o amount of added sugar is OK for a baby’s development. “Avoid foods and beverages with added sugars during the first 2 years of life,” says the USDA Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee after a recent study on the effects of sugars on babies. They went on to say, “Nutritional exposures during the first 1,000 days of life not only contribute to long-term health but also help shape taste preferences and food choices.”

A

s summer marches on in the Boston area, the temperature will be rising. After months of social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, families are increasing their time outdoors. While we welcome the sunshine and hot, humid summer days that Boston provides, families need to familiarize themselves with the signs of heat stroke.

What is heat stroke?

Heatstroke is the most serious heat related illness.

Heatstroke occurs when the body becomes unable to control its temperature.

The body’s temperature rapidly rises, the body’s sweating mechanism fails and the body is not able to cool down. Body temperature may rise to 106° F or higher within 10-15 minutes. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not provided. Those at greatest risk include infants and children up to the age of four. In the very young, the central nervous system is not fully developed.

What are the warning signs of heat stroke?

Signs of heat stroke vary but may include the following: • An extremely high body temperature (above 103° F) • Red, hot, and dry skin (no sweating) • Rapid, strong pulse • Throbbing headache • Dizziness • Nausea • Confusion

What to do if I see someone with any of the warning signs of heat stroke?

If you observe any of the above signs, you may be dealing with a life threatening emergency.

Have someone call 911 while you begin cooling the victim.

Do the following: • Get the victim to a shady area and remove excess clothing.

• Cool the person with whatever means are available — place in a cool tub of water or a cool shower, spray

with a garden hose, sponge with cool water, fan while misting with cool water, or place ice packs or cold, wet towels on the person’s head, neck, armpits and groin. Monitor body temperature and continue cooling efforts until the body temperature drops to 101°-103°F. • Get medical assistance as soon as possible.

Prevention Heatstroke is predictable and preventable. Take these steps to prevent heatstroke during hot weather: • Wear loose fitting, lightweight clothing.

• Protect against sunburn. Protect yourself outdoors with a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

• Drink plenty of fluids.

Staying hydrated will help your body sweat and maintain a normal body temperature.

• Never leave anyone in a parked car. This is a common cause of heat-related deaths in children. When parked in the sun, the temperature in your car can rise 20 degrees F in 10 minutes.

fter the end of the school year excitement fades and the thrill of a trip to the pool wears off, I begin to notice the first signs of summer boredom settling in. The kids start to bicker, they seem to be drawn more to electronics and less to fun outings, and getting them to pitch in around the house is a chore in of itself. After checking the calendar and noting that the first day of school is still weeks away, something has to be done to battle the boredom.

PICK A PROJECT

If your house is anything like mine, there are always unfinished projects to work on. Clean the closets, sort the toys, or work in the yard. Teach your kids how to bake a cake or encourage them to plan a menu and cook dinner. You may need to assist depending on the age of your children. Give them chores they have never tried before so they have the benefit of learning something new and you gain the added bonus of a cleaner house. Change the scenery

When the kids seem antsy and bored, try a change of scenery for a quick mood adjustment. Go for a walk, play in the backyard, hop into the car and do some errands, or even play in an area of the house that you don’t commonly use for play. We all get stir crazy if we stay in the same place too long.

TAKE A DAY TRIP

Speaking of changing the scenery, consider taking a day trip to break up the long summer days. Explore local attractions or travel a few hours to visit a nearby city. A social distance trip to the zoo, beach, museum, or farm can give you and the kids something to look forward to and break up the boredom. If a bigger day trip isn’t in the budget, pack a lunch and spend the day at neighboring town’s park. Google to see what free activities are in your area. There are often seasonal activities that you may not be aware of. In light of Covid-19, please check that events and locations are open and if reservations are required.

It won’t hurt to give in to the desire to play on tablets and watch TV once in awhile. Plan a movie marathon or let the kids have extra screen time to help kill the boredom of the end of summer days. Take an online trip to the library and download some new books and exchange reading minutes for extra screen time. The kids will be happy with their bonus game time and they will sharpen their reading skills before school starts.

HOST A SOCIAL DISTANT PLAYDATE Invite a friend over for backyard playtime. Someone new to play with and talk to can lighten the mood and give siblings a much-needed break from playing (and fighting) with each other. As a stay-at-home mom, I love to invite other moms and their kids over. The moms enjoy adult conversation while kids enjoy play time and everyone is glad for a break from the typical day.

PUT A CRAB IN WATER

An old friend once told me “Put a crab in water.” which is a solution for any age. A bath or shower can lighten anyone’s mood whether you are dealing with a fussy baby or an exhausted mom. Water play can also lighten the mood. Head to the pool, set up the sprinkler in the backyard, fill some water balloons, or visit the beach. A day playing in water can turn your kids from grumpy to happy in no time.

Results that make

a Difference

The end of summer may feel long now but before we know it the kids will be back doing schoolwork in person or online and we will be craving a day off. In the meantime, make the best of the long, lazy days of summer and battle summer boredom one day at a time.

e are all feeling a bit overwhelmed these days as we adjust to the â&#x20AC;&#x153;new normalâ&#x20AC;? created by the COVID-19 crisis. Parents who are working from home while also caring for and helping to educate their children may feel they do not have enough time or patience to successfully manage all of their demanding roles â&#x20AC;&#x201C; especially if the children are misbehaving.

Many parents may have noticed their children acting out more during these long days at home. They may fight with siblings, neglect their studies, and refuse to help around the house.

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or other special needs may engage in more serious aggressive (e.g., hitting, pinching, kicking), disruptive (e.g., throwing things, breaking items), and selfinjurious (e.g., self-biting, head-banging) behaviors.

One reason for an increase in challenging behavior could be that regular routines and schedules have fallen by the wayside. Parents may think that allowing

children to have more free time will help them cope with staying home. However, it is important for kids to keep busy and have a regular daily routine with fixed times for self-care, work, play and exercise, eating, resting, etc.

Another reason children with ASD may engage in more significant challenging behavior could be that they are struggling to communicate and perhaps not getting something they want or need. In many cases, this may be your attention. If you are busy on a work call or helping a sibling, a burst of challenging behavior such as throwing an iPad or a quick pinch can certainly draw focus!

In addition to encouraging communication, I would recommend checking in with your child often, even when she seems engaged. For example, set a timer to go off every two-to-five minutes to remind you to praise her for keeping busy. Being proactive in providing attention can help eliminate her need to act out.
