Si può senz’altro affermare che in Italia il luogo elettivo della bicicletta sia la Bassa, ovvero la mezzaluna fertile solcata dal fiume Po, insomma la nostra Mesopotamia mono-fluviale. Nulla di più appropriato di un portico bolognese, di una piazza di Ferrara o di un lastricato mantovano – o magari della piazza di Brescello immortalata da Duvivier - per parlare di bici e di ciclisti.

Tuttavia, benché io sia di origine bassaiola, sono milanese, e la mia testimonianza – si è testimoni di un’esperienza, e in questo caso si tratta dell’esperienza di un ciclista militante – ne risente inevitabilmente. Il lettore di queste righe dovrà dunque perdonarmi se vi rintraccerà un eccesso di localismo. E comunque potrei invocare per giustificarmi due considerazioni: la prima, banale, è che Milano si trova comunque nel centro ideale della Bassa, con le sue diramazioni verso il sud della Lomellina e del Pavese.

La seconda, più capziosa, è di ordine sociologico: Milano di questi tempi può ben valere come la parte per il tutto, il caso singolo che mostra e contiene tutti gli elementi che la globalizzazione ha introdotto ovunque, certo forse non con la densità di Delhi o di Amsterdam, ma comunque in modo significativo e esemplare.

Glocal, insomma, come dice la doxa…Mi sento dunque in qualche modo giustificato a parlare a nome di molti parlando di me stesso.

Il piede si tiene sul pedale facendo presa

Yes, it has to be confirmed that the most striving place for the bike in Italy is the “Bassa”, in other words the Fertile Crescent ploughed by the river PO. Nothing is more appropriate than a Bolognaian arcade, a square of Ferrara or a Mantovian pavement - or maybe the Brescello square immortalized

by Duvivier – to talk about bicycles and cyclists.

However, even if I’m originally from the “Bassa”, I live in Milano and my testimony evidence of my experience, and in my case, it’s based on an experience of being an assertive cyclist – it is inevitably influenced.

The reader of my story will have to forgive me for the excess of systemic bias. I could giustify myself with two excuses: the first one, really simple, is that Milano is in the centre of the “Bassa”, with its outskirts to the south of Lomellina and Pavese. The second one, more critical, is sociological: Milano can be considered a part for the whole, the singular case that shows and contains all the elements that the globalizations introduced everywhere; not the same scale of Delhi or Amsterdam, but in a significant and exemplary way. Glocal like the doxa says … so, I’m almost justified to talk in the name of many when I talk of myself.

The feet are on the pedals, but only the tip of the foot engages, so it seems like tiptoe pedalling, so the articulation of the central part of the foot remains free. The position, a heritage of the old cyclists used to pedal

quasi solo sulle cinque dita, si pedala “di punta” in modo che l’articolazione tra le dita e la parte centrale del piede sia libera e mobile. Questa postura, ereditata dai vecchi ciclisti sportivi abituati alla pedalata con gli arti ingabbiati nel punta-piede, si è sedimentata e naturalizzata e viene adottata spontaneamente anche sulle bici che non hanno punta-piede o fermo per la scarpetta. Questa è anche a mio avviso una differenza visibile tra il ciclista esperto e quello o quella che tiene tutto il piede, anche la parte centrale o posteriore, appoggiata al pedale. Lo si vede bene quando una leggera salita consiglia di alzarsi dalla sella: se non si pedala di punta non ci riesce. Lo stile dell’esperto non si vede insomma dalla prestazione velocistica ma dal modo di pedalare che mostra un certo stile.

La prima volta che sono andato in bici avevo quattro anni. Sono caduto immediatamente in un fosso, ero a casa dei miei zii in Veneto. Mi sono preso una broncopolmonite. Poi, più tardi, mi è stata regalata una bici quasi da grande, una Bianchi “misura ventiquattro”, rossa con parafanghi cromati. Però ero ancora troppo piccolo, così dovevo pedalare di traverso al telaio. La prima bici vera e propria era una “Learco Guerra” – i campioni di ciclismo, si sa, sono soliti a volte dare il proprio nome a piccole aziende specialistiche, Coppi, Moser, Bottecchia – comprata usata dal Signor Marostica, un ex corridore. Un giorno mi si è spezzato in due il tubo diagonale del telaio e ho dovuto abbandonarla. Ma da un po’ di anni il mio equipaggiamento si è arricchito in modo forse eccessivo: due vecchie Bianchi per la città (una di riserva, non si sa mai), una Cinelli “da corsa”, obsoleta ma eccellente, per qualche passeggiata sul lago: cambio Shimano Ultegra, telaio in acciaio

This one is also a visible difference between the expert cyclist and the non-expert, placing all their foot on the pedal. If you have to ride uphill you need to get out of the saddle: if you are unable to pedal with the tip of your toes you won’t able make it. The expert’s style is easily recognized by these pedalling styles, more than his speed.

The first time I rode a bike I was 4 years old.

I immediatly fell in a ditch, I was in Veneto, where my relatives lived. The consequence was a bronchopneumonia. Later, I received a gift, an adult’s bike, size 24” Bianchi, red with chromed mudguards. But I was still too little, so I had to sit on the top tube and pedal.

My first own and real bike was a “Learco Guerra” – most champions usually endorse their names to frame makers, Coppi, Moser, Bottecchia - bought of second-hand from Mr. Marostica, a former rider. Then, one day the down tube split in two, so I had to throw it away. However a couple of years later my equipment was enriched maybe excessively: two old Bianchi for the city (one spare, no one knows why), one Cinelli “racing bikes” out of date model but excellent, for some rides on the lake: Shimano Ultegra gears, steel frame with chromed lugs. A real luxury, pratically a vintage bike. Last, but not least, a hand-made bike with Brooks saddle, a lavish gift that I hesitate to use, it is in my bedroom hanging on a hook.

But my understanding of the bike it is still the one of the town and of the fatigue. I don’t exactly know why but I continuosly think to the Ghisolfa bridge, probably a reminesence of the Milanese Mr. Testori tale … Or maybe; have you heard of the cartoon movie realized by Sylvain Chomet, Meeting

saldobrasato con congiunzioni cromate. Un vero lusso, ormai quasi una bici d’epoca. E infine una bici artigianale con sella Brooks, un sontuoso regalo che esito a usare, se ne sta in camera da letto appesa a un gancio.

Ma la mia idea della bicicletta è rimasta quella della città e della fatica. Chissà perché, mi si impone quasi sempre l’accoppiamento con l’immagine del ponte della Ghisolfa, sarà una reminiscenza dei racconto del milanese Testori…Oppure anche: avete presente quel delizioso film a disegni animati di SylvainChomet, Appuntamento a Belleville? La sequenza che mi ricordo meglio, che meglio mi risuona, è quella del protagonista che si affatica nelle salite, con i polpacci smisuratamente gonfi e sviluppati per l’eccessivo esercizio.

E’ dunque della città che parlo soprattutto. A questo proposito, vorrei fare un’affermazione che è anche un implicito commento alle foto di questo libro: direi che la bici è in bianco e nero. Cerco di spiegarmi ricorrendo a una riflessione del grande studioso di cinema André Bazin, scritta nel 1945 in piena epoca neorealista: “le virtualità estetiche della fotografia risiedono nella rivelazione del reale. Un riflesso sul marciapiede bagnato, il gesto di un bambino, non dipende da me distinguerli nel tessuto del mondo esterno; solo l’impassibilità dell’obiettivo, spogliando l’oggetto dalle abitudini e dai pregiudizi, da tutte le scorie spirituali in cui l’avvolgeva la mia percezione, poteva renderlo vergine alla mia attenzione e pertanto al mio amore. (…) L’esistenza dell’oggetto fotografato partecipa (…) dell’esistenza del modello come un’impronta digitale. (…) realizza

in Belleville? The sequence that I remember better, that sounds best to me, it is the one of the leading actor that rides uphill with difficulty, with his ankles incredibly swollen and strong for the severe exercise.

So it is about the city life that I will talk about. By the way, and this is an implicit comment to the pictures of the book: I have to say that the bike is in black and white. I try to explain myself resorting to a remark of the great cinema scholar André Bazin, that in 1945 – in the neorealistic era – wrote: “the vir tual harmony of photography lives in the revelation of the real. A reflection on wet pavement, the gesture of a child, does not depend on me to distinguish them in the meaning of the external world; only the insensibility of the lens, stripping the object from the habits and prejudices, from all the spiritual litter in which my perception enveloped them, could make it all new to my attention and consequently to my love. (…) The existence of the object photographed partecipates (…) to the existence of the model as a digital print. (…) produces an image that partakes of the nature” (“Ontology of the photographic image”, it. tr. pp. 9-10).

Here, the important thing is the scenario, the mechanism of the outside world, in fact.

How the photography of the bicycle “creates an image that partakes of the nature”? What nature? The urban and everyday nature, where the mechanical object looks almost like a piece of street furniture, a plant, a flench, an arcade, a kerb, a road sign. So it becomes a sign of the daily effort, more

un’immagine che partecipa della natura” (“Ontologia dell’immagine fotografica”,tr. it. pp. 9-10).

Ecco, la cosa importante è lo scenario, il tessuto del mondo esterno, appunto.

In che modo la fotografia della bicicletta “realizza un’immagine che partecipa della natura”? Quale natura? La natura urbana e quotidiana, dove l’oggetto meccanico appare quasi come un complemento d’arredo urbano, una pianta, una ringhiera, un portico, un paracarro, un cartello stradale. Così diventa segno della fatica quotidiana più che esibizione di una moda o di un’abitudine chic. E per questo, in bianco e nero come parte della veduta urbana – i quadri di Sironi con i gasometri della Bovisa sono a colori spenti, come se fossero, appunto, in b/n. Non è l’oggetto “in posa” che ne rende l’essenza, ma la ringhiera o il muro o il palo o il cortile come habitat naturale. In questo senso, anche, il bianco e nero è il modo migliore per fare di questo scenario fotografato, casuale, quasi disinquadrato, “una rivelazione del reale” appunto come scriveva Bazin.

Giorni fa nel parc heggio di un supermercato di periferia mi è capitato di incontrare un’anziana gagliarda signora che stava slegando il suo velocipede, con la spesa appena fatta sul portapacchi. Mi guarda mentre sto arrivando a slegare a mia volta il lucchetto e pronuncia con una certa enfasi queste parole in milanese: Vutant’ànìnvutantàn! … ‘des me tukarà de ruesà su per la mùnta fin ala Bikòka … (1).

L’anima autentica del ciclista – cittadina, confidenziale, un po’ brusca, orgogliosa della dignità umana e professionale della propria fatica - mi si è improvvisamente

And for this reason, in black and white as part of the urban scene – the paintings of Sironi with the Bovisa gasometers are in dull colors, as they where, in fact, b/w. It is not the object ”posing” that makes the essence, but the railing, or the wall, or the pole, or the courtyard as natural habitat. In this sense, too, the black and white is the best way to do this scenario phothographed, casual, almost out of frame, “a revelation of the real” just as Bazin wrote.

Few days ago, in the parking of a supermarket in the suburbs I happened to meet an energetic old lady who was unlocking her bike, with her shopping bags on the rack. She looks at me as I walk in to unlock my own lock and says, with some emphasis, these words in Milano-dialect: Vutant’ànìnvutantàn! … ‘des me tukarà de ruesà su per la mùnta fin ala Bikòka …(1).

The true spirit of the cyclist – city woman, confident, maybe a little rude, proud of her dignity, human and professional, and proud of her effort – it was suddenly made clear in this remark. Unfortunately the lady is set off in a hurry without giving me the chance to express my admiration.

By the way: the cyclist and the bike in black and white require a technical counterpart of the same level. A few days ago I was at Drali, I was looking for a 23” wheel with an old rear hub Campagnolo six gears for my Bianchi, since what I have now is a badly-made Chinese manifactured hub.

Now the Drali is precisely one of supreme manifestations of this spirit that I am trying to decsribe. The shop, with is workshop, is located on the far southern outskirts of Milan. The Drali ‘s workshop-showroom is in a narrow street of tenements and even old

rivelata in questo motto. Purtroppo la signora è filata via senza darmi nemmeno il tempo di esprimere la mia ammirazione.

A questo proposito: il ciclista e la bici in bianco e nero richiedono una controparte tecnica all’altezza. Qualche giorno fa sono stato dal Drali, cercavo una ruota da 23 con un vecchio mozzo posteriore Campagnolo a sei pignoni per la mia Bianchi, dato che quello che ho adesso è un pessimo mozzo di fabbricazione cinese.

Ora, il Drali è appunto una delle sovrane manifestazioni di questo spirito che sto cercando di descrivere. Il negozio con il suo laboratorio si trova all’estrema periferia sud di Milano. L’officina-negozio-showroom del Drali sta in una stradina di case popolari e ancor più vecchie cà de ringhera che fiancheggiano Chiesa Rossa e il Naviglio, una pozzanghera di verde in mezzo alle case. E’ uno strano posto, ce lo si immagina vetusto e intriso di odori meccanici, ferro, olio, gomma. Invece la sua insegna è piuttosto moderna, si accede attraversando un piccolo e accogliente cortile-giardino e l’interno è grande e luminoso, doveva essere una specie di locale di servizio del condominio che lo ospita. Le pareti sono verde caserma e il pavimento è in clinker come le mense delle fabbriche. All’interno ci sono telai semilavorati con la marca “Drali” in evidenza, e coppe che testimoniano un passato sportivo, e grandi foto dei campioni.

Bene in vista quella di Coppi.

Non posso fare a meno di pensare allora al contesto che ho chiamato “bianco-enero”, cui questo scenario appartiene (Ghisolfa, Naviglio, fatica, bocce, città operaia e ciclistica…). E’ la stessa stirpe cui appartengono certe trattorie con pergola, dal Naviglio alla Magolfa al Torricelli all’Ortica. O quel fantastico magazzino di idraulica cui puoi accedere solo se sai che

“railing houses” lining Chiesa Rossa and the Naviglio, a puddle of green among the houses. It is a strange place, one imagines ancient and steeped in mechanical odors, iron, oil, rubber. Instead its sign is quite modern, the access through a small, cosy garden-courtyard and the interiors large and bright, it had to be a sort of service room of the building that houses it. The walls are the green of the barracks and the floor is clinker as canteens of factories. Inside there are bicycle frames partially finished with the logo Drali out and cups that bear witness to a great sporting history and photos of sports stars. Most obvious the one of Coppi.

I cannot help but think then the context that I called “withe-and-black”, which the scenario belongs to (Ghisolfa, Naviglio, fatigue, bowls, cycling and working class city …). It is the same race to which certain taverns with pergola belong to, from Naviglio to Magolfa to Torricelli at Ortica.

Or that fantastic stock of hydraulic tools which can be accessed only if you know that it exists, in a sort of crack in the space-time nature of the city, at the beginning of Corso San Gottardo (we are talking in Milan). For me the bike, and the bikes of these photos, belong to this scheme of things.

But the past as we know can be repeated and in these cases it loses its black-andwhite tones in favor of a color, so to say, dis-colored. There is another place where the bike is associated with another cliché, the tavern and its un-bottled wine. And in fact it is “Ciclosfuso” and is in an alley that opens onto the end of the Vigevano Road, near the station. You would’ve not taken note if it wasn’t for a signposted shape, anachronistic in its vaguely oriental fashion that indicates the place on the corner. But here we are somewhere other than the Drali, the origin

c’è, in una sorta di fessura spazio-temporale nel tessuto cittadino, all’inizio di Corso San Gottardo (si parla milanese). Per me la bici, e le bici di queste foto, appartengono a questa trama delle cose.

Ma il passato come sappiamo si può riprodurre, e in tal caso perde la sua tonalità bianco-e-nero a favore di un colore, diciamo così, seppiato. C’è qualche altro posto dove la bici è associata a un altro luogo comune, l’osteria e il suo vino sfuso. E infatti si tratta di “Ciclosfuso” e sta in un vicolo che si apre verso la fine di Via Vigevano, quasi alla stazione. Non te ne accorgeresti se un’insegna a bandiera, anacronistica nel suo fashion vagamenteorientalistico non te la indicasse sull’angolo. Ma qui siamo altrove rispetto al Drali, qui l’origine è ri-prodotta, il bianco e nero è a sua volta una citazione, fa parte di un’attenta scenografia: non solo bici e pezzi di ricambio ma anche rudi tavoli di abete e sedie prese da un magazzino di mobili industriali e cilindri di metallo per spillare il vino, e bottiglie e lavagne con indicazioni di piatti. Ecco insomma una creazione che appartiene all’altro coté della bici, quello modaiolo.

E dunque bisogna prendere atto di una trasformazione storica e non solo generazionale, che si potrebbe esprimere così: un passaggio dal bianco e nero al colore, dall’autentico alle virgolette, dal mezzo a buon mercato al mezzo di moda o di tendenza… non si può dimenticare che c’è in effetti un’evoluzione tecnologico-culturale delle bici: i colori, le forme, le posture e gli atteggiamenti vi concorrono.

Si potrebbe tentare a questo proposito una doppia classificazione, diacronicosincronica: ciclisti vecchi e nuovi, tipologie attuali dei mezzi e degli abbigliamenti.

is re-produced, the black and white is in its turn a reference, is part of a careful design: not only bicycles and spare parts but also rugged tables of Pine and chairs taken from an industrial furniture warehouse and metal cylinders to tap wine , and bottles and boards with description of dishes. That is in fact a creation that belongs to the other side of the bike, the fashionable.

So we have to take note of a historical transformation, not just generational, that can be expressed as: a transition from black and white to color, from the authentic to the inverted, from cheap transport to fashion or trend transport … we cannot ignore that there is actually a technological-cultural evolution of the bike: colours, shapes, postures and attitudes will contribute.

We could try to divide this proposition into two rankings, diachronic-synchronic: old and new cyclists, existing types of transport and of clothing. High heel shoe of 10 cm for the lady who does not sacrifices elegance even though means taking some risk, pilgrim sandals, sneaker, professional shoe, Clark shoe… And the old unobtainable clip to your trousers? This can be remedied tucking them but when you get off the bike you must remember to put in place the crease on the right leg of the trousers.

New cyclists, relatively recent alteration since the car was increasingly at fault.

Cyclists “old” , not necessarily in reference to their age, perhaps riding a Bianchi or an Olmo or a Dei or Tauruscan, wand brakes (to one of my friend have stolen one under her eyes, what a pity). But it is interesting the other typology, the synchrony. Wand brakes, bike rental of the City (but why waste the light on always, during the day too?), mountains biking for the town, “sport bikes”, the majority from Decathlon – this

non rinuncia all’eleganza correndo qualche pericolo, sandalo da pellegrino, sneaker, scarpetta professionale, scarpa Clark…. E la vecchia introvabile molletta per i pantaloni?

Si rimedia rimboccando ma quando si scende occorre ricordarsi di rimettere a posto la piega sulla gamba destra.

Ciclisti nuovi, mutazione relativamente recente da quando l’automobile è stata sempre più colpevolizzata. Ciclisti “vecchi”, non necessariamente per l’età, magari alla guida di una Bianchi o Olmo o Dei o Tauruscon freni a bacchetta (a una mia amica ne hanno rubata una sotto gli occhi, che dispiacere). Ma è interessante anche l’altra tipologia, la sincronia. Freni a bacchetta, bici a noleggio del Comune (ma perché lo spreco della luce accesa sempre anche di giorno?), mountain cittadine, “sportive”, una grande maggioranza di Decathlon questa tende a diventare una categoria a parte ben distinguibile. E come si riconosce una Tipo-Decathlon? Dal peso (eccessivo) e dalla fantasia nei marchi impressi sul telaio(Weg, B-twin…) . E poi ancora: bici “da corsa” ma con manubrio rivoltato e freni americani (a volte ben condotta da ragazze sportive e veloci in short e coda di cavallo), bici con seggiolino e/o con cestino anteriore ornato da inverosimili fiori di plastica. L’ultima in ordine di apparizione pare essere la Brompton Junction, piccola smontabile e provvista di sella Brooks e cambio – velocissima: mi assicurano che recentemente hanno fatto con queste una scalata al Tonale (o era lo Stelvio?).

La tipologia è incompleta, più interessante sarebbe prove a fare un accostamento tra tipologie di utenti e tipologie di mezzi.

Quel che maggiormente colpisce, in quasi tutti questi casi, è proprio il contrario dell’atmosfera neorealista, in bianco e nero,

tends to become a separate, distinguishable category. And now do you recognize a Decathlon-type? By weight (excessive) and the fancy decals on the frame (WEG, B-Twin…). And then: “racing” bikes but with the handlebars turned up and american brakes (sometimes well ridden by sporty and fast girls in shorts and ponytail), bikes with baby seats and/or with the front basket decorated with improbable plastic flowers.

The last one, in order of appearence seems to be the Brompton Junction, a small bike that can be disassembled and fitted with a saddle Brooks and bicycle gearshift – absolutely fast: I was told that recently they did with one of these a climb to the Tonale (or was it the Stelvio?).

The tipology/type is incomplete, more interesting it would be to try to make a combination of types of users and types of transport. What most strikes me in almost all these cases, it is just the opposite of the neorealist atmosphere in black and white, that I associate to my personal experience of the bike, and in which I am in fact in the good company of the Milanese lady: it is precisely an effect of an excessive “framing”, an exhibitionist posing that seems to characterize many of these users. And that fits well with the flowering of shops that seem more exibition stalls or luxury stores rather than workshops. In one world, the opposite of Drali.

Drali is certainly the most noble, for biographical reasons. I especially go to a small neighborhood store, where the owner shows some cups that won in his youth and then Rossignoli: here people are competent, a bit hasty, inspire some awe: it is better to know well what you are looking for not to be looked at with a haughty air, however there is almost everything you may need; it even

che associo alla mia personale esperienza della bici, e nella quale mi trovo appunto nella buona compagnia della signora milanese: è precisamente un effetto di “inquadratura” eccessiva, una messa –in-posa esibitoria che pare caratterizzare molti di questi utenti.

E che si combina bene con la fioritura di negozi che paiono stand o botteghe di lusso più che laboratori artigiani. Il contrario del Drali, insomma.

Il Drali è certamente il più nobile, anche per motivi biografici. Frequento soprattutto un piccolissimo negozio sotto casa, dove il titolare esibisce qualche coppa vinta in gara in gioventù, e poi Rossignoli: qui le persone sono competenti, un po’ sbrigative, incutono una certa soggezione: è meglio sapere bene quel che si sta cercando per non essere guardati con sufficienza, però c’è quasi tutto ciò di cui si può avere bisogno, mi è capitato addirittura di andarci a comprare una camera d’aria di ricambio per una foratura improvvisa in piazza Cordusio: mi sono fatto prestare i ferretti e l’ho sostituita sul marciapiede lì davanti, seduta stante come si dice. Posso pensare di essermi meritato il loro rispetto Ma appunto, non bisogna ricamarci sopra chissà quale romance, il pericolo della maniera c’è sempre. In una di queste boutique, nel quartiere di Garibaldi-Isola, ho portato qualche tempo fa la Bianchi un po’ malandata, volevo chiedere se era possibile sostituire il deragliatore delle due corone anteriori: mi hanno guardato con indifferenza, “ma non è un alto di gamma…” mi hanno risposto. Che gente!

But in fact, it is not the case to embroider on some kind of novel, there is always the danger of the way. In one of these boutiques, in the neighborhood Garibaldi-Isola, I took some time ago my Bianchi, a bit shabby, I wanted to ask if it was possible to replace the front derailleur of the two crowns: they looked at me with indifference, “but it is not a high-end piece…” they replied. What people!
