AYUTTHAYA ARTSY HOUSE

Type : Academic project Year : 2021 Location : Ayutthaya, Thailand

This project is a vacation home for a university professor.

Program requirements are a cafe, gallery, and housing units for owners and guests/artists who come to exhibit at this place. The site is in Ayutthaya along the Pa Sak River.

There is a restaurant that has the same owner to the north of the site.

The design intention of this project is to connect the house with the restaurant to create interaction between them.

And create a semi-exterior-interior space that is commonly found in traditional Thai houses, corresponding to the location of the building in Ayutthaya, an ancient city.

Conventional planning

Reverse zonning Add a promenade to extend the time for access and reverse the zoning to the public zone nearest to the river. which provides the most beautiful view to everyone.

Space and form Group of houses connected by a central area that is a courtyard and gallery.

It is covered with a steep gabled roof that is suitable for the tropical climate.

CIRCULATION DIAGRAM

There is a circulation that separates guests, owners, and service to prevent crossings. There is a common area where the owners can meet with guests in the gallery and courtyard.

สงบ (adj.) /Sa-ngob/ Thai word that means serene, calm, peaceful The project is a spa, yoga studio, and restaurant located along the Kok River. The design intention is to create a tranquility space cut off from the outside world. Open view of the river. Each type of massager is separated to maximize privacy for the user.

The Patio Samyan, is a small community mall that is like a patio of the house for everyone in the nearby community.

The program requirements are small office, retail shops, and flagship stores. The design intention of make this place like a community’s patio that people in the community can use comfortably. Therefore, emphasis on creating common areas. So that everyone can come and do various activities flexibly. To add liveliness to this place and this communityy.

Type : Academic project Year : 2023 Location : Chiangmai, Thailand

This project is a new Chiangmai bus terminal. that must accommodate many tourists with various vehicles, including buses, vans, Taxi, and personal cars.

The design intention is to develop the city’s mobility infrastructure. while creating opportunities for local people.

Therefore, there is an alley that can be used as a flea market or for various activities. It benefits local people. and present local products to outsiders at the same time. page 22

WATTHANA DISTRICT OFFICE Type : Academic project Year : 2023 Location : Bangkok, Thailand

This project is an office, which is a high-rise building. In urban areas that have high density combined with a complex environmental context, This resulted in the design intention to replace green space for the city and help connect the local people in the area with the new office building that is about to be built.

Site surrounding The site is a long-term rental in the temple area. It is surrounded by a school and funeral area of a temple.

Building setting Determine the orientation of the building, with concern to the connection between offices, schools, and temples, allowing the area in front of the building to be an open space as a pocket park for the city because the area surrounding the site has a very high density of buildings.

Transportation The project is located next to Sukhumvit Road, BTS Ekkamai Station (can build a pathway connecting to the building). There is a motorcycle taxi and bus stop in front of the site. Overall, it’s a very easy site to access. but must organize the traffic between Office workers, students, and people who come to the temple.

Form development Develop details of the building, letting the podium be a retail shop. and the tower is an office.

CIRCULATION DIAGRAM Retail shops users Access to the building from BTS Ekkamai, personal vehicles, and sidewalks. The podium of the building can be used. and can use the low-zone elevator.

Office workers Access to the building from BTS Ekkamai, personal vehicles, and sidewalks. Access to the office tower requires a high-zone elevator with controlled access on the first floor, office hall area.

Students This building acts as a connecting walkway from the school to BTS Ekkamai. Students can walk from the school to the second floor of the building and then walk through the connected pathway to BTS.

This project is a music hall located in Lumpini Park where people often come to exercise every day. And there are many other activities. Therefore, the intention was to design a music hall that would not only respond to its function but also be consistent with and promote activities in this public park.

PRISON BREAK

WHY Prisons, designed to confine individuals who have committed crimes, often fail to meet acceptable standards of living, raising questions about whether harsh conditions are justified. Traditional prison designs, including the panopticon model, focused on isolating and mentally breaking down inmates rather than reforming them. Despite recent efforts to create more humane and rehabilitative environments, high rates of recidivism persist. A proposal suggests a departure from traditional prison architecture, advocating for open, fluid spaces that promote interaction with the outside world.

Drawing from the concept of “blurred boundaries” this approach aims to reduce recidivism by fostering a sense of belonging. However, reconciling freedom and community within the confines of a prison poses a challenge, as the space is meant to punish individuals for their crimes.

BOUNDARY “Our design process involves three key steps. First, we make sure the jail securely contains prisoners by having separate cell units on higher floors, giving inmates a view of activities below.

Next, we integrate community spaces by extending and bending the building’s perimeter in a star-like shape, creating a welcoming gateway at the base. This blurs the lines between inside and outside, promoting community interaction.

In the third step, we prioritize natural light by using a curtain-like base that optimizes the building’s exposure to sunlight through simulation. This not only maximizes natural light inside but also invites outsiders to be part of our community.

Overall, our design aims to balance secure containment, community integration, and natural light optimization, creating a functional and inclusive environment within the jail facility.”

2D TESSELLATION

Create a line pattern in 0.6 x 1.2 m which vary each lines in different slopes decreasing the sense of level in section, then connect the naked dots in order to join continuous lines flowing horizontally and vertically.

REDUCE

Diminish the planes by half in order to create sparse community units allowing more light and ventilation, especially the sense of community.

In our prison architecture concept design, we introduce a gradient boundary, distinguishing a restricted zone at the top and open space underneath. We’ve crafted two types of units: compact cell types and open community spaces, each divided into multiple units for various purposes. An innovative feature is the “Healing Area,” where we incorporate educational components and external facilities to foster skill development and communication among inmates.

The concept relies on the fluidity of modules, employing irregular borders to minimize perceived levels while maintaining a grid system for the Monoceros algorithm. Open curves of 2D tessellations seamlessly connect, resulting in a 3D functional cell module. Another unit type emerges in 3D with reduced density, providing a sense of freedom in community units.

This free-flowing space exposes prisoners to natural light and ventilation, promoting mental well-being. Both cell and community units feature designated gathering areas to encourage social interactions. Despite changes in conditions for potential breakouts, the open layout design makes it easier for wardens, as well as community members, to keep an eye on each cell. page 50

The units that are derived from tessellation offer flexible connectivity between almost every side; here are some examples of aggregates. page 51

RULES & SLOTS Gathering up tessellation modules was not complicated because mostly they can connect seamlessly with each other.

However there are main rules purposely to create an effect of gradient and opening up for community.

Initial Setup The shape derived from main approach of the site creating enormous welcoming entrance surrounding by open space modules, as if you walking into a park. After that, the shape drawn people in the middle where can look up to see the cell types. Composing with a tube rising to the sky, it acts as a lighthouse for warden to observe prisoners. By the other hand, openings possibly allow outsiders to watch insiders.

Gradient Probability Gradient Probability, the most important rule sets of the project, take a crucial part of blurring boundary concept. From the boundary and units, the tower acts as a full gradient module. The probability divides the tower horizontally into two parts - the upper and lower parts, with a gradient in between. The upper part comprises restricted cell types to ensure incarceration, and the security increases as it goes higher. Conversely, the lower part consists of open spaces, and the prisoners become more interactive as it goes lower. Additionally, we allow empty modules to fit in the lower part, creating a more diverse range of spaces.

EVALUATION Floor to Ceiling Lines and Standard Deviation (SD) TOP MIDDLE BOTTOM

The main idea is to generate the best design option with the most flowing space in the lower part and vice versa. To evaluate with tangible indicators, as the concept playing around with the idea of gradient, the measure of standard deviation (SD) of the floor-to-ceiling height at any given points. The more it fluctuated (High SD), the better gradient is. it means that the lower part has the most variety of height then it would erase the sense of level and most blurring boundary while the upper part which are prisoner cells are restricted in rigid grid with easy to organize.

To achieve accurate results, the model is divided into three horizontal sections, and the floor-to-ceiling standard deviation is calculated for each section separately (each floor-to-ceiling lines colored red, orange, and yellow from bottom to top). The fluctuation value is then determined to define how blurred the boundary of the scheme is when considering the overall result.
