PLAY WITH PURPOSE Annie Wright’s Preschool program provides the building blocks for learning core academic skills. At the same time, these young learners play…a lot. That’s because our teachers know that three to five year-olds learn best through imaginative, creative play that develops out of and expands each child’s own natural curiosity. We never forget that early childhood is a magical time of individual growth, discovery and development. So play—structured and unstructured—lies at the heart of all we do.

5 Ways to Strengthen Your Child’s School Readiness Help fortify their emotional intelligence, concentration, self-control and more BY SANYA PELINI, PH.D. Not all children make a successful transition into school. According to Megan McClelland, a child development expert at Oregon State University, up to 25 percent of children experience difficulties when they start school. Being ready for school is not just about your child acquiring academic skills such as having a certain number of words in their vocabulary by the time they enter school, being able to identify certain written words or knowing how to count to a given number. School readiness also refers to the development of certain social and emotional traits that determine whether or not kids will successfully transition into school. In one study of 276 at-risk children ages 3–5, McClelland and other OSU researchers sought to determine whether specific interventions would help improve school readiness. While children in some groups participated in movement- and music-based activities, those in the control group did not receive any intervention. The researchers found that the children who had received intervention had higher scores for self-regulation than those who had not participated in the activities. We now know that the best results are obtained when schools and families work together to ensure that children are ready to engage in and benefit from learning experiences. The good news is that relatively simple techniques can be applied at home to support your child’s school readiness. Children can learn self-regulation skills through games and activities that are inexpensive and easy to teach at home. Here are five things you can begin doing today to strengthen your child’s school readiness:

1. Play games that strengthen your child’s self-regulation skills. In the study mentioned above, the researchers found that games that encourage children to pay attention and follow specific instructions are critical to their success in their early years and beyond. Researchers proposed a different version of the “red light, green light” game and changed the rules to encourage the children to pay attention. For example, color cues were used to tell the children what was expected of them (“orange means go”), and then the cues were later changed (“orange means stop”). In a different study, the same researchers found that introducing variations to the “Head, Shoulders,

Knees and Toes” song could help teach kids to listen and pay attention. They found that asking children to do the opposite of what they were told (for example touch their toes when they are asked to touch their head) helped develop their focus and concentration.

2. Work on reinforcing your child’s concentration. It is not uncommon for young children to struggle with processing information. The more instructions you give them, the harder it will be for them to follow through. Giving your child only a few instructions at a time can make it easier for them to understand and remain focused on what they are expected to do. If your child is struggling with completing instructions, asking them to repeat what they are expected to do can make it easier for them to follow through. Specific games such as puzzles and mazes can also help improve your child’s concentration, but you must choose games that are developmentally appropriate. Rather than focusing on your child’s chronological age, focus on what they are actually capable of doing.

3. Foster your child’s emotional intelligence. Your child’s emotional intelligence is a key factor in determining whether or not they will adapt to the school environment. An emotionally intelligent child knows when to ask for help, but a child who has yet to develop their emotional intelligence skills is more likely to have a meltdown when faced with difficult emotion-provoking situations; they may even adopt inappropriate behavior to camouflage an inability to deal with difficult feelings, such as anxiety. Helping your child to identify and name their emotions and those of others, talking about your own emotions to show your child that emotions are normal, and helping them to identify appropriate ways of responding to big emotions can reduce emotion-driven behavior and increase their school readiness.

4. Help your children practice self-control. In today’s culture of instant gratification, many children struggle with self-control. The good news is that there are simple activities to help teach your child self-control. For example, playing games that require all players to take turns is an easy way to increase self-control skills. Encouraging your child to make decisions within a parent-controlled framework can also help them practice self-control. Even simple questions such as “Will you take your bath now or after your snack?” or “Do you want to wear the black shoes or the red ones?” teach kids to reflect on different options and make decisions.

5. Adopt a reading culture. Reading is one of the easiest ways to help increase your child’s school readiness. It can awaken their curiosity, teach them new words and reinforce communications skills. In other words, reading

develops your child’s vocabulary, language and social skills. When reading to young children, it is important to encourage them to participate by asking questions or making comments about the story or the characters in the book you are reading. For example, you can point to a picture and say something like, “How do you think he feels?” Or you can make connections with something your child already knows: “Look, there’s a lion here — do you remember what other animals we saw at the zoo?” or “Look at the orange butterfly. Do you remember the color of the butterfly we saw at the park yesterday?” Children’s school readiness has been associated with academic, social, emotional and behavioral benefits in childhood and beyond. The earlier you start preparing your child for school, the better the chances are that your child will meet with success both in school and in life. Surefire Indoor Play Ideas From a Preschool Teacher’s Bag of Tricks Dance, move, create, sing, make music and have a blast! Northwest kids are used to gearing up to go outside: hats, jackets, rain boots and gloves. But sometimes (particularly during a pandemic), staying inside is the only option, and you need a quick game plan for fun. Here’s a grab bag of easy kids’ activities. Toys, technology and rules not required. Just add imagination!

Music and movement 1. Freeze dance A classic! All you need is music, and the only guideline is to freeze when the music is paused. Encourage kids to “freeze” in fun poses or with funny faces. Use a variety of musical styles and tempos. Tip: An older child can stop and start the music while you dance with younger ones.

2. The sleeping song Here are the short lyrics: “Sleeping, sleeping, all the children are sleeping. And when they woke up, they were all ________________.” Fill in the blank with various animals, insects or even inanimate objects, and let their imaginations run wild. Kids love acting like cats, snakes, and even robots or babies! As soon as one thing has run its course, begin the song again in a quiet voice as the children stop and pretend to sleep until the next thing is called. Keep cue cards for yourself, or let the kids be the “caller.” They can even help make the flashcards (for example, write “snake” on one side, and on the other draw a picture of a snake). Keep the cards handy; they’ll want to play this one again and again.

3. Indoor obstacle course Push aside some furniture and practice gross motor skills without breaking any priceless antiques! Set out a laundry basket and use balled-up socks to practice throwing and accuracy. Tape down some yarn or string for a makeshift balance beam. Do moves in place, such as running, jumping and hopping. Add yoga moves, use a timer and cheer them on. There is an infinite number of possibilities here. (Get more great indoor obstacle course ideas on ParentMap.com.)

4. Copy dancing This game can be played with two to 20 participants, and it’s as simple as it sounds. One person dances while the others copy their moves. Kids love being the leaders, and imitation is, after all, the highest form of flattery. So, put on some dancing tunes and show off those moves!

Arts and crafts 1. Homemade collage with reusable materials Simply provide a few items that can be reassembled in different ways again and again. Arrange the items on a tray or placemat to make patterns, designs and objects. Since the materials are reusable, take a picture to commemorate each creation. Ideas: craft sticks, buttons, paint samples, fabric swatches, spare keys.

2. DIY stuffed animals You really can make a lovable stuffed animal (or insect!) with only four things: markers, construction paper, a stapler and recycled paper. It’s such an easy activity, but it gets the kids excited every time. Put two pieces of paper together, draw your animal’s outline and then cut it out, making two identical shapes. Decorate, color and add as much detail as desired. Then staple the two pieces together about halfway. Now for the fun part: stuffing! Use pillow stuffing from a craft store, or just rip and ball up paper, and begin stuffing it into your creation. When fully stuffed, staple it closed and you’ve got a keeper!

3. Squiggle art Each player gets a piece of paper, makes a squiggle on it and trades with someone else. That person then draws a picture out of the squiggle. The beauty of this activity is in its simplicity, as children see that you can turn any mark into art. It’s fun for the adults to see what kids come up with, too!

4. Melted crayons If you have old, broken crayons hanging around, then you have an instant craft project! Reuse those old crayons by making them new again. Unwrap the paper from around the crayons, arrange them in a muffin tin in a single layer, and pop the tin into a 200-degree oven for about 10 minutes. Allow the melted crayons to cool, then stick the tin into the freezer to make it easier to pop them out. Just turn the pan over and you’ll have new cool, round crayons. Note: When the crayons are fresh out of the freezer, they may not color well. Warm them up in your hands to get them going.

5. Make a book Yep, just make your own books. Children have so many stories to tell — they just may need help writing it all down. Fold sheets of paper in half and staple them at the crease to make pages. After the story is written, go back and read it to the child so they can illustrate each page. This simple activity builds confidence, self-esteem and literacy skills.

The kitchen sink 1. Cooking When you have some extra time, make up an easy, hands-on cooking project for your next snack or meal. For children, cooking inspires sensory exploration, develops logical ordering skills and boosts confidence. Let them do as much of the work as possible. The easiest recipes are ready-to-eat foods such as sandwiches, wraps or rollups, and salads. Even sophisticated kale chips are kid-friendly; kids wash the kale and pat it dry, tear the leafy parts off the stems into bite-size pieces, toss them in olive oil and spices and spread the pieces on a tray. Adults operate the oven and then everyone munches away!

2. Gardening Kids love doing grown-up work, such as watering plants, and they excel at playing with dirt. Want some new indoor greenery? Let the kids help you plant, pot and water a windowsill garden! Kids also love learning plant and flower names.

3. Drama Put on a play using puppets, dolls or just yourselves! Use a favorite book or classic tale as your script — or make up your own story. Find props and costumes and play dress-up with younger children, or put on longer plays with preschoolers. Just act it out and have fun. If your child has a flair for the dramatic, they’ll take charge of this one, and it can easily last an hour (“Okay, pretend I’m the queen. Now you say …”). They love it when you just play along and let them be the director.
