Therefore the blepharoplasty to the upper lid can be done for either medical or for cosmetic reasons, to either improve peripheral eyesight or help the patient to look – and therefore feel – better.

The blepharoplasty for the lower eyelid is one of the most common procedures to help improve appearance and is done all the time, even to younger people who are more aware of their appearance. Of course surgery to the lower lid may also be needed for medical reasons such as, say, cancer; however, in terms of improving appearance it remains the most popular and most common surgery on the eyes.

The blepharoplasty is a fairly straightforward procedure that seldom takes longer than an hour, most of the time less, and it is done under local anaesthetic. To have these procedures done may involve cost for the patient as medical insurance may not cover all of these; the patient simply finds out before the time – or carry the cost themselves.

Good ophthalmologists that offer the eye bag surgery – and the upper lid lift – will often offer additional services such as eye socket and orbital surgery – the type of surgery needed to repair fractured bones in the eye socket, for example.
