, or as a function that improves a person’s ability to see clear as they once did in the past.

But it can also be done to make an unattractive, droopy lid look better and normal once more – the same reason it is done with the lower lid, the so-called bag under the eye which is done, mainly, to look more youthful and attractive.

Ophthalmologists that specialize in these procedures do these all the time, but they also do many other surgeries such as those mentioned earlier to save vision – and even a life.

There are, of course, many other times when a good eye surgeon’s attention is needed, for example when an entropian repair is called for, to repair an eyelid that turns inward. This can happen as a result of age, or because of an injury, even a skin disease or inflammation. If not attended to the patient may soon suffer from their cornea becoming damaged or infected.

An ophthalmologist can reverse the negative effects of entropion, just as they can ectropion, which is the opposite: the eyelid that turns outward. It typically happens to the lower lid and can develop as a result of, for example, facial paralysis, eyelid growths and even too much exposure to the sun. Of course these are mere examples of what the eye specialist does and can do. There are many others. What is important to remember is that help is always available and a good ophthalmologist or eye specialist never far away – not in London or any other big centre.
